We're Only In It For The Money
The Mothers Of InventionMaybe when this came out it was earth shattering and cool and trippy. Now it just sucks.
Maybe when this came out it was earth shattering and cool and trippy. Now it just sucks.
Part of what made me love this was maybe the surprise? But it was great and I'm definitely going to listen to it again. And the spotify radio station that played at the end was freaking bitching.
All reviews from anybody who didn't give this album a 5 should be hidden from the site since they clearly are not mentally capable.
Loved it, although I will admit that I probably would have loved anyy album after riding 15 inches of blower pow in jackson hole
I respect that this is clearly a foundation that a lot of amazing hip hop evolved from, but it was a tough listen
98/100
I've never actually really listened to Otis Redding and wow have I been missing out. Never too late to start though!
There’s a J Cole and an MJ Cole? Regardless, not my type of shit
If I was feeling a lot more aggressive when I listened I think it would have gotten a 4 from me, just wasn't the perfect mood for the time and place.
Really loved this album. Not quite a 5, but close
Meh, not horrible not great
Johnny cash live at any prison is an automatic 5
In college, I went to a house show at "The Treehouse". The house had an actual living tree growing through the middle of it. That's irrelevant to this rating but objectively very cool. At the end of the night, a dude played a set that largely consisted of the automated voice from the New Jersey Turnpike Authority being played over and over on repeat with some random beeps and boops thrown in. It was hands down the worst sound I have ever listened to and I will never forget it. Now back to this album... About 16 minutes into the first song, a horrible combination or sirens and other stressful beeping started. I actually could not make it through to the end of the song because it was so terrible and it reminded me of that troubled young man who loved the New Jersey Turnpike Authority too much. The rest of the songs were not nearly as offensive but they were basically just a crappy version of Explosions in the Sky.
Some decent songs, some bad ones. Didn't have a great flow to it, I won't be going back to this album.
Maybe if I was 90 I’d appreciate it more
I really enjoyed this album and the genre isn't one I usually love so even though my enjoyment of it was probably only a 4/5, I will give it a 5 given that it had to work against my own taste.
I got yelled at multiple times by Angelina for tapping my foot too much, 5!!!
None of the songs really stood out but I was jamming. Especially tutti frutti
I don't even really like rap anymore but this album is unreal. I had even just listened to it within the last month to try to prove to Stijn that that wyclef jean album couldn't possibly be a 5 and on the same level. Amazing both times.
I love this band. I was in such a shit mood when I started the album, by the time Money for Nothing was playing I was on top of the world. It’s literally impossible to listen to that song and feel down.
Couldn't get through it. I'm sure it's an important album and well regarded in it's genre but listening felt like a chore. Most bored I have been all week, and I had to watch the bachelor finale...
The greatness of Mr blue sky almost brought me to a 5 but overall really great listen
Overall, great album that I have heard some of the more popular ones but never listened to the whole thing. If I was high at the beach it would definitely be a 5, at my desk at work it is only a 4.
Inoffensive but also not good
Not exactly my jam and was very hard to actively listen to but once I spaced out and it was just in the background it wasn't actively painful to my ears.
I have always loved Cat Stevens, had never listened to the full album but I loved it.
Overall, I really enjoyed it. It immediately made me want to play Tony Hawk Pro Skater which is about as high a compliment I can give. Could have done with a few less songs but great listen.
I’m a big lyrics guy so not being able to understand the lyrics is definitely a hit for me. Overall decent but all sounded the same (probably because I couldn’t understand the words) and got bored and didn’t finish. One thing I’m noticing is that my mood and setting really changes how I feel about the album. I’m going to start including them in the reviews for further context. For instance, if I was in Puerto Rico at a bar with everyone dancing this might be a 5, however it was: Mood: annoyed Setting: at my desk at work
Boring. It wasn't offensive to listen to in any way and if it was on in the background you wouldn't complain, but it certainly didn't hook me at all. Mood when starting: Neutral Setting: Walking to get a burrito then eating said burrito then realizing I have an unwatched episode of Shogun which will surely be way more interesting than this and bailing on the album.
If I had to rate this album in 2017 sitting high in my freshman dorm room when I initially fell in love with Radiohead, it would definitely get a 5. I still listen to some of my favorite songs, but haven't listened to this or Kid A in their entirety in quite a while. I still absolutely love Radiohead but I wasn't connecting to the entire album as much as I had in the past. That said, I listened to No Surprises and Karma Police like 5 more times after the album. Mood when starting: tired, wanting to be home Setting: driving in the rain late night to get back from a long family dinner
Mood: grimy Setting: cleaning the house I had obviously heard Blister In The Sun before. I expected the album to seriously drop off after starting with that. However, I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed almost all of the songs.
