Shitty Radiohead the Musical
We went to a family friend Christmas party a few years ago. I was sitting in the living room with a college kid and he threw on a Youtube video of a Coldplay concert. I repressed the urge to call him gay and show him some "real music". I will admit at the time, I thought the music sucked, and I thought the kid was a total fucking pussy for loving Coldplay. A few days ago I listened to this record, and I must say, I was blown away. I found the songs deeply moving. To enjoy you love this record is to love yourself. I'm gay.
I know we have another ~900 albums to go, but this may end up in the top 5 of the most boring albums included. Coldplay are the masters of making a 3:30 song feel like 6 minutes. this is music for people who have reached adulthood and have never tried an olive because “olives are gross.” either they took the prior two decades of British rock and decided to make the most bland, palatable shlock for the masses, or this is simply what they’re capable of. friends have told me that Coldplay is the greatest live act alive, and I’m convinced that’s because they primarily have musical theatre as a reference point and haven’t actually gone to many concerts. post-9/11 standards were low I guess. people wanted rallying songs to sweep them off their feet, and this is what they were fed. I hope they at least took all the money they made from this nonsense and paid Brian Eno well for his work with them later on.
People often compare Coldplay to Radiohead, and while I get it for sure, I think the closer comp would be The National. Both are fairly straightforward rock acts, build to big, crowd-pleasing crescendos, and it seems like their singers could probably sit down for an entire show. The National just happen to be more interesting and good in every way possible. I think if Chris Martin didn’t have so much money he’d be jealous of Matt Berninger, not Thom Yorke.

I've often heard Coldplay get compared to Radiohead and frankly I never understood the comparison. Radiohead has such a unique sound and, as a band, they make a ton of interesting choices musically. They also are beloved by critics, which Coldplay is decidedly not. In listening to what Coldplay has put into mass radio the last 2 decades, I'm not sure I could think of more divergent directions musically within the rock genre than Coldplay and Radiohead. Coldplay is decidedly radio friendly, while Radiohead is focused much more on bending the laws of music acceptability. But in listening to this album, I finally get why the comparisons exist. Before evidently turning towards being as commercially popular as possible, Coldplay appears to have had a super interesting sound that I would describe as a more straightforward Radiohead. Are they as talented? No. Is it as different as Radiohead? No. That said, there is a lot here that is different than their later "let's fill the stadium with this one" popular slop, and I have to say that I loved this record. The front half of this record is filled with great tracks. Politik is really interesting, I loved In My Place, and even God Put a Smile Upon Your Face is very good. Meanwhile, though The Scientist and Clocks are certainly heard a lot on the radio, they are genuinely tremendous songs, each very unique in their own sound. 5 songs in and this record has hit all the right notes. From there, the album isn't quite as peak, but it is still very good in many ways. Personally, I think the choices made on Daylight are very intriguing, even if it is a bit more straightforward of a track. Green Eyes gave me a bit of a Bob Dylan feel for some reason, maybe it's the way Chris Martin hits some of the chorus. Regardless, how voice moves through different registers is pretty impressive. A Warning Sign sounded like it could have been lifted straight from the 90s alternative catalog (which I love), so this track hit for me, especially with the full sound it builds to. A Whisper is track that has a lot of interesting layers to me. I could see the repetition of hearing "A Whisper" over and over again from CM bothering some people, but it wasn't over the top for me. This track was another winner to my ear. Perhaps interestingly, the title track was arguably the least interesting track on here. It's solid but it felt a bit like a harbinger of where they eventually head with how anthemic it is, so it was a bit of a letdown vs. the rest of the album. It's not bad, and the playing on it is solid, it just wasn't nearly as exciting as the rest of this collection. Fortunately, things pick back up with Amsterdam, which has a great atmosphere to it. Quiet and minimalist in its initial approach, it's a well-constructed song and Martin's flipping between falsetto, full-throated, and understated made this an excellent track. I suspect some people are not going to rate this very well because, well, it's Coldplay. But if you take the name out and really listen to this album - the diversity within and across the songs, the choices they make, the quality of the tracks - it's easy to love this album, even if it is a shame where they head from here. 5 stars. A tremendous record.
I love this album! I was a big fan of the first two Coldplay records. This came out at a time when everyone was talking about Radiohead, and I think on this one they really tried to chase that Radiohead sound, which is always a good thing.

