Album Summary

Paul Simon is the second solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Paul Simon. It was released in January 1972, nearly two years after he split up with longtime musical partner Art Garfunkel. His first solo album was recorded in England in 1965 but remained unreleased in the U.S. (except for a brief period in 1969) until 1981, when it appeared in the 5-LP Collected Works boxed set. Originally released on Columbia Records, Paul Simon was then issued under the Warner Bros. label and is now back with Columbia through Sony. The album topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Japan and Norway and reached No. 4 on the U.S. Billboard Pop Albums. In 1986 it was certified platinum.

I've had mixed mileage with the Simon and Garfunkel and Paul Simon albums, but thought this was lovely, and one of the better ones. The first half is particularly strong (including a couple tracks that must have been heavily on the Vampire Weekend household's playlist). The blues borrowings later on maybe a bit less successful for me. But enjoyed, and will go back to it.

Paul Simon is very easy to listen to. Apart from the hits, there are some good songs on here. Stuck between 3 & 4 stars; but feeling generous today.

Fun listen, pretty enjoyable. No songs really stood out to me enough to add them to my spotify, but I'll definitely check out more of his work after this.

Lots of nostalgia with this one. I always think of my mom singing Mother and Child Reunion when I hear it.

I’ve always lumped Paul in with Pete Townshend as the “better” (i.e., more pleasing to my ears) vocalist in their most famous bands. I’d also put Colin Moulding of XTC in that category, enjoying his voice better than Andy Partridge’s. This is a very fine debut album nicely distinguishing Paul as a solo artist vs. Simon and Garfunkel. Shocking that in the 1,001 albums we get this, Graceland, Hearts and Bones, but no There Goes Rhymin’ Simon, easily his best album. The quad version of this is quite nice.

Love this album and have played it many times over the years.

Loved it

A couple great songs, many good ones.

Easily my favorite Paul Simon solo album, it’s folky and catchy in the same way that the best Simon and Garfunkel albums are. Not every song has all of the sauce that I’m looking for, but Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard makes up for any misses on its own. Just a solid listen all around.

I don't think I have heard anything by Paul Simon I didn't like. This was no exception. I do feel, however, this wasn't his strongest work, though I don't think he can be blamed for not having his voice and sound fully fleshed out, as this was his first solo venture. This might be the only time I complain about an album being too short ⭐⭐⭐.75

Paul Simon, les mélodies, les accords sont chouettes. Ya pas vraiment de creux

this was such a nice listen

Me and Julio!

Easy listening

Hace un par de años escuché Graceland y fue una gran sorpresa. En este me pasó que esperaba mucho más, sobre todo por ser un disco que siempre aparece en los rankings. Not for me.

Paul Simon Paul Simon, paul simon simon paul simon paul; paul simon. Paul, Simon paul Simon Paul paul simon paul. Paul Simon.

He's a notorious music thief. Ask Los Lobos.

some great songs on here. obviously me and julio down by the schoolyard, mcdonough classic. duncan, run that body down, mother and child reunion added to the playlist :)

I like him but didn't like this album

Couple of big hits with Me and Julio and mother and child reunion. Overall good album. Good songwriting.

When it comes to Paul Simon's music, either being his solo material or with Garfunkel, what I enjoy the most about it is the subtle and gentle sound. I really like his very soft voice that maintains is pleasant tone even when he is projecting the most, and the instrumentation is always at par with the singing, most usually being acoustic guitars with some other instruments that fit nicely with the aesthetics (which happen to be quite a lot of them in this record). Whereas the music he composes I find to be beautiful, it never really reaches a state of pure satisfaction and enjoyment for me. The most upbeat and catchy moments this album offers are the closest to that level, but even then, I'm not incredibly crazy about it. In terms of ideas, I don't think there is much going on, being quite straightforward pop-folk / singer songwriter. In conclusion, an album that is nice to the ears, but I don't really find myself connecting with anything from it emotionally speaking.

Tässä kontekstissa ihan hyvä

16/10/2026 I didn't really go into this one with high expectations and I have left thinking this is an average album. Spotify listeners: 8.6 million

Very dated 70's singer-songwriter, but extremely inoffensive and occasionally catchy. Julio probably adds a star.

Was surprised by the album opening with a heavily Raggae-influenced track, but then the rest was standard boring Paul Simon folk-rock.

This is not as good as he will get, but it's darn good!

Amazing voice. Amazing storytelling. AMAZING fingerpicking. Amazing album. Favorite tracks: Duncan Peace Like a River I still remember the first time I heard Peace Like a River. Thank you Brennan and Parker

Starts with a reggae track? Some of it reminds me of bob dylan style folk music. 3.5

It's oke.

I feel like it's a kind of reggae version of Bob Dylan but if he knew how to sign Great discovery

(Light 8/10) A very nice folk pop album, it's got the all time classic "Me and Julio", and sees Paul playing around with different and eclectic style of music such as on the song "Mother and Child Reunion" and then dipping his toes into the blues on "Hobo's Blues". It's clear that without Art holding him back, he's able to fully bloom as a songwriter.

Pretty good!

