Absolute trash
Def Leppard · 1 likes
1/5
Not a good album, in an away I’m glad that this process hasn’t proven all my pre held opinions wrong.
One plus point is that I felt like I was about to watch an episode of gladiators a couple of times.
Miles Davis · 1 likes

If you’re listening to jazz it may as well be this
Goldfrapp · 1 likes

The floor pastry version of portishead
Arctic Monkeys · 1 likes

I always had a bit of an aversion to artic monkeys around the time of this album. I think I decided they were too cool or mainstream at the time. I listened more to their later albums, but never really went back to this one. Listening now I missed out. Undeniably great album, no bad songs, a fair few fantastic ones.

All Ratings
The Gun Club
4/5
Very pre-pixies /country punk.
Janelle Monáe
3/5
Good album. Don’t think I’d listen again. The double album format made it feel a bit unfocused.
T. Rex
4/5
Joan Armatrading
2/5
Just couldn’t get into this one
Wu-Tang Clan
5/5
The Smiths
2/5
The few Jonny Marr hits aren’t enough to rescue this for me. Never been into the smiths and this hasn’t changed my mind
Laura Nyro
2/5
Top tip. Change your phones output to mono before listening. Otherwise you get the completely unhinged production.
There’s a few great songs on here, but it’s so mixed that I couldn’t quite get past the ones that didn’t work.
Queen
2/5
Not listened to this before and although there are a few great tracks I can’t say that I enjoyed it overall. Feels like they’re still working out what their style is at this point.
Rush
4/5
The first side of this album is amazing. It looses steam a little in the second half but that doesn’t take away too much from my enjoyment of it. The production and mix, at least on the 2012 reissue I listened, was great. A really good sounding album
The Cult
3/5
Enjoyed it, but almost certainly won’t go back to it either.
Ice Cube
3/5
The Cure
2/5
Maybe there’s a time and place I’d enjoy this album but it’s not right now.
David Bowie
4/5
Not my favourite of the Berlin albums but still a very enjoyable album.
Nitin Sawhney
3/5
I doubt I would have ever listened to this album if it wasn’t for this site, and I’m glad I did. At its best it gives portishead / Massive attack vibes, but there’s two or three too many elements/genres trying to be mixed in here for it to fully work.
2/5
I understand that this is a very good prog rock album. But it’s just so not my thing, that I couldn’t get into it.
Might be one I need to come back to again.
Radiohead
5/5
I started this album thinking I’m not going to just give it 5 stars because it’s Radiohead. But by the time pyramid doing had finished that was out the window.
Would probably be a 4/5 on the Radiohead album scale
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
I don’t have a huge amount to say about this one, which might means it’s a bit generic/boring. But it’s also so clearly a great album.
Spiritualized
3/5
If I ever want to listen to spiritualized I’ll listen to ladies in gentlemen.. So this is the first time I’ve listened to this album. I enjoyed it. But it’s not changed my view that there’s only one of their albums I’ll go back to regularly.
Bob Dylan
5/5
Some albums are classics for a good reason.
Queen
3/5
I really thought this might be the queen album I really enjoy. But no, a few great songs but all over the place in quality.
Badly Drawn Boy
1/5
Basically nothing going on here. But yet somehow still an hour long. Depressingly the few chances he does take are the worst bits.
The Saints
4/5
Not heard this one before & enjoyed this one a lot. I can see myself listening again.
ZZ Top
3/5
Just through the power of large number there’s some great riffs in here. I’m always surprised by how incredibly cheesy this kind of hard rock is. Did people find this intimidating, was this ever “alternative”?
Prince
3/5
Yet again a double album that could be better as a single album. Too much Prince in one sitting.
The Teardrop Explodes
3/5
Goldfrapp
2/5
The floor pastry version of portishead
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Really enjoyed this one, feels like the generator should give you two days for this one since it’s so clearly two albums.
Amy Winehouse
2/5
Really not for me. Always feels controversial to say but I never got the Amy Winehouse hype.
Def Leppard
1/5
Not a good album, in an away I’m glad that this process hasn’t proven all my pre held opinions wrong.
One plus point is that I felt like I was about to watch an episode of gladiators a couple of times.
The Beach Boys
5/5
What an album, nice for album generator to give me a treat on a Monday morning.
