Album Summary

Barafundle is the fourth album by Welsh psychedelic folk band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, and was released 7 April 1997 in the United Kingdom. The album's title comes from the name of a beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Songs are often sung in both Welsh and English, and the album's influences range from twee-pop to traditional folk music. Lynn Childs, father of singer Euros and violinist Megan, plays shawm and other traditional instruments on the album's occasional medieval interludes (for example, on "Starmoonsun").

I love this album. I loved Gorky's Zygitic Mynci when I first heard Patio Song back in the 90s. Despite being half Welsh I don't understand a word of the language (don't get me wrong, there are hundreds of thousands of Welsh people living in Wales who don't either) but as with so many recordings in languages other than English, the lyrics are less important than the timbre, timing, lilt and cadence of the singer's voice, and Euros Childs' voice does a grand job. There's an actual loveliness to this record, and I'm glad I've listened to it again.

A lovely album by a great band - who fully deserve a place on the list. More Welsh albums would be a good idea; there have been so many good bands and artists from a country which is only about the size of Wales! Thanks so much for the reminder to revisit a band who meant a lot to me

This was a fun listen. Is this how the Welsh get wacky? Catchy songs that I enjoyed even though I had to listen to it on YouTube because I couldn’t find it anywhere else.

Barafundle is a psychedelic folk album. Never heard of that music style, but I guess it's not my cup of tea. I don't like the voice of the singer and the songs are boring and keep dragging on. Still I like the fact half of the album is in Welsh and that it is something original musically too, so I won't be too harsch.

I swear I wrote my thoughts yesterday. Folly, silly, atmospheric and interesting. Much better than I thought it was in the 90s!

When George Harrison took an industrial dose of mushrooms, and listened to his aunt's old Nursery Rhymes collection LP, and the isolated vocals of Television's 'Marquee Moon' album, on repeat.

Don't exactly know why, but got bored after a while. Not that it's bad, but it just couldn't keep my interest

Psychedelia strongly reminiscent of 60s/70s era American acts, a little odd coming out of 90s Wales but I didn't mind it. Nothing terribly special to my hearing but a generally amiable listen.

This album kept me on my toes in a way that I think I mostly enjoyed, had some good ramshackle energy and careening-downhill momentum in a way that came together much like the cover art collage. A pretty notable breadth of instrumentation too, which was impressive. Cool, out-there addition to the list I would've never found on my own, love off the beaten path adds like this.

As this has been effectively delisted on the majority of streaming services, I almost broke my rule and hit the "Did Not Listen" button. However, I got a track list and painstakingly searched youtube for the individual songs. I was unable to find Pen Gwag Glas or Meirlon Wylit, so I will not create a playlist for the album. This was honestly too much effort for a middlin' album. It's inoffensive enough that just about anybody could listen to it, but didn't really spark any major excitement.

Weird Welsh rock. Kinda neat but not really essentialy. Also, I learnt I just don't like the sound of the Welsh language. Just sounds silly. My personal rating: 3/5 My rating relative to the list: 3/5 Should this have been included on the original list? No.

Not that bad of an album given the band and album name that makes me think this was going to be something unbearable. Came out in 97 but definitely had a psychedelic 70s sound for a big part of it. Don’t think I’ve ever heard welsh sung out before either. Thought I was going a tad crazy. All in all not bad but I wouldn’t revisit. 6.2/10

Some sort of beatles-esque carnival old-timey stuff. Okay then.
