You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen

I don't, apparently. This was too moody and slow for me. Knowing the context behind it, it feels like he made his own funeral procession.

To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar
Feb 24 2026

Absolutely not my style. Was difficult to listen to.

Thriller by Michael Jackson
Feb 25 2026

Perhaps one of my favourite albums, there's not many weak points. Absolute bangers from start to finish!

Metallica by Metallica
Feb 26 2026

My entry point into Metallica. Brilliant album, these songs are constantly on my playlists 😍

Mothership Connection by Parliament
Feb 27 2026

It's alright. The one song everyone knows is good, it has a decent vibe even though it's a bit too weird in parts.

Aftermath by The Rolling Stones
Mar 03 2026

A solid early album from one of my favourite bands. More pop focused than their mid career catalogue, not my favourite but pretty decent.

Songs For Swingin' Lovers! by Frank Sinatra
Mar 04 2026

Classic Sinatra. Consistent all the way through, man's got a vibe. Was a very enjoyable car ride listening to it!

Axis: Bold As Love by Jimi Hendrix
Mar 05 2026

I've never been a massive Hendrix fan. This didn't do it for me. It feels like a product of its time TBH. Bit disappointed.

Mar 06 2026

I can absolutely say with 100% certainty I hated this to the point of irritation. Absolutely could have died without hearing this.

Surf's Up by The Beach Boys
Mar 10 2026

I was surprised by this, it's very different to what I imagined the Beach Boys to sound in my head. I quite liked it.

The Real Thing by Faith No More
Mar 11 2026

Was ok. The one song I liked but the others didn't grab me.

Exile In Guyville by Liz Phair
Mar 12 2026

I get why this album is important, but coming into this for the first time now means it's lost it's magic USP. I can definitely hear where modern female rockstars got their influences from though!

Queens of the Stone Age by Queens Of The Stone Age
Mar 13 2026

Meh. I'm sure it was great when it came out but it didn't grab me then and it's doesn't now either.

Rubber Soul by Beatles
Mar 16 2026

Oh bloody hell yes! What an awesome album! Love it from start to finish. Any day with the Beatles is a good day.

Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode
Mar 17 2026

It was ok. Didn't really blow me away but I'm not a massive fan of this band.

Highly Evolved by The Vines
Mar 18 2026

This is one of my favourite albums! A brilliant rock album from a troubled band. Some amazing songs on here!

Morrison Hotel by The Doors
Mar 19 2026

It was ok I guess? Not their best album, not a style of music I dig really either.

Jack Takes the Floor by Ramblin' Jack Elliott
Mar 20 2026

Pleasant folk music. I can see why Bob Dylan liked him.

Dusty In Memphis by Dusty Springfield
Mar 23 2026

Again, it's alright I guess? Not my kind of music

Joan Armatrading by Joan Armatrading
Mar 24 2026

It was decent but not my kind of music

Group Sex by Circle Jerks
Mar 25 2026

Short. Sweet. High energy. Solid punk. Loved it.

Aja by Steely Dan
Mar 26 2026

Background Yacht Rock. I felt like I was in a shop or an elevator. Boring AF.

Bryter Layter by Nick Drake
Mar 30 2026

He sounds like Seal! Happy music, I liked it!

Back In Black by AC/DC
Mar 31 2026

Oh yes. One of my favourite albums. Not their best one but it's soo good. Every song is worth a listen here.

Back to Basics by Christina Aguilera
Apr 01 2026

Nope. Can't stand her.

Goo by Sonic Youth
Apr 07 2026

I dig it. A bit too Avant Garde but fun.

The Band by The Band
Apr 08 2026

Too mellow for me.

Live At Leeds by The Who
Apr 09 2026

Hmm. Bit disappointing from a band I like.

Darkdancer by Les Rythmes Digitales
Apr 10 2026

Cheap eurotrash electronic music that sounds like a teenager got his first synthesiser. Really difficult to listen to. The music is jarring like nails on a chalkboard and the lyrics nonsensical. I couldn't connect with this in any way.

Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits
Apr 13 2026

Oh thank god for that. I was about to give up on this project so I needed this. Such an amazing album. There's no bad songs. Money for nothing is such a jam, walk of life loads of fun, and the haunting melancholy of the title track is such an amazing way to close the album!

The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses
Apr 14 2026

Pretty decent album, I can see where britpop got its roots from (especially Oasis). Well worthy of the list.

Da Capo by Love
Apr 16 2026

Okayish 60s pop rock.

Stankonia by OutKast
Apr 20 2026

Aww fuck yeah. Perfect for a Friday. The beats slap, it's chonky hip hop goodness.

Let It Bleed by The Rolling Stones
Apr 21 2026

Just amazing. A brilliant band at their peak. Always a treat to listen to.

Songs Of Love And Hate by Leonard Cohen
Apr 22 2026

Jesus Christ on a bike no. I almost fell asleep listening to this.

