Album Summary
Blunderbuss is the debut solo studio album by American musician Jack White. It was released in digital and physical formats beginning April 23, 2012, through Third Man Records, in association with XL Recordings and Columbia Records. Written almost entirely by White, the album was recorded and produced by him at Third Man Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. Various musical styles appear throughout, including blues rock, folk, and country soul. The album received positive reviews from music critics, who praised White's ambitious songwriting and often compared the record favorably to his work for the White Stripes. It debuted at number one in five countries and reached the top 10 in ten other countries. It was certified platinum in Canada and gold by record industry trade groups internationally. The album was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, while the single "Freedom at 21" was nominated for Best Rock Song. In addition, the single "I'm Shakin'" received a nomination for Best Rock Performance at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. The lead single from Blunderbuss, "Love Interruption", was released on January 30, 2012 via White's website. The single "Sixteen Saltines" was uploaded to White's YouTube channel on March 13, and seven days later, the song was released as the second single via 7-inch vinyl with a cover of U2's "Love Is Blindness" as its B-side. On April 1, Third Man Records released the album's third single, "Freedom at 21", by attaching flexi disc copies of the song to 1000 helium balloons. A music video for the fourth and final single, a cover of Little Willie John's "I'm Shakin'", was released on October 10, and twenty days later, the single was released digitally and via 7-inch vinyl with the B-side "Blues on Two Trees".

Jack is most definitely a different musical artist on his own than with his former wife Meg. This being his first solo album was a decent attempt at separating himself, but not his best solo material be any means. They album is a good listen and deserves to be heard but not sure it is top 1001 level. I give it a solid 6/10 and 3 stars.
Music to listen to while your wife is fucking her boyfriend
Greasy fat rat
Pre Listen: Jack White is yet another name I think I've heard of before, but I'm not sure. The album cover looks really edgy. Really makes you *feel* like you're back in 2012 and everyone's a scene kid. Lower expectations than usual. Notable Tracks: Missing Pieces - The sinking realization after hearing Jack's voice when the neurons in my brain realized it's *that* Jack White from White Stripes was painful. White Stripes is one of my least favorite bands of all time. I think they were absolute hacks with songs so cheesy it could put someone with lactose intolerance into a coma. Expectations for the rest of the album plummeted here. Post Listen: Perhaps it was my incredibly low expectations, but that album was better than I thought. Wasn't my favorite still, but compared to Jack's other work with the White Stripes, it was leagues better. Maybe it was his divorce, which I learned about after researching the guy while trying to figure out how this album sounded passable, and his earlier work sounded so garbage. Blame Yoko type thing perhaps? Her departure didn't solve everything here, I still find his voice to be annoying as hell, and his lyricism to be cringe 90% of the time, but the overall sound was so much better. This album actually has an identity, a theme, and polish to it. Folk/Country sounding Rock with elements from other genres sprinkled in, done consistently and faithfully. Maybe the guy just matured over the years. It's both interesting and pleasant to hear improvement. 3/5
#288 Heard Before? Once when it came out. Notes: - nice to see him stretch out a little, although that's mostly his collaborators - his guitar and vocal schtick is always the same. - keyboard parts throughout really liven things up and distract from the sameness. - i was going to write this off as completely forgettable, but the second half is much stronger. - "Poor Boy" got a little smirk out of me, and "Take Me With You" might be his best song ever, even though both those songs feature very awkward time changes. Verdict: Listen! It's Jack White! He's doing the Jack White thing! Listen Again? Nope. But I saved "Take Me With You".
Not as good as I thought it would be
I like Jack White's style and liked the White Stripes, but this album doesn't hit quite the same. There's some good songs in here, but none of them really had the staying power of the White Stripes era. I remember hearing Love Interruption on the radio when it first came out and thinking it was decent. Lazaretto is a much better album as far as his solo work goes. This one felt like he was working out the kinks and hadn't quite gotten his solo voice down. It's a good blues rock album, but there's nothing that really grabs your attention and makes you want to come back and listen again.
Jack White - Meg + extraneous ornamentation != grand success. It's fine. 4 keepers in 13 (31%) 1 banger (8%) 39

Not his best
8 - GOOD
I'm already not particularly fond of The White Stripes, or the same annoying Jack White song that the local rock radio keeps playing (something from No Name, I believe), so this one had a "pulling-teeth" feeling. I think Jack is very generally talented, but the way he chooses to use his talent is always underwhelming to me. Blues rock done after the 1980s is so, so hit or miss for me, and this doesn't help.
