Reviews (page 3 of 12)

Liked it more than I thought I would. Solid start to finish.

Masterpiece, they found their sound. Best mark ever.

AaAaAaAaAaAaAa

Cet album me rappel beaucoup de souvenirs avec Child in time. Cependnat le reste est juste du vraiment bon metal/rock. J'aime beaucoup Deep Purple. 5

I would almost put this on par with Zeppelin. There’s so many heavy metal bands from the late 70s to today that owe Deep Purple for their sound.

A classic !!

Okay this does in fact rock

The first record with the essential Mark II line-up, and what a great introduction!

sonzeira, sempre bom curtir

When I bought that album (it was about 40 years ago) it didn't leave my record player for a long time. For me, it was the foundation stone of heavy metal. 5+

Truly, one of the albums of all times.

An early heavy metal album that has more in common with modern day desert rock than heavy metal but don't take that as a slight. This album has a killer groove running through it and i am all for it. Having only heard the big tracks from Deep Purple i was pleasantly surprised how much i really loved this album. Definitely earned its spot on my classic rock playlist.

roxo profundo nas pedras

Amazing and still holds up even with the quirky hammond organ

Awesome!

The feel of Deep Purple throughout, but almost completely new to me!

Muy chulo, rock del bueno. Una pasada

Deep Purple in Rock is a great album with some fantastic songs from beginning to end. "Speed King" is a well-known classic rock song that opens the album really well, followed by the more dramatic and slightly more obscure "Bloodsucker". The third track of the album is one of Deep Purple's standout songs, "Child in Time", a particularly unique song which really uses the various skills of the members at the time. "Flight of the Rat" has some really good punk rock vibes to it, which come in unexpectedly after the more melodic-rock style of "Child in Time", but the song itself is great. "Into the Fire", "Living Wreck" and "Hard Lovin' Man" are solid songs that don't particularly stand out but are still fun to listen to, and the album closes off strongly with another well-known song in "Black Night", featuring what may arguably be Deep Purple's second-most recognizable guitar riff. While not my favourite album by the band, In Rock is still a great example of Deep Purple's most well-known lineup and is a great listen to any fans of the genre.

Me encanta, música de comfort!

This album has the power to change boys into men

Oh my god I loved this. I knew by reputation that Deep Purple’s one of the bands that built the bridge from hard rock to heavy metal, and something about that boundary creates stuff I like way more than straight metal. Lot of Prog in the alchemy here

The first of three knockout punches. Before Blackmore became a fairy. Showing Ian Paice to be one of the three best English drummers

Bad ass! Deep Purple rocks!

Bem mais heavy metal do que pensei que seria. Legal!

Un peu honte de pas avoir écouté ce monument du rock avant aujourd'hui.

Deep Purple? Sure, great song, but aren't they a one hit wonder? And it's not even on this album. But OK, I'm game. What else you got, Deep Purple? I do appreciate the hubris of the album art. And the names of the song, taken together, are brutals. The album roars out of the gate with Speed King, I love it. All time classic heavy metal screaming, notable work on the drums, and I'm taken completely by surprise by the organ. Bloodsucker I'm feeling the base. Wait, the track is great too. *All* of the songs are strong, but my faves are Speed King, Flight of the Rat, Black Night. I hear a certain amount of Alice Cooper, a tiny bit of Doors, some Zeppelin, even Steppenwolf. Child in Time makes me think of both David Bowie and Pink Floyd. Obviously Deep Purple had more influence than I realized, and was right in the middle of everything, giving and getting and helping invent heavy metal. I find my own ignorance genuinely stunning sometimes. TL;DR Great album.

Holy shit this was great especially the first 3 songs goddamn that guitar

Сильно

A classic rock album. Love it - child in time gives me goose pimples every time I hear it!

Zalige riffs, machtige orgel-solo's, een steengoeie (pun intended) zanger. topalbum

This was among the sound track of my freshman year in high school. It was great to hear it again, though it's not going to climb back into my regular playlist.

Smoke on the water and other awesome songs! Was super fun!

Discazo de puro rock clásico con una voz espectacular, solos de guitarra endiablados y con canciones con ritmo muy pegadizas y sinónimas de excelente rock

Now this was electric! Noise all over the place with each track came a different engine like sound. Despite having seven songs, the album goes on for a while. Three words to describe this album; loud, fast and chaotic... and fucking brilliant!

Puros temones

Ian Gillan é fantástico

This was my first time listening to this album, and I loved it. One thing I really enjoy about Deep Purple is that as they evolved into a heavier band, they continued to use the organ prominently. The organ holds just as much dominance as the guitars, which is a very defining characteristic of Deep Purple’s sound. It adds a unique depth and richness to their music that sets them apart from other heavy bands.

Hey this was good! I love an explosive opener on a rock album and Speed King ticked all the boxes. I never cared much for Deep Purple before but I developed a newfound respect for them over the course of this album. Child In Time is a prog rock classic.

The funniest thing about Deep Purple is the fact that their most famous song is one of their worst. Another :fire: album

These guys are so severely underrated in rock history.

Child in Time is GOATed, rest of this one is pretty good too. I prefer Machine Head insofar as representing the "must-hear"ness of this band, but you def. gotta hear this more than most of the shite on this list.

Solid hard rock, but I know they have more

Flight of the rat really stands out to me

Smokin'

𝘋𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘙𝘰𝘤𝘬 has to be one of rock music’s great “Mount Rushmore albums.” The cover is unforgettable, and the music is just as monumental. Sitting somewhere between hard rock and the emerging heavy metal sound, the album captures a band pushing both styles to their limits. What stands out most is the constant interplay between Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar and Jon Lord’s Hammond organ. At times they complement each other, and at others it almost feels like a friendly competition to see who can steal the spotlight. That musical tension gives the album much of its energy and excitement. It’s one of those albums that sits right on the border between hard rock and heavy metal, and that’s part of what makes it so fascinating. Wherever you draw that line, 𝘋𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘗𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘙𝘰𝘤𝘬 belongs on both sides of it.

El sonido del rock

Oh damn, this is HEAVY! And HAUNTING! And I'm learning that Deep Purple are not only "Smoke on the Water," they're HAUNTING and HEAVY and great.

