Suede
SuedeNot sure how this made it. One of the most boring Brit pop albums
Not sure how this made it. One of the most boring Brit pop albums
Good free jazz but the intros to the songs are way too long
Hauntingly beautiful and sorrowful album. Each song breaks your heart ver and over. Such a follow up to midnight vultures.
A true masterpiece from the 80s. Sounds nothing like anything else that was going on then.
Rip roaring rocker! I forgot how talented these musicians were. Each song just pushes the boundaries in showmanship.
Such an innovative album.
Kinda boring generic 70s folk. Could have been a Joni Mitchell album. Love and affection was the stand out track
Great classic 60s blues based rock album. Janis’s voice is definitely unique and you either love it or hate it.
Album starts out a bit slow. Sting’s voice just doesn’t do it for me. Luckily Stuart Copeland’s drumming is amazing. Bring on the night is a great pop song. Wonder if it was ever released as a single. The bed is too big without you, classic track with a reggae feel. Another album that has gotten better as you get further.
Such an integral album in the evolution of music. A lot of people say this is the birth of grunge but I view it more as a pop album with punk aesthetics. From the opener “Smells like teen spirit” to the slow closer “something in the way, “ this album fills every box. Territorial pissings is the most underrated song on the album. Essential listening to anyone wanting to under the toils of Gen X.
Great folk songwriting. The organ parts really make this album sing. Much more electric sounding than other Bob Dylan albums. Good album but not the best I have heard of Dylan. Leopard skin pill box hat is the stand out track along with Visions of Johanna
From the first note to the last note, this album is a sonic masterpiece. With illusions of nightmares and dreamscapes, this album left me awestruck. I like me some Black Sabbath but have only really listened to it sporadically. Songs 1-9, not a weak moment. Every note is so deliberate and comes with so much energy. All instruments are played masterfully including Ozzy’s vocals. The drum fills take it to another level with bass pushing the rhythm forward. The lead guitar dances all over the tracks. Planet Caravan is a dark horse for best song on the album.
Beautifully written songs and excellent harmonies. There are some stand out tracks on this album like "America" and "Mrs. Robinson" being the most well know. The production is a little too slick and the inclusion of strange interludes and sound tricks is a bit of a turn off. Overall, though, pretty good all album.
Powerful opening track. I didn’t really ever listen to how great of a voice Beyoncé has. Drunk in love is ok but Jay-z almost ruins it all with dumb lines like “I have your breasts for breakfast.” Luckily “Blow” is a banger of a Prince track. Album starts dragging a little bit until a gem of a pop song “Jealous”. “Rocket” could be a lost song from D’angelo’s “Voodoo” (probably because that is where the sample is from. "Heaven" is a beautiful piano ballad and I loved the "Flawless with Nicki Minaj" remix better than the original. A bit up an up and down album but she does have a wonderful sound.
Not to many exciting notes. “Ageispolis” is pretty good. “Green Calx” really changes the album’s direction in a different and interesting way.
Soaring melodies and backing music that fit Ray’s vocals perfectly
This album is so punk and the fact that it incorporates folk instruments from Ireland is pretty astounding. The songs have great themes. The vocals are unique and fit what they are trying to do. However, as the album goes, songs start blending and sounding the same. Cool concept but I just needed more variety.
Very unique and chaotic take on jazz.
Great album! Reminds me a lot of Television. Hard to imagine this album came out in the 70s. Reminds me of early punk/new wave with almost a touch of indie rock
An absolutely beautiful album from the singer songwriter. While some people may prefer the more acoustic driven work, this album is a sonic masterpiece from start to finish. The production is top notch and I would dare to put this up next a Beatles album. With the starting track “son of Sam” to Happiness is a gandola man, each track offers something special and tragic at the same time.
Very good songwriter. Odd that to start the album I like only the even numbered songs “Freeze tag” and “Small blue things” are pretty outstanding and she has a great voice. “Knight moves” is absolutely delightful and reminds me a bit of Ani Di Franco ( and yes I do know Suzanne was before Ani). It was nice to also see that her catalogue is deeper than "Tom's Diner."
This album is a little confusing. I see the hard rock elements but that damn flute throws me off every song. A lot of the songs seem to have Christian undertones but I gotta say that Hymn 43 is a banger.
