Elephant
The White StripesNice. Even if you skip "seven nation army", it's a very solid album.
Nice. Even if you skip "seven nation army", it's a very solid album.
Didn't care for Scott 2, also didn't care for Scott 4. Maybe Scott 3 is the sweet spot?
great, never listened to the whole album cover to cover. Hopefully this is an indication of the 1001 list trending in the right direction.
Sort of a Nirvana "Bleach" vibe.
Not my style, but smoooth....
Not my cup o tea. Reminds me of "the cure" but not a fan of the vocals.
Solid. I like "The Wall" better, but still very much a classic album.
I've tried to listen to this album before... it seems like something I "should" like, but I just can't get into it. I listened to it again, and it again just became non-descript background music... nothing particularly memorable, except maybe the "I used to wait" song from that old HTML5 chrome project...
sounds just like early Primus... and then I remembered he is the voice of Tommy the Cat! But ooof... there are apparently 5 "tom waits" albums in this list meanwhile Madonna, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Eagles, Chili Peppers all only have TWO.
Bartering Lines was an interesting tune. Shakedown on 9th had White Stripes vibes
Ahhh... Kanye before falling off the deep end. I am not the target audience but can appreciate the solid beats.
this seems like something I would have at least listened to once back in the day, but this is the first time hearing them. Maybe I got my fill of this sub-genre from "Hot Hot Heat" instead? Either way, 3 stars.
this list has been a bit "brit" heavy so far.
walk on the wild side
Groovy man!
Look, I appreciate David Bowie, the "Hunky Dory" album is terrific. But there is no reason for him to have NINE albums in this list. Smh... Girl Loves Me is catchy
Several of the songs had Johnny Cash vibes. Born Under A Bad Sign and I Sleep Alone were not bad
Finally an album worthy of being on the 5-star list. Great sounding record... cleaner then most modern records. Haunting Vocals and catchy riffs. Dreams, Never Going back Again, The Chain, GoldDust Woman all top tier songs.
I liked her work on the Magnolia soundtrack, but this album was not my thing.
classic tunes we have all heard somewhere
"Hobo's Meditation" reminded me of "sad songs and waltzes" (Willie Nelson / Cake).
So we are putting one-hit-wonders on the list now? Oh wait, the are from London... Anyway, I actually enjoyed this album more then I though I would, but probably won't listen to again.
pretty good for disco!
Forget the car, "The dude" just wants his Creedence tapes back. You had me at track 1 "Born On The Bayou".
WTF is this trash? First thing that comes to mind is that Family Guy episode where they parody Randy Newman singing about eating an apple. But seriously, this is God awful. 0 stars, would not recommend
no major stand outs for me, but not bad
I surprisingly enjoyed this one. Rounded up to a 4 star
everyone knows the song from the first 6 notes. Lyrics are creepy AF but aside from that, solid album.
started out solid, better then expected. But by the end (last 3 or so songs) it was nails on a chalkboard.
Even by "hair metal" standards, Axl's vocals are abrasive, and that's being polite. I realize I am in the minority here, but I never got in to GnR and re-listening to this album only solidified this position. It's too bad because the rest of the band is great.
Recognizable tunes. Deserves to be on the list, but not my style.
Never hear them or even knew they existed. Not terrible, with a few more listens might grow on me. Though not sure why it's on this list....
not my thing, but solid beats
fun show!
Smooth like butter
Wow... this is the first album on the list I couldn't finish. This is truly terrible.
Solid, probably only my 3rd favorite Zeppelin album, but far better then 90% of the other stuff we have seen from this list so far.
Belongs on this list, but no my thing.
I actually got into this... packed with hits that everyone knows. It also got me thinking "why do I enjoy this yet despise Guns and Roses despite a similar vocal profile?". I think partly because the overall sound of AC/DC seems to be a little lower/heavier whereas GnR tends to lean higher/screechier. I also feel like Brian Johnson sings in support/service of the song... whereas Axl sings because he wants to BE the song.
Never heard this band before... can't yet make my mind up if I like it or not. Might need to listen again and possibly track down some of their other albums. All in all, glad it was on the list to add something "new" to try.
great, never listened to the whole album cover to cover. Hopefully this is an indication of the 1001 list trending in the right direction.
fine, not my thing. little on the sleepy side
felt weird but not in a good way. not my thing
Awesome. Great album
It's fine
Blah. Makes me cring to think of the albums that didn't make it on the list because they chose to put this on on instead
nice... hadn't listed to this album before.
claim to fame "peaked at 27 on the Norwegian Albums chart in 2000", but it's a UK group so better throw it on the list I guess??
I enjoyed it more then expected. The last 2 or 3 songs got a little "screechy" but all in all, a worthwhile listen.
has it's moments, certainly some good grooves
Easy to see why its popular. First half of the tracks seem solid and catchy. but back half of the album seems to ramble on
kind of interesting, glad it was on the list and worth a listen, but probably not going to listen again.
not too bad! I think Pixies should only have 1 album on the list, and this would be a solid submission.