Funny. I asked the generator gods to please not give me the 60’s… well 70 ain’t the 60’s anymore- yeah? Oh yes! The 70’s have arrived! Interesting, I have never listened to Deep Purple before. I remember having a conversation with my brother a bit ago where they came up, though. He had a whole theory about The Grateful Dead and jam bands affecting rock generally (for the worse.) He cited Deep Purple as an example where audiences were expected to be high af to properly “appreciate” them and the endless “solos and noodles” they dished out. I couldn’t really comment, had no experience myself. So, no blunts in the house, stone cold sober, and I can say definitively, this is pretty awesome. I HAD said to my brother that there was more to the “jam” than the Grateful Dead. There is a whole tradition of jazz improvisation that GD was leaning on. There is, for me, something quite electrifying about a group of musicians, well trained, who can improv off each other. Who can give each other space to solo and bring it back to the structure of the song. And if you have HARD, SWINGING drumming making that happen? Hell f*ing yeah. Ian Paice. Rock god. 🤘(discovered today really) 4 Boolean: TRUE

so fireee already had child in time

Ace. 4.5

Bro some sick instrument solos were in this album. At least one guitar solo and at least one drum solo. This was a great and compact rock album.

A rock album full of hits.

I like to rock. And this album did that, so… 3.5/5

me gusto la versión del 25 aniversario

Nice. Fun feel to it. Very classic rock. Enjoyed it.

Very enjoyable.

Really cool album that I never listened to. I'd heard 'Child in Time', but nothing else on this album. Some great instrumentals and great voice. When listening to Child in Time, I realized it sounds a bit like Bowie.

Cada vez que vez una canción de más de 7 minutos de largo de rock clásico me voy a emocionar a sobre manera gracias a estos manes. Me han enamorado de los solos instrumentales largos.

Some albums just some epic and this sounds EPIC

very my dad.

Classic 70s at its best. Deep Purple were always underrated in my opinion.

I was unaware that Deep Purple went this hard. Porto-metal

a fascinating album the way it is like a mainstream rock band doing their songs in a prog way. It sounds incredible and i feel it's due to this approach to making songs like Child in Time. I think even in other songs, you can see this style and that little more complexity, gives a lot of interest and appeal to this album

Fast guitar riffs and razor-sharp solos? Check! A multi-octave vocalist? Check! Drum solos? Check too! There are even epic organ parts. "Classic hairy rock clichés," some might say, but the fact is that this album was one of the reasons for those clichés. Before this, Deep Purple had been making all sorts of art-psychedelia and even veered toward orchestral sounds, but then Ritchie Blackmore heard Led Zeppelin and said, "That's how we should play!" In the end, Deep Purple picked up a few interesting tricks from their colleagues, hired a new vocalist and bassist, and delivered classic 70s rock — seven epic songs that are perfectly enjoyable to headbang to. True, the album isn't mixed very well, and none of the numerous reissues have improved its sound much, but that's not so important, since for me personally, this music already works on a reflex level.

8 - GOOD

Hyvää kamaa. Tuli parikin kertaa vedettyä läpi kun oli just sopiva rokkimeininki päällänsä.

incredible sounding album. insane shredding fav tracks: 1, 2, 5, 7

Love me some Speed King. Rest of it is pretty good too. Definitely understand why the Stoners love Deep Purple. 4/5

Not super my thing, quite heavy but amazing guitar and general playing! Would listen on another day

Baustelle, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Feine Scheibe.

man thats pure rock. those guitar solos perfectly complement the harmony. everything just works. had a lot of fun listening to it. speed king is a great song and the rest just complete each other

Definitely the best Deep Purple album I have ever listened to. The energy is relentless. The drumming is fantastic and the guitar and organs are explosive. How did they manage to make an organ sound like a tiger on Living Wreck? You can definitely hear how this would have influenced groups like Iron Maiden or Van Halen. Favorites were Speed King, Child In Time, Flight Of The Rat, and Living Wreck.

Really enjoyed, can see the beginnings of hard rock in this album

Enjoyed more than I was expecting on a full listen through, and you can hear it’s influence on subsequent music.

- I'm lowk fucking with this - I gotta listen to more deep purple

8/10 Having previously enjoyed but not loved Machine Head, I was pretty interested to see where Deep Purple were a couple of years prior, particularly as fans typically fall down one side or the other of these two albums being their best. Straight out of the gate, this record is loud, feisty and driven. They fire out riffs like they're going out of fashion, but also blend that insistent, riff-driven momentum with elements of blues, psychedelia and the odd touch of rock 'n roll. They also aren't afraid to take detours down instrumental avenues, with lengthy sections dedicated to playing the absolute balls off their instruments. It's not always tidy, but it's always delivered with verve, swagger and a sense of infectious fun. The vocals are used more sparingly than most rock bands, but are typically effective, switching between hooky choruses and speaker shredding wails. There's more than a touch of prototype Iron Maiden sound in places, with that most apparent in the vocal of Child In Time, but you can also hear a great deal of influence for sludge and stoner bands like The Melvins, Queens of the Stone Age and even noise rock bands like My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth. It's pretty remarkable that this album came out in 1970, when compared to those bands that would follow. But it would be easy to dismiss this as a proto noise-metal album when there are great touches of Henrix-esque psych rock and Led Zep Style riff work. For me, the overblown noise sound takes things a little too far away from sonic clarity and the "live" sound they were going for hasn't held up quite as well as the musical foundation, but you can definitely hear what they were going for. There were times when this did drift and become a tiny bit self-indulgent, but for the most part, it feels a more consistent whole than Machine Head, and while there aren't as many hits, the sonic and instrumental adventures they undertake make for a slightly more satisfying and complete experience. Speed King - There are some absolutely stonking riffs and solos on this and the influence of Deep Purple on stoner and sludge rock that would follow is immediately apparent. But boy does it sound like it was recorded during the soundcheck at a large, empty venue. The song itself is really good though and you can get a definite feel of how loud and boisterous they must have been live. The transition into the solos is quite odd and jarring, but once they get going again, it's great fun. A solid yet grimy start. Bloodsucker - There's definitely some Hendrix vibe coming off some of their riffs and this has a really great groove. The mix is still grimy, but sounds way more intentional and coherent than on Speed King. The beat drives well and there's some great swagger to both the riffs and the vocal delivery. Things get a bit more psychedelic during the solos too, which gives extra range and flavour. Child In Time - A nice change of pace now and it leans a bit more into the psychedelic side. It's a bit cleaner and more melodically focused, but still has a rumbling weight to it as it builds. Again, they lean towards a Hendrix feeling with the guitar solo, and the build from there is really good. It's obviously a touch self indulgent, but most guitar solos are, if we're completely honest. The harmonisation section between organ and guitar that they hit us brilliant. I can imagine this being absolutely epic live, and while there's more than a hint of Spinal Tap to it, it's the right side of the line for me. There are definitely hints to big metal bands that would follow too, as the vocal section near the end sounds an awful lot like where Iron Maiden would take metal in the 80s. Flight Of The Rat - This is a bit more poppy and even punky in some respects. They're a super tight and coherent group and while things sound grubby and dirty, they do translate that live feel and momentum onto the record really well. The soloing here is great fun and well executed, even if it's something that works better live than it does as a studio piece. Still really enjoyable though, and they do a really good job of keeping things fresh throughout the 8 minute track length. The choppy wah guitar section is bloody excellent, and even the drum solos are pretty engaging. Into The Fire - Great groove here with more solid riffs and a huge amount of weight to the sound. It leans a bit more into a standard song structure, which mixes things up nicely from the last couple of tracks. It's dirty, sleazy and fun but doesn't just take the obvious or easy options with the composition, so still has a fresh sound. Living Wreck - More great riffs and more swagger. There's some cool sound design work in here which adds to the slightly psychedelic edge. The drumming is great too and has a solid sense of touch to it. It's bluesy, funky and dirty and the vocals fit with that vibe perfectly too. This is a slightly tighter and more focused song, but they still make space to rock out. Hard Lovin' Man - The drive at the start of this is excellent and the sound design is massive and weighty. When the vocals kick in, it's insistent and punchy, but they make space for some cool little breakdown moments to keep things fresh. Again, this sounds like it would be amazing live and it only falls a little short of that as a studio work. This does become a little long and self-indulgent when we go through the solo sections, which holds it back a little, but it's still a solid closer and it sounds like they're having a lot of fun, which is pretty infectious.

