Album Summary
Deep Purple in Rock is the fourth studio album by Deep Purple, released on June 5, 1970. It was the first studio album recorded by the Mark II line-up of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. Work on In Rock began shortly after Gillan and Glover joined the band in June 1969, with rehearsals at Hanwell Community Centre. The music was intended to be loud and heavy, and accurately represent the group's live show. Recording took place at various studios around London in between extensive touring, during which time songs and arrangements were honed into shape. In Rock was the band's breakthrough album in Europe and peaked at No. 4 in the UK, remaining in the charts for over a year. By contrast, it under-performed in the US, where the band's Mark I albums had been more successful. An accompanying single, "Black Night" reached No. 2 in the UK, becoming their highest charting single there. The album has continued to attract critical praise as a key early example of the hard rock and heavy metal genres.

Actually much more fun than I expected. Deep Purple really do like their galloping guitars and long solos. As a big Zeppelin fan I enjoyed it.
too much for me
Psychedelic rock, not really a standout for me.
Classic
Mye kul rock her, liker godt "Speed king". Child in time kunne godt vært 10 min lenger for min del
Klink klonk klassisk rock!
Bra rock jevnt over med flere kule soloer, men savner noen skikkelige bangers
What a record! Its fast and aggressive and insanely technical. This feels like the blue print of prog, punk, glam and metal all at the same time. This music gets turned into a million different genres in the future, but when you're living in this one album, its all immersive. Its the past, future and present all in one. You can really hear all of those influences of before, especially Chicago style blues, but then they're kind of taking off into unknown territories that will become real popular in the 80s. They're playing hard into the psych of 1970s. This is fantastic. Essential listening!
8 / 10
Thought it was crap
It was okay hair metal rock
good album
Not bad, bit screechy TBH.
Hard Lovin' Man more like Hard Lovin' This Album.
Not quite my jam
Solid effort here. Been a quiet fan of Deep Purple for a while, but haven't delved into too many of their albums. This cements them as some early influence to 'metal' as a genre.
decent
More proto-metal than expected. I always thought they were more rock
just a boring drudge. I can imagine this was interesting in its time.
4-
This is a solid, reliable classic rock listen. It's not something I'm likely to come back to but I enjoyed letting it play while I was working from home today.
Not a bad album, just nothing really standing out from it. Enjoyed it though.
Imagine hearing this in 1970. Mind-blowing.
Faller dock lite på huvudsången Child in time - 5/10 Ganska oinspirerande epic. Intressant… Living wreck - 6.5/10 Inte mycket o säga? Lite trist men helt ok Hard lovin’ man - 5/10 Väldigt ointressant skrammel
Sometime over the top 70s rock is kind of fun. Probably won’t listen again though.
I liked it but it all kind of sounded the same to me. Would maybe listen again.
🎸👿🤟🏻🕶️💜
Wonderful.
Great old heavy rock and heavy metal albums. Nice mix of instrumentals and songs, loved the guitar. Didn’t do anything too fancy
It’s amazing how something that is so quintessentially 70’s created the template for hair metal in the 80’s. That being said, it’s not necessarily a good thing.
SPINAL TAP....is this!!!
I have been adding one song from each album to a playlist. For this album, I chose the shortest song.
Gute stimme sehr abwechslungsreich
I heard you like bass, so I put some bass in your bass so you can bass while you bass.
Spectacular
AAAAaaaahhhh AAAAaaahhhh AAAAAAAAA
Finally something I enjoyed listening to. This rocks.
Feel like these guys should be talked about the same as Black Sabbath. Fuckin rock n roll baby. These musicians are monsters and ole Jesus can really sing
A respectable entry in the Classic Rock canon
Neat little epic. It's an odd compilation compared to the standard, with many songs being instrument-led and the vocals taking a secondary role. I do like that though, as it makes the bouncy tunes fun and engaging for what they are. It slows briefly for Into the Fire, but still gives it plenty of operatic welly vocally. I guess it settles into a simplistic plod at times, but I forgive it. As a package it's decent and, bar some unusual organ-skating screech in Living Wreck, it skips and nudges its way into a 4. Not because it's amazing, but because as a collection of songs it delivers more than just static arena riffs and hook fests. Wild instrumental indulgence and I like it!
This prog/proto-metal album undeniably rocks, but isn't without its foibles. I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. Not necessarily because it's a bad album, I just don't think it lives up to the excellence promised by its stand-out track. It's a very early album that was still defining a sound, but it's sometimes a bit lacklustre and, at times, derivative. I don't think the album opens particularly well with 'Speed King' sounding like a mashup of every other early heavy blues rock band. The solos aren't particularly inspiring and there is lots of use of the dreaded electric organ. Then we get to the ten minute epic that is 'Child in Time'. I'll just say that a whole album of that style would be 5*. It still sounds unique and interesting fifty years later and is the exception that proves the rule for the electric organ. An early album with its ups and downs but one of the OGs of the genre.
