1001 Albums Summary

It has some highlights but is definitely weaker than Elephant and White Blood Cells. Still — the White Stripes will always have a high floor!

Absolute masterpiece. One of the pinnacles of British rock.

Okay garage rock, definitely solid enough but not on the Strokes/White Stripes level

I love Joni, but this is probably my least favorite from her classic era. Just a little too aimless and sleepy for me

Starting to realize I’m just not a Leonard Cohen guy lol

🤘🤘

Undeniable highlights but VERY bloated

Probably the weakest of the 3 90s Massive albums, but still really solid. The title track is absolutely gorgeous

It’s the White Album for Gen X. Sure, it’s a little bloated, but it’s shocking how little filler there is for a 2 HOUR ALBUM. Mid 90s Billy Corgan really had the juice

🤘💀

Not my thing, but I respect it

A little frontloaded and cheesy, but still a total blast all these years later!

Still not a big jazz guy but this undeniable

It’s weird how under-discussed this album is nowadays! It deserves just as much love as the Beatles’ and Stones’ and Jimi’s classics. Banger after banger after banger

A masterpiece. Legitimately a top-10 album of all time for me. Catch me on the right day and I’d call it the greatest British album ever made.

Undeniable highlights, but it is definitely hit and miss.

Hit and miss but the hits are PERFECT

Who are the people out here giving this less than 4 stars?? We need to have a sit down

Banger after banger after banger. Just pure silliness and joy!

I like the songs individually, but as a 50+ minute listen it gets a bit repetitive tbh.

Half interesting sophisti-pop/new wave, half super bland yuppie music (minus the bulletproof hooks of something like “Valerie” or “Higher Love”)

I love Bjork’s 90s albums, but this kind of just felt like a slog for me. Sorry — I just don’t have the patience for an album of 6+ minute ballads with no hooks!

Interesting but not remotely entertaining for me

It’s second-tier REM for sure, but that’s still better than most bands’ top tier! A great transitional work from their obtuse jangly 80s stuff to their more widescreen 90s albums. (Also, “Stand” is a banger and I won’t accept any slander)

Surprised I didn’t love this, since I’m a big Blur fan. But idk…it was maybe a bit *too* pastoral and gentle for me. Good songwriting though!

Nope I’m good. Don’t need reheated middle-aged white guy blues

It’s a bit overlong, but a ton of fun! Would’ve been a 5-star album if it was just the best 45 minutes or so

I wish I liked it more! I know how important it is, it just didn’t fully grab me. Maybe I just needed to be there in 1977 lol

🤘🤘🤘

I bet this would go SO hard at the planetarium

Love the fuller songs, not so much the little interludes

Sadly not my thing

I could understand including American Pie *the song* in a list of 1001 songs you must hear. Not my favorite, but it’s a very important, very iconic tune. But the whole ALBUM? Hell nah. This thing is just bland early 70s easy listening. The kind of Boomer music that’s rightfully been forgotten.

Very cool background music

…wait, do I like prog rock

The beats are fun and the flows are solid, but idk about some of these lyrics, man. My least favorite thing about the backpack rap era is how way too many songs are just dissing other, more popular rappers. And not even in a fun way! It sounds like scolding!

A little long and preachy, but I do enjoy some righteously angry Public Enemy-style rap. (Just in smaller doses!)

Probably my favorite Stevie album! So much sonic variety, so many bangers and gorgeous ballads. Living For the City may be his best song!

Maybe my favorite Stones album?? Tons of variety, from lowkey gorgeous ballads to fiery rockers to some groovy jam sessions.

I enjoy Sex on Fire and Use Somebody as much as the next millennial, but MAN is the rest of this album a bore. Just feels like generic “rock” without any excitement.

Not normally my kind of thing, but there are some great tunes in here

The first half of this album is phenomenal, top-tier Lana. It’s a shame the second half is so bland and forgettable!

I feel bad giving this such a low rating — but it’s just hard for me to get excited about rock music *this* old school and primitive. Little Richard was an insanely talented dude who was so, so important to music history, but I have no desire to listen to all of these songs back-to-back-to-back. I’d rather watch a live concert video of him doing his thing!

Fairly boring, sorry

Cool vibe, but mostly missing the great songwriting. but Last Junkie is a banger

Kind of a weird pick for this list. It’s a typical “pretty good follow up to a classic” record. Hello is an absolute monster though — love that song!

Mmmmm now that’s smooth

The singles are awesome, but otherwise this is a just-okay Jack White project

God I love this crazy-ass album. It’s not technically the *best* Fleetwood Mac album (Rumours is obviously more consistently great), but it’s my favorite. I love how bonkers it is, especially Lindsey Buckingham’s jittery, coked-out contributions. It feels like being violently jolted between the smoothest 70s AM rock and the most paranoid post-punk. It’s maybe the blankest check in classic rock history?

Not something I’m going to listen to on the regular but it’s fun for what it is!

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this! I’m really not a metal guy (especially the really really heavy stuff) so I was nervous for this one, but I loved just how goofy it was! And no Cookie Monster vocals!!

Not my favorite Neil album but it’s got some bangers! I love the jammy, country-rock nature of it

Dylan isn’t my favorite, but there are some undeniable tunes here. Hard Rain in particular is fantastic.

I just don’t think I’ll ever really enjoy this band. Sorry! It’s just so … placid?

I’m not into jam band music or the Dead really at all, but I’m glad it exists!

One of the greatest albums of all time. Effortlessly cool, impossibly catchy, and rocks harder than its slacker reputation suggests. Arguably THE defining indie rock record, yet it doesn’t feel like homework to listen to. It’s still a total blast!

Not my favorite Stones album but it’s obviously a classic! “Sway” and “Can You Hear Me Knocking” in particular are greats

This album is ridiculous and goofy and overwrought and I love it anyway. It’s the album that finally got me to love Pink Floyd, probably because of how bombastic and over-the-top it is. “I know writers who use subtlety and they’re all COWARDS” - Roger Waters, probably