1. "Speed King" 2. "Child in Time" 3. "Living Wreck" and, of course, in this issue, "Black Night"

Охуенно.

I feel like the music itself is good but I usually go for more like radio friendly/listenable music; not something I’d add to my playlist but solid Damn the singer has a good voice Good rock sound

You could argue that this was instrumental to metal

DEEP PURPLE I WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOUR GAME. This was the best album to clean the house to. Fav song: Child in Time, Living Wreck

Fun album, love early hard rock metal. Makes me wanna get stoned and play DnD.

A really good album. In general, I'm very much in the "less is more" camp when it comes to the number of tracks and length of the album. This was right in the goldilocks zone. It didn't sound dated. All of the tracks were good, the standout tracks being 'Child in Time' and 'Flight of The Rat'.

7 - Rocked pretty hard

I really liked this album - although I'm old enough to have liked it when it came out originally! Typical Deep Purple.

Rating: 9/10 Honestly rocks hard. It's actually really good hard rock and ahead of its time proto-metal. The front half I believe is better but the last few B-side tracks are still good, especially the crazy heavy ending of Hard Lovin' Man. The start of Speed King is definitely an insane way to start a rock album in 1970, and Child in Time absolutely deserves its classic status. Bloodsucker and Flight of the Rat are great. Now the lyrics...not always the best, but I'm paying attention to the better parts of the albums like the soaring guitars and shredding solos and ferocious drums. I listened to this one on a high compression youtube mix which sucked so I would actually like to hear it again in higher quality to judge the production.

5/15 Classic. Can totally hear how Child in Time was an inspiration for Arjen Luccassen's Ayreon and Star One projects

Yeah that was fun!

heerlijk !!

спид кинг норм

this is one of THE albums i recommend to people wanting to get into harder rock. totally killer!

Much better than I would have thought really liked it

Hay una estrella clara del show, Child in Time, que es un monumento, el resto está guay, pero es que la diferencia es abismal....

Sometimes you want to step into a Slim Jim and see where the world takes you.

Great album throughout Standout songs: Speed king Child in time Into the fire

Best Song: Child in Time This isn't bad. I am not hearing anything special with it outside of the juxtaposition from this to the average album from the late 60s shows that the times were changing. I like Deep Purple and, while this album is relatively without any of their hits, is solid. 4/5.

Banger album but "Into the Fire" is basically just King Crimson

I liked it the whole way. Dad rock lives forever.

Love the little Bach nod at the start of Speed King. This is my second Deep Purple album of the list, and while this one didn't have any hits that I knew going in, the album as a whole was great. I'm really liking their sound, particularly how they work in the organ in clean and distorted flavors. Tie between Speed King or Child in Time for my favorite.

Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Near Perfect - I said in my Machine Head entry that this was my favourite Purple album. I stand by that. Speed King has one of my favourite riffs ever during the chorus. The riffs just keep coming. Every song has such a driving, propulsive momentum that defines so much of what I love about heavy rock music. Phenomenal.

Look, "The more traditionally bluesy the metal the greater my allergic reaction" is almost axiomatic with me. There are obvious exceptions, Black Sabbath (for instance), but by and large this is a good rule of thumb for my taste. And we know there's a particular texture to certain musical expressions of "now classic" British humor in music from the era — a blend of absurdity, musical irony, and self-aware, ghoulish theatricality — that creates a high-wire type situation where 80% of the time I don't feel it succeeds musically. Layer all that with my general suspicion of the high-tenor rock belting that hails me as a listener by singing too directly and you begin to understand how in my head I'm compiling a list of grievances against this record. Imagine my surprise to conclude Deep Purple in Rock was overall not bad for me. The energy they invest and express combined with a commitment to the bit was enough to win me over. Impressive for 1970, a solid four-star rating for Deep Purple's In Rock encouraging multiple listens.

Rating:★★★★ Good classic rock. Lots of long solos, which are a favorite of mine. Kinda reminds me of Led Zeppelin, which is one of my favorite bands, so safe to say I enjoy the sound of this album.

Banger

A little nutty and full of machismo. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Just gritty

Just an all-around solid, heavy classic rock record. Don't have too much else to say. 3.5 -> 4/5

This was good. Nothing in particular stood out to me, but very solid record by a classic band.

Shoutout to that one guy in high school who I told to go listen to this album and he proceeded to get into Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Dio, and like all the other iterations of Deep Purple. Like idk. Their extended catalog isn’t that prolific, and this is really their peak. Deep Purple II is the classic lineup for a reason. God I forgot how awesome this album is. Rock music firing on all cylinders fr. So funny a bunch of Brits did a Mount Rushmore album art spoof. But I digress. Child in Time is an all-timer. Great riffs. Immaculate vocals. Idk. Just great rock music

Mega coole riffs am start!

I enjoyed this hard rock/metal album from Deep Purple! I still remember playing “Smoke on the Water” on Guitar Hero as a kid, those were good times and introduced me to some legendary songs and bands at a young age. I’d never listened to a full album by Deep Purple but I had a great time and I would listen to this again in the future.

Yeah, I can see where Spinal Tap gets it from now. This is the daddest of dad rock, but damn, do I love the Organ as an instrument. I can see two sides of this album: The first is the overly-grandiose self indulgence and cliche driven excess of a lot of 70s rock I do not like; the other half is incredible use of instruments and a psychedelic atmosphere. It's like a Bridge between Iron Butterfly and Led Zeppelin. I... really quite enjoyed that! Some songs go on for too long without doing enough (Child in Time) and the lyrics are almost an unintentional parody of the genre, but I can't deny its charm.

