Peter Gabriel
2/5
here’s a hot take: just bc an album is from the 80s and has one (1) song on it that’s vaguely recognizable bc it gets intermittent radio play on throwback stations does NOT make said album a must listen. now that being said, if i were training an ai model to generate an 80s album, this one WOULD be a must listen

Miles Davis
3/5
this was fun but got lowkey repetitive towards the end and im not a big trumpet guy myself but i can see why mr. davis is a big deal
Paul Simon
4/5
enjoyable 👍
Sheryl Crow
2/5
i’m sorry sheryl.. it’s like the chicks but boneless, like shania but without the blind support on a national basis, like nickelback if chad kroger was a female country musician
it’s cool i guess
Paul Simon
3/5
pretty but not mr simon’s finest work imo
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
call me corny but i <3 bruce springsteen he simply never misses
My Bloody Valentine
4/5
i like 👍
George Michael
4/5
after looking into it i realized that george michael only came out nearly a DECADE after this album, which is surprising to me because in retrospect this whole album, the yearning, the themes of freedom and feeling empty inside/insecure, it was all over the place. anyways i miss you george michael you were a legend gone too soon MUAH
3/5
chill album with some bangers on there but i am legally not allowed to give this above a 3 because my dad has secret one-sided beef with bono
Lorde
5/5
this album feels like being 17 and insane again, absolute bangers, absolutely cathartic, absolutely narrates every teenage girl’s journey through heartache, uncomfortable growth, and acceptance of self. love u lorde muah.
p.s. the album backstory here is hella messy and everyone should see the iconic powerpoint (linked here for your convenience: https://dfta.show/files/Lorde%20and%20Jack%20Antonoff%20-.pptx%20(2).pdf)
The Coral
2/5
is it a hot take if i say it’s a cheap knockoff of 70s rock? ffs this is a 2002 album not 1971
The Police
4/5
i liked it 👍
Joy Division
5/5
shadowplay live was easily one of the most iconic things i’ve witnessed irl
Iggy Pop
2/5
normally i like weird proto-indie music but iggy specifically gives me the heebie jeebies
Adele
3/5
who remembers when all new iphones came with this album preinstalled (🙋🏻♀️) no it’s not her finest work but i’m a sucker for drama and this album got me thru the immeasurable tragedy that was my elementary school crush going to a different high school (lol)
The Doors
3/5
hmmm so many thoughts about this one.. i understand that the doors r a classic and influential band but this is the thrid(?) doors album out of <200 songs total? must we listen to every single doors album? but then again every single doors album is still preferable to some of this other stuff so i really can’t complain too much. ending the album with a 12-minute song called the end was funny but 12 minutes long smh.
“kam on beybi layt may fayur” -my dad
Fela Kuti
2/5
what i’ve learned from this process so far is that songs from the pre-streaming era are all either 90 seconds long, or 23 minutes, with absolutely no other options in between.
although i do enjoy the change of pace with this one, i do feel like this would be more enjoyable to listen to live, in a musty dancefloor somewhere and probably under the influence.
sitting in the concrete prison listening to afrobeats makes me more depressed than i was initially, as it reminds me of how i could be spending my young fun years out somewhere warm, instead of on burnaby mountain where it is currently 9 degrees and raining, and there is homework to be done.
every tippy tap of the drum solo was tippy tapping directly onto my sad tired skull.
Minutemen
3/5
much love & respect to 80s punk but somehow this was boring. not bad, just something my highschool chemistry teacher would listen to.
Ramones
4/5
blitzkrieg ᵖᵒᵖ! some old guy would fight me for even thinking this but the ramones were and still are undeniably brat like wdym “i wanna beeee your bOyFriEnD” while wearing a whole crop top on the cover photo. i love the 70s. i love leather jackets and shitty haircuts. live laugh love ramones.
The Allman Brothers Band
2/5
i’m quaking in my boots because why does 7 songs last ONE HOUR AND EIGHTEEN MINUTES - my goldfish attention span simply cannot handle this insanity.
right off the bat the guitar intro is really great and i love a boop doop bassline always. very bluesy. i forgot i was listening to it and snapped into an alternate cowboy timeline when i finally came back into consciousness. technically good but i am too sleepy to appreciate this.
