The Allman Brothers Band
4/5
76/1001 :: Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East Heard before? ✅ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 8 Listen before you die: Yes Fav Songs: Statesboro Blues, Trouble No More, One Way Out, Whipping Post Seriously live blues albums don’t get much better than this. Gregg Allman is arguably the greatest blues singer of all time and it’s all on display here. Coupled with the dueling guitars of Dickey Betts and Duane Allman they’re out here doing gods work. The 2nd disc is a little slow but Whipping Post makes up for it. Good lord this is great

78/1001 :: A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm Heard before? ✅ Would I revisit? ➖ Rating: 7 Listen before you die: Yes Fav Songs: Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It, I Left My Wallet in El Segundo I think the first Tribe song I ever heard was Can I Kick It?. The fact that they sampled Lou Reed resonated with me even though I don’t think I really knew that at the time (1990). This album is probably more influential than it is great and as went through it today I realized it runs a little long. It’s also not their best IMO but as Tribe’s first album it’s pretty monumental and has some all timers sprinkled in. They really bridged the gap between 80s hip hop and 90s Hip Hop. They’re also the ultimate conscious Hip Hop group. They’re actually so good at it, It’s probably why I don’t really like that kind of rap. Because I would rather just listen to Tribe. Tribe always came off as cool AF too. I love that their lyrics have an edge to them but they’re not trying to be tough. They’re just so smart and so is the production. Lastly, beyond just a lyricist Q-Tip is a hell of a producer. I’m sure they’ll be other Tribe albums in this run. Excited to get to those.

49/1001 :: Ravi Shankar - The Sounds Of India Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Rating: 6 Fav Tracks: Dádrá Listen before you die: Yeah (for reference) The whole time I was listening to this all I could think of is what it would be like to listen to this with George Harrison and smoke hash. It’s a vibe and when you listen you can hear the influence it had over George and how it made its way into Beatles albums. Specifically Love To You on Revolver. There were direct lifts from these classic Indian sounds to that song and other Beatles songs. The album does some explaining before getting into songs which is a little weird but also helps provide context. So yeah, anyone who appreciates the Beatles should listen to this but I’m not sure I’d go back to this. While really interesting it’s just not my thing.

Rod Stewart
2/5
22/1001 :: Rod Stewart - Gasoline Alley Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Rating: 4/10 Fav Tracks: It’s All Over Now, Only A Hobo, Gasoline Alley A Rod Stewart album is definitely not something I would ever reach for and here we are… Cool thing about this album is Ronnie Wood (Rolling Stones) basically plays on every track and helped him write the title track. Ronnie also produced the album which makes me think this is almost more a Ronnie album that Rod sings on. Rod has writing credits on 3 tracks here but it’s mostly covers. In typical Rod fashion he’s out here doing song by Bobby Womack, Bob Dylan, Elton John and more. Overall the album was fine. For a Sunday morning it was neither perfect nor offensive. Lastly, the artwork is quite bad… On to the next!

Count Basie & His Orchestra

62/1001 :: Count Basie - The Atomic Mr. Basie Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 6 Listen before you die: Yes NGL I barely listened to this. That said it’s one of the funner jazz records I’ve heard so far in this (1001) project. Lotta swing. Be great at a wedding. Will revisit when the mood is right…
