This album blew my mind at first listening. It’s is in my top 60 best albums of all time and will never leave this list. Powerful, relevant political and social commentary, Tom Morello changing the guitar game for ever, great rhythm section and an incredible Zach De La Rocha spitting some of the most powerful vocals and raps hitting you between the eyes. 10/10
One of my all time favourite Jazz Funk albums. I covered this in highschool with my band. Timeless album!
Ground breaking album with some great dis tracks… shame that Snoop is now Maga…
I used to love U2. This was their breakthrough album however 3
great epic songs don’t make a great album…. The songs from this album sound better on “Under A Red Sky”
First time I have listened. Very cool. The banter is very funny considering the audience.
One of my all time favourites. One of the greatest TripHop albums.
I have never been a big fan of the Pet Shop Boys and this album didn’t change that
First listen, won’t listen again
I really like this. Reminds me of Neu!
One of the greatest albums by one of the greatest artists however not my favourite Beatles album which is Revolver.
A very important album also for me personally, part of my soundtrack of my life, reminds me of Prince a lot…
I understand that this is an important album but I never got into it….
I love The Who. One of the first bands I have ever seen. This album was released the year I was born. It features one of my all time favourite songs My Generation. Love the raw energy of the recording.
Psychedelic 60 hippie country music with endless boring guitar solos. Not my thing….
Amazing artist, great songs, record breaking album. What is not to love?
One of the greatest albums of all time. Outstanding songwriting and production by Eno/Lanois. The album shifted music and made U2 a stadium band for many decades.
Important album with some amazing songs however not one of my favourites.
OMG I love this album. I worked at Sony when the Manic Street Preachers showcased this album to the whole company in Brighton. This is their most punk rock albums, the Americans thought there were not enough guitars (WTF) and they created an American mix which didn’t make a difference… one of the most political bands around with Rage Against The Machine. Guitarist Richey Evans was still on the record and then disappeared forever…
Love the Cramps. One of the coolest bands ever.
Love! My favourite REM album.
One of the best Neil Young albums live Cinnamon Girl, Down the River and Cowgirl in the Sand
Great ground breaking album and a massive change of direction for Underworld
Great album, I knew the Kick It single but have never listened to the whole album
This is one of the greatest albums ever and my favourite David Bowie album
Not a fan at all, I love Jeff’s voice find Tim’s voice irritating
This was played a lot in my family hike when I grew up. Sentimental listening but not one of my favourites.
I bought this record when I was at UNi when it came out and I was kind of disappointed that the band broke up when it was released. Still one of my favourite albums. I love all the Smiths records.
Still the best Pearl Jam album amazing energy. You have a live time to write your first album and it shows. Great ideas and amazing guitars. I love how the end of the album is also the beginning of the albums which invites you to keep repeating. Amazing solos by Mike McCready.
Amazing album. Great atmosphere, composition, instrumentation, one of my all time favourite albums, Steve Winwood on organ and Robbie McIntosh on guitar!
Wonderful shows the strong connection between African music and the Blues
Never listened to this before. Really enjoyed it, so much fun and very diverse. Love her voice. Great production firework, however at times it felt a little overproduced…
One of best albums by one of the greatest Rock’n’Roll bands = 5 stars
Great album by New Order feat many of my favourite tracks by them like Elegia and Love Vigilantes.
Early Beatles albums are fun but not always a great sonic experience because of the limited 4 track ping pong recording technique.
It features my favourite Doors song Riders in the Storm which was the first song I ever played in a band. Most of my other favourite Doors songs are on other albums however this works great as an album. I had the privilege to work with the Doors catalogue for 10 years and had dinner with the late Ray Manzarek and his brother. I also met Robbie when they toured with The Doors of the 21st century when they toured with Ian Astbury which was actually a great show.
Great album by an amazing artist. Recorded over only 2 months with very sparse instrumentation. I saw Polly perform at Splendour in support of this album in the Moshpit one of my best ever gig experiences. Definitely 5 stars and then some. Great co production and performances by Mick Harvey, Robert Ellis and colab with Thom York
I still remember what I did, where I was and who I was with when I heard about David’s death. This album was his final song is own requiem. David Bowie is my favourite artist. Can you give 6 stars?
Great run from this generator. Literally all my favourite albums back to back. This blew our mind when it came out. On the back of the Talking Heads albums produced by Eno came this colab. Mind blowing. Sampling AM world radio and turn it into afro beat Fela Kuti inspired beats. “The Jezabel Spirit” radio exorcism….Mind blowing when it came out and still mind-blowing now. However I find the additional bonus tracks of the rerelease interesting but not necessary. The original album was more concise without the bonus tracks. “Mea Culpa” is brain melting in particular when the synth melody kicks in at 2:55. Regiment has one of the coolest bass lines.
I saw Billy Bragg late 80s in the Batschkapp/Frankfurt and I was suitably impressed he seemed like The Clash solo. “Life’s A Riot” is my favourite album and of cause the Mermaid Venue Sessions with Wilco. I was not familiar with this album. I love and knew “There is Power in the Union” and “Levi Stubbs’ Tears” and I learned to love “Greetings to the new Brunette” featuring Johnny Marr on guitar. He writes songs that actually mean something. However I don’t think it is an album you need to listen to before you die and it shows that Tue 1001 listings very heavy UK biased. “Levi Stubbs Tears” is one of his greatest songs he ever recorded.
