Album Summary
A Rush of Blood to the Head is the second studio album by British rock band Coldplay. It was released on 26 August 2002 by Parlophone in the United Kingdom, and a day later by Capitol Records in the United States. Recording started after the band became popular worldwide with the release of their debut album Parachutes (2000), and one of its singles in particular, "Yellow". The album was produced by the band and Ken Nelson, and makes greater use of the electric guitar and piano than its predecessor. The album topped the UK Albums Chart upon its first week of release in the United Kingdom, and became the eighth biggest-selling album of the 21st century in the UK. The British Phonographic Industry has since certified the album 10× Platinum for its accumulated sales of over 3 million units in the UK and the album has sold 15 million copies worldwide. The album spawned the hit singles "In My Place", "The Scientist", and "Clocks". "God Put a Smile upon Your Face" was also released, but was significantly less successful. A Rush of Blood to the Head has been critically acclaimed, and the band received three Grammy Awards for the album; the 2003 Grammy for Best Alternative Album, which was the band's second win in a row, the 2003 Grammy for Best Rock Performance with the song "In My Place", and the 2004 Grammy for Record of the Year with the song "Clocks". In 2020, it was ranked number 324 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". It was also among ten albums nominated for the best British album of the previous 30 years by the Brit Awards in 2010, ultimately losing to (What's the Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis.

I saw your 5 stars and was ready to love this. Sadly though I think it mostly lives up to the Coldplay stereotype of being a bit dull. Warning Sign is good though. Just a very middle of the road album.
Every review starts with either "I hate Coldplay" or "You shouldn't hate Coldplay because X" well what if you just felt indifferent? If you thought the best thing they have done is give the world a news story about two narcissists destroying their marriage while watching Chris Martin sing? I know I have heard multiple songs but I couldn't discern one from another. I am giving an extra point for being in the best scene in Game of Thrones though.
Det är ju ett par hits som skulle kunna dra upp betyget men det är så jävla rakt och ointressant
Meh
It's Cold Play. A bi word for naff. Chris Martin's voice seems particularly whining
Bit boring
Great, Coldplay. A notoriously boring yet popular band. Of course, as with most popular music, the music is utterly mediocre. It sounds like Bends-era Radiohead without the ability to carry melancholy as well. In other words, it's imitation Radiohead that lacks the craft and songs of the real thing. I understand why it's here, but it's not good. This album is ranked #4 of 16 albums for 2002. Other 2002 albums rated by me: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots(2/16)-5 Sea Change(6/16)-2 Highly Evolved(11/16)-2 The Coral(12/16)-1 A Little Deeper(15/16)-2 Justified(16/16)-2
I don't hate Coldplay, but I don't love this album. It's too polished, too lightweight and I have no clue why it's on this list. Parachutes is a better listen for me, but even that...
I’m not normally one to hate on Coldplay but this is dull isn’t it It’s fine just music for sleeping to
I found this album to be boring.
ehhhh...I've much given better albums a 3 and I have to stand on something of consistency when it comes to reviewing an album like this. Yes. Clocks is fucking important as a single and it made your dad and mom feel something back when it was released. Yes. The Scientist has been used in movies and tv moments that might've helped make you cry. but damn. I can't call this anything but pop dribble with a melancholic rock spray paint coating. I think Coldplay did a great job of using pianos with their high falsettos and very low gain distortion "explosive" moments. I think they got away with some clever riffs and a moment in time where pop rock was finding a modern sound. Call me a hater but...man, these lyrics...have you ever read such ambiguous tat? Fuck.
Come all ye: the emasculated, the castrated, the submissive, the cuckolded, the shrinkage victims, the low-testo and the overall giver-uppers. This is the soundtrack of your life.
Clocks is the only decent track. It's otherwise boring and poor.
Just not my bag, never have been. I hear the riff to "clocks" and I change the channel, always will.
Album : 26/1089 Songs known going in : 2/11 Cover Art : atleast they tried Favourite song : Rating : Notes : politik was just a bit boring? I will admit I think his voice is nice. I just dont find it all that interesting. It fades into the background too easily which feels rogue as many people would describe the music I like as that. Oppositely I cant say the scientist isnt good the piano really suits his voice ok green eyes is cute
Meh. Coldplay hasn't aged well.
Well, if there is a must-hear Coldplay album, this is surely it. Tracks 2,3 and 5 maybe? One thing that’s certain is that the ‘pop’ moments are far stronger than the ‘rock’ songs desperate to imitate Radiohead or U2. The problem is, Coldplay are a hopelessly dull alternative to those bands - predictable, colorless and unimaginative. But then again, maybe an album of pop fluff would be too repetitive. Hopefully they strike the right balance eventually.
