Album Summary
Definitely Maybe is the debut studio album by English rock band Oasis, released by Creation Records on 29 August 1994. Oasis booked Monnow Valley Studio near Rockfield in late 1993 to record the album and worked with producer Dave Batchelor, whom band member Noel Gallagher knew from his days working as a roadie for the Inspiral Carpets, though sessions were unsatisfactory and Batchelor was subsequently fired. It is the last and only studio album to feature all five original members, as founding member drummer Tony McCarroll was fired from the band in 1995. In January 1994, the group set about re-recording the album at Sawmills Studio in Cornwall, where sessions were produced by Noel alongside Mark Coyle. The results were still deemed unsatisfactory; in desperation, Creation's Marcus Russell contacted engineer and producer Owen Morris, who eventually worked on mastering the album at Johnny Marr's studio in Manchester. Definitely Maybe was an immediate commercial and critical success in the United Kingdom, having followed on the heels of the singles "Supersonic", "Shakermaker", and the UK top-ten hit "Live Forever", which was also a success on US Rock Airplay. The album went on to sell over 8 million copies worldwide and brought widespread critical acclaim. It went straight to number one in the UK Albums Chart and became the fastest-selling debut album in the UK at the time; it went on to be certified 8× platinum by the BPI for sales of over 2.4 million units. It also was successful in the United States, being certified platinum. The album helped to spur a revitalisation in British pop music in the 1990s, and was embraced by critics for its optimistic themes and rejection of the negative outlook of the grunge music of the time. The album is regarded as a seminal entry of the Britpop scene, and has appeared in many publications' lists of the greatest albums of all time. In 2006, the NME conducted a readers' poll in which Definitely Maybe was voted the greatest album of all time. In 2015, Spin included the album in their list of "The 300 Best Albums of 1985–2014". Rolling Stone ranked the album at No. 217 on its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

totally fine but also very one note.
nostalgic, great guitar segments, very good lyricism stand outs : slide away, supersonic, rock n roll star nice!
About to be controversial but I am not a fan of Oasis. I totally respect the impact they've had on culture but musically it just doesn't do it for me. Especially this album, their next album is a little better imo, with stronger hooks and song writing choices but this album for me dragged on and on. They have the occasional melody that I am a fan of but mostly the have repeated sections or ideas that feel like they never end. And the whole album feels the same, we don't go on a journey we don't have anything exciting happen. Not one for me.
Nice, couple of bangers.
Album #22: Oasis - Definitely Maybe My f’in word. 5 Stars Fav song: Colombia or Slide Away Least Fav: Up In the Sky, while not a bad song, it for me is comfortably the weakest on the album. Overall Thoughts: Probably my most listened to album of all time and probably the first bit of music I ever truly got into, which meant it was always going to be given 5 stars. This more 'punky era’ from Superonic to Some Might Say for me is the band at their peak.

Solid album
I feel like jumping fences and kickin’ cans. Let’s make it happen
I've been putting off Oasis for a really long time. Today's the day. It's good. I'm not sure how to say it - if you to measure the band and the album in size - I would not say it's "bigger than the Beatles" but it's good. FWIW I just looked it up - he was high when he said it and regrets it. So maybe I should let him off the hook after all these years. The album is still good. Super high quality around all the other similar albums in that era.
Not the best for me. The lyrics are good but the musicality is lacking to me. Solos of the songs were not bad.
2 delle mie canzoni preferite il resto dell’album buono
Consistently good songs throughout. Nothing truly mind blowing tho
Outstanding. This album was fantastic top to bottom - loved it throughout / possibly even better than morning glory 5
no falla
It's whiny and bland, generic brit pop - lad rock at its absolute lad-rockiest. But you know what, maybe not as horrendous as I've built up in my head. It's not for me, remotely. But it's fine. Inoffensive.
Just peak 90s. Too 90s, everything wrong with the 90s. But also dare I say it slaps. There are some bangers on here. I look on the Oasis ladz today in their bucket hats and football tops and I sneer at their loutishness, but deep below the surface I get it. It's anthemic. I would love to belong to something huge in the way that they do at an Oasis gig, but I just don't, and maybe that says more about me than it does about them.
