Perfection
I'm more of a fan of what comes later but this is as good as more pure punk gets. Simply the best band of all time
One of the best debuts of all time!
I mean come on
debuut om U tegen te zeggen... onmisbare plaat voor elke rechtgeaarde punker
5 star straightaway with even putting it om
One of the classic punk albums for sure, straight bangers and messages that remain relevant today
Love the rawness of it
★★★★★★
Pretty much the launching point for the punk movement. Everybody wanted to be 'cool' like The Sex Pistols or the Ramones but those bands wanted to be The Clash. 5/5
A classic fave.
Punk rock
I first heard the US 1979 version of this album back in the early 90s, probably. My sister dubbed it onto a cassette for me. So hearing the original version is weird, because the order is different from what I expect, along with some of the songs are different. Still, what a great punk statement. So many of the songs aren't even 3 minutes long, but they don't feel so short. Probably "Deny" and "Protex Blue" I am not as familiar with because they were not on the US version, but I'm digging on them, they feel like new Clash songs to me. The only band that matters? Maybe, maybe not. But still, a great punk album.
One of the first and greatest punk albums from a band that didn't always want to be known as punk. It's funny - there are short songs (most around 2 minutes) and one long one (6 minutes) and you don't even really notice. The album is that seamless. And it contains everything that came to be known with punk - simple, punchy beats (but well-arranged and melodic), snarly, flawed vocals (but does the trick), and clever lyrics that run the gamut from angsty to political to tongue-in-cheek to irreverent to anti-authority (anti-many things). Such a fun, rocking album. Favorite songs were Janie Jones, Remote Control, White Riot, Hate & War, London's Burning, Cheat, Police & Thieves, and Garageland. But the whole thing was great, not a single song I disliked.
Great energy. Reminds me of Operation Ivy.
An all timer. Every track is a classic and most still resonate today.
If all punk was like this. I’d probably be a massive fan of punk. Lovely to find some more musically focussed punk rather than sticking some obnoxious tweeb in front of a microphone ruining everything 4.5
This doesn't get boring - it fizzes with excitement the whole time.
Great album!
That's it
From start to finish, an amazing album. Every song is a classic. Great hooks, great production, great words. Undeniably one of the most important and influential albums in the evolution of rock to follow. The easiest 5 so far.
It's the Clash. It's classic, iconic, and punk to its core. Very deserving of this list and much better than most of the other punk that's been on offer
This might be a perfect record and one of my favorite debuts of all time. The Clash come out snarling and are relentless for the next 35 minutes. There are so many great tracks on this my sleeper favorite is probably Police and Thieves.
janie jones remote control hate & war deny cheat garageland
I love this band. This album is incredibly solid front to back. It's not as eclectic as London Calling, but it makes it back by being more even and great throughout. They rarely fall behind the energy in their songs, and bring in fresh sounds, hooks, melodies, etc. to leave their signature on every song.
yeah baby this is a classic!! 5/5
Classic. Surprised it wasn’t London’s Calling. Maybe that will be later on this list.
This is required listening for anyone who likes punk.
Yes I owned this album when it was current (the US version). But I was more of a Jam fan than the Clash. But I also liked the Clash more than the Sex Pistols. It isn’t meant as a slam, really. But this album kind of fell by the wayside for me, hadn’t gotten listened to very often through the years. It’s a shame really, because this is a great record, still grabs you 25+ years later. This was certainly an “important” record, a genre defining record. The high points are REALLY high, and everything is solid. Everything is high energy. Quick and punchy, 14 songs in 35 minutes. Joe strummer isn’t my favorite vocalist, that’s really my only gripe. I do prefer the US version, especially the addition of singles Clash City Rockers and (White Man) in Hammersmith Palais. But that’s minor. This certainly belongs on the “albums you need to hear” list. It’s not perfect, but close enough to round up. 5/5
One of my favourites!
A straight up, roots of punk rock, masterpiece. Hugely influential band and album. No skips, just great songs.
Dig the Clash
The only band that matters.
Yes
There are not actually that many classic debuts, especially from bands that go on to have a multi-album career. This is one
Essential
"The Clash" is the debut album by English punk rock band the Clash. It is considered one of the greatest punk rock albums of all time. The album was recorded over three weekends in London and Beaconsfield, England. The Clash was Joe Strummer (vocals, guitar, piano), Mick Jones (vocals, guitars), Paul Simonon ( bass) and drummers Terry Chimes and Topper Headon. Headon would become their permanent drummer. Commercially, the album reached #12 in the UK and #126 in the US (A US version was not released until 1979). Pounding drums, guitars slashes, the band kicks in and we're off with "Janie Jones." Fast, punk and a great vocal chorus. A regular guy is losing his job but he is in love with getting drunk and stoned and Janie Jones (who appears to be someone who can satisfy his needs). The band shows their pop'-punk melodic side in "Remote Control." Jones and Strummer on co-lead vocals. They go after beaurocrats, the police, big business and record companies. The first single was "White Riot." More fast punk with nifty guitars and a solo too. They join in a riot with black people, realize they don't fit in and need their own riot. Strummer's screaming the song title of "London's Burning" highlight the song as they have no place to go and are bored with driving around watching TV. "Career Opportunities" starts off sounding very similar to their contemporaries at the time, the Ramones. We get the Joe Strummer snarl. They're attacking the political and economics in London at the time. The band really changes things up with their cover of the reggae song "Police and Thieves." At six minutes, it is like three minutes longer than any other song. The bass is prominent. The pace is slower. Echoing guitars and a guitar solo. This is a great cover. "Garageland" closes the 14-song album. Some more driving punk. It's got a bouncey beat and what sounds like a harmonica. This is a response to a critic who said that this garage band should return to the garage. The band cranks through this album with mostly short punk songs. They're melodic and catchy. Sometimes the subject matter is political and social commentary and other times they're just bored with life. Their albums would, of course, become more varied but this is the album where they stayed focus in the punk rock roots. Shoot, they're creating the roots. A great debut album and a must have.