Dark and interesting with lovely guitar work.
Deep Purple have a couple good tunes, but none of them are on here.
Absolute classic, virtuosic rock!
A perfectly fine late 70s/early 80s rock album. Can't say anything stood out to me here in the way that some tracks did from prior albums. My train of thought the entire time while listening was "Yep, that's Deep Purple."
Pretty standard middle of the road classic rock here; a good time but nothing special. Gets a bit jammy at points to mixed results. 6/10
Kind of average dad rock. +1 star for child of time
The organ player alone.
The title says it all. This album freakin' ROCKS. 4.5 bumped up to 5.
I’m at a 10. I mean, it just kicks ass. I think it’s fucked up that it took us 1,013 days to get to our first Deep Purple album on the list (0.034% odds!), and while I assumed they’d be good, I wasn’t expecting them to be this technically mesmerizing. It’s just a dazzling whirlwind of energy with drum solos, organ solos & guitar solos as far as the ear can hear & along with Ian Gillan’s absurd vocal range, it’s just impossible to not feel the energy from it. “Child in Time” might be one of the best prog rock songs I’ve ever heard in my life, & following that up with “Flight of the Rat” really solidified this album for me. Everything after those two tracks is a welcome bonus, and while it’s not as energetic as the 4 preceding it, I think it still works within the flow of the album. I don’t think there’s much more to say. It’s one you just gotta hear to truly get it, and I’m very glad we’ll get two more rounds with these guys before the list is done. It is a remarkable album, and while it’s pretty much just doing a combination of what Black Sabbath & Led Zeppelin were doing, they still manage to carve out their own identity by just being that goddamn good at it. I loved listening to it, and if “Machine Head” is supposed to be even fucking better (it’s got Smoke on the Water, after all), I’m extremely excited for it. As far as this one goes, it’s an easy 10.
Gas
Hard to go wrong with the classic lineup of Deep Purple. Very good album. I don't think much comes close to the heights of some of their very best songs, but it's just a great classic rock record by excellent musicians. Standouts: "Child in Time", "Flight of the Rat", "Living Wreck"
When the album ended I wanted more, I’ll definitely listen to more deep purple. Hard rock with some songs reminding me of Led Zeppelin’s, just great drumming guitar bass, I felt the mixing in the vocals could be improved if they brought it more to the foreground, but that’s a small nitpick, rock
Listening session: october 9th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: heard one song before Thoughts: super bombastic but the instrumentals are really good and I can see how this was influential Favourite tracks: Child in Time & Living Wreck
Some really fun guitar and key stuff happening. Not a big fan of most of the vocals. I think this album is at its best when its a bit quieter and works at building up a vibe instead of spamming licks and fills as in the intro. Hence Child in Time outdoing the rest of the album. Generally i think a lot of the songs on this album overstay their welcome for a minute or two but are otherwise decent. Just feels like it has to stretch to even hit 40 minutes. Favorites were Child in Time (still too stretched out though) and Living Wreck (cool sounds)
Very theatrical in a fun way and more complex than a lot of early hard rock. Seems like a lot of this album's content was shipped straight into prog for the next couple decades Highlights: "Child in Time", "Flight of the Rat"
Solid
Horrible cover aside this album was amazing. The perfect proto-metal album with a sound that I feel a lot of modern bands would kill to reproduce. I was a big hater on the Deep Purple live album, but takeaway all the meandering noodling found in the live album and there's really tight timeless gems.
Eh. I get the vibe but it tired me out, I guess? I've liked other Deep Purple more, so I'll round up to 3 for now.
I really liked this / had some great tracks.
High energy dad rock. Still dad rock, but hard to see this as the same band from "smoke on the water."
How it felt to start this album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9axhdicB3U
Not really my style, but some enjoyable moments. Not a bad album
Livin' Wreck is my personal pick, great musicianship all round.
I've previously heard Deep Purple's album Machine Head; and I loved it! I hope I love this one just as much! 01. Speed King The vocals are mixed really terribly on this track. Which is a shame, because this sounds sick! 02. Bloodsucker Appreciate the casual racism. Not as good as the first track, just sort of found it alright. 03. Child In Time Now we're picking it up! This is not only badass, but has the best lyrics so far as well! 04. Flight Of The Rat A weirdly funny track, lol. Badass instrumental work, too! Great front to back! 05. Into The Fire Absolutely disgusting guitar work!! Favorite instrumentation so far!! 06. Living Wreck A real boring one. Doesn't feel inspired or unique in the slightest. 07. Hard Lovin' Man Works as a closer. Doesn't do much for me, but I enjoyed it well enough. This is definitely not as good as Machine Head, in my opinion. There are some great tracks on here, but as an overall package I just find it alright.