It's like a soundtrack from a bad musical you were forced to watch in middle-school. I don't get it.
Top Tier start to finish. Fun listening all the way through again. Fell on Black Days, the day I tried to live, and of course black hole sun outstanding. Turn it up to fully feel the heavy guitar and bass with Chris's vocals. In my top 10.
Was thinking "boy, they sound familiar" but chalked it up to sounding basically like every other 80s synth band. Then "Don't You Want Me " came on and bingo. Still, it's a style of music that has not aged well. Tears for Fears and Depeche mode are likely the only exceptions.
Not my thing... the "dah-huh-uh" vocals becomes a distracting gimmick quick.
I like Baptisim and 5 better then this albun, but it's still good. Let Love Rule, Cab Driver are both solid.
it's like a bi-polar album, alternating between rockin hits and Michael Bolton type fluff. Hotel California - rocking New kid in Town - fluff Life in the fast lane - rocking wasted time - fluff victim of love - rocking rest of album - fluff
so less than 60 albums in and this is already the 2nd repeat artist. Didn't care for it as much as the previous entry "lets get it on".
somewhat interesting at times.... but I don't think it even deserves to be on the list of top 100 albums released in 1994, let alone on any sort of all time list. There was just way to much other better music coming out in that era to really call this a "must listen".
solid entry
I was gearing up for another "WTF is with all this UK band crap" but I actually got into this one.
Listen to "Valentine's Day" and then listen to "Distance Voices" by Bush (on razorblade suitcase). crazy similar.
Not the worst album on the list, but I'm all set on this one...
it was hit and miss, but mostly miss.
it was hit and miss, but mostly miss.
unremarkable
Not my thing, but easy to see the radio friendly appeal.
glad to have a zappa record on the list. few catchy toons, Trouble every day probably favorite.
good chillin outside on a fall night kind of music
solid
Fatboy Slim this is not. But last few tracks weren't terrible.
Phew, a delicious treat to save me from the sub-par British crap this list seems to be littered with. Solid start to finish, A+
odd entry. All Tomorrow's Parties has "lime in the coconut" vibes. Not the worst album on this list.
Great album. Originally owned this on CASSETTE TAPE! Vedder is still a top notch frontman... swinging from rafters 50ft in the air, solid MTV unplugged performance, or even now still playing 2-3hr (and 2-3 bottle of wine) shows.
well, I like this one better then the "mothers of invention" that was in the list earlier. But really don't see the need for more then 1 "frank zappa" album to be in the list. Willie the Pimp had a catchy lil beat.
solid entry. several tunes we have all heard at least once. The over-emphasis of the last syllable of every single word sung does wear thin after a while.
"heaps of sheeps" started out OK, but damn... "the dutchess" spiraled into terrible noise.
Nice entry
they do a mean cover of the Big Mouth Billy Bass "take me to the river" song. :)
Not bad, pleasantly surprised. My prior exposure to massive attack was limited to Angel on the "Snatch" soundtrack.
never heard of them before. It's interesting... clean catchy riffs. vocal style is very dated at this point so not something I am likely to listen to again. Would be super interesting to hear Dexter Holland from The Offspring sing vocals in a modern remake. Listen to "Shot By Both Sides" and tell me that couldn't be an Offspring song...
it's like 80s pirate music? not sure about this one. again, not the worst thing on the list... and has some potentially catchy tunes. Not the style of music I would get into today, but I could see modern bands covering some of this and it sounding good.
smooth
solid entry, catchy beats. Is there a version without all the "talking" inbetween tracks? kind of kills the vibe each song works so hard to build
?
ok, some solid "chill hop" tunes here
Give me a Leonard Cohen after-world... So I can sigh eternally
drank 6 bush lights, doubled the denim in my wardrobe, and started rebuilding the Baltimore bridge before the album was done.
Not a fan of this one.
also not terrible. modern production quality certainly helps
classic tunes, certainly an album that belongs on the list. not my style, but can appreciate it
The language is a barrier, not as terrible as expected. "La musique adoucit les moeurs" was catchy.
Solid entry
i was prepared for "terrible", so pleasantly surprised to hear "pretty OK".
not my thing... if I wanted something like this, I'd listen to the Cure instead
I appreciate the variety that this album brings to the list. I don't see this going into my playlist rotation, but a fine entry none the less
many songs on here we have all heard and often feel "over played", but i'll say, even as a 40 year old album, it holds up really well. great riffs, catchy tunes, quality recording. Vocals aren't over the top/abrasive like you would find on many other bands of this vintage. all in all, much more fun to listen to then I expected.
hard one to put my finger on, sort of all over the place. Ranging from solid to fluffy. Several tracks have heard many times before, notably on The Virgin Suicides soundtrack.
not my style but obviously very talented at what she does.