Good album, no real hit song but good songs and production.
it was ok
Meh
solid, loved this when it came out and still all around pretty good. Enjoy the varied sounds and driving beat. I kind of still love this album, a little surprised to see it here to be honest
I was introduced to Jack White earlier this year when the album generator assigned me The White Stripes. This album did not disappoint either. Quite a range of musical styles here, especially on the later half. A couple of the songs, for example, sounded like they could have come from a Beatles album.
i prefer jack black. i find this one obnoxious
bro thought we wouldn't notice he was the white stripes guy. i remember you. i didn't like you.
I can really see this helping me make sense of my life right now, or at least someone else's life. I should give this one another listen it could grow on me. Very relatable lyrics that make me feel seen and heard.
Enjoyed more than i expected
An alright album, nothing to say but was fine to listen to at work
Was once again dreading this album - I wasn't too impressed by the White Stripes entry that had come up so far ("Get Behind Me Satan"), and this being a Jack White solo album without Meg, I thought this would be even worse. Somehow it's better, and was actually pretty enjoyable. I definitely think the backing takes a hit without Meg on drums, but the rest of the instrumentation is decent and the songs are varied and interesting while managing to not actually sound completely awful. The weakest aspect of this whole album is probably Jack's voice. Feel a bit crazy for this but maybe I'm in a good mood today, low 4.
Lyrical chops about heartbreak and falling out of love with bluesy, old school rhythms and riffs. While not as electric as White Stripes albums, there is definitive substance here that cannot be captured in one listen. Good stuff.
Not bad! Some good sounds
It gets a 2 because Weep Themselves to Sleep and Hip Poor Boy were pretty good. Otherwise it bored me to fucking tears.
Blues rock hits my sweet spot. Like many, my familiarity with Jack White comes from Seven Nation Army, but I found myself enjoying other tracks on Elephant from The White Stripes, as well. This album, Blunderbuss, dials up the energy and the groove. It's not perfect but very good.
Top : Weep Themselves to Sleep Flop : I Guess I Should Go to Sleep
I miss Meg.
Edgy. Powerful. Solid.
Some good grooves and similar to White Stripes. Above avg rock.
Great album. Enjoyed

Blunderbuss is Jack White's first solo album after the dissolution of The White Stripes, and though it's a good album, I don't feel it's his best work. I don't think Jack showed how great he was going to be as a solo artist until he released Lazaretto in 2014 (which to me is more worthy of entry into the 1001 if you want representation for post-White Stripes Jack White). I enjoyed Blunderbuss when it came out, but even then it felt more like short sketches and outlines of an album intended to be finished. I think it benefitted from the hype of his new label, studio, and continued work after Meg. I might be in the minority on this one, but it's hard to recommend Blunderbuss when Lazaretto is on the horizon.
Seven nation army man debuted lol
I’ve always loved “Seven Nation Army,” but my biggest issue with The White Stripes is that their songs tend to sound too similar to me. Jack White completely fixes that problem on Blunderbuss! Right from the opening track, “Missing Pieces,” I was hooked by the guitar and organ. “Sixteen Saltines” and “Freedom at 21” brought some fantastic rock energy, while “Love Interruption” slowed things down with acoustic guitar and beautiful backing vocals. Throughout the album, White mixes blues, garage rock, piano-driven rock, and even some psychedelic influences. Another surprise was how much I enjoyed his vocals. I usually struggle with higher-register singers, but White has enough grit and emotion in his voice that it never feels forced. He's not trying to show off his range. He's simply putting feeling into the music. What impressed me most was the variety. Every song brought something different, yet the album still felt cohesive. Even the closing track, “Take Me with You When You Go,” surprised me by starting with a dreamy psychedelic sound before exploding into some serious Led Zeppelin territory. Here's the interesting thing: I can't pick a favorite song. There wasn't one track that completely blew me away. Instead, it was the entire album that won me over. Thirteen songs, no weak links, and not a moment when I felt bored or ready to move on. This is exactly why I'm doing the 1001 Albums Project. I probably wouldn't have listened to this entire album otherwise, and I would have missed something fantastic. Rating: 5/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Vinyl Verdict: BUY!
Veldig overraska over at den her e på lista. Snill firer
There's no doubt Jack White can write a killer riff, and everything here is welcome on shuffle. This is one of those areas where ratings fail, because I've rated worse albums higher. But I really miss the unhinged, electric sound of his work with Meg on The White Stripes. I don't know if it was an undefinable aura of their mythology, the excitement of how fresh it all sounded, or if their musical alchemy really did add up to something special. Obviously, Meg was a limited drummer and, by most accounts, not co-writing n a meaningful way, but I just can't get my heart around these songs, which are good, but also more of the same.
