Popular Reviews

Definitely Maybe by Oasis

It's still a superb album - some of the other Oasis ones haven't survived the passage of time quite as well but this one is a veritable classic.

Marquee Moon by Television

Classic album, shame so many people have never heard of it.

Phaedra by Tangerine Dream

At best, its incidental / background music on a low budget 70s scifi. Tangerine Dream have done some good stuff, but this is not one of them.

1-Star Albums (8)

All Ratings (125)

Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield
Jun 03 2025

Halfway through Tubular Bells part 2 it loses the plot a bit, but great until then.

Imagine by John Lennon
Jun 04 2025

Surprisingly good, only a couple of weak fillers.

Morrison Hotel by The Doors
Jun 05 2025

Not their best album, 2 or 3 decent songs, rest highly forgettable.

Blonde On Blonde by Bob Dylan
Jun 06 2025

Solid album, not amazing but not bad either

Horses by Patti Smith
Jun 09 2025

Really not my thing, more spoken word with background music. Like a female version of Leonard Cohen meets Tom Verlaine.

Synchronicity by The Police
Jun 11 2025

Solid album, a couple of fillers but mostly good / great tracks.

Smile by Brian Wilson
Jun 13 2025

Decent album, when it's good, it's really really good. Some weak tracks though and some that don't quite work.

Live And Dangerous by Thin Lizzy
Jun 16 2025

Much better than expected, and no Whiskey in the jar.

Stand! by Sly & The Family Stone
Jun 18 2025

A few good tracks, rest mostly filler at best.

1984 by Van Halen
Jun 19 2025

Surprisingly good

Tommy by The Who
Jun 20 2025

Some good, some not so good.

Nilsson Schmilsson by Harry Nilsson
Jun 24 2025

Decent album, no real bad songs, some good, just not quite enough good to be great.

461 Ocean Boulevard by Eric Clapton
Jun 25 2025

Not great for the most part, couple of good covers and Eric's own let it grow are the best parts.

Songs Of Leonard Cohen by Leonard Cohen
Jun 26 2025

It's alright. Nothing really amazing, but nothing terrible either.

...And Justice For All by Metallica
Jun 30 2025

I do not understand the appeal of Metallica. A very poor mans Megadeth.

Fear Of Music by Talking Heads
Jul 01 2025

Good album, not the best by Talking Heads but still very good.

Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos
Jul 02 2025

Solid album, couple of weaker tracks near the end.

Trans Europe Express by Kraftwerk
Jul 04 2025

better than I expected, thought kraftwerk were mostly overrated although I always liked Trans Europe Express

Elephant by The White Stripes
Jul 08 2025

Some great, some forgettable. Not as good as I thought it would be.

Henry's Dream by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Jul 09 2025

It's really not the best Nick Cave album.

New Wave by The Auteurs
Jul 10 2025

Just ok. Show Girl the best thing on the album, which descends somewhat into mediocrity from there.

Chirping Crickets by Buddy Holly & The Crickets
Jul 15 2025

Very much showing its age; probably a 5/5 when it came out but for me today, 2/5

London Calling by The Clash
Jul 16 2025

I had never really listened much to The Clash - this was surprisingly good and not exactly what I expected.

Bert Jansch by Bert Jansch
Jul 17 2025

Yeah just ok at best, for me it's a poor mans Nick Drake on this album.

Band On The Run by Paul McCartney and Wings
Jul 18 2025

Couple of good songs but the rest unfortunately were average at best.

The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths
Jul 21 2025

Great album, just a couple of weaker tracks but most are bangers.

Disintegration by The Cure
Jul 22 2025

Superb album, not a bad song on it.

Nevermind by Nirvana
Jul 23 2025

It was great when it came out and it's still great today.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
Jul 24 2025

Mostly good stuff, a couple of tracks that have meandering guitar solos that serve no purpose other than apparently to just drag the song out.

At Fillmore East by The Allman Brothers Band
Jul 28 2025

Can they play live? Yes. Is it boring as hell? Undoubtedly.