What a debut. Wouldn’t call myself an oasis fan as such but I do think this album is fantastic. I love the guitar sound as much as the other reviews complain, chugging and screaming when it needs to, laughing in the face of the idea of a clean tone, with the pace of some of the songs feeling a bit like they’re escaping from the band at full sprint Slide away is a fan favourite and they’re definitely correct, what an outro. cigarettes and alcohol totally rips off T rex but in such a brash way, love it. Then live forever and supersonic too? Digsys dinner sounds almost Beatles at times to me Lyrics aren't anything at all to shout about but who cares. Another incredibly revealing Dolby Atmos remix, heard details that I’m almost certain didn’t exist before, thank you Apple. Cigarettes and alcohol sounded bad though more muddy than crisp, especially on vocals Bespoke non-ai animated cover for a change, thank you Apple
Not THE Oasis album but still a pretty good album Crazy how big of a cult following and how much influence they had with really just 2 albums 3.5
The guitar sounds off key or string too loose somewhere. Vocalist cant really sing but suits the raucous music and slightly amateurish playing. Wasnt too bad overall but no means great. Over rated band.
This is alright-to-good, but ultimately overrated. Adored by people who collect Adidas Gazelles and have a stupid haircut well into their 50s, because they can't bear the thought that it's not the 90s any more, and that's not me. Probably better at the time, it's easy-listening light rock, but I preferred the Morning Glory one.
Look, I don't hate Oasis. Their songs are catchy, and on a good day you might even catch me in the pub singing along to them. It's everything around them. It's that their music is safe and that people try to pass it off as revolutionary. It's how overplayed it all is. It just irks me.
Fine.
Never really been my thing
Fockin bangin album innit. Only thing missing is the mega hitters of their other albums, however I find this more consistent I think
I wouldn't say it's the greatest rock album ever made, but attributing fewer than 5 stars seems unfair. Skip "Digsy's Dinner".
There is some bands that think they're more important than than they actually are. Oasis is one of them.
My favourite Oasis album, side A is completely shock every person who first listen to Oasis. They're the anthems for 90's rock and roll. Start with Rock n' roll star, a chaotic sound that define Oasis and end with a simple acoustic Married with children. However, I think the most genius Noel writing is on side B, tons of interesting idea and sample ever. Side B of Oasis always the best side B of all music industry. My top 3 side A songs: Slide away, cig and alcohol, married with children. My top 3 side B songs: Half the world away, whatever, listen up
they sound like a poor Slade rip-off
I was really excited to see that my album for the day was Oasis, as I had listened to a couple of their bigger songs before and really enjoyed them, and this time was no exception. While I did enjoy a couple of songs, mostly it didnt hit for me in the way I thought it would. It was still a great listen, just didnt leave me with any new favorites to add to my rotation.
What's the story morning glory basically only got 3 stars from me because of two tracks. I feel like this album is better overall, but doesn't have any individual track that I loved. Really feel like there's no reason to have this on the list too though.
not bad - remember them from the 90s, but were not my main jam, though I could cope with them. a couple of tunes still hit the spot (e.g. f***in in the bushes)
Relentlessly plodding- a set of loud and furious songs about absolutely nothing. Turns out they were doing that irritating non-sequitur songwriting right from the start? Rescued from one star by not having the most overplayed tracks.
3/5 Oasis isn’t really my flavor, and this isn’t their best album. I relistened to this whole thing and it still didn’t leave much of an impression.
sounds like Manchester meets the Beatles… the vocals have and exaggerated accent: seemingly a choice …. guitar pop. more raw here and there….
Their 2nd best album
*Tunes guitar while being very British* Anyway here's Wonderwall
Oh, the drama!
Brilliant album. The lyrics are nothing to write home about - meandering along the scale between trite and nonsensical - and the chord progressions don't rival late-era Beatles, but this is the sound of a band fully convinced they're going to be the greatest in the world, and that radiates through the whole record. It's the Burger King of music - big, simple flavours, you know what you're getting, and damn if I don't crave it every so often. Bring It On Down is the only truly weak point for me - B-side material at best (and for a band who produced some outstanding B-sides) - but that can't prevent me giving this full marks.
Solid debut album. Get that grunge feeling from some of the tracks. Definitely not as pure brit-pop as the media here would have led you to believe. Doesn't have any of my favourite Oasis songs though.
