1001 Albums Summary

Not hooking me. Fine for background. First song is interesting tho.

Has some fun songs

They speak sing. I don't like speak singing

Boring metal

Really cool guitar

Great compositions

Interesting instrumentals

I'm not a massive Leonard Cohen fan, his talk-style singing isn't for me. However, his lyricism is undeniably mesmerising, I found Steer Your Way captured my attention just lyrically. I must be honest with myself however that, while conceptually beautiful, sonically this album just doesn't do it for me. So 3/5 for me, even if objectively its probably a 4 or 5.

Added 5/10 tracks. Favourite tracks: Strangelove, Never Let Me Down Again, Behind the Wheel. 3.5/5

Love the first half of this album. Incredible composition, especially Beauty and the Beast. Didn’t love the second half of the album so much though.

Some songs caught my attention. Compositionally great, but not consistently great.

Favourite tracks: Pictures of You, Fascination Street and Lovesong

I wouldn't mind if this was background noise

I’m not a fan of electronic music but I can understand the appeal

Already know this album, Loved first half, second half not so much

I thought I wasn't a fan of Miles Davis, I listened to a couple of his other albums and they were too high energy and stressful for me, but this is right down my Alley of upbeat but steady jazz

Already know this one

I’ve listened to enough u2, I don’t need to listen to more

Too slow, songs take too long to build up

I enjoyed the first half, but later it got pretty tedious.

This album is ok, but it’s not a great introduction to blues in general. I don’t understand why out of all John Lee Hooker’s albums, the one picked to go in the list is his collaborative work. His solo albums are blues essentials, and this album veers heavily from his typical sound so it’s not a good introduction to him either.

Favourite song: Anything That’s Rock ‘n Roll

Favourite song: LA Woman

Already know this one. Classic indie rock essential album. I completely understand why people dislike Pavement. Stephen’s voice can feel a bit too grating at times, and the fuzzy guitar noise can feel like nails on a chalkboard to some, but the rest of us crave the delicious unrefined fuzzy distortion. The melodic arrangements are great as well. However, some songs clearly stand out more than others, like Summer Babe and In the Mouth of the Desert, while others are a little less memorable. Having said that, we can’t deny how influential this record was. They’ve influenced some of my favourite bands, like Broken Social Scene. 3.75/5, rounds up to 4/5

Another album I already know. Honestly, I think the worship this album gets is partly wish fulfilment on behalf of fans who prefer Coldplay’s earlier sound. It’s an ok album, but at the end of the day, come on guys, it’s really just bland soft pop. Some songs stand out, like Spies and High Speed, but the record just ends up feeling samey throughout. It’s very cohesive in terms of sound, but the songs all seem to blend together into one blur. It’s not the pinnacle of indie music everyone makes it out to be.

Another album I already know. THATS 3 IN A ROW GENERATOR!!! GIVE ME SOMETHING NEW!!! Anyways this is a pretty good introduction to soul. Otis Redding’s voice is vibrant and invigorating and the horns are really satisfying. 4/5

Jimi Hendrix absolutely shreds on the guitar. I wouldn’t say it’s a 5 for me since I’m not really a blues listener, but he was a progenitor for the way in which electric guitar was used. I enjoyed this.

Obviously I know this album. I prefer the white album though.

Favourite tracks: Where Boys Fear to Tread, Love, Cupid de Locke

Some parts were a bit too overly theatrical and cheesy for me, but there are some great arrangements that caught my ear. 3.5/5

Favourite tracks: Please Love Me, Woke Up This Morning

One of my favourites. This album was essential to the punk movement. Her take on Gloria is infectious and Birdland is one of the best songs I can never listen to. Lyrically it’s one of the most visceral descriptions of grief ever written, combined with her emotive delivery creates the most gut wrenching. She stands out lyrically and sonically and does not get the credit she deserves as a luminary in the proto-punk scene. 5/5

Elton John-esque piano playing with twee lyricism and Simon-and-Garfunkel-esque musical whimsy. Overall I like it, but don’t know if it’s something I’d consistently return to. Favourite track: Miles from Nowhere

Favourite tracks: Now I’m Here, Stone Cold Crazy

This has everything I should like, satisfying horns, catchy hooks, but idk, it’s just not sticking with me. The vocals are annoying as well 3/5

I enjoyed Message in a Bottle and It’s Alright for You, but other than that no songs stood out to me. I liked No Time This Time but wasn’t a fan of the vocals. High 3/5

Favourite songs: Tuesday Heartbreak, Superstition

Musically, I respect Rush. I think they’re an incredibly talented set of musicians. But I think this is just a band I can’t seem to get into. I have a weird relationship with prog rock. I respect the art, but I don’t have the patience or focus to appreciate it. I need music that promises immediate satisfaction, I don’t get that with this genre.

Guitar work on most songs was great. Added Waiting for the Bus

I enjoyed the songs, but not enough to add any of them. Might need to revisit this album

Liked first half more than second

Karen Carpenter has a very soothing voice, and some of the melodies were very pretty Favourite tracks: Help, They Long to Be Close to You

Favourite songs: The Model and The Robots

Loved the guitar distortion and guitar solos on a lot of these songs. Some unique production on some tracks as well like Sworn and Broken. Favourite tracks: Look at You and Dying Days

Very atmospheric with some very heavy tracks

Pleasantly surprised by this album. Was expecting not to like it as I’m not a fan of R&B but it’s an eclectic mix of many different sounds. I’m not sure how often I’ll come back to it, but there are enough interesting concepts here that I could see myself returning to it at some point.

I’ve tried getting into Fleet Foxes in the past. I’ve listened to this album twice before, but on this listen I liked them a little more. The acoustic arrangements are very pretty and there are great vocals. This album hasn’t quite hit my favourites, but maybe it will grown on me some more. 3.5/5 Favourite track: Blue Ridge Mountains
