Radiohead
4/5
Ok this list is fucking with me now. Radiohead on back to back days just as I called them probably the most overrated band ever. At least I heard of this record. This was definatley the best one yet. I’d consider giving it a 4 and yes I will. It’s good stuff.

Arcade Fire
3/5
I expected a lot more from this record. I was a little disappointed. I wanted to love it. That said it’s three stars. It was fine.

Iron Maiden
5/5
One of my favorites ever. This record changed things for me. Just saw them live this weekend - 42 years after this record was released. They are still amazing - best live band ever and I’m not sure this is their best album. Easiest 5 star rating so far. No brainer.

CHIC
3/5
I enjoyed this more than I should have. Yes it’s disco but great playing, great production and not obnoxious. Savoir faire instrumental may have been my favorite. A part of me wants to give it 4 stars but I won’t.

Michael Jackson
3/5
Michael Jackson’s breathy vocals are so corny to me. Man in the mirror is a song that I absolutely hate. Smooth criminal is the best song on the record. This is no thriller but can’t deny the cultural impact of this guy at the time. He was huge. But I still like weird Al’s version as Fat. Ham on ham on ham on whole wheat. All right.

John Lennon
4/5
Aside from the title track starts very slow. Forgettable melodies. Picks up as it goes on. Can hear how Tom Petty was influenced by him. Gimme Some Truth probably my favorite.
Pixies
5/5
Opening song immediately took me to Muse - Knights of Cydonia (sp). Also hear The Talking Heads. This album came out in 1990 and I never heard any of this nor ever heard of Pixies being talked about. Harmony section of “The Happening” is a highlight. Overall exactly as I expected. Imagine myself in a coffee shop in Brooklyn being served coffee by a dude in a. brown sweater and beanie with a beard. Second listen is much better. I like this album.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Already knew the hits from this one - I did discover Racing in the Streets, Candy’s Room and Something in the Night. Bruce bores me, no denying his genius though.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
5/5
This is a fun album - charismatic voice, great production, no filler. I really enjoyed this. Stand outs are Zero, Hysteric, Soft Shot and Heads Will Roll. My 16 year old son said Heads Will Roll is still a house party staple, can get play in weight rooms. Best album generated on this program so far.
Santana
3/5
On first listen I was surprised how much I like the album as a collective whole. Songs like Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va as stand alone songs are boring as hell to me. As part of collection it feels different. Mother’s Daughter was an immeadiate highlight to me on first listen and I really like Samba Pa Ti. That said - it’s still boring but you can’t deny his talent. The thing that really is annoying is he sounds like my brother in law singing.
King Crimson
3/5
I always see this record as a must listen for an innovator in the prof rock genre. Been meaning to listen - excited for this one. Have a feeling it will take a couple of listens. Well, it’s fine. Of course it’s innovative, progressive, talented musicians etc. It’s just pretty boring. I “liked” a song or two but I’ll likely never come back to this album.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
Zzzzzz….so boring. If I want to listen to Bob Marley I’ll put on Legend.
The Cure
3/5
Definitely a moody album - not as winey as i thought it would be. I liked it but didn’t blow me away by any means.
Wilco
4/5
Didn’t know what to expect from Wilco - figured just another indie 90s band. I really like this album. I will listen to this one often. That said it’s bloated - cut the filller and it would be awesome. Too long.
Jerry Lee Lewis
4/5
This was actually awesome. Studio recordings of these songs are soooo boring but I felt the energy in the live recording. Enjoyed this one.
LCD Soundsystem
2/5
Monotonous, boring dance music - nothing catchy, nothing makes me want to go back to this album. One interesting song is New York, I Love You…but that’s it.
Tears For Fears
3/5
Of course I knew all the hits from this one. Head Over Heels is my favorite form this. Good album - nothing new to discover here. I’ll likely never come back to it.
Fats Domino
3/5
This record isn’t in Spotify. I had to create my own playlist based on Wikipedia track listing. I listened to it and deleted the playlist. Not bad - just boring. I get the importance just not my thing.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
Jesus another Bob Marley album. Again, it’s fine but all I need from this artist is Legend. Tempted to skip. Finished it - I thought Am-A-Do was interesting.
The Temptations
3/5
Surprisingly didn’t know any song except Papa Was a Rolling Stone and that was too long and boring. Run Charlie Run lyrics took me by surprise. I think I Ain’t Got Nothing is a pretty good tune.
Boards of Canada
3/5
Never heard of this. So far it’s noises and tones. No melody, nothing memorable. Caught myself bopping my head a couple of times. Excellent background music for a restaurant or something.
Nick Drake
3/5
Never heard of this guy. Boring so far. Nothing grabbed me here. Can’t deny the guys talent just didn’t do it for me. It maybe a grower but not interested enough to continue trying. Interesting story about him - very sad.
Sarah Vaughan
3/5
Super raw live album. No frills just her singing. I never heard of her nice voice. Very jazzy - starting scatting and some improvisation. It was fine I’ll never go back to this one again.
The Zombies
3/5
Iconic song off of this is Time of the Season - almost doesn’t fit on this album as a whole. Nothing unexpected here except influence of Beach Boy type harmonies - especially on Care of Cell 44. I also liked Hung Up on a Dream.
Iggy Pop
3/5
Of course I knew the hits well - it’s aagin what I expected from the late 70s punkish era. Two songs kind of stood out - Tuen Blue and Fall In Love With Me. I guess the legend of Iggy is in his live shows - the album was just kind of uninspiring.
DJ Shadow
3/5
Another album full of instrumentals. No groove, no melodies. A DJ with nothing to dance to. This is the closest for sure I would give a 2 star review to. The guy must be doing something right though. Not for me.
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
I really like this one. Diverse, no low spots and catchy. Mulitple songs covered by multiple artists. The 13 minute instrumental Sex Machine probably my favorite.
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
I was pumped to see this up next. Not sure if you call it rap or hip hop but this album is awesome. I think I love it. It’s smarter than I thought it would be. Backseat Freestyle, m.A.A.d. city, Good Kid are favorites so far.
The Police
4/5
Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon are classics. The rest had some catchy spots, definitely some filler on here. The quasi reggae ska music gets a bit boring for me. That said Stewart Copeland is a beast on drums and Sting is an underrated bassist - enjoyed listening to them. Solid 4.
David Bowie
5/5
I love Bowie - when I saw this was next record I was apprehensive as I don’t know any late era Bowie. This album is amazing. I love it. The Stars is a highlight, Dirty Boys is terrible. Overall Classic Bowie sound. Very entertaining. Time to read up on this one more.
Fleetwood Mac
3/5
I’m not the biggest Fleetwood Mac fan around. This album is lame. Only highlights are Stevie Nicks songs and they are all pretty lackluster - only song that caught my attention was Angel. The “upbeat” Buckkngham songs are so dumb. Like me the morning after the Super Bowl, this album is bloated. All that said I get the importance of FM, just don’t understand the dynamic of the band and not sure I care enough to find out.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Only know two songs off of this record. Not anything I didn’t expect, but the dude is a legend. I think the magic of Hendrix has to be his live show, not his studio albums. This record was more diverse than I expected it to be. Worth noting his band is extremely talented as well.
Tracy Chapman
4/5
Funny this popped up. She is all over the place after performing at the Grammies for the first time in a very long time. Fast Car is such a great song - looking forward to listening to full album. Nice album. Nothing groundbreaking. Solid easy listening chill album.
Janis Joplin
4/5
Joplin time was always just a sloppy drugged out singer. I actaully like this record. Spotify only had the deluxe version and I found myself listening to all the demon and love tracks as well. Her banter in studio was annoying, she was sloppy love but that sloppiness and that rasp are part of the charm. I would have loved to see her perform live.
Fiona Apple
4/5
Always heard of her in 90s but didn’t know any of her songs. Enjoyable album. Nothing overly memorable but a lot of respect for her talent and songwriting abilities. Kind of album I’d listen to on an airplane. I enjoyed this one.
GZA
2/5
No idea what this is. Ah - 90s Gansta Rap. This just isn’t good. Bad production, boring beats. Didn’t bother delving into the lyrics. Apparently this guy was part of wu tang clan - I get his influence on the genre but I don’t like this one at all.
Soundgarden
5/5
I love soundgarden. Know this album well. Looking forward to listening again. Easily the best album this app generated so far. Oddly enough the worst song here was the lead single Spoonman.
Public Enemy
3/5
Legends in hip hop - not for me. Respect who they are and what they have done.
Billy Bragg
2/5
Three songs in and I’m sick of it. Don’t see how anyone outside of the UK can connect with this. Folkie rally songs. Lame. Hate to do it but I have to give a 2.
Astor Piazzolla
3/5
Very relaxing pleasant sounding live recording No reason to never revisit this. I’m sure I’ll hear it as a movie soundtrack or something. Three stars I suppose. Not something i NEEDED to hear.
Elastica
3/5
When I saw this immediately thought this was some pop synth euro stuff. Soon realized it was 90s punk/alternative generic stuff. I recognized the third song - it was in a commercial. See That Animal is actually a good song. Some catchy stuff - basically a steaming pile of meh.
Michael Kiwanuka
4/5
Truest don’t judge a book by its cover so far. Of course I expected this to be a 70’s ethnic funk thing. Then I saw the release date. Then I saw on Spotify this guy has over 5 million followers. Three songs in and I really like the vibe, the voice - very soulful. Listened to this twice and will seek out more from him. I’ve been dazed is a stand out track.
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Classic. Not much else to say here.
Fred Neil
3/5
Never heard of this guy. First impression is a hippy version of Elvis doing a country vibe. I imagine these songs working well in a David Lynch movie. The last song was an instrumental - kinda interesting. Reminded me of Jane’s Addiction. It’s fine. I’ll never listen again and likely won’t remember that I actually did hear of this guy.
The Cure
3/5
Didn’t see the need for another Cure record. Never heard this one so it was good to listen to it. It’s fine, wouldn’t come back to this one.
Beastie Boys
4/5
Beastie Boys are great. I figured Paul’s Boutique was the “seminal” album. I’m sure I know most of these songs. Well - I didn’t know most of the songs. I love this record. Awesome vibe, very cool to hear a couple of hardcore roots songs. Strong instrumentals. This is actually surprisingly close to a 5.
Pulp
4/5
Can’t say I have ever heard of these guys but one of the songs from this album is in my liked songs playlist. This is a really good record. Europop with strong Bowie vibes. Great melodies, fun record. Common People is an awesome song. I like this a lot.
Cat Stevens
4/5
Nice chill record. Great melodies - Wild World is a classic. Father and Son is beautiful. This is the first time I ever sat down and listened to Cat Stevens. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Radiohead
3/5
Five songs in and this record is doing nothing for me. I’m trying. I came into this with an open mind. Radiohead is always regarded as innovative and influential. This is boring. OK Computer is awesome according to my 16 year old son. Mind you he is a huge hip hop fan so that is saying something. Based on this record I really don’t want to listen to any more Radiohead. Creep is an awesome song. Maybe I’m not “cerebral” enough for this. Going to be hard to not give this one a 2 star rating.
Baaba Maal
3/5
First really international record. Just couldn't connect to it at all. Definatley can hear western influences here certain bluesy grooves, certain Caribbean reggae vibes. The closing song was the standout here. Made it a 3 star album. Nice guitar solo.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
More Hendrix - ok I suppose. I always thought this was a live recording. Lots of stuff in here that I never heard. All Along the Watchtower and Voodoo Child are awesome. Great stuff. Are You Experienced is better in my book though. Tragic death - who knows what this guy would have come up with next.
Sam Cooke
3/5
This was a fun listen. Sam Cooke live took me by surprise. High energy, dare I say cocaine fueled? Reminded me of the Jerry Lee Lewis live a little while back. Great stuff. Couldn’t help but think of the Dewey Cox movie and the drugs they did. I expected crooning - got something I’d like to check out video for.
Metallica
5/5
Ah, Metallica right when they sold out. Been a fan since 84 and initially questioned the change in direction from thrash to “mainstream.” This record is a monster. Once of the best sounding records I have ever heard. Five stars is not enough here.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Not my favorite folk album I’ve heard here. More of a poet than songwriter it seemed to me at first listen. Not coming back.
Haircut 100
3/5
Had no idea what to expect here - never heard of these guys. Seems like they would fit right in with the new wavey MTV origins. After listening, I suspect these guys may have influenced men at work or Duran Duran. Great sax work, jazzy and iobeat. The album is fine.
Stereolab
2/5
Didn’t like this at all. Not in a great mood so I’m giving a 2. I hardly ever give 2s.
Ray Charles
4/5
Ah - ear bleach after yesterday’s crap. Great stuff here. What’s not to like.
Bill Evans Trio
3/5
Appreciate the talent, but jazz is just directionless to me. Sounds like they are warming up.
