I enjoyed it! A lot of iconic hits on one album and still sounds fresh after a few decades.
This was pleasant to listen to in the background while I was working; however, I wouldn’t put this on to intentionally listen to it. I respect it because I am not musically inclined and this was a live performance of an hour of straight piano playing, which I do find impressive. But was it anything special? No. Was it bad? Also no. Will I listen again? Unlikely! But it did what it set out to do. I could also see this hitting if you were high.
Even as someone who likes angsty music, this isn’t really my jam. I felt like none of the songs stood out. That being said, there are a couple quintessential Green Day songs on here that I can always appreciate, and it’s not a bad record. It’s just mid.
Favorite song: Basket Case
Least favorite song: All By Myself (the drummer should never be allowed to sing again bc wtf)
A very undeniably iconic album. It’s not my cup of tea, but I do have fond memories of many songs in this album from karaoke with Jacob’s family. The title track is my favorite, and it feels wrong to pick a least favorite.
I’m not a big fan of U2, so I was a little pessimistic going into this. Honestly, I think my pessimism was well-deserved. The only merits I can give it is that the sound was cohesive. I just didn’t like the sound.
I had admittedly never heard of this man. It wasn’t until I got to “Sign Your Name” that I realized I had heard that song before on the radio. But this guy has some pipes and such a pleasant voice. It could be the fact that I had just listened to U2 before this, but I was blown away by his vocal chops. I really liked the sound of the album too, and I honestly thought there were several better songs on this album than the single. I saved Dance Little Sister and As Yet Untitled because they were so enjoyable. Dance Little Sister had me bopping and was a good time. As Yet Untitled was haunting with such a melancholy feeling. “I called on my God, but he was sleeping on that day. I guess I’ll just have to depend on me”. Sheesh, what a line. Really, really cool album! I wish I could give it 4.5 stars.
Favorite song: As Yet Untitled
Least favorite song: Sign Your Name
Listening to this album felt like a torture strategy the CIA would use on an interrogation victim to get them to ‘fess up to a crime. If a CIA agent is reading this, please credit me for this idea when you inevitably use this album to torture your hostages.
In all seriousness, the reason I gave it a one star, which is pretty harsh from me, is because I genuinely think it’s deserved. I couldn’t wait to be finished with this album. I kept checking the time, and after 10 minutes, I swear I would still be suffering through the same song. It was insane.
It’s certainly a product of its time and has aged terribly. I’m not that into electronic music in the first place, but I think even if I was, I would not like this. I hope that this is the worst album I will come across, because I don’t know if I can withstand anything that’s much worse.
This album was… fine. I could see how someone could be into this music. Not a fan of the lead vocalist’s voice, though some of the instrumentation was enjoyable. Just kind of meh about it, so much so that I can’t really think of anything else to add.
So I listened to most of this while I was driving, and I was enjoying the visual in my head of someone seeing a 20-something year-old-girl in a VW Beetle with a “Please don’t honk at me, I’m a nice person” sticker blaring this album. Anyways, Ozzy’s vocals are obviously unique, some people are into them, some people hate it. I actually enjoyed a lot of these songs due to the instruments, rhythms, guitar solos, ESPECIALLY after yesterday’s album. It stood out so much more to me as, “THIS is what rock from this time sounded like”. It was fun, and there were a lot of enjoyable records on this album. Reading some background on it, and how much the band wanted to name this album after their track about cocaine, it all made sense. I know that the drugs were going craaaazy at this time, and it really shows. I’m not saying that artists should use cocaine, but it makes rock albums go a little harder. So thanks, coke.
In all seriousness, I enjoyed this more than I envisioned I would, which was kind of the point of me doing this challenge. I would have NEVER listened to this album on my own accord, but I’m glad I have. I really want to give it 3.5, mostly because I don’t think I’ll listen to this album again, but it certainly has its place in music history and I enjoyed some specific tracks.
Favorite tracks: Snowblind, Laguna Sunrise
Least favorite track: Changes
Look, I’ll be honest. I didn’t finish this album. I’m not the Universe’s strongest soldier. I promise I’ll listen to the rest of them in their entirety.
This is background noise. That’s all it is. Sorry if anyone else feels a different way.
I know Mr. Dylan’s voice can be polarizing. But I thought this was a cohesive, good story-telling album that kept my interest. I enjoyed having some more folky sounds with harmonicas and acoustic guitars. Certainly a nice reprieve from some of the previous albums! I really didn’t mind his voice at all either. I’m not sure if I’ll listen to this album again, but it was an enjoyable experience for me.