Mj Cole
3/5
coworker music lol
The Thrills
4/5
good album for a sunny day, but i’m always a sucker for this kind of vibe. as a side note, it’s hard to believe it came out in 2003 AND that they’re irish, i would have genuinely thought it was from a 70s/80s west coast band (think phish & that whole scene). i had to go back and check it wasn’t like a rerelease or remaster or something because they have that vibe down so convincingly.
David Holmes
3/5
kinda good background music, gave me enough motivation to pack for my trip but prob wouldn’t listen to it on the daily
Blondie
5/5
i <3 u blondie
The Doors
3/5
it was chill
Talking Heads
3/5
love the talking heads in general but this isn’t my favourite album of theirs so meh
The Cars
4/5
so many lowk nostalgic songs i didn’t even know was them
Bob Dylan
4/5
here’s an opinion entirely unrelated to the album itself: can hollywood PLEASE STOP with the biopics of singers/bands who are still alive oh my god. first it was elton john, then queen (rip freddie mercury but queen is still out and about performing with adam lambert last i checked) then it was bob dylan and now it’s the mf beatles???? with barry keoghan as ringo starr???????? stop the madness i can’t take this anymore bob dylan is alive and well nobody needed timothee chalamet crooning for a whole movie and i stand by this opinion so come at me
The Streets
3/5
at first i was going to give it a 2 because it was a tough listen at times BUT on second thought the storyline was interesting and it was original. however i do think we can blame this guy for the birth of hobo johnson
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
1/5
i found this whole thing pretty irritating tbh and i’m glad i don’t have to listen to it again
MGMT
4/5
i wish i was a millennial (ew) just so i could experience being in uni 2007-2012
David Crosby
2/5
cowboy done boring and corny
Willie Nelson
5/5
cowboy done right
David Bowie
3/5
i feel like at the time it would have been shocking but now so many years later it comes off as unnecessarily horny and edgy but it’s not really cool or aspirational in any way today. i don’t regret listening to it though
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
i see a bad moooon rising
Public Image Ltd.
2/5
i want to like it but i really just don’t
Baaba Maal
4/5
this was a vibe
5/5
12 yr old me thought that this is what cool ppl listen to, and she may have been right
Hot Chip
3/5
my chips r hot
Culture Club
3/5
corny, annoying, terrible ad libs, random instrumental outro track, and yet i lowkey like it
The Byrds
3/5
country music starter pack: jesus, alcoholism, and killing your wife
Primal Scream
2/5
wtf they lied to me not a single scream was scrumpt. ragequitting this album rn
Elis Regina
4/5
very fun and funky,, i like it. reminds me of the old music my parents play when they get nostalgic except if we were from brazil and not bosnia. however it reminds me of this dude I used to go out with way back in first year, which was an overall strange time in my life so -1 point.
Kanye West
2/5
i’m so cheesed that kanye crashed out bc this album has some bangers and i do see his overarching theme here, BUT minus stars for being a raging nazi and minus stars for being terrible towards women, though i do have to give him 1 extra star because of the aforementioned bangers and the fact that this album went triple platinum in my car when i first got my license, sorry :/
PJ Harvey
4/5
at first i really thought i wasn’t going to like this one, just based on the first two tracks, but after that it kinda grew on me. 3.5 stars bc i like it but not lovee it
Television
3/5
at first glance, it sounds like what would happen if the beatles tried to go punk.