What a beautiful staring starting song “Cherry coloured funk”. Beautifully crafted soundscapes with a touch of 80s regalia but definitely a different sound than anything else from 1990. “Iceblink luck” is another amazing track. Amazing shoe gaze
Interesting start to the album. Two of the first three songs included saxophone and clarinet which I did not expect. Obviously “tainted love” is the lead track which is catchy. “Chips on my shoulder” is another track that has a driving beat and utilizes synthesizers to an excellent extent. Got pretty repetitive
Always wondered why the kinks never got to the level as the other British Invasion groups. When you put out amazing albums like this one it’s hard to see. The album is so very British, from the theme and title to the many different tracks including British colloquialisms and humor.
A true masterpiece from the 80s. Sounds nothing like anything else that was going on then.
Sounds like a typical big production 70s rock album. Very piano driven which is nice. Stand out tracks are “Bennie and the jets” and “Dirty girl.” The rest is pretty so so
What a powerful pop album. With the opening 2 tracks being mega hits, the album keeps up a frenetic pace of great song after great song. After learning the context behind the album and it having to do with her divorce, the songs have a lot more meaning. With beautiful soaring vocals and the perfect piano accompaniment, this album surprises.
Good album but a little slick for my tastes when it comes to the white stripes
Such a classic album. This album is the pinnacle of all Beastie boys. It touches on everything from their hip hop roots to hardcore punk to beautiful instrumentals. This album has soul, humor, angst and passion. From top to bottom this album flows perfectly.
The album is a bit trite. Surely excellent guitars and vocals but didn’t really move the needle. Ernie is one of the best rock mascots, though.
I really wanted to love this album since it was recently added to a saddest album list but I just could not get into it completely. It had its moments and there was one track with some just killer drums but overall it just didn’t hit the notes. The songs were great I think the vocals were a bit lacking.
The instrumentation of these songs is great. The twangy movement of the guitars really drives the tracks. Beautiful guitar work that is not over the top but fits the songs perfectly. The vocals sound a little like JJ Cale to me but seem adequate.
They can’t all be winners. This album I found pretty boring. Most of the songs sounded very similar and while I appreciate her vocal range, it just did not move the needle.
This album had me so conflicted. There were points that I wasn’t really sure about this album and then there were other points where I said to myself “this album is a masterpiece.” All the interlaying sounds work together in such a way that I could see people giving up on it by giving it just a surface listen but the further I got the more I understood it. “Trouble down south” was my favorite track.
Talk about an album that did not age well. Very misogynistic and oozing with machismo. The violence alone can make one grit their teeth and ask “ is he still talking about killing his ex?” As for lyrics and beats I think his rhyme patterns were good but most of the songs had the same up and down flow to them.
Decent folk album compared to what else was coming out that year of 1969. It then makes a hard right turn when Nico comes in and “murder mystery” happens. If I had to describe art rock in 1 song this would be it.
Amazing fusion of Latin music and modern hip hop. I loved this album so much be it is such a cultural crossover and hits on so many levels.
The epitome of gangster rap! The album is so essential to the evolution of rap music. The verses are on point painting and celebrating the gangster lifestyle and the hooks are off the chain. The beats are focused and drive the tracks in the right direction. Tons of great guests. Only complaint is that the album starts to get a little redundant towards the end but still a great listen.
Essential thrash metal album. Intricately composed and lyrics that match the destruction and devastation of sound that is coming forth.
This album is the epitome of early 2000s gangsta rap. Great beats and some excellent hooks but the message gets a little played out as the album continues.
Such a unique voice and the music just fits perfectly with it. Great use of folk instruments from Ireland and it just sounds totally different than anything else from that era.
Kinda boring and basic pop album. She seems to use the same vocal flourishes throughout the whole album. Kind of a one trick pony. The voice sounds good but it’s not really enough to save the album.
I kept going back and forth on the album. On the one hand it had a lot of catchy songs and almost every one was played on the radio. Bbbbbuuuuuuttttt I just can’t get over how here voice sounds. Bbbbbuuuuuttttt then I really like her theme of breaking up. Since the musicians are also pretty good I will up it by one.
I wanted to like this album but it just didn’t fit my day.
