Very pre-pixies /country punk.
Good album. Don’t think I’d listen again. The double album format made it feel a bit unfocused.
Just couldn’t get into this one
The few Jonny Marr hits aren’t enough to rescue this for me. Never been into the smiths and this hasn’t changed my mind
Top tip. Change your phones output to mono before listening. Otherwise you get the completely unhinged production.
There’s a few great songs on here, but it’s so mixed that I couldn’t quite get past the ones that didn’t work.
Not listened to this before and although there are a few great tracks I can’t say that I enjoyed it overall. Feels like they’re still working out what their style is at this point.
The first side of this album is amazing. It looses steam a little in the second half but that doesn’t take away too much from my enjoyment of it. The production and mix, at least on the 2012 reissue I listened, was great. A really good sounding album
Enjoyed it, but almost certainly won’t go back to it either.
Maybe there’s a time and place I’d enjoy this album but it’s not right now.
Not my favourite of the Berlin albums but still a very enjoyable album.
I doubt I would have ever listened to this album if it wasn’t for this site, and I’m glad I did. At its best it gives portishead / Massive attack vibes, but there’s two or three too many elements/genres trying to be mixed in here for it to fully work.
I understand that this is a very good prog rock album. But it’s just so not my thing, that I couldn’t get into it.
Might be one I need to come back to again.
I started this album thinking I’m not going to just give it 5 stars because it’s Radiohead. But by the time pyramid doing had finished that was out the window.
Would probably be a 4/5 on the Radiohead album scale
I don’t have a huge amount to say about this one, which might means it’s a bit generic/boring. But it’s also so clearly a great album.
If I ever want to listen to spiritualized I’ll listen to ladies in gentlemen.. So this is the first time I’ve listened to this album. I enjoyed it. But it’s not changed my view that there’s only one of their albums I’ll go back to regularly.
Some albums are classics for a good reason.
I really thought this might be the queen album I really enjoy. But no, a few great songs but all over the place in quality.
Basically nothing going on here. But yet somehow still an hour long. Depressingly the few chances he does take are the worst bits.
Not heard this one before & enjoyed this one a lot. I can see myself listening again.
Just through the power of large number there’s some great riffs in here. I’m always surprised by how incredibly cheesy this kind of hard rock is. Did people find this intimidating, was this ever “alternative”?
Yet again a double album that could be better as a single album. Too much Prince in one sitting.
The floor pastry version of portishead
Really enjoyed this one, feels like the generator should give you two days for this one since it’s so clearly two albums.
Really not for me. Always feels controversial to say but I never got the Amy Winehouse hype.
Not a good album, in an away I’m glad that this process hasn’t proven all my pre held opinions wrong.
One plus point is that I felt like I was about to watch an episode of gladiators a couple of times.
What an album, nice for album generator to give me a treat on a Monday morning.
Fun album, but no way I’d go back to it over Doolittle or surfer rosa.
This album is all over the place, every time it hit me with a song I enjoyed the next one would be mind numbingly boring or unlistenable.
I always had a bit of an aversion to artic monkeys around the time of this album. I think I decided they were too cool or mainstream at the time. I listened more to their later albums, but never really went back to this one. Listening now I missed out. Undeniably great album, no bad songs, a fair few fantastic ones.
Really enjoyed this one. Will listen again
Might revisit this review when dark side of the moon inevitably comes up on this list and I can confirm if I’m right that I prefer that album.
I listen to some older albums and you can’t believe they’re not more modern. This is not one of those. Enjoyed listening to it. Apple Music decided to play “don’t think twice it’s alright” straight after which I think was a little mean.
Really not a fan of the orchestral songs on this album. But they can’t stop it being great.
Rock steady? More like steady rock amiright?
Second CCR album and I enjoyed this one too. Not as much as green river. But still, a nice surprise.
I could pretend I’m going to listen to this again and give it a higher rating but it’s not true. I enjoyed it, but not something I’d go out of my way to listen to.