Frank Black
3/5
Fun album, but no way I’d go back to it over Doolittle or surfer rosa.
Robert Wyatt
2/5
This album is all over the place, every time it hit me with a song I enjoyed the next one would be mind numbingly boring or unlistenable.
Arctic Monkeys
5/5
I always had a bit of an aversion to artic monkeys around the time of this album. I think I decided they were too cool or mainstream at the time. I listened more to their later albums, but never really went back to this one. Listening now I missed out. Undeniably great album, no bad songs, a fair few fantastic ones.
Depeche Mode
4/5
Really enjoyed this one. Will listen again
Pink Floyd
4/5
Might revisit this review when dark side of the moon inevitably comes up on this list and I can confirm if I’m right that I prefer that album.
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
3/5
I listen to some older albums and you can’t believe they’re not more modern. This is not one of those. Enjoyed listening to it. Apple Music decided to play “don’t think twice it’s alright” straight after which I think was a little mean.
Neil Young
4/5
Really not a fan of the orchestral songs on this album. But they can’t stop it being great.
Bad Company
2/5
Rock steady? More like steady rock amiright?
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
Second CCR album and I enjoyed this one too. Not as much as green river. But still, a nice surprise.
Miles Davis
3/5
I could pretend I’m going to listen to this again and give it a higher rating but it’s not true. I enjoyed it, but not something I’d go out of my way to listen to.
The Rolling Stones
5/5
Pretty good this…
Liz Phair
3/5
Hadn’t heard this one before. I enjoyed it but I listen to so many albums that scratch this itch that I don’t think I’ll end up revisiting it.
Big Brother & The Holding Company
4/5
I’d not heard this before and enjoyed it enough that I think I’ll listen to it again.
Crosby, Stills & Nash
3/5
The Killers
2/5
The most disappointing thing about this album is that “The Fillers” joke has been made too many times already.
Such a front loaded album that I think they must have known what they were doing. Also the mixing and production on this really annoys me. The vocals and drums sound awful to me.
Brian Eno
4/5
This is very much my kind of album. Bit of a weird one to review because sometimes I give an album 2 stars because it’s not for me but I understand why it’s on this list. I think this is the opposite, there are better entry points for this type of ambient/electronic music, hopefully they’re also on the list!
Tricky
3/5
Greggs’ Portishead
Jack White
3/5
Another slightly odd pick for albums you MUST hear before you die.
“You gotta listen to this jack white album that’s neither his best nor his worst work!”
James Brown
3/5
I enjoyed this, but inevitably wont come back to it. Always nice to get a shorter album, doesn’t outstay its welcome.
As is often the case with this age of record switching to mono was a must.
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
Decent if not a little forgettable
Louis Prima
5/5
Feels like everyone is having a good time on this album, and the whole thing is infectious.
Never would have listened to this without doing this, so all the better.
The White Stripes
4/5
16 songs in 40 mins. If you get fed up of one just wait 30 seconds.
Billy Joel
2/5
Album got off to a good start, and I thought I was about to have another pre conceived view ruined. But it all slowed down too much and got too sickly for me.
Sister Sledge
4/5
First disco album on this list so far, and Nile Rodger’s production is always great to listen to.
Supergrass
4/5
David Bowie
3/5
Not a bad album but not one I really ever go back to listen to. Another odd choice for the list.
Prefab Sprout
4/5
Lots of 80s sounds on this one, like emptying a toy box. But unlike some albums it kinda works on here.
Borderline 3/4 I’ll probably need to revisit
Marty Robbins
1/5
Other than the fact that this kinda music makes me feel like I’m playing fallout (track 1 is actually featured on one of the games) I’m really not a fan. 16 short story’s about killing cowboys and/or being shot set over fairly forgettable western music.
The Rolling Stones
2/5
Really not rolling yet when they released this
3/5
Enjoyed the album but not one of my favourites from blur.
The Who
1/5
Worst album I’ve listened to on this list so far. Lots of trash with a few decent songs in the middle, but even they feel unfinished.
Ramones
4/5
There’s one absolutely incredible album across the first three Ramones albums. I still enjoy them individually though.
Orange Juice
3/5
Kinda enjoying listening to these 80s albums that I wouldn’t listen to otherwise. Don’t think I’ll revisit this one though
The Everly Brothers
3/5
Just fine
Red Hot Chili Peppers
1/5
Awful…
One of the first bands and albums I really got into as a kid. And going back now I was hoping I’d listen and figure out why.