A Rush of Blood to the Head is a mellow, atmospheric album that's perfect for unwinding after a long day. It has a warm, reflective feel that pairs especially well with a rainy autumn afternoon. The lyrics are thoughtful and memorable, adding emotional depth to the beautiful melodies. A classic choice for both longtime Coldplay fans and newcomers, the album also features one of the band's most iconic songs, "Clocks."
Not a fan at all of Coldplay but I am able to recognize a sincere record with classics like "The Scientist" and "Clocks". It's a simple sound record with a mellow energy. Feels like a person that is living but with a deep sadness burrowed within

Genuinely hard one to call. There is so much classic work on there, and the pallette is distinctive. But is there just an X factor shy? Are Daylight and Green Eyes a bit too much of a drag?

Aqui no Coldplay, tudo soa comercial, de uma forma ok, boa, mas não me agrada tanto.. Me lembra até música de ninar. Mas é um bom disco, sejamos justos.
Parachutes was definitely a Radiohead rip-off through and through, but A Rush of Blood to the Head is something else where it feels more inspired by its' predecessor instead of blatantly copying and with that something truly great is created. The songwriting on this album is the true star of the show as Coldplay is able to more thoroughly think out what they want to convey without relying so heavily on instrumentals. The Scientist, Politik, Clocks, Green Eyes, and Amsterdam are all incredible pieces of a more moody Art Rock sound also being able to somehow be something that can be played on radios and absolutely dominate the airwaves of that time to the point where they became an international sensation. I wouldn't ever said Radiohead went Pop even with Creep and any of their music, even with their more critically and commercially acclaimed albums like OK Computer, Pablo Honey, and In Rainbows, Coldplay managed to find that middle point and ride that high to stardom. Even if Coldplay is now a husk of the band they used to be in the early 2000s, A Rush of Blood to the Head is still an impressive feat nonetheless.
Pre Listen: Coldplay. I think this is arguably the most "mainstream" album I've gotten yet. Coldplay's music has been a staple of every alt-rock, indie-rock, hell any modern rock adjacent playlist and radio station since at least 2005. That being said, I could only really name a handful of their songs off the top of my head. Measured expectations going in. Notable Tracks: The Scientist - First song I recognized on this album. It's alright. Clocks - First song I INSTANTLY recognized on here. I actually like this song. Cool. Daylight - Probably my favorite song on the album. The melody between vocals is just so...nice. Green Eyes - Probably my least favorite song on the album. It's just kind of boring. Many acoustic songs work well to contrast more complicated songs on the rest of the album. This one's just boring, same chords throughout, bored-sounding vocals. Post Listen: It was good. I'm classifying this, and perhaps future albums under "Millennial Rock". Sometimes it's really boring, sometimes it's pretty neat, it's never really bad per say. It's characterized by smoother, low tempo beats, lots of ooo-ing and aaa-ing, and the occasional piano or other classic-adjacent instrument. Lots of talk of feelings and other abstract concepts through metaphors or storytelling. This album feels foundational for a lot of Millennial Rock. The key components are done well. 4/5.
always liked coldplay and this album cements my enjoyment for what they have done
GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE So timeless. It all just sounds so good. I already had four songs from this album in my library. I could gush about this one for hours. So emotional. So consistent. Chris sounds spectacular throughout. That last minute of Politik is spectacular. I’ve heard these songs a hundred different times each and it wasn’t until yesterday that I realized that they were all in the same album—just spectacular. I added every song but Green Eyes (which was still a charming, emotional song, I just don’t have the ears for it). I don’t know how it manages to sound so perfect instrumentally throughout the entire album. What a treat. Easiest five I’ve ever given.
Though most of the album sounds the same, the music is solid and I would listen to it again.

I wanted to shit on this because of what Coldplay turned into but reflecting on who they were when this was realized, it still holds up. It feels reflective, personal, and intentional. Not selling me on some global message or some characterized version of themselves.

A perfect example of a group taking what worked on their first album, and adding new levels of musical depth to enhance their output. A handful of iconic-if-overplayed songs, and a lot of lesser known tracks that are some of Coldplay's best. The only problem is Coldplay never managed to recapture this magic on their future albums. Top tracks: In My Place, The Scientist, Warning Sign, A Rush of Blood to the Head
As far as I can remember, Coldplay's first three albums were the 'good' ones, before they veered further and further towards commercialism, ultimately sinking into pop trash. Back then, Coldplay were regarded as 'cheerful Radiohead' or 'Radiohead without the depression'. After all these years, I’m listening to their second album, "A Rush of Blood to the Head", again, and I’m not quite sure what to make of it. The comparison with Radiohead is certainly flattering, as Radiohead didn't make music this simple on their debut. On the one hand, Coldplay's signature "wall of post-rock sounds" certainly has its charms; on the other hand, it's all rather monotonous and bland. Perhaps it isn’t even the best of their first three albums? Overall, it's just average. Or maybe I’ve simply moved on from this sort of music.
I think their biggest offense is also their reason for success: they're supremely inoffensive. Nothing new. Nothing different. Safe.

