Album Summary
Vol. 4 is the fourth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in September 1972. It was the first album by Black Sabbath not produced by Rodger Bain; guitarist Tony Iommi assumed production duties. Patrick Meehan, the band's then-manager, was listed as co-producer, though his actual involvement in the album's production was minimal.

gotta be honest i dont remember a single thing but it was fine
MY FAVORITE SABBATH ALBUM LFGGGG
first time listening to black sabbath and it was pretty fun!!
Charles Bradley's Cover of Changes > Sabbath's This album rocks but misses some of the hooks that Paranoid had and i feel like that can be seen by the fact that this is only called "Vol. 4" and less of a cohesive artistic bundle.
This album goes so hard and heavy while also having moments of levity mixed in. One moment you maybe trashing in the pits of hell and the next moment you're crying with Ozzy with how vulnerable Changes feels. One of their best albums
One of their best. Not exactly my cup of tea; a bit heavy, but still good
Amazing
Black Sabbath's second best album, which makes it one of the very best things ever created by humanity. On Master of Reality (their best), Sabbath fully embraced the darkness and on Vol. 4 they add an eclectic heap of coke-fuelled weirdness. It gives the album incredible breadth and contrast - the soft bits make the heavy bits hit harder and the heavy bits make the soft bits that much more refreshing! Favourite tracks: Wheels Of Confusion, Under The Sun, Supernaut, Snowblind
first album from black sabath i listen to, really liked it, hopefully not their best
I love the original run of Ozzy albums up to and including Sabotage, except this one. I want to as that would otherwise be the best run of albums by a band probably ever but I can't enjoy it the same. I hate just moaning about production but there's something about the way this album is presented that just sounds tired and lethargic, especially coming after Paranoid and Master of Reality. There are good riffs but they just don't have the same impact as say War Pigs or Into the Void I'll try again in a year Highlights: Under the Sun, Snowblind
Solid album.
5/5
8,5/10
Great tunes but no standouts
Oh yeah, these guys ROCK!
U, kr exciting! Kul. Zelo enjoyable album. "Supernaut" in "Snowblind" sta mi bla najljubša.
Kind of fitting that this came up for me right after Bowie's Aladdin Sane, because my feelings are largely parallel: great artist follows up an absolute banger of a record with a record that is good-but-not-great.
This is soooo close to a 5. I've never really listened to Black Sabbath outside of the big hits and boy was I missing out. This is just super solid metal the keeps the energy up for nearly the whole record. Only a couple songs on here that didn't do it for me/found a bit forgettable, but the rest are so damn good, especially the intro and closer. 4.5/5
I liked this album, lots of electric guitar heavy metal what can I say It has songs with nice vibes but I'd never really wanna listen to them, nice album tho! Fav album so far: Rust never sleeps
Absolute bangers
Smashing album, 'Wheels of Confusion' and 'Snowblind' are very good songs. The guitar in 'Snowblind' is perfect.
This album is an evolution of madness. I love the experimentation and the creative freedom they allow themselves.
Odd little murky beast, this. On this one, it's managed to be night meets day and all in between, while still leaning in on the essence that makes the band great. Great variety with regard to their softer side, yet they maintain their complete but careful immersion in their unique flavour of left-field religion. It's compelling throughout and never stops thumping that husky deep guitar and haunting vocals.
This album never seems like it quite knows what it wants to be. It's at its best when its pure metal with heavy riffs and great guitar tone, but there are some odd branch aways which don't feel congruent with the rest of the album and ruin the flow. Musically it is characteristically simple, some simple power chords and hooks dressed up with awesome tone and distortion. As usual the sound relies on being lifted into excellence by Osbourne's vocal performance. The album has a very muddy production quality, at times even Ozzy's piercing vocals struggle to cut through the sludge. "Changes" is a low point that has been forever tarnished by the father/daughter duet he did in 2003. "Laguna Sunrise" was another odd inclusion. Not exactly bad in isolation, just completely at odds with the surrounding tracks. I have recently become a bit of a Black Sabbath fan but I don't think this album is one of their best. A short 4* album padded with some 2* tracks.
I thought most of the music itself was repetitive and the songs went on too long; however, I liked the melody of "Laguna Sunrise". I was glad that the song didn't go on too long as I'm sure I would have gotten tired of it too. I'm just not a big fan of this genre. I'm not a big fan of the voice of the lead singer either.
A great rock album that sounds fantastic all the way through. Favourites: Supernaut Snowblind Cornucopia
Los cambios son buenos!