I liked this album more than I thought I would. I thought each song was charming with no real dull spots throughout. Say what you want about the relationships in this band, but this debut album is superb
Oasis is in a weird space of being really really good but also completely unremarkable at the same time. I don’t really know how to describe my thoughts beyond that. Live Forever and Columbia are really good.
A solid Oasis record, but not might favorite one of theirs.
From being a rock 'n' roll star to married w/ children, Oasis runs the gambit of life in your early twenties. 'You're not down w/ who I am.' No group has e'er come up w/ as effective a formula for making you feel like you can live forever as the Gallagher brothers band, & they succeed most of all on their debut, really one of the great rock albums of all time. I know, I know, they are shallow, they are laddish, & they're not exactly pushing the boundaries of sound or vision, but they're also down to earth & offer the all-important wisdom that taking the time out to have a good time is almost always the right thing to do. In many ways the Ferris Bueller's Day Off of rock n' roll, Definitely Maybe says to me, 'life moves pretty fast...' Having fun is radical.
Felt like a really full sound, some songs like Columbia made me want to sit and just listen to that Jam session forever.
Haters gonna hate but I love this album.
Great album, it's not perfect but it has some damn good songs. I love the guitar sound on this album. :3
Amazing guitars and amazing outros. A little too repetitive tho, but I really enjoyed it.
This will be fun. I'm sure that I know a few of these tracks, but I'm not what you'd call a big fan of Oasis. Liam's voice can be a bit too whiny for me sometimes - that's the case in the opener. But "Shakermaker" really grooves. "Live Forever" has been played to death and has a very "of-it's-time" sound to me now, but hell - for a debut album this is an incredible run of tracks so far. Yeah, I'm definitely enjoying the non-singles tracks more here. "Up in the Sky" has a killer riff. The Beatles comparisons are certainly apt - but I'm feeling a bit of the Verve's A Storm in Heaven from a year earlier as well. The production is huge, always on the brink of becoming overwhelming, but with just the right amount of restraint applied. I'm actually surprised at how much I'm enjoying this album so far. Britpop was not easy to find in rural Idaho in the 1990s when I was a teen. Besides, in 1994 the sound of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden and STP and the like outshone everything else. My best friend bought "What's the Story..." when it came out in 1995 and we loved it, but this album feels heavier - like a cross between The Catherine Wheel and the Black Crowes. I mean, this is straight-up blues-rock on "Bring it on Down" and ZZ Top could have written "Cigarettes & Alcohol." Of course, when all of your songs are anthemic rockers, the sound begins to get a bit repetitive. That has always been my main criticism of Oasis and by track 7 or 8 my ears are craving a left-turn or two. Ah, and then the gratuitous acoustic anchor that was so common in the 90s. There are a few five-star tracks here, but overall I'm feeling 3 stars for the album. Might buy a copy if I find it used.
One thing I'm learning from this exercise is that I really do not care for Britpop
More irritating than I thought it would be. More like 1.14 stars
Never really listened to Oasis. After listening to this album I don’t really get the hype.
Or maybe, this won’t be the album that moves me. 3/5
Some timeless classics on this debut but overall it isn't as great as Morning Glory to me
Almost completely substanceless. It would be too complimentary to even call this swill derivative. The only shrewd thing these single-brain-cell lads ever did was get Beatle haircuts, but anyone who has ever actually heard the Beatles would be hard pressed for another point of comparison.
Better then expected, but I wasn't really expecting much.
I overall liked this. It's just plain fun 90s alt rock. I feel like I can draw a direct line from this album to Fontaines D.C.'s Romance, which is funny because these are the Wonderwall guys. I do wish they made some bigger creative decisions. Some of it feels formulaic. Live Forever and Supersonic were my favorites.
little generic, didn't love it. really just went by. maybe this is what established the sound by which others sound generic? maybe i wasn't very locked into it but i also didn't get the impression that locking in would uncover an astounding depth. at the end of the day i drank too much coffee, had to wait a while for the train and had a 1 star listening experience, but i know rationally it's not that bad. favorite song is Live Forever. solid 2
Rating: 8/10 Ok yeah it's pretty sick. I'm no Oasis fan, I think they kinda suck honestly but their debut has a punk/indie edge before their annoying Oasis-ness takes hold. A lot of good tracks here that all hold a consistently good quality, if it's overlong then it's just a touch. Massive reverbed guitars with psychedelic atmosphere, and catchy melodic tunes that make this one super enjoyable. Live Forever-Up in the Sky-Columbia-Supersonic is a great run of tracks for me. These guys' huge success would basically spell the end of the popularity of the indie genres that influenced the album and give way to the rise of Britpop so it almost feels unforgivable, but as it stands I'm a fan of Definitely Maybe
4.5/5
It’s the same song for an hour

One of the best debut albums and along with WTSMG, the soundtrack of my 90s. Heard it before? ✅ Listen again? ✅ Rating out of ten? 🔟
Up In The Sky tip top Supersonic aussi WoW
Listenable...not super duper enjoayble but listenable.