Hadn’t heard this one before. I enjoyed it but I listen to so many albums that scratch this itch that I don’t think I’ll end up revisiting it.
I’d not heard this before and enjoyed it enough that I think I’ll listen to it again.
The most disappointing thing about this album is that “The Fillers” joke has been made too many times already.
Such a front loaded album that I think they must have known what they were doing. Also the mixing and production on this really annoys me. The vocals and drums sound awful to me.
This is very much my kind of album. Bit of a weird one to review because sometimes I give an album 2 stars because it’s not for me but I understand why it’s on this list. I think this is the opposite, there are better entry points for this type of ambient/electronic music, hopefully they’re also on the list!
Another slightly odd pick for albums you MUST hear before you die.
“You gotta listen to this jack white album that’s neither his best nor his worst work!”
I enjoyed this, but inevitably wont come back to it. Always nice to get a shorter album, doesn’t outstay its welcome.
As is often the case with this age of record switching to mono was a must.
Decent if not a little forgettable
Feels like everyone is having a good time on this album, and the whole thing is infectious.
Never would have listened to this without doing this, so all the better.
16 songs in 40 mins. If you get fed up of one just wait 30 seconds.
Album got off to a good start, and I thought I was about to have another pre conceived view ruined. But it all slowed down too much and got too sickly for me.
First disco album on this list so far, and Nile Rodger’s production is always great to listen to.
Not a bad album but not one I really ever go back to listen to. Another odd choice for the list.
Lots of 80s sounds on this one, like emptying a toy box. But unlike some albums it kinda works on here.
Borderline 3/4 I’ll probably need to revisit
Other than the fact that this kinda music makes me feel like I’m playing fallout (track 1 is actually featured on one of the games) I’m really not a fan. 16 short story’s about killing cowboys and/or being shot set over fairly forgettable western music.
Really not rolling yet when they released this
Enjoyed the album but not one of my favourites from blur.
Worst album I’ve listened to on this list so far. Lots of trash with a few decent songs in the middle, but even they feel unfinished.
There’s one absolutely incredible album across the first three Ramones albums. I still enjoy them individually though.
Kinda enjoying listening to these 80s albums that I wouldn’t listen to otherwise. Don’t think I’ll revisit this one though
Awful…
One of the first bands and albums I really got into as a kid. And going back now I was hoping I’d listen and figure out why.
On the few songs it works it’s down to John, Flea and Chad clearly all being exceptional musicians. But then Antony nearly always ruins it with the worst lyrics or generic vocals.
To cap it all off the mixing, even on the remaster is so bad that it really only could work on a crap radio speaker or the cd headphones that came with the player.
Definitely belongs on the list. Definitely won’t choose to listen to it again.
Apple Music continues to be deliberately mean to these albums. Auto played after this was teen spirit by nirvana. Then gigantic by the pixies.
Not the Beatles or Pink Floyd. But listening to it.
I always get a bit lost with Bob Marley and it does start to blend into one a bit for me. But I’ll certainly come back to this one again.
It’s clear from listening to this that John Cale is a huge fan of this album. But me, not so much. Some stuff to enjoy but otherwise pretty plodding and dull.
Its dark my 4pm and has been. Raining for days. Perfect Kid A weather.
One of my favourite albums from probably my favourite band. 1 month before I’m off to see them in Copenhagen.
Ended up listening to this one twice, which is a good sign. Might end up a 5 star album after some more thought.
I read that this came out 4 days after abbey Road. Which is extremely bad timing
Disappointed to report that those other kids were right and that green day are better than red hot chilli peppers. Still not going to listen to this again though.
I listened to it twice and still can’t remember it.
A bit too up and down for it to be one of my favourites but enjoyable overall
I preferred the other bob marley album I listened to on this list. But still enjoyed it.
Great, and another one I’d msissed before now.
