Beatles
5/5
Because is one of my favorite Beatles songs; the run from golden slumbers to the end is insane, i never realized how much i love golden slumbers and carry that weight; also finding a new appreciation for she’s so heavy
Franz Ferdinand
2/5
I feel like this was a decent listening experience, and objectively I can understand why it’s good, but I just couldn’t connect with it meaningfully. My lower rating doesn’t really reflect a lack of quality I guess?
Amy Winehouse
3/5
I love it because it’s Amy, but it pales in comparison to Back to Black. Not nearly as dynamic. Favorites are in my bed and Amy Amy Amy.
5/5
I loved this way more than I thought. It’s such a brilliant and cohesive album. It’s not really something I would normally be interested in sound-wise, but really made an impact. Faves: five years, starman, it ain’t easy, lady stardust, rock n roll suicide.
Yes
2/5
A rough listen for me, and a good example of how I’m sure there will be many albums on this list that are “technically good” but really don’t resonate with me. I was just bored, to be honest. Tough sell when every song on the album is either thirty seconds or ten minutes long. Some nice guitar tho, I enjoyed Mood for a Day the most out of any other song on the album.
The Strokes
2/5
I admittedly didn’t give this a very close listen, because I just listened to it a couple of months ago for the first time and didn’t like it, and I liked it even less this time. Way too same same for me. Doesn’t go anywhere as my dad says.
T. Rex
4/5
Enjoyed this more than I thought, would listen again. Bang a Gong is a classic, but I also really liked Mambo Sun and Cosmic Dancer and a few other cuts. A solid one!
Talking Heads
3/5
Probably would not listen again, but I am always charmed by David byrne’s weirdness. Love psycho killer, and I was grooving with the first three songs. Talking heads, i can never hate you - rounding up to a three
George Harrison
3/5
Probably wouldn’t listen again - it’s just sooo long. There are a good number of gems here, but it’s a lot? Favorites: what is life, all things must pass, LOVE the art of dying. Eh. I don’t know George!
Paul Simon
3/5
Understandably controversial and unfortunately really nostalgic for me (summer 05 baby!). Musically, I find it pleasing, but not overly so. Favorite songs: Boy in the Bubble, Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes; you can call me Al.
Hole
2/5
Not sure I would listen again - I enjoyed this less than I thought I would - I really wish we could give half star reviews. Still love it for mailbu tho. Other faves: the title track (of course)northern star, and boys on the radio.
Deep Purple
4/5
Wouldn’t listen again necessarily but i enjoyed this way more than i thought! It really rocked! Favorites were speed king and flight of the rat. Not my style but for what it is, it rules.
The xx
4/5
Would definitely turn on during work again; very nostalgic and ambient for me; Intro alone could take this all the way home, but I also like most of the other tracks just fine.
Billy Bragg
2/5
Would not listen again, kind of a tough one; California stars is nice?
The Clash
5/5
Already a favorite; this album rules; favorites: train in vain, lost in the supermarket, guns of Brixton, clampdown.
Erykah Badu
2/5
Probably wouldn’t listen again; not too bad to have on in the background at work, but not really my style, i think my favorite songs were the first and last
Green Day
4/5
Would listen again; have always loved Green Day’s sound and this album came out right as i started college so the nostalgia is high; plus i just like it anyway! Favorites: Holiday, boulevard of broken dreams, st. Jimmy, American idiot.
Nirvana
4/5
Would definitely listen again; took me a long time to come around to Nirvana, but now I think I’ve achieved the requisite suffering to appreciate it and these guys really rock; favorites: in bloom, come as you are, something in the way. Oh Kurt, what could have been!
The Youngbloods
4/5
Would listen again; an incredibly pleasant surprise; just real nice tunes; favorites: darkness darkness, smug, sham.
Mariah Carey
3/5
Wouldn’t listen to again all the way through, but would always listen to the bangers; nostalgic but not Mariah’s best; favorites: honey, butterfly, breakdown might be my favorite Mariah song of all time
Screaming Trees
1/5
I did not like this at all thanks
Cream
3/5
Would probably listen again; too bad Eric Clapton is a weird, because this does rock pretty hard, though not a no-skip for me; favorite songs: sunshine of your love, strange brew; tales of brave Ulysses
Miles Davis
4/5
Would listen again - a truly most pleasant surprise. Maybe in my old age, I’m becoming comfortable with the idea of treating jazz as a journey and not a destination. Favorites: Moon Dreams, Venus de Milo, Israel.
The Only Ones
2/5
Didn’t really care for this and would not listen again - city of fun was kind of ok? Rounding up from a 1.5 here.
MGMT
4/5
A favorite and would always listen to again…loved this album so much in law school. Was so excited to get it and it delivered. First half of the album is my favorite, and electric feel is a forever banger. Really a 4.5 for me.