The first few songs droned on to seemingly no end. Then the Scientist and Clocks came on back to back which are obvious bangers. Then the rest was meh. So it's a solid 3-star album.
It’s hard to be objective about Coldplay because their music absolutely ruled the airwaves in the 2000s. The sound is gentle throughout. The vocals are well mixed and easy to understand.

Hate when it makes me listen to Coldplay but this probably their best album. It's just alright and plays it safe. Nothing really special though is it.
- Not only does every song sound the same, but each is as emotionally exciting as a styrofoam cup. - I would have left "Green Eyes" on. All others I would have skipped. - Coldplay is inoffensive. But they are so inoffensive that I find myself starting to be offended. And then "Clocks" came on and gave me a PTSD flashback and what would have been a "fine" 3 stars became a "meh" 2 stars.

In My Place is an anthem and The Scientist is pretty great too. The first 5 songs are all pretty good. The title track is decent. Better than Parachutes. Not as boring.

If you had asked me 10 years ago if I liked Coldplay, I would say I did. Somewhere between now and then, they drifted from my awareness and became just another band that I knew existed and that had a few songs I kind of liked. I can't say I thought about them often (except for that kiss cam incident about a year ago) or that I particularly missed them. On top of all that, I had never listened through an entire Coldplay album until I listened to this one. I can't say I enjoyed this experience. This album was a slog, and the songs just don't feel like they have anything to them. Somehow, even the big singles here seem drearier than I remember. I think this is probably an incident of an album not aging very well, but I don't think I would have enjoyed much of this album even if I had heard it as a teenager. Younger me would have been surprised that I am giving a Coldplay album this low of a score, but now I wonder if I will even remember this band at all in another 10 years. Favorite track: "Clocks," despite it reminding me of listening to the radio at my old nursing home job.

I was an early fan of Coldplay. They arrived on the scene while I was in high school and created their best music while I soared through those formative years into college. This album came out during my sophomore year and I adored every moment of it. Emotions ran high almost all of the time in those days, and listening to this all the way through transported me back to that delicate time of tissue paper skin and feeling things so fully I could burst with the intensity.
Maybe after this there aren’t any more Coldplay albums on this list

It's like if Oasis was worse.
Some hints of good songwriting here, especially ‘The Scientist’, but the album gets mired down by repetitive rhythmic choices that are typical of writers who compose on piano but don’t have actual facility with the instrument. Lyrically, it’s unbelievably lazy- this is a man with absolutely nothing to say. Sonically it can be powerful (in headphones) but Coldplay was in desperate need of a producer who could push them harder and further in terms of both arrangements and songwriting.

Filho, temos Radiohead em casa… Radiohead em casa: Eu brinco, mas realmente é impossível fugir da comparação. Mas se for copiar algo bom, seja bom também. E eles são ótimos, Rush e Parachutes, seus primeiros álbuns, são realmente fantásticos. Gosto muito de ambos. Grande parte das canções aqui são boas por si só, mas o que eleva o disco pra mim são os pequenos floreios acrescentados, uma breve passagem, um riff escondido… é sempre uma pequena coisa que clica na cabeça e faz aquela faixa se tornar memorável. Gosto desse aspecto composicional deles. É um ótimo Rock meloso, sentimental e lento, mas sinto falta de algumas faixas mais energéticas, carregando o espírito pós-britpopiano igual Radiohead faz. 4.5

Look, do I like what Coldplay has become now in 2026? Not really. But some of these other reviews are crazy to hate on this album just because Coldplay is popslop now. Anyways, this album is great. Of course we all know "The Scientist" and "Clocks" coming in with over 4 BILLION Spotify streams currently between them, but I also really enjoy "In My Place" "God Put A Smile upon Your Face" "Daylight" and "Warning Sign" I do think the album drops off a little towards the end, but still good.

I never used to like Coldplay, all songs sounded like Yellow to me. Viva La Vida was different, and unblocked my ears. Between Clocks and The Scientist this is certainly worth Al listen, and the rest is alright too.