About 40 minutes of pure unadulterated bliss. Instant dopamine booster, absolute kick ass album that is like a blueprint for every hard rock album ever.
Insane this was released in 1970. Dueling guitars, soft jazz influences, electronic organs, fuckin class. This album was my favourite so far of One Album a Day.
The name Deep Purple is actually a reference to the colour the average listener’s face goes as their body instinctively cuts off oxygen to the brain to provide merciful relief from hearing any more of this album after the second or third track. I liked the vocals though
The curse of comparing to other albums. Enjoyed this less than I thought I would.
Some real nostalgia hits here, but some versions of songs I wasn't familiar with. Child in time was twice as long as the version I had on the greatest hits CD and was worth the extra 5 minutes. A few dad-rock-dirge-fests to match makes this a 3 for me
A fascinating look at early metal.
i mean, In Japan is a clear five, but for some reasons the studio version seems just...worse
Oh no. Yeah. Not sure I am feeling this at all. So I guess this just required the right time, because yet again, I ended up enjoying this WAY more than anticipated. Spotify has a new “taste profile” feature. When I looked at mine, it declared that I am “deeply rooted in complex, guitar driven rock.” Well thank you AI! I guess Deep Purple really IS my Jam. I have been reluctant to embrace the truth of it. But at the end of the day, I would always rather listen to this than Taylor Swift. 4 Boolean: True
8/10… hard rock / proto metal / *1970
Blow the windows out with this one
Ok, so the riffs and the build are incredible. I can tell this is where the annoying 70s droin started, but this doesn't have it so I liked it
It rocked.
Much better than I thought it would be
W album cover. Imagining what went through the talks about what to make it is really funny to me. First they thought about mount rushmore, realized there were 5 members, and just stuck the 5th one on there anyways. It just such a dumb idea it works. This album is pretty short except for "Child in Time". Overall its pretty middle of the road, but it definetly has some style to it. Would not look at someone strange if they gave this a 4 or even a 5. Best Song: Speed King. Worst Song: Hard Lovin' Man.
Ripping for 1970, but didn't have big hooks that connected me to any of the songs. Loud and fast, OK 👍
This is the funniest album cover of all time. The borderline metal riffs on Deep Purple in Rock are simultaneously gritty and fluid. Fast-paced, high-energy guitar alongside slamming drums and dynamic vocals makes for an entertaining listen. Experimentation varies the sound from soft rock to hard metal. "Child in Time" is a great example of a leisurely style without being tiring. I believe there is some Jimi Hendrix influence on this album, especially in "Bloodsucker" with distorted vocals and guitar. On "Living Wreck" and "Hard Lovin' Man," an organ can be heard — a staple of psychedelic rock. The compositions are complex and intriguing, including glorious guitar solos. However, on "Hard Lovin' Man," that organ solo is atrocious.
I had a great time listening to this.
I don't think this music has stood the test of time. Today it comes across as rather ponderous. I guess it was influential in the heavy metal scene, so. apont there. The cover has a good concept but not executed terribly well!
Deep purple are one of my blind spot bands. I like all their contemporaries but I don't think I know any of their songs except Smoke On The Water. This was definitely the first full album I've listened too. I enjoyed it, kind of like a heavier KISS. But with alot more guitar solos, maybe too many guitar solos. Still a really enjoyable album, perhaps missing that one standout track to really cap it off. 3.75* rounded up to 4*
Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, virtuose Orgel, 1970 -> 5
It was hard to get through
a couple guitar solos wont do it for me. +1 star because this is listenable, as in, is very much music and dont bother me TOO much
I knew zero songs off this album going in, and my experience was better for it. Deep Purple don’t need another Smoke On The Water when they have such a strong consistent sound. Some unnecessary vocal wails, but overall enjoyed this album. Iconic cover art. 4/5
Didn't know their vocals were at all falsetto, now I can see how these guys influenced 70's rock and later metal like Iron Maiden, Dio, etc. (the Wikipedia list is 70 successful bands long). Some good groves, needs another listen...
Growing up, the only Deep Purple I knew was “Smoke on the Water” and that song from Donny and Marie (haha). But this was fantastic!
def not the worst metal i’ve heard but i don’t love it, too long- child in time was nice though
Great basic music
Bomba cak album. Svidaju mi se instrumentali, gitara bas ubija
Deep Purple is such a mood, and it’s a mood I’m often into, but they never speak to my soul the way that Zep does.
Decent rock album. I don’t like it as much as some others from this time period but it still sounds good.
Enjoyed it
Top : Child in Time Flop : Into the Fire
Man, the production is muddy even for a 70s album! There are like 2 songs that I think are actually decently produced, those being "Bloodsucker" and the best song on the album, "Child in Time". This is still pretty good for what it's worth, but I think there's a better Deep Purple album than this. This is a high 3