2nd best Pink Floyd album. Essential listening for David Gilmour’s guitar playing alone….the soundtrack of high school parties…
This was everywhere. However 3 great smash hits doesn’t make a great album, some fillers here.
Great fun though.
One great and familiar song otherwise forgettable, not my thing.
Not my thing at all. Not sure how this made the list.
Only knew Spinning Wheel, didn’t care much for the rest of the album.
I am a big Morrissey/Smiths fan however never really warmed up to this album
Adele is one of the great singers however I preferred her album 21.
I am a huge The Cure fan and this is my favourite album. So no brainer 5 stars and yes I want to listen to it before I die.
Very important album and trailblazer for women in music as a confessional writer. The rawness and emotion is real. Great album however never personally connected with it, but was a huge. Sold 70 million copies. One of the great breakup records with Adele 21 and Rumours.
Amazing recording incredible voice have never heard this before. Will become a regular go to album when I feel like some cool Jazz vocals cocktail party music.
I like the Buzzcocks, but have never listened to this album. It is not their best album but a lot of fun nevertheless. Some great Punk Rock Classics on here.
Queen was the first concert I have ever seen. This album played a big part of my childhood however it has not aged well. Bohemian Rhapsody is an epic song but the rest of the album is all over the place and like a dogs breakfast. “I’m in love with my car” and some of the other songs are super cringe.
One of the best if not the best album by the great Rock’n’Roll bands of all time.
Totally not my thing. I prefer Metallica.
I have never listened to this before but it is great energy! Lemmy forever!
Once you get used to his voice it is great. More Krautrock than Punk.
Lost the vibe on this band/album…
Great album in particular the opening track.
I love Punk Rock but never got into X
I really enjoyed this album when it was released
Played this a lot when it came out
Disliked, bands like this were the reason for Punk Rock
I bought this when it came out never warmed up to it.
Classic time piece, last ever release after Kurt’s death. So many interesting stories and anecdotes about how this recording came about….
More than a feeling is a guilty pleasure the rest of this US corporate rock album wants to make me puke in particular the lyrics.
I love this album however Transformer is my favourite.
Lou Reed September 5, 2003. State Theatre Sydney. Another memorable concert featuring songs like "Sweet Jane," "Smalltown," and "Men of Good Fortune”.
In 2003 I was VP strategic marketing Warner Music planning and executing campaigns for Warner’s vast back catalogue like Cold Chisel, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart and the Doors amongst others.
Lou Reed who I am a big fan of had a show at the beautiful State Theatre. His Label Manager asked me if I would mind going to the show and meeting him after. He had a reputation of being grumpy and sarcastic. Being a huge fan I immediately agreed. Transformer is one of my all time favourite albums that I played non stop on a roadtrip through France with my friends Jens and Thorsten as highschool students in my sister’s babyblue VW.
I took my wonderful friend and artist Jade to the show.
Lou had just severed ties with Warner Brothers records but had resigned a worldwide deal with Warner Music Germany where his most recent releases still managed to enter the charts. At the time German music fans were very loyal and many artists in their twighlight of their career were still very popular. His New York album was very successful on Warner Brothers but that is now ages ago. Apparently he once said the only reason Warner Brothers kept him on the roster was that he would attract cool new alternative acts to sign to the label.
In 2003 he released a hard to digest album inspired by Edgar Allen Poe called the Raven. The German loved it and signed him.
The show at the State Theatre was interesting, Antony and the Johnsons was the support act and he blew us away ! He later would do a couple of songs with Lou. Lou’s show was great however, he hardly played any of his “hits” and even the ones that he did play were unrecognisable . Like a Van Halen style of Viscous. Also Lou had his Tai Chi master on stage performing with his sword. Jade and I made our way backstage and I kept running into people asking if they can meet Lou.
Mentally preparing myself to meet Mr. Grumpy we entered his dressing room.
He was consummate host and gentleman, shook our hands and made us feel welcome. He repeated my friends name in his New York drawl “jaaayde” which I thought sounded very cool. He offered and made us some tea and we had a chat about his show and the new album The Raven. It suddenly dawned on me that he thought that I was somehow connected to Warner Music Germany which I wasn’t….he asked me about what I thought about the Raven and he asked me to send my regards to the German CEO Bernd Dopp.
So overall it was a very pleasant experience. Record company meet and greets can be awkward at best but that was most certainly one of the best ones. Also never trust what other people say about what people say, many times in my career I got on really well with people that were described as being grumpy or difficult.
For Eddie’s guitar playing only and the first 4 songs this should be 5 stars how ever the rest of the album not so much…
This was big when it came out, but sounds a bit dated now.? They played my local club and I worked with them at Rock Am Ring also had a chance to kick a ball around with Mick.
Amazing album the first great album that I discovered because of 1001. Great production by Dangermouse.
One of my all time favourite albums the soundtrack to many European Roadtrips in the 80s. Perfect from start to finish. And produced by David Bowie!
Great album although Spaced Cowboy is a bit weird
Probably the best Jimi Hendrix album
Great and very cool. Love Brazilian Music.
One of the most influential German bands alongside Neu! and Kraftwerk. I attended their induction in the German Echo Hall of Fame by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Great album some told me the most important album coming out of Brazil.
Ok important record, great to listen to? Not really