13 Oct 2026 · 9/10 Truly such a beautiful album, so many incredible songs. Paul Simon is one of the greatest to ever do it. It isn't 10/10, only 9/10, because it needs a bit more 'variety' and isn't too innovative. Graceland, for example, is better and is a 10/10 (imo) because it achieves these as well. I will be listening again, this album is now part of my library!

Partly heard before Saved 4/11

Great record !

soft spoken fella

It's alright yaknow!

Love this one

Me and Julio is an all-timer, and the rest of this was pleasant but didn't blow me away. 3.5

Some of my faves are on here; lovely lovely listen.

Paul Simon’s Paul Simon is a five‑star album because it’s stitched directly into the fabric of my childhood. My dad had four eight‑tracks in his car—Carly Simon, Bread, the Oldsmobile International #4 mix, and this one—and on our 16‑hour drives in that red, wood‑paneled Oldsmobile up to Minot, he’d constantly shuffle between them. Paul Simon always felt like the calm center of that rotation: warm, melodic, steady, full of the kind of songwriting that makes the miles pass easier. The album’s blend of folk, Latin rhythms, and Simon’s easy conversational voice became the soundtrack of those trips—my dad driving, the road stretching forever, and these songs filling the car with something gentle and hopeful. It’s not just a great record; it’s a piece of my family’s history. That’s why it’s five stars.

Sounds like a Paul Simon record. 5 keepers in 11 (45%). 45

It was nice to listen to "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" again. And the other songs, though not as catchy, held their own.

had some nice moments, really cozy vibes with beautiful lyrics.

Man I’ve loved s&g since I was a kid so how have I never listened to this album?!? Maybe because my exposure to solo Simon was during his eighties resurgence when I fell for the cure, the smiths, et al. But this hit me lyrically, melodically, sonically. Listened several times yesterday- melodies from multiple songs still dancing in my head. Guess I gotta go down a Paul Simon hole and dammit I’m looking fwd to diving in.

So 70’s. A pleasant album.

not my cup of tea but it was so jolly

I’m always surprised by how much rhythmic experimentation solo Simon was doing right from the start. This album really get better and better the more I listen. 5 Boolean: True

respectable

Liked this a lot.

Like a male Norah jones with less oomph

The hits are great, the Hobo songs are fun, the rest is meh.

Grievous little annoyance. Also the lyrics are terrible.

yeah.. very ok

What a strange record. The first song is a strange reggae song (must have been popular at the time?) but the rest is just folk with a little bit of blues sprinkled in. The instrumentation is generally pretty good, but the songs just feel hollow. Can't put my finger on why, but my main theory is that it doesn't feel sincere. Really unsure what this record is doing here.

starts of kinda fun with a pop song infused with some reggae roots. It only really goes downhill from there towards more and more folk like songs. Nothing truly bad, not really all that good either.

Vibe relax. Simili country des années 70. Ressemble par moment à Neil Young.

Functional folk rock album. S and G was never my favourite, and this was mostly forgettable.

Paul Simon is always good. Not his best album but still.

MoAr LiKe PaUl SaLmOn - A Bear prolly

The only Paul Simon albums that absolutely need to be included in a list like this are Bridge over Troubled Water and Graceland. There is nothing special about this album (his first solo album being decent is no surprise, as he was the primary songwriter for Simon & Garfunkel). This album could easily have been replaced with There Goes Rhymin' Simon or Still Crazy After All These Years (each of those albums had multiple hits compared to just the one here). Furthermore, this list is pretty lackluster. There are huge omissions in the singer-songwriter genre, with zero albums from Jackson Browne, Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, or Gordon Lightfoot (among others), whereas Paul Simon gets multiple routine albums included.

Going through this project, it’s obvious that Simon & Garfunkel’s music—and Paul Simon’s solo stuff too—is very uneven. Every record has a couple of amazing songs, but on the flip side, there also some pretty poor attempts. This album averages out to about 3.4 points.

Paul got that shit on

Pretty bland for the most part. Dare I say it, it strays into folk territory which has been the bane of my 1001 Albums journey lately. Simon can obviously write a song or two, but the delivery is just a bit meh for me through most of this album. Probably deserved a 2 but I'm feeling generous today.

Didn't love this one — the guitar sounds and Reggae influences were fun, but most of the songs were a little dull and the singing often seemed flat.

shows signs of the masterpiece that is graceland

Proof that being Artless isn't the worst thing in the world. Big small Paul delivering some jaunty early American afrobeat nonsense with some other gentle but tightly composed folk ditties. Very, very enjoyable stuff, but not as good as the later more coherent Graceland, which would (will?) be a slapping 5 from me if or whenever it appears in this godforsaken list. But I remember enjoying this album greatly in my undergrad days, and boy howdy will I listen again.

A pretty decent folky album from Paul Simon. Me and Julio Down by the School Yard is probably the iconic track here and I’d say it’s deserving of that status. As others have pointed out, we definitely see some of the world music influences seeping in here that we’ll see more of later in his career. I’m not sure that there were too many more tracks that stood out by themselves, but it’s a nice collection of songs.