The roots of heavy metal and hard rock, it's Led Zeppelin turned up to 11. Pretty crazy that this was released in '72, must have blown some minds. It is thick and crunchy and has some great grooves. The production isn't that great some of it sounds very muddled. I wouldn't call this my favorite Sabbath album but it does kick ass.
No hay caso.
Someone has been in my room and taken all of my beers
I mean its black sabbath I always forget Changes is on this album

Cierra con el siniestro Under The Sun.
Wel veel akoestisch...
it was okay :)) I feel it was a bit repetitive with the songs and very 80s rock
I came into this excited to expand my Ozzy knowledge and I certainly learned something. I never knew that Black Sabbath sounded so much like Led Zeppelin at times. A little disappointed, but I know my man has better stuff than this.
suena demasiado a guatón sudado.
It's exciting to get some Black Sabbath. This is a very good record overall. It's the first time that they were in a position to take a little more time to record and it comes across in some of the details such as the use of a little acoustic guitar in the opening track and some oddball experimental tracks. We also get something unique in the band's career, a ballad. It's a good song, but honestly not something I want out of Black Sabbath. (The Charles Bradley cover is really fantastic and is better than this version.) However, most of this record is in line with what was heard on the previous record and that's great.
Nota final: 9/10
- Changes is very good
I’ve heard this before and I own it. This was the one where they switched from weed into hard drugs as an influence but hadn’t gotten completely ridiculous yet. It definitely shows through in the production which is shiny and sparkly they way cokeheads mix things, but the music is still in the pothead style. Paranoid and Master Of Reality are better but this is my third favorite sabbath album and it rocks super hard.
Thank god (or satan?) for Bill Ward. Every performance on this record is phenomenal, but it’s the drumming that transforms it from a great album to a legendary achievement. The record is full of simple but dramatic decisions that make each track more impactful — from the half-time tempo of “Wheels of Confusion” or the dynamic shifts between hi-hat and kit in “Supernaut,” to the unbalanced time signatures of “St. Vitus Dance.” It’s a showcase of skill, restraint, and creativity that makes this one hard to forget. Note: after writing my review, I read more about the album, and I learned it came out of a time of significant substance abuse by the group, Ward especially. I don’t intend to mythologize this experience. Ward is capable of great musicianship, and that is what I wish to celebrate. As historian Andrew Hickey would say, great work is made “in spite of” abuse, not because of it.
Fantastic fuzz with a heart wrenching ballad
KIIIIII Stark fyra!
Leaving aside FX, everything here is greatness. Ozzy's the archetypal metal vocalist, Geezer's songs are great, the band is Satan's miracle.
Some fantastic songs, and an iconic early metal album. 4/5.
this is the day i realized i didn't actually know what black sabbath sounded like, and i couldn't have told you what they were supposed to sound like if you had asked me. being an uninitiated listener to the hard rock / metal universe and getting some bands of that ilk from the list already, i didn't have high hopes for black sabbath... but this turned out to be a really strong album (with an interesting experimental soundscape?!). RIP ozzy and all that i see what the hype was about now... had an interesting time trawling the wikipedia article about black sabbath too and how they kept setting the drummer on fire... so: 0.5 stars for the delight of being pleasantly surprised, 0.5 for sending me on that wacky black sabbath wikipedia rabbit hole, and 4 stars for the music itself. not too bad!! highlights - wheels of confusion/the straightener, tomorrow's dream, supernaut, snowblind, cornucopia, laguna sunrise, under the sun / every day comes and goes
its really amazing and so calm, i like it a lot because is a little different of the music that i usually listen
Not my cup of tea
I don’t get this music
Nothing special
I’m glad this project spurred me into giving Black Sabbath a shot. I just wasn’t into Ozzy’s reality show shenanigans so I had no interest in listening to his music. After hearing a few albums I realized that I already knew a lot of Black Sabbath’s music, I just never associated it with Ozzy. Solid album. 4 stars
Ok rock. Good music. Yeah. Ozzy Osbourne. Good album. Entirely unremarkable from every other album on this list. Favourite: Cornucopia Least favourite: FX
Don't tell Jeff.
Surprisingly enjoyed this. Maybe a 3.5, but hell, let's go with 4.
10/10 guitar
First Sabbath record of this thing! Can't wait. Changes is an all time favorite even though it's so much different than everything else Sabbath had done. Excellent record. I wish it had been called Snowblind, as that track rips, but I understand why they didn't do that. I don't have a lot of feedback here. I love metal, so this is naturally something I gravitate to. Exceptional record.
obvious banger, already loved most the songs here
Man I love cocaine
Ohhhh hell yeah
Possibly my favourite sabbath album but it can get hard to choose, just feels like a perfect album from front to back even with FX.
