Day 1 of listening to different albums from this website and today was Earth, Wind and Fire. I am familiar with a lot of their music but only know a couple of the tracks on this album, which turned out to be the singles they released from the album. This was their 6th studio album. I loved the richness of all the instruments. I did feel like some of the later tracks were just the band jamming and having fun together and weren't as exciting as the singles on the album. 3/5
OMG this was my favorite album when I was a freshman in high school. I think I got the cassette for my 15th birthday back in 1993. Let's see how it holds up...
I think so far it's nostalgic but my taste in music has definitely changed since then. A lot of the music sounds like sweaty people in a basement somehow. But I guess that's what grunge IS. Writing music in the dead of winter on a rainy Seattle day will result in music that is dark and gray the way Alice In Chains' music sounds. This album features some great guitar riffs, harmonies, and tricky time signatures which I had forgotten about when I listened to this cassette on repeat in 1993.
I guess in the depressing state of winter of 2026, maybe depressing, gritty music isn't what I need right now, but I DO love the nostalgia of listening to this album more than 30 years later.
Even though it's not what I would select to play in the car anymore, the music still holds up, especially the singles from this album, and the vocals are really great. Rooster is a standout on the album. The best overall song in my opinion is Would?, the final track of the album. It was also on the Singles soundtrack, which was my favorite film when it came out. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to see what early 90s Seattle was like
I still love the album and it has a lot of nostalgia for me, but not every track is a banger, maybe like half of them? 4/5 stars.
I've heard all the Go-Go's biggest hits, but I can't say that I've ever listened to a full album, or any of their lesser-known tracks. This album is so fun and I had a great time listening! I love listening to women's music, and the Go-Go's were pioneers. Men dominate the rock scene, and an all-women rock band was rare, especially in the 70s when they were founded. Overall, I had a great time listening to their music. It was a lot of fun, and I appreciate the strides made in advancing women in the arts. 4/5 stars.
Wow Amy Winehouse was one of the best vocalists of her time. I love her music style. I watched her downfall from the tabloids in 2010/2011, and it was so sad to see. I wish she had been able to overcome her demons.
Unfortunately this album is just not doing it for me. There were a few tracks that I went back and listened to again, and it had a rich, full sound that I was wanting from her soulful voice. About half of the tracks are just okay, or are ones that I wanted to skip over. I've never been one to pay too much mind to lyrics and have had trouble deciphering them in music, but even I couldn't miss some of the jarring lyrics in some of her songs. I'm no prude, but I draw a line at things like homophobia, and the first track had some pretty questionable lyrics.
Overall, I had fun with a lot of this music, but I'm hoping when her next album comes up, it'll give me the sound that want. 3/5
First album that I am not familiar with the artist at all! Maybe I'll know some of the songs. I decided to look at the Wikipedia article about the group before I begin listening, and I found out that this is their debut album, and the name of the album is actually cockney slang, which has always been a weird niche topic I've been interested in. Looks like this album never gained traction in the US, so it's possible I have not heard any of their music until now. Looks like they may have broken into US markets a little bit around 2000 based on their awards, so maybe I've heard their later albums.
OK, listening has commenced. And I do know their music! Really, I only know one track. They have a typical 90s rock band vocals-guitar-bass-drums sound that I loved during that period (I guess also keyboards, but I haven't noticed it yet), but less melancholy than the Seattle music I loved. While they are definitely a rock band, I hear a little bit of pop in their style as well.
OK, after an initial listen-through, this album has very few skip tracks. It's pretty great. Reminds me of a lot of the indie music I was into when I was in high school. I wish I had discovered them back then. I probably would have played them on repeat, honestly. Not a perfect album, but the majority of songs are bangers, especially the second half of the album. My favorite track is probably Strange Ones, which features changing tempos throughout. Very happy to have found a new music group to listen to! 4/5 stars.
I am pretty familiar with Cypress Hill's later works, but I haven't listened to this album at all. They gained mainstream success with the release of their second album. The beats on this one are impressive. I'm a fan of West Coast rap, and Cypress Hill are pioneers of this genre. Will I be listening to them on repeat, though? Probably not. 3/5
Chvrches is another group I hadn't heard of, and so far I'm pretty sure I haven't heard their music until now. They are a Scotish synth-pop group and I'm really enjoying their sound. Overall I think it was a pretty good album, nothing really stood out to me as really amazingly good or bad, but it was definitely a good time.
WOW. My favorite album I've reviewed so far. As a fan of classical music, I really loved the suite overtures and all the classical sprinkled throughout the album. The music seems to transcend eras in the most beautiful way. When I texted my daughter that this was my next album, She responded, "the GOAT." I have to agree. Incredible. 5/5 stars.
Aretha Franklin is an icon. Her voice is powerful and gorgeous. Her music is timeless.
A movie soundtrack? Sounds like I need to actually watch the movie sometime soon, too. OK, I like the music, and it is almost operetic that I'm getting a story from the songs that I assume is the plot of the movie. Is it an album that I'll sit down and listen to, though? Probably not.