Masterpiece
lively, makes me wanna drive a pickup on the californian coast, aviator shades glinting in the sunlight and a toothpick wedged between my teeth nothing like a good lasagna
Never really cared for their music or their family feuds
4.5
cool. Not my favorite, but cool
A timeless classic yet also derivative.
Thursday, 24 September, 2026 Great album.
Not as consistent as (What’s The Story) Morning Glory, but this has a lot of really good songs and it’s very well-produced. Favorites: Slide Away, Supersonic.

Great Album made by absolute wanks Blur RULESS
Ok
Wasn't feeling it 3/5
Well, we've finally reached the last Britpop album of the list. It took long enough. Fortunately, we get to end on a high note with the debut album of THE biggest Britpop band of them all, Oasis. Somehow, despite this being their first album, Definitely Maybe feels like the work of a band who know exactly what they're doing. It's really good! Oasis's style was already in top shape at this point in their career, which is great to hear. There are some differences between this album and its followup, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, but this is clearly still the band who will go on to write "Champagne Supernova," so it's still a good time. The guitars are still super loud, Liam Gallagher's got the perfect voice for the band, and the songs are still super well-written. I feel like this album has a more noticeable Madchester influence than Morning Glory. I definitely got Stone Roses vibes from some of these songs, and it works well. Of course, there are still moments that are very Beatles-y, like the guitar solos on "Supersonic" which are practically stolen from George Harrison's solo song "My Sweet Lord," but if you're going to take heavy influence from another artist, you might as well take the best things from the best artists. Speaking of "Supersonic," that's a really good song! It's one of the best on the album, though the album is full of good songs. "Live Forever" is the most popular one, and I've always loved it. There's something about that chorus that just works perfectly in every way. I love it. Songs like "Rock 'n' Roll Star" and "Bring It On Down" bring in the energy, while songs like "Slide Away" and "Married With Children" give the album some emotional resonance. While I do prefer Morning Glory, I am still rather impressed by the quality of Definitely Maybe as a debut album. It's a great listen and it's not hard to see why this album made Oasis a big deal. I like it. High 4/5.
It feels petty to give this a one. Occasionally there is a catchy guitar refrain and melodic hook that really works. I can see the stadiums chanting appeal of it. But I still don't think Oasis is anything special? The run of Columbia, Supersonic, Bring It On Down was OK. I might genuinely listen to Columbia again.
Just so incredibly boring. Each track blurs into the next and they are by such a distance the weakest Brit pop band.
Nothing much.
It was definitely maybe ok. I can't stop thinking about the documentary, when noel finds out his brother is in a band, as the singer, his reaction was "but Liam can't even sing". He was definitely right about that and it is the biggest problem with this album
I figured it out: These guys sound like the fictional band in a movie about a fictional band.
