1001 Albums Summary

I can see the appeal, but not my favorite. Didn't like the singer's voice, and the music little too trippy for my taste. Felt like if Pink Floyd and Rush were combined. I'm not just not the biggest prog rock guy, and I don't see myself returning to any of the songs from here.

First track got my hopes up, and I thought a lot of the more pop-centric pieces were similar to The Smile Sessions (which I loved). Too many ambient tracks for me, though. I can’t handle a minute of random beeps being a “song.”

Unremarkable. I wanted to leave a higher rating but the title track is abysmal and somehow appears TWICE on the album.

This was horrible. It was so bad I might skip every future krautrock album

Top songs: Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole (obviously), Soldier’s Poem, Assassin, City of Delusion, Knights of Cydonia I originally thought I’d only give 5s to albums everyone imagines (Abbey Road, Pet Sounds, etc.) to keep the “prestige” of the rating, and that Muse would certainly not reach that prestige. I guess I’m pretentious because this album rocks. 5/5 5/5

Solid album with some fun jams

Mentally when I listen to this, I’m controlling Tony Hawk as he skateboards around Alcatraz or the Zoo. Somewhere in the depths of the internet is a video of me playing the drums to “When I Come Around” back in my glory days. Top songs: Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, When I Come Around

Solid, but nothing special. Best songs: The Virgin, White Light

Songs are either incredibly dated or their beat sounds like a Crash Bandicoot level. First album for this I had to stop partway through.

45 minutes too long. I don’t mind the Chili Peppers but this is way too much material for an album of theirs Top Song: Under the Bridge (of course)

Solid psychedelic rock album. I liked how it wasn’t too trippy, like a lot of entries in the genre can be Top songs: Somebody To Love, How Do You Feel, Go To Her

Really mopey album that does nothing particularly well. This is the kind of music you hear when you're about to pay $20 for a burger that's served to you on a newspaper. "Two Weeks" is catchy and the only reason this isn't a 1.

Completely forgettable

Completely forgot I listened to this a few hours later and was wondering what the album for today was

Had never really gotten the chance to listen to Jeff Beck, so I really appreciated the chance here. He has some great riffs. This album is nothing spectacular but really solid. Happy I listened.

Really solid debut. I’m not a massive cover guy so I imagine I’d prefer an album of all the original songs, but still a great listen.

Abysmal writing. Some of the songs themselves aren't terrible, but they aren't particularly special either.

This is the easiest 5 of the list so far and probably a top 10 album ever. The themes of excess and lost love are executed perfectly. Fantastic guitar play and some of the best soft rock songs you’ll find. I have a theory that music nerds and critics like to hate on the Eagles just because it makes them seem more sophisticated. Sorry they didn’t make crappy experimental music like Captain Beefheart! I’m a little sympathetic to the idea they were overexposed (this and Their Greatest Hits are two of the best selling albums ever), but it’s been 50 years by now. At some point the “overexposure” wears off. Yeah the band is immensely popular, but there’s a reason for that. Their solos and melodies are crafted with precision and they can go hit for hit with pretty much anyone. This is the band’s best album by far. Thrilled to have gotten this, one of my favorites. Top songs: - Hotel California (of course) - New Kid in Town - Life in the Fast Lane - Wasted Time (the orchestral reprise is amazing) - Try and Love Again - The Last Resort

Not interesting enough to warrant being as long as it is

I love this album. More than any album I’ve found, it captures the feelings of despair and isolation that we feel at our lowest moments. Creating this was obviously a massive risk for a band coming off of The Bends and OK Computer, but I suppose the signs were always there (see “Fitter Happier”). You have to be in the right mood to spin this one up, but truly a fantastic album. I think the only complete miss from me here was the title track. “How to Disappear Completely” is the highlight. Best songs: “Everything In Its Right Place”, “ How to Disappear Completely”, “Optimistic”, “Idioteque”, “Motion Picture Soundtrack”

Can’t wait for THREE more Sonic Youth albums. Can some of the fat from this list be cut?

How much New Wave do I HAVE to listen to before I die?

