Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Arctic MonkeysInsanely great debut, one of my favourite albums ever… 💥
Insanely great debut, one of my favourite albums ever… 💥
Using the Apple Music Star rating for each track. I rated this, on average as a 4.5 out of 5. The stand out tracks for me were Blue Orchid, My doorbell and Take, Take, Take.
Didn’t think I was going to enjoy this but turns out I really thought it was great. Using the Apple Music rating system gave this album an average of 4.6 out of 5 for me. Stand out track for me was Mother’s Daughter. Also on a side note the production of the album is top notch. Thanks for introducing me to this great album.
Again not really something I would listen to but overall enjoyed it. Many of the songs seemed to use the same musical theme if that’s the correct word. Did enjoy the well known ones though.
One of my first introductions to Metallica when I was at school. The album was passed around a group of friends. Absolutely hooked me in and have been listening to them ever since, nearly 40 years. One of their best albums in my opinion, love it.
Have to admit, I thought that this was better than I expected it to be but still didn’t really enjoy it. Not my bag I guess.
I thought that is was gonna be a hard listen and boy I was right. Just didn’t really connect with the album as a whole. I know a lot of people love it but I guess it’s just not my bag. Apple Music Rating was 3.6/5
Wow! Hip Hop/ Rap is really not my thing but I thoroughly enjoyed this. Sprinkling the instrumental sections between the actual raps is brilliant. Will definitely listen to this again. Apple Music rating system was 4.6/5. I have rounded it up.
I have never heard of this artist and will probably never listen to this album again. Really didn’t enjoy it. The music/ tunes were lovely but I just didn’t like some bloke talking over them.
Have never heard of this band but I was only 9 when this album came out so I guess I can be forgiven. Turns out I really quite enjoyed it and will probably listen to it again in the future.
Have always enjoyed a bit of Supertramp but from a greatest hits perspective. Have never listened to a studio album. Really enjoyed it. Will definitely be listening to this again in the future.
Really enjoyed this. Reminded me of the “Backbeat” soundtrack which is no bad thing.
I have recently listened to some of Royksopp ‘s later albums and enjoyed them so when this appeared on my list to listen I was quite excited to listen to the debut to see how far they had come. I listened to this while on a walk first thing in the morning and it suited that activity perfectly. Really enjoyed it.
Classic!
This album was quite enjoyable. Not usually something I would listen too. 5 star’d a couple of tracks so they will be played again at some point but probably won’t listen to the album as a whole again, but you know, not bad by any stretch.
Classic album that I have never listened too before in its entirety. Has a very good tracks vicious, perfect day, satellite of love but also has some mediocre ones for example make up and wagon wheel. Overall though enjoyed it.
I have only ever been exposed to 80’s ZZ Top, Legs, Sharp Dressed Man etc. This is so much better than that style. Really enjoyed it. La Grange is obviously a classic but Waitin’ for the bus, Jesus just left Chicago, Beer Drinkers and Hellraisers and Precious and Grace are also bonefide Bangers! Rated it 4.6 stars in Apple Music.
This is why I signed up for this… music discovery! I have never heard of this band and I was in my late teens in 1989. There is some very good tracks on here but also what I would classify as filler. Overall though an enjoyable album
Only listened to a bit of this on YouTube as it doesn’t seem to be on Apple Music or Qobuz. Had to turn it off as it sounded like all the instruments were being played by different people in different places at different times. Just a cacophony of noises.
I really enjoyed a lot of the tracks on this album but felt it was let down a little by the weird 20-30 sec tracks which personally interrupted the flow of the songs. But for a band I have never listened to I feel it is good and will defo listen again.
This was ok. Didn’t enjoy it as much as the other white stripes album I have reviewed so far - Get Behind Me Satan. There are a few good tracks to my ear - Fell in Love with a Girl and We’re Going to be friends to name a couple but there is also a few duffers for me, Aluminium and Expecting… but overall I enjoyed it. 3
I have to admit that I have never listened to Sarah Vaughan until today cause I thought “ oh that sort of music isn’t really for me” Boy I was wrong, I loved it. As soon as the MC did his introduction I was hooked in, then she forgets the words and it’s all kept in as a true depiction of what the concert was like. The only mistake I made was listening to this while on a walk. This really should have been listened to late at night, in a wingback chair with a nice glass of whiskey.