"You said you were a virgin, full of promise and mystery". Classic 70s rock lyrics. It was different back then. The progenitors of stadium hard-rock no doubt, this album influenced Bruce Dickinson and you can see why. Although this has so much more soul than Iron Maiden - it's given more warmth by its musical layers (psychedelic sounding organ as well as guitars), but also riffs more centred in amped up blues-rock which gives it a certain power, like the big 'Speed King' riff. And Deep Purple's strength is coming up with excellent riffs and hooks. Add to this of course, one of the great vocalists of the genre in Gillan, who can gravitate from hard rock vocal to a falsettoed prog rock and you've got a certain melodrama that remains over the top but enjoyable. 'Child in Time' is the outstanding masterpiece. All the Purple albums reviewed fall in the same bracket. Some superb stuff, quite a bit of needless protraction, but a supremely talented band with a skill for writing strong hooks. And in fairness this does come in at a little over 40 minutes. Welcome me to Dadsville and consider it a four.

Very good album, it's raw, it's powerful and it gives you the energy to drive and do everything. Guitar work is wonderful, vocals are insane. Just an overall great hard rock album.

I know I got a live album from them last year that should have told me otherwise already, but I still think of Deep Purple just as the corny band behind "Smoke on the Water". This, on the other hand, is absolutely insane! Typically I end up feeling like early heavy metal feels pretty tame to modern ears, but no, I can still totally hear just how this must have felt to hear in 1970. The songs themselves are just alright, but that *sound*!

This is an iconic lineup for Deep Purple. Iconic record as well, everyone in their prime. Ritchie Blackmore playong that guitar so classy, and Ian Gillian easily being one of the best singers of those times. This record is incredibly good, and a big influence for the metal bands that were to come.

Over the top rock awesomeness! No letting up on this one

43 minutes of solid rock. Vocally the melodic singing is good however the intense screams are not for me personally. However that was more than made up for on this rock album with the fast searing guitar solos and hard hitting riffs. This rock album as certainly stood the test of time and needed playing at full volume (not sure if it was my safest day using a saw bench listening to this album!) Best track on the album was child in time- the slow build up, the amazing solos and the fast paced finish brought such joy! Overall a very solid 8/10

I can’t put my finger on why deep purple the st was so much better and mind blowing than this was for me and I think it’s just because I really would rather be listening to this new Prince daddy album that just came out and I had to get through this to get back to it. It’s great metal guitar music, heavy and fun. I’ll probably have to come back to it to give it a more fair shake but 4 seems fair.

I listened to this years ago. Child in Time stands as a song i really love, even if I never listen to it (mainly cause i forget it exists). I didn't expect to like it as much, tho. A very well put together album. Aggressive, but experimental. Blunt, but emotional. A bit more variety would help, but still i liked it a lot.

Speed king - 2/5 Bloodsucker - 2/5 Child in time - 5/5 Flight of the rat - 4/5 Into the fire - 3/5 Living wreck - 4/5 Hard lovin man - 4/5

O bom e velho roque

Bluesy, with some excellent solos. I had a lot of fun.

Someone heard Black Sabbath and was like "what if this had more moog?" Not entirely a bad instinct. I didn't like this nearly as much as Sabbath's early albums, but it scratches a bit of that same itch. Low 4.

Not my thing but not bad at all!

Surprisingly good!

First if all, if we're going to do a Mount Rushmore parallel, make sure to only have four band members. The album cover already irritated me this morning. Then, I remembered this was Deep Purple, a band with killer riffs, long, soothing rock ballads, and just an overall fun 1970s Classic Rock vibe. It's all good now. Favorite Track: "Child In Time".

Good album. I really enjoyed most of the songs. However, I don't like the screaming of Ian Gillan...so this is one of the main reasons why this is not getting 5 stars.

Great riffs, rocks hard. More organ than I was expecting. The long songs don't always keep me hooked in the whole time.

Enjoyable, a bit repetitive, but I love the energy and the classic rock sound

I'm becoming a bit obsessed w early metal

One of those albums where you can tell how talented the band are and that's allowing them to push the envelope a bit. First song in particular was brilliant, really hits you straight away. There were interesting bits most of the way through too. I would say it's firmly rooted in classic rock in a way that even though this is a great example, it needs to be led zep levels to properly stand out. Still a 4 though.

Appreciated the long breakdowns, Child in Time and Flight of the Rat are the top tracks.

Really fun album! At first, I thought they would've made the ridiculous length of the songs work, but yea I was wrong. The guitar solos are INSANE and the energy is immaculate. Decent variety despite the fact that these kind of albums and bands usually have really similar songs. It wasn't anything insanely special, but I had a blast listening to it so I think it deserves 4 stars. Lowkey makes me want to explore 70's rock more.

Bloodsucker stood out. Child in Time was a wild ride. This is a great album 4/5

Just awesome. This album goes hard, they rock hard. I'm not familiar with hair rock, so perhaps i'm more inclined into this album since its new to me. but really loved this album through to through 8/10 Fav Track: Child in Time

8/10 Buen album, movedizo, con buenos ritmos. Me gustan los solos de guitarra o batería qué tiene en algunas canciones, acompaña muy bien el desarrollo de la canción

When I listened to the first few seconds of the first song the first thing that came in to my mind was that I wasn’t going to like it and decided to listen to it later. I’m glad I did because I really enjoyed it! It was a great rock album with great musicians all around, but the guitar on this album was incredible. I could see myself going for a few songs when I’m in a rock mood.

Number: 87 Date: 03/30/2026 Artist: Deep Purple Album: Deep Purple In Rock Year: 1970 Genre: 70s Hard Psychedelic Blues Rock Rating: 4 Notes: Before: ======= So, I was a pretty big Deep Purple fan back in the day, but not until "Smoke on the Water" came out, which I don't really care for anymore. I only have a couple of songs from them in my favorites by years playlists and nothing from the "In Rock" album. During: ======= Woah, love the opening. These guys aren't messing around, at least for the first 70 seconds. Then they do start messing around, which is, unfortunate. I don't know what the point of the little keyboard solo was. Anyways, they get right back to it. 4 Speed King 4 Bloodsucker 5 Child In Time 4 Flight Of The Rat 4 Into The Fire 4 Living Wreck 5 Hard Lovin' Man ----------------------------------------------------- 4.42 WEIGHTED AVERAGE (accounts for song lengths) After : ======= I'm pretty sure we had this album in the house back in the day but I don't recall listening to it much back then. It must have been one of brother's albums. Anyways, I did enjoy this one overall. Seeing how there are 3 total Deep Purple albums in this challenge, I'm probably only going to be able to give one of them a high rating, and I chose this one since it is the earliest released of the three. 4 my personal rating 5 suitability for this list 4 impact ----------------------------------------------- 4.3 composite rating

When I look at the user album list I sometimes wonder what these people are thinking. Some modestly successful band who they believe is somehow essential. Them I look at the actual list and realise it's just as bad. One Deep Purple album? Sure, don't love them but one makes sense. Two? Seems a real stretch but maybe. Three? There's just no way they deserve so many. This would be my one to keep probably. From the ones I've heard it's actuality pretty good. Still over indulgent. Still pretty dated. But a few decent songs and a couple better than that

nice album but i didn't like...how should i say it....some of the "sounds" in some songs?