I always find reviewing jazz albums difficult. Because it’s all about where you listen to it. In the car as a focused listen. I don’t particularly enjoy it. But playing on a vinyl in a bar somewhere, this would be great. So I think I like the idea of jazz more than the music.
A few great songs. Also sex dwarf
Not the right massive attack album. But still a good one
Great album, and not heard it before either, the system works!
Such an intense album, just on the border of being too much to enjoy. But I do enjoy it, bordering on a 5 star album for me.
Feels a bit like a compilation rather than an album, and reading about how it was put together that makes sense. Black hole sun so good that it rescues the album on its own.
I don’t listen to this album as much as mezzanine. But it really is great. 1991 as well, compared to what else was going on in music at that time this album must have felt wild.
Feel sorry for this album which has been abused by soundtracks for so long. If you ignore the shopping channel vibes then it’s a good album.
The nostalgia I feel for this album clearly plays a part. But I enjoyed listening to this album again way more than I thought I would. Criticisms that it rips off television, the wire, sparks. Well yea, that’s music. Otherwise we might as well all go back to listen to beethoven.
You could have a “indie disco” night and just play this album twice and call it a night. If you hate that you won’t like this album. But I remember those nights and they weren’t all bad.
Somehow sounds massive and intimate at the same time. One of my favourites
A few tracks into this album and I’m wondering why the author would think I need to hear this before I die. Here’s my theory.
If you had asked me what I thought of the coral before listening to this album I would have said, pretty good, based on hearing “dreaming of you”. Maybe this is the authors way of making sure as many people as possible know they’re absolutely garbage.
I don’t dislike this album. I used to listen to it semi regularly. It is a bit samey and long in the end though. El Camino is the album I’d go back to now if I wanted to listen to them again.
I was late to sonic youth, and then haven't listen to this for 10+ years. Not surprised to find it’s still a great album.
If you’re listening to jazz it may as well be this
This process is helping me understand 80s synth pop in the context of what came before it I can really see why it was so popular. Like everything some of it holds up and some of it doesn’t. But I think this does
Really not a lot to say about this
Feel like I’ll end up listening to this one again
So good, some songs on here I’m not going to stop thinking about for a while.
Such a good songwriter but it feels like Paul needs someone with him telling him it needs to be weirder while he’s doing it. A few great songs but I can’t imagine I’ll come back to it.
I don’t know why but I just didn’t really get into this. Maybe I need to revisit it later
Better than badly drawn boy
Synth pop abba 👍
Ballad abba 👎
The opposite problem that I have with queen albums. They need more songs where they’re taking themselves less seriously.
I haven’t listen to this since I was 13 which I think is the best age to listen to this.
If I was being a bit harsh it would be 3 stars but gets an extra one because it’s also one of my dad’s favourite albums and I remember it being one of the very first albums I listened to.
So weird to me that this was released with 5 Dylan covers. Ultimately I enjoyed it though.
It’s not a ground breaking take to say Leonard cohen is a hell of a song writer, and something I kinda knew already. But somehow I’d not listened to this.
Absolute game changer, now on the short list for my favourite albums of all time. It’s also sent me on a Leonard Cohen binge. But nothing so far has matched this.
Actually an album you need to hear before you die.
Listened to this a fair bit when it came out and enjoyed it. Some cool songs but runs out of ideas a bit I think.
I feel like the divine comedy were really popular with an extremely specific half/quarter generation. I kinda enjoy some of their stuff but I’m not going to decide to listen to it on my own.
Really good, and not heard it before. Heavy Beatles vibes, but there’s some other stuff going on here that’s pretty unique
“People like Coldplay and voting for nazis. You cant trust people Jeremy”
Feels like an unbelievable cynical cash in on ok computer.
So long. so little going on
Kinda fascinated about what this album is trying to do. Is it meant to be scary? Intense? Badass?
Sounds like an angry dog barking over the sloppiest metal head garage band rehearsal of all time.
Kinda made me laugh in a few places, is that what they were going for?
It’s got to be 1 star. But I am glad I have listened to it.
