Went to see how many tracks were left and was devastated to see I was only half way through. This is the first album I’ve been generated… Liked the last track though

Radiohead has always been one of those bands I pretended to love because of friends who really loved them. However I am now coming out: I never cared for Radiohead. There’s nothing technically wrong with their music but I never connected with it. I like Electioneering, but apparently that’s the odd one out on this album so…
It’s alright but I’ve never listened to this for myself, and I will continue not to do so.
I’d never heard of them at all, but I’m inclined to give this 5 stars. There was not a single second I was bored or not enjoying it. I really like the way this sounds. I definitely want to explore more of their discography.
Not that familiar with David Bowie beyond his most popular; I didn’t know he could chill like that. Vibes, relaxing.
From the album cover alone I knew this was going to be something good and then I started reading about it. I might not have rated the music as highly without the context (I still really liked it, it would have been at least a 4 anyway), but I do think who an artist is can make the music more interesting.
Anyway this is my review so I get to give it 5 stars
For the first minute, I thought it was going to be a quite dull album for people who want to pretend they’re super indie and niche, but then it picked up. This is good, and I will definitely like it more after a few more listens.
That said, I did find Mental a bit poorly written. A bit cringe. Sorry to anyone who relates to that one but it was way too surface level to work for me.
I don’t have the music vocabulary to describe this properly, but it felt like a lot of the instruments blended together in a way that made it feel flat. That’s something I really don’t like in music for whatever reason.
I enjoyed it but it wouldn’t go in my regular rotation. I’d maybe like to hear it again from time to time.
First half was okay, second half was incredible
All the songs on here were great, but I don’t feel passionate enough about it to give it a 5. That said, I will be coming back to this in the summer, which feels more appropriate for it than a soggy December, and that might bump it up to five for me.
I was hoping this would be good because of that album cover, and it was. And it sometimes sounded like robots!
I wasn’t sure what to expect going into group sex, but I enjoyed it. I’d definitely come back to it if I needed a burst of energy.
I loved the instruments but the vocals weren’t really my style. It did feel slightly repetitive in my opinion.
I liked this more than Physical Graffiti but I really don’t think they’re a band for me.

My one critique would be that I wish it felt slightly more like an album rather than a collection of songs, but those songs were still good enough to put this at five.
I had a few ideas about what this could sound like based on the cover, and the moment the vocals started I realised I was completely wrong.
There were some good songs on here, but the album as a whole wasn’t super interesting and it didn’t inspire me to want to explore the rest of the band’s discography.
Even when you manage to dodge her for most of December, the universe invents new, twisted ways for her to get you.
It was good at first but it gets quite samey. The tracks would probably sound better listened to one at a time, but together they blend together a bit. I might listen to a track or two again at some point, but probably not the album as a whole.

The first few tracks on this were brilliant. There’s a lot of energy on this album which I enjoy. I will say the second half was a bit weaker though.

I’ve been enjoying Christmas music a lot more than usual this year, so I was excited for this. I then became very disappointed. I decided not to ruin my Christmas and didn’t finish this. I put on my own playlist and the sounds of Joy Division’s Atmosphere brought me back to my good mood.
Maybe showing my age/ lack of knowledge here but I checked the reviews to see if this was worth finishing and you’re telling me this guy killed someone… Yeah there’s nothing great about this.
I was in between a 4 and 5 but I think I’ll settle on a 4 because I’m not confidently at a 5. I really liked the sound of this. I’ve always meant to listen to more of their songs but never got around to it until now.
I liked the music. Hate the album cover though. Stop staring at me like that. Put that smirk away.

I think this album is great but it’s never been one of my top albums. Shadowplay is a fantastic song and there are a lot of great moments in here, but I’ve never quite connected with it enough for a 5.

