Album Summary
The Clash is the debut studio album by English punk rock band the Clash. It was released on 8 April 1977 through CBS Records. Written and recorded over three weeks in February 1977 for £4,000, it would go on to reach No. 12 on the UK charts, and has been included on many retrospective rankings as one of the greatest punk albums of all time. Songs on the album were composed by guitarists Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, with the notable exception of the reggae cover "Police and Thieves". Several songs from these sessions, including "Janie Jones", "White Riot", and "London's Burning" became classics of the punk genre and were among the first punk songs to see significant presence on singles charts. The album featured Jones and Strummer sharing guitar and vocal duties, with Paul Simonon on bass and Terry Chimes on drums. The album was not released in the US until 1979, making it their second US release. The US version also included a significantly different track listing, changing the track order and swapping out several songs for non-album tracks recorded in the interim.

Great punk. This is a style of punk I enjoy when comparing to something like Sex Pistols that I pulled earlier this week.
A truly must listen for anyone interested in music. They were more influential than the Ramones (who are awesome as well) as their lyrics were much more poignant. Too bad their drug use and interpersonal drama cut them short but without them disbanding do we ever see B.A.D. or Gorillaz? A short but truly meaningful career that if you somehow missed experiencing them do so immediately.
Not recommended, unless you want a dive into early punk but I imagine there is more and better punk on this list.
10/23 Never liked punk music. This album doesn't change that. They all sound the same
Best thing about this album for me is how you can hear its influence in basically all later punk music. The album itself is fine, not exactly to my tastes, but good enough.
#12: The Clash - Self-Titled. Finally an album I'm excited for. I've not listened to anything from The Clash but I've heard good things from their punk rock fans. I'm expecting to hate the government significantly more after this. 1: Janie Jones. The opening of this track reminded me of Hybrid Moments by The Misfits and if you're reminding me of that, you're doing something good. 8/10. 2: Remote Control. This song sounds like it can't decide on whether to be The Beatles, David Bowie or Franz Ferdinand. It just sounds kinda like a mess of styles. 4/10. 3: I'm so Bored with the U.S.A. Yeah alright. A bit repetitive but still fun. 6/10. 4: White Riot. That is...a title. The actual song is ok. 5/10. 5: Hate & War. I really like the lyrics of this song. "I hate all the English men" really resonates with me. 7/10. 6: What's My Name. Slim Shady. 6/10. 7: Deny. A simple song about a liar and them getting called out for it. It's alright. 6/10. 8: London's Burning. Hope the fire department picks up London Calling. I actually really like this song. From the slurred, almost comically aggressive vocals to the catchy guitar chords. 9/10. 9: Career Opportunities. Another Misfits-esque song. Not as good as Janie Jones but still pretty decent. 7/10. 10: Cheat. "The only way to win is to cheat" - George "Gaming In The Clinton Years" Wood. 7/10. 11: Protex Blue. Nothing much here. 5/10. 12: Police & Thieves. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE!? This song did not need to be 6 minutes long. It's annoying. 2/10. 13: 48 Hours. 48. 48. 48 -HOURS- I get it in. This is another song that gets repetitive really quickly. 4(8)/10. 14: Garageland. This one is funny. 6/10. Overall I kind of rushed the latter half of this review as today was a real busy day. Favourite Song: London's Burning Least Favourite Song: Police & Thieves. Overall: 5/10 (⭐⭐⭐)
Fun and thrashy!! 3.45
I know a little bit of the Clash, having 9 songs liked by them on Spotify - but none from this album. I'm hoping to discover new stuff on this one Fun fact: I saw them live as the opening act for The Who in 1982 at Shea Stadium in NY. I found out later they released that show as a live album. If you listen closely you can hear me screaming from the upper level seats - haha! That was 5 years and 5 albums after this one came out. Going through the first time I realized I didn't recognize any of this. I'd say these guys are like the UK version of The Ramones, but more angry and less goofy gooberish. Thankfully there are lyrics for most of this because I can't really understand them with their heavy cockney accents. "Cheat" - is better than the rest, since it has different more interesting guitar. "Police and Thieves" is the best song on this one. Has much more interesting music than any song on this album - and a great overall vibe. Other songs that I ended up liking too: "I'm So Bored With the USA", "London's Burning", "Career Opportunities" I think if you listen to these 5 - you basically get the whole album. So many of these songs just sound kinda samey after a while. Liked songs on Spotify: 5/14 Rating: 2/5
An awesome album!! It’s always to hear one of these albums from an iconic band. 4/5 ⭐️ 293/1089
I'm sure it's historically significant but I already heard London Calling and didn't need to listen to this. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.
Bien.
Listening to this made me realize that parodies of punk music and punk music are pretty much indistinguishable. Low lights - Police and Thieves - truly terrible cover of a great song. Highlights - 48 hours.