I want to give this album a higher rating, but Coldplay is just too corporate and milquetoast to warrant anything better.
I wanted to hate this, but I loved it. Really tight and clean, swooping harmonies and a considered album.
I’m not a big Coldplay fan, and this one was pretty dross, tunes are ok, but nothing here for me.

I definitely agree with a lot of the criticisms around Coldplay, and I think a lot of the claims about how basic/boring a lot of their music is really gets exemplified on a good portion of the latter half of this album. That being said, the first half of this album is so strong, that I still feel like I can't rate this lower than a 4, even if I'm not particularly a fan of the band overall.

I’ve heard this before. I do not like Coldplay as I have stated earlier. It’s been many years since I last heard this so I’m going in with an open mind. It sounds like the auditory equivalent of eating a damp unflavored rice cake in an entirely beige room. This is flat diet store brand cola, but from that phase when crystal pepsi was a thing. This is a hospital gown. I would respect them more if they were some obnoxious crunkcore band rather than this bland jello mold.
I've never been a Coldplay fan as such, but I've never really got the hate for them either. Listening to this album (and The Scientist in particular) it’s easy to understand how they became huge.

10/10 - this was a crucial part of my high school indie rock musical formation, I know they're known for their overscaled pop ballads but this album to me is flawless. The Coldplay I remember with classics such as The Scientist but hidden gems like Politik too. Brilliant Album

Usual, expected Coldplay sound. It's airy, folky, early 2000s rocky. It's nice to listen to, but doesn't grab me like it seems to for others. I don't dislike it though.

When it’s good it’s too cloying, when it’s bad I find my finger subconsciously drifting towards the skip button when the song starts to fade out.

i didnt hate this like i expected to. for the most part, its pretty straightforward pop rock but the song writing is good even most of the songs are pretty boring
I am incredibly familiar with the work of Martin and co but I have never chosen to listen to an album all the way through. In My Place is SO famous and I can see that The Scientist is also on its way. I know a lot of these without knowing the titles (‘God put a smile upon your face’ is an annoying name for a song but it’s one of the catchiest so far. ’Clocks’ also made me laugh as a title but it’s one of the more enjoyable ones). Did my dad have this in the car? Why does it have to be so sad? What is this music about? Is it how straight people love but don’t like each other? again? It is polished and consistent but a smooth rock face is hard to climb. It is incredibly of its time - in part because of its insane popularity but also because as I recall 2002 just sounded like this. I am struggling with the boredom but it feels performative to hate this; there should be earnest (if vague) music for mums (my mum). They should have called this album ‘music for montages’.
There’s not much for me on this album other than the obvious winners (The Scientist remains undefeated and Clocks is good, of course). It’s not bad by any means but I just don’t connect with it in this phase of my life. I also really wish they tried some slightly more complex instrumentals- their hits always have that little something different from their usual patterns and that’s what takes them all the way to me. One thing I do have to give credit for is that the album has a very strong and coherent vibe you can’t help but fall into.
I really like the first two Coldplay albums. This was nice to revisit. Say what you want about the band, but they did not shy away from crafting longer songs when they suited it. Honestly an all-shoegaze cover album of this would whip ass. Original idea, DNS.

The songwriting is there, the instrumentation is lush when it needs to be and pulled back when it needs to be, and Chris Martin sounds great on these songs. What's not to like?
What’s weird album, there is nothing wrong with it, the production is great, there is some great guitar lines and drumming. But as a whole, it is just so boring!
There's a lot of iconic tracks from this album and while I don't love most of them, I gotta respect the hits and the variety that this album has to offer. It was well crafted
I like to rant about Coldplay. There's something about Chris Martin that gets on my nerves. His entire personality, that’s what it is. Although I must say he's quite a good comedic actor. But like Timberlake, I wish he'd stop making music and instead focus on comedy. It's not just how annoying Chris Martin is. It's Coldplay’s whole stadium-filling cringe fest, their collaborations with manufactured pop-singers, their shitty dance-music crossovers, and so much more that makes them so damn unlikeable. But years before they were outing CEO and HR execs’ affairs with cringe-inducing made-up songs, they came out with two half-decent albums. That's the part that I usually keep to myself. “Parachutes” was a good album. There, I said it. And parts of “A Rush of Blood to the Head” are decent too, even enjoyable. The first four songs to be specific. “Politik” is a great song, really great actually. The chorus is excellent. “In My Place” is cheesy, but enjoyable enough. “God Put a Smile upon Your Face” has a decent acoustic guitar riff and melody. “The Scientist” is another song I'll admit that I properly liked when it came out first, and revisiting, it mostly holds up. It's at the fifth song, less than halfway through the album, that things start to fall apart. “Clocks” is the first of that “new Coldplay” sound, and it’s not a good direction. It's a testament of just how annoying that song is to me, that I can't even begin to articulate why it annoys me so much. Doing so would just annoy me too much. The rest of the album is dull and uninteresting. The title track is the only remaining song that I remotely like. Otherwise, I've completely lost all interest. We haven't entered the peak Coldplay cringe era yet, but you can sense that it's not far away. They're not the only shitty band making shitty pop music, but they get my wrath for a reason. They started off so promisingly. Their first album, and the first half of this record showed us that they could actually write some decent songs. But then they seemed to make a conscious decision to sell-out and start making rubbish. So, I like to rant about Coldplay.