Child in Time almost borders on Pink Floyd-esque. Oh this song was in Twister!

Good album

Great classic rock album from start to finish. The guitar and vocals are over the top, in the best way possible. Drums are tight. The whole thing is just a solid groover! 4.0/5.0

Nice album. Child in time is a top song, listening to it again I realized it's one of the greatest rock songs I know. The rest of the album is not as perfect, but sounds fine enough.

Album Review 095 Deep Purple In Rock by Deep Purple (1970) Rating 4/5 “…the numbers all go to eleven. Look… right across the board.”

My original review, with 4 stars: "It doesn’t start that strong, but then “Child In Time” kick starts the ruckus. There are other gems that are overlooked. “Flight of the Rat” is a hard track, but “Into the Fire” takes you to another place. “Living Wreck” should be the finale over “Hard Lovin’ Man” but both are great tracks also." Listened again and am sticking with a 4, before Coverdale's time at DP, only he would have probably allowed me to notch it up to a 5.

Overall Rating - 4.43/5 (8.86/10). This album is uncompromising, hard, and absolutely banging from start to finish. Crunchy bass riffs, the overdriven Hammond is perfection, and it is exactly what I expect to hear when I see Deep Purple.

the third deep purple recommendation in this list. and it's more of the same classic metal music you've (hopefully) been actively listening to as this list has went on. it's another album that'll make your hair and beard grow inexplicably longer. for whatever reason, the last two i've given five stars, i think i'm giving this one a four. it's not that it's "worse", i think it just didn't hit as hard as the others. i think it's a matter of taste. you might like it better than me, especially if you love your old school metal music. it's like a b side after two a sides. i think they're a little too crazy with the organ.

Sonic Note — Deep Purple in Rock (1970) As I move backward in time, I can feel the ground shifting beneath everything I’ve heard so far. Before refinement, before atmosphere, before precision — there was eruption. With Deep Purple, I hear rock at a moment of transformation in 1970: caught between the fading psychedelia of the late 60s and the emerging weight of what would become heavy metal and progressive structure. This isn’t polished. It’s ignition. The interplay between Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar and Jon Lord’s organ feels almost combative — classical ambition colliding with raw amplification. Tracks like Child in Time stretch beyond song into statement — tension, release, and sheer force. And in Speed King, I hear something proto-modern: the speed, the aggression — seeds of everything that follows. ⸻ My Journey Note Where Ágætis byrjun gave me stillness, this gives me: the moment sound breaks open. Historically, I recognize this as a foundation record — a bridge between eras, where rock music begins to discover its own power and scale. And as I listen, I can hear it clearly: this is not the result… this is the beginning of the storm.

Very cool!

3.5. Some good jamming on here.

Decent

Great rock and the roll

Initially going into this I wasn't the most enthused. Not because I don't like Deep Purple, but my read on them is this true rock and roll band that can get a little repetitive (I'm not even talking about Smoke on the Water which is overplayed obviously), BUT man this was constructed really well. It's exciting and cool and rocking and that really makes it interesting as a slice of that time. They deserve appraise when compared to their familiars at the time, because they rocked.

Starting the album with "Speed King" is a brave move, but by god, does it set the tone of the album perfectly. The aggressive fuzzy guitar riffs doing a great job of supporting that track title. Between the previous track and "Bloodsucker" proves that Deep Purple went heavier than I ever knew, which is awesome. The keyboard and guitar in this track are having something of a conversation too, which I've never heard before; extra awesome. Although "Child in Time" was a bit long for my liking it was undeniably a musical odyssey that felt like it tripped many genres of rock and blues. For that it deserves credit. Similar criticisms can be made of "Flight of the Rat", but still was enjoyable nonetheless. "Into the Fire" was a fun track, with (what I believe) it's Beatles inspiration being worn on it's sleeve. "Living Wreck" made a lasting impression with it's scratchy riffs and epic vocals. With it's galloping guitar riff and Gillan's epic screams, "Hard Lovin' Man" was a epic way to end this album. Apart from my gripes with the length of it's two centre tracks, this was a super fun ride.

As someone who really isn't into metal, this is probably my favorite album on that vein. It is packed with bangers. 9/10 [KEEP]

Lots and lots of instrumental rock , which was great

Gotta note that this album cover is hilarious. They really committed to the bit there. This is my third Deep Purple suggestion from the list (after Machine Head and a live album), and so far I've liked all three more that I might've thought I would. The songs are good on this one, hard rock with strong instrumentation. The vocals are a little tougher, but work with the music. Some of the tracks are really enjoyable, even if they run pretty long. A few others are just OK, with nothing I would call bad. Side by side, I preferred Machine Head to In Rock. But I still thought this was a pretty good album, and I'd listen to it again. Overall: 3.6/5

I was ready to shit on this but it's actually kinda cool.

When I was a kid, Deep Purple were gods to me. Forget Zeppelin, these were the hard rockers I found a home in. I went years without hearing this album though, and even still the last time I heard it before today was in 2020. It's been a while man. And I'm glad to report it still holds up.

Synd att man lärt sig att Deep Purple är "Smoke on the water". Så mycket bangers i detta album

Never really look forward to Deep Purple but it’s always great

Holy moly this rocks hard. Sure is the prog falsetto cringey 40 years later..yes. But damn do those drums drive and guitar shreds. It’s all gas, no breaks.

Liked it overall, a little less screaming maybe, but musically great.

Decent riffing, sounds pretty heavy and energetic for 1970. Not sure I'll return to it much, but it's good stuff.

terribles guitarras y baterias dios

Primera vez que escucho a Deep Purple de forma consciente. Gran experiencia, sobre todo ese griterío hermoso de 'Bloodsucker'.

It's a shame that they're known for Smoke on the Water. These guys are so good. Child in Time is one of the greatest vocal performances ever.

really good but couldn’t give it the attention it needed. will come back

Heavy riffs and great performances, definitely deserves a place on the Mount Rushmore of metal

Awesome album. For some reason I couldn't get the ATHF characters Master Shake and Carl out of my head while listening, this just seems like an album they would both love. But yeah this album fucks.