Really hard to understate the magic between Jones and Strummer, the melodic and the brash, the rock and the punk. The bounce between those two pillars is what made The Clash the “only band that matters”, and it’s still amazing how hard some of these tracks on their debut hit. It often feels like the only thing holding everything together is a tried and true rhythm section. Bolstered by their affection for not just classic pop-rock songs, but also by the burgeoning reggae genre, The Clash’s s/t still feels like punk at its very best. Hard to not be excited by a band that has a song like Police & Thieves on one hand, and White Riot on the other. Legendary stuff from one of my favorite bands.
4/5
Rock and punk fusion at its very best. Full of both angst and joy simultaneously…singable. Stands the test of time.
35 minutes of punk perfection.
The Clash – The Clash Janie Jones – 5 Remote Control – 4 I'm So Bored with the U.S.A – 4 White Riot – 5 Hate & War – 4.5 What’s My Name – 4 Deny – 4 London’s Burning – 5 Career Opportunities – 5 Cheat – 5 Protex Blue – 4 Police & Thieves – 5 48 Hours – 4 Garageland – 4.5 Average – 4.5⭐ One of the Best punk albums ever created 👍
A great debut. A great album. A great band.
Really solid early punk. Not The Clash's best album, but an important one in the history of the genre. Favourite songs: Protex Blue, White Riot, Career Opportunities, I'm So Bored With the U.S.A., 48 Hours, London's Burning, Deny, Police & Thieves Least favourite songs: Garageland 5/5
This week in 1001 albums has been much like the 70s, in that there's been a lot of interminable prog rock, and then punk has come along at the end as a necessary corrective.
The Clash I haven’t listened to this for a long time. I had it on CD, but I think I had the US version with the different track listing. Some of those additions were great, like White Man in Hammersmith Palais and I Fought the Law, but it doesn’t necessarily feel like an album the way he original UK version does. The first 6 songs are fantastic, Janie Jones, I’m So Bored with the USA, White Riot and What’s My Name in particular. Deny isn’t great, there’s not much interesting happening musically or lyrically. It picks back up with Career Opportunities, dipping again with Cheat and Protex Blue before Police & Thieves, 48 Hours and Garageland end things back on a high. It’s similar to I Should Coco in its exciting dynamic exuberance, everything going past at a breakneck speed. And similar to Supergrass they had an audible set of influences that pushed them beyond the majority of their peers, those rockabilly and reggae elements in particular. Having a songwriting duo as talented as Strummer and Jones and having an arranger and musician as interesting as Jones was also a big point of difference as well. Although Simonon’s bass playing was relatively rudimentary on this he really drives the songs forward, and you can hear echoes of what his playing would evolve into when Topper Headon joined. Listening to this really reminded me why I loved the Clash and has sent me down a Clash wormhole for the first time in ages. It is a great album, and a great punk album, even if many of the songs aren’t actually what you might think of as punk from 45 years remove. There probably aren’t many of the first round of punk albums that can match this, along with Never Mind the Bollocks. Perhaps musically and song-wise it’s closer to a 4 but culturally and historically it’s certainly a 5, so it pretty much is dead on between a 4 and a 5. London Calling will definitely be a 5, so should this be a 4, or should I just round up because The Clash are great - Should I 4 or Should I 5? Sod it, a snotty two fingered 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐️
The platonic ideal of a seminal punk rock album. Abrasive yet incredibly melodic. Shouty and yet high-class in its execution. Topical and yet constantly fun and entertaining. There's not a single dud in this legendary debut, whether in its original UK version or its later US release. The Clash may have left its mark on pop culture through the more professional-sounding *London Calling*--when they started exploring a vast array of styles for the benefit of more general audiences--yet this first album is the essential matrix from which they started. Which is why selecting one of these two LPs and not the other doesn't make a shred of sense. 5 stars. Number of albums left to review: more than 200, approximately - I've temporarily lost count here. Number of albums I'll include in my own list: half so far, approximately (including this one) Number of albums I *might* include: a quarter, approximately Number of albums I'll never include: another quarter, or just a little more (many other albums are more important to me)
BANGER TRAS BANGER. De Remote Control hasta What's My Name es un 5 song run brutal. 10/10
Just so much more interesting than anything being made at the time.
Just straight up rock!
A true punk classic! There is not much more to say.
grounge
Janie Jones & Police & Thieves are 2 of my favorite songs of all time.