There's a lot of good songwriting here. Politik is a strange song, a pounding repetitive rhythm through 2/3s of it that then transforms into a pretty Chris Martin Coldplay tune. I've always been a sucker for the shoegaze shimmery stuff when it's loud enough. Most of the time it's loud enough. 4/5. I'd put it on a list for a visitor from space who wants to understand how Coldplay got big, otherwise no.

We were really listening to this shit, huh? The throughline from the 90s radio rock experience filtered through a polyester Radiohead with twinkly guitars, snappy drums, and dumb vocals scratches an obvious part of the brain. Feels good out of the box, but the digger you deep the more you get the feeling that you've been cheated. It ages poorly and the things that you enjoyed just don't seem to be there anymore, but it's still something you liked so you keep giving it a chance. Boring and shallow, but somewhat hooky and inoffensive. Definitely dated. I'd give it a 3 for its middle-of-the-road, paint-by-numbers sound, but some of the more dirge-like (God Put a Smile upon Your Face, Daylight, A Whisper) songs really grated on me.

Again, a somewhat biased view here as I am not a Coldplay fan at all. Wasn't looking forward to this album, and didn't enjoy both listens through tbh. It wasn't as bad as expected though, still listenable, but I just really can't see what it is that people seem to think makes them such passive stars. A must hear album? Not sure.

It’s difficult to rate this without thinking about what came next for them, I.e. music by numbers for people who don’t like music. Having said that, the strong tunes on this are very good, not musically innovative but they definitely hit a spot and that’s not as easy as people would like to believe. It was heading for 4/5 from me but it really tails off towards the latter third. As Super Hans said ‘you can’t trust people, people listen to Coldplay and voted for the Nazis’ IYKYK.

This album was pretty enjoyable. I mean, Coldplay is Coldplay, but they had a surprising amount of range with their vibe in this album. I'm impressed but it's obvious all the stuff I had heard off this album was their hits, so that's kinda all I need to say on the subject matter. Favorite track on the album was Green Eyes. I appreciated The Scientist and Clocks but this song really felt the most heartfelt.

If this isn't Coldplay's best album, it's at least their most consistent. There are no weak songs here, and there's nice variety between heavier moments and the lighter acoustic songs that dominated their debut. "The Scientist" is the standout, with its haunting piano and climax. My unpopular opinion is that "Clocks" is a bit of a dud; "Politik," "In My Place," "Green Eyes," and the title track are all better. But even those songs are just pretty good, and that's this album's big problem. As much as I enjoy listening to it, it almost never wows me and I would not miss it if I never heard it again. I know Coldplay's reputation is that they're kind of milquetoast, and I think that's unfair because they've written beautiful melodies and shown a desire to explore new sounds over their career. But the highs on this album are just not high enough.

Una carrera ejemplar hasta que con Mylo Xyloto (2011) comenzó un camino diferente (a peor), salvando Ghost Stories y Everyday life. Otros temas destacados fueron In my place, Politik, The scientist, en fin toda la cara A si es que añun se puede hablar de caras. El disco se me hace un poco monótono y triste, le falta algo más de fuerza (U2 por ejemplo en eso siempre les sacaron ventaja), pero el disco es estupendo.

At the time, Coldplay were sneered at as Radiohead copyists - and it's true, you can see exactly where the influences come in. Daylight is very clearly a Pyramid Song copy, and you can hear No Surprises, Karma Police, High and Dry etc throughout the album. On the other hand - those are all really good songs, and so unsurprisingly, the ripoffs are enjoyable. It's a bit saccharine, a bit lacking in bite, but you can totally see why they got huge. It's meaningful music, stripped of edge for a mainstream audience, but you can see why it worked. Somewhere on the 3/4 boundary. Lets stick with 3.