Inoffensive, indifferent
Honestly exactly just as I expected - this is too basic, too inoffensive and simpletonish music for the big masses. Something you can easily consume and be happy. Of course I knew the clocks and I actualyl liked one other song so far but it doesn't begin even close to saving this, probably strong 2 stars here.
Very calming and pleasant album from prime coldplay. 87/100
Reliably middle of the road, nothing to get excited about
Bland and samey. Don't know why they bother naming individual songs...
I mean, it's Coldplay, for better or worse. Arguably the most musically unassuming band to be as popular as they are. As a testament; while I did recognize Clocks, I had no idea that Coldplay made it. I did enjoy this more than what I can remember from Parachutes, however I expect this album to be similarly forgotten by me soon. Probably will not relisten willingly but then again I'm not a department store music curator.
Why does Coldplay inspire such rage? The songs are well crafted, the production is stellar, Chris Martin is a decent singer with range. I think it comes down to the perception that the earnestness is fabricated. All-in-all this is about 15-20 minutes too long.
How can you listen to the start of this album and not recoil with cringe? This is music for people that nobody wants at the party. There's zero spine to this category of soundwaves
Ok
Listened to a few songs, got bored. Looked at the 54min runtime, gave up. I do not like Coldplay.
You know what, coldplay might not be so bad after all. 3,5/5
This is Coldplay at their peak but I still think their debut is better.
Coldplay I think gets a lot of undue hate. Clocks and The Scientist (both on this album) are some of the biggest songs. Ever. And - for good reason, it is good pop music, period.
Ok
Okayy
😃
Coldplay, like U2 before them, have really become a band one loves to hate. Chris Martin is the perfect rival for Bono in the annoying frontman stakes. But dismissing their entire discography would be doing them (both) a massive disservice. With this sophomore effort Coldplay successfully negotiated the tricky second album and became the biggest band in the world, a position they had fully merited up to this point. This album is much fuller than their brilliant but spindly debut, and whilst it’s true that the first cracks in Martin’s flimsy lyrics began to show, overall it’s a deeply rewarding listen, provided you can get over your prejudices
I mean, the music is not terrible, but it is so dull. 54 minutes that felt like 5 hours.
I'm listening to today's album, Coldplay's "A Rush of Blood To the Head" and it's already much better than the other Coldplay album. It still has that soft rock/adult contemporary sound but there's more there. "God Put A Smile upon Your Face" is actually kind of good. And "The Scientist" is good, but the real win of the album is Willie Nelson's cover of it, which is amazing. It absolutely wrecks me, even thinking about just thinking about it
One of the most best-selling albums in the UK of the 21st century.
Ambient, lush background, mellow lyrics. Emotional in a quiet way. Favorite track - The Scientist
just found it a bit boring
9/10
Coldplay wasn’t really in my radar based on their radio hits. The album was easy listening and almost a little sad.
Growing up I liked coldplay and then in middle school band class we had to play Viva La Vida. We did such a bad job that it ruined Coldplay for me for a long time. I wrote my thoughts on each track but forgot to save it. I thought the album was fine, I knew a couple of songs beforehand, but I realized that the album got better once I made it background music.
De los pocos albumes que me trasmiten lo que cantan. Hermoso
This album is certainly not a ‘Rush of Boood to the Head’. They really got some hits out of it though, and arguably this made the rest of their careers. While the songs are catchy and I can’t say they’re bad songs, they’re so formulaic and take so little risk. I suspect it’s the combination of the safe songwriting and earnestness that rubs so many the wrong way. I’m between a 2 and a 3.
Man vet vad man får när man slår igång skivan, sen blir man varken besviken eller överraskad.
Gah, more Britpoop, music that sounds like The Beatles crossed with a few other bands. Here we get plenty of Beatles, Radiohead, and even Oasis; what a score, its like coming home from a long day of being a wage slave to find your "partner" on the bed with their inner cavity completely hollowed out and filled with candy corn because someone in a music factory thought the world needed more so we all got a Cold Rush of Blood to the Head.
Not as good as their debut, but a thousand times better than their newer stuff. I fear Coldplay will never be as good as in their early albums... and those albums, like this one, are just peak.