Phaedra by Tangerine Dream
Jul 30 2025

At best, its incidental / background music on a low budget 70s scifi. Tangerine Dream have done some good stuff, but this is not one of them.

Chris by Christine and the Queens
Jul 31 2025

Really dull, and this kind of pop has been done so much better than this.

The ArchAndroid by Janelle Monáe
Aug 04 2025

Quite liked it, went on a bit too long though

After The Gold Rush by Neil Young
Aug 05 2025

Pretty average album, nothing amazing, nothing terrible.

The Who Sell Out by The Who
Aug 06 2025

Listening to this album, its really not a surprise in hindsight as to why they thought I Can See For Miles would be their first #1. Most of the album is turgid stuff, but I Can See For Miles stands out like the diamond it is in comparison. Way, way too much filler on here.

The Man Who by Travis
Aug 07 2025

Maybe 2 or 3 good songs at best, the rest is very mediocre

Damaged by Black Flag
Aug 08 2025

It's alright, quite entertaining in places.

Definitely Maybe by Oasis
Aug 11 2025

It's still a superb album - some of the other Oasis ones haven't survived the passage of time quite as well but this one is a veritable classic.

25 by Adele
Aug 12 2025

Its ok, nothing that really jumps out at you as being great though. I thought it would be better than it was.

Slipknot by Slipknot
Aug 13 2025

There were maybe a couple of ok tracks on it, and the drumming was good. But otherwise I just could not get this album at all.

Screamadelica by Primal Scream
Aug 14 2025

Just an all time great album, not aged at all.

Licensed To Ill by Beastie Boys
Aug 15 2025

Uneven debut album, some good stuff of course but quite a few filler tracks.

Marquee Moon by Television
Aug 18 2025

Classic album, shame so many people have never heard of it.

The Gershwin Songbook by Ella Fitzgerald
Aug 19 2025

It's pleasant enough to listen to, but I doubt I ever seek this kind of thing out in future. Also, I'm not sure stuff like this should really count - its not just an album, its 6 volumes.

Lust For Life by Iggy Pop
Aug 20 2025

Solid album, couple of all time great tracks in The Passenger and Lust for Life

Let's Get Killed by David Holmes
Aug 21 2025

Hmmm, I guess it's ok. Nice groove but nothing stands out.

Pearl by Janis Joplin
Aug 25 2025

Great voice, the album not quite up to that level. A couple of tracks are really good but overall its pretty average fare, just leaves you wondering what might have been had she not overdosed so early in her career.

On The Beach by Neil Young
Aug 26 2025

Really enjoyed this one, much better than After The Gold Rush

Dig Me Out by Sleater-Kinney
Aug 27 2025

Just way too shouty, and because the shouty parts only seem to be the same pitch or the same two pitches alternating, it's excessive and hard to listen to. The songs that are sung normally are actually pretty good - Little Babies probably my favourite.

Celebrity Skin by Hole
Aug 28 2025

Its a decent album, for some reason I'd mostly only ever really listened to Live Through This before. Its not quite as good as Live Through This but its still a solid album.

From Elvis In Memphis by Elvis Presley
Aug 29 2025

I'm guessing this album is only included because it has In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds on it. There was maybe one or two other decent ones i'd heard of before but mostly average fare otherwise. Still, Elvis has a great voice.

Green Onions by Booker T. & The MG's
Sep 01 2025

Green Onions is a decent track, rest of it is pretty forgettable.

Bright Flight by Silver Jews
Sep 03 2025

It was alright I guess? Nothing particularly stood out good or bad.

Odelay by Beck
Sep 04 2025

Played this album to death when it came out, it's still excellent today.

Everything Must Go by Manic Street Preachers
Sep 05 2025

The last good Manic Street Preachers album.

Ten by Pearl Jam
Sep 08 2025

Thought it was a superb album on release, and it still holds up great today. I don't think its quite as good as Vs, although it's more of a 1a and 1b situation.

Melodrama by Lorde
Sep 09 2025

I really didn't care for this much; just too samey and one paced

Da Capo by Love
Sep 10 2025

Really not sure how this made the list. Being generous, its pretty average fair at best, and it doesn't seem to be any more ground breaking than any other record of the time.