Amazing musicianship but the vocals sounded flat and almost like I was listening to the same song over and over.
As for a debut album this on is pretty good. Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 are stand out tracks. The album though sounds a little disjointed, especially compared to their amazing sophomore album demon days.
Hauntingly beautiful and sorrowful album. Each song breaks your heart ver and over. Such a follow up to midnight vultures.
Not a fan. Sounds like a throwaway Who record that never should have been made. Nothing that interesting and the odd switches in music just turned me off.
Great album and I was very surprised how much I liked it. Reminded me a bit of a cross between the cure and the jam. Pretty in pink was my favorite song.
As a college student in the early 2000s, I LOVED J5. This album is so cleanly produced with amazing lyrical content that hits on all levels, society, love, hurt and enjoyment of life. Though I prefer Quality Control as my favorite J5 album, this album just rips from track 1 all the way through the end.
Not really too sure about this album. To mean it sounds like the artist wanted to make a Michael Jackson album but didn’t have the chops or songs. The synth work is pretty good but when I think of 80s pop music, I think there has to be about 150 albums above this one.
What an amazing and ambitious project! A rock opera that hits on so many levels and superior musicianship across the board.
Great album and definitely top tier. Beautiful songs that just meld together to create a free flowing album.
Interesting choice that I never would have picked on my own, especially based upon n the cover. I actually quite enjoyed it. The xylophone and accordion had a perfect balance.
The album stared out pretty boring but “Seeing things” had amazingly soulful backing vocals and “Hard to handle” is a ripping southern rocker.
Rip roaring rocker! I forgot how talented these musicians were. Each song just pushes the boundaries in showmanship.
Kinda boring. Seemed like the were a wannabe Black Sabbath with a less talented roster.
First 2 songs are standard thrash metal songs that aren’t really distinguishable. However “I am the law” tears the first two songs up. Great transitions, vocals and lyrics.
Genuinely surprised at how good this album was. Great blues based album and not the pop country. I was definitely caught judging a book by its cover. While not necessarily my style. It was a well done album for sure.
I almost gave it a two because of Chester bennington’s voice but then the other started rhyming terribly again. Very angsty without enough substance. I also didn’t think the do work did it much favors
I mean it’s David Bowie and I give him some credit for creating these ethereal compositions but I really couldn’t get into this album at all.
An odd coincidence about Depeche Mode, is that but my wife and I each dated someone that was obsessed with Depeche Mode. That being said this album is full of wonderful synths, heartbreak and longing. There are definitely some stand out tracks but unfortunately after a while it starts to become a little one note for me.
Very surprised by this album. Lots of really good tracks. Some sounded the same but there were some others that really went above and beyond
I was super surprised by this album. It was awesome. Almost every song seemed like it was from a different genre. And not only that , they were good songs. It reminded me of Ween Chocolate and Cheese but not as brown.
Seemed like a standard 90s electronic album. Pretty good but nothing made me want to go back to it.
I really didn’t want to rank another Who album so high but almost every song was a banger. All four of them are so talented that this album just moves sonically.
What can you say but beautiful! This voice can move a room and the arrangements are top notch. The first half of the album is astounding. Once you get to the b side, it’s still all there but something is just missing and I can’t put my finger one. Great album but a few tracks away from 5 stars for me.
I have never really like the eagles but I never knew why. Now I do. Every song on this album sounds like someone else. First track-pure praise league, track 2 witchy woman- stardust by csny. This album just doesn’t sound original at all and the lyrics are trash. The musicianship doesn’t save since nothing is really astounding.
Tried everything in my power not to give this a five but it is such an interesting and innovative album that is such a far cry from their previous albums.
Standard shoeless. I have heard better and I have heard worse. Not as impressive as Loveless
I love 2000s indie music but this is an album that I could never understand the hype. I tried the album back then and I tried it now and nothing really stood out. Sorry Karen O it just wasn’t for me.
Though this song has my favorite arctic song on it “from ritz to rubble”. I think that there are not complete albums by them that should have maybe made the list (and maybe they will)
Had high expectations for this one. A bombastic sound but everything seemed one note
She had a good voice and the concept is good, I just found the album a bit one note.
Some fine funk and soul. I wish there were more vocals on the album but I get it because it is a soundtrack.