DJ Shadow
3/5
Would listen again as ambient music; an interesting experience; tough to pick favorites but i liked floating along with this in general
Queen
4/5
Would listen again; even a mediocre Queen album gets high marks from me - i could listen to Freddie sing about anything anywhere. Favorites: bohemian rhapsody, death on two legs; you’re my best friend
Earth, Wind & Fire
4/5
Would listen again; damn this was fun; a well deserved round up from 3.5; favorites: shining star, africano
Black Flag
3/5
Would listen again - took me back to being a teenager!
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Would listen again, definition of cool, get up and dance! Favorites: Freddie’s dead, superfly, Pusherman
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
Would not listen again, but rounding up to three; objectively I’m interested, subjectively I don’t like it; his voice doesn’t always work for me again. Favorites: straight to you, brother my cup is empty, when i first came to town.
Songhoy Blues
4/5
So far outside of my comfort zone but I really had a good time with this while I was shoveling snow. Favorites: soubour, irganda, jolie
The Isley Brothers
4/5
Would listen again; extremely good vibes, really more like 4.5; favorites: that lady, summer breeze, but every song really kind of slaps!
Belle & Sebastian
5/5
I considered giving this a four, but listen - these are the sounds of my adolescence, and this is a no-skip album for me. “Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying” is one of the finest songs ever written. I understand why other people don’t vibe with this, but I love love love it.
LCD Soundsystem
2/5
Wouldn’t listen again - I don’t think I get LCD Soundsystem like other people do. My favorite song was when this album
looped into dance yrself clean 😂
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
3/5
Maybe would listen again. I dig this, but I don't LOVE it. The Message is of course a classic, and the rest is pretty good. Some of hip hop culture REALLY has not aged well, though. And by that I mean the rampant homophobia.
Blur
2/5
Wouldn't listen again. Turns out I don't really like this album. Song 2 is fantastic, and I liked a couple of others, but overall kind of a dud for me. A couple of songs sounded like the Smiths, and not in a good way?
The Doors
3/5
Probably would not listen again but I recognize this is objectively pretty good ; favorite song is probably been down so long; maybe i just don’t like the doors? Low 3
Madonna
2/5
Would not listen again; I was genuinely excited for this but it underwhelmed me. The Y2K of it all has aged poorly. What it feels like for a girl is still an excellent song. This is a straight up two.
The Jam
4/5
Would listen again; just a simple, fun and good album that I would have loved when I was heavy into the clash, the specials, etc. in my teenage years. A high three that I’m rounding up to a four. Faves: English rose, all mod cons into to be someone
Meat Loaf
4/5
Would always listen again; is it objectively a four? Maybe not, but for me it is; love the loaf’s voice and these instrumentals are crazy; faves: paradise by the dashboard light, two out of three ain’t bad, bat out of hell
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Would listen again; Stevie is making music on a plane that the rest of us simply cannot understand; this isn't his best album, but it is quite good and thoughtful. Low 4. Faves: Smile Please, Creepin, They Won't Go When I Go
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Surprised that l liked this and would listen again, apparently i love weird melancholy. Low 4. Faves: the stranger song, sisters of mercy, one of us cannot be wrong.
Elastica
3/5
Probably wouldn’t listen again but still a low 3; a nice little pop punk Brit album where songs are under 2 minutes and very 90s nostalgia. Faves: connection, car song, stutter, see that animal
Slayer
3/5
Gonna be honest - I did not hate listening to this. Dare I say I had fun? SLAYER!!!!! Raining blood is an awesome song. I’m giving it a solid three and I’m not ashamed.
Wild Beasts
2/5
Probably wouldn’t listen again, but not BAD; it was great for zoning out in the car for a while; a solid 2.5 i think? Faves: hooting and howling, we’ve still got the taste…
Elton John
2/5
Would not listen again but man Elton can belt; tiny dancer!; rest was kind of blah. A high two?
Eminem
3/5
Might listen again, but not my favorite from Eminem; heavy on the nostalgia, even now I find the lyrics to some of these songs kind tough to swallow, but his flow is undeniable. A pretty solid three. Faves: My Name Is, If I Had, I'm Shady, Just Don't Give a Fuck, Bad Meets Evil, Still Don't Give a Fuck.
Pentangle
2/5
Not really my thing. Reminds me of medieval woods. Low two, but I’m sure they are all wonderfully talented musicians, so sorry it’s not my bag, guys; faves: cold mountain (which I’m not even sure was on the original release?)
The Cramps
3/5
The Foundation for the music I loved as a teenager and so I have to give it a three. Fun, chaotic, goofy. Faves: i really like the first two-three song run
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
Sorry Bruce, not your finest.