I thought this was ok at first but then it sounded too repetitive. On and On and On was the one bright spot in it for me.
Some cool moments but ultimately little I'd happily revisit
Twangy guitar and harsh drums. He has such a unique sound and yet still married his sister?
I love Jack White
I held out way too long to pop the five star 🍒 every rock album should have piano like this
yes. i like this. and the piano parts are awesome. (4.4/5)
Very iconic JW
reminded me of how much i enjoy his feature on beyonce’s don’t hurt yourself
i enjoyed the instrumentals but the vocals not so much 😶🌫️
This one is more familiar in style to me as I never really listened to older classics. Found myself liking this alt genre more, the instrumentals scratch a good itch in my ear. Love the piano parts in hypocritical kiss!! Last song’s piano > electric guitar build up was cool (middle of the song)
i ended up liking the deep cuts on this one. I’m Shakin’ was a big high, loved how infectious it was. On and On and On was also great! overall the lyricism is so pensive and creative. it made me appreciate 7 Nation Army more, which is the only Jack White song i knew before this LOL
This was pretty good. Liked Sixteen, Hip, and Take Me best.
A Jack White album of all time. It certainly has a place somewhere.
why is this on here
Very nice, to me sounds almost like an extension to White Stripes which really shouldn't be that surprising. I also had a pleasure of seeing Mr. White live many years ago in Brigthon so it's very nice to remember his sound, I really should go through his discography. Very nice modern take on blues rock, still sounds fresh. I will give it 3.5 on RYM but I will round up to 4 stars here, perhaps I was too generous with my rating for yesterday's album..
Not the best, but better than a lot
Good old rock !
This is a really hard album to rate. On one hand I like the Led Zeppelin influences and variety of the tracks, but on the other hand, there wasn’t much I could really get into. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was objectively good, but it didn't move me. I need to listen to this again. I don't know why it didn't appeal more to me.
Dawg I didn't even want to like this one and I did!! White has such a creative and unique sound that makes for a pleasant and enjoyable listening experience. Less specific songs stand out on this one, but a very fun ride from start to finish. Took a little longer to get into it, as opposed to being instant with the white stripes. Regardless, really enjoyed the experimentation and different sounds that this album provides. We're all Hip eponymous poor boys. Outro track is incredible wrap up that felt like our guy goofin around. wish I could give it 3.5
Actually really enjoyed this, not sure why there is so much hate for it in the reviews, but I am young and naive. Some great bluesy elements throughout, and very close in sound to The White Stripes (obvs) whom I am quite a big fan of. Very solid album this is!
I always want to like Jack White until I realize that I don’t. Or maybe the opposite? A whole album is too much.
Why is the cover so damn goth??? Anyway, pretty decent rock with blues influences. The white stripes were a big band, but I don't really see why this solo record of Jack is on this list. It isn't as good as the work he did in the White Stripes, but still decent for a solo debut album. 7.5/10
Great quintessential rock album, starts even pretty jazzy, which was a really cool sound I would've liked to hear more of, but the continued rock was also pretty good.
2012 - solo debut - blues rock / folk / country soul - received favorably; white stripes broke up in 2011; Raconteurs was '08; Dead Weather '09; not sure if it was me or the album but this took me 4 separate listens to get through the whole thing. I loved "Weep Themselves to Sleep" and "Hypocritical Kiss," and just insanely compelling riffs throughout. Happy I experienced it, definitely will listen again.
Bättre än White stripes i alla fall
Ganska bra. 3,5/5
This is not my favorite Jack White solo project, but it’s still damn good, and was one of my favorite college albums. I then saw Jack White play at Music Midtown in 2014 for my first ever rock show/festival and he cemented himself as one of my favorite musicians that night.
This album has eluded me, I say that because I've listened to his last two solo albums a lot since they've been out, this album sits somewhere near them in my personal ranking system, however I appreciate how different this album is from the albums I've listened to and from his White Stripe sound, bonus brownie points from me for all that he does for physical media
Not the album i would have picked out of Jack White's catalogue to go on a 'must listen to before you die' album list.
A couple of songs I didn't like but mostly it was good, and some great guitar tones. I would've loved it if I heard in in 2012.
