Elephant
The White StripesI love this album.
I love this album.
Really excellent
The arrangement was so familiar also like jazz each song is full of improvisation.
I thought I knew their discography. Pleasant surprise.
Ironic view of the good ol’ days and criticism of cultural stagnation. Also use of Village Green in Hot Fuzz is on the nose.
Don’t like the Beatles. Lucy in the Sky with diamonds is absolutely about drugs.
Radio friendly silliness.
This was an event.
Weirdly all songs sound the same.
Gave up second song in. Too sad for me.
No Refused to listen. In this case i am not separating art from the artist.
Brilliant album. All songs are consistently soulful.
Interesting And fresh
The theme was interesting
Very 80s
Golden Years sounds like Fashion. Overall it’s alright.
Lyrics not complicated, but the talent is on show.
Very melodic
Exceptionally boring. If makes you wonder why they never broken the US this album can clearly demonstrate why.
Interesting and full of charm. Didn’t like the use of certain word in “rednecks”, but understand the reason why satire of southern Americans would use it.
Whenever I listen to run for the hills I’m somewhat bothered by the discrepancy between singing and drums, because they are not at the same time. Listening to the whole album I realised that the drummer is really bad. They don’t keep the same time as the rest of the instruments.
It was missing a hit. Very consistent.
Surprised
Not as good as Graceland.
Mark E Smith cannot sing. The music is interesting.
Surprisingly interesting
Drug references and misogyny, while sounding like Beatles and the Rolling Stones
Not bad. Couple of hits.
Monotone and preachy
Album no longer available in full on Spotify. Listened to main single. It was ok.
Makes me sad.
Poetic and slow
Tough listen when you’re sad.
Loved it. Every song tells a story and they are catchy as well.
You can hear references to other compositions, like Rapsody in Blue. Really good!
Every song sounds the same.
As good as Folsom Prison.
Hypnotising
Interesting voice, but the song arrangements are of it’s time.
It supposed to be atmospheric, but it’s just annoying.
Not my kind of vibe. Found it distracting. Appreciate the artistry.
So Psychodelic and harmless.
It has one radio friendly single and the rest is a stoner album.
With the exception of 1 song most of the songs sound very similar.
Of it’s time. A little preachy with gated reverb.
Boooooring!
Songs to sing by the campfire with a guitar.
Calm and steady. I knew Our House before.
Great storytelling in his song writing. Especially in the title track.
Background noise
A bit whiny
Pleasant, but not memorable.
Came to it with reservations, but the album was surprisingly interesting. The songs had a great style and content together with the message. Found the interludes a little preachy, but not super distracting. Her voice is very soothing.
You can hear the roots that will become reggae music.
We are Portishead! And we are here to make you think of death and stuff!
It doesn’t know what it wants to be. There is plenty of songs that sound very britpop, but also random punk-ish song thrown in the middle. Quite incoherent stylistically.
More of the concept album than pop. The first song “borrows” too much from Cat Stevens which is very distracting.
Don’t love his singing style, especially comparing it to Willie Nelson who sings straight. It makes it difficult to get engaged in the songs.
It sounds like it’s been a one take singing in to a can quality. All songs are covers of popular songs, but Blue Suede Shoes definitely stands out. Blue Moon is interesting.
Loud, brash and great.
Not my vibe. Sounds too much like The Police.
All the hits. Knowing me knowing you is definitely my favourite.
Background noise, but inoffensive.
He crooned his way through a heartbreak. Very depressing. A year later he moves to singing swing, which we know him so well for. This one is alright.
Enjoyable and interesting.
Great lyrics, but album needed more curating to pick the most interesting songs. It feels like it was just throwing everything in.
Sounds unfinished and it’s a bit boring.
The 2 singles are interesting, but the rest is a a little meh.
Precursor to something great.
His voice isn’t as gravely as on later recordings. The lyrics are great.
Very funky concept album from the perspective of a pusher and pimp. Very enjoyable.
Fully instrumental and interesting. Obviously Apache got a second life as basketball anthem, but this is so much more.
Sounds like they are stuck in the 60s.
It’s alright i suppose. Not blowing my socks off.
Of it’s time. You can hear why it became a cult classic.
It was alright.
Rather excellent for a debut album.
Not for me. Tried too hard. Bad singing.
Not for me, but I admire artistry and the explanation of the music is very educational.
Sounds like PiL with some world music influences.
This may have been cheating from me, because i know this album so well. It still amazes me. The voice and the artistry. Love it.
It’s alright. No real feelings. Not great, but not bad either.