Oh, I thought I liked the Sabs. It turns out I only like the first couple of albums. This one is too screamy and proggy. Cocaine fiends never make good records. White lines (don't do it).
Sure why not. I'm not much of an Ozzy or a Sabbath fan. This album is good. Varied but with a solid core that runs top to bottom. I'll throw this on again and pluck some gems for the playlist.
This sounds less like a Black Sabbath album and more like a psychedelic folk/rock album with the distortion turned way up. Ozzy still sounds like Ozzy, but except for "Under the Sun", this doesn't sound like the same band that made *Paranoid*. I'm not a huge Sabbath fan, so maybe these are really popular songs, but they don't do a lot for me.
I haven’t listened to much Black Sabbath, but I appreciate the sounds on this album. It opens up with some awesome guitar and has variation in Rock moods throughout. My favorite song is snow blind though.
✅️ STILL BANGS Favorite track: Supernaut
Clamoroso
Favorite songs: Wheels of Confusion, Changes, Snowblind, Laguna Sunrise, Under the Sun / Every Day Comes and Goes 3.5
Pretty sluggish given the working conditions.
Nice, plodding along. Here and there a weird step outside.
Listened before? No Familiar with the artist? Yes Thoughts: - Haven't listened to a full Black Sabbath album yet, just know a few hits. - I wouldn't say metal is a favorite genre of mine, but I definitely see why this is in the book. - I appreciate there's some variety here - the songs don't all sound the same which can be an issue for me sometimes with heavier music. Favorite track(s): Changes
Yeah, it rocks. Not sure what else to add other than that.
black sabbath operates on a "keep it simple, stupid" principle that i really respect.
Sabbath is a great metal band, probably the greatest, but a mediocre prog rock band and when this album strays away from metal it feels second rate and I’ll never understand why people like Changes, which feels like a cheesy torchsong to me.
Iconic vocals and instruments. You always know it’s Ozzy when you hear him (RIP) and can always tell it’s Black Sabbath by the guitar riffs. Badass energy. “Changes” is such an amazing song (check out Yungblud’s cover of it…also amazing).
Great album! Loved the song “Supernaut”
Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Masterpiece - Wheels Of Confusion is amazing and is in the conversation of being my favourite song of all time. Tomorrow's Dream is just huge and Changes is lovely, it really shows that Sabbath had serious range. Following up FX with the crazy riff of Supernaut is an inspired piece of album construction that plunges the listener straight back into the claustrophobic, dense, heavy world of Vol. 4. Snowblind is a masterpiece. Cornucopia is full of classic Iommi riffs. Laguna Sunrise is beautiful and provides a lovely contrast to the heavy tracks around it. St. Vitus Dance is massive sounding but has more of a bouncy feel than most of the album in certain parts. Under The Sun closes things out in a huge, crushing wave of doom and brutal riffs. It really feels like the end of the universe. An absolute stunner of a track to end a masterpiece of an album.
While Black Sabbath is rarely a band whose music I seek out, I enjoy it. It’s definitely a genre that I like and would like to explore more into. Black Sabbath has a distinct sound but I fear that it makes their music sound the same. I felt like I was just listening to Crazy Train over and over again.
You can't go wrong with any of the first 6 Black Sabbath albums. Every track on this album is great except FX which is just a minute and a half of guitar strings being hit with random objects with a delay added. Standout Track: Snowblind
I have a feeling this will be just about my favorite Black Sabbath album, but I still didn't love it. I think the riffs are good, the vocals are good, and there are some great guitar solos and flourishes. I liked how dyamic the songs could be. Still, I feel like I'm missing something. This music feels so simple and not that exciting. I swear Black Sabbath has this reputation of being an insane drugs and partying band, their music sounds EVIL, and "wow, it's so heavy!". Instead, I found a pretty normal sounding album that didn't really push me out of my comfort zone or get me hyped up. It certainly has its moments, and it's well crafted but I don't feel a need to revisit.
I appreciate it but I don't really like it.
Black Sabbath is just one of those bands that I only really want to listen to a little of every once in a while, but this is still a good album. “Changes” is far and away the best song and it’s a particularly good example of what Ozzy was capable of.
Hell yeah Black Sabbath, 5/5, because on the 1001-scale every Black Sabbath ranks 5. Only point of criticism is that for this release the songs are more compact. In my opinion Black Sabbath true strenght lies in the tracks where the sound is more spread out. On the other hand this album contains a lot of great music. On scale of Black Sabbath records 4/5