Considering the speed with which this album was written and recorded, it's stuffed with attitude and great tracks. It's also one of the albums which kicked off the UK punk boom. One of my favourite LPs.
I dislike the clash. Hypocrites. Posers. W*nkers. Try hards. Then you play them and they are genuinely one of the best bands ever. What a debut. London calling is one of the great songs of the punk era and maybe even of the rock era. So you give them one for being wankers and 12 for how good they are. I’ll average it to a 5.
Good punk album.
I forgot I loved listening to The Clash. I’m 41, makes me feel 21 again. Fucking brilliant!
Great album!
fantastic energy and vibrancy. These aren't just songs they are prophesy. This was SERIOUS ROCK n' Roll-total rebel music as intended. The Clash delivered.
About damn time
Great album! Classic punk
Thoughts before listening: Of all the early punk bands, the Clash have been the biggest influence on the brand of punk rock I've always gravitated to. This is my favorite release by them, even better than London Calling which gets most of the praise. There are a ton of iconic songs on this genre-defining album. This will be 5-stars. Review: A less snotty, more tuneful take on punk rock than what contemporaries like the Sex Pistols were producing at the same time. They also brought a point of view to the lyrics tackling social and political concerns that turned Joe Strummer into a generational spokesperson. "Janie Jones", "I'm So Bored With the USA", "White Riot", "London's Burning", and "Career Opportunities" are aboslute classics of the punk genre and 70s rock as a whole. Easy 5-star album.
It's The Clash.... Come on. Pefection 5/5 2/6/23
A fantastic mix of melody, anger, guitars, swagger. I grew up on the US version, which is inferior to this one, although I miss "Complete Control"--perhaps my all-time favorite Clash song.
...... the only band that mattered. ....10/5
Such a classic. I actually haven’t listened to this as much as London Calling, so it’s good to give it a real listen. Love the lead guitar on White Riot! The influence this album made cannot be ignored! It’s a solid 4.5 or so, I think it edges out Ramones’ debut, but I also gotta leave room for London Calling. This one leaves me wanting more Police & Thieves. Maybe I’m just not that punk rock. But man this is one of the best.
Wasn’t new to me. But it has been a long time since I listened to every track. It is so very good.
Vital.
A classic of British punk. Unlike American punk at the time, British Punk was more political and less infused with humor. This album, alongside the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bullocks, set the tone for much of what came out of the UK. These are songs dripping with social commentary, much of which was lost on a teenage American audience. What we American teens didn't get from the content, we certainly got in raw angst. After a while, they softened their sound a bit. They were still angry but not quite so loud. By the time London's Calling was released, there were more pop hooks in The Clash's music. This album is the band at their most intimidating, honest, and potent.
Foundational music. Would have liked to see more credit to the artists they covered though.
This isn’t my favorite of their albums but it is none the less a great one
Incredible. I'm not a huge Punk fan but I need to change that because this blew my hair back. So powerful, the lyrics, the music, everything so strong.
Loved it in HS. Gotta get some songs on playlists
This album zooms by, you almost miss how good it is. The Clash were always the right mix, not as snotty and ratty as the Sex Pistols, not as arty as the Jam, but just enough of each to craft memorable tunes as forbearers of the genre. While I don’t think this album is nearly as good as London Calling, it does hold up surprisingly well, the production is high quality, and there are enough classic songs here to make it a classic album.

Very interesting, I didn't know about the punk and I think this is a good album
Very good album.
During free periods in Sixth Form, I used to listen to The Clash’s debut and My Aim Is True by Elvis Costello as a double bill, because I felt the complimented each other thematically and, more importantly, they clocked in at just over an hour, so I knew when to prepare for my next class. The Pistols professed to be Anarchists, but had a very adolescent sense of politics. They were angry and unemployed and lashing out at everything, which led to some great anti-Monarchy tracks, but nothing too substantial. The Damned were great musically but mostly sang about girls. The Clash straddled the gap, being interesting musicians who were already incorporating elements of Reggae into the Punk sound. They were also angry, but had a more structured Socialist political view. They were angry at the system and were encouraging people to share their anger, to become more politically knowledgeable and active. The Clash would go on to be even more politically and musically complex, but what their Debut has that their other releases do is rawness. It sounds scrappy and unpolished, like all the best Punk records do, but with the political insight of the best of your Marxist mates. It’s great, and fun, and makes you feel righteous and angry and ready to start the revolution. Or at the very least, rail against the inefficiencies of the Greater London Transport System
Yeah!
I love it
Might be feeling generous, but thought this whole album was awesome.
Great memories but does feel a little dated. Janie Jones, White Riot and White Man in Hammersmith Palais.....oh wait a minute. This is a cracker. Great debut. Extremely 1977 and I love it.
Definitely second best clash album. Pivotal punk album. Rating: 4.5
First recorded use of guitar feedback! What an historic moment. Love Teenage Lobotomy! This whole album is great, put The Jam on the map, I love it. In all seriousness, this is in my top ten favorite albums of all time and one of the most important albums in rock music.
Perhaps the greatest punk album of all time. Chock fulla bangers.
It’s The fucking Clash. This is the only punk band that matters. For an inaugural album, this absolutely sets the tone for all of their music that follows and has had a huge impact on the world of music in the 30+ years since.
