One of the more critically-overrated albums of my lifetime. Less an artistic statement than one of surrender. It's not that there aren't *good* songs on this record, it wouldn't get 3 stars if there weren't, but even the good songs have a sort of funeral emptiness to them, perhaps a measure of self-awareness as the band retreats from their artistic peak to the safety of glossy productions and lyrics full of empty platitudes.