Queens of the Stone Age by Queens Of The Stone Age
Sep 11 2025

I'm not sure I'll ever quite understand why so many people hold QotSA in such high regard. There is something about the sound / mix that never sits right with me and makes everything sound not quite so good as it could have. There are a couple of good tracks on this album but it's mostly unremarkable fare that goes on too long.

Figure 8 by Elliott Smith
Sep 12 2025

Surprisingly pleasant.

Urban Hymns by The Verve
Sep 17 2025

I quite liked The Verve back in the day and bought this album when it came out. Thought it was great at the time but then when Bittersweet Symphony got played to death I kind of left it alone since. Listening to it again in full for the first time in decades, it still is a very good album.

Sep 19 2025

Was my favourite Oasis album back in the day, but I don't think it's aged quite as well as the debut. I guess Gary Glitter references will do that. Still, the title track might yet remain my favourite Oasis track.

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
Sep 22 2025

Superb album, not a bad track on it.

In Rainbows by Radiohead
Sep 23 2025

Its alright? It's not terrible but I don't think its close to the best thing Radiohead ever did.

Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins
Sep 24 2025

Great album, still holds up today.

Treasure by Cocteau Twins
Sep 25 2025

Certainly not my favourite Cocteau Twins album. Nothing particularly stands out, and the gibberish vocals don't help in this regard. Still, its not terrible, just not good.

Foxbase Alpha by Saint Etienne
Sep 26 2025

The cover of the Neil Young song Only Love Can Break Your Heart is the standout track on an album that has promise but doesn't quite deliver otherwise.

Foo Fighters by Foo Fighters
Sep 29 2025

I was somewhat surprised by how good this album was on release, I guess I had very low expectations. It's not quite great, but it's certainly very good.

Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós
Sep 30 2025

I tried listening to Sigur Ros years ago but it never grabbed me at all. This album is actually much better than I remember them being - some great stuff but also some dull stuff. Overall though a decent album.

Blunderbuss by Jack White
Oct 01 2025

It was alright I guess. Definitely not his best work but yeah. Some decentish moments, and I liked the drumming, but overall somewhat forgettable.

Pink Flag by Wire
Oct 03 2025

I guess you had to be there to appreciate this? Or is it in here simply because Elastica ripped them off in the 90s? Either way this really doesn't do much for me.

White Blood Cells by The White Stripes
Oct 06 2025

Starts off strongly but fades away in the second half.

Roots by Sepultura
Oct 08 2025

This is really not my bag at all, I enjoyed the drums but otherwise hard going. Maybe would have liked it more if not for the vocals.

Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis
Oct 10 2025

I've tried to listen to this album a couple of times over the years. I guess I'm not a jazz guy. It's alright, I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again.

My Generation by The Who
Oct 13 2025

Very much a product of its time, but a few really good tracks on there.

Bryter Layter by Nick Drake
Oct 14 2025

Super album, possibly my favourite by Nick Drake. Not a bad song on it.

Legalize It by Peter Tosh
Oct 15 2025

Hadn't heard anything by Peter Tosh before - this was better than I expected, but still fundamentally unremarkable. Pleasant enough to listen to but nothing that stands out and makes you want to listen again.

Being There by Wilco
Oct 16 2025

Kind of weird album in that it seems like they just chucked everything they'd done recently on the same album. If they had trimmed a lot of the more average tracks off it could have been pretty good. As it is, its ok - some good stuff but weighted down by the excessive length and some pretty average songs mixed in.

Catch A Fire by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Oct 20 2025

Bit of a slow start but after the first couple of tracks it really came on strong. Enjoyed this album.

My Aim Is True by Elvis Costello
Oct 21 2025

Elvis Costello is someone I feel like I ought to like a lot more than I do, but his stuff mostly underwhelms. Too many tracks that sound like they would have been warmly received in the late 50s rather than the late 70s in particular. It just didn't do much for me.

Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi
Oct 22 2025

I thought this would have really aged badly but it stood up better than I expected.