Joan Armatrading
4/5
This turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Really enjoyed her style, sound and swagger in this. Need to find out more about her and why she wasn’t a more popular artist.
Richard Thompson
3/5
What a boring record. The only thing that saved it was the fact that they snuck in bonus live tracks that I sat through. The live version of The Calvary Cross save this listen. Gave it three - came close to a two.
The Who
5/5
Haven’t heard this in a long time. Nice to hear it without the broadway treatment or the celebrity guest spots. I remember being in high school wondering how a 24 year old can singularly have the vision for a project so big. Great stuff.
Cyndi Lauper
3/5
The lead single from this album gets on every last nerve. This came out when I was in 7th and I didn’t like it then and I don’t like it now. Money Changes Everything is the best song from this album. I thought she had written all these songs - only a partial credit on some.
Bob Dylan
4/5
My first time sitting to listen to Bob Dylan. I enjoyed this way more than I had expected. I see why Tom Petty sounds as he did - Dylan must have been a huge influence. Didn’t realize Dylan wrote Tambourine Man. More overall melody than I expected, great lyrics. Good stuff here.
Pere Ubu
1/5
This was absolute trash. I hated it. My first 1 star.
Manu Chao
3/5
I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Enjoyable listen, fun and great production.
Peter Tosh
3/5
Nothing notable here. Nothing bad either. Reggae is just very unoriginal to me. Thankful the record was only 39 minutes long.
Elliott Smith
4/5
Wow, this one took me by surprise. I don’t know much about the Beatles but this feels a lot like them. Overall sad vibe. I think this is one of those to listen on a plane with zero distractions. A lot going on here - first listen I love it.
Alice In Chains
5/5
Amazing record. Dark, sometimes sludgy, but incredible melodies and memorable songs. Musicianship is top tier. The Staley/Cantrell combo was amazing.
Otis Redding
3/5
Enjoyable stuff - left me wanting to hear Sam Cooke or Smokey Robinson. Wanted to hear more original Otis Redding - Rolling Stones covers. Easy 3.5 - but rounding down to a 3.
Queen
3/5
I know Queen well enough to know about them - lots of filler songs I never heard. It’s a fine album - didn’t move me. Potentially didn’t pay enough attention, but I blame the record for not grabbing me.
The Pharcyde
4/5
I was prepared to write about 90s hip hop blah blah. This is that but I really actually enjoyed this. Never heard of these guys - it was fun, easy and a pleasure to listen to. Another 3.5 - but I’m rounding this one up - fun stuff.
Metallica
4/5
This record always kinda bored me. One and Harvester of Sorrow stand out. The production is freaking terrible - one of the thinnest sounding metal albums ever. There is no bass, no need to go into that story. Just listened to the remastered version - it’s better than I remember, sounds better too.
3/5
I dug this - maybe I didn’t pay close enough attention to the lyrics but not overly political. Great vocal harmonies, long jamming songs. I found myself focusing in the bass playing - fun listen.
Massive Attack
2/5
I can’t find anything good to say about this at all. Amateurish.
David Bowie
3/5
David Bowie - awesome. Can’t wait to listen to this and discover some deep cuts that I know I’ll love. Never heard this album. Ok - I know a couple of songs great. Track 8 come on - ok little atmospheric. Then the record just stays that way. Waste of time. Came in expecting to give at least a 4, came close to giving it a 2.
Faust
2/5
Nothing enjoyable about this at all. I think this album generator is trolling me.
The Cars
4/5
Banger after banger. Enjoyed this one.
The Flaming Lips
3/5
This was an interesting one. I think I liked it. I’m not sure. I know I need to listen to this one multiple times to get it but not sure I will. Instead I will likely listen to some piece of crap this app generates tomorrow morning. Maybe another obscure moods and tones album.
Sade
3/5
Liked this far more than I thought I would. Easy smooth jazzy with Latin overtures. Hang On To Your Love was my favorite here. Nice album. Smooth Operator is almost a memeish song.
Funkadelic
3/5
Super freaky interesting album. Glad I listened.
Metallica
5/5
Really no need to listen to this one. I know it too well. Metallicas best I believe. I still remember when I bought it.
John Coltrane
3/5
A much more entertaining jazz album than the last jazz album I heard on here. I enjoyed it
Duran Duran
4/5
The three singles are bangers. Very much guilty pleasure tracks. The rest was surprisingly catchy. I will say the bass playing is exceptional. Pleasantly surprised. Rounded up to a 4
Dire Straits
4/5
I enjoyed this waaaaayyyyy more than I thought I would. Great sounding record. Still don’t know why So Far Away is the opening track.
Tom Waits
2/5
I know there is a market for this guy and he seems like someone only musicians and songwriters can respect. I just don’t get it. And I think that anyone that likes him likes him because it could potentially be perceived as “cool” or “hip.” For that reason I give it a 2. I don’t get the “genius” of Tom Waits.
The Fall
3/5
Interesting album, I can see why some people may like it. Not my jam. Glad it was brought to my attention I never heard of these guys.
Supertramp
3/5
I can only take these guys in small doses. The record is fine.
Boston
5/5
Nearly perfect summer day drinking album. Banger after banger, no filler. Memorable melodies, love the vocal harmonies and of course the guitar harmonies. Easy 5.
Buena Vista Social Club
3/5
This is out of my wheelhouse. I can’t say if it’s good or bad. I suppose if I have to host a party where it is Latin music themed I can have this playing on repeat. I wouldn’t know the difference unfortunately.
Common
3/5
It’s fine nothing earth shattering here. As I drove my hip hop loving son to school I asked if he ever heard of this guy and he said I think so, sounds familiar. As he got out of the car he leaned back in and said, oh that’s Kanye on this track. The only song that stood out to me was They Say.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Yep I get it Bob Marley is great. Enough with his albums though.
Count Basie & His Orchestra
3/5
Good stuff. All I pictured with this music was the Naked Gun collection of movies. “Interesting” album cover.
The Velvet Underground
3/5
Was surprised not so much that I enjoyed it but more so how much I didn’t dislike it. There weee actual melodies and musicianship. I was expecting a lot more like the song The Murder Mystery. It’s fine, it’s New York artsy, it’s not my wheelhouse.
Pantera
5/5
Better than I remember - haven’t listened to the deep tracks off this one in a long time. Heavy as shit and they were still very popular. Maybe I’m getting older and I still love metal, but when I listen to this it just sounds so adolescent. Torn between a 4 and a 5 - sticking with a 5. Pantera kept metal alive during the 90s.
Fugazi
3/5
I get why this is here. It was like pretty good early “alternative” music.
The Divine Comedy
3/5
Catchy killer album. Not sure if it’s to be taken seriously. Reminds me of englebert humperdick.
Massive Attack
2/5
Finally remember what these guys remind me of - Flight of the Convords. Except this is not funny. At least this record is a little better than the last one. I suppose I’ll give it a 3. Just finished. Changed my mind. This is a 2. So corny.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Another really good record. I’m shocked I like this one also. Maybe it’s the recent Dylan releases that are supposedly terrible.
Fleet Foxes
3/5
I know I listened to the whole thing but can’t remember it. Clearly not my thing. I’m giving a three cause it must not have been awful.
Black Sabbath
5/5
This is a tough one. I want to give it 5 stars - foundation for metal, so iconic, great songs, etc. But quite frankly the record is under a half hour long and there are three duds. This deserves a 4. Fuck it giving it a 5.
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
It’s a fine pretty generic 90s album. I didn’t hear greatness here. The second half was catchier for sure. Just a regular 3 spot here.
The Pogues
3/5
Presses play - Jesus Christ I can’t believe I need to listen to this for an hour. It’s not bad - it’s a genre and clearly there is a market for it but this like this is solely for a bar on st Patrick’s day or a movie soundtrack.
Big Brother & The Holding Company
3/5
Raw, dirty bluesy album. Stand out for me was Ball and Chain. Jains Joplin would have been awesome to see live. But listening to her in car or home is something I can only take in tears, small doses.
Sonic Youth
3/5
Exactly as I expected it. Monotone, sloppy and raw. No song on this record should be over 4 minutes. Kool thing I actually knew - a version of it was on guitar hero.
Mott The Hoople
4/5
Damn good stuff right here. Very fun record. All The Way to Memphis and I Wish I was Your Mother are stand outs for me. Very Bowie-ish. I think Bowie wrote All the Young Dudes for this band.
Yes
4/5
I was pleasantly surprised - not as proggy as I expected it to be. Happy to finally listen to a full album from this band.
The Doors
4/5
I was hoping to like the deep cuts more than I did. The hormone the are legendary though. I was always fascinated by the doors. I made the mistake of watching the Oliver stone movie about them and it was so freaking annoying.
Radiohead
3/5
Still don’t get this band. Just doesn’t do it for me even though I want to like this stuff. Not bad - i just don’t feel it.
k.d. lang
3/5
Nothing wrong with this record but there is nothing really outstanding either. Pleasant voice. All very mellow. Nothing outside the box here.
Van Morrison
3/5
Very nice bluesy, jazzy record. Nice to hear a collection without brown eyes girl. The last three songs on this collection were outstanding. Great live album. Close to a 4 but keeping it at a three.
Dire Straits
3/5
Nice easy rock record. Great guitar playing. Really liked the last song I think I’ll go back to that one. But it’s an easy record to stop paying attention to.
Deep Purple
5/5
This record is a beast. Never listened to the whole thing. No duds, really liked pictures of home. Each member is a master of his instrument.
Booker T. & The MG's
4/5
I didn’t know the song Green Onions was that song. Iconic song. I really enjoyed this. These songs personify the era, used in tons of movies. Great bluesy instrumental record.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
I mean it’s fine. Early 80s new wave. Nothing memorable at all. I guess they influenced people and that’s why they here on this list.
Jacques Brel
3/5
French theatrical songs. Guy has a super powerful voice. I wonder if singer from Rammstein was influenced by him. Tolerated this better than I thought I would.
Jeff Beck
4/5
Pumped to listen to this one. beck is always cited as one of the best guitar players by guitar players. Never listened to anything deep by him. Good stuff. Didn’t realize he was with rod Stewart this early in career. The Brit’s for sure dominate the bluesy rock genre. Feeling generous. 4 stars
Blondie
3/5
Good record. Little punkish, little new wavish, little polished. I would guess this is the record that made her a star.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Impossible to say what is Led Zepplins best. So much great stuff and 4 incredibly talented dudes. Yeah this album is incredible. Love the moby dick right into bring it on home. Probably the greatest rock band ever.
Gang Of Four
3/5
I can see this as influencing lots of 80s artists. Underground and hipsterish before hipster was even a thing. I love the sound of the electric guitar but this was so screechy and off key it got annoying sometimes. I’m giving it a three just because it must have been unique at the time.
Miles Davis
3/5
A very pleasant sounding record. That said I forgot I heard it. Talent, legacy blah blah blah.
Waylon Jennings
4/5
He’s no Hank William Jr but I kinda likes this and I’m not a big country guys. This feels like it’s the Led Zep II of country records. I can give this a 4 appreciate the talent. It’s wasn’t obnoxious.
Johnny Cash
3/5
This was interesting. More about his banter than the actual performance or the songs. I get he’s an icon but his music is pretty boring.
Talking Heads
3/5
One really good catchy song with a lot of experimental trying too hard to be interesting songs that go nowhere. Boring album but not bad. Just not great.
Tom Waits
3/5
This was interesting and I am really glad I listened to this record. As a live recording it was fun to hear Waits entertaining and interacting with the crowd. As much as I didn’t like the first album I heard this one was jazzy, it felt like he tried to sing and it really sounded like he was enjoying what he was doing. It was refreshing!
X-Ray Spex
3/5
I get what this is supposed to be. It’s good for what it is and I suppose people heard of it and were influenced by it.
Iggy Pop
3/5
Another one of his albums that didn’t really do anything for me. Most interesting thing here was the collaboration with Bowie on Cbina Girl. Had no idea Iggy’s version existed. I just glad Bowie took that song back.
Queen
4/5
Queen is so good. I love Brian Mays playing. Always thought this band can do anything musically. Some really corny pieces on here - but still a very solid 4 but can’t round up to 5. Great stuff.
The Who
5/5
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. I love this album. Not a boring note played throughout. Near perfection.
Flamin' Groovies
3/5
Surprisingly straight ahead rock and roll record. No gimmicks but not memorable either. It’s fine.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
4/5
Never loved these guys. Prefer Allman Brothers. Anyway this is a classic. Would have give a three if the song that smell was on this. I hate that song. Automatic 4 for free bird.
Aimee Mann
4/5
I really liked her work that I heard on the soundtrack of Magnolia. Always. Liked her voice found it very soothing. Her one hit wonder with til Tuesday is still a good song. Looking forward to this one. Well it started out pretty guitar driven. Second half was very mellow. Interesting record. Not sure I would revisit it. That said I’d round up to a 4. I’m in a good mood.