This album makes so much more sense when you know it was his last album. Though none of the catchy hooks or choruses, it still flows beautifully and for a final album ever is up there.
Exceptional rhythms and Afro-beats. The saxophones and horns on this album are amazing. My main knock on it is that the political driven lyrics get a bit repetitive after a while in these longer songs.
Some great tracks but as my friend put it, world’s best blues bar band. Most of the songs seemed like borrowed elements from other blues musicians that in my opinion did it better.
I really tried not to like this album but every song that you got further into the album just got better. There were a couple of ok songs but the stories and consciousness of the rest were just amazing. I love both “Push, Kick” versions. Pleasantly surprised that I never heard this one and glad I did.
Ugh this album really did nothing for me. The instrumentation was blah with a lot 80s production. With her beautiful voice it could have been so much more with some 70s soul. Very disappointing.
After being surprised by how much I liked 21, 25 was a bit more predictable. Sure it was about heartbreak and yes Adele’s voice was boomeing but it just didn’t have the staying power of her previous album.
For a 5 song album, this really checks a lot of boxes in terms of innovation and creating imagery not only with the lyrics but with the instrumentation as well.
Nice change of pace. A very blues driven album with jazz undertones. I love the b3 organ throughout the album. My main issue was that it started sounding like the same song over and over.
Ehhhhhh. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it.
Typically a highly rated album on most critic’s list but I just feel like this album alright. A moody Morrissey is heartbroken. Lyrically and musically this album doesn’t seem to push any boundaries.
What a stellar album. An essential industrial album. This album has great tracks likes Hurt, piggies, Reptilian, and closer. However there are some tracks that just don’t do it for me. The Fragile and hesitation marks seem more complete albums to me.
Pretty surprised on how much I liked this album. I never gave Nico much credit, thing she was just an art student that joined a band but this album was alright. I wouldn’t say world beater but a pleasant album.
Such a great and classic 90s Britrock album. An essential. A few flaws but man this album hits.
Art rock that I just could not get into. Reminded me of A cross between avant garde Bowie and John Frusciante’s first album.
An album that every other sound was pretty good. The vocals, just like the last Kate Bish that I heard were all the same range and I just kinda got bored with this album quickly.
I didn’t know what to think about this album. I loved the hip hop elements and she had a very unique style. Personally I am not a big of the beats and backing tracks.
Much better than the last Smiths album I got. I am still not a huge fan of Morrisey’s voice but musically it was pretty good.
I had an ex that really liked this band. I thought album was going pretty good but then it kept going and going and going. They needed to edit that track list a bit more and it would have been a 4.
I understand that this album was essential in the evolution of hip hop but I just didn’t like it that much. The beats were a bit stale and unfortunately the lack of French trains I have did not get the message he was trying to convey.
What an amazing album! This album is one of the best Neil young albums I have ever heard. It was almost a 5 but I know that there has to be at least one or two more Neil albums that top it. Great album and glad it made the list.
Great goth album! So stand out tracks for sure. My only downer on this album was that I kept thinking it would get heavier like a Type O Negative album. Still pretty solid.
A rip rocking basis for what rock and roll would evolve into. Great piano based blues. Sounds just started sounding the same near the end of the listen.
A good picture of the 60s psychedelic rock.
Absolutely gorgeous album. Almost perfect. Last couple of songs don’t sound as perfect as the first 8 but they are still great.
An exceptional live album. It’s amazing how many songs I recognized. My real issue is that it was so short and the honky to k piano just started getting old.
This album did not move the needle for me. It sounded like culturally appropriated music for a band that was constantly on vacation and wanted to let world know about where they had been. Lyrically and musically nothing seemed dynamic or awe inspiring. It was just there.
Another unimpressive Rolling Stones album. Yes it did have a few high points but nothing stood out as outstanding. An attempt at making a stripped down southern blues album that just did not work for me.
Not even sure what it was I listened to. I didn’t know if I liked it or just tolerated it. I guess it was ok.
Lots of ups and downs on this album. I really liked the lyrics and the backing video calls were on point. I just really didn’t like the lead singers voice that much.
Nearly perfect album. Only reason I didn’t give it a full 5 is because I prefer amnesiac.