On the few songs it works it’s down to John, Flea and Chad clearly all being exceptional musicians. But then Antony nearly always ruins it with the worst lyrics or generic vocals.
To cap it all off the mixing, even on the remaster is so bad that it really only could work on a crap radio speaker or the cd headphones that came with the player.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
3/5
Definitely belongs on the list. Definitely won’t choose to listen to it again.
The Zombies
5/5
Easy 5 stars.
Mudhoney
2/5
Apple Music continues to be deliberately mean to these albums. Auto played after this was teen spirit by nirvana. Then gigantic by the pixies.
Electric Light Orchestra
3/5
Not the Beatles or Pink Floyd. But listening to it.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
I always get a bit lost with Bob Marley and it does start to blend into one a bit for me. But I’ll certainly come back to this one again.
John Cale
2/5
It’s clear from listening to this that John Cale is a huge fan of this album. But me, not so much. Some stuff to enjoy but otherwise pretty plodding and dull.
Radiohead
5/5
Its dark my 4pm and has been. Raining for days. Perfect Kid A weather.
One of my favourite albums from probably my favourite band. 1 month before I’m off to see them in Copenhagen.
The Band
5/5
Ended up listening to this one twice, which is a good sign. Might end up a 5 star album after some more thought.
I read that this came out 4 days after abbey Road. Which is extremely bad timing
Green Day
3/5
Disappointed to report that those other kids were right and that green day are better than red hot chilli peppers. Still not going to listen to this again though.
Fats Domino
2/5
I listened to it twice and still can’t remember it.
The Smashing Pumpkins
3/5
A bit too up and down for it to be one of my favourites but enjoyable overall
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
I preferred the other bob marley album I listened to on this list. But still enjoyed it.
Suede
4/5
Great, and another one I’d msissed before now.
Jimmy Smith
3/5
I always find reviewing jazz albums difficult. Because it’s all about where you listen to it. In the car as a focused listen. I don’t particularly enjoy it. But playing on a vinyl in a bar somewhere, this would be great. So I think I like the idea of jazz more than the music.
Soft Cell
3/5
A few great songs. Also sex dwarf
Massive Attack
4/5
Not the right massive attack album. But still a good one
Wire
4/5
Great album, and not heard it before either, the system works!
Nine Inch Nails
4/5
Such an intense album, just on the border of being too much to enjoy. But I do enjoy it, bordering on a 5 star album for me.
Soundgarden
3/5
Feels a bit like a compilation rather than an album, and reading about how it was put together that makes sense. Black hole sun so good that it rescues the album on its own.
Massive Attack
4/5
I don’t listen to this album as much as mezzanine. But it really is great. 1991 as well, compared to what else was going on in music at that time this album must have felt wild.
Stan Getz
3/5
Feel sorry for this album which has been abused by soundtracks for so long. If you ignore the shopping channel vibes then it’s a good album.
Franz Ferdinand
4/5
The nostalgia I feel for this album clearly plays a part. But I enjoyed listening to this album again way more than I thought I would. Criticisms that it rips off television, the wire, sparks. Well yea, that’s music. Otherwise we might as well all go back to listen to beethoven.
You could have a “indie disco” night and just play this album twice and call it a night. If you hate that you won’t like this album. But I remember those nights and they weren’t all bad.
Fleet Foxes
5/5
Somehow sounds massive and intimate at the same time. One of my favourites
The Coral
1/5
A few tracks into this album and I’m wondering why the author would think I need to hear this before I die. Here’s my theory.
If you had asked me what I thought of the coral before listening to this album I would have said, pretty good, based on hearing “dreaming of you”. Maybe this is the authors way of making sure as many people as possible know they’re absolutely garbage.
The Black Keys
3/5
I don’t dislike this album. I used to listen to it semi regularly. It is a bit samey and long in the end though. El Camino is the album I’d go back to now if I wanted to listen to them again.
Sonic Youth
4/5
I was late to sonic youth, and then haven't listen to this for 10+ years. Not surprised to find it’s still a great album.