Mood: delightful Setting: biking on a beautiful day to the climbing gym then climbing For some reason, I thought The Police were a lot more punk and was excited for that. Maybe it was more groundbreaking in it's day, but nothing really stood out to me about them. Overall, decent, wish they were a little grimier.
Mood: 6/10 Setting: cooking dinner I thought the guitar and overall music itself was pretty hype, but the screaming was a bit much for me. I think if there was genuinely no singing at all I would have liked it a lot more
Mood: Tired after long weekend Setting: Getting ready to go see a musical which seemed a good time to listen to this Very unique. I kinda loved it but at the same time I couldn't stand listening to it anymore? I don't really know where that leaves me. I don't think I will ever listen to it again, but I will remember its strangeness fondly.
The first song is a really tough start to the album. At least lube me up before exposing me to 6 minutes of unpleasant grinding/mechanic/whatever the fuck those are sounds. It doesn't get much better from there. All of my knowledge about Joy Division comes from the song "Lets Dance to Joy Division" by The Wombats. This is not making me want to dance at all... This actually made me go listen to that song again and I actually think that's the point? Is that song making fun of Joy Division? Either way, this album didn't do it for me.
Mood: Slightly positive, 6/10 Setting: Driving home from my parents house Very peaceful. It even cured my road rage for the brief 28 minutes it took for the entire album. Side note: I love the short little albums, wish people did that more. All the songs were great, although I thought they sounded very similar and blended together which I why I am only giving it a 4. I should have been listening to more Nick Drake my whole life, he really puts ya at ease.
Mood: Very peaceful (had just listened to the Nick Drake album) Setting: Still driving home from my parents house I've never actually listened to Common before. I was not expecting to love this, especially having just listened to Nick Drake right before but I actually thought this was very solid.
Didn't have time for this album like I didn't have time for this review so I am half assing both. Not meant to be listened to while sitting at your desk working.
Mood: Chillin Setting: Around the house I actually really enjoyed this band's sound. None of the songs stood out super well for me but I was really digging it.
Mood: a little down Setting: puttering around in the morning after waking up Sometimes an album meets you right where you're at for any given moment. I don't think I will ever listen to this album all the way through again. That said, it was perfect for this morning. I am giving it a 4 but it was very close to a 5.
Mood: Friday afternoon Setting: Finishing up the work day I enjoyed it decently. I never have really listened to Prince other than a couple hits but I felt a little hard-done by listening to a Prince album and not getting to hear Purple Rain? That seems unfair. I neither loved nor hated this album, so solid 3 but closer to 4 than to 2.
Mood: excellent Setting: biking for fun Had never actually listened to this album although had heard a couple of the more popular songs. Great stuff overall
Mood: excellent Setting: 74 degrees, biking along the Esplanade instead of working I listened to this right after I listened to the Tribe album which was a cool combo. Another classic hip hop album I had never listened to but thoroughly enjoyed. I don't know if I would really go back to this album since I would never choose a hip hop album to listen to out of everything, but I am really glad I listened. Are there any modern rappers anywhere near this good anymore? Maybe that's why I stopped listening to rap...
Mood: neutral+ Setting: working I had never heard of this artist. The first 10 seconds I was thinking "Oh God this album is going to be a chore." However by the end of the first song I was totally sold. Pretty unique sounding, I enjoyed it.
Great singer, a little slow for me
Love me some Coldplay...
Mood: terrible Setting: FUCKING DISHES AGAIN Not bad, didn't really connect with it. I actually really like another Ryan Adams album (the one with him lying down smoking a cigarette on the cover) but this one didn't have that same magic.
Hmm. I liked the old time-y vibe but the music itself wasn't inspiring me.
Not my jam but not distasteful
Angelina's uncle unexpectedly died today which does not put one in a particularly sensual mood. Under better circumstances I would give it a 5, but today it's only a 4.
I enjoyed learning about Mister Kelly's. Wish we still had cool iconic stuff like that. Mister Kelly gets a 5/5. The album was like peaceful background music you would hear at a coffee shop which was pleasant but didn't make me feel inspired.
Split between a 3 and a 4 but I'm in a benevolent mood. Overall, cool. Cream is a dope band name
I can't quite give it a 4 but I want to.
Some of the songs I absolutely love. There are some absolute classics in there I have had saved for years. Very good album, not quite great. I did really enjoy the song about the wasp. Side note: it really annoyed me how the songs weren't capitalized consistently.
That’s fucking rock and roll boys
Word
The Smiths are rad. This was rad.
I liked the album. I did not make it all the way through. 40 songs, 2.5 hours long? That's simply too long for an album. I liked it a 4, but since I couldn't make it through the whole thing I am deducting them for that. I'm sorry but come on. Not even their own mothers listened to the whole album probably.