Alanis Morissette
3/5
I like some of these songs individually. As a collection she is very annoying. This was huge when it came out and she’s still performing but still rests her laurels on this record. Also I overrated the last album no way Aimee Mann should have gotten a 4.
Jorge Ben Jor
3/5
Actually way different than o expected. Nice to broaden horizons but I’ll never listen again.
Muddy Waters
4/5
So glad j listened to this one. This is what I think of when I think of the blues. I thought this record was from the 60s. Bad ass record.
Emmylou Harris
3/5
Never heard any of this - very pretty voice. Definitely a talent. It’s a fine album nothing worth revisiting.
Shivkumar Sharma
3/5
Very well produced record. Great playing but let’s be honest. Boring. Never listening again.
The Police
4/5
Peak police for me. I ruined the song every breath you take for my wife as I told her it’s about a stalker. Title track II is my favorite here.
Dr. Dre
4/5
Not as awesome as I thought it would be but still understand why it’s a classic. Gets annoying after a while frankly. I’ll probably give it a 4 just because of its influence and longevity.
50 Cent
3/5
Better than I thought it would be. Liked second half better
The Prodigy
3/5
I got high this past weekend and I think I’m would have enjoyed listening to this then. This reminds me of the movie Go. Very 00s. I like this record more than I thought I would. It makes me want to do drugs.
The Libertines
3/5
I lessened but I don’t really remember. It must have been boring. Briitish punky, alternativsh basic stuff. I think I have heard of the band - maybe one of the members is very famous - I’m not sure and actually don’t really care.
4/5
I’ve been waiting for a Beatles record to come up. Never listened to an album in its entirety so looking forward to this. It should be noted I always thought the Beatles were overrated. Yeah it is fine I’m
Not blown away.
Jethro Tull
4/5
Not just jazz flute. This record rocks. I liked this as a collection. Great mix of folk, some parts heavy, some parts really catchy. Well done record.
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
I really enjoyed this one. Not sure I will revisit it ever but it was a good listen. Not obnoxious, it was catchy. Great 90s hip hop. Wonder if other records were as good.
Eurythmics
3/5
Outside of the title track nothing grabbed me. I was distracted today so admittedly didn’t give this my full attention.
SZA
4/5
Never heard of this lady - almost 70 million monthly listeners. It’s actually a pleasant record. I enjoyed it. And she actually has a nice voice. I think I’ll give this one a 4. Pleasantly surprised.
David Bowie
4/5
Bowie is awesome. This is an easy 4.
The White Stripes
5/5
Jack White is just a ridiculously talented dude. Makes playing the guitar sound easy and I believe is a hugely talented song writer. He just understands rock and roll it seems. This is a solid 5 for me - I love it.
Britney Spears
2/5
This is a joke right? I did it. I listened to the whole thing. I am now listening to 8 hours of Iron Maiden on shuffle to cleanse my ears.
Hole
2/5
This was a stupid record. So generic for the era. I firmly believe she would have been nothing without cobain. This was so dumb.
Miriam Makeba
3/5
This was pleasant to listen to. Liked hearing the origins of the lion sleeps tonight. Glad the writer of this song here got a credit on that hit. Same with House of the Rising Sun. Incredible voice and control by this woman. Glad I listened. This is the kind of stuff I am here for. Not Hole.
R.E.M.
5/5
Admittedly I don’t know REMs full catalog but for my money this is them at their peak. Aside from Stand, which was a single, this album has no duds. Love it. I’m giving this a 5. Takes me back to college, even though it came out while I was in high school.
The Notorious B.I.G.
4/5
Yeah this was bad ass. I liked it.
Norah Jones
3/5
Pleasant enough album. Adult contemporary music by a young woman. It’s good. Not too memorable. Dare I say boring.
Dolly Parton
3/5
I recognized the title track. It’s a fine album. I get she’s an American icon and all that but didn’t feel like anything groundbreaking to me.
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
This record is a monster. I love it. Maybe some filler ans it is an 2 hour record, but all part of a story quite honestly I never bothered to try and really learn about. 1979 is a truly outstanding song that even my kids love. The drummer is fun to focus on - talented dude. Ok so did some reading and it’s not really meant to have a story, more just like the entrance of emotions a kid can go through in a day.
Thin Lizzy
4/5
Wow. This has heavier moments than I thought it would. I love it. Totally hear the influence on a band like Iron Maiden - especially Emerald. Twin guitars soaring and great bass playing. Catchy tunes. Fun stuff.
Queen
3/5
Hmmm. I don’t recognize any one of these songs by title. Very curious now. Nothing memorable. I suppose you could hear the potential they had. This record had some corny lyrical themes.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
2/5
Well this is annoying. The album is not carried on Spotify. So I listened on YouTube. Listening was even more annoying. I have no idea who this artist is - I am guessing Tom Waits? Also I see some Zappa references on Spotify so there’s that. This does not seem genius to me. I am proud of myself for making it through. Basically it is one of those cool to get records. If not liking this is wrong I don’t wanna be right.
Pearl Jam
5/5
Another one of these that I am not sure I need to listen to. This is in regular rotation. Great debut album that helped keep hard rock alive. Yes hard rock. Not that terrible grunge term. Only thing wrong with Pearl Jam is the political pushing they do. One of my favorite live acts.
Sonic Youth
3/5
Yep more of the same - don’t see the need for more than on Sonic Youth record. Same out of key, punkish, alternative indie stuff. I respect it but can’t say I really like it. Three solid stars.
The Rolling Stones
5/5
I have heard of this album. I have seen it on many lists. I finally saw the stones live this past summer (2024). Looking at the track list I don’t recognize one single song. Looking forward to listening. Ok I know a few. Tumbling Dice is a song I forgot all about. Love that song. There are a lot of songs. Was worried about bloat. This record is fucking awesome. It’s a 5.
Elvis Costello
3/5
Cool little record - took the “corniness” out of 50s music style. I like it. Certainly better than a lot of other crap on this list. Gave it a three.
Eric Clapton
3/5
Clapton is boring. Always has bored me. This album is no different. Although I will say the song Let it Grow is interesting. Not bad. Just boring record.
Nick Drake
3/5
Oddly enough I have been thinking about this guy recently for some reason and been meaning to revisit the last one from this list. This record seems to be more of the same - perhaps more accompanying instruments than the last one - I am not sure. Anyway I am drawn in. I think I will listen to this and previous often and actually pay close attention to the lyrics.
Genesis
3/5
Obviously not the genesis I’m used to hearing. But what a band, Peter Gabriel voice is so good. I hear the influence on Marillion for sure. Very proggy and no chance of this going mainstream. I liked it not sure I have the time to keep going back to it. I can’t remember anything I heard so it’s a three for me. But I could be short changing this one.
B.B. King
3/5
I wanted to love it but it was boring. Nothing grabbed me. It was fine I’ll never listen again. Safe three stars.
Beatles
4/5
Lot of cover songs on here. It’s good music - just not a huge fan still. Lots of respect but it’s not grabbing me.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Solid record. I always seem to enjoy Stevie Wonder.
The Allman Brothers Band
5/5
I can listen to the guitar by this band all day. Are they a “jam” band? I suppose they are but it sure doesn’t feel like it. Well Whipping Post clicking in at 23 minutes constitutes “jam” for sure. Always loved seeing them live. Give me this over lynard skynard all day long.
Wild Beasts
2/5
Eye roll. So dumb. I think this is the first one I paid as little attention to as possible. Not as bad as some other stuff but I can’t give it a three. It would be insulting to the other threes I gave.
Kraftwerk
3/5
I can see this being influential. I think i heard the police song invisible sun on one of these. Definatley not bad but won’t come back to this.
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
Another great pumpkins record. Buzzy, diverse, catchy but I always find myself drawn to the mellower parts of this record. Not a great voice but Billy Corgan is a super talented dude. Love it.
Femi Kuti
3/5
Much much better than I thought it would be. Actually added a song Stubbor Problems to my liked library. Well produced, singer reminds me of Bob Marley. Three solid stars.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
This was a pleasant one to listen too. I enjoyed it. Gotta respect Marvin Gaye. 4 easy stars.
The Rolling Stones
5/5
I love this too. It may be better than exile on Main Street. I slept on the stones for too long. Another 5.
Wu-Tang Clan
3/5
This didn’t work for me. Not bad just kinda boring at first listen and I won’t come back. It’s a shame cause I was excited to listen to this one.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3/5
Much more raw than I expected after hearing the last one with heads will roll. Reminded me of white stripes at times. I like this band. Glad to hear this.
The Fall
3/5
This was dumb but at least it felt like he tried. Corny record. I’ll still give it three. Again at least it sounded like he cared.
Billie Holiday
5/5
I loved this record. Beautiful, dreamy, soothing.
Robbie Williams
3/5
This is soooo British. I thought Robbie Williams was from some classic rock band like the Band or something. This guys must have been the inspiration for aldous snow. Hard to take seriously.
Coldplay
4/5
Damn. I really like this. I always pass off Coldplay as overrated. Listening to this on headphones in airport and I really like it. Easy 4 stars.
CHIC
3/5
I enjoyed this more than I should have. Yes it’s disco but great playing, great production and not obnoxious. Savoir faire instrumental may have been my favorite. A part of me wants to give it 4 stars but I won’t.
Kacey Musgraves
3/5
I was expecting overproduced country pop. This was a very nice listen. I can see this on in the background of a day event. I was hoping her voice was a bit more appealing. You could argue it’s a one trick pony, generic, etc, but I enjoyed it. It’s funny I read some other reviews on other albums and people really delve into the lyrics and subject matter. Maybe it’s me but I can’t that level of detail after one listen.
The Byrds
3/5
It’s interesting to listen to deep cuts from these bands that you only hear one or two songs from. It’s a perfectly fine record. The more interesting aspect of it is the undeniable influence it must have had on Tom Petty.
Steely Dan
4/5
I always had a mental block with cat Stevens and steely Dan. This album is awesome. Yacht rock at its finest. Apart from that it just sounds awesome. The production is top notch I can hear every instrument so clearly. Easy 4 stars for me. It should be noted I am a 50 year old male lol.
Stan Getz
3/5
I forgot I listened. It was smooth samba jazz fusion. Guys voice wasn’t great. The last song i liked very much.
Carole King
4/5
I remember this record seemingly always being on. In the car, at my grandparents house, on tv, etc. I’ll be generous for the nostalgia factor. 4 stars.
LTJ Bukem
1/5
This was annoying on many levels. Not on Spotify, redundant drum machines. No melody no feeling. Didn’t bother to listen to the whole thing cause listening on YouTube is annoying. Closest to 1 star yet. In fact it is one star.
The Dandy Warhols
3/5
Pleasantly surprised here. Not that it is an awesome album but rather surprised it didn’t suck. I was prepared to tolerate but actually kind of enjoyed.
Moby
3/5
This reeks of early 2000s. All I picture is that dumb Leo DiCaprio movie about a beach. That said it’s solid I don’t hate it.
Willie Nelson
3/5
Exactly what I expected. Nothing to elaborate on here.
The Doors
4/5
Ohhh, lot of songs on here that I don’t know. La woman is my favorite doors song. Wonder how much of this record is filler. Very bluesy. Wouldn’t call any of it filler. I like it. Easy 4 for me.
Motörhead
3/5
It’s a classic band, a classic song, and the record was better than I expected it to be. I never bothered to dive deep into Motörhead - as the line in the song goes - it’s all the same to me. Three stars - nothing wowed me.
Christina Aguilera
3/5
This looks terrible - and it’s a double album. Ok I’m half way through. The word that keeps coming up in my head is unnecessary. This record is not needed on this list. This record is not needed by society. The over singing by CA is unnecessary. I’ll stick it out. About 40 minutes left…back half of the album I was looking up song credits. The lead singer from 4 non blondes wrote a lot of it and she is apparently a song writing machine for lots of people. At least I learned something from this listen.
Heaven 17
3/5
This is not my favorite genre - but if we’re at least catchy it could be enjoyable. New wave electronic pop bores me. It’s fine, I have heard worse on this list of records to listen to before I die.
Frank Zappa
3/5
Another “genius” that I don’t think I will get. I actually got this. I liked it. Kinda blusieish. Will the pimp had great guitar work. Pleasantly surprised here. This is what I am here for. Hit the wrong button. This is three stars.
Keith Jarrett
4/5
This was very enjoyable - what a talent. And to read that this is essentially improvised is crazy to me. I need to research that more. 4 stars would listen again. Very pleasant.
Coldcut
3/5
Talk about music not matching album artwork or artist name. Another one I had to listen to on YouTube. Started out as 80s disco inspired dance music. Took a turn but was expecting it to be a bit more trippy - it’s pretty straight ahead stuff. Not my favorite genre ever but it’s fine. Certainly not bad.