Banger
"Tonight I'm a rock 'n' roll star." That is genuinely the chorus of the opening track on the debut album by one of the greatest English bands of the 1990s. You could call that the gift of prophecy. Back in the nineties, there was a sort of battle going on: who were the kings of Britpop? [Blur](http://ivo-habets.nl/6-gorillaz-2001-2-10/) or Oasis? It should be abundantly clear that I have a strong preference for Oasis. That is, particularly when it comes to *this* album. They went on to release another very decent album (*What’s the Story* and so on) with a couple of worldwide hits, but after that things went downhill pretty quickly, perhaps partly because of the impossible relationship between the two brothers at the heart of the band, and partly because of the utterly impossible behaviour of singer Liam. But back to that rivalry for a moment: is *Britpop* really such an appropriate name for the genre? Because, to my ears, this music has very little to do with pop music as a genre, even though it was obviously hugely popular. Liam Gallagher sings these songs against a guitar wall several miles high and thick, built by his brother (and songwriter) Noel Gallagher and his sidekick Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs. You can hardly call this vocal-centred music. And the compositions, however much they may have been criticised by the usual sourpusses, contain far more actual music than is customary in pop. This is alternative rock and, to be honest, despite the absence of any genuinely noteworthy guitar solos, it comes close to hard rock. The Beatles, the Who, The Jam and, certainly, glam rock are all influences here, with an unmistakable nineties coating slathered over the top. That applies to the production—or, more accurately, the mix—as well, unfortunately, because the album has been mastered horrendously loud. A textbook example of the loudness wars. That, along with the unnecessary closing track ‘Married with Children’, constitutes the weak spot of an otherwise virtually flawless album. Of course, not every song is equally good, but nothing is weak; everything is catchy, swinging and simply a joy to listen to. This is rock ’n’ roll, baby! And the highlights are stratospheric. I want to give the mesmerising ‘Slide Away’ all the credit it deserves, but the other two highlights are even more spectacular. Speaking of pop, ‘Live Forever’ is, of course, a brilliant pop song. Here, the wall of guitars is largely replaced by more arpeggiated chords . And then there’s that chorus... And that isn’t even the greatest of the great highlights. That honour naturally belongs to ‘Columbia’. What a phenomenal song. And bear in mind that the composition consists of A–D–C. That’s it. And that is precisely where the genius lies. A wall is built, and then the wall starts moving. You run away from it, but the wall is too fast. You look for somewhere to dive for cover, but there’s nowhere to go, because this wall is longer or wider than the Great Wall of China. And so it rolls right over you and crushes you. All you can do is surrender, and you find yourself in musical heaven. Genius. In all its simplicity. This is music.
Their best by a mile. 4+ stars.
Great debut album from a bunch of arrogant Manc twats
Highly impressive. Everyone knows oasis, obviously. I can play wonder wall on guitar, obviously — but I refrain, obviously. I think I’ve listened to morning glory through once or twice maybe a long time ago, but otherwise just familiar with the hits. This, however, is a rocker. I mean really, there are some monster sounds on here. It took a minute for me to take, but it got my attention big. The B side on this is lights out. How cigarettes and alcohol isn’t a mainstay on every rock & alternative playlist is a mystery to me. You can hear all of the influence of all of the great music that came before this. Very good, will involve this in my listening much more going forward.
Great loud guitar sound. Really catchy songs. Good energy.
The Gallaghers are too into themselves and even this early in their career it shows through some. It’s a solid album though and you can see why it went to their heads. A solid 3 for me that almost leans toward a 4 but doesn’t have quite enough to make it stand out.
another artist ive never really sat down and listened to, although in this case it's mostly cos i just don't really care much for britpop. for britpop, this is pretty good! but it's still britpop.... the first couple tracks are good, especially "rock 'n' roll star", but theres only so much weight that great washy guitar sound can hold before it's overpowered by how much i dislike the vocals. idk what it is about them, it's definitely not the accent, but something about the way he sings combined with the pretty mid lyrics just irritates me. almost like it amplifies how nothing the lyrics are sometimes. idk.... it'd definitely be stronger as an instrumental album imo. overall.... i really wish i was listening to blur right now.
No words needed.
This was better than I expected. Many good songs, but still a little step behind "Morning Glory". Favourites: Supersonic, Slide Away, Shakermaker, Up In The Sky and Rock 'n' Roll Star.
Look I respect oasis immensely but I’m on team blur. This is good album don’t get be wrong, but it’s not my favorite oasis and it’s not super duper groundbreaking to me. Married with children still rules however. My big complaint is that this album is LOUD. The songs aren’t bad, but it almost hurts at points. The ending of slide away is so good and rewarding but by the time you get to it while listening to the album straight through, you almost have a headache. I know that’s also kinda their thing, but this album doesn’t earn it as much as their next would in my opinion.
Great flows. The Beatles if garage band
Oasis maybe not overrated???
good but also not rlly but good
Listened before? Yes Thoughts: - Not the best or my favorite Oasis album, but still pretty good. - A lot of the songs feel a bit too similar for me. I think it's more due to the production or mixing than the songs themselves though. - I listened to a deluxe edition and have to say I enjoyed some of the bonus tracks / demos more than some of the album tracks (Sad Song is great). Favorite track(s): Live Forever, Married With Children