ZZ Top
3/5
Surprisingly would listen again, this is a really fun guitar album. Solid to high three. Faves: waitin for the bus, Jesus just left Chicago, La grange
Queen
3/5
Probably would not listen again, but it is Queen, so still a good rock album. Low three. Faves: white queen
The Prodigy
3/5
I need to give this another listen, but this is the kind of music that I love listening to during work. A low three for now!
Kings of Leon
3/5
I was underwhelmed at first, but the back half of this album really picked up. Love the album cover and this has always been one of my favorite album names. A surprise three. Faves: Pistol of Fire, Milk, The Bucket, Four Kicks.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
I find Elvis costello’s music pleasant if not always groundbreaking. I liked this, didn’t love it. First couple of songs are my faves!
Sam Cooke
5/5
No notes.
Led Zeppelin
3/5
I am a Led Zeppelin fan - this, however, if not my favorite Led Zeppelin album. Kashmir rules! I give this a three. Also love In My Time of Dying and Houses of the Holy. You don't have to make every song ten minutes you guys! It's ok!
Drive Like Jehu
2/5
I did not care for this. Was much more interested in the instrumentals then the music. A low two. Bullet train to Vegas was kinda fun?
Robert Wyatt
2/5
Brian Eno
2/5
Kinda like being in a sound bath.
Johnny Cash
5/5
So emotionally overwhelming in the best way possible. It’s not perfect, but I don’t care. Faves: the man comes around, hurt, in my life, I’m so lonesome i could cry
Nick Drake
3/5
I wasn’t sure about this, but there is something keeping me at a low three.
The Notorious B.I.G.
4/5
Would absolutely listen again, but minus one for skits and slurs. And diddy. I’m always struck by how dark
Biggie’s music is - he really was such a good storyteller
John Martyn
3/5
Might not listen again, but i liked it more than i thought I would. I’d give this a low three - not sure what my favorites were, it all kind of blended together, but i found many more pleasant moments than unpleasant
Public Enemy
3/5
Still startlingly relevant. Faves: A letter to the New York post; bring tha noize.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Would listen again - not a no skip album for me, but just soooo damn good. A very high four. Faves: purple haze, manic depression, foxey lady, highway chile, red house.
Jurassic 5
3/5
Gorillaz
3/5
Would listen to some of it again - this is an interesting experiment, sometimes misses the mark, sometimes really really hits - Clint eastwood, 19-2000. Low three?
Blue Cheer
2/5
Would not listen again; first couple of songs were ok but the rest not my thing; high two?
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
A low three high two that I’ll round up. Not my cup of tea, but i can appreciate some of it. Faves: yes, pcp.
Black Sabbath
4/5
A rip roaring good time indeed. Imagine this being your debut album? Cheeeezzzz. Faves: Black Sabbath, A bit of finger…
King Crimson
4/5
Meandering, but would listen again. I get why this so such a big deal. It gets a high four from me. Faves: 21st century schizoid man, the court of the crimson king.
Culture Club
3/5
A fun romp, not their best, but I still had a good time. Maybe would listen again? Not sure. Faves - the classic karma chameleon of course, church of the poison mind, miss me blind. Solid three.
The Fall
2/5
Yeah. No?
Van Morrison
2/5
Today I learned that I can’t tolerate Van Morrison’s voice for more than two songs in a row? I expected to love this, and did not.

4/5
Would listen again - was strangely charmed by thus! Faves: perfect day, walk on the wild side
Count Basie & His Orchestra
4/5
Listened to this a bunch at work, would listen again, very boppy and got me in the mood to work!
Cee Lo Green
3/5
Good not great. Love I’ll be around and the one. Low 3
Run-D.M.C.
4/5
Would listen again. It may be a little same same, but the electricity is undeniable. Low four. Faves: hard times, rock box
U2
2/5
Not a u2 fan, best songs are the singles. Would nott listen again!
Eminem
4/5
Oof. Violently homophobic and sexist, but unfortunately kind of rules. Drug Ballad is a forever jam for me. and Bitch Please II. It's a four.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
A classic - What's going on, mercy mercy me, and inner city blues are the best. I really like it, would listen again, but it's not a true five for me. Just a little too...something.
Ananda Shankar
2/5
A two ish? I wouldn't listen again. It wasn't as out-there as I expected. Jumpin Jack Flash isn't too bad on the sitar!
Led Zeppelin
3/5
A good one, but not a great one. Medium three. Faves: immigrant song, and i have always loved tangerine for some reason.
Marilyn Manson
2/5
I’m being generous. This album sounds exactly like what it is, which is a bunch of aholes taking a ton of weird drugs and trying to record an album. Even the beautiful people didn’t hit as hard as i remember! Alas and alack.
The Cars
5/5
Fiona Apple
4/5
Would listen again. I loved some of these songs so much - sleep to Dream is just one of the best, and criminal and shadowboxer are great too. Overall, there are some parts that drag for me, but Fiona has such a cool voice. I give it a strong 4. Fave songs are the singles and carrion.