Einstürzende Neubauten
1/5
Ok I have no idea what this is supposed to be. Before I bash it - I want to make sure this is not supposed to be some sort of tribute to any horrific event from the past. I get them trying to do something different but still it’s trash. Want to give it 1 star but I hate trashing creativity. I’ll give it a 2. Nope slept on it. 1 star
Buck Owens
3/5
Ah potentially the originator of wham bam thank you ma’am - worth the listen to find this out. Vintage country. I didn’t mind it actually.
Adele
5/5
I’m a sucker for Adele - love her voice. Specifically on Someone Like You. Actually saw her live at MSG. Was slightly disappointed she didn’t try the original “don’t forget me I beg” line in the original pitch/key/tone whatever the proper term is. I really like this album and yes - it’s worthy of 5 stars. Didn’t realize Rick Rubin produced.
Garbage
4/5
Never gave these guys a chance and I really enjoyed this record. I expected it to be dark, monotone, boring. Had some catchy stuff, parts I wanted to listen to again. Not an average record - I’ll give it a four.
Mercury Rev
3/5
Very British poppy stuff. Nothing very original here. Nothing very bad.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
3/5
Classic album but I never loved these guys. Always bored me. Listening to this probed to be no different. Bo-ring.
Brian Eno
2/5
Not even really for airports. This is just tones and sounds. Got nothing from this except the desire to sleep - which isn’t all that bad. Still got to give it a 2 - not bad, it’s just not music.
Jeff Buckley
4/5
I really enjoyed this one. I’ve heard the name, never knew the music, never knew he died. Tragic accidental drowning. Based on this as his only release, I’m betting he could have been huge. Great stuff. Second listen was even better. Easy 4 stars, considered giving it 5.
Cocteau Twins
3/5
Not for me. Really boring pop. I don’t know why anyone would need to hear this seems basic to me.
Public Image Ltd.
3/5
As the debut from them I expected it to be more raw and it was. Was never drawn to the British punk scene.
The Doors
5/5
This is five stars - not so much because it’s banger after banger, but because yes everyone should hear this record. Original, creative and Jim Morrison is a legend. As much as people critique his lyrics as childish doesn’t make it any less awesome. One of the best album closers ever.
The Smiths
3/5
Was interested to hear this and research them - was Morressy part of the smiths? Where did they start, how many records etc. Well I don’t really care. Boring record, not my favorite production. Second half was certainly better. Not sure why I see this record on so many best of lists. I had higher expectations.
Nirvana
3/5
Hot take - most overrated band ever. No denying importance, place in history etc but they were right place right time killing off metal blah blah blah. But aside from a few songs they are boring.
Jack White
4/5
Very surprised to see Jack White solo stuff on here. This dude just gets rock and roll music. Interesting stuff. Cool tone on his solos. Like this dude.
Giant Sand
3/5
This was interesting - very mellow and pleasant to listen to. Didn’t motivate me to learn anything more. Good record glad I listened.
New Order
4/5
This was a much better album than I expected it to be. I actually really enjoyed it. I am surprised and may even go so far as to listen to more of these guys. Great stuff.
Steely Dan
4/5
More yacht rock. Great stuff really enjoyed it. Great songwriting great musicianship. It will always be “are you reeling in the yeast” to me though.
The Beach Boys
4/5
Never tonight I’d like this whole collection. Great stuff. Took me a long time to appreciate this stuff. The melodies and harmonies are great. I’m a sucker for the song god only knows.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Yeah this was fine. I didn’t love her though.
The White Stripes
4/5
Maybe my least favorite from them - seem very experimental lots of xylophones and other interesting instruments. Still better than a lot of trash in this list. Favorite is as ugly as I seem. Jack white is awesome.
Devendra Banhart
3/5
More folk. Very eclectic we’ll say. Not my bag.
The Kinks
3/5
Kinks are a classic. Never heard any of these tracks. Take that back I know sunny afternoon. Seems pretty typical for the mid sixties. I’m sure there is some importance here but not interested enough to research. Also I’m not listening to the bonus tracks. So there.
Beck
3/5
Nothing screams 90s louder than Beck. Never got into him.
Pink Floyd
5/5
Duh, of course. Timing of this one is good. Going to see David Gilmour this weekend. He’s still got it.
Joni Mitchell
4/5
This seemed like a much more diverse record than the last Joni Mitchell listen. I liked this a lot more. So much so that I think I will give this one 4 stars. Her voice was much more pleasing to me on this record as well. Perhaps I was in a shit mood last time lol.
Astrud Gilberto
3/5
Listened to Joni Mitchell right into this. Tone of voice was very similar. I kinda liked this in a nostalgic way. Not that I heard it before but it felt so 60s. Interesting listen.
Elvis Presley
4/5
Elvis is great. No denying. I enjoyed this.
Rage Against The Machine
5/5
This record was huge in college for me. Talented dude just hate the politics. I don’t love politics mixed with my music I’m trying enjoy. I can look past it though as audio only. Once I watch a performance I’m turned off. That all said this record is awesome - different from anything else out at the time. For that it’s close to five stars. Actually I can look past the lyrics it is 5 stars.
Iron Maiden
5/5
One of my favorites ever. This record changed things for me. Just saw them live this weekend - 42 years after this record was released. They are still amazing - best live band ever and I’m not sure this is their best album. Easiest 5 star rating so far. No brainer.
Air
4/5
First soundtrack generated by this list I think. Surprised there are not more. Very atmospheric - while listening I was wondering what was happening in the movie at the time. Kinda want to see it now. This is definitely more than just moods and tones. I liked this. Never heard of the composers before - I think I’ll look them up.
Minor Threat
3/5
Yep what you’d expect from a hardcore band although I will say it was a little more elaborate than I would expect - like actual structure, cool bass lines, arrangements. Oddly enough this band showed up as a post on my instagram account and I was able to get a little of their background. Apparently one of the first DIY type bands, self promotion etc. Pretty cool stuff.
Spiritualized
3/5
Pleasantly surprised here. Lots to like, but yes plenty of monotony. There were actual melodies, harmonies and structure. Good stuff.
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
I think this is their classic album - go your own way is a fucking great song. As great as that song is don’t stop thinking about tomorrow is so corny - I hate it. I’m sure this gets tons of 5s, I’ll give it a 4. Alsways said the songs Stevie is featured in are the best. Side note I hate the two nuts hanging from Mic’s midsection.
Neil Young
4/5
Something about Neil young’s music draws me in. Distinctive voice, great melodies, meaningful lyrics. I like this a lot.
Bobby Womack
3/5
Standard 80s jazzy bluesy pop. Not interesting to me.
The Monkees
3/5
Spotify has this album with about 36 songs - I looked it up and only listened to what was on the original release. I was not familiar with any of these songs but it was pretty good actually. Much deeper band than what I had thought given the whole Davey Jones thing and tv show and all. I’m pretty sure I read these guys had Jimi Hendrix open for them before he hit it big. What a terrible album cover.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Not as upbeat as the last Costello record. I mean this was fine some cool stuff here. Nothing notable enough to go back to. I kinda liked it.
David Bowie
4/5
It’s about to be writ again - Bowie is awesome. Life on mars to me is such a beautiful song. Looking forward to listening to the lesser known tracks - hopefully not just filler. Great stuff. Queen Bitch is a great tune. Bowie is awesome. Easy 4 not sure about a 5. Nope this is a 4 - sorry David.
Curtis Mayfield
3/5
Fun listen. Exactly what you would expect. Classic stuff. Three stars.
Doves
3/5
This was interesting. I kinda liked it actually. Nothing groundbreaking but pleasant enough.
Stereo MC's
3/5
Never heard of these guys or any of the songs from this record. Came out in 1992 and it sounds like maybe they were at the forefront of this early 90s alternative dance type music. It’s fine. Didn’t move me.
Can
3/5
This was interesting but not great. This is a listen to it 18 times for it to click. Not overly concerned about it clicking. Considering it’s Thanksgiving it’ll get three stars. You are welcome Can.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Never thought I’d like Bob Dylan. I like this one too. I gotta listen to him more often.
ABBA
3/5
Yes dancing queen is a classic, I knew the song Fernando, but this album is just corny. One great song the rest is a whole lotta meh.
Songhoy Blues
3/5
Mabey I’m overly cynical here today but this just felt gimmicky. Interesting concept of having African dudes playing blues music but I just didn’t buy it. Good effort and maybe I’m wrong. Side note this seems like it is one of the most current records I have had to listen to on this list.
Pixies
4/5
Like the last pixies record I had high hopes and wasn’t disappointed. Interesting album would listen again. Just the right mix of weird and melody.
Elton John
4/5
If this had one or two more recognizable songs it would be a 5. I liked this. Elton John is great and I really regret not going to see him during his final tour. Got a feeling there will be more Elton John on this list.
Depeche Mode
4/5
My wife loves these guys - I know a couple of the hits. I liked this. Dark moody. I’d like to see them live.
Joy Division
3/5
This is not what I expected from joy division. This was guitars and bass and drums. Didn’t hear a ton of poppy synths. Maybe that comes later with them. Dark, kind of whiny. It’s fine, don’t hate.
The Thrills
4/5
Never heard of these guys and This is not what I was expecting. 60s-70s sometimes beach boys-y vibe. Great vocal harmonies and really well done. All I kept thinking was they put time and effort into this record. I like it a lot. I’ll actually listen again. Kind of record if you play in the background people will ask who is this. Great record.
3/5
More background restaurant music. Didn’t feel like anything more than that.
JAY Z
4/5
Hmm, this record came about a year after allegedly raping a 13 year old with puff daddy. I don’t really want to listen to this. Even before the allegation came out I was never a fan. I’ll listen though. Hate to admit it. This is a 4. I liked it.
MGMT
4/5
Very cool record. I really liked it. Different and fresh. Lots of catchy stuff on here.
U2
4/5
U2 is a band that I kind of like and kind of don’t like. I would have liked to have seen them live though. That said they were huge and this album got them big. Sunday Bloody Sunday video on mtv of them performing at red rocks is a classic.
CHIC
3/5
I didn’t realize I needed to hear another chic album. It’s good though. Well written talented musicians. Well produced. I’d give it 3,5 but gonna round down. Sorry.
Emmylou Harris
3/5
I thought emmylou was a country lady from the 50-60s. Surprised to see this was released in 2000. It’s fine not inspired enough to look her up at all. She sounded like Susanna Hoffs from the bangles at times. It was boring.
De La Soul
3/5
Wanted to like it. I didn’t really. I. Fact it was super corny with all the between song questions.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Leonard Cohen - another guy I heard of often but know nothing about. Is he a broadway show writer? Or is he just a folk singer? Why is Dustin Hoffmans picture on the cover? Ok he is like a cross between Bob Dylan and Nick Drake. I like it. Actually he may have been on this list already. Must not have left an impression. Update confirmed first time on this list. Three stars. Final answer.
David Bowie
4/5
It’s Bowie, it’s good. Enjoyed the deep cuts. That said feels like too much Bowie on this list.
Robert Wyatt
2/5
Sorry this is trash. Nothing enjoyable about this at all. Not rock bottom on this list but came close. I’ll still give it a two as opposed to a 1. At least it sounded like he tried.
Various Artists
3/5
Yay. I love a Christmas album on Christmas. That said I’d have preferred Elvis or frank Sinatra.
The Incredible String Band
3/5
About what I expected. Boring. Not for me. Giving this a three is kind of disrespectful to the other threes out there but it’s not terrible enough for a 2. I need to rethink my rating system.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
This was fine. Not blown away. I really don’t have much to say about this accept based on song credits Simon was the bread winner in this relationship.
Beastie Boys
4/5
This was another good beastie boys record. Dust brothers produced I always thought Rick Rubin did all beastie boys records. I’m going give this 4. That maybe generous but that’s ok.
The Boo Radleys
3/5
No idea what to expect here. Only indication of what to expect is that it’s released in early 90s. The song Barney was quite good. Good little record.
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
3/5
80s cheese. Dreamin was especially cheesy.
Ian Dury
3/5
I went to high school with a kid named Vinny r. And he was a strange dude. I think he would have loved this record. This dude sounds odd. Eccentric, off beat whatever you want to call it. But it does have some good grooves. Not terrible at all. But not good either. It’s fine.
U2
5/5
Another college staple. U2 was huge in high school and this record was a big departure from those earlier records. I loved this though and it’s probably my favorite from them. Still never seen these guys live - I think I’ll still have a chance. That said everything after this record is complete trash. Totally overrated. After listening in its entirety for the first time in years I can say the pacing of this record is outstanding. Great flow. This album is a 5. Great stuff.
Rush
5/5
Finally a Rush record and this one is easy. 5 stars can’t wait to listen to this gem as a whole collection again. Alex Lifeson is probably one of the most under appreciated guitar players. Love this record. Love this band. Wish I saw them live more than I did.
