Solid from start to finish. A classic rock album.

One of my all time favorite albums.

Liam's voice was something else. This is an absolute classic now. We knew it was great at the time right enough. Britpop FTW! ;oP

One of the best rock albums ever.

The soundtrack of my youth. Hard to compare any album to the ones you had in your car when you first passed your test. Still one of my all-time favourites.

Masterpiece

-Incredible album

it's Oasis, it fuckin rocks. This and whats the story are just gold, plain gold.

Fantastic debut

Randomly saw an Oasis tribute band a few weeks ago - which was funny as the lead singer was about 3 ft tall so struggled with the Liam swagger and the "Noel" couldn't stop smiling and waving to the crowd. It did remind me that Oasis have a lot of songs that I are ingrained into me (despite not listening for many years) and that they still sound good (unlike a lot of Britpop that has not aged particularly well). Their first album was always my favourite - with Slide Away my pick.

Mad for it

I’m slightly embarrassed at how much I enjoy this.

Good. Not the hits but recognisable as Oasis and I liked it

Nr. 123/1001 Rock 'n' Roll Star 4/5 Shakermaker 3/5 Live Forever 5/5 Up In The Sky 3/5 Columbia 3/5 Supersonic 4/5 Bring It On Down 4/5 Cigarettes & Alcohol 4/5 Digsy's Dinner 3/5 Slide Away 4/5 Married With Children 3/5 Average: 3,64 Pretty good pop/rock album. Would have appreciated a little bit more musical diversity.

Oasis (at least on their first two albums) really had something special. My only real criticism of this album (and Oasis in general), is that the songs kind of all blend together and are a bit too similar. Overall its a great album, and helps explain Oasis’s relevance in music history, but their follow up (you know the one) is an overall better album and more important.

Apparently the streak of 90s indie-brit-pop continues... Can't say that I care very much about Oasis; we'll see if this converts me. Out of the gate, I'm most taken by the awful, flat production. Sounds as if they fed all of the instruments into a single tiny mic and then just thre vocals over top and called it a day. The end result is the blandest sounding distorted guitar, ineffective percussion (its bad when the tambourine stands out more), and depthless bass. Add in a completely unnecessary breakdown at the end and that's a wrap. For a song called Rock 'n' Roll Star I'd hope for, well, more. I recognize Live Forever from either my sister's car or some movie. Idk, but its a fine enough song that sounds very much of the era. Columbia is a solid enough wall of sound sort of track. Cigarettes & Alcohol sounds a lot like T Rex's Bang a Gong, but less fun. A lot of that album slid by without much notice. Never bad, but never quite grabbing my attention. I did however, actually come to attention on Slide Away -- a sprawling wall of sound kind of track where the lead singer just continues to layer and repeat the title. For some reason it just works. And Married With Children is a solid song to close things out, though I can't shake the feeling that this sounds a hell of a lot like a stripped down version of Backwater by the Meat Puppets. Turns out both were released in the same year, but Meat Puppets had them beat by about 7 months. Not bad, but also pretty forgettable IMO. And I think in large part that is my assessment of brit pop... It has moments of beauty, but largely falls into a pot of one common sound that is highly palatable, but not my favorite. For this, a soft 3.

Hey, it's an Oasis album! Sounds just like every Oasis album!

I Definitely Maybe Liked this album

6.5/10- the classic pub singles stand out by a mile and are great sing alongs but the filler tracks and same-y ness really drags on. Production is really busy. Best song- slide away

So “Definitely Maybe” was an awesome debut album to be sure… Love the original sound, and the raw heaviness of the album… Not a lot of diversity throughout it though – but that’s okay due to the creativity… The stretch from “Columbia” through “Cigarettes & Alcohol” was by far the best music on the album, and “Supersonic” gets a 6-stars out of 7 from me, as it is the centerpiece of the album… In fact, earlier in the day that I drew this album, I was on a golf trip in southern Virgina with my college buddies, and we were listening to an 8-hour rock playlist on shuffle on the Marshall amp, and on the 15th hole as we were getting ready to tee off, The Universe decided to send us “Supersonic”… Absolute perfection…

They came on the scene swinging, I have to respect it.

Really solid debut from a band I only know from two songs. Definitely has a well defined sonic identity, namely heavy distortion. It’s fun. Some songs sound a little samey at times. But there’s potential here and the ones that stick out really do. As a side note - I wouldn’t mind moving away from 90’s British bands for a while… (cue a Blur album in ten seconds when I click “vote”). Standout tracks: Rock n Roll Star, Shakermaker, Up in the Sky, Supersonic, Bring it On Down, Cigarettes & Alcohol, …Married with Children

Who wrote these fucking lyrics, Dr. Seuss? Nearly every song on this record follows this simplistic lyrical rhyme scheme that makes Dr. Seuss look like Shakespeare. Here’s an example, from Up in the Sky: “Hey you, up in the sky Learnin' to fly Tell me, how high” Then, a few bars later: “Hey you, up in the tree You want to be me Well, that couldn't be” How about another example? “Shakermaker” (look, he even does right in the song title): “I've been driving in my car with my friend Mr. Soft Mr. Clean and Mr. Ben are living in my loft” One more and I’ll assume you’ve got my point, from their hit “Live Forever”: “Maybe I just wanna fly Wanna live, I don't wanna die Maybe I just wanna breathe Maybe I just don't believe Maybe you're the same as me We see things they'll never see You and I are gonna live forever” From a lyrical standpoint, this is one of the worst albums on the list.