Miles Davis
5/5
If you’re listening to jazz it may as well be this
Duran Duran
4/5
This process is helping me understand 80s synth pop in the context of what came before it I can really see why it was so popular. Like everything some of it holds up and some of it doesn’t. But I think this does
Manic Street Preachers
2/5
Really not a lot to say about this
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Billy Bragg
4/5
Feel like I’ll end up listening to this one again
Buena Vista Social Club
5/5
So good, some songs on here I’m not going to stop thinking about for a while.
Sade
4/5
Morrissey
1/5
Absolute trash
Paul McCartney and Wings
3/5
Such a good songwriter but it feels like Paul needs someone with him telling him it needs to be weirder while he’s doing it. A few great songs but I can’t imagine I’ll come back to it.
Curtis Mayfield
2/5
I don’t know why but I just didn’t really get into this. Maybe I need to revisit it later
Einstürzende Neubauten
2/5
Better than badly drawn boy
ABBA
2/5
Synth pop abba 👍
Ballad abba 👎
The opposite problem that I have with queen albums. They need more songs where they’re taking themselves less seriously.
Deep Purple
4/5
I haven’t listen to this since I was 13 which I think is the best age to listen to this.
If I was being a bit harsh it would be 3 stars but gets an extra one because it’s also one of my dad’s favourite albums and I remember it being one of the very first albums I listened to.
Kraftwerk
5/5
1977!
The Byrds
3/5
So weird to me that this was released with 5 Dylan covers. Ultimately I enjoyed it though.
Leonard Cohen
5/5
It’s not a ground breaking take to say Leonard cohen is a hell of a song writer, and something I kinda knew already. But somehow I’d not listened to this.
Absolute game changer, now on the short list for my favourite albums of all time. It’s also sent me on a Leonard Cohen binge. But nothing so far has matched this.
Actually an album you need to hear before you die.
Django Django
3/5
Listened to this a fair bit when it came out and enjoyed it. Some cool songs but runs out of ideas a bit I think.
The Divine Comedy
3/5
I feel like the divine comedy were really popular with an extremely specific half/quarter generation. I kinda enjoy some of their stuff but I’m not going to decide to listen to it on my own.
The Pretty Things
4/5
Really good, and not heard it before. Heavy Beatles vibes, but there’s some other stuff going on here that’s pretty unique
Coldplay
2/5
“People like Coldplay and voting for nazis. You cant trust people Jeremy”
Feels like an unbelievable cynical cash in on ok computer.
Stephen Stills
2/5
So long. so little going on
Napalm Death
1/5
Kinda fascinated about what this album is trying to do. Is it meant to be scary? Intense? Badass?
Sounds like an angry dog barking over the sloppiest metal head garage band rehearsal of all time.
Kinda made me laugh in a few places, is that what they were going for?
It’s got to be 1 star. But I am glad I have listened to it.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
I really wanted to enjoy this album, and I’m still convinced at some point it’ll click and I’ll get more into it. But just not there after this listen.
Fatboy Slim
1/5
Another one that I have to assume the author wants everyone to listen to only to make sure we all know this album is complete trash.
Somehow this is over an hour long. Each song has one idea that is then somehow stretched to 4 minutes each.
The Byrds
3/5
Not sure this belongs on the list. Its… fine
Q-Tip
4/5
This was great, completely passed me by at the time this was released
Dr. Dre
3/5
Unsurprisingly the production on this album is great. I think it gets a little bit reparative in the end. It stills good one.
The Last Shadow Puppets
2/5
Forgot this album existed. Would have been better off that way
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
3/5
Enjoyed it. But didn't click for me. Might need to come back to it
Pink Floyd
3/5
Too long for me to want to listen again. But not the worst pink Floyd album on the list so far.
Iggy Pop
4/5
Surprise Bowie album, and a good one at that.!
David Bowie
4/5
Not one of my more listened to Bowie albums. But really great.
Various Artists
3/5
Maybe the definitive Christmas album. I don’t recommend reading the Phil Spector wiki whilst listening.
The Cars
4/5
Like a more mainstream talking heads. I enjoyed this one
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
5/5
Great album, one of my favourite’s from Neil young.
Taylor Swift
2/5
Sounds a lot like a national album. Which I like. But with all the experimentation and risk removed. All becomes a bit of a bland mush, probably because for some reason they decided it needed to be an hour long.
The lyrics and songwriting don’t work for me. But clearly I’m not the target audience. And like all massive pop artists, this is an album made with a target audience very much in mind.