I don’t know if the rng hates me or is trying to get all the Zepplins out of the way so I don’t have to worry about them later.
I just looked it up and there’s 5 of them. I understand they’re a classic band but they all sound the same to me. Maybe I’m ignorant on rock history but is there really enough going on here to warrant 5 of their albums? I know a decent amount of people really like them, but there are bands on this list I love that should have had less albums included.
Wait this is kinda good why didn’t they just include this one. I’m not going back to this one I think but it was better.
I like the sound but I think from what I know of their discography I prefer the later stuff. Great debut though

Second half was definitely stronger. Some songs I quite liked here but others I found boring.
The first half was really good instrumentals with a guy mumbling on top. Last song was awful.
I did enjoy the second half, especially It’s A Curse and Paranoia Man In Cheap Shit Room, more. I think the vocals need to be clearer over the music, as they don’t really work for me when everything is on the same level.
I’ve never listened to The Fall before and on the second half I can really see how Datblygu were influenced by them. (Am aware this album came out towards the end of Datblygu’s run, assume older Fall songs use this emphasised speaking style too) I know a lot of bands I like were influenced by them and I can appreciate them for that, but I think the ways other bands built on their ideas are more interesting to me than the original. Based on this album anyway.
What you’d expect from The Cure, who are great. Although I’m not going to give this one 5 stars at is slightly too samey for my liking and they’ve done other things that have I have enjoyed more. Still loved it.
As someone who has had potentially embarrassingly little exposure to their music, Gimme Shelter was incredible and made me wonder what I had missed. And then the rest of the album was completely different.
I like the singles on here but a lot of this just isn’t my taste. I prefer their next two albums.
So far I haven’t been disappointed by a good album cover and title. Not quite a 5 for me but there’s good stuff in here.
This challenge has made me realise I do like the sound of country music, which isn’t very popular where I’m from. Some of the albums on here I have found sound nice but get repetitive fast. This one held my attention a lot better. On research I realise a lot of this is covers, but I’m not sure if that should affect my rating. Speaking of covers, I think this album has a great one and I like the title too.
Fun sounds
There’s a lot of good songs on here. There’s also a lot of songs.
Maybe a bit slow for my personal taste, which is a shame because this has gotten good reviews. Everyone else has seemed to get something out of this album which I didn’t. Might be one I have to listen to more often to get. I definitely like Final Days more than when I was first shown that song.
Gang of Four Stars
Actually never listened to full album by them. Realised they’re really good. On this one I can hear how they influenced the later work of my favourite band, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, and it makes sense that John Cale (I know he’s not on this one) would call their debut his favourite album.
Few alright songs, didn’t like most of it
Considering how famous they are, they are really, really boring.
Just pleasant to listen to. The last few tracks were slightly weaker and I did get whiplash in between Heaven and Animals, but I think this might be the best Talking Heads album I’ve heard so far. I had only listened to Speaking In Tongues outside this challenge and it’s a shame I missed out on this one for so long.
Took me a few tracks to properly get into it but once I did I liked it. However there was one track that had background noises that sounded too much like my front door and I thought someone was breaking in.
Not really my thing stylistically, a bit forgettable but not terrible.
Motivated me to write an email I was putting off and get ready for the day ahead even though it was dark and miserable outside. I know it would feel so good to listen to this whilst working on something for yourself like art whilst the weather outside is rubbish.
In my head I imagined she was a more country-esque artist. It wasn’t mind blowing, but I liked this album.
Didn’t do much for me, which is a shame because I liked reading all the memories people have of it.
I liked it when I was listening to it but then the rest of the day I found it really hard to remember what I had listened to. I had been in between a 3 and 4 for this and that made my decision.
Gave up on the last few tracks. Just don’t like his voice at all and the instruments aren’t saving this.