Nostalgic listen. This is peak Coldplay. Amsterdam is an absolute stunner. The other singles are played a ton to this day for a reason. The non-singles in the album don't shine through as much.

Yeah - this one’s hard for me. I honestly like this album in the way I always have - Radiohead for yoga practitioners. It goes down smoothly. But… well… I suppose everyone says it. It’s maybe too smooth, too easily in the background, too lacking in content that can’t be easily moved from one story line to another at will. So… 3. Boolean: yeah, I do think one should listen to the music that is most listened to for understanding, if nothing else. And, you know, it is easy to listen to.
Willie Nelson's version of The Scientist was better.

This is wussy music for wusses, but damn it's catchy as hell. Do yourself a favor and listen to the covers of The Scientist by Aimee Mann and Willie Nelson, they both blow Coldplay's version out of the water.
Before Coldplay became kind of a joke, they released a couple albums that got them there. Some incredible music. Saw this tour in a small venue and the music packed a punch. I know they are U2 level of grandiosity now, but at one time, this album was fresh and new. It was great.
I don't think I really listened to this since it came out in the early 2000s. In the years that passed, I never considered myself much of a Coldplay enthusiast and therefore no need to revisit it. It's better than I remember. It's not for everyone, I totally understand the "Coldplay are bland" jibes and how insufferable Chris Martin became, but this is still a very enjoyable and well written album. Good, simple, thoughtful, minimalistic and well-crafted songs in my view. I'm a big fan of the title track, I forgot how great that is. Never thought I would give it a 4 but here we are. Miles better that I remember.

I’ll be honest, i didnt give this close scrutiny and didn’t finish. Usual problem of not enough time and littlw interest in the band. Never heard a full album of theirs before and still havent but heard enough to think, meh. They’re not terrible. Britpop light? The drummer is in time amd consistent, but boring and i dont feel a good connection between him and the bass, both playing on the beat a lot of the time, little interplay. Its all wistful ballady pop, start quiet, creswndo, go quiet again, rinse repeat.