John Lennon
3/5
A few great tracks. But like the McCartney solo stuff it’s just missing some of the magic.
Is this the start of the diss track?
Neneh Cherry
2/5
Full of 80/90s attitude! It feels so forced. And it’s a full hour long!
George Harrison
5/5
Easily the best of the Beatles solo albums. The only caveat to this 5 stars is you have to stop at the Apple jams.
The Specials
2/5
I think ska is my least favourite genre of music. Which makes reviewing these albums tough. I dislike this more than some albums I’ve given 1 star. But this album does seem to have some ideas, even if i dont like any of them.
Lynyrd Skynyrd
3/5
Get it, glad I listened to it. But probably not going pick it out again.
Skunk Anansie
2/5
This one grew on me as I listened to it, then outstayed its welcome by going on for too long.
Portishead
5/5
Just great. Interesting hearing some of bands trying to do similar things that are on this list. Very few get anywhere close to this.
Beastie Boys
5/5
First thing I did when I finished this album was start it again immediately.
Prince
4/5
Second Prince album I’ve listened to on this list. Enjoyed this one way more, even coming in at over an hour.
LCD Soundsystem
5/5
As the quality of both the sound system and copies of the music increase over the years I’m still spotting little new elements in this album. One of my all time favourites.
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Another great album by leanard cohen. I thing the existence of songs of Leonard Cohen over shadows this a bit. Which is Very similar but seeming just a better album. But I really enjoyed this one too.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
3/5
Fun listening to this after hearing most of these songs individually in various media over the years. Not sure I’ll come back to it though.
Booker T. & The MG's
2/5
Music before the Beatles continues to be odd. Enjoyed some of it in a chilled out background kinda way.
Rahul Dev Burman
3/5
I still don’t know what I think about this one.
Depeche Mode
5/5
Makes sense that this came out in 1990. It feels like the perfect version of the 80’s synth music.
Iron Butterfly
2/5
Lots of meh on this album. The one track everyone knows is inexplicably long. I had it on in the background and I was so confused when the main riff kicked back in I thought something had gone wrong.
Lloyd Cole And The Commotions
3/5
Quite a nice little album. Certainly never would have found it otherwise.
Quality is up and down a lot. I think there’s an excellent EP in here.
Carole King
5/5
Yup, this is an album you need to listen to before you die.
Harry Nilsson
3/5
A real mix of quality on this album. At times so jarring that I could really get into it.
Mylo
2/5
Another uninspired electronic album from the early 2000s
The Byrds
4/5
My favourite of the Byrds albums on this list so far.
Arcade Fire
3/5
Hmm, a weird one to review. This isn’t anywhere near as good as I remember it being. It starts to come together in the second half but the whole thing seems a bit full of itself.
Adding in the weird vibe from the accusations surrounding Win Butler and I can’t imagine I’ll come back to this again.
Luckily I’ve discovered violator by Depeche Mode which is just better than this album anyway. So I don’t need to feel conflicted.
The Beta Band
2/5
Weird pick, just not a lot going on.
Blue Cheer
2/5
The wiki describes this as heavy thunderous blues that would later be described as heavy metal. And I would like to suggest we all start calling metal “thunder blues”.
In terms of the music itself. It was kinda interesting to listen to but can’t say I particularly enjoyed it.
Radiohead
5/5
Such a great album, coming up to a scary 20 year anniversary (because it feels like it was five years ago).
I think everyone assumed that it couldn’t be the best Radiohead album because ok computer and kid an already existed. But the more you listen to it the closer it gets for me.
A contender for my favourite album of all time.
Beck
3/5
Not as good as I remember it being. Still a few great songs on here though
Super Furry Animals
3/5
Decent album. Didn’t really stick with me
Supertramp
2/5
A few good tracks but for the most part bland and boring.
The Temptations
2/5
I can’t believe this is the best example of this kind of music. Every song felt the same and very uninteresting. Apple Music auto played the four tops straight after which I immediately liked more.
Maybe it would better if I heard the songs individually.
Minor Threat
3/5
Held my interest during its short run time. But won’t listen again
The Shamen
1/5
So much effort to listen to this album. Which made it even more annoying that it’s just a bit rubbish.
David Bowie
5/5
What an album! Two halves that are so different, but somehow work together perfectly.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Reviews saying there’s no filler songs on here are nuts. Despite that and the fact it’s 40 mins too long. It’s still a four stars for me. Probably a version of this that would end up in my favourite albums of all time.