Very cohesive album which doesn’t feel as long as it actually is to me. I couldn’t stand Bittersweet Symphony and The Drugs Don’t Work when I was younger because they were very overplayed in my house, but I’m getting over it.
I thought I would like this but it really wasn’t for me. In fairness I have never liked Rock Lobster. When I was around six we had to do a dance in a school play to this and I absolutely hated the song. My feelings have not changed and I have since associated the song with that.
At first I liked the sound but every song was the same. Then they realised they have to switch things up and the album was great.
When I was at a fair once, there was a stand selling band pins. I took a Bauhaus and Depeche Mode pin and the bloke running it started asking me about other bands I listened to. He insisted this was the greatest album of all time and I NEEDED to hear it. Brought this up at a party a few days later and someone put on the record. A few people were annoyed at the dreary music but I thought it was quite good.
I prefer Meat Is Murder but Cemetery Gates and There’s A Light That Never Goes Out easily bring this to five stars.
I would have given this a 1 if the last two tracks hadn’t have been so good. Really don’t like the sound on the rest of it. I’m not sure if this would have been so well liked if it hadn’t been the last one.

Glad to see Janis again, and I had no clue she’d been in a band. Didn’t like this as much as Pearl, but it’s on the higher side of 3.
I really liked the cover art until I noticed the racist caricature which is blatantly not how the artist draws other people. It was cool to have all the songs represented on the cover like this; shame they made that decision which taints it a bit.
At first I thought I wouldn’t like it because it just sounded like generic radio pop. Then I liked it, even if it sounded like generic radio pop.
Finally got an album by one of my favourite bands. Easy five stars. The run of the first four songs is incredible and Nothing is one of my favourite songs by them.
That said, the fact their best album (Songs Of Faith and Devotion) isn’t included on this list does make me think the author chose their albums more for the singles than the albums as a whole. This one does get slightly weak in the middle for a bit. Still love it.
Not super familiar with the genre beyond it being a stable at a local kebab van (very culturally confusing place) but as an introduction this was nice. I like how the vocals swim over the instruments, which are very good too. The first track was too long for what it did in my opinion and I was worried the rest of the album would follow that structure but it didn’t.
The 21st Century Schizoid Man sample in Power isn’t that good; you just like the original song
Another great album by a band I love. There’s definitely a lot more I haven’t listened to on here than have.
Probably my least favourite of their albums on this list but it’s still 5 stars. I find it’s a bit more disorganised and I get mood whiplash between songs. There’s the darker songs (e.g Nocturnal Me and Yo-Yo Man) and then there’s the brighter songs (like Silver and Crystal Days) and they’ll be right next to each other. That said, love most of the songs on here. Seven Seas makes me happy and I think it has their only great music video. Of course, I think everyone should listen to The Killing Moon at least once. I wish I could re-experience hearing it for the first time, and that first time not being while moving boxes in a dusty shop.
A side note on The Killing Moon: I get the Ocean Rain of it all but the moment I heard it I immediately pictured running through corn fields at night, past sinister scarecrows, with only the moon to guide you. The water aesthetic with the music video bothers me because I don’t associate the song with water at all.
Started off strong, got boring.
At first, I thought my review would be something along the lines of “Bit boring. Generic pop for the time; inoffensive but lacking the oompf of their contemporaries”. However the second half hit and that side of the album was fun and I really liked it.
Really liked some of the later songs in the album that had more energy, but a lot of the songs on here were beautiful.
Loved the first half, especially What In The World with its silly sound effects. The instrumental second half lost me. They feel separate.
I’d heard a few songs by The Streets before and thought I didn’t mind them, but I can’t do a whole album. In fairness, this isn’t a style of music I listen to much anyway and I know people who love this. It’s just not for me.
Was excited for another Curtis Mayfield after the previous one. Slightly too samey to be a 5 for me but really, really good. High 4. Title track is probably my favourite. Haven’t seen the film but this definitely works without that context.

Didn’t realise this one was on the list. Love this album, especially the title track and the section of the music video where Jarvis is with the dancers.
Do agree with it being too long though. I’d get rid of Seductive Barry personally; that one doesn’t do much for me.

The first part of the album was really grating and awful. What It Feels Like For A Girl and Paradise (Not For Me) were the only songs that were at least decent, and that’s because they’re different from the sound of the rest of the album. Not feeling generous today; this is getting 1 star.
Definitely not my thing. Very repetitive and not a style of music I like. Also the texture of the masks on the front cover make me uncomfortable. I’m not scared of creepy masks but the texture is so gross and not in a cool scary way.