Enjoyed, definitely a vibe but wouldn’t be my go to. Appreciate it though
I liked it
First time hearing the UK version. I might like it better than the US version I grew up on
Boring.
Fine enough, obviously punk, this genre just doesn't hit me super hard I suppose
Great album, personally I prefer this to London Calling
Good, direct album, probably one of the better punk/punk-adjacent albums I've listened to on here so far. Actually preferred it to London Calling
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ - 5 brilliant stars!!!!!! 8th best album we’ve heard so far (“London Calling” is the 9th) and only the 2nd best album by The Clash, come on RPG, you know you want to… Tom.
2/5
Meh. 2.2
The second half is soooo locked in. Sounds like the albums that cam eafter
A great album with *tremendously* awful vocals. 3/5
Im glad i listened and that they got better with the subsequent albums because I can’t understand half of what they’re saying in these tracks.
It makes my heart happy.
Good
punk is not dead!!
can definitely hear their influence on artists i love like green day. but i think green day did it better :’)
Nothing really interesting or clever for me here. Just very standard punk sounding music.
Classic punk rock 🪨
Not sure how to rate it since I've heard the clash so much in my life it's exactly what I expected.
Great guitar riffs and solos with a strong beat and bass line. Sounds as if they were just having a grand old time mucking about with their guitars in a garage. The snappy upbeat energy is just a nice change from a lot of music that I normally listen to.
I like it. Very entertaining
But if it's time. No track stood out
The Clash is never really bad, but I also wouldn't ever listen to this album over London Calling
One of my favourite bands, but not my favourite album of theirs.
I feel angry
Remote Control, Im so Bored with the USA, Cheat
A good view of what’s to come but not overall amazing or that memorable. They are the best to do it though, really solid writing on here. It made me want to listen to London calling though, or Rancid.
Eeehhhh, I’m very grateful to the place in history that this has, and I love the sound that The Clash went on to forge… but I just never ever want to actually listen to this era. The tone, pacing, feel of every track is just a bit too samey, there’s barely any atmosphere or dynamics, and it doesn’t feel anywhere near as raw or powerful as proto-punk did 10 years before it.
The Clash are already a well-oiled machine on their debut, displaying pop & punk perfection w/o a shred of irony or insincerity. 'It's so gray in London town / Panda car crawling around.' I love - love - the Ramones, but it's true that it's difficult to tell where the joke ends & their soul resides, but w/ The Clash, such is ne'er an issue: they're an absolute runaway train as masters of social critique, but parody is not only not their forte - it's something they resist. Give me The Clash on a bad day or a miraculous one: they cover all bases & ne'er e'er act like they're better than you. 'Hate & war (I hate all the English men) / Hate & war (Just as bad as wops) / Hate & war (I hate all the politeness) / Hate & war (I hate all the cops).' They do hate tho - that's life.
A foundational punk album. It's no London Calling. But, I do like Police and Thieves
Just awesome. This was a foundational album for me and I listened incessantly in the early 80s. Back then I had the US version, which keeps the meat of the British version but adds singles like I Fought the Law, Clash City Rockers, White Man in Hammersmith Palais, and Complete Control. Today I listened to the British version, which is unarguably fantastic. But damn I miss those singles! Still a phenomenal listen.
Good punk
LONGER SONGS PLEASE
Raw af
Much eclipsed by a more avant-garde 'London Calling', it is much more closely aligned with the typical Punk sound, making it a staple of the genre and a dynamic and fast-paced record. 8/10 [KEEP]
Of a time.
It's good but it's only a start. The clash really pushed on from here and made some amazing albums.
Still as classy as ever
Didn’t like this one as much as London calling
Great classic punk album! Love the clash!
A fun debut album. It is very upbeat and less political than subsequent efforts. Not my favorite from the band, but still solid.
Was a stone cold 10 in my youth but re-listening with the benefit of age it is a tad repetitive and almost too cute in places. London Calling is vastly superior but that’s not a knock on this album - an excellent, compelling debut that set the groundwork for better things to come.
Excellent three chord punk, like Ramones with political bite.
Great punk rock album, a classic. I probably won't revisit it but if it plays around I'll enjoy it. Very solid work.
Love me some punk
I like this debut. Not sure I’ve ever listened to it all before, but I too am bored with the USA. I do think I like Combat Rock better. Not sure why Dexy’s Midnight Runners need three entries and The Clash only get two. 4 Boolean: True
I get that it would hit hard in the 70s but does not hit me.
50 years old and still sounds fresh
I love the raw energy of this album! I know The Clash, but never got to this album, so thank you 1001 list. This is a band I wish I could've seen live, as I get the impression that as good as this albun is, it must've been so much better live. Liked Songs Added: Hate & War What's My Name Deny London's Burning Police & Thieves
music is love

it was fine
Like the Rolling Stone's album, "Aftermath", the US version was good and the UK version was not as stellar. Why does the UK torment itself?
