Album Summary

Stripped is the fourth studio album by American singer Christina Aguilera. It was released on October 22, 2002, by RCA Records. Looking to transition from the teen pop styles of her self-titled debut album (1999), Aguilera took creative control over her next album project, both musically and lyrically. She also changed her public image and established her alter ego Xtina. Musically, the record incorporates pop and R&B with influences from many different genres, including soul, rock, hip hop, and Latin music. Lyrically, most of the songs from the album discuss the theme of self-respect, while a few other songs talk about sex and feminism. As an executive producer, Aguilera enlisted numerous new collaborators for the album. Upon its release, Stripped received generally mixed reviews from music critics; many criticized its lack of musical focus, while some of them called it "almost" an album for grown-ups, with comparisons made to Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson. Commercially, Stripped debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 330,000 copies. It was certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping over five million copies in the United States. The album also charted within the top five of charts in Canada, the Netherlands, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. It was Aguilera's best-performing album in the United Kingdom, becoming the 29th and 40th bestselling album of the decade and millennium there, respectively, with two million copies sold. Despite its initial critical reception, Stripped received multiple Grammy Award nominations, including one win, and has since gone on to be called one of the most influential albums of all time, inspiring a generation of artists. The album has sold over 12 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century. Five singles were released from the album. The lead single "Dirrty" was met with criticism and controversy due to its sexual music video but was an international hit on the charts. The follow-up "Beautiful" was praised by critics and garnered chart success worldwide. The last three singles, "Fighter", "Can't Hold Us Down" and "The Voice Within", became top-ten hits in various countries. Aguilera performed several songs from Stripped live during a number of shows, notably during the 2002 MTV Europe Music Awards, the American Music Awards of 2003 (January), and the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. Two concert tours were held in 2003 to promote the album, The Justified & Stripped Tour (co-headlined with Justin Timberlake) and The Stripped Tour.

Easy 4 star. Yeah it was a little too long but she simply deserves 4 stars. Beautiful? Fighter? Classics.

I grew up with this album. A lot of the songs I haven’t heard before or didn’t remember at first. It’s a solid album for sure even if it’s pop.

I am not a fan of the late 90s, early 2000s R&B infused pop sound. That made it so that this album had an uphill battle from the start. It did not succeed in overcoming these prior biases, but it was inoffensive, at least. I agreed with most of the messages presented on the album, but found them getting repetitive over its nearly hour-and-a-half runtime, and the sound itself changed very little as well. There were more hits here than expected, but I still fail to remember them despite their popularity, and the whole thing is just of its time. It isn't bad, but every passing day makes this age worse, not due to its message, but rather the aesthetic behind it. Just a bleh feeling, it's hard to put into words, but it is easy to recognize when you go through it all.

Girl power rock pop rnb rap

Catchy R&B pop

Christina clearly has mutant lungs and is an incredibly gifted singer. That being said sometimes she does this kind of muppet type voice and I dont need every song to have a vocal run or 14. I get it, you can hit ALL the notes. Its good, dont get me wrong but I hardly feel as though this is essential listening. "Beautiful" will forever be remembered and covered for the rest of time, doesnt mean the rest of the album is even within the realm of it.

Pop/R&B? Great voice, but not my style of music

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. There are some good songs on here, but it's too long and it's not one of my favorite styles.

This was fine, I guess. She has a great voice but I don’t know. I was never into her. Some songs here are great and some are forgettable. I’m trying to just rate it as its own thing and separate having lived through this era and not liking it then and find myself failing. I think it’s over produced and would be better if they let her really let it rip and strip out a lot of the production. The song with Alicia keys is a good example.

Ok pop I guess.

Her voice is great and quite a few hits and for a pop album I found it had its moments. However 70 minutes is very ambitious and I could definitely feel the drag of this album and I needed a break to finish it

That certainly is what pop music sounded like in 2002.

It's not offensive, but it's also not great. Would rather listen to anything else really.

She’s got an insane voice, and there are a few standouts on here that are genuinely good. But a 1 hour 18 min runtime for a pop record is insane! It’s simply not good enough to sustain my attention for that long.