A bit boring really. For example the track How does it feel? Takes over 5 minutes to change the notes played for the duration of that 5 mins. Thought Revolution had potential but no. Enjoyed let me down gently and suicide though. No real 5/5 tracks for me though. Not for me really, glad I only listened to the original album and not the 2 hour reissue.
Some people see Prince as some sort of musical genius. I however think he is a dude that wrote some good tunes and this album obviously has some of the really good ones.. the title track, little red corvette and Free but then there is others that just don’t click with me, like Automatic. Overall it’s enjoyable but I do think there are more Prince albums with more good tracks on…
Brilliant album. Have listened to a lot of The Jam but not really much solo stuff. This is a banger for sure. 54 minutes just flew by.
Bright and breezy album. Listened to this on a sunny morning walk and it was perfect. Obviously stand out tracks are you make me feel so young and I’ve got you under my skin but there were plenty more that put a big smile on my face while I was listening. Will definitely be playing this album again.
This album is top class. I absolutely get why this is on a list called 1001 Albums to listen to before you die, this album so deserves to be on it. Love it.
I have flirted with various Rufus tracks in the past but have never listened to an album all the way through. After track 1, Oh What A World I thought it was going to be a bit of a slog as I didn’t really enjoy it. After that though the album just got better and on the whole really enjoyed it. Stand out tracks for me were I Don’t Know What it is, Natasha and 11:11. Good album will definitely listen again.
This album brings back very fond memories of driving to the golf club in the place I grew up in with my best friend at the time during the late 80’s. Discovered this album based on a recommendation and this cassette was constantly on. An absolute cracker of an album which takes me back to a summer of golf, windows down and carefree living. Love it
I think this album is lovely and I do like listening to it but it also makes me a bit sad due what played out a few years. Very sad….
Never been a massive fan of reggae and my exposure to Bob Marley has just been the legends greatest hits album. But I really enjoyed this. Obviously No Woman No Cry is a classic but also Lively Up Yourself, Rebel Music, Natty Dread and Bend Down Low also stood out.
B.I.G A.I.N.T F.O.R M.E.
What a great album. Tears Dry On Their Own and Love Is A Losing Game are stand outs for me and a record that is crammed with other great songs. Such a shame she died so young, definitely an artist that makes you think “ I wonder what she’d be doing now…”
Interesting fact, when you use Apple Music Karaoke feature that isolates the music, the RHCP sound amazing, the music is really good. However once you add the vocals it all takes a nose dive. Don’t like the voice and the lyrics are all too often laughable. Never really enjoyed the band and don’t ever listen to them, listening to this was tough….
To me this album has vibes of “ we’ve had some success so let’s experiment a bit” which I have no problem with. What I don’t get is why some artists create lovely tunes which they have here and then spend half the album just talking over it. I am definitely not a fan of this style of album.
Enjoyed the rawness of this album. A bit like early Beatles Albums it’s a bit simple but you know awesome things are on the horizon. I enjoyed it in the same way as earlier Beatles albums, they are good but you know there is better.
I searched and downloaded this not expecting to know any of the songs on the album. Pressed play and Bang! “Someone to Love” played. Oh these guys did that…. This sounded like a typical Californian 60’s summer of love album and I dig that man! Really enjoyed it, now where did I put those flowers…
I have always avoided Bob Dylan albums because his voice aggravates me somewhat. But, somehow, for the most part I was able to see past that and listen to the music which on the whole I found to be beautiful. I know there is probably other Bob Dylan albums on this list and now I am ok with that as this record has helped me see past the sometimes annoying voice.
Well, here we are. In my previous review of Tres Hombres I mentioned I wasn’t a fan of the 80’s ZZ Top and now that this album has come around I stand by that statement. It’s all just a little dated and cringy. Even the songs that are supposed to be the back bone of the album, the singles just sound a little embarrassing. Not a fan, much preferred Tres Hombres.