Beck
4/5
Not looking forward to this one. Well I am pleasantly surprised. Very chill enjoyed it and would listen again. When I think of Beck it’s just that song loser and I don’t like that song. This was kind of awesome. I’m intrigued.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Classic record - song that I totally forgot about and love is Dead Flowers. I slept on the stones for too long - as noted earlier glad I got to see them live. Giving a 4 - not a 5 but I suppose good be if I gave this multiple spins and gave deep cuts a chance.
Eagles
3/5
I don’t know if I like or dislike the eagles. The one thing I do know is that they bore me. Witchy Woman is a terrible song. I hate that. I need to hear more of them, i do want to see them live. I think the dude from big Lebowski influenced me into not liking them.
Solomon Burke
3/5
Back half felt a little ahead of its time. Good soul singing rock and rolling record. Nice listen. Never heard of this guy or any of the songs.
Pretenders
4/5
This was good. I was impressed. Had some attitude. Up the neck was my favorite song. Brass in pocket was the most polished song no wonder it was the single. I’ll give it a 4, it was better than a lot of the threes I’d given out recently.
The Mamas & The Papas
3/5
I appreciate this word being in this list. Monday Monday and California dreaming are classics - didn’t realize the ramones covered them with do ya wanna dance. Also many references to them in once upon a time in Hollywood. Great stuff. Also it should be noted that momma cass did not choke on a ham sandwich.
Metallica
3/5
Very surprised to see this on the list. I remember when it came out and not listening to it very often. And now I remember why. It’s just not good at all. Watered down overproduced directionless. I get why you try but this gimmick didn’t work. Just so random. Took away all the intensity of the music. I love Metallica. This was a swing and a miss. I’ll stil give it 3 stars and I appreciate them pushing boundaries blah blah blah.
Beyoncé
3/5
Not looking forward to this one. Well it’s not what I expected, not saying I liked it but it felt familiar. It is not as poppy ask would have expected. I know now, I think i may or may not have heard many of these songs at a strip club. It’s fine - the girl can sing.
The Specials
3/5
Yep late 70s early 80s ska/reggae music. It’s fine and this genre hasn’t been represented yet so I appreciate its presence on this list. No need to go back to this but I can see a song or two being played summer time day drinking possibly.
Johnny Cash
3/5
I had to double check to make sure this wasn’t a duplicate. Another live prison recording. It’s exactly the same as the San Quentin just have different words. I get it but it’s not for me.
All right.
Willie Nelson
4/5
I was surprised how much I liked this record. I am hungover and maybe that played a role in my feelings. This was very chill and I even listened to it a second time. Lots of cover songs - great stuff.
Primal Scream
3/5
I didn’t know what to expect and it was fine. Admittedly I was preoccupied with work and suck while listening but what I bought didn’t interest me enough to listen again. I think a theee is warranted here.
Fela Kuti
3/5
When I saw this pop up I swore it was the second album from him on the list. Now I remember how I heard of him - he was in the rrhof ticket at the same time as Iron Maiden. Anyway I get the talent here. All good glad I listened.
Van Morrison
3/5
Nice listen but never found anything outstanding about van Morrison. Unique voice, some catchy tunes. He is such a middle of the road artist. No one hates him, and I don’t think he’s anyone’s favorite. If his song comes on that’s great if not I would never miss it. This album was nice to listen to. Enjoyed it but nothing new for me.
George Jones
3/5
Feel like this guy is one of the top 5 all timers. Must have been a legendary drinker. Typical sad country western songs but not overly twangy which I made it pleasant.
4/5
I didn’t know what to expect here. Based on cover and first notes thought it was some modern synth stings piece. 80s pop and I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it. Sounded great, I really enjoyed listening to the bass player. Feels like this would have been a great Duran Duran album. A shocking 4 stars from me - great stuff.
John Lennon
3/5
I cringed when I saw this pop up as the next record. Thankfully there was no yoko on here. Only references to her in lyrics. I don’t know anything about her just have seen some of her shrieky singing while watching reels. This was fine, nothing groundbreaking. Nice enough listen but didn’t “wow” me. Three average stars.
Linkin Park
4/5
I always thought these guys were overrated. I know the “hits” but was glad to listen to the full collection. Nu Metal that were as big as Metallica at one point. That’s when I was kinda lost on Metallica. But this was better than I expected. I fully expected to give an average 3 stars but I can see rounding up here. Sad story about lead vocalist Chester.
Frank Sinatra
5/5
Loved it - in fact I let Spotify play frank sinatra all day. You can’t not enjoy this music. I don’t care who you are.
Elvis Costello
3/5
This is kinda dumb. A third Elvis Costello record? Not pumped for this one. Well I was wrong. Different from the others and had a great sound to it. I wouldn’t mind listening to this one again. Nice ballads, some upbeat, some chill some attitude. I think most surprised by his voice I liked it this time around more than I thought. Only checked a couple of song credits and there were other writers - not sure if they covers or he don’t write anything. Listened again a little closer. It’s fine. Three stars.
Sepultura
4/5
Noice. I know this one! Can’t wait to listen. Surprised to see this here. I know the other sepultura records better than this one so I’m curious. You can definitely hear the progression to the almost nu metal soulfly sound. Production is so much better. Incorporates South American rhythms into it. Love it. This is a powerful angry metal record. More importantly it’s a great metal record at a time when metal was dying. Legends for keeping it going during the grunge hype. Side note last 12 minutes was a waste.
Tim Buckley
3/5
Don’t realize this was Jeff Buckleys father. Nothing “happy” about this record - the vibe was down aside from Gypsy woman which was like Santana. Nothing grabbed me. It was fine and I’m sure he was great but more made me more bored than anything. Three completely average stars.
Portishead
3/5
I had no idea what to expect here. 90s lady singing fairly boring songs. I think I liked one A don’t remember the name of it and I will never go back to this record. Not because it’s bad just uneventful.
Marty Robbins
4/5
I liked this way more than I expected. Reminded me of a Quentin Tarantino movie. Looking at the cover it was exactly what I expected. Great storytelling, pleasant melodies - I really liked the vibe surprisingly. I’m giving this 4 stars sorry not sorry.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Was never a huge Springsteen fan but this is infinitely better than the first record I heard from him on this list. I have to assume this is regarded as his best. That said his singing gets old while I don’t mind it I can see how people think the lyrics and down and out stories are corny. Still this is 4 easy stars. Classic.
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
Don’t know anything about them - I am guessing emoish alternative and winey. Getting smashing pumpkin vibes early. Now I know why I don’t know anything about them - they are just not that good. I’ll give them three stars because they tried but some of the songs just sounded like mud.
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
3/5
A ridiculously 80s record. Some parts John Hughes movie, some parts emo woe is me, some parts tones and moods. But somehow it all sounds the same. Not my bag baby. Still three stars it’s not a bad record.
Violent Femmes
3/5
Add it up and blister are classics. These guys were underground yet popular when I was in high school. I never really got it - I was into metal (still am). But the bass lines in this record are fun to listen to. Not sure if I can round this up to 4. Yeah, keeping at at three but it’s really a 3.5
Yes
3/5
This was what I expected from yes. Weird. Proggy. Wouldn’t listen to this again. Super talented dudes though.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
A third Elvis Costello is just dumb. No offense to Mr. Costello. Must be filler for this list. Without even hearing this I bet I can think of a thousand other records that deserve to be listened to. I listened and there were a couple good tunes but I didn’t need to hear this - I don’t think the Costello catalogue is so diverse or essential that this needs to be here. Stones, Beatles, Bowie yes they deserve multiple listings. My mistake. This is the freaking fourth Elvis Costello record. List lost some credibility.
Erykah Badu
3/5
Never heard of this. Wanted to like it more but alas, just wasn’t great. Got better towards the end but she doesn’t have a great voice. This album is definitely a vibe and I just wasn’t getting it today. Maybe another time but I won’t come back to this.
James Taylor
3/5
Sleepy album of course we know fire and rain. Oh Susanna was corny. It’s fine and exactly what I expected. Three plain vanilla stars.
Prince
5/5
This is a sick album. Loved it. Never saw the movie and don’t ever care to. I wonder if it was supposed to be good. When doves cry is one of my favorite pop songs ever. Price was just good at everything he did although not sure about his acting. He can certainly play guitar, sing, dance and command an audience. Being bold and giving 5. Loved it.
Talking Heads
4/5
This was pretty awesome. Psycho killer is a classic but there was other really cool stuff on here too. Felt fresher than a record from 1977.
Antony and the Johnsons
3/5
No idea what to expect here. Well the music and vibe of it was great. I couldn’t take the voice. Excessive vibrato and it was like watching what’s that it’s Pat. Too distracting. Still a three.
Daft Punk
3/5
Based on get lucky I was hoping for a grove based album with some melodies. Not the case. Dance track instrumentals. Couple of fun parts not what I wanted. Fine record though.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
I never seem to get sick of the stones. Mother’s little helper cracks me up. Under my thumb is just an awesome rock and roll song. I’ll take rolling stones over Beatles all day every day. Going home sounds like the doors. Great stuff. Out of time is such a 60s vibe - probably my favorite of this bunch.
Isaac Hayes
3/5
I get this being here and I had hoped to like it more but didn’t do anything for me. It’s a fine record but won’t listen again.
Duke Ellington
4/5
Glad to listen to this. Felt like a naked gun soundtrack. Nice to actually hear some sort of structure but again not a heck of a lot of melodies. At least it didn’t sound like practice. Appreciation for this music came from watching whiplash. This is classic essential music.
Peter Gabriel
4/5
Hard to listen to the hits from this album without thinking for the videos he put out. Don’t give up with Kate bush is great. In your eyes is just a beautiful song. I paid particular attention to the voice this listen and was kind of blown away. He has a really long and great career but I can’t think of much that he did besides this album and shock the monkey.
Radiohead
3/5
I just don’t get these guys. I try and try and try. Lame. It’s still three stars but I think Radiohead is one of the most overrated bands in music history.
Radiohead
4/5
Ok this list is fucking with me now. Radiohead on back to back days just as I called them probably the most overrated band ever. At least I heard of this record. This was definatley the best one yet. I’d consider giving it a 4 and yes I will. It’s good stuff.
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
This rap doesn’t age well to me. Walk this way was creative but overall just feels sooooo basic. Innovators for sure but can’t get pumped up from a run dmc song these days.
Amy Winehouse
4/5
What a talent she was. I really enjoyed this was well as a lot of the songs Spotify played after the album was over. Best way to describe it was just “cool.” I’d go back to this and want to back in black (I think that’s what it’s called) again.
Kings of Leon
3/5
Always thought these guys were lame. Kinda proved right. Terrible voice. Bad production. Sex on fire the supposed hit is boring. I thought singing about teenage girls was frowned upon in the 2000s. This album was not something I had to hear. It’s three. Not bad just meh.
Machito
3/5
1957 release - at least I know it will not be a long listen. This is a genre I was supposed to hear before I died. There is nothing this album can do to separate itself from any other within the genre. I’ll I kept thinking about was the movie very bad things and also the part in godfather 2 when they were in Cuba. Soundtrack material. It’s good stuff but nothing I can see ever voluntarily putting on again.
Ella Fitzgerald
3/5
Beautiful voice familiar broadway songs - this is nice for 45 minutes. I tried to get through the three hours but come on. She’s a legend but enough is enough.
The Killers
4/5
Didn’t realize this was a debut album. Killers is a guilty pleasure, Mr bright side is an absolute banger and it’s never a bad time to hear that song. Works in any setting. That’s all said. Feels like they peaked on this record. All downhill from there. All that said, it’s still just a 4.
Herbie Hancock
3/5
Good stuff. Nothing to really come back to but I always enjoy some good 70s funk.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
It’s like Elvis Costello is the greatest musical genius of every generation according to this list. Enough is enough. Peace love and understanding is a good tune. Three average stars.
Van Morrison
3/5
Nothing here made me say wow. Very jazzy. His voice so unique - just doesn’t work for me sometimes. Other times it does. This is average.
Primal Scream
3/5
Wanted to like it but it’s lame. Not two stars lame just boring and emotionless. Still, this is an insult the other three star reviews I have given. This is why we need half stars in the rating system. Manufactured, sound effects 90s rave music that didn’t have its coffee in the morning.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
These guys are awesome. I will say that this is one of those greatest hits those bands - don’t care about individual albums, give me the bangers. If it was greatest hits I may say 5 stars. This is probably give three. CCR isn’t one of those let’s check out the progression of this bank from album to album.
Arcade Fire
3/5
I expected a lot more from this record. I was a little disappointed. I wanted to love it. That said it’s three stars. It was fine.
Tricky
3/5
This was dissapointing. Well not dissaponted like I expected something good. More on thought I liked the 90s. This was the same monotone sampling bullshit emotionless crap. I’m making the case for at least half stars again. This isn’t three stars but it’s certainly not 2 stars. I have to give three but this isn’t anything I would recommend to anyone at all.