i’m not complaining or anything but it’s weird to me the juxtaposition of the relatively low-quality production and vocals and then all of a sudden they hit the cleanest little classic rock guitar solo like what is going on here
Van Halen
4/5
i like van halen yay this is top tier dad music
Violent Femmes
5/5
i literally love this album but what else is new. violence? check. femmes? check. a whiny man singing? chchcheck
James Brown
3/5
credit where credit is due, the man can work a crowd
Leonard Cohen
3/5
dramatic much? not sure what to make of the non-singing singing, but this reminds me of like chess the musical or something
Nick Drake
2/5
wasn’t bad but not really my vibe and too sleepy for this tuesday afternoon
Gene Clark
3/5
i’m not complaining it was nice
The Psychedelic Furs
3/5
generic but not bad
The Clash
4/5
i don’t think i can overstate how much i love the aggressively london accent - genuinely sounds like if oliver! was set to punk instead of whatever the showtunes genre is called. good stuff though i like it
Cypress Hill
3/5
I didn’t know what this was going to be before i started listening, and i honestly can’t say i was disappointed. not my usual jam but a cool change of pace
Happy Mondays
2/5
interesting background noise at times but maybe too generic/nothing stood out to me
Deep Purple
4/5
good stuff, deep purple was on the same compilation cd re: physical graffiti so also familiar
Led Zeppelin
3/5
my dad used to have kashmir burned onto a classic rock compilation cd in the car, so it is nostalgic, but, as always my complaint is that it’s sooooo long
The Police
4/5
music for aspiring private investigators
Mike Oldfield
3/5
i audibly laughed at “~glockenspiel~ *ding ding ding*” because it caught me so off guard, and then the goblin soundtrack reallllly threw me off but i’m not mad at it. not my usual jam but i actually found it moderately enjoyable as background music while pretending to be a pro hacker at work
Paul Simon
4/5
mr simon ily
Hüsker Dü
3/5
at first i was like hü the heck are these guys? i like em tho it was 1 hour and 9 minutes of solid background music but perhaps nothing more than that
4/5
unfortunately i really enjoy music made by men with shitty haircuts. in the gallagher brothers' defense, its not their fault every guitar-playing male manipulator decided to learn wonderwall on acoustic guitar for the sole purpose of terrorizing a captive audience of their potential love interests and unwitting house party guests, so although it isssss overplayed asf and deeply annoying, they could not possibly have foreseen this outcome in 1995 (did i physically recoil when the song came on? of course i did!). some moderate bangers on this one, bonus points for a manchester accent of course because i miss being out there soooooo bad. someday you fiiiiind me caught beneath the landsliiiiiiiiide in a champagne supernova in the skyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Kanye West
1/5
100 years from now, historians will ask themselves when kanye started losing his mind - and i will rise from the grave holding a copy of this album. yeezus is undeniably where it all started going downhill.
1 star and unlike college dropout, i don't even feel bad about it either.
The White Stripes
2/5
ykw i didn't like this as much as I should, just based on whatever else I listen to. I didn't hate it per se but I don't think I'll be coming back to this one. dare I say it was a touch gimmicky? outrageous I know coming from ME but maybe if I discovered this 10 years ago and formed an emotional attachment to it then, this would be a very different review but alas here we are.
Neil Young
3/5
relaxing i like it
Tracy Chapman
5/5
i want to hurt the op of the "secretary rock" rating. it's a modern revival of the folksy political commentary of the anti-vietnam war era. let the woman be softspoken in expressing her discontent goddamn it. behind the wall hits like a ton of bricks with just the vocals and no instrumental. i think if i had a million dollars by the barenaked ladies is a cheapo rip off of mountains o things lol. she was a college student dreaming of social and political change with a guitar and a dream, and i love her for it.
George Harrison
3/5
decently vibey but had me googling “did george harrison convert to hinduism”
Big Star
4/5
pretty good
Grant Lee Buffalo
2/5
i think this is an attempt at y’allternative but it really just wasn’t hitting today tbh
George Jones
3/5
*sad cowboy emoji*
The War On Drugs
3/5
it’s like if role model and timothee chalamet as bob dylan had a baby and that baby was a sad millennial. that said, it was chill but entirely forgettable
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
i’ve never really listened to bob marley before this but i like it 😎
Randy Newman
1/5
ok like i GET that it’s a social commentary blah blah concept album blah blah american south and whatever but my god i did not need to hear a white dude say the n word 46 times within the first three minutes of this album. the whole thing just sounded like other songs but with as many slurs/insults crammed in as humanly possible.
pack it up, randy
Oasis
4/5
yup
Stephen Stills
2/5
i like the funky little giraffe on the album cover but the music was mildly boring
Joni Mitchell
4/5
yay joni
Prefab Sprout
3/5
not bad, just a little too sleepy for my taste but my dad probably would have liked this if he spoke english in 1985
The Smiths
4/5
oh morrissey the old complainer that you are
Bonnie Raitt
3/5
i love her giant poofy hair! this the type of music that makes me wish i was sitting on the couch in a bathrobe with the windows wide open and a glass of wine
Franz Ferdinand
2/5
as the very wise dude from wallows/13 reasons why once said: “she was only 17.. why are girls in songs always 17?”
i didn’t know these guys r scottish from the like 2 songs of theirs that get radio play!
now aside from the fun accents and cliche opening lines etc, i do suppose they have some pretty catchy bass lines and fun guitar riffs, but overall i don’t think i actually enjoyed this very much or at all tbh. it’s like a cross between early arctic monkeys and the strokes, and idk if it’s just because i’m in a bad mood because there’s no ac in the office or because i’m already overly emotionally attached to the aforementioned bands or what. perhaps i revisit this one again when i’m not being boiled alive, but it’s a no from me today dawg.