Full disclaimer. I love metal, at least a lot of modern prog and speed work. Naturally, I'm going to be biased in favor of metal albums on this list as I find that there are some inexcusable omissions in favor of every britpop album ever. However, to my shame, I've never listened to a Deep Purple album. I was vaguely aware that they were one of the progenitors of the genre, alongside a few others like Black Sabbath of course. But when I got this album, I was very excited. Having listened, I was not disappointed whatsoever. Incredible early metal work that's going on 60 years old at this point. Not without flaws, as unsurprisingly many artists improve upon the sound and so forth. Not particularly impressed by Gillan's vocals, for instance. Regardless, an exciting listen. I'm sure I'll get the most bland 2/3 star 2000's pop album tomorrow to balance this out. Highlight: Hard Lovin' Man. Great riffs.

That's some straight up solid rock and roll.

I mainly know Deep Purple by way of listening to Ian Gillan on the original cast recording of Jesus Christ Superstar every Easter. (If you're a fan of that show, it's worth looking up Lindsay Ellis' supercut video of the Gethsemane "why." Gillan jumped the octave on that bit and everyone who's sung the song after him has been chasing the high of his insane falsetto.) The question I'm asking myself now, is Whhyyyyyyyyyyy haven't I listened to more Deep Purple before this?! I don't know, sometimes people are stupid. This is epic. I already knew Gillan was from another planet, but the entire band shows their quality in this album. While I don't listen to or particularly enjoy today's heavy metal, it was super interesting to listen to an early example of the genre and get a sense of its roots.

Turns out every member of Deep Purple is extremely good at what they’re doing. I should… probably listen to more of them lol. Criminally undersold by smoke on the water lmao. I knew this but I still never dove into them

3.5 stars. Early 70's hard rock. Reminiscent of Motorhead with how fast-paced it is. Lots of organ is a fun added element. No real standout tracks but the whole thing is a rush from start to finish.

The only Deep Purple song I was previously aware of was Smoke on the Water, so I was not really prepared for this since that's more bluesy rock. But I like progressive and hard rock, so I found it to be enjoyable.

classic

pretty good i have no strong feelings about it but the instruments sounded good didn’t really leave an impression though

Top 3: 1. Child in Time 2. Living Wreck 3. Hard Lovin' Man Least Favourite: Bloodsucker

Really really good First 4/5

geeeeeet love favorite song: bloodsucker

Decent iguess

Probably a 3 but child of time pushes it up a notch

First impressions, ugly badly executed album art is trying to make me understand that they "are" rock. Cheesy. The visual is the first negative step towards my slow-burning appreciation for this album. On the first listen I was wondering why this effort and not Machine Head, the vibe felt similar and I breezed through this listen with the attention of background rock, no obvious 'singles'. On the second listen I started hearing the heavy metal roots, the speedy guitar, the energy of the heightened vocals, a solid step away from blues rock and into heavy metal. By the third listen I was looking up and understanding the history. This is 1970, the middle of the formative years for what heavy metal is going to be, and this album forms an integral part of that DNA. Not that there isn't some points we could knock down within the lyrics and execution, like the stereo track guitar solo at the end, it's not exactly a plus. In the general field of it, as an album in its entirety, it's not only solid, it's timeless. There are bands today who could only aspire to achieve such energy. I do feel a little less cheese and a little more hook could've taken the effort over the top, but I wouldn't go back in time and risk changing anything here. This effort has caused too much impact to have had it any other way. 4.3/5

Klaasika jedna neprejebiva 4/5

Leuker dan verwacht

This album deserves all the love it gets.

Good solid rock n roll album. Love the organ. It's a fun album. The drum solo in Flight of the Rat made me smile. The album is a good length too, there's so many albums that are just too long and I lose interest unless there's a through story. Good groove, solid musicianship.

Immediately this reminds me of the School of Rock intro scene with that band playing whatever song it is. Something about the screaming vocal harmonies, similar key too. I can’t unhear it now. Tbh I dig that it’s pretty fuckin rad. Generally I like this stuff though. I’ve always known Deep Purple for Smoke on the Water but haven’t listened to much else. Good to listen to while I work. 3.75/5 so round up to 4 I guess.

Best Song: Child in Time. This album could contain just this song and it would still get the same rating. It is a true wonder that this song is able to hit such emotional peaks only 3 minutes in, and then somehow continue to morph and maintain that energy and intensity for the full 10 minute runtime. A technical and emotional whirlwind. Worst Song: Flight of the Rat. I think it would be hard for any song to follow "Child in Time", but a seven minute, rolling-rhythm track like this never stood a chance. Overall: In contrast to a lot of these older bands that show up in this list, every time I listen to Deep Purple I come away thinking, "I should listen to more Deep Purple". Their music is electric, slick as hell, but always seems to retain an element of humanity that some of their classic rock brethren lost in the transition to big, arena-style rock.

Reminded me of some Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin. Great listen overall. man that 10-minute song was something. After “Bloodsucker,” I also liked that track really great layering of instruments and just chemistry overall. Everything blends well, really enjoyable and fun listen.

Good chemistry between the drummer and the synths

i was obsessed with guitars 8/10

Best-flight of the rat Hard loving man-best guitar riff Worst?- 4.5/5 (vocals get a bit repetitive and I think they could use some variation)

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Liked what I heard. For whatever reason this is one of my blind spots of early hard rock / metal music. I've been missing out.

Would never have listened to this as not something I would look for. Good album if you like your rock heavy and grizzly

Holy cow, this was absolutely blistering. I never understood DP in the past, knowing them only by their radio songs. This album is amazing.

My personal feelings are a three, but given its importance and the fact that I'd probably have liked it more had I been around at release, I can go four. I've tried to get into Deep Purple, but their overall jazziness, their less impactful melodic quality, and Gillan's vocals keep me at a distance.

Yes! Endelig noget for mig.

One of their best!!!

After a rough couple of days this was a vast improvement. This is my second Deep Purple album after Machine Head way back at album 34. While I enjoyed the previous one, I haven’t ever went back to it but I can definitely see myself listening to this one again. In particular Child In Time is an absolute banger of a track.

I've had a healthy fix of Sabbath and Zeppelin over the years, so I've never felt the need to check out Deep Purple and it looks like I've missed out on a classic! Mixing prog and blues with a dash of Hendrix, In Rock is an early heavy metal classic. I love the way epic organ playing compliments Blackmore's guitar work. Some parts may go on too long and there are some questionable lyrics on here there, robbing this from a perfect score.

Kinda fun. Oh this has that song they played in [[Twister]].

Such solid heavy rock.

Absolute flying start with Speed King but isn’t quite as all killer no filler as Machine Head. Still an enjoyable listen.