The Auteurs
3/5
This was this Brit pop it’s sounded like. I listened to it on a plane and never slept so good. I technically listened but don’t remember. It was boring.
Bob Dylan
4/5
The more I hear the more I love. This dude is a fucking bad ass. Love it. But not 5 stars love it. 4 folky stars.
Al Green
4/5
Let’s stay together always reminds me of pulp fiction. Great voice , great songs. I’ll give this 4 stars. I listened to this in the balcony in Turks and Caicos. That place makes everything good I suppose.
The White Stripes
4/5
As I said before - Jack White just gets rock and roll. Makes things sound so easy. This album is just so raw. The drumming is so simple but so unique. Great band. Great album, but I prefer the more polished sound they got later.
Moby Grape
3/5
Never heard of this before but automatically know what it will sound like. This is what im here for. I’ll never go back to this but is cool. It’s Moby Grape. I even listened to the bonus tracks. Now again. I need half stars. This isn’t a four. But it’s better than some of the threes. I have to give this a three.
Stan Getz
4/5
This was a very, very pleasant jazz album to listen to. The Latin flare made it that much better. Chill, thought out and interesting. Not haphazard and random. Feeling generous and giving 4 stars.
Tito Puente
3/5
More Latin flare - this sounds like the soundtrack to the movie the chef with John favereau. I would never ever listen to this for enjoyment only own. Now a few drinks, in Miami at a club and I can start salsaing. Easy dance for old white dudes to do. Three steps forward, three steps back move your arms slowly like you’re almost running. Terrible cover for this record. Three stars.
Foo Fighters
4/5
Totally get why this record is on this list and it 100 percent belongs given the history of nirvana and on the heels of Cobains suicide. This is raw, and I always thought it was so cool that Groel played every instrument. The guy gets music, he loves metal and writes really catchy songs. Using my best Borat impersonation, “I like!”
N.W.A.
4/5
Ok I was surprised here. This was awesome. Blew away public enemy for my money. I’d listen again. Funny how Dre and ice cube are like mainstream and live off the persona now. I liked this. A lot. Not 5 stars but easy eazy 4.
Suzanne Vega
3/5
This was a very pleasant record to listen to. Nothing great by way of melodies or voice but it felt a little ahead of its time and feels like a current release. That has to account for something. No stand out tracks so I will give it a three but this could have been a 3.5. I will also note I find her voice very soothing and relaxing. Kind of music I can mediate or zone out to.
Scott Walker
3/5
More music I would expect to hear on a Quentin Tarantino movie soundtrack. Overly dramatic and oozes late 60s.
Gil Scott-Heron
3/5
Annoying one as I had to listen on YouTube. This seems like it was important for race and all that. Music is fine the last track was like poetry reading but maybe early for of rapping. Again it’s fine.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
More great Neil Young. Powderfinger is my favorite here. Great stuff, nice mix of folk and rock and roll. 4 easy stars.
Beastie Boys
3/5
Who would have thought that when this came out in the mid 80s they would have long careers. There are so many annoying songs on this, namely girls, fight for your right among others. But Paul Revere is awesome and the sampling was smart to draw kids in. This is a 3.5. Can’t give it a 4, so I’ll give a three - but this is a 3.5.
The Stooges
3/5
This was worth listening too. Super raw. Can see how they are pioneers of the punk movement. Cool stuff. We will fall was not needed to be that bloated. Three stars.
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
Boring. That about sums it up. Not bad. Just boring. I guess this is an influence on emo stuff? I will say I have a hankering to listen to some my chemical romance now.
Missy Elliott
3/5
Hmm. It terrible. I was thinking to myself give me this over Beyoncé album anytime. Then Beyoncé had a feature. Highlight was the Paul revere sample, which oddly enough was two albums ago. Great song. Again not terrible, kinda of enjoyed it.
Bob Dylan
4/5
Bob Dylan again. At first a slight eye roll then remembered i have been thoroughly enjoying his catalog. Looking forward to it. More great stuff. Dude is awesome. Can’t believe I slept on this guy. Gotta watch the movie this weekend.
Public Enemy
4/5
I liked this a lot more than fear of a black planet. This was fun. Catchy. Good stuff. Flavor flav yeahhhhh booooyyyyy gets old fast though. That said I’ll give this 4 stars.
Syd Barrett
3/5
This was interesting. I was expecting garbled nonsense but this was pretty easy to listen to - got a bit wacky towards the end but there were some touching lyrics and this wasn’t bad at all. David Gilmore took Pink Floyd to new heights but Sid did write astronmy domine. Every Floyd fan should listen to this Barrett record.
The Mars Volta
3/5
These guys semed to linger in my mind as a band needing to listen to. References in movies and some moderate success in early 2000s but the voice killed me. High pitched howling is what thought but it wasn’t bad. Not the kind of record you will click with on first listen. It was interesting but not something I would go back to on my own.
G. Love & Special Sauce
3/5
The was unexpectedly pleasant. I really liked the vibe. Never heard of these guys or any of the songs. Good daydrinking background music I may listen again. Not 4 stars tough.
Louis Prima
4/5
This was awesome. Great playing. High energy. Sounded like they had fun making it. Little nuances like hearing the band leader all fired up in the deep background. Glad to have heard this. 4 stars for sure.
Earth, Wind & Fire
4/5
This was great. Funky, catchy and still holds up. In going to round this one up to four stars. Just a solid record with songs I recognized. Great musicianship.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
I think people sleep on this record. Out on the tiles, celebration day and tangerine are some of my favorites. Can’t wait to listen to this again - I already know it’s a 4. Let’s give John Paul Jones his due - feels like he is the forgotten member of led zep but what a talent he is.
The Smiths
3/5
This was much more upbeat than I had expected it to be. Little whiny but I actually kind of enjoyed it. Solid three for a first listen. Can believe how many listeners they have on Spotify. Almost 18 million. Is the is the bank morrisey came from. I suppose I don’t really care.
Everything But The Girl
3/5
This was very generic sounded like Sade singing over an electronic drum track. This did not sound influential or moving at all. It was fine but is an insult to other three star rated records here.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Holy shit. It must be his complete catalog on this list. More quirky uptempo stuff. I have nothing against Elvis Costello except the fact that 1/3 of the way through this list he is the most repeated artist. Another three star review. Blah blah blah.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
In all fairness to Mr Costello there seems to by a shit ton of Rolling Stones here. Difference here is I like it. So much material from this band I can’t believe I used to think they were overrated. They have overtaken the who on my list of British rock royalty. Great record
Derek & The Dominos
4/5
Eric Clapton bores me but this one has two of his best in Layla and bell bottom blues. Key to the highway is a gem I discovered here and I loved that one. Very bluesy record - it’s cool and all just production wise sounds like shit. Not sure if this is an expanded version but a refined longer than an hour released in 1970 seems unique. I think I’m rounding up to 4 stars here. Good stuff
Kraftwerk
3/5
This has to be the band that was inspiration for “autobahn”. The fake band the nihilists were in from The Big Lebowski. Anyway this seemed ahead of its time - not even sure what you call this, electric eurotrash or what - it was more than just tones and sounds. Respect it, don’t love it but don’t hate it.
Country Joe & The Fish
3/5
Started out better than I had expected. Mix of psychedelic and hillbilly. Definitely interesting never heard of these guys before. So very 60s.Martha Lorraine is the best from this record for my money.
Adele
4/5
Yes I’m a still a sucker for Adele’s voice. I think she is an amazing talent. Some of her music is super corny and downright annoying but just for her voice she’s an automatic 4 stars. I think the other record is better maybe? Not sure.
Sex Pistols
4/5
This is what I am here for. Classic record that I know a couple of singles but would never dive in on my own. This was smarter and more polished than I expected it to be. I quite enjoyed it. I am guessing this is the only really worthwhile release they ever put out. But it’s pretty freaking awesome.
Beatles
4/5
Nice another one that I have been wanting to listen to. I know I should like the Beatles but I just can’t get into them. I’m guessing this is the record they started experimenting with hallucinogens? Lot of respect for them, the creativity, originality and i know this band changed a lot of people’s lives. Just doesn’t hit me like I think it should. I still give it 4 stars.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Pretty much what I expected. Dark, raspy “vocals”, pretty much talking. But a nice listen nonetheless. Interesting lyrics, I would actually listen again. I’ll stick with three stars though.
Liz Phair
3/5
This was disappointing. Nothing struck me as interesting. Couple of songs kinda rocked but not impressed. Expected more. Perhaps it’s the “shocking” lyrics that got her noticed as well as the nipple on the cover. So edgy.
Prince
4/5
Super catchy pop record. But man the songs were long. This guy is super talented and I thought this was his debut. This could have been 5 stars if it showcased more of his guitar playing skills.
Frank Ocean
3/5
I really tried to get into this one. Had a lot of good parts but nothing took hold as a whole. Always thought he was a rapper but this is more r and b. Maybe other records of his are better.
The Louvin Brothers
3/5
Not much to say here. It is exactly what you would expect. Satan fearing bible thumping hillbilly country. Not a bad thing just not my thing.
Elis Regina
3/5
Was expecting the music to have a much heavier taste of Latin influences but this was straight up smooth jazz basically. Had a hunch it was Portuguese singing and didn’t know this lady was so huge in Brazil. Quality voice and writes songs as well. Good listen.
Baaba Maal
3/5
At least he second one from this dude. I’ll listen but likely won’t pay much attention. There is no connection to this at all really. All talented people and all that. Just can’t relate at all.
Nas
4/5
I liked this a lot. Actually listened to it a couple of times. For the mid 90s this one felt more modern, not angry or corny like most -early 90 hip hop/rap. I’ll give it a 4. Listening to this made me go back to maad city by Kendrick. That one is awesome.
Arcade Fire
3/5
Another one I expected more from but this probably requires multiple spins. Rebellion is an awesome song and the vibe of the song certainly fits the title. Ultimately this is indi, hipster, I like it cause no one else does type music.
Meat Puppets
3/5
Now I know where I heard of these guys. For some reason was confusing them with screaming trees. Nirvana had covered them for the unplugged album. Interesting music. Unlike things at the time. Underground, melodies to be found. Not paying so much attention to the lyrics. I won’t listen again. Three stars.
The Fall
3/5
For this one I forgot to write as I listened cause I was driving. I can’t really remember it at all. Indie generic not interesting I suppose. In one ear out the other. I do know it wasn’t bad. I hate that I give these completely average things the same three stars I give things that actually are pretty good.
Jurassic 5
4/5
See this is where I get aggravated. I liked this - funky, modern, catchy genre hoping rap. All great things. But it’s not a 4 star record and crushes a lot of the stuff that I’ve been giving threes to. This is 3.5. You know what, fuck it. 4 stars!!!!
Janelle Monáe
3/5
This was more diverse than I expected. Lots of variety on here but doesn’t seem like she really went anywhere mainstream. R and b, rap, funk, soul, pop nice voice but kinda average for my taste.
Eminem
3/5
I like some of Eminem’s songs and he opened the rap world up in the early 2000s. It this record did nothing for me. Felt like over the top lyrics just to create controversy. A talent for sure but this one was pretty average for me.
Beatles
5/5
Ah I’ve been waiting for this. Looking forward to listening despite the fact the previous Beatles records I listened to did nothing to change the fact that they really do nothing for me. Revolution 9 was a waste of 8 minutes. That all said I really dug this one. Like really dug it. Can I say I understand their brilliance now? No. Loads of great songs and the songwriting spoke to me this time. Based on my enjoyment and the legacy, this is 5 stars. Amazing it’s sandwiched between two other legendary records.
John Grant
4/5
This was a really great record. Started off a bit slow but as we hit the midway point I found myself looking up lyrics, adding songs to playlists and repeating tracks. Really enjoyed it, interesting lyrics, nice melodies, great mix of instruments. Quality stuff - loved it.
Red Snapper
3/5
This was as average as it comes blah blah blah late 90s early 2000s dance music. One song talked about clits. Stupid. But. It two stars bad. Just dumb that this is considered must listen music. Dumb.
Green Day
4/5
Initially turned off when I saw this I’m sick of their politics blah blah blah. But it’s a solid record with catchy songs. I liked it. It’s 4 stars. Pop punk rock.
Thelonious Monk
4/5
This seemed like a simpler jazz record to enjoy. Was bluesy, catchy just straight up enjoyable. Outstanding musicianship. I liked this a lot. Fun to listen to.
The Sugarcubes
3/5
New wave reminded me of souse and the banshees or something. Not that I even know their music. Background listen for me nothing here to get into.
