The Genius Of Ray Charles
Ray CharlesWhat a beautiful, gentle album. "Alexander's Ragtime Band" was one of my voice lesson songs. I never knew it was a Ray Charles song!! This album is aptly named, "The Genius..." because it really is.

I hate that South Park was my first introduction to Joy Division. Their impression was so spot on it’s all I can hear. Some of the songs are poppy/ but a lot sounds the same.
Another band with a lead singer with a silly/ distinct voice. I like this album a lot more than I thought i would, but his voice is so cartoonish!! The opening bells sound was definitely sampled by Daft Punk,
I enjoyed this album much more than I anticipated. The second half is stronger than the first. definitely weird, and cohesive. (and another weird voiced singer)
I knew most of these songs. the ones I didn't i liked, but a few sounded like other songs. "May this be love" = "Angel" for the first few moments at least.
Not for me, but I can appreciate the artistry.
meh- I don't get it. mid vocals, repeating melodies & instrumentals. outdated, misogynistic lyrics.
This is a novelty act, right? Nobody listens to this earnestly, right? So annoying.
This was a weird and beautiful musical journey. I see where the Bojack theme was influenced. I've never heard of Charles Mingus before today.
A good pop-punk album. its fun to think that this was coming out the same time as Nirvana. what a beautiful/ transitional time for rock.
I liked this fine, but don't feel like I'd listen to it through again. It feels like a moment in time. the casualness of the album really dates it. But I mostly enjoyed the album.
I have been putting off listening to this album. I HATED I Believe In A Thing Called Love in 2003 and was dreading listening to more of this silly-voiced novelty act. There were a few guitar riffs that I enjoyed, but overall, my original assessment was correct.
Listening to it once through was enough with me. His flow is beautiful, and the timbre of his voice is beautiful. Some of the beats were obnoxious and I didn't catch all the lyrics. It's amazing that I've never heard of someone with 14M monthly listeners
This album was haunting and at times boring. I loved the lyrics that I tuned in to, but for most of the album i was just thinking about how this man died two weeks later.... and he sounds like it.
ELO is classic fun. I Turn To Stone and Mr. Blue Sky are two of my favorite songs of all time. I don't know if I've ever listened to this album all the way through. It got weird, but I held on, and it was worth it!
I hated this album. I hated it a lot more than I thought I would. Its theatrical in the most amateur way. His voice is bad; the songs are bad. It's just a weird novelty act. I want my 47 minutes back!
I've never heard of this band, but I've definitely heard their big song. The album is a fun listen. Its definitely got some talking heads, Police, & Blondie influences (or is Haircut 100 influences of those bands? not sure which came first). Having me listen to a 3 hour long extended cut 40th anniversary album was unnecessary, but I did it!
This was such a random album to pick. its southern rock/ Jethro Tull. Very late- 60's. very generic.
The Rolling Stones are boring. One or two of their acoustic songs that I'd never heard before sounded nice, but i just don't get them. it took me a few tries to get all the way through the album.
I've heard of this band before but don't think I've ever listened to them. it's fine reggae and clearly on influence on modern ska music and Subline. It didn't change my life though and I won't be revisiting this album.
I've never listened to this album or really Depeche Mode and I really like it. it's like, proto-NIN. spooky and fun with good beat/ sound effects. I've listened to this album at least 3 times through today.
PJ Harvey has always been an illusive listen. I really enjoy female-fronted rock adjacent music, but never got into PJ. Listening to an entire album I get it more. I dont think I will revisit her work but I appreciate her work.
I knew a lot of songs on this album. U2 is generic. Bono’s voice is generic. There were some great guitar licks and drums and arrangements. Bono will always be number 2
I really wanted to like this, but I was just bored the whole time. It's typical 1970's easy listening pop rock. meh.
I love this album. It's interesting musically, moody, & sexy.

Norah Jones has a beautiful voice. this album reminds me of our family vacation in Oceanside. We rented someone's condo and they had this album, and I played it over and over. (This was way before Air bnb) Nostolgia aside, a lot of the songs sound the same and I found myself not really paying attention at some points.
I didn't like this. I had to force myself to listen to it though. I get that Elvis like, changed music but I just don't get it. 2 stars for being iconic but really my heart says 1.
its a pretty typical 1969/ Hippie album. it's nice for background music but certainly not earch-shifting.
beautiful harmonies, and a lovely time capsule with the skits.
I love standards and I have performed many of these songs before. There are many misogynistic undertones but that maybe adds to its charm. this was certainly a moment in time.
Another 1960's generic-sounding album. trying very hard to have the Bob Dylan inflections. nothing inspiring here.
I was excited to listen to this, but I was very disappointed. Every chorus for every song on this album, I expected them to break into "pretty in pink"...it all sounded the same.
I thought Iggy Pop was a punk guy. this is weird/ artsy adult contemporary bs. nope.
I had to pause before writing anything because all I could think was "what the heck did I just listen to?" It was weird in the worst way. very dated. Trying to be mainstream/ futuristic but came across pandering and like cultural appropriation. I gave one extra star because King of Pain & Wrapped Around your Finger are jams.
The harmonies- the organ- the chill, jammy guitar solos. the HITS. Cheers to Steely Dan!
Killer guitar riffs and a Muppet voice.
I've never listened to this album all the way through, and I don't know why. James Taylor has such a calming voice, and his writing is so vivid. loved this album.
Not for me, but I can appreciate what this artist is doing.
Another that's not for me, but I can appreciate what the artist is doing. Sorry, mom!
There are like 4 lyrics in this 44-minute album. The repetitiveness of it really annoyed me after a while. Again, I can appreciate what Mr. Waters is doing, and understand the influence his music has had on generations after him, but I don't like it.
Beautiful voice- but most songs sound the same. I really love "Don't you worry 'bout a thing". I found the little skit interesting. they're a staple in the hip-hop genre. Did Stevie start this tradition?
Generic 60's pop- sounds very dated for '76. Trying to look like John Lennon. Heavily reliant on reverb. This has been one of the hardest albums to get through so far.
Harmonies, Whimsy, Rock...this album has everything! I love imagining my mom in the room as "Bohemian Rhapsody" is plaid live in the US for the first time. what an incredible experience...
I appreciate what they're doing, but this brand of soft indie isn't for me.