It’s always a treat to be able to listen to an album front to back of a band that I appreciate. Coldplay is in my top 5 of best live shows (and I’ve been to a lot). So many hits on this album; also a few songs that are pretty mid (I can see the criticism of them being whiny), but overall solid. (4)
Early Coldplay was pretty goated ngl Fave track: The Scientist
All the discussions around whether or not Coldplay were decent or actually utter shit are pretty boring. A much more interesting discussion point would be which is better? Their first album or their second? Personally, I think I'm leaning second. The first has higher highs but lower lows, while the second is consistently better overall. And I do think they managed to refine their sound a little on this one. Anyways, I like Coldplay. There's a place in music for what they dish up. 4/5
I have a mixed impression of Coldplay. In large part likely due to certain tracks of theirs being over-played extensively on the radio ("Yellow" in particular being rather irritating). That bias aside, I've always been interested in this album, primarily due to its cover which I think is also a great reflection of the sound within. There is indeed a "coldness" to their music, and I promise I don't mean that in a bad way...necessarily. It is hard to put my finger on it, but it has to do with the way their more synth-heavy tracks sound. Kind of sterile. I didn't find myself super engaged with those. It is actually the more acoustic-forward songs I found more enjoyable. Fav Tracks: "God Put a Smile upon Your Face", "Green Eyes" and "Warning Sign"
I'm old school hating Coldaplay, I was shitting on them way before it was cool, but outside the snippets of songs I'd hear on MTV2 before swiutching over I'd never really listened to them. This has just proved that I was right all along and didn't need to listen to any albums. The Scientist is a decent enough song but it doesn't really go anywhere and God put a smile starts off sounding like a cover of Just by Radiohead but has no chorus and just runs out of steam. Other than that it's all bland and dreary mid tempo nonsense. Some cool atmospheric guitar parts and basslines but the songs aren't strong enough to support them
Oh man, I loved Coldplay as a teenager. It's hasn't really held up as well, but it isn't terrible.
3.5
Say what you want, but "Clocks" is one of those bangers that is quickly approaching becoming a standard. The naughties are such a terrible decade of music that this Coldplay album is actually one of the better albums to come from that decade. This also happens to be one of their most complete albums. I think Coldplay gets far too much criticism for being anodyne, but frankly they are one of the more relevant artists from England at this time frame precisely because their sound was more inviting than many of the other acts from the early 2000s England were. Working with subtleties is more difficult than it might first sound. Solid enough album though I admit that a couple of tracks could have been sacrificed to really tighten this runtime up. Faves: "Clocks", "Daylight", and "A Whisper"
Read this this morning and went UGH BLOODY COLDPLAY. My opinion on Coldplay hasn't changed since that, and yet the album is fine. There's some nice piano on it, Chris Martin sometimes sounds ok and is sometimes annoying. The Daylight song was rather irritating
8- / 10
mt bom
Mycket mindre hit-inriktat än jag föreställde mig efter att ha sett dem live. Bättre också, jämnt bra material av melodisk mittemellan rock och pop. Borde vara min grej, men det är som att jag intr får plats med fler kärlekar. En fyra.
It’s hard to reassess 25 years after it released because it was such a huge part of my formative years, passively…you couldn’t be a teenager in England in the early 00s without being bombarded with Coldplay songs. As such my knee jerk reaction was ‘ffs, not a Coldplay album’ (note: I genuinely love the album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends). But walking and listening on an overcast breezy day shocked me…do I like Coldplay? The song that hit the hardest was In My Place, it took me by total surprise. Listening to the album in its entirety I think it was probably too sophisticated for a 12-year-old to love. But the emotion of some of the songs is undeniable. It’s still a 3/5 for me because the production/mix felt messy.
Coldplay: A Rush of Blood to the Head Do Coldplay suck now? Absolutely. Was I alive when this album was the biggest thing in the world and became incredibly overplayed? No. But I don’t think either of those are fair enough criticisms to convince me that this isn’t one of the best albums of the 2000s. You can say what you want about it being derivative of Radiohead, overly sentimental, went on to inspire terrible music; all the criticisms I ever hear about early Coldplay have nothing to do with the actual music, and quite frankly, as far as this album goes sonically, it’s brilliant. I genuinely think it is impossible for someone to not enjoy at least one song off of this album; Coldplay cracked the formula for what makes a song addicting and relatable, and though that may have led to the degradation of art in the charts, I think it at least works in the context of this album. The first half is pretty much flawless, and Clocks may well be one of the greatest songs ever written; Coldplay just don’t miss with their piano hooks. Though the second half doesn’t have any obvious standouts, I still think it’s strong enough to maintain this album’s classic status. Maybe I’m biased because I found this album at a pivotal time, but to be honest, Coldplay are one of the most famous bands ever, so I’m pretty confident I’m not alone in thinking they're great. Best Songs: Clocks, In My Place, The Scientist Worst Song: A Whisper Score out of 10: 9.5
I’m just not a fan of Coldplay. I’d never really listened to them properly before this so I was willing to give them a chance, but no. Just boring are the words I would use to describe this record, absolutely nothing stood out to me. I couldn’t even finish listening to the last 3 tracks because the whole album is so repetitive and bland it was genuinely depressing me.
Familiar but largely uninspiring. I don't hate it for being bland, but it is a bit bland.
One of the more recent bands that has continued to keep a rock genre and not rapped or punked the music up.