A fun collection of punk songs by one of the biggest names in the game. It's quite incredible that this is their debut, as nearly every song is a nugget of perfect songcraft. And they haven't reached their heights yet. In the absence of half-stars, I can't exactly give this four stars, can I?
The debut album of The Clash is not as diverse as their later albums and consists of more than ten punkrock classics and a sublime reggae cover of Police & Thieves.
Should I Stay Or Should I Go? Apart from that I barely know the band. For sure influential in their time. Great sound! personal top3 in no order: Remote Control Deny White Riot
So good. Every number rocks.
This plays like a greatest hits album. Every song is amazing!
Of course
Janie Jones, I’m so Bored…, White Riot, Police and Thieves. Thank you The Clash
Total classic, didn’t have to listen to it to know I was going to give it 5 stars…but I did anyway!
Police and Thieves is my jam
Fucking perfect
täydellistä
The Clash slaps!!!! I love it
Good album.
Sadly still as relevant today as when it came out.
Great album. Got hooked on them from a young age after influence from my brothers.
classic, but feels a bit dated.
Great album. Saw them back in the 70s while living in NYC but hadn't listened in a long time.
Very easy to listen to
holy FUCK i love punk. really fun instrumentals and vocals, and overall, i had a great time
All-time punk classic, without question. Social commentary with tight, pure, driving hooks. The raging, cynical, words and voice of Strummer. Top tracks for me are the inventive and relevant cover of "Police and Thieves" (recommend reading the backstory on this one), "Career Opportunities", and "White Riot" (read up on this one too).
Fantastic album. This isn’t something I would typically listen to but I can see why it’s a classic.
FUCK THE SEX PISTOLS. THE CLASH ARE SO MUCH FUCKING BETTER. fav songs: remote control, im so bored with the usa, hate and war, whats my name, career opportunities, police and thieves.
love this
The Sex Pistols were a publicity stunt. The Clash were the real deal.
This is really solid. Perfect mix of punk attitude and musicianship, the latter which helps get the message across IMHO. Stop wasting your time on the Sex Pistols. I like the US version better though.
Greatest pure punk album ever. No one matches the genius of Strummer and Jones
An album that set the high bar for all punk bands to aspire to. Few, if any, failed to reach it. A quite astounding bunch of songs, the lyrics of many are relevant still today. Janie Jones, Cheat, Garageland, Remote Control hit you like a sledgehammer, and these guys could play. Police and Thieves showed the public they were no one trick ponies. Critics and fans hailed later albums as better, but its doubtful a debut album as good as this would ever be surpassed.
I really enjoyed listening to this ftb. It's a classic for a reason!
One of the best punk albums of all time, and it might not even be a Top 3 Clash album. What a fucking band, man. Favorite track: Police & Thieves
Classic early punk, essential listening for the genre, sound recording of the album is like your in a grotty punk club in the 80's stood next to some old speakers, can almost smell the sweat, cigs and ale and i love it. Favourite song - white riot Favourite lyric - I run through the empty stone 'cause I'm all alone
they just killed it every time, a lot more melancholy sounding than expected
Love The Clash and it's fun to hear this earlier album...I've listened to London Calling several times and loved that record.
It's not as good as London Calling for me, I think The Clash are at their best when mixing in more ska/reggae as well as the pure punk, with Police and Thieves and Hate and War being a sign of things to come. Not as polished musically as their subsequent albums but the energy and lyrics can't be beaten. One of the greatest punk albums.
An undeniable punk rock classic. I don't know if the list specifically chose the UK or U.S. version, but both are great. I went with UK version, but U.S. version has (White Man) in Hammersmith Palias which is great. This isn't The Clash at their best, but its still damn good. Amazing debut that's important to the genre.
I've actually been listening listening to this album a lot recently. I'm a big fan of punk music from this era and this is up there with the best of them.
It's not the most amazing collection of songs but it's The Clash, so...
A punk classic for sure. Still great to listen to.
It's a fantastic record. This and London Calling are damn great records. That opening to White Riot is utterly infectious.
Amazing debut! Great energy. Much, much, much better while listening on headphones. I'd love to see them live. I'm shocked at how many of my favourite songs are on this album.
Incredible record. A stellar debut for the Clash. The songs are the foundations for the new wave of British Punk that followed. A classic album everyone should listen to. 9/10
Classic
The first album of this great band is a must-listen. While I like the later releases more - because the band tried out more - you can see the genius formula for great and catchy songs with 'I'm so bored with the USA'. RIP Joe Strummer who has gone way too early.
Lean, raw, urgent, energetic and angry, full of catchy hooks, thrashy guitars and youthful rage, the Clash’s debut is excellent, and up there as one of the very best albums of all time, Punk rock or otherwise.
No question that this record is one of the greatest punk albums of all time.
Some of the songs remind me of X-Ray Spex's album. Especially the chorus of What's My Name, it's very similar to the second half of the chorus in Let's Submerge. It's very possible they were inspired by the album since Germ-Free Adolescents came out the year after.
Good album
Hell yeah.
Impressiona como o disco de estreia foi definitivo para confirmar o The Clash como uma força dominante no cenário punk. Sua combinação única de sons hardcore com letras políticas e conscientizadoras criaram uma nova perspectiva sobre como música poderia ser feita.