About this album: *Instrumental version of Beautiful in the background* "You are boring no mather what they say Your songs on this album can bring me down You are boring in every single way Yes, your boringness can bring me down, oh yes So you did bored me today" So: 1/5

This album wasn't written for me then, and it doesn't resonate with me now, but Christina Aguilera is one heck of a vocalist. I admit I rolled my eyes when this appeared on my list, but I've given everything an honest chance. I got about 40 minutes in, and thought, "Ok, yeah, that wasn't all that bad. I'm glad I gave that a shot." ...then I discovered there was another 30 minutes left--this maybe could've been curated into a 35ish-minute 4 Star album.

Might have been a 3 if it was half the length, but as it stands this is an ok album that overstays its welcome.

Never spent a moment listening to this gal. My bad. This album is decent, bordering on good.

Pretty good

woof dude

Quite enjoyed. Between 3-4 stars.

8/10 Buen album. Tiene cositas que meh, pero en general tope, ritmos muy buenos que no aburren

High 2 low 3 for me. There are some good songs, but it's too long to keep their strength over an album.

Some great songs and powerful voice plus slick production. Too long and doesn't add up to a fully satisfactory listening experience.

Where Back to Basics feels like Christina Aguilera is overthinking everything, Stripped feels more direct, bold and intuitive. There isn't a single dud across the track list and it absolutely makes for interesting, radio friendly, contemporary pop music with a big personality behind the mic.

Solid 3 for Xtina due to length and filler interrupting hits

xtonabike I’ve seen shorter films

Hmm… alt-Britney I thought on seeing this. Sugar-coated pop, I thought. And it’s 80 mins? Sheesh… But then, it’s better. Lush production aplenty, and it’s all probably too long. But this “take me serious” album has been done before, and successfully, by Madonna, Janet Jackson (Rhythm Nation is a classic), and others. And this deserves to be in the same league. She has the voice, some of the sassiest, and the songs support that. I actually quite enjoyed.

Reinvention mission accomplished. I know Christine probably wanted to show off everything she could do but if this had been edited down to a tight 45 minutes this would have been an absolute belter.

Not my thing but fair play it's a strong album.

Back then I wrote her off as the villain in the Britney wars; a media-invented death match between two pop princesses. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Fighter - Beautiful - Dirrty

Not for me. I forrgot Dirrty was spelled with an rr. I wonderr how many college orr grrad school paperrs werre wrritten about that spelling.

Eh, just not my thing. She can sing but the whole thing just isn’t for me.

When this came up, I said out loud: “You have got to be kidding me.” I expected to hate this. But, I actually enjoyed it a lot. Christina’s got pipes! When I thought about if I would relisten to this, or even imagined putting on a vinyl of it, I knew that wasn’t something. So that’s a 3.

A very pop-oriented album. I sometimes find this genre a bit boring. That's the case here, too. A few tracks on this rather long album are great, but overall, the music is uninteresting and irrelevant. 3/5

Good tunes some hit some miss.

Oh man. It's 2002, I'm drunk on a sofa at a house party. We are too young for this shit. The music channels are on and Dirty comes on for the 100th time that evening. Minutes later I'm throwing up Smirnoff ice and crashing on a floor. Terrible memories 😂 ------------------------------------------------------------ Manufactured pop princess with feminist message for everyone but her? To me -this was landfill pop in 2002. In 2026 I can see a little more to like, but I am surprised to see Xtina here. + Fighter is a great song that I'd actually forgot all about. Generally there are some well made pop songs with a wide range of influences - RnB, Latin, Rock being key tonal aspects. - The vocals gymnastics put me on edge. This is not going to leave much impression on me. I don't think it's essential. It's far too long. I'm rating this higher than the miseducation of Lauryn Hill. I think that is illegal. Now I need some Bolt Thrower to save my ears. A generous 2*.

Great intro song. Beautiful is a hit obviously. It's a very strong record

In 2002, I was a 9 year old girl receiving constant messaging that female artists were not to be taken seriously and were objects to be sexualized or mocked or both. All that to say, I never listened to this album. What a shame because this album rocked.

It’s got soul, it’s got blues, and most importantly my 13 year old self had no idea how lucky we were to have Beautiful and Dirty on the one album. The messiest, prettiest contradiction there ever was.

As an 11year old, I was very annoyed that some of these songs played non stop from my sister's room. Now, I thought it was really good!

This is the most early-2000's pop ever. There are definitely some good songs here. The ballads are all pretty nice. Fighter is a great song. This met my expectations.

This was one of my favorite albums as a kid! Sure, maybe a 5-8 year old me shouldn't have treated this album as gospel, but I remember feeling so cool when I listened to it. While this 5 stars definitely is tainted by nostalgia, I know how influential this album was for my generation of girls growing up. Also maybe my sexual awakening? Still need to unpack that.