Yesss.
At some point I even forgot I was listening to something. Coldplay is not a bad band, it's also not a good band. Listening to their music is like having the ambiance of a shopping mall 24/7.
Grocery store music
Really good
Pretty good.
ew chris!
8/10
A sneaky four stars for me. I unapologetically enjoy both of Coldplay’s first two albums. All goes rapidly downhill thereafter.
To me, Coldplay are like the Man United of music. Everybody hates them because they became so popular. Granted, Chris Martin is a chopper of the highest order, but there's undoubtedly some great musical moments on this album in particular. To say that they are completely bland is disingenuous in my opinion. Cringe - yes. Guilty pleasure - yes. Chris Martin is a bell end of the highest order - yes. But there's a reason why so many people listened to this album.
Pretty good
*27 Jeg kan godt lide "If Coldplay were a spice they'd be flour" Det er så kedeligt.
Obligatory: "You know how I know you're gay? Because you like Coldplay." But its a pretty good album. Probably could have ended after Green Eyes, went down pretty quick after that.
This album was a big deal when it dropped and I listened to it a lot when I was in high school. Some of the lyrics remind me of an apathetic and melodramatic time as I did not know better. Hasn’t aged as well as Chris Martin would hope. It’s okay lol
I've never understood why Coldplay gets the hate that it does. I was neutral about the band until I saw them live during the Viva La Vida Tour, and I've been a fan ever since. This is a really strong album where many of their live staples originated like Clocks, the Scientist and In My Place. Though my personal favorite off this album is Green Eyes.
This is a really strong early Coldplay album. Plenty of loved classic tracks from my early childhood here I recognize even if I didn’t know the names of them. Consistent and enjoyable! 1 listen Favorite Tracks: Politik, Clocks, The Scientist, Amsterdam
Instant 5 on seeing today's album listed. This one and I have history!
Very good
Хороший, но не любимый и лучший альбом у Колдплэй. 8/10
Remember the good old days when not all Coldplay songs sounded the same? This album and X&Y were so fucking good. So many saves!
I’ve never understood the Coldplay hatred. I find their music to be easy listening.
Back when Coldplay had a little bit more credibility. Some top notch anthemic song writing, in the hopeful and joyous style. Still something about Coldplay that really grates but just can't pinpoint it. If I'm being objective about this album on its own, it's really good.
Copy-pasted (with minor edits for clarity) from my review for "Parachutes": I'm quite familiar with this album. When Coldplay first came out, I admit I didn't like it. I found I could enjoy "Trouble" but still had a tough time getting their overall thing. When their second album came out, I enjoyed that quite a bit more. I checked that out, and found it to be solid, and upon revisiting "Parachutes," I was able to see it in a different light and came to enjoy it on a similar level. But then they released their third album. It's got one or two good songs, but otherwise blah. And the "blah" has only intensified since then. So, it has become disheartening to listen to the first two Coldplay albums, knowing what has happened since then. These first two albums are absolutely worth being on this list and a clear distinction should be made between them and the albums thereafter.
I found this project so bland and boring that it was absolutely excruciating to get through. The only way I can describe it is if you took Radiohead's 'Ok Computer', sucked all the life out of it, and replaced masterful songwriting for cheesy and predictable lyrics. While 'The Scientist' was familiar and thus almost tolerable, every other track had me physically cringing, in particular the song 'Green Eyes', which is just destined for white weddings. I don't see how this can be one of the 1001 albums you must listen to before you die. I'm praying for an album by a female artist/band next...
I’d dare any performative Coldplay hater to listen to this album in full and tell me it's not brilliant. I'll always be an unashamed Coldplay fan, and this record is one of my favourites. It's brilliantly well written and has a huge collection of standout tracks that defined an era in Britain.
Unavoidable and painful. But mostly painful.
Not the dull U2 rip-off I expected, but it's still pretty unexciting stuff. It probably sounds better if you are a middle-aged, white corporate executive having an affair with a co-worker.
Really offensive how pleasant this album is
Dull, derivative and just boring
Liked it well enough, always enjoy Clocks and The Scientist.
Sometimes you really listen to the lyrics and monitor the rhyme schemes of Coldplay and realize you are unimpressed. Other times, you sit back and just enjoy the show. Together, these two paths lead to a 3 middle ground
I could pretty much just copy and paste my review of the last Coldplay album ("I once heard someone argue that Coldplay is sacred music for secular people and I've never heard a more accurate description.") to this one and it would remain a valid review of this - if not more so! We have more songs here that try to get at bigger questions of people yearning for spiritual answers. And I do think they do a better job on this album of doing that. So 3.5 stars, rounded down.
Politik In My Place God Put a Smile upon Your Face The Scientist Clocks