Brian Wilson
4/5
This album feels like completely unfiltered Brian Wilson. And that’s a good thing
New Order
2/5
I can’t fully explain why this didn’t work to me when other albums from new order and other stuff from this genre/time period do. It all strayed a bit too far into that weird artificial midi sound space.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
Can you imagine being as cool as Marvin Gaye is in the 70’s? I can’t. But it’s fun to pretend for a while when you listen to the album.
The Kinks
3/5
Good but starting to blend in with some of the other albums like this now.
Astrud Gilberto
1/5
Often when I listen to albums and I’m not into them I give it two stars. Because I imagine someone else will like it. When I can’t think of who the album is for that’s when it gets 1.
Dion
1/5
A bit of a nothing album
Sex Pistols
3/5
Undeniably the energy on the album is great. It feels radical even if it’s undermined by the by subsequent revelation that John Lydon is an idiot.
I don’t think I’ll go back to it again but I did enjoy it.
The Cure
4/5
Enjoyed this one. The tone shifts on this album caught me off guard a couple of guard a couple of times. It can go from super dark on one track to cheerful on the next. But it works.
Bauhaus
4/5
What a cool album. Really enjoyed the sound and vibe of this one. Not heard of it before either!
Janis Joplin
4/5
Not one I would have listened to without this list. And tests my scoring system of 4 stars for enjoyed it and will be listening to it again. Because I’m still not sure it’s my thing. But it feels like objectively a great record.
Radiohead
4/5
The dilemma here is do I just give all the Radiohead albums 5 stars. To show that I’m not just a complete fan boy I’ll give this 4 as the album I go back to least (other than pablo honey obviously). But know that it’s a very high 4 stars….
Incubus
1/5
When people ask me what kind of music I like I tend to say "all sorts" I think it's probably a rubbish answer, because people like to pick sides and saying I like a bit of everything makes it sound like I'm just not into music rather than being really into music.
I think the exception to that might be nu-metal, I think there's the odd song i could listen to and enjoy in a kind of guilty pleasure kind of way. But a whole album is just too much, and this album certainly hasn't changed my mind.
So now I'm going to answer what type of music do you like with "not nu-metal" maybe that's better.
William Orbit
1/5
I like electronic music. I like ambient electronic music. But every time I see a 90s electronic album I've not heard of on this list my heart sinks because it's almost certainly going to be absolute rubbish. This one continues that trend.
Pretenders
3/5
Really feels like this is two different albums. I like the back half much more than the first.
Joe Ely
2/5
Heeee haw
Just too country for me.
The Mars Volta
2/5
Weird one. If someone told me this was their favourite album I’d totally get it. But it’s really not for me. Get why it’s on the list though.
Alice In Chains
3/5
Grunge is such a weird genre in retrospect. Really nirvana was a complete outlier and this is more like the typical grunge sound. I enjoyed listening to it. But not so engaging that I imagine I’ll come back and listen again.
OutKast
5/5
Always enjoy listening to this. Although it’s not actually an album I go back and listen to in full very often. I think if I was nit picking I’d say the balance of skits to songs is a little off and it does run a little long. But none of that stops it from being one of the all time great albums.
Kings of Leon
2/5
It’s ok, but even with a couple of catchy songs it somehow dragged a little even at only 37 mins. I’ve always maintained that the first couple of Kings of Leon albums are good. But this isn’t as good as I thought it was. So maybe it was just the first one?
Side note: I can’t understand a thing he’s saying. Like this is Sigur Ros but for the southern United States.
Gil Scott-Heron
4/5
Enjoyed this one. What a wild time it was when Gil Scott-Heron wrote these songs. Glad that as a society we’ve sorted out all those problems and learned our lesson….
Air
5/5
Love this album, interesting, chilled out and well produced. Saw them perform the whole album live a year or two ago now and that was a great experience too.
Cornershop
2/5
First couple of songs into this and I was thinking this was going to be at least three stars maybe 4. Then it mostly just fell apart. There’s probably just about a decent EP in here. But certainly not a 54 minute album…
Röyksopp
4/5
This is my kind of thing, and I haven’t listened to this before. I don’t think it’s one of the best of electronica albums but enjoyed it enough that I’ll probably listen to it again.