The sassy, sl*tty, badassery that is ‘Fighter’ and ‘Dirty’ had me adding those tracks to my “party Mix” burnt CD at the time it came out. Considering I was mainly listening to Pantera and Marilyn Manson at the time, being a 14 year old school girl meant it was inevitable to be privy to the pop and RnB everyone else was listening too. This album had Christina breaking out and aiming to show the world she wasn’t the cleancut girl next door that Brittany portrayed and this album was a step toward a darker side from her previous album and tbh I liked her for that. There is no denying her voice is amazing even though we are tired of hearing it. Would I buy this record if I saw it in the $5 bargain bin - definitely not (I'm just not a pop girly enough to care to collect it) but I probably still have the hits on my old burnt CD’s

Pop commerciale

Un peu déçu je m'attendais à mieux mais c'était assez standard

Standouts Fighter Dirrty

DNL- Default 2

This was a nice surprise and enjoyed it. It was a breath of fresh air after hearing some really mediocre rock and new wave albums for the umpteenth time.

I mean, obviously I am not the target audience for this. One song annoyed me as it seemed to be a blatant rip off of Overload by Sugababes (bonafide pop classic)

File this in the ‘not for me’ category. But I would rather listen to this than Genesis / Rush / Grateful Dead etc…

I... actually.. quite liked this? Or at least, I didn't dislike it nearly as much as I thought it was. Xtina ha a very decent voice and range, there was quite a lot of variety, the production was decent, it was moving in parts and also incredibly daft. Other than being about 30 minutes too long, it was a surprise success.

New to me and absolutely dreadful, no where near as bad as say “Genesis” or “Van Halen” but still really very unenjoyable indeed. One star, although “I’m OK” is a very moving song. Tom.

I have serious respect for her pipes, but I am not fan of her style.

Not boring, not derivative, and not bad at all. This early oughts pop album caters to the independent female who is aware of the world around them, the double standards between men and women and give an attitude of "i don't care, still going to be me." But ol' Christina here caveats all this with, ima bad bitch but I got feelings and sometimes they trump my attitude. Two iconic songs paired with some radio filler. Was pleased to see Alicia's composing skills on this album. Wasn't disappointed to see a redman feature but it was on the weakest track. This album serves its place in the lexicon of pop and music. A proper rating is 3 because this doesn't quite fall in my preferred range of pop albums I enjoy, but it is one I can appreciate

As a 22 year old striaght white male, this music does not speak to me. 3/10 for being bold

Boring and way too long

too long

Not a lot of this album stuck out for me and I don't think it needed to be a double album, but the sound is a vibe. "Beautiful" smacked me in the face with nostalgia. Rating: 3

Definitely not my cup of tea, but that doesn't take away from the talent on display. Christina's voice is incredibly powerful and dynamic. The album's production has razor precision. Overall, I didn't gel with the songs, but I have a lot of respect for the execution. Highlights: "Walk Away", "Fighter", "Impossible"

Pretty generic pop album. Overstays its welcome, however. Decent vocals and some catchy tracks.

I think she has an amazing voice. With that being said, I feel like this album was way too long. I think she could have stripped (pun intended) out a bunch of the songs and had a tighter, better album. Again, such an amazing voice.

Blast from the past. It's amazing how many of these songs I knew and could sing along to. A lot of good tunes here, for a jam packed album.

Christina Aguilera has an amazing voice and there’s some fun pop songs here. It’s also way way too long. If it was half the length then it would get an extra star easily.

Exceptionally long some bangers though, fighter is better than dirty fight me. The standout track is the voice within though.

Pure pop. Definitely not my thing. I know who Christina Aguilera is, and that's about it... It's quite catchy, and I can absolutely see just a few songs in where this rocked the boat. Pretty open and honest about its sexuality and female empowerment, which wasn't huge at the time, especially from a former child star and teen idol. It's not my thing, but I can absolutely see why this album hit and why Aguilera launched into the stratosphere. What a voice too.

Really surprised by how long this is. There are some great songs on here. I really liked it again on second listen. The first half is really strong but then it sags a little under the weight of several slow songs in a row and mostly carries that energy to the end.

When an album pops up that I somewhat familiar with and don’t love, I instantly get in a certain mindset. And this is a very long album too. The good is she has a great voice. The bad is I just don’t prefer this style. I’ll give her three stars for vocal talent and really putting herself out there.