Deep Purple are a quintessential rock band, and this album feels like a portal to the 70s. It's got sweet guitar riffs and other instrumentation that enhances the whole sound. I'm not sure I'd say it's 5 stars though. I dunno, some parts of the album, while skillfully made, just didn't really hit as much with me as others. It is still very much worth your time.

awesome I actually didnt finish it fully cuz i was busy but ill come back to it someday

just a classic from the 70s, dad rock for lifeee

Good ol' fashioned hootin' and hollerin'. Would listen again. I love that late 60s heavy rock sound! Top: Child in Time Not Top: Into the Fire

Goes pretty hard tbh.

Good and fun but not something I'd listen to all the time

Child in time is amazing. Speed king is an awesome start to the album. Some indulgence in the keyboard and vocals, but with the skill to back it up. Not as many iconic tracks as I would have expected, but it's a solid rock album

Decent! I like it but not as used to rock.

Rock music history

Favorite track: Child in Time

"Into the Fire" is Jimi Hendrix adjacent, I enjoy it! A few songs could be added to the rock rotation

hard rock é o gênero musical favorito, então eu não posso dizer muito além de que eu realmente aproveitei escutar esse álbum. o deep purple é um clássico e a sonoridade deles é incrível.

Ah, fantastic proto metal. The good stuff. Some of the tracks drag on for a bit, but overall I had a lovely time with this album.

Although child in time is the timeless classic derived from this classic, I really enjoyed relistening the other material on this record. The combination of blues driven guitar ( while not conforming to that genre's structure), lush organ sound and frenetic drumming make for something really fun to listen to. Is it a bit camp because of the vocals and lyrics? Yes. Do I enjoy that in this genre? Also yes.

An awesome hard rock record “Child In Time” and “Flight Of The Rat” are particularly good everything else is pretty good

- First we have a couple of straightforward rockers. Then we get a strange foray into prog, which doesn't particularly excite me but kudos for trying something. - We get back into the rockers again and the fantastic Flight Of The Rat dabbles much more effectively into prog/rock crossover territory. - Great fun LP which ticks both conventional rock and more experimental prog boxes.

Good Rock. Solid. The keyboard is sometimes freaking out a bit too hard :D

Absoluter Klassiker. Child in Time ist einfach der Wahnsinn. Flight of the Rat treibt gut an nach dem schweren Song vorher. (Catchy riff) Living Wreck ist auch ziemlich catchy. Allerdings wirken mir manchmal die Orgel oder gitarrensolos etwas ummelodisch. Vermutlichstilmittel aber stört mich etwas. Ansonsten starkes Album.

The first Deep Purple studio album consisting of entirely original material, coming out as a response to the heavy sound of Led Zeppelin's debut, this album is a lot of fun and still feels fresh today. I have a soft spot for this album, particularly because of Child in Time. I listened to this song obsessively at a time when I used to play A LOT of Space Station 13 so I associate this song with getting robusted in maint, shoving clowns down disposal chutes, creating atmos bombs and nuking security (shout out to my boy atmos tech Tak Fuji. Love, Dr. Ray Krieger), setting furries on fire, using a spray bottle to spray acid in people's faces, among many other departures from normal behaviour. That game rocked and taught me a lot about changing my IP and using a virtual machine to evade mac bans for being a massive piece of shit. It also ingrained in me a deep-seated hatred for authority which has not been particularly healthy for me. I would call it a phase but really a good 3 year chunk of my life in high school was coming home and abusing other teenagers online. Sometimes I wonder if my life would have turned out differently if my parents had taken me to a child/adolescent psychologist rather than giving me unrestricted internet access but that's all in the past now. Anyway this album fucking bangs. Highlights: Bloodsucker, Child in Time, Living Wreck

The songs start quite decently, nothing special. Because the special stuff always comes in the second half of the tracks.

This was awesome and totally ripped. My favorite DP album so far

Surely pioneers of the belting rock and roll scream?!

Good rock

Friggin Purple, man. Wall of sound, vocals that few can pull off, what's not to love? Guitar riff driven, but

This brings back memories xx

3 maybe 4

One can only imagine how much better this would have been with cowbell.

Lista wszechczasow trójki. Child in time #4

They rock, HARD!

Good music...Great voice

Solid 70's Rock

Goes hard from the get go. Must have hit like a truck back in the day. A lot of filler on the album though if you ask me, but Child in Time being THAT good tips it into 4 star category. Faves: Speed King, Child in Time, Living Wreck, Black Night

Deep Purple always gets forgotten in the "Big 3 Pioneers of Metal" discussion, with Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. For anyone who thinks Deep Purple isn't significant, or isn't an influence, or isn't anything more than "Smoke on the Water", then listen to this album.

It’s pretty good! Just doesn’t reach the awesome heights they do later with their hits.

Hard driving rock. Some catchy rocking tunes.

pretty enjoyable! Looks of fast chuggy riffs, great drumming

Good ol’ Classic rock

Great riffs and solos. Great drumming. Nice keyboards. Unapologetic vocals. Just a truly fun record.

Ritchie Blackmore is such an awesome guitarist…some great, influential hard rock guitar sounds on there. Music is mostly fine, sort of proto-hard rock. “Child in Time” feels like Spinal Tap, but somehow kinda rules? I would go 3.5 for Blackmore alone, and it kinda grew on me as the album went on…Feeling charitable today so will round up.

Great album, never listened to Deep Purple past Smoke On The Water but I enjoyed this a lot.

Deep Purple have mostly passed me by. I’ve learned plenty of their guitar riffs over the years, but I’d never sat down and listened to a full album until today and Deep Purple In Rock was a brilliant place to start. This album is fantastic. It’s packed with great, hard-edged guitar rock with a hint of early metal. It’s tight, energetic, and gets straight to the point. There is a lot of shouting, though and not always in a good Daltrey kind of way but it never drags the experience down. Favourite track: Speed King sets the tone perfectly, and Hard Lovin’ Man is a fantastic way to close the album. Least favourite track: Honestly, every track is full of energy and worth a listen. Album artwork: A very cool cover, I love it.

This was pretty good. This album slides very well into the pre heavy metal influence category. Very enjoyable. Only reason this gets a 4 is some of the whiny wailing on Child in Time which for me was annoying.

Fengende! Hørtes hele for en gang skyld, likte det mer enn jeg skulle tro. Kanskje noe svak, men blir 4

I only knew Deep Purple from Smoke on the Water so I wasn't sure what to expect, but this is sweet! Child in Time is fantastic and the rest of the album goes hard too. This is exactly the kind of music I think of when I think of (high quality) classic/hard rock. The organ throughout the album adds a lot and all of the musicians are clearly very skilled. Each instrument really shines on this album. 9/10.