Punk classic, but the UK version here sadly misses some great tracks from the US version - Clash City Rockers, Complete Control, Hammersmith Palais and I Fought the Law to name the big ones.
Love it.
The best Clash album. Of course, other Clash albums are 5* too but their debut is short and has the most energy.
Punk rock masterpiece. It doesn't get much more authentic than this.
This is not only proper punk, but it's a blast to listen to. It’s angry and catchy in a shake-your-fist kind of way. I love it.
I enjoyed rockin’ out to this band today…and by “rockin’ out” I mean grading…
For a punk band, these guys sure seem to have their shit together.
What a ton of fun this is! I haven’t listened to much of The Clash beyond the hits. Topical themes, fun songs with clever hooks. As much fun as a Ramones album! What more could I ask for?
Very simple and very good. Political without being naggy.
just a great album.
It's amazing how music takes you back. I recall where I was when I first heard "Police and Thieves", about a decade after it's release. I was sitting on the edge of a motel bed, on a trip with the high school debate team, listening to a borrowed copy of this album on a Walkman. I bet I listened to that song about half a dozen times in a row. And though to myself, "I need to give this band a closer listen. They sound pretty good!" Ha! This is as good as punk gets. I own a copy of the album now.
What the heck. This kicks ass. I thought The Clash were boring.
10/10
Amazing album, love the band
The Clash's debut album is the most straightforward punk record. It features driving guitars/bass/drums with angry vocals. However, hints at what's to come are present. We hear dynamic changes throughout, interesting rhythmic choices, and well balanced instrumentation that goes beyond the level of skill we usually see in punk. Though this predates the Clash's artistic apex, this record is one of the greatest punk albums and debut albums of all time.
J'ai vraiment aimé, c'es tle premier de The Clash ? Vraiment super, je vois de ou ca vient et c'est album est un classique. Meme si je n'écoute pas beaucou pe punk, celui-ci pourrait bien revenir de temps à autre. 5
An appropriate album to rate, since today is International Clash Day! The Clash is one of the best Punk debut albums, not only punk, but any genre. I would consider this even better than Never Mind The Bollocks and the first album by the Ramones. From start to finish, the songs hit fast and hard, clear and concise, a true punk classic. Definitely essential!
I like it! It's another one that's not outside my comfort zone, really. I would listen to this again, and I had heard several song before in the Essential The Clash CD my mom got me n high school. I feel like this is more melodic and produced with more skills on instruments than I usually associate with punk acts. There's probably a reason for that, but idk it.
A huge part of my early musical education. It was the right thing at the right time when I was in my early teens. And probably consistently my favourite album of theirs. Some Clash albums have better songs, but this is great throughout (with the glaring exception of Police And Thieves, which has *always* felt a little awkward and is not a patch on the original, although I get that their heart is in the right place). Playing this again I knew every single word, and shouted along joyously whilst pursuing my Career Opportunites. Favourite song changes every time, but have a particularly soft spot for What's My Name? Exemplary.
I bloody love this album. Three weeks to record, £4k all in. Money well spent. I always seem to form an involuntary knee twitch when listening to The Clash. The pace of the twitching relates to the timeline of the work - the earlier, the more twitchiness. I couldn't control my right knee this morning as soon as Janie Jones kicked in. The reggae crossover with Police and Thieves could have sounded cringe. But it has even aged better with time. It has an energy missing from the original. This is a blink and you'll miss it album from start to finish. It's fucking fantastic.
What a banger of a debut album... I'm just imagining how iconic this must've been coming out in the late 70's. Great stuff. I don't think it can come close to London Calling, but still deserves 5 stars for sure.
i actually dig the US version better but what are you gonna do, not give this 5 stars?
This was my first album. The raw energy and anger and young enough to drive on. This is how music should affect you, at the time you recognise and love the message and now, decades later, it brings back memories and nostalgia.
All time fave
Elemental
Much better than Should I stay Or Should I Go. Nonetheless I was expecting a little more oomph.
Yes! You automatically feel cooler listening to the Clash.
I love this so much. makes me want to put on my chuck taylors and be surly. always appreciated their melodic/ska-ish approach to punk. 5
The only band that mattered, for a while.
Some bangers
the cords and the vocals are good, they sound like it was very inspired by the sex pistols and have similar sounds but the clash brings so much more to then table thank just being egotistical and they sound more enveloped/developed and the vocalist is amazing, an extremely good album, all the songs are good they all have the same energy which I love and it brings the album to life
Oh thank goodness for the Clash! These guys brought punk to the popular consciousness with a skillful blending of harsh mosh pit punk rock with pop, including reggae and ska. This album is such a classic, with one classic tune after another. Angry but totally upbeat at the same time, which is embodied in the two sets of vocals - angry and gruff juxtaposed with sweet and melodious. Really, these guys were brilliant. A favorite (although I like their later work even better).
да, это то, что нужно. энергично гитарно рекомендуем
Great al
Nothing wrong with this
9/10 super fun album catchy melodies, good vibes
Hell yeah, the Clash kick ass. Five stars.