Nice. Even if you skip "seven nation army", it's a very solid album.
Less funny version of Weird Al.
prefer the Marilyn Mason version :)
Never heard of them before, but found myself really getting into this one, has a vibe similar to "pretty lights".
Not nearly as goofy as I thought it would be. Obviously dated but a worthy entry on the list
solid background tunes
not my thing... always sounded like soundtrack music for 60's movies, and then I realized it was in fact music from soundtracks of the 60s
Kept thinking "this band sounds just like another band from that era". At first I was thinking of Tom Petty "don't do me like that", but turns out I was actually thinking of the songs JailBreak and The Boys are Back In town and didn't realize who sung them. So there... Thin Lizzy sounds just like the band Thin Lizzy. #HotTake
odd choice... when the album's only claim to fame is being on this list, doesn't really add up. Not bad though, just doesn't belong on the list.
never actually listed to this bad before, which is odd because it seems right up my ally. All in all, pretty decent. I'm sure I would like it more now had I listed to it back in the late 90s when first released.
pleasantly surprised. totally decent.
good entry, not something I'm likely to listen to again but not objectionable.
nice background music
head-banging fun, solid entry
Solid entry, prefer some of Beck's other albums over this one, but still good stuff.
back to back Beck! Though I prefer Odelay better then this one... actually prefer most of Beck's albums over this one. Always seemed strange that "sea change" seemed to be favored by the critics but my least favorite.
nothing objectionable. Night Train was the standout for me.
Not sure what to make of this... certainly different and not what you would think a "1978" would sound like. Ultimately not something I'm likely to listen to again but OK with it being on the list.
don't think I've ever actually listened to Bjork. Can't say I am a fan. "One Day" was ok but "Like Someone in Love" was an especially painful listen.
back half of the album was fun. "Gut Feeling" of course from "the life aquatic".
interesting album, only 4 tracks? smooth beats.
lovely hotel lobby music :)
great entry... best pumpkins album. Fun listening two all the way through again. Even the less popular songs have some great moments/riffs. Playing the air piano along with the title track, middle of "An Ode to No One", the gritty effects on "love", the awesome build up in "where boys fear to tread"
Didn't care for Scott 2, also didn't care for Scott 4. Maybe Scott 3 is the sweet spot?
it was fine, a little rough around the edges. prefer the newer stuff.
"I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby Come with me Friday, don't say maybe I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you"
Bow-chica-bow SHAFT
A fine entry but not something I would listen to again
fun entry
hadn't listed to before, immediately thought of early RHCP albums, which turns out were heavily influenced by Grandmaster Flash.
sound is all over the place. can't get any traction on this one... pass.
certainly packed full of hits that we have all heard. Many of the songs do tend to blend together and the high pitch "yee-ah!" wears thin.
good listen, a lot of hits all on the same album
surprisingly decent. maybe the first album on the list that I haven't listed to before but would absolutely listen to again.
solid entry
while not exactly my type of music, solid beats, fun samples weaved in, etc. Obvious seismic impact on the music scene, solid entry on the list
not bad, similar vibe to "pretty lights"
meh, pass
"fat of the land" is the album that should be on the list, but this was a good listen.
solid entry
pass. basically a cover band album from the 80s? I don't get it.
Ooof, 3rd dud in a row.
wide range of sound on this one... corpus christi to eternal life is two opposite ends of the spectrum.
It's like Jack White meets Elvis?
Pass. Wilmot was a somewhat fun track, and the album does get better as it goes along, but wayyy to much garbage cluttering the little that could be considered good.
pass more british crap. "Grounds For Divorce" had potential but the lyrics are too wordy
pass. smoke on the water or bust for me
Fun album, not sure we need 2+ AC/DC albums on the list, but it was enjoyable.
solid entry to the list. couple of tunes we have all heard
this one grew on me, actually enjoyed it. this might be the first album on the list I had never heard of before that I might actually purchase! Only took 151 days before finding one....
the comments on the "roots, bloody roots" are worth an extra star alone.
It's Elvis!
not at all what I was expecting, but rather enjoyed it.
Ziggy Stardust and Suffragette City are great tracks. I'm "meh-" on the rest of the album.
this was awful, what the hell is this doing on the list?
"was universally panned in the United States, where it failed to chart" ... yeah, no kidding. It's terrible!
Solid entry! Lullyby, pictures of you, and Love Song are all great. 4.5 stars... rounding up mostly because of all the junk that litters this list.
(1) - in my mind Sammy Hagar sung "cult of personality". (2) - similar sound to early RHCP (3) - worth being on the list but not my thing
deserves to be on the list, but not my thing. She talks too much.
super weird choice. This bad has 60 albums and this is the one they choose for the list?