Boston
3/5
Unbelievable levels of cheese, but I kinda enjoyed it? There are some fantastic riffs in here too.
I might even come back to it again, in which case I may have to, (quietly…) revise this rating up.
Spacemen 3
3/5
Classic 3 star fare. The problem with this is not that it’s a bad album but that it’s not spiritualized, specifically we’re floating in space. But it is close enough that it reminds you how good that album is.
Slade
1/5
Really not much to say about this, all blends into one. And it’s one I don’t like.
Isaac Hayes
2/5
I don’t think I’m in the best position to appreciate this album having never seen the movie. But it doesn’t really feel like something you’d want to actively listen to.
Worked quite well as background music as I was working. Nearly made working on corporate PowerPoint slides interesting.
Little Richard
3/5
Fun album and interesting to hear this really early stuff. But not enough going on for me to come back to it again.
Bob Dylan
5/5
Fantastic album. Looking forward to listening by to it again once I get my Bonneville later this month. Feels like the correct way to listen to this is on whilst riding a bike.
Lucinda Williams
2/5
Not very fair for the site to generate this the day after blonde on blonde. Reading that this album took 6 years in the studio is mad but makes sense. The whole thing seems overly polished and a little cold.
Van Morrison
3/5
Hmm, some good stuff on here but not sure it’s particularly for me. May need to reassess
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Great album, not much more to say!
Alexander 'Skip' Spence
2/5
The story of this album is wild, a guy recovering from a mental health crisis is put on his own in a studio and the tapes are left recording. Unsurprisingly it’s not a good album.
The Cramps
2/5
I don’t feel particularly better for having listened to this. Not bad, but very forgettable.
Bob Dylan
4/5
3 of 8 bob dylan albums on this list done now. I’m worried that, like a precious natural resource, I’m running out, and will be left in a bob dylan dessert for the last 500 albums.
I don’t quite enjoy this as much as some of his other famous albums. But it’s still great.
Sam Cooke
4/5
A great best of compilation, that also happens to be a great live album. Gives you a sense of what it was like to be there. I could easily see me putting this on again.
James Taylor
3/5
Very pleasant if not a bit dull. Lots of childhood memories associated with this. Some good - Sunday roasts. Some bad - feeling travel sick whilst my dad listened to the so often that it still triggers a slight feeling of nausea. Balances out as a 3 stars.
2/5
this album feels painfully pretentious, made all the worse by the fact it really doesn't gel.
There's a few memorable songs on here. but it's another example of a 2000s album where the best parts are just worse versions of 80s/90s albums. in this case Depeche Mode doing some heavy lifting.
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
3/5
For what it is I mostly enjoyed it, and I’m glad I’ve heard it. Just can’t imagine choosing to go back to it.
Le Tigre
4/5
I’d not listened to this one before. Heard a few of the tracks individually. Really enjoyed it, a real shame there wasn’t more of this type of music going into the early/mid 2000s.
Ray Price
2/5
We need some kind of different scale for pre Beatles albums. It’s a 3 maybe even 4 pre Beatles. But it’s a 2 today.
Beck
4/5
Beck’s least silly but probably best album.
Joni Mitchell
4/5
Really enjoy this one. Another album I’d not listed to before. Maybe a 5 star but need some time to listen to it again.
Beatles
5/5
This album has a fair argument for being the best Beatles album. Which means it has a good argument for being the best album of all time. It doesn’t quite hang together as much as Abbey Road, and it could be longer. But it’s always a joy to listen to.
Common
4/5
Great album. But not enough maths for the full 5 stars.
Giant Sand
4/5
I enjoyed this one. Which was a surprise after I read the reviews. It’s a very chilled out album. And it does border on dull. But kept me interested all the way through.
Mott The Hoople
2/5
Zoggy Moonsand and The Ants From Jupiter
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
I can’t believe this would be anywhere near being on this list if it wasn’t a Bruce Springsteen album. It’s fine, but too long.
Linkin Park
1/5
It’s better than incubus and there are a couple of songs I don’t hate listening to. That’s as good as it’s going to get from me.
Eurythmics
3/5
I feel like I should like this more. A few fantastic tracks and the influences on other bands I love are clear (lcd sound system bordering on just sampling some of this!). But for whatever reason I don’t enjoy it as much as other albums of this time and genre.