I did like Green Day quite a bit when I was younger, but I was mainly listening to the 21st century albums. I have never listened to this one in full before. It’s fun. Probably not what I would’ve liked when I was 12, but I definitely like it now

Wasn’t aware of Pulaar before this album and it was cool to experience that. Really liked the sound of the album too.
I knew he was a “either you love him or hate him” artist but I didn’t know it was because he sounded like that. Genuinely so fucking funny. How are some of you listening to this seriously. He sounds like the troll that lives under that bridge. Tom waits for those goats to cross over. He’s mates with the laughing gnome. What the hell is this.
It was alright at first but then something clicked and it got so good. Imagine walking around a city, like the idealised version of Paris or somewhere else you see in old films, down a path in the park with lantern-like streetlights and black metal benches whilst this plays.
Not really sure how to judge this one as I don’t really know this genre well. To me, it was alright but didn’t amaze me.

I prefer music with more going on instrumentally, but there were some beautiful moments on this.
It’s been a while since an album on here has made me read up a lot on the artist. Unfortunately (as per usual for many older artists) after learning all the good things he was involved with, I was greeted by details of horrendous treatment of women, which does sour this.
That aside, I only started reading because of how good this album was and I did really have fun with it. It sounds like the crowd really enjoyed it too. Surprised it was kept in the vaults for being too “rough” or whatever; I didn’t get that impression at all.
Started listening to this even though I knew I hated them just in case I had been too harsh on them. Less than half way through I realised I had been too generous.
I would have given this a five if it wasn't for the long monologue before the final track. It killed the pace of the album, although it made it more satisfying when the track properly started. Edging?
Also I have never watched South Park and, while reading his wikipedia, I was surprised to discover this was actually the 1969 album of a South Park voice actor.
I just don’t care
Needed a good pop album after having to listen to Radiohead and my archenemy Led Zeppelin recently. (I know this goes against the opinion most people have on here, whatever)
And this is such a good pop album. I knew Take On Me and The Sun Always Shines on TV (what a song) but I hadn’t properly listened to one of their albums yet. I really like this; this is exactly the type of thing I enjoy.
Quiet; didn't really care for this one much
First Beatles of the list and I only knew two of the songs off this. Really liked it, although I found the final song uncomfortable to listen to, regardless of whether or not it’s a character piece.

I thought I didn’t like them at all but I think I’ve only ever heard them on bad speakers. Still not on board with Even Flow though.
Great instruments on this album. I’m not entirely convinced I like eddievedderswayofsinginglikethis but I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to.
Decent but there’s a few textures to the instruments I don’t like. Also don’t like the live element of background noise; it was more off-putting than anything to me.
Finishing this felt like a mini challenge of its own. I liked it at first but after a certain point an album does just get too long. I think just the first half would have been fine. Great songs on here, but there’s just too many.
I was expecting this to be a slog but I thought it was great. I will say the (relatively) shorter songs are a bit stronger as the longer ones drag on a bit. Pleasantly surprised by this one.
I haven’t liked this album that much on previous listens (compared to others by them) but I was really into today. It doesn’t feel as tightly an album as Modern Life Is Rubbish does, if that makes sense, but the songs are all good. I’ve always liked Beetlebum and On Your Own a lot, and some other songs on here have become a lot better to me over time.
The first half of the album didn’t really feel right in my ears. The instruments and vocals felt too separate to me. I thought Asking For It and Jennifer’s Body (didn’t know where the film’s name came from either) were phenomenal, but the rest of the album wasn’t as great for me. I’m more of a Britpop person than a grunge person anyway. I can totally get why people would love this album though, especially if you had been an angsty teenage girl with this, which I am not.
Got boring fast. To be honest, I’ve never really liked California Dreamin. At least they made this a short album.
Didn’t like the first track, rest of the album was way better than I expected. Absolutely loved the second track.