I did not expect to like this album that much. Boy was I wrong. I guess there's a reason she's such an icon. This album was killer.
I'm having a hard time because I loved this album and want to give it a 5. However, it is not as good as London Calling which is obviously a 5 which then makes me think how can this be a 5 if something is much better is also a 5. Therefore a am giving it a 4 but a high 4.
Maybe when this came out it was earth shattering and cool and trippy. Now it just sucks.
Not inspiring. Borderline 2
At first I was really liking it, got far too beep boopy by the end though. BEEP BOOP BOOP BEEP BAP OONTZ
Love me some Bobby D. This isn’t his best album but it’s good and I enjoyed it throughout.
The first half was electric. Some of the later songs were a little slow for my liking but overall a great listen.
Classic
I just hate jazz I guess because I am struggling to fully appreciate this.
BANGERS ONLY
Couldn't make it through the whole thing. It's pretty peaceful but just felt so repetitive with all the sitar-ing. I'm sure if I was sitting in "the Valley" listening to this man play this I would be totally entranced, but it feels like you need to be in the right time and place for this one.
Really loved the first half, lost a little steam at the end but I was vibing overall
I remember liking this a lot more as an angsty teen when Nirvana was all the rage and MTV was rad. Heart Shaped Box is obviously an all time classic, but the rest wasn't quite doing it for me. I love the mood, but the album itself didn't quite hold up for me.
That was a bitchin' album
I sort of felt like I was listening to the Beatles but then also Led Zeppelin? Pretty rad overall
Not quite as good as the other album but still amazing. Mark Knopfler really shreds
Didn’t expect to like this as much as I did
I guess maybe I'm a swiftie? Idk I thought it was pretty good. Dragged on a bit at the end but I enjoyed most of the songs.
Pretty catchy but didn’t blow me away
Overall, it was fine but didn't inspire me. Definitely a couple jams but the rest was meh. Normally I would give a 3, but I am insulted by the insinuation that I can't handle "this jelly." They don't know me!
I feel like I give so many albums a 3. I guess it's just my standard rating for "don't love it and won't listen to it again but it wasn't terrible"
Okay Tina. OKAY TINA!
Overall very rad. REALLY wish this was a 10 point scale. Cant quite give it a 5 but I really enjoyed it.
The first time I listened was kind of disjointed since I kept having to pause and I didn't love it. I went back and listened again all together and it really worked a lot better for me.
Enjoyable album but doesn't reach the threshold for greatness that is a 5. Now it did immediately make me listen to Born in the USA. Now that's a 5.
Another borderline 5 for me. I know this is a classic album and it was very pleasant. I would happily listen again but won't go out of my way to search it out.
Part of what made me love this was maybe the surprise? But it was great and I'm definitely going to listen to it again. And the spotify radio station that played at the end was freaking bitching.
Great name. Not as good music but not awful.
I haven't given a 1 out yet but it's finally time. That was truly fucking terrible. Whoever put it on this list... why???
Not generally my style but I greatly enjoyed it. Tiger in the Trunk or whatever it was called was really speaking to me.
My reviews are lame these days. But I really dug this.
As a person who had never listened to an Iron Maiden album, when I first started this album I wasn't super into it. By the end, I was loving the energy and super into it. I went ahead and listened to it a second time and it kept growing on me. I think if I listened a 3rd time I would give it a 5.
Life doesn't get much better than listening to this album and playing the new wow expansion. Epic!
Lame review. Not a lame album.
Not that cool, all sort of blended in and was fine but not displeasing
A couple songs I already had saved that I really loved, the rest was a little out there for me.
I actually really enjoyed what I listened to but... 47 songs? Would be a 4 but for that and the fact I can't make it through in under 2 hours it gets a downgrade.
All downhill after track one. It's not offensive, but not inspiring either.
I've listened to a lot of Radiohead in my life and never listened to this album fully through. There's a good reason it turns out. Definitely the least enjoyable Radiohead album I've listened to. Not terrible but how did this make it on the list??
I was entranced with Stijn's review. I was excited to listen to the album. But then I listened to it. Guess I had to be in that tent as a young impressionable kid... The tents in my area were listening to Green Day and RHCP.
Extremely catchy. I had never listened to a Madonna album before. Like a Prayer is an absolute banger. The rest of the album falls off a little but still really enjoyable.
Pretty repetitive at times but I don't mind it? Good music to work to. I have always absolutely loved that song "All My Friends"
It was all kind of a blur. I liked it generally but not too much jumped out at me and re-engaged my attention.
If your album has only one really good song, don't put it first. Then the rest of it just is a disappointment compared to that first one. That's been the case for like 40 of these albums, this is no different.
I am biased because I absolutely love the Gorillaz. This is not their best album and still a great listen. Clint Eastwood is one of my all time favorite songs.