The Police
2/5
Just really dull. Listened to it only an hour ago and can only remember every breath you take.
Dusty Springfield
4/5
Late 60s early 70s continues to be the best period for song writing and it’s not even close.
The Beach Boys
3/5
Just not pet sounds
Marilyn Manson
1/5
Great, I thought this album was shit, and now I know it’s shit.
Feels bad even listening to it.
OutKast
3/5
Speaker box 4 maybe 5 stars
The love below. Honestly. Probably 2.
Averages out at 3
Michael Jackson
3/5
Felt like the album lost steam in the second half. Enjoyed it for the most part though.
Feels like in the last few years everyone seems to have just decided that he’s not cancelled anymore. Which is odd because 10-15 years ago it was basically just accepted he was a horrible person.
Fugees
5/5
Another great hip hop album on this list. I’d not listened to this all the way through before. But will definitely be listening again.
Bob Dylan
5/5
The unsustainable generation of bob dylan albums from this list continues for me. I think I’m about to enter a long Dylan desert for the next 700 or so days.
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
I enjoy their other two albums more. But still great.
The Pharcyde
3/5
Has that 90s hip hop sound that makes me just want ti immediately give it a high score. But it’s all a little bit silly, to the point I don’t think I’ll go back to it again.
Guns N' Roses
2/5
Having welcome to the jungle, paradise city and sweet child o’ mine on one album is crazy. Even if they’re not my thing. The rest of the album all blends into one though.
CHIC
2/5
How does an album that only lasts 36 minutes feel so long. Each song is one, sometimes cool, idea that’s then just repeated until it’s driving you mad.
Nick Drake
4/5
I’ve not listened to Nick drake before and will definitely go and listen to more now. This process has been great for pointing out blind spots from 60s,70s and 80s albums for me. Even if there’s some trash on here too.
The United States Of America
2/5
Feels like it’s deliberately inaccessible. Every now and then even they get bored of the experimental stuff and do a more normal song that are the highs of the album. But doesn’t make up for the rest of it.
Side note. Seemingly every time I decide to try to listen to an album generated for me with my wife in the car it’s something bonkers like this.
Sheryl Crow
1/5
“Listened to Sheryl crow today.” Why? “Because I have to before I die.” - a crazy person.
Hugh Masekela
4/5
I can’t explain why I like some jazz and not others. But I like this one
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
3/5
What a weird little album, Brian Eno as executive producer. But it certainly has those Eno vibes in places. Maybe just because I was pottering around the house and garden in the sun whilst listening but I enjoyed it!
Black Flag
2/5
All energy no melody. Which I think they’d probably happily put on the poster. But doesn’t really work for me.
Alanis Morissette
3/5
Not much to say. Kinda interesting, but didn’t enjoy it enough to come back to it again.
Black Sabbath
3/5
Feels like this is them discovering a whole new thing. I like this early stuff that doesn’t get too “metal”
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Really good, my only complaint is it’s impossible to match the energy of immigrant song so it feels like it hits a immediate high that it doesn’t reach again
The White Stripes
2/5
Such a weird choice for the list. The whole album feels uncomfortable. Like they’ve had an identity crisis and are trying to prove that they’re more than the white stripes. Despite the whites stripes being awesome.
The Go-Go's
4/5
No idea this existed and was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it.
Lorde
4/5
A good modern album on the list! Nice to bump up the 2010s average
Aretha Franklin
4/5
Pretty difficult to argue against this being a great album
Ananda Shankar
2/5
I don’t know, feels like this was a bit of a novelty at the time for the different sounds it introduced. But there’s not much going on listening to it now.
Elton John
2/5
Got to be near the top for number of key changes per song. But that’s not typically how I review these.
Tiny dancer is great. The rest I’ve already forgotten.
Jeff Beck
2/5
Just quite dull.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Scrapes by at 3 stars, first half I was really enjoying it but it ran out of steam and ideas in the second half.
Cat Stevens
3/5
a nice album, with some beautiful songs, but didn't quite click for me for some reason, maybe I need to revisit it.
The Associates
1/5
Why?
This sounds like there’s three songs playing at all times and they never line up. Even the famous single isn’t great other than the opening riff.
Pentangle
2/5
I enjoyed this more than I thought. But it went on just a bit too long and the balance shifted to be too traditional in the parts of the album.