Klassikkojen klassikko
What a fantastic debut. Chock full of what would become the bands calling cards this is one of punks finest early hours. It’s loud, aggressive and seething with energy.
Classic punk rock!
essential. tx Ramones for this
All time classic
I've just about wanked myself dry. What a fuckin' masterpiece. Let's 'av it large.
A choppy, snarling snapshot of the frustrations of working class kids. Nervy, vital energy and charging, relentless rhythms.
First wave punk GOATs.
The best of the early punk albums.
The debut record and already the first masterpiece by The Clash (a.k.a. the only band that matters).
I really like the singers voice
cool
Nice and raw.
Fantastic debut album from "the only band that matters". The songs are simple and catchy; they haven't yet reached the peak of their creative powers that they would achieve with London Calling.
This is chock full of bangers: I'm So Bored of the USA, White Riot, Hate and War, London's Burning, Career Opportunities. Some less notable tracks as well, but the highs are very high.
i just can't stay in my seat listening to this. Epic. Foundational. A must have in everyone's collection
Another great classic-one of the foundations of punk. Reminds me to mention the punk history bit Fred Armisen did on Jimmy Fallon. Definitely worth a watch.
Rarely does a day go by that at least one song by The Clash doesn't show up in my day to day. This was their first album released in the UK, but the second released in North America, if memory serves. This album is a lot more raw and a lot less polished than later releases, but even this early album contains a good number of their classic songs that they'll be forever known for. Songs of protest will always catch my attention and my interest. So yeah, no brainer I'm down with The Clash.
Another I loved before this, but tried to listen to 'properly' again when it came up. Sounda like it was recorded fast and cheap (which it was), and only hints at the variety of styles and influences they would explore on later records. Some of these songs are all time punk classics, and it's the debut album by one of my favourite bands, so it's got to be another 6 star album!
My first time hearing all these songs. Makes me want to riot or something.
Love it. Classic British punk
Yeah
Uuh! Noni sitä hyvää brittipunkkia. Tai siis tää bändihän on räkärokkista jossa on ska-poljentoa aika tiukasti. Mut tää eka levy on kyl viel aika raakaa ilmaisua. Seuravilla levyillä perkeleesti enemmän sit jamaikaa. Tykkään kyl todella paljon. Jotenki tarpeeks lyhyytä ja selkeetä ja silti on hyvää melodiaa ja kunnon paatosta. Luultavasti yksi eniten muhun vaikuttaneita punk-julkaisuja. Top kybään menee täs kategorias. 5/5
Brilliant attitude, all snarl and anger, punks that could play and with something to say. An impactful and powerful debut, quite extraordinary as it shook up the music scene. And London’s Burning is one of the finest tracks to ever come out of the UK.
One of the best debut albums of a rock band — a classic. 45 years later and its energy hasn't dampened at all. It still rocks. The "Noo-whooa-ohh!" vocals that come in at 1:44 on "Janie Jones"?! So good. Listening to this for the first time in years, I paid more attention to the social and political lyrics that mostly went over my head when I was a teenager. This is actually my first time listening to the UK version of the album. I've always listened to the US version. (Both CDs were options at Best Buy when I bought it in high school and I had to make a decision.) The US version cuts a few songs and adds a few more so it was cool to hear some of these tracks for the first time. On the other hand, a few of my favorites are missing from the UK version. "I Fought the Law," "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais," and "Jail Guitar Doors" are all incredible songs. I didn't realize they were singles that weren’t recorded at the same time as the original album.
Njihov najbolji album meni
The first punk album i fell in love with - absolute perfection
Aww brilliant end to end but I’m biased. From the machine gun drumming of Janie Jones to the snotty chants of Garageland it’s such a great debut while signposting the great things this band was to become. It’s not London Calling - and it’s not comparable because it’s a completely different gente - this is the Clash at their most punk - but every ratatat beat and every riff and every bass line and every Strummer bark and Jones yap is glorious.
Great album
I don't normally fuck with Brit Punk. but The Clash and this album Fuck.
8 fucking stars. This album is a sonic attack on assholes and sitting still.
Hard to find any faults, a pretty perfect debut. Perhaps only a 9 out of 10 for their somewhat clodhoppy reggae cover.
banger.
Another no brainer 5 star album.
Punk rock warlords. Classic debut album. It’s not perfect, but it was clear from the beginning that the Clash was so much more than just a punk band. 5 stars.
I'm a sucker for the Clash.
Excellent record, never gets boring.
This was an easy listen, love the clash!
Best of the best. Incredible musicians and Joe Strummer's political convictions. The very best punk has to offer.
Somehow, I'd never listened to this. Really liked it; raw punk, but with cerebral credibility.
Me surpreendi. Lendo as letras, vi que é uma banda bastante rebelde e com um estilo de rock bem alternativo. Quero conhecer mais.
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Janie Jones, What’s my name, Cheat
I prefer London Calling, but this is still one of the greatest punk albums ever. A solid 5 star album.
Obviously a seminal album
5 all day long
just my style
Cool songs!
An easy 5. Always preferred London Calling but difficult to compare to as they're so different.
Own the album. Own the shirt. Totally my thing
One of the easiest 5 stars I’ll give. A great punk album, every song is amazing.