This album fucking rocks. Not sure there's a single weak track? The only thing that could make this album better is if I had a pack of smokes right now. Might go buy some Lucky Strikes tonight...
I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't this. The album cover looked really modern for how old it is. Really liked her sound.
I'm in love with Massachusetts! Great start to the album. I liked the overall sound and vibe and loving Massachusetts-ness of it. Something about the overall lyrics makes me think he might be kind of a creeper? But then I looked him up on Wikipedia and he has a masonry business where he makes pizza ovens which seems pretty rad so he's probably a cool dude.
After the first minute of this album I thought I was going to hate it but ended up really into it. I wasn't listening super well but found it enjoyable. Kit has got me paying way more attention to album covers than I ever have and this one is very provocative, I like it.
I should really listen to more Neil Young. Every time I listen to him I really like it. This isn't his best album ever but I do love his general sound.
When I saw this album I was immediately furious. How could they pick this over Pure Heroine??? But then I started listening. This album is basically exclusively bangers? I then listened to Pure Heroine after and this is definitely better. So I would like to submit a formal apology to the curators of this list for doubting them, I won't do it again. (I probably will, why haven't we got a Green Day album yet?)
Ugh. I wanted to love this album since I have always loved the song about being hit by a double decker bus. That song is a 6/5. The rest of the album didn't really do it for me. A couple funny lyrics but it was just the same sound the entire time.
So close to a 5 for me. Really cool album and it also happened to be the perfect vibe for how I felt this morning.
I've listened to a good amount of Beach Boys and this didn't quite feel as good as some of their other stuff. Not unpleasant but this album doesn't hit in 2024 the way it probably did in 1482 or whenever it was released.
I love MC Solaar. My French is a lot worse than it used to be so I can't understand it as well anymore but I still appreciate the poetic quality of his rap.
This was our second album by Muddy Waters. I can't say I understand his desire to go to Florida but other than that, amazing album. Also Muddy Waters is a sick name.
The rare album that gets better as it goes along!
I'm weirdly into this album?
I know this an absolutely classic album and it's good but it's not mind blowing.
I won't listen to this again but Angelina is having a hard day and we listened to some of the songs and danced around the house which was nice so that's giving it an extra star.
I like Willie Nelson and his vibe, never listened to his music really before this, pretty meh.
The album cover reminds me of Bourne Identity that intense ass scene when he goes to stay at that house where he thinks the family is gone but then they come back and he's being hunted around the farm land by that sniper in the trees and they're running at each other in the high weeds. Damn that's an epic movie. I should probably watch it again, that scene is so tense. Anyway, this album was the perfect mood for this dreadful day (11/7/24), it met me exactly where I was at. Jesus Christ republicans are fucking stupid. It seems really unfair that a person with a quarter of a brain cell has a vote that counts equal (actually probably counts way more) than mine. At least the Celtics are good...
I probably need to listen to this again more locked in since it was more in the background while I worked.
This is an amazing album. I listened to it while working in my garden as the sun was setting, perfection.
I listened to this on a YouTube full album since it didn't seem to be on Spotify. I couldn't tell the songs apart but liked it as a cohesive whole. I would like to be on the Last Train to Trancentral.
I will admit that nostalgia is affecting my opinion on this album a little. But this brings me back to a great time in my life and I loved listening to this album again after not hearing it for a couple years. I am sitting on Dylan's futon, high as a kite, vibing all over again.
At times pretty good, at times annoying.
I generally like punk-y stuff but this wasn't capturing me too much. A 35 minute album with 21 songs is genuinely impressive
The day has finally come! When Stijn and I started this project I said that if this album wasn't on here then the entire list was junk. I am happy to report that the list has now been validated! The first concert I ever went to was Green Day on the American Idiot tour in Mullins Arena at UMass. Thinking back, it was cool as hell that Green Day went out to Western Mass to play a show because almost nobody does that. I think I was in the 4th grade. I remember that I had to actually save up to pay for the ticket myself. My friend's dad got us the tickets and when I went to pay him back with literal rolls of quarters I had saved, he told me he didn't want to carry those around and therefore I got the ticket for free, which was super rad. My pants were falling down all night with the rolls of quarters in my pockets and I was on cloud 9. That was a peak childhood experience and everything about that and this album made me the person I am today. Needless to say I fucking LOVE this album. I have listened to it actual hundreds of times. I can still picture my friend's mom's handwriting on the burned CD she gave me of it. I stream it now, but the feeling never changes. It is quite literally perfect. The songs are all amazing and flow together perfectly. If I was being sent to a desert island for the rest of my life and could only take one album, it would be this. No hesitation. I might even take just half of this album over any other album. I still listen to it all the way through probably once a month, minimum. I hope that never changes. Green Day, thank you for existing and creating this masterful work of art.
Not a fan