I knew the singles but not the rest. I generally like but prefer the rock side over the blues and whatever. The slower piano songs I liked mixed in there but some of them got a little too honky tonk or whatever.
Never really got the love for Jack White. I found The White Stripes solid but just a bit unexciting and the odd track I’ve heard here and there from his solo career has seemed much the same. I did find myself impressed with the diversity of styles on here though. Definitely better than I had been expecting.
Great rock weird fusion album, a little techno and wah-y, fuckish rock, super cool.
Good album. Enjoyed it. Heard it before? ✅ Listen again? ✅ Rating out of ten? 7️⃣
3.5 rather, there’s some songs i quite liked but still overall can’t say it’s a 4
Entretenido y suena a rock antiguo.
Jack the white? Jack the fool!
The singles are awesome, but otherwise this is a just-okay Jack White project
As it was back in 2012, this remains too folksy and country-adjacent for me altogether. I definitely enjoy some songs individually, but this has always stood out as an unusual album within White's oeuvre, and--as his solo debut--I'm glad it wasn't reflective of what he would do the rest of his solo career.
His solo debut. I love all his stuff. This album has a lit of great, catchy songs to it.
Blunderbuss compares very favorably to the last two albums by The White Stripes. Apparently, the album took shape after a cancelled session with Wu-Tang's RZA. Some songs do feel like they have hip hop flair, namely "Missing Pieces" and "Freedom at 21." Those are my favorites on the album. It falls off a little for me in the second half, but is a strong solo outing for Mr. White.
now, i do have some familiarity with meg white's former husband and his penchant for concerning lyrical content regarding the women in his songs... but dang... is he okay?? has anyone checked up on him?? all jokes aside, wasn't really expecting much from mr formerly married to meg white, but i was pleasantly surprised by this album as someone who's usually skeptical of blues-y music. he manages to hit the parts i like about blues-y rock over and over again in a delightful and enchanting meander through fraught relationships. and that juxtaposition in and of itself is a fun part about this album too, now that i think about it. a solid 4 where i really thought this would be a 2 or 3, great stuff!! highlights - sixteen saltines, freedom at 21, love interruption, blunderbuss, weep themselves to sleep, on and on and on, take me with you when you go
Three White Stripes albums apparently weren't enough to satisfy the author's boner for Jack White, so he had to include his solo work as well. I'm not entirely convinced it was necessary, but whatever. It's quite a good album, I won't dispute it. Jack White's particular blend of blues and rock is always efficient, and there are some nice guitar riffs and super groovy songs here, with a post-punk / garage energy and even some soul and gospel influences. That being said, I'm still not a big fan of the vocals. Jack's voice is probably the main reason I could never completely get into the White Stripes, and working solo hasn't made him more palatable to me in that regard. I'm fine with a few songs, but a whole album was a bit much. Fortunately, it's not a very long record, and it didn't overstay its welcome. Bonus points for the album cover. Vultures are cool, and Jack looks like he saw The Crow one too many times and decided to one-up Brandon Lee. 5/10
I really enjoyed it, I think I like his singing. The first songs were reminsiscent of White Stripes/Black Keys while teh piano came into the mix. I particularly like "Weep Themselves to Sleep" which is mainly piano backed.
I find this album much better than anything The White Stripes ever did. After a few properly rocking opening tracks, though, it gets bogged down in a less satisfying direction, including the single, which might actually be the worst track on the album. Weep Themselves to Sleep wakes me up again, and I really enjoy its weird mix of sporadic choirs and heavy guitars. I also really like White’s rhythm guitar sound throughout. More importantly, I think the album is very well written overall, beyond the stylistic choices that don’t always work for me. I’ll definitely come back to it. What I’ve heard from White’s more recent stuff hasn’t interested me much, though, so I suspect my exploration of his work will remain fairly limited.
competent sure, but it's just homage wankery at the end of the day
Cool blues rocker, can hear a lot of Stones and Led Zeppelin influence and also the great blues artists that inspired them. Really just a White Stripes album with a full band though. It has some cool songs and Jack makes some cool sounds with the guitar. I would like to have this in my collection but I wouldn't consider it a masterpiece. I like the change at the end with the more moody blues songs, they were the most interesting.
His voice and style is so very Jack White that it's hard to differentiate between band/albums.
Creative to be sure, but I didn't really like it at all... getting prickly and rough vibes on it. All of the tracks came across as uniquely boring, consistent only in not piquing my interest.
not my cup of tea
Leuke rockmuziek. Vreemde gitaarrifjes, pop-melodietjes en goed gezongen.