The music was shite, it kept me up all night

44 songs?!

Definitely wankers

Skipped through most of the album. Not my jam

More Brit Pop, and the worst of it. I refuse to listen to this.

this is so bland. sounds like a fake band from a movie where people learn to rock'n'roll.

oh HECK no THREE HOURS?!?!?!?!

Classic oasis album. They where the greatest rock band to ever be, this album has all the hits like cigarettes and alcohol to slide away - the song the broke up too. Amazing band, amazing music, fantastically amazing vibes.

Peak album!

오아시스 노래를 좋아해서 이 노래가 다 좋았다. 평소 많이 듣던 노래도 있고, 많이 들어보지 못한 노래도 있었다. 하지만 다 좋았다. I love Oasis's music, so I enjoyed all the songs. There were some I listened to often and others I hadn't heard much before, but I liked them all.

So so hard to judge this one objectively. Oasis were the first band I really got into aged 16 or 17 in the mid 90s and starting to get into listening to music. I really thought that they were true rock stars and barring the Beatles the best band that there had ever been. Lucky enough to see them in concert in 95 or 96 at a mid sized venue before they started selling out mega outdoor gigs like Knebworth. My kids now like listening to some of the big Oasis hits. But even bearing all the nostalgia and bias in mind, this is a great rock debut. Snarling and aggressive but musical too. That opening trio of songs Rock n Roll Star, Shakermaker and Live Forever is stellar. Further songs like Columbia and Supersonic aren't too far behind. Yes they found a formula that worked and some of the simple rhyming lyrics don't really stand the test of time and the second side is a bit weaker with Digsy's Dinner and Married with Children arguably better off as b-sides. But maybe the album needs a break from the intensity of all the aforementioned songs. Either way this has to be a somewhat nostalgia tinted 5 stars from me.

I listened to this multiple times. Know them and knew a song but never an album. They are great!!

Biblical!

As a Brit, I am required by law to give this 5 stars otherwise a gang of middle-aged dads and 17 year olds in bucket hats swigging Dark Fruits will kill me in my sleep. It’s a great album too!

Even the B-sides are 5 star

Bonkers this was debut, easy 5

A stellar first outing from the Brothers Gallagher. Solid 5 Stars.

I’m at a 10. Just a stellar rock album, simple as that. “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?” might be the more polished & realized setlist from a top to bottom perspective, and arguably a better album experience for it, but the overall raw energy of this one combined with a confident optimism that felt like it was going to take over the world by force whether the world wanted to hear it or not… there might be something even more appealing to this album compared to their sophomore effort. Don’t get me wrong, “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?” is still an inarguable 10 in my book, and a seminal album of the 1990s, but when people have argued that this one might be even better, I suddenly find myself in agreement. Besides, you don’t get to that album’s stadium-driven tone without this one’s grittier style leading the way. In broad enough strokes, this album is a direct response to the grunge craze that took over the world, yet met with a “fuck that negativity” attitude that’s meant to lift up everyone. There’s probably no stronger examples than “Live Forever” or “Cigarettes & Alcohol”, at least in terms of lifting people up. Even the title itself, “Definitely Maybe”, feels like a direct response to “Nevermind”. “Nevermind” is a defeated word, as if you either don’t care or have given up on caring to begin with. “Definitely Maybe” is an affirmative phrase – even if it’s got a touch of hesitancy with the “maybe”, you’ve still shown there’s a level of commitment that you’re at least willing to hear out, and sometimes, that little spark is all you need. That entire spark is what “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” is all about, and it appropriately kickstarted one of the most impactful runs of music ever. I really don’t know what more to say; going track-by-track feels futile because I think this is an album you’re meant to feel out. Sure, have the lyrics in front of you to get at least a broad stroke of the meanings of each track, but otherwise, let the soundscape & vocal delivery guide your mood & just fucking rock out. If you can do that, you’ll get the intent of this album flowing through you, and you’ll understand why this was a monster hit. It’s worth all of the acclaim, it’s easily deserving of being on the list, it’s one of the easiest 10s I’ve given in a while, and it’s just a fantastic album. I’m definitely maybe coming back to this one in the future.

In my humble opinion the greatest 1st album by any band, amazing lyrics, vocal, and a tight band, Liams voice at its most powerful, I saw these live in 94 and 95, Brit pop - Wow. I’m feeling supersonic, give me me gin and tonic

Люблю первые 2 альбома оазис

solid 4.5. Não é tão consistente quanto o Morning Glory, mas as melhores músicas do Oasis estão aqui. Favs: Live Forever, Columbia, Slide Away.

Pure nostalgia scoring

Glorious.