Surprised to say I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. I didn’t really see myself as a Bob Dylan person from what I’d heard of his music. I was worried seeing the album closed on an 11 minute long track but it was one of my favourites. I listened to the My Chemical Romance cover a lot growing up, but when I tried to listen to the original back then I found it too long and slow. My opinion has definitely changed, although I still hear the MCR version even though it’s been years since I’ve heard it.
I think this would be a lot stronger if they cut out the weaker tracks and just made this a significantly shorter album. There’s some great songs on here but also some quite boring ones. The title track is a stand out and I wish they’d done more in that vein.

50/50 on songs I liked and didn’t like. There was a giant poster of this album in my music class which I’d always stare at when zoning out. I kept fixating on that weird bit on his collarbone.

Almost every song on here feels a bit too long, which is also the case for the album itself. There are some great moments on here and I want to like it, but I think some restructuring would make this stronger for me.
Despite being a big influence on one of my favourite bands (Echo & The Bunnymen), The Doors themselves don’t do that much for me. I feel this is quite an iconic album as well but, while listenable, I didn’t connect with it at all.
I’ve had to listen to Light My Fire two albums in a row.
A lot of this album sounds good but doesn’t do much for me emotionally. It’s just there. The highlight for me was the ending portion of the thirteen minute long track, although it took a while to get there. I didn’t care much for the covers.
Not sure how I’d rate this one as it was interesting but I wouldn’t listen to it often.
I got Einstürzende Neubauten before this, so I am in fact listening to more songs about buildings.
Not much going on instrumentally here, which is almost never enjoyable to me. Shame as I’ve liked most of the country records I’ve had so far.
I’m usually against albums being over an hour long as they often have boring filler, but this one actually uses that time effectively. Not a weak moment on this album. This is one of their finest works. Cohesive, elegant, sometimes romantic, sometimes dark.
Pretty good but not enough for 5 stars. Knew a couple of the songs on here and those are great but I also quite liked some that I’ve never heard or even seen the titles mentioned before.
There’s a few weak tracks but otherwise it’s pretty good. It makes me a bit sad seeing how young she was on the cover and what would come afterwards.
I can imagine a weird girl in the 80s being too obsessed with this and acting like this is her personal bible, in an endearing way.
However, as someone who does like 80s pop, I find that the instrumentals are often way weaker than the vocals. I wish they’d done more in the vein of I’ll Kiss You.
I know this is an iconic album, but it’s just not quite five stars for me, more out of personal taste than anything. Clearly great rappers, can’t fault them there even if the lyrics don’t always connect with me, and I did enjoy it. Most of my gripes with this are down to genre preference, and my ratings are based on my feelings not technical analysis.
Sounded really good and helped me focus on the work I was doing. It made me feel very calm and blocked out distractions. I could see myself going back to this if I need help relaxing or working on things.

First part of this album is insane. It does lose a bit of steam after B.O.B but that might just be because I really like that song. I love the presence the drums have and how strongly the words are said. I sometimes find hip hop/ rap/ similar hard to get into because I don’t really gel with simple beats but I don’t have a problem at all with this album. I love it.

I really liked Who Discovered America? but the rest of the album was just okay to me. Sometimes the different styles of the tracks felt disjointed, so much so that I looked at the tracklist to make sure these weren’t just random songs.
Honestly quite disappointed by this one. It seems popular on online music spaces (which I know can often mean I won’t actually like it because they often choose snobbery over fun anyway) and when I’ve lurked on people’s profiles here I’ve seen it get five stars often. But this did nothing for me, and I felt it would be like that since I heard the opening track. I was just bored for most of it.
I love how most tracks fade into each other. Brighton Rock is my favourite Queen song. It’s not an overly long album and it’s satisfying to listen to.
Choisir combien etoile pour celui la est un peu dure parce que c’est la bande-son pour un film j’ai jamais regarder. C’est pas nul mais je ne ecoute pas vraitment la musique comme ça tout seul. Mais je pense que dans le film ça doit être trés impressionante.
Van Morrison I hate you… But your music
Found it so boring I questioned why I gave another one of their albums 5 stars.
Most of this album sucked but it also has One Day Like This which I didn’t realise was by them. My parents used to love this song and play it all the time. Still holds up. Rest of the album? Not so much.
I find him musically boring. I know he’s supposed to be a great lyricist but I don’t want to listen to his words because of the way they’re delivered.
Insane opening and closing tracks. Getting In Tune was a bit annoying. Behind Blue Eyes is a good song but it makes me laugh because my mum got really into the Limp Bizkit cover after it was featured in the Angry Birds movie. I was really surprised to find out the original was by The Who.