Great country album and wonderful story telling. Got a bit preachy at the end but pretty good album
Great change of pace. Loved the beats but wish there weee more vocals
I can understand the appeal of this album but it just started getting boring in the end.
It had some highs and some lows but definitely funky to the bone. I wish the song writing was better but musically it was superb.
One of the most influential albums of all time. If it wasn’t for Four sticks this could have been a perfect album. Thunderous drums, ripping guitars, howling vocals and beautiful bass lines, this album had it all.
Another uninspired and boring 90s electronica album
Great album! Reminds me of an updated beach boys
Great rock album that starts out great and kinda of peters off at the end.
Pretty surprising album. Reminded a little bit of the velvet underground. Sounded a bit similar by the end but a quality album through and through.
Pretty good album but I prefer Townes van zandt. Also many borrowed songs that didn’t sound too different from the originals.
I know this is a seminal album in the progression to alternative hip hop but there just didn’t seem to be enough for me to go on.
I don’t want to invite the wrath of swifties but compared to some of her other albums, this one just didn’t move the needle. Standard pop album that didn’t really stand out and the vocal range seemed pretty basic
So I tried this album a while back but did not like it that much. On second listen I am blown away. Great vocal range and great song writing. No wonder Chris Cornell had such admiration for this dude.
Good album and an essential one I. The history of punk rock. Just not their best album
Pretty good 70s punk album. Nothing to special.
I went back and forth on this album a lot. I think it was very forward for its time, the songs are very catchy and the fact that they had sustained success (though moderate) because of this album does a lot. I just convinced myself to give it another star.
Not that inspiring
First two songs had me thinking that this album was going to be pretty bad but Boxcars brought me back into the fold. That was the best track. The rest was underwhelming
Amazing album with hints of world music tied into new wave/punk.
Not a lot there. Just uninspired
Absolutely perfect album. Transcends time. Such a vunerable voice and such a balance between acoustic and electric instruments with incredible song writing on top of it.
Definitely a quintessential garage rock album from the early 2000s
Surprisely good album. Very different from anything else one the list. I am sure some people didn’t like it but what a pleasant surprise
As a massive Pearl Jam fan, I really like this album and it is what got me into the band. Lots of classic tracks but also a couple of misses
Beautiful Brit rock album
Boring electronic…next album please
Alright
Liked it to start but then songs just started sounding the same.
A fine album but blur has others that I find better
Started off great and then dropped off as you got later in the album
In my eyes one of the most perfect albums. Just so many ups and downs and the musical layers are amazing!
Not sure how this made it. One of the most boring Brit pop albums
Better than I expected. I lived some of the other tracks after hungry like the wolf
Good album but I have heard better talking heads than this
Beautiful album that I only recently rediscovered in the last 6 months. VCR and islands are amazing tracks.
Great early album and the song off the wall was great. A little inconsistent even though his voice was quite amazing theoughout
Astonishingly beautiful and transcendent album.
Essential Wu tang at its finest
Great album but I prefer fear of music.
Not a bad song on this album. Solid from cover to cover and as much as I prefer melloncolie, this one soars. I know some people don’t like corgans voice but I love it.
Don’t know how this made the list
I liked it but it sounded way to similar to Fiona Apple
Sonically a great album just couldn’t connect with it
Good metal, just started sounding the same
I really like it to start but all the weird cuts didn’t show off all the musicianship of the band
Good album. Reminded me a bit of Devi
Could have been a five but his version of tutti frutti is weak compared to little richard
Great political punk album.
Ok but nothing mind blowing
Pop album…that’s about all I got
Boring
Utter rubbish
Amazing pioneer of west coast gangsta rap
Absolutely classic start to finish.
Pretty alright
Absolutely stellar album from start to finish. Hard to believe this was their debut. I like it better than IV
There are 2 much better pixies albums. This one is alright
Decent but couldn’t latch onto anything
Started off hot with the first two tracks and then kinda fizzled out.
Good doors album but a bunch of dude
2 good songs, 1 ok, rest boring pop ditties
I wanted to like this more. Reminded me a bit of Joni Mitchell
Generic60s psychedelic pop
Didn’t seem much more spectacular than any other bjork album.