Maverick A Strike by Finley Quaye
Oct 24 2025

Super album, if anything sounds better now than it did when it came out.

Station To Station by David Bowie
Oct 28 2025

Solid album from Mr Bowie. Not sold on the first and last tracks though so only 4/5

Peter Gabriel by Peter Gabriel
Oct 29 2025

Great album, but going to knock it a bit for Waiting for the big one - a bit boring and went on too long.

Hail To the Thief by Radiohead
Oct 30 2025

Some stuff on here that I like a lot - Sit Down, Stand Up is great for instance. However overall its mostly average and not enough stands out.

Face to Face by The Kinks
Oct 31 2025

Its ok, some good stuff, some average and some mediocre.

Cheap Thrills by Big Brother & The Holding Company
Nov 03 2025

When I found out who was singing I thought this would be better than it turned out to be.

Rio by Duran Duran
Nov 04 2025

Great songs, excellent bass.

Nick Of Time by Bonnie Raitt
Nov 06 2025

Surprisingly quite enjoyed it. Had never heard anything by Bonnie Raitt before and it was not what I expected.

Too Rye Ay by Dexys Midnight Runners
Nov 07 2025

Come on Eileen and The Celtic Soul Brothers are the stand out tracks, along with a decent cover of Jackie Wilson Said but the rest of it is fairly average.

Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson
Nov 10 2025

I'm sorry Willie, but country is the red headed step child.

Colour By Numbers by Culture Club
Nov 14 2025

Pleasantly surprised - had very low expectations for this one but mostly it was pretty good. Couple of weaker tracks toward the back end of the album though.

Blue Lines by Massive Attack
Nov 17 2025

Classic album, Unfinished Sympathy and Hymn of the Big Wheel my favourites but not a weak track on here. Still, for me not quite as good as Mezzanine so only 4/5.

Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette
Nov 18 2025

Was a great album when it came out and it's still a banger today.

Goo by Sonic Youth
Nov 19 2025

Not sure about this really - there are a couple of decent tracks, more average stuff and then some dross. 2/5

Caetano Veloso by Caetano Veloso
Nov 20 2025

I guess this is only on the list because it's Brazilian? For the most part, it sounds like any number of albums from this time period, nothing stands out particularly. That said, there are a few decent tracks. All in all though a pretty unremarkable album.

Be by Common
Nov 21 2025

It was OK I guess. Not that great, but i've heard far worse.

Nov 24 2025

I've tried listening to other King Crimson albums before and never really been convinced by them, but this one was genuinely great.

Safe As Milk by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Nov 27 2025

First album I ever got of Beefheart was Trout Mask Replica. Which was fucking awful. The second album I got was this one, which was great. Going to ding it a point for I'm Glad though.

Who's Next by The Who
Dec 03 2025

A genuinely great album from The Who.

Dec 05 2025

There are some tracks that I like, but overall its quite uneven and goes on a bit too long.

Dec 09 2025

I think I liked this more back in the day than I do now - its lustre has faded somewhat over the years for me. Still good, but there are a weaker tracks on it that drag it down a bit.

That's The Way Of The World by Earth, Wind & Fire
Dec 10 2025

Pleasant enough, not what I would usually listen to. Bit too much use of falsetto and some tracks have instrumental parts that seem unnecessary (All about love and See the light, i'm looking at you)

Abbey Road by Beatles
Dec 11 2025

A pretty disparate collection of tracks, doesn't really hang together well. Its mostly good with some great, but also some not so good.

Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves
Dec 12 2025

Feared the worst when I looked up Kacey Musgraves and saw she did country. That said, this is more of a pop album with the taint of country looming large. Oh What A World was really good, on balance the songs were more good than bad, but some of the lyrics were godawful.

Dec 15 2025

First half of the album was a real chore to listen to, very average songs with nothing to distinguish themselves. Fortunately it picked up about halfway through and it was a lot better after that. Still, its all relative - I wouldn't care to listen to this album again. Not that it's bad, just that it sank into the sea of mediocrity.