Pyromania by Def Leppard
Apr 23 2026

Aww this is an amazing album, I absolutely love it and how much fun it is to listen to!

Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins
Apr 27 2026

Aww yeah. It's not Mellon Collie but it's so good!

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
Apr 28 2026

It's very staple soul and funk. Nothing special.

Behaviour by Pet Shop Boys
Apr 29 2026

Considering their first few albums are a party, this feels like a hangover. Probably why when I was younger they weren't on the radio much.

Reggatta De Blanc by The Police
Apr 30 2026

Great album, a couple of absolute bangers and the flow is perfect.

Ys by Joanna Newsom
May 01 2026

Jesus Christ this was bad. Just boring as fuck.

Paul Simon by Paul Simon
May 06 2026

Pleasant. Better than I thought it would be.

The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan
May 07 2026

My dad has this one. I love Cars. Never understood why he's looking suspiciously at that glowing rer pyramid though. Dark moody synths. Where's your head at? Very gothic 😍

Throwing Muses by Throwing Muses
May 08 2026

Seems ahead of its time but as I'm new to this I can't appreciate it as much as I would have back when it was released. But I was too small in 1986 to appreciate this anyway.

KIWANUKA by Michael Kiwanuka
May 11 2026

Oh yes. Love this artist 😍 Great mix of soul tunes, love this ❤️

Hail To the Thief by Radiohead
May 12 2026

It was interesting. Not spectacular, I prefer their earlier stuff. Struggling to see why I needed to hear this before I died?

Siembra by Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
May 13 2026

Oh a nice change. Love this kind of music!

Born In The U.S.A. by Bruce Springsteen
May 19 2026

Phenomenal album. Great songs from start to finish. I love the rawness of his characters and the heartfelt lyrics. The production values are insane too.

The Rolling Stones by The Rolling Stones
May 20 2026

Wow what a debut album. I can't imagine how mind blowing this must have been in 1964!

Vento De Maio by Elis Regina
May 21 2026

Sounds like the parody chanel 9 songs off The Fast Show. Not my vibe, couldn't get into it. I was half expecting her to sing "KREEEEES.... WADDDUL!"

Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival
May 22 2026

I mean come on? Ubiquitous or what? Any day with CCR is a good day 😍

Violator by Depeche Mode
May 25 2026

Lovely gothic moody alternative electronic music. Fantastic😍

The White Album by Beatles
May 27 2026

Fantastic. I just love this album so much. It's such a brilliant mix of styles and some amazing songs.

May 28 2026

I can't think of many better debut albums than this. Absolutely exploded when it came out, and still so fresh today. I've got many good memories walking to these tunes on my iPod. Phenomenal and raw and brilliant.

Chirping Crickets by Buddy Holly & The Crickets
May 29 2026

It's very pleasant. I can see the roots of many other artists and styles in this. I prefer my Rock and Roll more upbeat though.

The Number Of The Beast by Iron Maiden
Jun 01 2026

Iron Maiden on a Friday? Yes. Fucking. Please. Great album, love the long buildups and guitar payoffs

Jun 02 2026

This is some good old fashioned country music. Great storytelling, lovely melodies. I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would!

Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves
Jun 03 2026

It was ok. Didn't really catch me.

Jun 04 2026

Oh no. This isn't my kind of music at all. I still don't like her because the Fugees took the number one spot from Three Lions back in the day. A real slog this one, not helped by heavy weather outside today.

Bug by Dinosaur Jr.
Jun 05 2026

Oh, they sound just like Ash. Not sure if that's a compliment yet, I liked Ash back in the day but I find them a bit whiny now. I didn't dig this. Too noisy for my taste.

Jun 08 2026

Sounds a bit old school even if the message is still relevant. Lots of anger dressed up in some good rhythm. Good to walk to.

Play by Moby
Jun 09 2026

What a great coincidence! I love this album and I'm going to see Moby in a couple of weeks! Its been a while since I played this. There's a lot of really good songs on here. It does tail off at the end though.

Halcyon Digest by Deerhunter
Jun 10 2026

It was ok. A bit boring, nothing really stood out.

Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield
Jun 11 2026

Interesting album. I knew very little of it outside the first few bars. It's a proper prog rock symphony, it's full of interesting details. The songs don't feel long at all.

1977 by Ash
Jun 12 2026

Oh boy. My first concert. One of my first CDs. I used to absolutely love this. I don't feel like it's aged well though, he sounds a bit whiny especially compared to modern Irish rockstars. Heck of an opener and some great songs though. The remaster is amazing and adds so much depth to the songs that the loudness war original mix loses.

The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths
Jun 15 2026

It's not my favourite kind of music, I did like the cheerfully gothic songs though. A couple of highlights, some boring songs though. I can appreciate it I guess.

The Atomic Mr Basie by Count Basie & His Orchestra
Jun 16 2026

Something different! I liked this as background music. It dragged on a bit at the end but it was technically very good.