Sad post break up Beck album
Blends into the background
Not available on Spotify right now. Found on YT. Melancholic and interesting.
You cannot escape the notion that the Bill Bailey parody is spot on.
Great energy and joyful noise.
More complex arrangements
Soulful and excellent
Fells like a longer album, because it’s so musically dense. Really good.
It shows the potential of the band and Maps is a good example what will be expected in their next releases.
Loud
In all it’s 80s glory it’s not memorable.
Love it. I was very unsure first, but as long as i have been listening it got to me.
Sounds weirdly modern in terms of the music and themes.
Early rap not exactly my vibe.
Some of the songs would kill the invaders from Mars.
Expected worst, but it’s relatively inoffensive.
The singer’s voice is so distinctive you may forget how weak some of songs are.
Very surprised. Loved it!
All about getting high and shagging. Interesting for a debut.
Bit forgettable
Initial impression was very positive, but the longer I listened it felt like The Doors imitators.
Feels very improvised
The sad album
Karen Carpenter can really sing, but i cannot get out of my head that this extremely talented woman starve herself to death.
Becomes monotonous.
Of its time.
I don’t think this album could be made now. So many samples through all the tracks the copyright lawyers would have had a field day. Very consistent.
Interesting and full of samples
With all the synth sounds and gated reverb it’s of its time.
Very theatrical. You have to admire the talent.
Interesting instrumentals
Not for me. However i find it interesting that this was a 5th album by Pulp. Right now artists are forced to succeed with their first efforts.
Almost hypnotic feels improvised and addition of Ginger Baker makes it sounds very special. You cannot believe this is a live recording it sounds so intentional and coordinated.
Excellent and very consistent. You really listen to the songs.
Growly and raw, but lots of songs remind me of other songs.
Surprised by the cultures appropriation in the Jamaica song. Otherwise it’s alright. Saturday is a good song.
She is a very good songwriter.
Awful prog rock monstrosity. So different to their later pop/rock work.
Terrible mess. Good to hear music by other members, but then you have something like Revolution 9.
Proto-punk It not yet had the energy of later punk, but also you could hear the themes that will become so prominent later.
Their voices harmonise really well.
Interesting addition of brass instruments to what is meant to be a punk music.
Weird combination of typical Bollywood songs together with som catchy 70s pop music. Not bad.
Knowing only Red Alert it was interesting to hear the rest of the album.
Not my vibe. The constant jabs at his former band mates and the use of the n word put me off.
Funky and fun
Blue Monday is a great song. The whole album is very good.
Excellent album with Astrud Gilberto’s voice being so smooth and lovely.
Probably will need to listen to it for a second time to really appreciate the music. So giving it expected 3 stars.
It’s a classic that expires countless copies.
Surprising and hypnotic
Didn’t even notice when it looped back. Interesting and unique voice that cannot be mistaken for anyone else, but also the songs are really good too.
Her voice is so soothing
political and yet easy listining
Heartbreak and revenge album. Obviously Any things mentioned in Ironic are coincidence not irony.
I love this album.
The first track overwhelms the rest of the album, but it’s an interesting mix of country and folk music influences.
After the powerhouse that was Nevermind the next album is a response to the enormous success.
Initial impression - OK GO has definitely been inspired by this, because the singing style is very similar and indeed they have covered one of the songs from this album.
So incredible
Consistent and brilliant
Iconic
Big sound and singing talents.
The rapping is of its time, but it’s obvious why it’s influential and was very popular. So much energy, themes of fun and partying. Talent on display.
Karma Chameleon is a catchy song, the rest is weirdly annoying, because the repetitive lyrics and Boy George doesn’t modulate his voice.
Surface, shiny surface from someone really talented, which is more of a shame.
You can hear the blues influences, and knowing that lots of this was inspired by other artists it’s still a great album.
With themes of rebellion and social justice. Also misheard lyrics “Hungry mob is a hangry mob”.
Pretty, but not super memorable.
You have to admire the artistry of those musicians and the energy they play with.
A little meandering, but enjoyable.
The dance songs are so catchy, the ballads a little creepy. Overall solid album.
All the misogyny and violence and drug references. Not for me, but appreciate the g-funk. Music good, lyrics very not.
Really excellent
It’s obvious why this was the best selling album of all times.
Great energy and very accurate lyrics for disenchanted people.
It sounds like jazz from the 50s. Still engaging, but more a foundation the further work to re-define jazz for the rest of the century.
It’s like it’s defining sonic landscape of the 80s with a small nod to dance music. Inoffensive.
Left me unsettled, curious and at awe.
Still feels fresh after 40 year