I liked Blue. This album is ass. Made it halfway through before I gave up

A lot of better than I expected, I really liked the stripped down nature of this album considering how much a lot of Bruce’s other music has going on.

Really enjoyed this. First half was a lot better than the second, but still very solid. Best song was the opening track

Not a fan of 80s music

Fantastic. Man on the Moon is pretty overplayed but solid. Nightswimming is by far the best track on the album. Really beautiful backing piano with nostalgic lyrics.

Mediocre

Not as life changing as it’s hyped up to be, but really solid still

Pink Floyd’s best album. My biggest complaint about Pink Floyd are Waters’ teenage-level observations that flood Dark Side of the Moon and Animals. Wish You Were Here is far more personal and touches on feelings everyone knows. The title track is probably a top 10 song of all time.

Surprisingly enjoyed this one. I’m not usually the biggest fan of international music (I like to understand the lyrics), but this one was a great vibe

This terrible album had a hidden track. Worst surprise of my life.

Very solid. I don’t think any of it is revolutionary, but maybe that’s because these songs are all so famous that I take them for granted.

Clapton’s guitar playing on this is absurdly good. My only complaint is it’s too long, this wasn’t interesting enough to be a double album. Fantastic though, somewhere between a 4 and 5 but I’m rounding down

A younger version of myself would've given this an instant 5. I still like some of the tracks (Lost, Pink Matter, Forrest Gump), but a lot of the appeal of this album has faded for me as my tastes have changed and expanded. I'm not nearly as big of a fan of a lot of the album's tracks as I once was (Thinkin Bout You, Pyramids, Bad Religion). Still solid, just not great and doesn't stand out for me much anymore.

Really good indie rock. Could’ve been a 5 if not for a few misses, specifically on the latter half of the album

Fantastic. Cash’s covers completely change the meaning of the tracks, giving the vibe of an old man reflecting on his life. I particularly loved Bridge Over Troubled Water, Personal Jesus, In My Life, and We’ll Meet Again

You absolutely have to listen to this before you die if you’re a 15 year old in 2003. Ok honestly this isn’t abysmal, it just reeks of the early 2000s (and not in a good way). It’s fine but there’s no chance I’m coming back to it.

I didn’t hate it, but the dream-like song style can only take me so far

The type of album that only people who listen to too much music enjoy. No normal person listens to this crap. I didn’t hate a lot of the guitar riffs, but they’d always get interrupted by some random, obnoxious noise that completely ruined it.

I’ve never been much of a jam band guy, but this was really good. I thought the first half of the album was far better than the second half, but still really good overall

I try to go into each review with an open mind, but at times that’s impossible. If I’ve heard about an album a lot (like with Rumours, Songs in the Key of Life, Blue, etc.), I go into the listening experience not as critical as I would be otherwise. For better or worse, I tend to give these incredibly famous albums a bit more grace, knowing how important they could be. I say this because I did the same here, thinking there might be something I’m missing. But I’m missing nothing, this album sucks. It is really bad. I wouldn’t consider it unlistenable (typically my metric for a 1), but I really thought about it here. Yes, I know this album was incredibly influential. No, that doesn’t make the music any better. Probably never coming back to this.

Are people really still pretending this is good? It's almost been 60 years, surely we can cut the act now. "I'm Waiting for the Man", "Venus in Furs", and "Heroin" are all abysmal. The ending of the closing track is so obnoxious I turned it off halfway through. I don't care how "influential" this album is, it's garbage. I could say more about this, but I'll cut myself off. 1 star.

I really hope the hangman’s daughter likes terrible music. Otherwise this band is in for a rude awakening

Was pretty disappointed in this one. Stevie is a lot better with his funkier songs. Superstition is by far the best song on here, the rest are nothing special

The musical equivalent of being in a carnival’s fun house. What did I just listen to

Very good. My biggest qualm is the lyrics sometimes just do NOT flow well: “Richard got married to a figure skater And he bought her a dishwasher and a coffee percolator” … what? It just doesn’t flow well with the song.

Coworker taste but in the late 60s. The best song is “No Time,” but it’s the just the cheapest Elvis knockoff you’ve ever heard.

Punk might be the most annoying genre