After Slipknot yesterday, the 00s are giving us a real kicking this week. What was going on with these overlong albums? Just because you have all this content, you don't have to include everything. As for the album, it feels as though the vocal acrobatics and musical borrowings are doing a lot of work to cover over some very ordinary and generic pop songwriting. Bereft of genuine feeling, and not particularly interesting as a cultural artifact. I came to really dislike the sound of it. 1.5*

I will say it straight up, does this need to be a must-hear album before one dies? No, I do not believe this is a must the one has to hear before eternal sleep. I wonder what about this is remarkable or where it stands out enough that it's a must hear album. Yes, it has some good parts, but Christina's voice though stands out to me as one of my 'no's' for this album, not a fan of the roar-like vocals. Just really don't think this should've been include on a must-hear list, not sure what the guy was thinking. Maybe he started to realise there aren't 1001 albums that are good, so he started chucking slop on here. Highlight Song/s: "Loving Me 4 Me" and "Beautiful"

I listen to it this morning while rebuilding a flight of stairs to my girlfriend's back door. It was nice to listen to while I worked but I can't remember a single note of it a couple hours later

She can sing well but I grew tired of it or quickly.

Iconic voice. Emotional. Rhythmic. Instrumentally textured.

On its own, looking back at this album, I like that Christina has a wider range of genres in her music than her pop cohort. 4* Highlights: fighter, beautiful, the voice within

Y2K to the max. Sexy and spicy. "Walk Away", "Fighter" I am less than half-way through and I am honestly so bored. I may have to DNF this album THEN "Beautiful" comes on and it is obviously great. I don't think this album is for me though, I don't want to continue.

There’s no denying that Christina Aguilera has a good singing voice, but I’m not a fan of her singing style (way too many flourishes), and the music is your bog-standard corporate early-2000s slop-pop. This is the kind of stuff that turned me off from MTV and hit radio stations back in the day. It seems to me that artists like Aguilera were always more about showing off the glitzy lifestyle and selling a persona than actually attempting to make enjoyable or deeply felt music. The lyrics and the themes of “sexual liberation” feel like they were put together by a marketing team. There are even a couple token “rock” and “rap” songs here, but they only serve to show that Aguilera and her producers don’t really understand those genres.

I really liked this but it did seem a little long

Damn catchy

The lead off single “Dirrty” and the provocative cover strike me as following the all-too-familiar playbook for Disney pop stars coming of age. That playbook uses sexual confrontation as a substitute for emotional maturity. Not a fan of that playbook. But the second single “Beautiful” is what really gained traction here in the States. And the three singles after that also spoke to self-esteem and personal healing, each in their own way. Those themes, I believe, are the true heart of the album. “Stripped” is one of two albums on the list by Christina Aguilera. Each exceeded expectations. But while I’d like to go higher, a strong 3/5 seems like the most honest landing place for me.

One of the best singers of the 2000’s, and not a bad pop album either.

Some songs are good but the album itself is quite mediocre 2/5

This sucked

This was everywhere when I was younger. Her voice is very cool, but I quickly got over it.

Hard for me to love, hard for me to hate. Outside of the nostalgia and the cringe of a really weird time in music and pop culture, I am blown away by her voice. Why did she crash out? I always think that Adele was the market correction of Amy Winehouse, but maybe it was Amy Winehouse that market corrected Cristina? Was she the better white girl R&B singer? IDK. I liked it. Meg enjoyed it.

Sian score

Not my cup of tea but I agree hugely influential

Pretty decent album with a lot of hits that I recognised, probably Christina Aguilera’s best era

This album is really soaked in early 00s sound and production. One of its stronger features is Christina's voice, but her voice is more of the 'objectively good' kind, the kind that wins american idol. To sum it up, there are some songs that are ok, like 'Fighter', but as a whole it's anonymous and boring. Sometimes it feels like the songs are only there for Christina to showoff her singing abilities. I suppose it's fine if you're into that. And then there is the length of the album. It is waay tooo loong. Why does everybody in the CD era have the compulsive need to maximize the usage of the format? Now I think I have to stimulate my brain with some Trout Mask Replica.

Iconic!!! But had to give it a three because there are some difficulties with the album, the biggest difficulty being making it all the way through ‘love me 4 me’. Great songs, mid album.

It’s good. It’s not fabulous and I don’t know how often I would listen to it but it’s good