While Parachutes was an intimate, almost soft-rock album, A Rush of Blood to the Head is exactly what Coldplay should have been: a majestic, big-sounding band. 'The Scientist' features one of my favorite lyrics: 'Nobody said it was easy / No one ever said it would be this hard.' This was Coldplay proving they could be massive, signaling a grand, arena-ready sound that bands like Arcade Fire would soon capitalize on. It's funny that they eventually stepped away from this style, but for a little while, they absolutely nailed it. I love big and epic music, and this album is exactly that.
Surprised - i guess early coldplay is great
A glamour is a sort of magical working that alters perception, allowing the practitioner to control how they are seen, heard, and felt. Often glamours are used to produce a veneer of charisma, beauty, or confidence. But they are unstable: hard for the practitioner to maintain and easy for a strong-minded psychic warrior to penetrate. What lies beneath the glamour? Whatever the practitioner is trying to cover up. Their ugliness. Their cupidity. Their cravenness. Or their insecurity. Their self-doubt. Their emptiness. If I believed in such things, I'd be easily convinced that Chris Martin has managed to produce and uphold a glamour for the best part of three decades. A Rush of Blood to the Head weaves an amiable spell, but I just know that, if I listened to the lyrics more closely or gave the music greater consideration, it would all come apart. But, for some reason, I don't go there. When I think of paying attention to the lyrics, they become a blur. When I attempt to grapple with music, the song mysteriously ends. And that may be part of the glamour, not just the ungraspable quality of the recording itself, but the actual reluctance to listen to it intently. The veneer that Martin produces is not exactly one of charisma, beauty, or confidence, but of a sort of gentle amiability. There is the feeling that it would so easy to pull down the façade and find nothing behind it that it would be beneath all of us to do it. Chris Martin has been called a bedwetter by Alan McGee and got on with it, so what worse could you or I possibly do. What would the point even be in finding the empty centre of the Coldplay project? Isn't the amiable, vague something better than more absolute nothing? There will be plenty of that when we're dead. 2 Coldplay seemed like such nice kids when they first appeared. They dressed stylelessly, they had good manners, and they were always putting themselves down in the form ‘[x] are so much better than us, we’re not worthy, we can hardly play’. And it was truth they spoke, ‘X’ were certainly better than them - even where X = Travis; Coldplay could barely play their instruments. They were so humble at the same time as being eager to please. “Excuse me, I know it’s a terrible imposition because we’re rather rubbish, but if you wouldn’t mind listening to our song for a minute that would be so amazing…etc”. It was very easy to root for them. Yellow, apart from being a charming little song, had a charming little video - Chris Martin, looking like he had just wandered down to the beach after his night shift at Boots, having a slow motion dander and a sing while the sun came up. Chris Martin’s falsetto-centred singing invoked exactly the same sort of fragility that Thom Yorke’s did and seemed a slightly pathetic tribute, and yet even there how could the listener muster anything like contempt? Wee Chris wasn’t singing about societal disintegration and alienation; just about a girl he liked. When had Thom last done that? It was somehow Thom who came out worse from the comparison. Although I didn’t bother with Parachutes (they were obviously a bit shit at the end of the day and money was tight) I was still rooting for Coldplay in 2002. I found In My Place, like Yellow, charmingly four-square. The main riff was nursery-rhyme idiotic - like something Ringo would come up with if he had taken a couple of guitar lessons. Charming. The chorus started with Chris going ‘Yeeeeeaaaaahhh’ in falsetto. Charming. I still didn’t bother with their album when it arrived, although I bought that single. Then a turn came. I had just started working in Debenhams when The Scientist was released. I remember clearly the first time I heard it - Radio 1 breakfast was on in the mornings before the store opened and the song came loud and clear over the tannoy speakers. I recall thinking “wow, this is going to be bigger than Wonderwall” when I heard the lovely chorus come round a second time. I am not sure why my mind singled out Oasis’ signature tune for the comparison - it’s possible that I made some connection between those two songs’ blending of the directly sentimental and the obscure (‘wonderwalls’/‘science’). Perhaps I merely imagined legions of idiots hacking out guitar versions at house parties forever. In any case I was wrong; The Scientist wasn’t anything like that big, although it certainly continued Coldplay’s momentum towards superstardom. A second thought, however, came when the song had concluded. I felt that the game had been given up rather easily. The bridge, turned out to be not a bridge but an outro that went round and round like a broken toy; a nothing piece of guitar-chugging bolstered by a nothing bit of wordless cooing by young Chris. This was beyond songwriting naivety - it seemed to me that something like cynicism had reared its head. With the release of third single ‘Clocks’ much of my goodwill towards Coldplay vanished. It was a song I disliked immediately, and time has taught me to despise it. Coldplay batter the listener with that rotten, obnoxiously mundane piano riff. The song was just more procedural sticking together of Coldplay Blox (including the now mandatory falsetto chorus). Although we were spoiled with an actual bridge, it was a musical non sequitur - lumped in there clumsily; like a leftover from a different song. But how horrifying it was, over years, to watch THAT song take on a life that resembled Wonderwall’s omnipresence. Every time I saw a young person sit down at a piano, whether in a school practice room, at a house party, an airport or some other public space that had been so equipped, I learned to brace myself for the inevitable kicking. As with the widespread popular fascination with the dismal riff from the White Stripe’s ‘Seven Nation Army’, I was left not only baffled but profoundly alienated. It was like when so much of the rest of society dedicated the beginning of 2007 to watching YouTube footage of Saddam Hussein being hanged to death. Why was everyone watching that? Why on earth would they want to? Participating in this cultural moment was impossible for me; I wouldn’t demean myself by watching snuff videos even if I found, to my dismay, that I had some urge to. Clocks’ popularity is just like that - supposedly civilised people leering at the twitching corpse of rock music. Of course, there is probably worse on the album than Clocks. ‘A Whisper’ has a whiff of The Verve about it. That last full minute of one stupid bar going round and round may represent the absolute pits of this record. It’s the musical equivalent of a 16 year old carrying a tray of drinks for the first time in their life - the fearful concentration that goes into the completion of a simple task; the slow stiffness with which that task is completed. Coldplay really are poor players, even on their second album. This weekend I mulled over a more precise comparison between Coldplay and Radiohead; perhaps the empirical formula for Coldplay’s musical DNA was ‘Planet Telex and High and Dry’ but even that analytical commonplace rang false. The drums and bass alone in the first minute of Planet Telex refute any comparison between the two bands. I must concede in the end that Coldplay are, to their credit and their shame, their own thing and they always were - even back when fools like me imagined them, pompously, to be a sort of benign child’s tribute act to a musical tradition in which they could only faintly aspire to significant participation. Whether indulging early Coldplay by infantilising them was an honest mistake, the wheel turned and Coldplay got even when, over the course of the next quarter of a century, they revealed all of us to be the true infants; always hungry for maudlin lullabies, incapable of demanding better from ‘rock music’ than the same procedural, square sentimentality with slightly different musical packaging as they went along. Coldplay still seem like nice chaps, as they should, for they put more effort into seeming like nice chaps than they do into any of their music. But far from rooting for them I can’t listen to their music without discomfort - pain even. Every track, even Yellow and In My Place, now seems to me a signifier less of anything gained by our culture than of precious things irrevocably lost. And it’s all shit as well. 1/5
If someone I know showed up at my door with tickets to a Coldplay concert and said, "bro, you gotta go with me," I'd probably go and have a fine time. If two tickets to a Coldplay concert were on the other side of a fence and I had to stretch a lot to reach them, I'd probably just leave them on the ground. It's Coldplay. It's fine. I think I listened to the whole thing, but it's hard to remember. I get they have a huge cultural impact. I can't really go lower than a 3, because it's so inoffensive, but it's also hard to go any higher.