My only dealings with Nick Cave’s music is his collaboration with Kylie. Haha. But I know someone who admires him and his music so when this came up as my review I was intrigued and a bit excited. And you know what I enjoyed it. I imagined that he was hired by a classy wine bar in a city to sit at a piano and sing while people were enjoying themselves and his goal was to suck their happiness out of them so he could feel a little better about himself. He was the in bar entertainment and I liked it.
Turns out, Van is the Man! Great Album
I enjoyed this album but I think I could have died not having listened to it to be honest. It’s all a bit generic and unremarkable really.
I was by no means a Wham or George Micheal fan growing up in the 80’s but this album is special. Transports me back to my early twenties and being introduced to it by the then girlfriend and thinking, ooh this is not Wham Rap or Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, this is grown up. Beautiful voice, beautiful music and Waiting For The Day will always have a special place.
Overall I didn’t really connect with it. I like rock, I like prog rock, the flute in rock is inspired but ultimately I just didn’t like most of it. There were some good tracks, Mother Goose, Up To Me and Locomotive Breath. Maybe it needs a few more listens as for some reason I want to like it.
At the least with the Sex Pistols who know what they are talking about. What was this noise? Poured Demestos all over this. “Kills 99.9% of germs dead!”
Growing up as a kid in the 70’s and 80’s you had to make important choices - Sega or Nintendo, Spectrum or Commodore and then later in life Take That or East 17! I am guessing that’s what it was like in the 60’s. Beatles or Stones and my parents were definitely in the Beatles camp. So I wasn’t really exposed to them and haven’t really sort to seek them out, choosing myself to listen to the Beatles. So imagine my horror when it is suggested to me I need to listen to a Rolling Stones Album. Well I didn’t have to fear it, they are actually quite good, still not as good as the Beatles though….hehe
My Elvis Costello listening has always only been the more famous tracks and then not really many listens of those. So I was intrigued when this popped up as an album to listen too. And… I really enjoyed it… will defo listen to more of this.
Not his best album I don’t think but it’s up there definitely. Obviously love the 2 better known tracks and really enjoyed the Across The Universe cover with John Lennon, along with Can You Hear Me. Solid!
Had never heard of this band. Some of it was ok but most of it was over indulgent noodling. Have not kept it in the library after I listened to it. Enough said.
Started off ok but just deteriorated for me as it went on… and on. Not for me, shame.
An absolutely brilliant album that has some all time classic songs on it. Listening to the album just fills my heart with joy and puts a smile on my face.
I know this has a reputation of being one of the best live albums ever released. I had never listened to it until today and boy oh boy I enjoyed it a lot. From the songs, to the commentary, to the audience reactions and the prison announcements. Loved it and highly recommend even if you are not really in to Mr Cash like me.
I really liked weird Bjork back in the nineties. I thought Debut was brilliant. Then she started getting weirder.. and I think I made an assumption I wouldn’t like it and it wasn’t for me. Well how wrong was I. I throughly enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Turns out weirder Bjork is good too.
Well this album surprised me. I thought The The were a completely different genre to what I was presented with and as a result have never listened to them before. Turns out they are pretty good and this album is very enjoyable.
Absolutely not a genre of music I listen. I admit that I don’t really know anything about dance/electronic/ house music but I do know I enjoyed this for what it was.
For me this is one of the 4 best Depeche Mode albums, black celebration, this, violator and songs of faith and devotion. I think with these 4 albums they became darker and moodier and I like that. I am gonna give it a 4 as I think black celebration and violater are better and would get a 5. Still brill though.
If The Bends and OK Computer are 5’s then that must mean that this album can only be a 4 for me. It’s very good just not as good as those two albums consistently wise.
Well that was a nice surprise. Never heard of Fela, know who Ginger Baker is. Great pairing. Enjoyed that.
This album is a lovely calm listen, the mastering is sublime, it sounds amazing. This was so close to being a 5 but the last song just lets it down a bit. Shame.
This is a good Michael Jackson album but not his best. Has some bangers on it, but also has its fair share of misses. Enjoyed it, will listen again for sure.
Never heard of this band, really kinda enjoyed it.