This is the album that made punk real. Gave it substance, weight, import. Showed what a great punk band could be. I go back and forth ad to which one is the definitive version ; the blue US version or the green original British version. The US version has more great songs...White Man in Hammersmith Palais, Comete Control, Jail Guitar Doors, Clash City Rockers, but the British version opens with Janie Jones, one of the greatest album openers of all time. Whatever version floats your boat there's no denying that what we have here is a 5 star album
Fabuloso
So great... a favourite, knew the songs, but had never listened to the album together before.
Loads of raw energy.
The brilliant simplicity of the entire album, belies the complexity of it's appeal. The sound is visceral, the lyrics have depth and a purpose, and it is all exactly what it needs to be without any fluff or pretense.
Easiest 5 ever, probably one of the top 10 albums of all time
Listened to loads before. 5/5
Raw and catchy! Police & Thieves is one of my favorite tracks. It has that playing in the garage and jamming out feel.
Super exciting, great songs delivered with energy. Not as good as London Calling and the production is weak, but still a bonafide punk classic, with lyrics sounding as fresh and relevant today as they would have 40 years ago.
Pure adrenaline from one of the most important bands of my lifetime. It hasn't aged or diminished since release.
The first really great Punk album. Urgent and thrilling.
Everything you’d want from a punk album
que banda maravillosa que es the clash no puedo creer, me disfruté el álbum de principio a fin totalmente
A fantastic debut. Much different from other punk of the day. A faster blueprint of what’s to come
Really cool album more straight punk rock than their later releases.
Classic Punk. Timeless.
top 10 album for me. My favorite Clash album even more so than London Calling. One classic song after another. I have both the British version as well as the American version I slightly prefer the US version for its inclusion of Complete Control and Clash City Rockers, though the sequencing is better on the British version because of the sequencing. But these are quibles, either versioin is a 5 star album in my books
an old favorite
Very Cool!!!
noice so far
10/10
Ich liebe alles an diesem Album omg.
Best of 70's. Instant clasic. To ten records for me
Key punk debut album. Best Tracks: I'm So Bored With the U.S.A., White Riot, Career Opportunities,
bueno
Punk en estado puro. Muchas veces escuchado
Nice!
Punk music done right, I wanna be in a grimy venue drinking a PBR tower.
An excellent album.
Great punk rock!
Love the clash and their grit
It's the best.
nigg
Can't believe I enjoyed this as much as did
It’s quite surprising really that such a straightforward and simplistic sound could shake up the establishment. By the numbers straight up rock n roll with an umpf I know punk was more an attitude than a sound or esthetic. But then again this project has highlighted to me how bland and bloated some of the 70s boomer rock was in 70s - looking at you (steely) Dan and Clapton, et al
Que espectáculo! Tão bom!!
I haven't really listened to The Clash other than London Calling but this is pretty dang solid for a debut album. Just aggressive, high energy 70s punk with short, fast-paced songs and the track list is just stacked. The bass line on "What's My Name" is awesome and I remember "White Riot" from playing Tony Hawk's Underground back in the day, and man, it still hits with that exact same burst of raw, high-speed energy that makes you want to run through a wall. "Janie Jones" kicks things off with a fantastic, urgent punch, and their cover of "Police & Thieves" introduces a really cool reggae rhythm that shows they weren't just a one-trick punk band. "Career Opportunities" has such an infectious, shouting chorus that gets stuck in your head for days, while "London's Burning" carries a gritty, driving intensity that perfectly captures a chaotic city vibe. It is a loud, incredibly fun album where almost every single song has a memorable hook. The deeper cuts feel a little rough but honestly that's half the charm anyway. Favorite song: "What's My Name"
Not sure I've ever listened to this all the way through, though I think I was familiar with nearly all the songs. First listen-through I thought it was a little same-y; later and louder listens I thought it was better and less repetitive. Garageland was the track I didn't know well that felt like a standout. I preferred the UK tracklist to the US version, which felt more like a singles compilation (which it kinda was), with varying recording and production levels, even though the US version replaces a few weaker tunes with better ones. Definite classic, but not as great as London Calling, so I'm on the fence between 4 and 5. 4.5/5
o suco do punk raiva, rebeldia, revolta critica pertinente em todos os tempos prova de q um "marginal" pensa ate mais q um "civilizado"
Good
Pretty dang good. Although my favorite album of theirs is London Calling. Bold statement, I know. Uhhhhh, are the lyrics in White Riot problematic? Or just clumsy class struggle and solidarity something something?
Great! I don’t know this Clash as well as some of the others, but it stands up well next to them.
Pretty good. The “oh yeah”s and “woo-oo” were always weird to me.
London Calling is a favorite of mine, but I've never listened to The Clash's debut album (at least not all the way through). Their sound was so well realized already. Some great tracks, a quintessential punk record, and a good showcase of their songwriting ability. I love their use of politics, one that feels grounded in reality, in real frustration, and not just contrarianism.
Not my favorite Clash album but still good punk.
Imagine this being your debut album... Fuckin class.
Yay
It's early punk, but you can hear the experimentation of the clash start to come through a little bit. Solid album, if not the most memorable
Classic original punk album. Still feels kind of fresh but super vintage all at the same time. Maybe it’s the topics and decent mixes. 4.0/5.0
A very good debut album by this band. Many songs 🎵 showcasing their talents with bigger things to come.