Sugar
3/5
Never heard of this but went in guessing some kind of alternative music. Early 90s alternative rock. And this album actually kinda rocked. Good songs - there was one that just didn’t fit in at all with the rest of the record. It was called if in any change your mind. After listening to record I still have no idea where they from. If I had to guess I’d say somewhere in the uk. I listed to a lot of radio in the early 90s and this fits in with anything else that was being played. Yay I was right. Founder of band was bob mould from husker duu. I heard of him.
The Beach Boys
4/5
Yep it’s exactly what you would expect. Seems to me this album generator is not completely random considering this popped up the morning after Brian Wilson’s death. I guess I’ll give it 4 stars but wasn’t that awesome. But killed a lot of the other threes I have given.
The Band
3/5
I don’t know. This is a pretty overrated record I’d guess. Doesn’t do anything for me. Take a load off fanny is probably the biggest hit here and I really dislike that song. I know this is Robbie Robertson but I still don’t know what he’s all about. Not sure I care.
The Cure
4/5
I think this is the third cure record and by far the best on the list so far. Pictures of you and love song and just flat out great great songs. I am inclined to give this a 4 because I’ve been giving out many threes. Does anyone even give a shit about my rankings? Not likely but I will continue to do this for some reason. Let’s rank it and see what crappy record I need to listen to next.
Supergrass
3/5
Well looks like another crappy album after all. Let’s see. Half way through and I wouldn’t call it crappy at all. More mid 90s British alternative reminds me a lot of pulp. Couple of catchy things here nothing I’d ever come back to. Unless something blows me away in the back end of the record. Nope. Nothing blew me away.
Suede
3/5
More Brit early 90s alternative rock. Cool little record I liked it. Never heard of these guys but apparently they inspired bigger acts like oasis. Never made it big. Worth the listen.
3/5
This was cool. Great 70s rock. I was reminded a lot of the who. I’d listen again.
R.E.M.
3/5
REM is in interesting band. Some really corny songs. Some really self important nonsense a then some really great rock songs. I like them this was a little too indie - it reminds me of high school girls in the 80s that wore doc martins.
Led Zeppelin
5/5
Classic. Love the deep cuts on this one. Doesn’t feel bloated dare I say it is underrated. I’d like to know the story behind this one - why a double album? I’ll say it again, probably the best rock band ever. Jimmy Page is amazing.
Ray Price
3/5
What a time to be alive. Made depressed drinking sound ok and almost warranted. Country blues super polished and just felt very white. White blues for sure.
Oasis
4/5
I’m shocked. This actually rocked. Easy 4 stars. Really really liked this. So British. Great melodies. I may listen to these guys often.
Thundercat
3/5
This was weird. Apparently a virtuoso on bass, he had a lot of collaborations. But it was very anime type strangeness. Couldn’t get into it at all. But not 2 star bad.
Black Sabbath
5/5
What a record. Year after hippy summer of love and then war pigs comes out. Outstanding record. The riffs are relentless and geezer butler is criminally underrated as a bass player.
Marvin Gaye
3/5
Not exactly what I expected but damn close. I thought it was going to be more about banging. Still good. But won’t listen again. I’d like to give 3.5 but alas just a three.
The Monks
3/5
Annoying had to listen on YouTube. But this was more aggressive than I expected. Pioneers of punk maybe? Looked them up and haircuts were priceless. Boys are boys and girls are choice - poignant stuff.
The Verve
4/5
I’m coming off of the oasis record I thought I was getting more of the same. This one wasn’t as rocking, but it was the best U2 record I heard in a long time. I got into this, lots of different vibes in the record, great production. I’m gonna give this a 4. Maybe too strong a score but my attention was never drifting away. That says something.
Eels
3/5
More mid 90s alternative rock. This was cool. I have seen this album cover before, I enjoyed the record but just kind of forgettable. More great production though - I really do love the 90s music. Another 3.5 but think I’m rounding down here. No flaunting these guys but hilonestly I don’t even know if they came out with another record. Not interesting enough to see history or if still around.
Amy Winehouse
4/5
This was a really soulful boozy album for a young girl. I wonder how much the producer played apart, but I guess the most impressive thing is that I always look at this record and she wrote every song I think. After listening to the record and full, maybe it’s a little bit overrated because it’s just kind of boring but what a talent and what a waste of a life. Well, not a waste of a life, but talent gone too soon.
The Smiths
3/5
Didn’t love this one. Early alt kinda whiney maybe original emo stuff. Give me the cure over this any day.
Ash
3/5
Mid 90s rock album that had modest success in the uk and nowhere else. Apparently Ireland maybe. And I don’t think they are part of the uk. This was utterly average. Really didn’t want o finish it while on vacation but I did.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Listened to this one with my oldest daughter in the car. We were both kinda bored but there is something clearly special about her voice. Very calm and natural that’s what made this good.
Throwing Muses
3/5
When it first started playing all I thought was haphazard all over the place alt rock. Not what I expected. Heard a lot of violent femmes and remained me of the breeders. Interesting music and there seems to be some longevity to them. Not bad at all. Didn’t want to rush to shut it off. That’s saying something.
The Who
4/5
What a band, what a career. 19-21 year old kids creating this always amazes me. The stand out tracks are great, my generation is one of the greatest songs ever. The attitude and talent is just fun to listen to. Keith moon is a beast and Pete is a legend.
4/5
I remember being in high school U2 were huge. I wouldn’t call myself a fan but was familiar with the hits. When this came out I recall being a little disappointed because it was so mellow. But definitely a fan of the record and it took them to another stratosphere. Record still holds up. Good stuff. They are often cited as one of the most overrated ever but I disagree.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
Pretty boring record. Knew mansion on the hill. Next song reminded me of a John mellencamp song. Hoped for more considering his legacy.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
Little more punk than I expected didn’t do a whole lot for me. I gotta assume they were inspirational to some gonna guess Florence and the machine and the yeah yeah yeahs off the top of my head. Also assuming there is some longevity with them but nothing I’d give a second listen to.
Quicksilver Messenger Service
3/5
No idea what to expect this - never heard anything about this one. Well not what I expected at all. Jam band with some fun guitar solos and instumental parts. Had to inspire lots plot people. This was a good listen. This record rocked.
Aerosmith
4/5
Aerosmith was ruined for me before I could give them a chance. In high school we were bombarded with dude looks like a lady and I hated that song. I knew the classics but it was all ruined by that song. This album fucking rocks. Sweet emotion is an all time great and no more no more is a great deep cut find. I loved it. Easy 4 stars. Great fucking record.
Aretha Franklin
4/5
Classic songs, amazing voice nothing not to like here. Didn’t need to listen to the mono versions. Gonna give this a 4 because of the legendary status. Ain’t no way was a stand out for me.
Neil Young
4/5
Another good Neil young record, much better than his crazy horse stuff. Like the vibe, and his voice works despite the uniqueness. Laid back bluesy folky mellow rock and roll. Love it.
Black Sabbath
4/5
Love that I got to listen to this right after ozzy’s death. Focusing on this record, it’s not one of my favorites but it’s still great. I always an enjoyed little interludes like Laguna sunrise to offset the sludginess. Great album closer in under the sun…ozzy is an icon
3/5
Exactly what you’d expect from early yes. Ultra proggy, great musicianship. The whole time I just thought I’d so much rather be listening to Rush.
White Denim
3/5
Cool little indie rock jam band not overly obnoxious record. A manageable 35-40 minutes. Didn’t bore me but didn’t excite me either. Kinda forgettable. But by no means bad, glad I listened.
Paul Simon
3/5
I remember this record being huge among adults. I don’t know much about Paul Simon’s discography but insuspect this record was an evolution for him at a time when infusing world music into American pop was all the rage. Between this, Bobby Mcferrin and even Peter Gabriel it was everywhere in the mid 80’s. Quirky is the best word to describe this record.
Joy Division
2/5
Half way through and I can say this is fucking terrible. I hate it. Maybe became little more bearable but still hated this.
Rahul Dev Burman
3/5
There was some western flare thrown in here but this is very ethnic. Tough to say if good or bad just not anywhere near my wheelhouse.
Roxy Music
3/5
Heard of them but none of their music. Listened yesterday while busy but I remember a few songs that were cool. Angry love lyrics. Some lame songs some good ones, glad I listened.
Barry Adamson
3/5
This was not bad. I was even playing it with the family in the car and they didn’t complain. Cool stuff I’d call it alternative jazz. Very 90s sampling stuff. Glad I listened.
Wilco
4/5
Had a couple of Wilco records here and the music always interests me. There is nothing flashy, nothing exceptional, just damn good music. This would be a 3.5 but I’m not sure if I should round up or down. I think I’ll round up. It’s better than some threes I’ve given.
Lloyd Cole And The Commotions
3/5
Much poppier than I expected. Really super clean production. Actually enjoyed a couple of the songs. Very light, very thin. British synth pop. Three stars.
The Vines
3/5
This was a cool Little Rock and roll record. Never heard of them, but I like me it. Good stuff.
Mylo
3/5
Given the title of the record I was expecting something a little more aggressive, or at least controversial. Just more background ambiance music. Title track was pretty catchy.
Dinosaur Jr.
3/5
I listened to this on Friday and had some thoughts I wanted to write but never did and now I can’t remember anything specific about this. I think it felt like ot was almost pregrungie but it was heavier than the 90s “hits” that i know. It was fine.
Orange Juice
3/5
After the first minute of listening all I hear is talking heads with more synth type sounds. Really clean sounding record love the production. Harmless record.
Black Flag
4/5
This was awesome. I preferred hardcore to punk by a mile. I never listened to their studio stuff but I remember in high school I had the live recording who’s got the 10.5. Gimmie gimme gimme is just awesome. Gonna go play that live record now. I remember listening to the bass on that record and wanting to learn. Awesome stuff.
Lauryn Hill
3/5
Funny my brother in law plays in a cover band and he did Linda rondstadt version and I thought I need to give the Lauryn hill record a listen. It’s always highly regarded as one of the greats. Now here it is. I shall listen. I wanted to like it more. I found it hard to find the groove I just couldn’t connect with it. Talented for sure just not for me.
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
3/5
Feels like the first movie score on this list. There have been soundtracks but not scores. I have no idea what the penguin cafe is. Anyway I was listening to this in my car driving my son somewhere and he goes omg Travis Scott I think sampled this song. He played it and we compared and checked credits it was close but not exact. This is fine. I’d give it 3.5 but not rounding up.
John Prine
3/5
Another dude I never heard of. Should have known by the hay in the cover that this would be ultra country. I thought more folk. Further I got in it was more folk with country twang. I liked this. Interesting lyrics. Nicer melodies than country for sure. More diverse instruments it felt like. I’d listen to this again for sure. Worst part was his voice - but not annoying, just not polished.
Deerhunter
3/5
Interesting stuff here. Would have sworn they were British. Beatles inlence I hear. Very poppy rock music but certainly not commercial. Pretty unique.
Big Star
2/5
Another one never heard of and couldn’t find anyone that has heard of them. Granted only asked two people. Anyway pop rock record from early 70. Bright shiny production. No balls. Lots of winey take me back lyrics. Corny band name and album name. I am rounding down I am aggregated with this one. 2 stars.
Steve Winwood
3/5
Jeez this wasn’t great either. When you see a chance is a classic but after that it’s another ballless record. Thin and corny. Steve winwood has some great songs and was in traffic and all that but this record is just generic.
Parliament
4/5
These funk albums are always fun. Goofy lyrics funky grooves nice to hear something not so serious. And the music is good. 4 stars.
Aphex Twin
3/5
Sounds and tones. Boring and soulless.
Kate Bush
3/5
I thought this was catchy the first time I listened. Subsequent listens were overly dramatic. Strange but calming voice. She is not pop. She is not rock. She is not alternative. Indont know what she is.
The Youngbloods
3/5
This was cooler than I thought it would be. Part jam band, part folky, part yacht rock - I can picture some of these songs as part of a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack. Not bad at all.
Little Richard
4/5
This is awesome. I love it. Nothing else to say here. I’m almost inclined to give it 5 stars. This music is the basis.
Arcade Fire
4/5
I liked this better than the last one on this list. Not sure this band needs multiple records on the list but here we are and I liked this record. Some good upbeat songs, interesting arrangements. Good stuff. I’ll give it 4 stars. Why not life is good.
The Flying Burrito Brothers
3/5
I suppose this is rockabilly? I thought it would be painful to listen to but it was not bad at all. Terrible name of a band. Wasn’t interested enough to look anything up about them. Harmless participant on this list.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
More of the same from Leonard. Dramatic folk music. Didn’t hit me like a song or two from previous listens.
Morrissey
3/5
Not sure if this guys was always a solo artist for some reason I thought he was part of the smiths. Not nearly as depressing as I thought it would be, but yes not the most positive record I’ve ever heard. We hate when our friends are successful, jeez. Very British, and I can actually see why he was popular. Some catchy stuff.