I mainly did this challenge to listen to stuff I hadn’t before, but I did cheer seeing this show up. I love this album and I love the Manics. For once, I actually think the author did a perfect job at picking two albums from them. My top two by them for sure (this one is number 2).
I love Richey Edwards’ writing so much. There’s not much I can say that hasn’t been said a million times, but he’s just great. My obsession with the band actually got me back into reading, after years of struggling with it. Also shout out to Nicky Wire. A lot of the best lines on Faster (my favourite song by them) were actually by him, and This Is Yesterday is the saddest song on the album to me and is the one that really makes me pause, stop what I’m doing and listen. Part of that is also because James Dean Bradfield’s incredible guitar work. He really brings the words to life, and sometimes just shows off like at the end of Archives Of Pain. Yes is such a good opener to the album. Love the guitar on that but it’s also devastating. 4st 7lbs is also just devastating. I like PCP as a closer to lighten the mood and help you step away from the misery of the album, even if it’s still a serious song. To be honest I don’t like Of Walking Abortion, and Revol isn’t a very well liked song generally. Also since I saw it pointed out Ifwhiteamerica… shouldn’t have an apostrophe in it I can’t stop staring at the apostrophe. For a band that reads a lot, they messed that up.

Went into this one straight after Holy Bible which is a bit of a mood whiplash but it’s another album I love and have listened to a lot. Pop banger after pop banger. It’s so fun. I’ve been obsessed with this album since I first heard it. I have the original CD case which has raised lumps, earning it the nickname ‘the Lego case’. I think that’s cool.
A little thing that bugs me is that Go West has a fade out instead of just ending on a big « Go West ». Kills the mood at the very end a tiny bit for me. But otherwise love this.
Got a bit of whiplash seeing this not long after I found out about the allegations against Alex Kapranos… Odd timing.
Regarding the music itself, I used to like this more when I was like 17 or something. On relistening after having not heard the full thing in ages, there are a lot more weak tracks on here than I remembered. It seems the songs on here are either really good or meh. At one point, I may have given this 5 stars but not now. I was actually motivated to remove a few downloads off my phone because I remembered a few songs on here that I always tend to skip if they come up on shuffle. That said, I did keep quite a few
Based on his reputation, I was expecting some soppy, miserable album with shit instruments that was only good because it was sad. However, I actually quite enjoyed this. I really like the design of the cover too. It’s simple but bold.
Love every song on here, although I think I did need to listen to this multiple times before I truly got it, like most Pulp albums.
I need to punch whoever decided on the track order though. Common People into I Spy into Disco 2000 into Live Bed Show is just a weird run emotionally.
This was slightly more what I expected from a band called Funkadelic, but I still found myself bored throughout most of this.
Does what it says on the cover. Short and sweet, inoffensive, but not particularly mind blowing. Did lose me a bit when he was going on about his partner being a horse.
Hearing songs by The Divine Comedy, I’m not at all surprised that Neil Hannon went on to do film and tv music.
I wasn’t super into it at first but China Girl onwards I really liked it. You can definitely hear how it’s influenced so many bands.