I need to buy this
4/5
Seek out the original album on YouTube vs the somewhat leaden remaster on the streaming services and hear the crisp, brittle charm of songs like "Remote Control" abut the broken glass sentiments of "I'm So Bored with the U.S.A." and that kind of thing throughout the whole album. It points to the larger ambitions the band would manifest and yet is still a fun and meaningful little punk record.
One of my favs from high school. Their most “punk” release for sure
An early punk record that really encapsulates the feel and energy the genre is now for. Such a fun listen, short and sweet - well maybe not so sweet; that's not very punk. Fav Songs White Riot Janie Jones I'm so Bored with the U.S.A. Is it Top 1001 Worthy (is it essential)? Yes, while it's not London Calling, that don't make it any less influential. If you want an engaging punk album, this is it
Fun and short.
Listened to this in the gray drizzling rain on my way to watch the England-Ghana match. Proper good day
US version is definitely the stronger of the 2 releases. Great songwriting.
356/1001 The Clash - s/t Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ One of the best debuts and an album where you could already see where they could head next. Great stuff.
Not quite their best, but still a hell of a debut. An absolute blast of fresh air after the bland dross that I got previously from the 1001 list.
Yep. That's the shit right there.
It's funny how strong punk can be when it's not concerned about being punk. Bonus points for The Clash spelling out the obvious ties between reggae and punk for anybody who didn't get it yet.
This is a proper Punk album. Short tracks, punchy guitar and full of energy. But when you compare this to Black Flag or the Sex Pistols it feels quite mellow by comparison. Joe Strummers vocals are by far the most melodic of the mainstream Punk bands. Does this have the angst and kick of London Calling? No. But you would be hard pressed to find a better debut Punk album. (3.500)
Opening with the punchy two minute "Janie Jones" and calling time with the anthemic "Garageland", The Clash sound a lot more ambitious on their debut record than the other first wave punk bands. They even incorporate their love of reggae on here, with an excellent cover of "Police And Theives". Despite being one of the first punk bands, they can still have a knack to write poppy hooks and a lot of the melodies on here will get stuck in your head. They would go on to become even more ambitious with future releases, but this is one strong debut.
Snarling, spitting, scratching like an alley cat, this debut album comes out of the blocks at a hundred miles an hour and just doesn't let up. There are highs and lows, but when the highs are White Riot Career Opportunities, I'm So Bored With the USA and Police and Thieves, you an forgive the lows. Punk as it should be.
8/10 Good
I tought I hated the Clash but it was surprisingly good ? Wtf ? Maybe its because I hate "Should I stay or should I go" and its alway on the radio and in stranger thing. Most of the time I find punk to be very mid, repetitive and stupid but this was prety fun and the riffs were good. But the songs are super short (another thing I dont like abouth ounk) and I think it makes it hard to realy like them. Thats why I think "Police and thieves" was the best song here.
Harsh sound compared to the following albums, however already shows us what will follow.
Exquisito
thats fun as fuck, dancing type of album there so fucking british holy shit its so fun
Cool album.
Vana hea. Mulle Clash meeldib. Avastasin seda albumit kuulates anda jaoks ühe uue laulu: "What's my name". Vanal briti pungil on oma kindel sound ja võlu. Ma igatsen seda kuulates vahel meloodiat ja võibolla see on ka selle uue laulu võlu, et klassikaliste punkvokaalide vahele on ka kuulda klaari refrääni.
4.5 stars The Clash is my favorite band. So maybe this should be 5 stars. But I don’t want to be biased. While I love this album, I know it’s not perfect. There are some songs that are filler. But the album flows together. It presents the band as they were when they started, all their raw energy. While initially inspired by the Sex Pistols, the Clash came out with this album before Nevermind the Bollocks. They were not goofing around. They defined punk music and would continue to influence artists for decades. It all started here.
Muy bueno
A classic, but London Calling still my favorite
I listened to this album as I walked a new route around downtown Glendale; the album wound up being almost exactly as long as my walk. This debut album from The Clash actually started off a lot more mellow than I was expecting. The vocal style and delivery is definitely and distinctly punk, but the musicianship is a lot closer to typical rock music than I was expecting. I can now tell that this album represents an early point in the history of punk, feeling like a stepping stone for The Clash on their way towards London Calling. This album ended up being a lot more in-line with the sound of some modern punk acts than I would have expected, sometimes feeling more punk in spirit than in sound. The vocals are undeniably punk though, frequently sounding slurred and hard to understand; however, for some reason, this didn't bother me as much on this album was it usually would have. I completely understand why this sound would have pioneered mainstream attention for punk as a genre and a movement, and I can not wait to fully hear how Londond Calling takes yet another step forward on that cultural track. Highlights: Remote Control, White Riot, Hate & War, Deny, London's Burning, Career Opportunities, Cheat, Protex Blue, Police & Thieves, 48 Hours, Garageland
p good classic proto punk. not quite developed to their full incarnation but figuring out classic tropes.
8.5/10 - Really great early punk album. I think the music and the songs are both strong throughout. A great debut album for a legendary band.