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
These guys seemed like the one hit wonder type band - but they’ve been consistently making music. Sounds like more accessible Brit synth pop. Some catchy stuff…but still pretty niche and thin for my liking.
Aerosmith
4/5
I’m kinda shocked. I liked this a lot. Catchy, upbeat and fun. I thought they had sold out, maybe they did but I slept on this. I’m giving it 4 stars and I’m gonna listen to it again.
Lupe Fiasco
3/5
Way cooler that I thought. Well produced i guess it’s hip hop. Actually is hip hop still a thing? Is it rap? I don’t but it sounded good. Nothing I’d go back to. Never heard of him or anyone collaborated with in this record. Outro thank you song was annoying.
The Replacements
3/5
This had to be a favorite of Kurt cobain - very punky alternative. Very raw and to the point. The kiss cover of black diamond took me by surprise. I didn’t hate but won’t go back to it.
The Teardrop Explodes
2/5
This was not awesome. She in the worked would this be here. Why is there an extended version of the record. Boring. Thin. Uninspired. Poorly produced. Lame. So much dislike I’m giving 2 stars and I hardly do that. Dumb record.
Stephen Stills
3/5
This was completely forgettable and I am not a huge fan of the lead track. Basically don’t try to be better. Don’t Follow your dreams. Settle for where you are no matter how unhappy you are. Boring record.
The Strokes
3/5
I expected this to be a more “fun” record. I get all the strokes, jets, struts etc all confused. This record was nothing special. But a nice Little Rock and roll record.
Manic Street Preachers
4/5
Hmmm. This rocked. Pleasantly surprised. Lyrics are a little too politically motivated for my liking but certainly interesting and controversial. I dug this. 4 stars.
The Residents
2/5
Trash. One interesting thing about this. There is a song called laughing song. And it sounded familiar. Then I remembered a hardcore mix tape I had in high school. There was a band called flipper and they must have stolen the chorus from this record for a song called hahaha.
Supergrass
3/5
Never heard of these guys but apparently big in the UK. Rolled my eyes when I saw double album. This was good - wouldn’t calm it a classic or something that made me want more but is a good 90s rock album. I have not been very insightful on my reviews but so much of this list feels generic.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
This could have been a 5!star album. But there was no need for it to be a double album. There was bloat, no need for the extended version of isn’t she lovely. But the core of this album is awesome - production, musicianship, his voice - all top tier. One hour and 44 minutes is too much.
Sabu
3/5
Sorry this all sounds the same to me, just as my favorite music in other cultures sounds all the same to them. There is no commentary to be given. Felt some aggresssion in one of the guys singing really the only thing I found distinctive. Three stars.
Nightmares On Wax
4/5
Another one that took me by surprise. I was expecting some kind of stoner who let the dogs out 90s rap. Great instrumentals, great basslines, just a solid album to groove to. I’d listen to this - it’s great background music. I’d never say man I am dying to hear that smokers delight album. That said I’m pleasantly surprised so that bumps it to 4 stars.
Eagles
4/5
Eagles bore me but this was very good. I really like the song Victim of love. Did this one have more don henley singing than usual? Not sure but easy 4 stars.
The Chemical Brothers
3/5
Started out so hyper strobe light 90s rave again I felt like I was in the movie Go. It calmed down found some grooves but it was background music. Innovative, creative but background music.
Guns N' Roses
5/5
Breath of fresh air during the cheesy hair metal craze. Just a sleazy obnoxious kick ass rock and roll record. I will say I HATE the chorus on I think about you with that little acoustic guitar bit on top of the mix. I also don’t like the song anything goes. That is total filler. Rocket queen is a great closer. Slash turned out to be one of my favorite guitar players to catch live. Yep giving it 5 stars.
Spiritualized
3/5
Generic I listened and don’t remember anything. I do remember it not being bad.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
3/5
I think we did a Beefheart record already and didn’t think we needed another one. Oh and it’s an hour and ten minutes long. Awesome. Average.
King Crimson
3/5
I may have liked this one more than the first one from the list, which I think is their most popular. Super proggy. Cool stuff.
Brian Eno
3/5
More proggy stuff. Never heard of this guy but a cool little record. One song totally reminded me of the guy who had a record on this list that sang chicken bones. I liked this. Interesting.
The Byrds
3/5
Little trippier than I expected. Opening song is a classic. Otherwise kind of what I expected nothing I’d need to hear again.
Stevie Wonder
3/5
Bunch of songs I wasn’t familiar with. Didn’t really open me up to wanting more - just a really nice and pleasant record to listen to. Easy listen. The guy is great.
3/5
This was catchier than I expected. Very beatlesesque. I remember a song they had from the 80s that was on MTV all the time. It was called dear god. That was a great song. I enjoyed listening to this record.
Soft Cell
3/5
Not into the whole new wave 80s electronic androgynous scene. It was fine. Would never listen again.
Beatles
5/5
This may have been my favorite Beatles record. Something, I want you, carry that weight are all awesome songs. Yes they have corny songs like the octopus song and a couple of others, but come together and others I can’t think of names are just awesome. Easy 5 stars.
Badly Drawn Boy
3/5
This was so boring. Indie and pretentious nonsense. I mean not bad but bland and flavorless. Nothing exciting at all. It’s not bad, but blah. Blah drawn blah. Blah blah blah.
Blur
3/5
Song two was the only song I knew and the only song I enjoyed. After the record was done Spotify played a bunch of recommended artists based on this record. I liked all those songs better than this record.
Megadeth
5/5
If they were going to have to have a megadeth record this is the one to have. Holy wars is a beast of a song. Dave mustaine is so freaking annoying though. I hate his voice. Mustsine and Friedman can shred for sure. hangar 18 dueling solos was always so cool. I have listened to this record a million times and the 2004 remix of this and all megadeth records is fucking awful. Listen to the originals.
Gang Starr
3/5
Pretty average early 90s hip hop record. Nothing special for me. Muddy production on the vocals. It was fine certainly nothing special for me. No intensity at all and certainly didn’t have an amazing groove vibe. Just felt uninspired.
Grizzly Bear
3/5
This is so boring. But I did it. I listened to the whole thing. I can’t believe this was a top 10 record in the us. There is not a heck of a lot here. Forgettable melodies, muddy production, and sounds like a soundtrack for a crappy indie movie.
Mike Ladd
3/5
This was boring. Late 90s early 2000 stoner hip hop. The last couple of songs were actually kind of interesting. But overall exactly what you would expect.
Megadeth
5/5
Good to listen to this one again. Angry and aggressive but was always more polished - as they called themselves state of the art thrash metal. His voice is awful. I listened to the wxtended version, well I tried to but the live stuff just sounded so freaking awful. Never liked them live. I’ll goven5 stars because of its innovation.
Super Furry Animals
4/5
This record kept me on my toes. So diverse and it all worked. I liked this a lot. The kind of discoveries I am here for. Thank you for this.
Jazmine Sullivan
3/5
Looks like this the most current record on this list so far. Never heard of her. I am pleased to see it’s under 40 minutes long. Feminist hip hop. She puts the pussy on a pedestal.
Justice
3/5
I am generally not into electronic dance music but this felt a little different. It was about the tempo - there was a groove to be found throughout the album, unlike the hyper paced 90s stuff. I dug this one - again the tempo and there were cool melodies throughout. I can’t give it four stars though.
R.E.M.
3/5
Fine record. Couple of good songs. I can’t take the song everybody hurts seriously after it being used satirically in movies so often.
Bon Jovi
3/5
Starts off great with some really fun hair metal classics - bad name, prayer, wanted - those are awesome songs. Then there is the grand cheese fest. Without love, I’d die for you, never say goodbye. Yuck. The production is awesome and these guys were huge back in the day. They still try playing dude can’t sing anymore.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
More of the same. What else am I gonna say except some of it is super corny and Garfunkel was carried by Paul Simon. I question if they were gay lovers, just curious nothing wrong with that.
Pere Ubu
2/5
This wasn’t good. Really at all. For some reason it reminded me a bit of primus. Need half stars. I’m rounding down. 2 stars.
Björk
4/5
Oh joy - the Icelandic church that looks like an elf and wears dead swan dresses. Well fuck me, I actually enjoyed this. A lot. She has a hypnotic voice. Extremely unique. I’d listen to this again. I’m shocked. Thank you for including this one. Everyone seems to have heard of her but I don’t know anyone that listens to her.
Don McLean
3/5
Song to hear - yes. In fact you can’t help but know this song. It’s a part of Americana. But the record? Kinda lame. His voice is too boyish and hopeful. Side note American pie if one of my favorite movies from the 90s. I wonder how much money don mclean got from that title. I’ll go ask chat gpt. He makes 300-500k a year in royalties on that song alone. The producers of the movie and him reached a seven figure settlement for using that title. Nice.
The Gun Club
3/5
I didn’t know what to expect here. Admittedly I thought the dudes on the cover were the artists and figured it would be a funk album based on the first song title. Huh, little punk rock record. It was fine I’m sure it influenced someone somewhere.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Too much Leonard cohen. Oh but it’s a shiny new eightyfied Leonard. Same stuff though. Except cheesier.
D'Angelo
3/5
90s r&b with a little jazz infused here and there. Not obnoxious. Not a challenge to listen to but this record is completely inconsequential. Did nothing for me good or bad.
Tim Buckley
3/5
This guy’s voice reminded me a lot of van Morrison. I know this guys name but not sure from where. Uneventful record for me - then Spotify started playing other Buckley stuff and he sounds different. Not like van Morrison. This pleasant street song from another album is a good one.
Arctic Monkeys
4/5
Now this was interesting. I was expecting quirky alternative spoken word music but this actually rocked. Maneskin definitely influenced by these guys. Absolutely intrigued and want to listen to this again. Really cool stuff here. Certainly not something I’d put in at a party and get everyone into it - it is niche. Jim Carey voice - “I like it a lot.”
The United States Of America
3/5
Psychedelic and trippy. That’s all there is to say about this. Must be a one hit wonder. Maybe not even a hit. Yeah baby yeah!
Joe Ely
3/5
Super easy country record to listen to. Not a ton of twang. Great voice. Rocked at times. This was good and I never heard of this guy. Very pleasant record.
The Beta Band
3/5
This was boring. Production was bad. One song sounded like the beginning bass line to sweet child of mine. Not bad. Not good. Already forgot a huge majority of what I listened to.
The Damned
3/5
This was a good one to listen ton. I have heard of this band - I recall seeing pictures of 80s bands wearing their shirts and such. A proper punk rock album without whiney vocals.
Judas Priest
5/5
Despite the overplayed breaking the law and living after midnight I love this record. It’s like the b tracks are so much better than the hits. Steeler, the rage, rapid fire, old to be wise, grinder are all great tracks. This is prime Judas Priest. Super simple rhythm section Before halford changed his vocal delivery with the painkiller record. This record was a huge part of my childhood in the 80s. Love it.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Swore this is a dupe. Anyway it’s great. Not much more to say about Stevie wonder.
Marvin Gaye
3/5
Sexy time. Iconic opening track. He must have known it would be a hit because he had a full reprise called keep getting it on mid way through the record. Not sure if that’s lazy or brilliant.
John Lee Hooker
3/5
I would have expected an album from the 60s from a bluesy guitar player like this b. Maybe he’s not from that era. I don’t know anything about him. He colaborated with Bonnie riatt who I hate since she won all those Grammies for give em something to talk about. Yuck. This record was fine. I noted no instances of awesomeness.
Everything But The Girl
3/5
Pleasant little adult contemporary (80sish) easy listening sometimes folksy album. Nothing stands out, apparently a big deal in Britain. According to Spotify their biggest hits came from other records. Very chill.
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
Very obvious what this was going to sound like. Very predictable. So very British. Very much not my wheelhouse. Thats not to say it’s not a solid dance pop record.
American Music Club
3/5
Ugh not available on Spotify. Off to YouTube. I’m always intreaguwd when it’s something I never heard of during the time when I was very in with music. No clue what to expect. This as a good little acoustic based rock and roll record. I’d listen again. But can’t.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
Not the biggest hits came from this record - but it did have Lodi and obviously green river. Not the biggest bad moon rising fan. So I was hoping for more from this. Again I wish this had half stars. I guess it’s 3.5 and I’ll round up.
The Lemonheads
3/5
This reminds me of that group of girls in hs/college that wore doc martins but were not into punk but were not in the norm either. Just kind of in limbo. Kind of like this music
Digital Underground
3/5
This song reminds me of summers down the Jersey shore at my friends house. First I limps to the left like my legs is boosted. Humpty dance. Classic song. The rest? This is an excessively long record. Only other song I recognized was doowutchyalike.
Fairport Convention
3/5
British folk music. It was fine. I powered through the outtakes as well. It was fine.
Madonna
3/5
Just a good pop album. Like a prayer is a good tune - if I was to have a top Madonna track - it would be this one. Overall it’s fine.