p.s. the og franz ferdinand was assassinated in my city so it’s only fitting that i assassinate them in my 1001 albums ratings
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
3/5
it’s cool and all but for the record this made me zone out and stare at a tree out the window for 20 mins, or maybe it was the fact that i had a huge lunch idk
Joni Mitchell
3/5
idk if this is a hot take but it was just a tiiinnnyyy bit sappy for me
Simply Red
1/5
couldn’t get thru it i’m sorry
The Beach Boys
4/5
gotta love the beach boys
The Rolling Stones
4/5
bangers
Gil Scott-Heron
2/5
probably bc i just listened to bb king immediately followed by miles davis but i’m respectfully bored i need a complete vibe change
Daft Punk
2/5
started off fun but then the novelty wore off
Queen
4/5
i, too, am in love with my car
Siouxsie And The Banshees
4/5
oh siouxsie you really are the blueprint
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
i’ve been in love with this album since i was like 13
Suede
2/5
i didn’t hate it but i didn’t love it either, minus 1 point for sounding like an amalgamation of a million things that already exist, plus incestuous undertones on the drowners
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
anthony kiedis is altogether too out of pocket but there r some bangers on this album for sure
Talking Heads
4/5
i’ve been on a bit of an 80’s vibe these days soooo i was happy to see this on here, since i’ve never actually listened to this album start to finish. they’re undeniably weird as hell and i like it.
p.s. 40 mins is scientifically the best album length and you can’t change my mind. it’s long enough to set a vibe, but short enough to hold your (my) attention. i actually hate it when the album is so long that by the time it ends i forget what happened at the beginning
p.p.s. i <3 cowbell
B.B. King
3/5
rare good live album
Miles Davis
3/5
respectfully,,,, 2 songs 38 mins is crazy work. otherwise it was chill
Everything But The Girl
1/5
jesus if i wanted to listen to ballads with a biiiig side of melancholia i would have just put on whitney houston immediately followed by the smiths but this was not it
Dexys Midnight Runners
2/5
hooting and hollering or yapping over sweet home alabama. there’s no in between and both suck. even eileen can’t save them from this hot mess.
The Cardigans
1/5
idc how viral that one song is, the whole album is literally unbearable to me im sorry
Jimi Hendrix
3/5
it’s pretty good but prob not going to become my new go-to and that’s okay
Dead Kennedys
5/5
god bless punk
Throbbing Gristle
4/5
oops i like this
Peter Gabriel
2/5
here’s a hot take: just bc an album is from the 80s and has one (1) song on it that’s vaguely recognizable bc it gets intermittent radio play on throwback stations does NOT make said album a must listen. now that being said, if i were training an ai model to generate an 80s album, this one WOULD be a must listen
PJ Harvey
4/5
the last living rose melody reminds me a lot of that one song that’s viral these days, could not tell you the name of it for the life of me.
anyways looking at the overall review lots of ppl seem to have an issue with this being a woman making pretentious music but i think women should be MORE pretentious if anything. pj is cool has always been cool and will always be cool thanks you and good night
Billy Joel
4/5
strooooong 4 but im not in a 5 mood today, absolutely emotionally attached to this album though i cannot lie
3/5
i like bob dylan but i don’t like live albums in general unfortunately
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
what an odd album. individual songs were nice and I wonder why they didn’t get more long-term commercial popularity (possibly overshadowed by rumours which came out right before this album?), but the album as a whole was very disjoint, with everyone seemingly on a totally different wavelength. if this were another band i’d probably be harsher on them, but this is an album I can see myself listening to more in the future
G. Love & Special Sauce
2/5
very bizarre both lyrically and stylistically but quickly gets boring because all 53 minutes of it sound exactly the same to me. the sauce was not that special i can’t lie
Don McLean
4/5
mfw i drove my chevy to the levee but the levee was actually full of anti-war sentiment
Jack White
3/5
pretty good, but first half of the album was better imo
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
i love it when they alternate words between the two of them it’s so much fun
Fleet Foxes
4/5
i love this album so much it makes me feel like i’m flying
The Velvet Underground
4/5
considering the fact that this came out in 1968 i would say they were ahead of the curve in terms of weird noise music. didn’t know what to expect really going into this but i wasn’t disappointed tbh. maybe a hot take but i actually liked this, not exactly the type of music you’d put on for a chill vibe while studying but i take loud and weird over boring and forgettable any day
Metallica
5/5
fuckin majestic
Burning Spear
4/5
will this convince me to start listening to reggae on the regular? probably not BUT i did enjoy this thoroughly
Led Zeppelin
4/5
bangers
The Cult
4/5
man i love the 80s
Van Morrison
3/5
not really my jam tbh and it felt a little long but it was cool at times
Aretha Franklin
3/5
it’s not really my jam normally but i liked it
Orbital
3/5
beep boop i am a robot
p.s. quality seconds is a banger i can’t even lie
Gillian Welch
2/5
i really wish i liked this more but its so dull imo it’s putting me to sleep and not in a good way
The Doors
3/5
riders on the storm reminds me of being a kid listening to the car radio with my dad but otherwise the rest of the album wasn’t so much my jam
Black Sabbath
4/5
rest in peace ozzy :(
Steely Dan
4/5
can’t believe this is how i find out that steely dan is actually two dudes and neither of them is even called dan. i feel betrayed.