Coldplay were decent back in the day, they have so much promise, before Chris Martin became the worlds most irritating bell sniff. What an album this is, the big tracks are so good, it falls of a bit on the second half of the album, but first 5 tracks are great. Best Track: God put a smile upon your face

This is one of my favorite albums. God Put a Smile, A Rush of Blood, Politik, Scientist…. So many I’ll give it a 9/10 solely because it truly is the sum of its parts- individually there are songs that removes from the album are just “good” but not great like Warning and Amsterdam.
I like some of Coldplay….they have this very laidback feel as humans which I like….seem like happy people BUT I need to be in the mood. I don’t feel as though the actual music is that special and it’s more of the vibe I like at times.

Me gustó bastante, desde que vi que era de Coldplay ya tenía expectativas altas y la verdad es que las cumplieron. Tiene una vibra emocional que atrapa un montón, y como ya conocía algunas canciones, se me hizo aún más disfrutable. Es de esos álbumes que conectas fácil y seguro volvería a escuchar.
Coldplay is for a very different crowd than I. It’s hard to enjoy and band that doesn’t use distortion as a weapon and reverb to fill the gaps so that the sound is both raw and live. Coldplay is essentially Steely Dan for millennials. The effect of sanding rough edges off every track leaves essentially a lifeless mess. This is not to say that there isn’t some good songwriting. There is. It’s hard not to deny the appeal of songs like The Scientist or Clocks because they follow the formula and Chris Martin sings them well enough so that CEOs who are cheating on their spouse will willingly attend with their girlfriend to an evening of wildly predictable piano driven soft rock. Safe. This is safe music for old people. People who will swear this is the best show they have ever seen. Safe, except for when they put your cheating CEO face on a jumbotron and put your cheating ass to the world. You become a meme. Lose your job. You know safe. This is just an average record. Live dangerously. Pass on this. 3/5

Enjoyed the whole project the hits definitely aged well for them.
There's nothing inherently wrong with the album. It's just that this one, like all of Coldplay's music in my opinion, is safe, mainstream music for people who just want background noise.
The Coldplay band must be absolutely bored on stage ... that was a really really long 54 minutes.

This has some incredible songs.
One of those times when I say, “Oh. So that’s who does that song.” Pretty bland overall. These songs kinda sound like shoegaze without the gaze. So just ‘shoe.’ Exciting eh?
UNDERRATED.

i mean it’s coldplay?? clocks scientist and politik were standouts. just easy listening without really thinking about much
They’re all great tracks, but my favourite on this album has to be ‘God Put a Smile upon Your Face’. But there aren’t any bad tracks on this album, so as far as I’m concerned, it gets a rare 5-star rating...

I will admit to recoiling in horror a little upon being faced with the prospect of listening to a Coldplay album. I'll also admit that A Rush Of Blood To The Head served as a reminder that early Coldplay, before they descended into full-on stadium pop rock, can be pretty good. Bonus shout out to the hypnotically pleasing animated album artwork on Apple Music.
So I have adopted the GoodReads rating system (thank you Nic). I would say it's quite typical of Coldplay that some of the songs are very mehhh and some of them are very good (even great?) songs that I Really Like. I guess this averages out at a Like.

They get some hate but this album along with everything up to Viva is pretty solid. This was a great morning album.