I thought this was a cool album. Deep purple is a classic rock band. This album definitely held true to that

This album was sick, big fan of Deep Purple. Child in Time is a hell of a song. 8.5/10

Favorite song: Child in Time

When I was a child - growing up in a deeply religious household where anything heavier than Seventies soft rock or country was verboten - I imagined that "heavy metal" sounded like the opening of "Speed King": energetic, cacophonous, brash, everything I wasn't and wanted to be. In my head it sounded like freedom. Now, thirty-plus years later and in real life, this album sounds just like that. *You know what, fuck it - everybody gets a solo*. And if you're ever wondering why people care about Ritchie Blackmore, the middle section "Child in Time" is your answer. (Not enough people ask about Ian Paice, but if "Flight of the Rat" is any indication then they should.)

fuck yes

Excellent album, rock icon 4/5

Rockzão old school chei de ueu ueu de guitarra, vocal daora e achei particularmente conceitual Top 3: 1- Child in Time 2- Speed King 3- Bloodsucker

ooh it were good it were very good not 5 though 4

As good as Machine Head if not better. Not really much to say. Great riffs, very engaging energetic songs, and a random fantastic 10-minute prog track. Nothing mind blowing but consistent and enjoyable.

Awesome psychedelic early metal rock

child in time best track

Makes me wanna punch a wall

Fun, energetic, just what you want from 70s metal. Thanks for reminding me about Child in Time, what a great track.

Loved it, such good keyboards, good rhythm and drive

Sounds really good, but I was thinking not that metal. Then I listened to Into the Fire, which seems like it might have influenced hundreds of bands.

Groovy man. I don’t like too many instrumentals but this album had a wide variety of instrumentals which kept it interesting. I thought the singer had good talent too but not many vocals

An absolutely stellar group of musicians - headlined by Ritchie Blackmore's shredding - plow through an uncompromising set of progressive hard rock jams. This is the album where Deep Purple really settles in and RAWKS, and it includes their anthemic "Child In Time" - but everyone song on the record is a thrill ride. I knock off one star for a curiously tinny production that robs the record of some of its power.

Liked it a lot more than I thought i would. Enjoyed the funk and rnb elements to some of the tracks.

Clásico de los Purple, con el debut del bajista Roger Glover y del vocalista Ian Gillan para cerrar su alineación. Heavy rock con influencias clásicas (Flight of the rat por ejemplo). Antes que Machine Head este disco sentó las bases de su carrera y de lo que luego serían tostone como el rock progresivo etc etd... menos mal que Detroit o las New York Dolls estaban a la vuelta de la esquina para salvar el R&R.

I plan on suing this app for the whiplash I got today from severe levels of head banging. Damn, those guitars man!!!!

Classic hard rock

I started my other two Deep Purple reviews by saying that I think Deep Purple is fine, and I'm going to start this review the same way. Deep Purple is a fine classic rock band. Do I really want to listen to full albums from them? Eh, not really. Throw me some greatest hits, and I'll survive. I will say that this is the best album cover out of their three albums on the list though. Damn, that goes hard. Brits cosplaying on Mount Rushmore? Fuck yes. We need more non-Americans editing themselves onto Mount Rushmore in 2025. Better yet, if you throw some indigenous folks on there, I bet you could kill off 10% of Fox News's audience. But I digress. It's time to send Deep Purple off into the sunset with my final review of theirs. Like Machine Head, Deep Purple in Rock was fine. I mentioned in my review for Machine Head that I like the way that these guys utilize the organ and guitar together, and that held true on this album as well. These guys have a really unique sound that blends hard rock and prog rock together, and their influence on the former can't be understated. Like Machine Head, in Rock has a few standout songs, and the rest of the album is just fine. "Speed King" was one of the songs that fell into the 'just fine' category, but I thought it was a good choice for a lead-off track, because it hit hard right away. Deep Purple wastes absolutely no time on this album, having literally one drum hit before the heavy guitars and theatrical vocals kick in. For me, "Child in Time" was easily the best song on the album. It's the only song on the album I knew beforehand, and it's not one I've listened to a lot, but I know that organ intro really well, and it kicks ass. Every element gets a chance to shine on this song, and the solos are outstanding. For a song that's over ten minutes long, it's really engaging, and worth paying attention to the whole thing. "Flight of the Rat" was really good too. The vocals reminded me a lot of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, which I really liked. The main guitar riff was really good, and the subtle bass line added a lot of depth to the sound. I thought "Living Wreck" was good too. There was a drum fill at the beginning that I really loved (a shame it didn't pop up again), and I liked the guitar riffs and organ playing. The closing track, "Hard Lovin' Man" was good too. I like the chugging rhythm of the guitars, and the drumming was good too. Overall, I'd have to give a slight edge to in Rock over Machine Head. I think Deep Purple played to their strengths on this album, leaning on the merging of prog and hard rock to craft a unique sound. I wasn't blown away by this album, but I think it's an important piece of music for showing how much depth hard rock can have.

This album actually kicked a lot of ass. Shit vocals, but amazing guitar licks.

Clássico absoluto, com a formação clássica absoluta da banda. Um disco com a energia do Rock, mas não uma descarga de força simplesmente. Temas bem construídos sob a batuta das teclas de Jon Lord. Ótimo disco!

This is pure 70s rock. Great songs, awesome guitar solos. Glad for this recommendation!

Very talented guys doing really impressive things with their instruments. One extra star for the sweet wildcat noise.

Bra greier, vet ikke hvorfor jeg ikke har sjekka ut Deep Purple før.

Hell yeah, bra start på fredagen. Digger det her.

Rockin’ my smockin’ good time

I definitely prefer this to early deep purple! Good funk mixed in. 3.5/5 - 4/5

Rock on 🤘

Favorite Track: Bloodsucker

Good ol classic rock feat some noodly guitars

One of the great early hard rock albums.

Deep Purple is a band that I've always wanted to get into, but I just haven't been exposed to their stuff enough to add it to a playlist. Parts of the album reminded me of Ozzy Osbourne's music, others were much more mellow while still being upbeat metal. Solid album, I'll come back to a few songs. I like an album with strong vocals, and this was a little too heavy on just instrumentals with some incoherent screams, but it was fun.

What a nice entry with some punch. Good, heavy leaning rock that is mostly straight-forward and doesn't spend too much time getting off track. Great rhythm with heavy riffs. And at just 42 minutes long, it's a nice excursion.

Wish I could hear this live, I bet it kills.

Heavy rock

I've never listened to it before but I'm not really surprised I enjoyed it, it's definitely right up my alley. Drumming is phenomenal and the guitar work is really good too. Perhaps it meanders a bit too long however.