Prince
3/5
this would have been higher bc there are some certified bops on here BUTTTT the middle part of lady cab driver was a tough listen on this monday morning and made me cringe (although the guitar solo that immediately followed was v cool)
The Beta Band
2/5
ok but kinda forgettable imo
Leonard Cohen
2/5
i think on second thought i don’t actually like leonard cohen
The Killers
5/5
this albummm this album is so nostalgic to me. not only are the vibes creepy dancy and otherwise immaculate but somebody told me reminds me of playing badminton in gym class when it would always come on the radio, all these things that i’ve done reminds me of the time i was at a house party back in the day and the guy i was madly in love with (older, drove a mustang, extremely cool) asked “hey do you like the killers” and put it on (i swooned), and mr brightside has been and always will be an absolute white girl anthem, and of course i can’t forget about the fact that they sparked my decade long obsession with mormonism and other nice religious groups (idk either bruh) i love u brandon flowers i love the killers yes.
however this is actually not my favourite album of theirs (gasp) so it’s a 4.5 but ill round up because why not
Pretenders
4/5
v interesting
3/5
i really really liked the mess we’re in, but as a whole the album didn’t really stand out to me too much, and (i may be wrong but) the social commentary aspects felt more like an item checked off a to-do list rather than genuine observations. i liked both of her other albums on this list better than this one, but credit where credit is due the cover photo eats
George Michael
2/5
i swear i’m not a prude but i just can’t listen to this D1 freakery on a tuesday morning, there r some bangers on here but 7 mins of begging someone to bang u is just not my jam sorry mr. michael
The Temptations
3/5
pretty chill
Depeche Mode
5/5
very awesome
Khaled
3/5
moderately enjoyable 👍 prob won’t become a khaled stan or anything but it was a fun listen
Beach House
3/5
not the biggest fan of like ambient or dream pop but it’s cool
Public Enemy
3/5
i liked it, not something i would normally listen to on my own time but i guess that’s kinda the whole point
Gary Numan
4/5
vibey
Randy Newman
1/5
absolutely grated on my nerves i can’t even
The Avalanches
3/5
weird but good
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
2/5
i’m not the biggest blues fan tbh, not my favourite neil young album
Jeru The Damaja
3/5
ykw i’ll give him the credit for being creative with it
R.E.M.
3/5
the unfortunate thing is that we had a better r.e.m. album earlier and now this sounds mid by comparison
Doves
2/5
ok the reallllly unfortunate thing is the fact that this came after rem and like even the mid rem album we just had made this seem extra mid sorry this couldn’t be an objective evaluation but it’s no contest
Frank Sinatra
3/5
til: a new ancient euphemism for boinking
sorry sinatra i’m glad i listened to this and you sing nicely but i would literally never listen to this album for fun
Radiohead
4/5
call me a male manipulator but i love radiohead
Michael Jackson
4/5
my elementary school bully was a full-blown michael jackson stan in like grade 2, she used to put her initials + mj in hearts on all of her stuff, and listening to this album unearthed that very random memory. regardless of this, there r some bangers on here 👍
Marvin Gaye
4/5
i like 👍
Santana
2/5
music with not a lot of lyrics makes me feel like the subject of a nature documentary ngl
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
neil young is pretty good
Joe Ely
3/5
ykw i think there actually is a time and a place for honky took (just maybe not a tuesday morning)
Rush