A great effort from Paul Simon in his first post-S&G solo album. It’s a slightly downcast and sombre affair, but we can already see evidence of his burgeoning interest in ‘world music’ in the reggae-infused opener ‘Mother and Child Reunion’, Andean woodwind on ‘Duncan’, and Latin percussion on ‘Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard’ (three of my favourite tracks). Many other songs are quite bluesy as well, such as ‘Everything Put Together Falls Apart’, ‘Peace Like a River’ and ‘Paranoia Blues’. It’s all consistently high-quality but lacks that extra something to take it to 5 stars for me.

This album was released in 1972 and is classified as folk rock, pop and blues. Reading the wiki, he was trying to get away from the Simon & Garfunkel sound so while there are still some ballads there are also up tempo and blues songs. But at the end of the day it's still Paul Simon! LOL There is no doubt about him being a great songwriter with complex chords and great lyrics. He's also a very good guitar player. I really think he's really talented but the ballads do start to sound the same which is expected for a guy with a guitar (like Dylan). Top songs for me are: Mother and Child Reunion - Reggae Duncan - Flute Simon and Garfunkel Run That Body Down Armistice Day - Blues Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard Peace Like a River

Incredible work Paul

What a fantastic album. It’s simple and happy, music doesn’t have to be anything more than that. Clear Brazilian influence and blues/folk as well. Some songs are like if Bob Dylan had a good singing voice

Okkkk Paul Duncan had some good flute action Run that body down, the most beautiful a doctors visit has ever sounded

Muy buen disco. Me gustó. No lo tenía para nada a Paul Simon. No sé por qué esperaba que no me guste.

Paul Simon gets his lyrics out of Bob Dylans wastebasket.

- Still think Simon's best music occurs when he is partnered with Garfunkel, but I am admittedly surprised by how much I liked a good deal of this. Simon and Garfunkel are typically pretty sobering, while this is much more upbeat. - Still has pretentious moments (for some reason starting "Everything Put Together Falls Apart" with "paraphernalia" really annoys me) and "political" moments that are pretty weak ("Armistice Day"), but tracks like "Me and Julio..." are legitimately fun and others like "Mother and Daughter Reunion" are compelling.

I enjoyed it. Lots of variety. You can see where the 80’s stuff came from

This is a nice album

Paul Simon's first attempt of stepping out of the shadow of his previous group is a respectable effort even if it doesn't reach the heights of the best Simon & Garfunkel records. You can hear Simon experimenting on the reggae flavoured opener "Mother And Child Reunion". We also get a blues song with "Paranoia Blues". Outside of these moments, a lot of this album sounds like Simon & Garfunkel without Garfunkel. Simon's songwriting make up for the loss of the harmonies. You could be mistaken for thinking that the breakout track "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard" was a Simon and Garfunkel song. This is a good folk record that's not going to change your life.

Está bien, pero tampoco me ha apasionado. Se deja escuchar.

It's ok but I don't like the reggae, gospel, country, and bluesy parts.

music for vampires.

It’s not the worst Paul Simon I’ve been subjected to but it still sucks a lot

Great songwriter and singer, even not being my kind of music.

This is hovering at a 2.5 for me. It’s not good, but it’s relatively inoffensive. It’s another artist that’s a “megastar” that I’m completely confused as to why. I’m 1040 albums into this thing and I’ve been subjected to way too many mediocre 70s albums, so say goodbye to that half star, Paul.

Me and Julio was the only song on here I knew. Since that song is awesome, probably should have listened to the rest sooner! What a fun album. Always keeps you on your toes. Paul Simon is such an underrated guitarist, oozes his own style. Shout out Duncan

Love the stylistic variety here from Mother and Child Reunion to jazzbo Run that Body Down to actually going and getting Stephane Grappelli to do a gypsy swing bit on Hobo's Blues. Obviously Me and Julio is one of the catchiest songs you'll find in the entire 1001 project. Overall a Good (if not great) Album lyrically I feel like this is second to some of his better S&G projects and Graceland.

Pretty clear transition album from the folk stylings of Simon & Garfunkel to his more diverse solo offerings, there are some good bops in here. Simon's a real pip (3.5)

THREE SONGS IN AND SO FAR I LOOOOVE HIS VOICE Idk but the quality of the recordings doesn't sound from 54 years ago... Run that body down hit hard for some reason...

Folksy, lots of stories to unravel: very Simon & Garfunkel-esque (duh) but in a pleasing way.

Perfect early morning album.

09/20 Pretty good

Absolute music legend. One of the purest voices in music history

Decent and chill, didn’t blow me away though outside of the obvious classic.

Certainly a great song writer and much more interesting and sophisticated than alot of formulaic music we get today. And alot of unique sound choice. Some of it wasn’t pleasing to my ears (maybe the slide on Paranoia blues and the guitar rattles on low notes on armistice day). Liked it but didn’t love it and not really much I’d feel the need to go back to. 3.25

The King of Corny returns! Lyrics are hilarious but I really dug this album. Close to Bridge of Troubled Water IMO. Lacks the big bangers to deserve a 5* but close... 4/5

Paul Simon became one of the most influential musicians of the last century despite looking exactly like the guy who should be doing your taxes. Mad respect.