Great dc hardcore punk album
Amazing folk album
2 star for two decent songs
Solid but nothing exceptional
Quintessential psychedelic rock album. It’s no acid bold as love but pretty damn good
The first disc was amazing. Was thinking about five stars but then it started dragging a bit. Still an amazing album
Alright David Bowie…exactly what I expected with no surprises
I tried…I really did
Good reggae album and it is a good intro but still pretty average
Garbage
Great album but I feel roseland ballroom is just so much better
One of the better electronic albums but still not my cup of tea
Great political rap album. Terminator x is underrated in just how much the dj used to play a part in hip hop
Some catchy tunes just didn’t feel it
Decent old school hard rock just not for me
Not a redeemable quality about it
Great sounding album through and through
Probably there best album. Very enjoyable
I liked this album though I feel I need listen to it a bunch more times to get it
Nothing too special
I really liked it. Just wasn’t blown away
Pretty good but definitely not superfly
Absolutely amazing album
Good thrash metal album
Classic pop punk album that I remember listening to on repeat on cassette.
Good album but doesn’t hold a candle to mos def or nas
Didn’t really do much. Generic swamp rock
Good syncopated jazz
Absolutely stunning
Interesting combo of what seems the Beatles and the kinks
Alright album
Surprised by this album but it just didn’t hit on all levels
Good album for the times but I don’t think it holds up
I really wanted to like this more. Great story and the first song sounds a bit like the black keys
Essential 90s east coast rap. It tells a story that never gets old
Great would just started sounding a bit the same
Good free jazz but the intros to the songs are way too long
Jazz at its finest
Pretty interesting r & b album. Little stories in between songs helped the album move along
Unique poo album from the lates 80s
I typically hate British rappers. I didn’t hate this one but I still didn’t find anything extraordinary about it
Some Stand out tracks but sounded like white boy blues…missing the soul
I loved this album when it came out. It was so different than anything else on the alternative landscape. Listening to it now there are a lot of hits but also quite a few misses
Generic 70s hard rock live album. Nothing really set it apart
Decent hip hop album but not world changing
One of the better Sinatra albums
Great rhythmic album. Sounds a lot like all the other Fela I have heard
Roots of indie rock
Superb sophomore album
Had another album by these guys and this one just didn’t live up to the other
Great early metal jam album
Quintessential live album with all the hits.
Decent
Good album just nothing unremarkable about
The crossover component of this album is nice but a lot of the songs had a similar hokey feel to them
Great album that hit me at the right moment. End of the album gets a little muddied but pretty stellar
I get the significance of the album it just sounded a bit one note for me
Punk/ electronic fusion at its finest
A top notch bossa nova album.
Not very good at all and I usually love albums from the 90s
Schlock hair metal
It was a good album for the time, though not very great
Very relaxing but sounded the same throughout album
Average hip hop album. Nothing stood out as revolutionary
Great album and inspired a lot of music to come
Surprised by how many sounds I knew and liked but never knew the band or album. Great surprise
I like this band but I find this album to be a bit average. I am sure I will get one of their other albums at some point but just not overly impressed
Great pop album. Just seemed a little long for me
Amazing Bob Dylan solo. Would gotten five except a couple of songs sounded very similar
One redeemable song that saved it. Western music that just didn’t swing
While I am a big dinosaur jr fan, there are several albums I would rate higher
Loved the title track and then everything sounded the same
Pretty good blues album. The star power is undeniable
Campy lyrics with a generic 60s sound
Not what I expected. More punk blues which was very interesting
Beautiful folk album with soaring harmonies
Perfect album from start to finish and if you don’t know the background on how this album came to be it is an amazing story.
For the time, this album was super innovative, showing a woman’s perspective in the rap game.
Absolute juxtaposition of their punk pop roots. The covers are splendid and the order of songs is so precise.
Weird…all I can say
I try and I try to like the smiths and I struggle to feel it.
Titans of country and they surely delivered. One of the big surprises of this project
Great album just got a little boting
Great English blues album
Surprised at how much I liked this one. A lot of different styles and had some Who-esque qualities
A supremely awesome jazz album
Utter rubbish….pressure was the only song I mildly enjoyed. The rest was a bunch of blaaaaa
As a complete album, this one is a gem. I know some people will naysay about a song or two but they all fit together completely.