You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen
Jun 17 2026

I don't, apparently. This was too moody and slow for me. Knowing the context behind it, it feels like he made his own funeral procession.

McCartney by Paul McCartney
Jun 18 2026

Oh yes! Maybe I'm amazed how good he is as a songwriter and a musician. Timeless. Fantastic. Perfect for getting over a hump day!

Kenza by Khaled
Jun 19 2026

Hmm. Considering the niche level of this album, I'm surprised it's on this list. It's good but I can't listen to a whole album of it.

Hot Rats by Frank Zappa
Jun 22 2026

Oh boy. Here we go... Odd. Organised noise. I'm too sober for this weirdness.

Music From Big Pink by The Band
Jun 23 2026

It was ok. Slow. Bland. Good for a Monday morning.

Rust Never Sleeps by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Jun 24 2026

I liked this. Easy going. Not the most knowledgeable Neil Young fan. Glad to hear Powderfinger, I love that band and I have always wanted to hear the song that gave them their name.

Scissor Sisters by Scissor Sisters
Jun 25 2026

Aww a party album the day before a music festival😍 These guys are wild, saw them a year ago, haven't been the same since. I love the camp sound, a bit Elton John, a bit George Michael in parts. And their version of Comfortably Numb is really good.

Blood And Chocolate by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Jun 26 2026

It was ok, not a massive Elvis Costello fan, it was palatable but no real highlights.

Different Class by Pulp
Jun 30 2026

I wish I was cool enough when this was released to appreciate this. It's such a good album, I've grown more and more fond of it over the years. I feel like Pulp were underappreciated despite their popularity, and that they flew under the radar because of when this came out. Always a real pleasure listening to this 🥰

Calenture by The Triffids
Jul 01 2026

"Hey mum, can we buy the new INXS album?" "No, we have that at home".

Coat Of Many Colors by Dolly Parton
Jul 02 2026

It's fine, I guess? Not her best, not bad or anything. Didn't feel it was worth being on a "listen before you die" kind of list.

Roxy Music by Roxy Music
Jul 03 2026

Love me some Roxy Music. A wonderfully quirky album. It wouldn't be made today.

At Newport 1960 by Muddy Waters
Jul 06 2026

Muddy Waters on a Friday? Yes fucking please. I only regret I don't have this on vinyl😂 What an amazing album with some timeless classic blues. It should be on everyone's lists

Nevermind by Nirvana
Jul 07 2026

Wow. What an album. Genre defining. Just amazing songs. Absolutely love this one. Everyone should listen to it.

Ocean Rain by Echo And The Bunnymen
Jul 08 2026

Beautifully produced and atmospheric, but it never really hooked me. The Killing Moon felt slow and never got going. I can appreciate why it’s considered a classic, but I’d be unlikely to put it on myself. Well made, and I certainly wouldn’t turn it off if someone else was playing it, but I wouldn’t seek it out either.

3 + 3 by The Isley Brothers
Jul 09 2026

I love this album so far. Very soulful. Perfect for the hi-fi. I really liked the rhythms, it was so chill and summer friendly.

The Dreaming by Kate Bush
Aug 03 2026

delightfully crackpot alternative pop. I love me some Kate Bush. I didn't know a lot of these songs as I've never strayed far from the singles, so it was nice to hear some deeper cuts. It feels like folk pop mixed with synthwave.

Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin
Aug 04 2026

We're back baby. First album after my holidays and what a banger. One of the Led Zeppelin albums I don't own (yet). It's heavier and a definite shift in tone from the earlier albums. It feels a bit more metal actually.

Damaged by Black Flag
Aug 05 2026

It's punk. Very punky punk. I like the punkiest punk to rock out to.

Aug 06 2026

What a joy to have this album on a wet Wednesday. Absolute classic, this is right in my lane. Been a perennial favourite. Tune in and drop out and enjoy.

In A Silent Way by Miles Davis
Aug 07 2026

Jazz. Nice! I'm not much into jazz, not that I don't like it - this album was really good. It just doesn't appeal to me as much. But I own a bit of Miles Davis and Glenn Miller, so I enjoyed this. I'm assuming it's two sides to a vinyl record with it only being two songs. It flew by, was so easy and nice to listen to.

It's ok. Not their best work. But I can see how it influenced a lot of modern rock and folk music I guess. Considering my love for classic rock and 60s music I was disappointed with this one. It's funny, the album mirrors my own childhood - emigrating from the UK to NZ.

Are You Experienced by Jimi Hendrix
Aug 11 2026

An absolute classic. It's so ubiquitous I can see why people don't think it stands out much nearly 60 years later. But this was the foundation that modern rock was built on. Really enjoyed it.

Vauxhall And I by Morrissey
Aug 12 2026

I've never been a fan of Morrissey or his monotone singing. It's well made but not my cup of tea.

Sail Away by Randy Newman
Aug 13 2026

I was utterly bored listening to this. Don't understand why it's on the list.