This is what happens when you have a group of men who have never once in their lives been told “no” before. Someone should have put a stop to this.
I was actually intrigued when I saw the album we would have to review yesterday was Neil Young, as he’s an artist I know the name of but am unfamiliar with his music. I had relatively high hopes, but man, his vocal performance was too bad to give it more than a 2. I did enjoy some of the instrumentation, but Neil’s voice really ruined some of these songs for me. Like, what the hell was “Mellow My Mind”? I was wincing at some points when his voice was so shrill, pitchy, and straight up exhausted. It’s safe to say I found this really disappointing as an introduction to him, and I’m hoping some of his other albums are better (assuming there will be more on this list). But the single word I can use to describe this listening experience was: tragic.
This is the type of album I was hoping to hear starting this challenge. It was so fun to bop to while doing my work, and I feel like this album had more of a cultural impact than the vast majority of the albums we have listened to so far. This album made me crave a mojito and some good Cuban food. Very good.
This was an interesting album, to say the least. Everyone knows Paper Planes from this album, unless you live under a rock, so it was definitely intriguing to listen to the rest of the album this song was a single off of.
While this is not my preferred genre of music to listen to, I do think this album was cohesive in its sound, tone, and was certainly unique. On the surface, the songs sound a little bland in my opinion with so much repetition in many of the songs on this album. But, as I was reading the lyrics, there was an underlying message of genocide and putting a bouncy beat to lyrics that are frankly quite dark sometimes. I have to appreciate the artistry and individuality of this album, even if it’s not my preferred genre, because I was really intrigued.
Also, can I just say that Jimmy was giving influence from both ELO and early Glass Animals? Though maybe Glass Animals was influenced by this album. Regardless, I thought that song was the most musically and lyrically interesting.
I feel like I have to give this album its flowers. It had a sound, a theme, and a purpose, and it stuck to it really well. I did end up enjoying listening to this album (it helps that Supermassive Black Hole is a certified banger), and was pleasantly surprised by a couple songs that I liked quite a bit. I’m not sure if I would listen to this album in its entirety again on my own volition, but I did save a couple songs from the album, so that warrants a 4 in my eyes.
Alright, Peter. I wasn’t too sure about you when I started the album, and my intuition was right. Red Rain was a little bland for my taste. But Sledgehammer is a bop, sonically, but those lyrics were soooo bad. The first time I listened to it, I didn’t look or listen to the lyrics, which is maybe how this album was intended to be listened to. Then he lost me again at Big Time, which the lyrics were so incredibly cringe. This is the Picture made me laugh out loud, specifically the “excellent birds” line. I’m sorry, this album is so unserious. I’m giving it a 2 simply because you can’t say it wasn’t cohesive and it wasn’t the worst album we have listened to. It was just comical.
I think a 3 is appropriate for this album because it was neither good nor bad. I did enjoy some of the first few songs but the end of the album kind of lost me.
This album made me really sad sometimes. 4/5
Honestly this was kind of soothing to listen to. I could fall asleep to this.
Y’all.
This album was a TRIP. I can’t, in good faith, give this anything higher than a 2 due to the opening track giving me an aneurysm, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t have fun.
I thought this album was fine until it got to The Murder Mystery. What an awful song. Like it made me really angry. And then the last song was bad too. I’ve never seen quite the nose dive at the end of an album than what happened here.
I think this album appeals to a certain kind of person that is not me
You can’t convince me these guys aren’t serial killers.
Anyways terrible voice, god awful lyrics. The only reason it’s not getting a 1 is because the music itself wasn’t bad.
I don’t know how others will feel about this album but it’s kind of a banger imo. Kashmir is a really cool song, and I enjoyed The Rover and Trampled Under Foot.
**of note, this is the first album I’ve listened to with nice headphones lol
I was surprised by this album, I thought it was very pleasant to listen to. Sorry Paul for saying that “You Can Call Me Al” is a dumb song. I shouldn’t have doubted you.
Not the worst rock album we have had, but not the best
I did not care for this
This was fine to have in the background while working, but I would not listen voluntarily
I thoroughly enjoyed this album, this is what I was hoping to find in this album generator!!!
That was pretty good
I had no idea there was more to Oasis than Wonderwall! What a pleasant surprise
This was so close to getting a 1 from me. I’m sure it was good for its time…