There is a better clash album on this list, so I'll spare you from gushing about the clash for now. But also I love the clash, they are probably one of my favorite bands of all time; thus I cannot rate them without some bias. So it's a 5 from me
glad i finally had an excuse to listen to this album in full. The Clash has always been one of those bands I know about but haven't really given a chance. I knew a song or two, but hadn't ever listened to a full album. This was fun! Certainly no one can complain that the record overstays its welcome. I don't like it as much as the songs I've heard from Combat Rock, but it's still interesting
It was fine 2.5
Listened to the UK version and kinda wanted it to be over with... might have to run with the US suggestion. EDIT: US version is indeed superior, but I will keep the original rating for posterity.
The Clash were my undisputed favorite band for a considerable portion of my life. And now I just flat out refuse to listen to them except in rare situations, so I never lose the way these songs make me feel. Circa 2008, I started getting into the Ramones in a huge way and was gifted Hey! Ho! Let’s Go: The Anthology. Along with it, as a sort of “oh you might like this too, I guess,” I was given The Essential Clash. Shoutout to my brother’s wife who shaped my entire musical DNA Whereas with the Ramones set, I largely ignored the second disc and kept my focus to their earliest work (there’s some VERY very good 80s Ramones songs, one of which I still use as the basis for passwords on several accounts, guess it if you can and ruin my life!!) The Clash were the opposite, getting more interesting with each album. I’ll hit more on that when we get London Calling, which will hopefully be tomorrow. The original UK version of this album is good, because Strummer/Jones were a generational pairing and anything they did together was going to at least be interesting, and that’s why after Mick Jones left the band they never made another album again, please don’t fact check that we don’t talk about it. I don’t have a whole lot to say about the politics of this album, because immediately pre-Thatcher era racial relations and unemployment are not really my forte, but there’s some rather applicable things on songs like Career Opportunities and White Riot. But, in spite of the US domination fatigue explicitly called out on I’m So Bored with the USA (direct line from that one to Blur’s Magic America), the US version of this album is so dramatically more complete and impactful, thanks to taking out the three weakest tracks (and also Cheat, which I still really like) and replacing them with four stone cold classic bangers — 1. Clash City Rockers, which is a fucking electrifying opening to an album, a concert, whatever. 2. Complete Control, a song about being mad that a label wanted them to turn Remote Control into a single, which slots directly after Remote Control on the album. Iconic. 3. WHITE MAN IN HAMMERSMITH PALAIS, WHICH IS A GODDAMN PERFECT SONG THAT NO OTHER PUNK ACT HAS COME CLOSE TO IN THE ENSUING 50 YEARS 4. The definitive version of I Fought the Law. RIP Joe Strummer, you had the only band that mattered.
disliked this before getting coffee enjoyed this after getting coffee
turns out I like the Clash.
A punk rock classic with some bounce. I’ve not gone outside the hits or really beyond the surface with The Clash but early returns with this album are promising.
Short and sweet. Not a stand-out hit here for me but the whole album is a good time. Gimme another.
Really enjoyed this album. Only heard a few songs from it previously so great to finally give it a full listen
This is an album that feels like a Time Machine. Also it’s suuuper easy to listen to.
Markan 4 Sara 4
Mostly agreed. No clashes.
Oh wow, a punk band made an album that lasted over 30 minutes. They must have used every one of the three chords they knew. 2/5
fine ish
Pretty fun, and I'm not sure if I've ever actually listened to a The Clash album before! It is a little bit same-y though. But I guess that's kind of an overall early punk problem, not specifically a The Clash problem.
I really enjoyed this album. Particularly the songs: - Janie Jones - I'm so Bored with the U.S.A. - Hate & War - Deny - Police & Thieves
liked this! there’s a lot more thought put into it than other punk albums of the time. easy for all the songs to sound the same but they’re all interesting and unique. bass lines are sweet.
made me realize i don’t know any of The Clash outside of Should I Stay or Should I Go and London Calling
One of my absolute favorites. It must have been 7th Grade when one of my friends said, "you like The Ramones? You should listen to The Clash." And I did. And I've loved them ever since. This is kind of a perfect blue print for punk. Its fast, aggressive, loud. It has interesting lyrics that are fun while also cutting and important. I think more than anything, its thoughtful in the composition. They're fuzing genres and playing to what they're most interested in, this is most obvious in the follow up, London Calling, but you can hear the beginnings in this. Especially with ska and reggae. This one has been with me for a long time, and I revisit often. I love this record and this band.
Album #159: The Clash Genre (W): Punk rock Singles: White Riot, Remote Control I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts?: This is an essential punk album, but I’m underwhelmed by the content of it. Favorite tracks: Janie Jones, I’m so Bored with the U.S.A., White Riot
Great record. Not my favorite of theirs but still fantastic.