Nice songs, but still not enough to warrant a double/triple album. Forgive me as I commit the grave sin of criticising a Beatles’ song writing but I do think the first bunch of songs (before Apple Scruffs) are a bit too similar, although they’re initially beautiful, at least on first listen. The last three tracks could definitely have been cut off. It’s 15 minutes of instrumental jamming which feel out of place with what was previously in the album. It doesn’t build on or reflect anything that came before it.
On the positive, there wasn’t a single horrible song on here. Some I liked less than others but nothing was unlistenable. I still think there’s too many, but at least it isn’t like double albums with blatant filler you’d never listen to. And of course there is a lot of good songs on here.
The only other LCD Soundsystem album I’ve listened to is This Is Happening, which I preferred over this one, at least on first listen. This is still great though.
I’m not 100% sold on his voice but I otherwise did really like it and am interested in hearing more by him.
The guitar is good but the vocals feel so weak in comparison. I also thought I had a higher tolerance than most for cringy / hammy lyrics but apparently not. You can hear them so clearly too.
Solid pop album slightly let down by a lacklustre closing track. I’ve never heard the album version of Head Over Heels before. Really enjoy the instrumental ending of that.
I don’t have strong feelings about this one but I was a bit bored.
CHIC was one of the first bands I got on here, so it’s nice to see a return even though this is only my 172nd album. This is another collection of fun songs with, of course, some really good bass lines.
Not really my thing. Had to force myself to finish it. Don’t think it will be particularly memorable for me either.
There’s interesting sounds in here but I’m not really sure how to rate this
First of the Elvis Costello lot. I liked the sound but it did get repetitive and songs felt longer than they were.
This sounds like an album younger me would have pretended to like to be friends with people who liked indie music even though I really did not care for it. 1 star because it’s way too long and everything sounds the same.
I’ve been meaning to check out The Kinks for ages and this has made me finally get around to it. I really enjoyed it. My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that the older style of music recording doesn’t always sit right in my ears (I don’t know how to explain it). I didn’t really grow up hearing music this old (including the Beatles) so I’m maybe not as tolerant of elements of that as other people are. I imagine I’d be obsessed with a slightly more modern version of this.
Another album on this list which is just too long for its own good. I thought I was going to love this album, but then more and more disappointing tracks showed up. The tracks I liked I really liked, but a lot of this album was a slog.
First of all, the album cover is beautiful. The colour palette is admittedly more autumnal, but the artwork is stunning. It’s the type of cover that makes you want to like an album more than you do.
I was disappointed by this one. I was under the impression I would love Talk Talk but I didn’t get much out of this. I don’t really gel with the singer’s voice, or maybe it is how it’s overlaid with the music, and the songs themselves don’t appeal to me too much. There are some good moments but the songs drag and feel a bit dull to me. I’ve heard many positive reviews about this album but it just hasn’t connected with me the way I thought it would.
I’m still not fully sold on him but I definitely liked this more than the other one I had. I actually really like So Long, Marianne but it also annoys me because it shows he did have the ability to make the songs slightly more interesting instrumentally. The minimal instrumentation of most of his songs is what puts me off his work. I know the point of Leonard Cohen is the lyrics but he is releasing these as songs, not poems. There’s a debate here about what music is and what it is for but I’m not going to touch that in a 1001 albums review. This is longer than most of my reviews so maybe you can give him credit for that.
Side note on the lyrics, there is a LOT of religious imagery here. I personally don’t connect to this as much as a lot of people seem to do. I was raised in a « if you choose to follow a religion that’s fine but we’re not forcing you to » way and ended up having very little connection to any religion. As a result of that, the impact these references seem to have on people, in Cohen’s work and otherwise, gets completely lost on me, even if I understand the background and what it means.
At the moment, the generator seems to love repeating bands within short spaces of time for me. Natty Dread was just ten albums ago. I found this one slightly more engaging, but not even enough to bump it up one star. Just don’t think I’m a fan of Bob Marley.
I had fun imagining what scenarios would be happening in this fictional film, but I don’t think this will be a regular for me.
Side note: this vaguely reminded me of Depeche Mode and Alan Wilder did in fact sample one of the songs on Recoil’s Bloodline. I feel slightly smart for being able to recognise a music thing like that because I usually can’t.