Not having heard of this artist I read some of the reviews already up about it and it sounded promising. Listened to the first few tracks and I agreed mainly with the reviews. Then for whatever reason it just started to sound a bit samey and dare I say it a bit boring. Nothing to not really like but will probably not go back to it.
Definitely judged this band by the way they looked back in the day.. I was only 10 when this album came out but they did have a creepy look about them. Haha Turns out I really enjoy them and this album.
This album is very close to perfection, just a few tracks fall short for me. Computer Blue and Darling Nikki. The rest are superb.
Searched this one out on YouTube as was the suggestion and I just couldn’t get into it. Just sounded like an extended Within You Without You but without George and less interesting.
Love this album but it’s not quite as good as The Queen Is Dead
Bookended by 2 absolute masterpieces the rest of the album is ok… Other stand out tracks for me were Midnight Rambler and Country Hook the rest were a bit run of the mill.
Every so often I listen to an album and I think to myself “ Why is this on the list, am I missing something” didn’t enjoy the music or the voice much. Very Forgettable I regret to say.
A cacophony of noise. Some of which went together but mostly did not. Not for me sorry.
I actually thought this was good, didn’t recognise any “hits” from it but I thought there was some good track on here and I would listen again definitely.
There is some good stuff on this album but I wouldn’t call it a classic Bowie album and certainly not one I needed to listen to before I popped my clogs.
First time listening to this as an album in its entirety. Enjoyed it but I think the 2 singles do a lot of heavy lifting an your sort of waiting for them to come on…
Insanely great debut, one of my favourite albums ever… 💥
Country isn’t a genre that I gravitate towards and I guess this album, not really knowing that much about country music is OK. It’s not something that would get another listen, not because it’s bad more so I’d rather listen to something else.
I am not sure how this made the list of albums you need to listen to before you die. I could have quite easily enjoyed the rest of days without listening to this. Sorry
Loved the music, loved the songs, loved the comedy.
What a strange little album. Either the songs were good, musical and catchy or they were mediocre, with the vocals being a bit grating.. Enjoyed some of it, other bits I can leave.
Great album but I think the follow up is better.
Found it quite interesting and pleasant to listen to at the beginning then it just got a bit samey towards the end.
Definitely not a genre I listen to but as always I will give these things a go and it wasn’t half bad. In fact I’d go as far to say that I actually enjoyed bits of it.
Thankfully it’s only 37 minutes then I was able to move on…
Jazz eh? I found this to be good background music
I do like his voice but this album seems a bit more whiney than Want one. Didn’t enjoy it as much
This is the very first album that I remember getting. Guess it must have been Christmas 1979 which made me 8 years old and I loved it mainly cause of message in a bottle and walking on the moon. Listening today it still sounds great but at least I now don’t have to deal with the cassette getting stuck in the player and using a biro to wind it back up 😂
I enjoyed this album way more than I thought I would and even though Hip Hop/Rap is not my thing historically I would listen again.
Really enjoyed this. Jimi Hendrix is well talented, he could go a long way… oh wait, hang on!
I was very excited to see this album drop on the list. Of course I know More Than A Feeling! Off to a banging start then I was left a little disappointed. It promises so much and don’t get me wrong it’s by no means bad I just expected a little more.
Thought that this album was pretty good. Not a massive Nick Cave fan but enjoyed the listen
I wasn’t expecting to like this album. Fell into the classic “ don’t judge a record by its cover” but I enjoyed it. Will I listen to it again… maybe!
When this album started I was like oh no, I really wanted to like some good old folk music but this isn’t great but as the album went on it grew on me, the songs, his voice and all by the end I was glad I persevered with it.
I was introduced to Rush by school friends around Hold Your Fire in 1987. I was hooked and have listened to this album countless times. When I saw it on the list I still shrieked with joy. One of their near perfect albums. Love this album so much.
30 years later still sounds fresh and unfortunately some of the themes covered are still relevant today. That said a great album. Love it.
This was pretty bad…
Great voice, great album. Highly recommended
A very beautiful album, a lovely voice, very personal and brave.
This is a good Radiohead album but it is not a great Radiohead album. Just think there are better ones but it doesn’t stop me in really enjoying it.
Great voice, great songs, great album.