I love Oasisssss

Definitive brit pop which defined the genre and a generation. I'd been a fan since the demo version of Cigarettes and Alcohol featured on a NME freebie cassette earlier in '94.

so many bangers. this album just keeps getting better and better. I could nitpick Oasis all day long but goddamn this shit puts a smile on my face.

Damn what an album. They aren't the best for nothing

landmakr og vibe

It's perfect.

After listening to lots of middling brit-rock - at last, something good.

Really good

10/10 absolute rock masterpiece.

5 sterne sorry not sorry liebe oasis😢😢

Definitivt dritbra. "Live Forever", "Supersonic" og "Slide Away" er så høyt der oppe, og en shoutout til "Shakermaker" og resten av gjengen.

Great album

Excellent album and my first full listen through

Definitely yes. (Although I prefer What‘s the Story Morning Glory.)

I've always liked Oasis but never thought they were god tier. But I gotta admit, after listening today I think I might have been wrong. This is feeling like potentially one of the best rock n roll albums of the past 50 years. I need to revisit this.

mi rollo

Loved it, I see why people are so into Oasis

A classic. Nothing really to add. A fantastic debut for a fantastic band

Genre defining innit

not quite the Beatles but then again, what is? "Live Forever" one of the best tracks of its decade and otherwise not much filler to be found here. a standout debut near worthy of its admittedly outsized hype. 4.5/5

It's oasis' best album and the only one I would say is a must listen. Every song is great, they really perfected their formula on the first go.

FUCKING INCREDIBLE.

great stuff, very cozy, didnt think i was gonna enjoy it as much as i have.

What a great debut - it's got so much swagger that Rock 'n' Roll Star became a self-fulfilling prophecy and Britain overlooked the fact that they never topped this.

Loved it when it came out and still love it now. Brilliant.

Actually really like Oasis. 5 from me.

I had too much fun listening to this one

Add in elements of the Beatles, Stones, Slade and Sex Pistols. Mix together with loads of attitude and posture and this is what you get. Yes the lyrics are basic as is the playing but in the end all tat matters is the end result. Classic

Rock crudo, sincero, con muchas guitarras y mucha distorsión (a veces agota, otras veces la levanta). Sin dudas, un disco que marcó parte de mi preadolescencia

I was partially inclined to give this a 4 because it's definitely not as consistent as Morning Glory. Also, after getting used to some of the live versions of these songs, the studio versions seem kind of slow and dull. But, upon reflection, I decided the best songs here are GREAT songs, and for that, it deserves a 5. A low 5.

I knew a handful of Oasis songs before; had only heard one on this album. This was great. I like the snarling vocals and the wall of sound. Rounding from 4.5.

Me encanto joya de album

Músicas de Caio Copolla

Elite, columbia a new find

They definitely insist upon themselves.

Owned . Superb stuff.

absolute classic one of the greatest debuts ever

When to listen: Gray day, candle lit, tea brewed, maybe spiked with some liquor. Loved this album: the musicianship, the variety, the lyrics.

The fact that Oasis are still so beloved despite releasing nothing but shite for their final FIVE albums is testament to how beloved and fantastic their first two are. Huge, dumb, loveable choons and lightning in a bottle chemistry and charisma and chutzpah to pull them off. (This is the exact same review I gave What's The Story Morning Glory, because to these ears the first two Oasis albums are essentially the same. Having said that I gave WTSMG 4 stars and this 5. I will not elaborate).

It's already becoming cool to hate on this. But I like me some Oasis with no wonderwall in sight. Cigarettes and Alcohol is a great anthem to a dreary morning commute and live forever might be basic but I will pour one out some day to the tune of it.

Part of me wants to truly dislike oasis, but I can’t. The album brings back nostalgia, Liam’s vocals are iconic and so satisfying to hear, the guitars, at times verging on psychedelic, are excellent. I suffered a delay in my listening schedule as I had Slide Away stuck in my head the entire day, but Columbia, as well as the version with Noel’s vocals in Disc 2 of the album, comes out as a new favourite. They knew they had something to give to the world, and they delivered it in this album.

Excelente

greatest album in history of rock

A masterpiece

Yep, good (again) Adored in my early teens, gateway to multiple bands/genres, which made me snooty towards the beginning of it all

I hadn’t heard any of this before and I really enjoyed it. It’s like I’m living in a 90’s coming of age film. Edit: 100-album calibration - changing from a 4 to a 5 since I keep going back to this!

Este álbum deja claro de principio a fin, el camino que Oasis tomaría en el futuro, en cuanto a sus melodias, sus letras, su mensaje, gran álbum debut

Such a top album to vibe a good rock

Liam’s peak voice. Noel’s peak songwriting. Slide away still gives me chills every time I hear it.

A great album that leads the way in a strong time for working-class British rock in the mid ‘90s. This is an album with a noisy energy, sound, and ambition, showcased best of all on Rock ‘n’ Roll Star, Live Forever, and Supersonic. Stick around until the end though, as my favourite songs probably are the final two, Slide Away and Married with Children. We don’t really see the variety that Oasis are (sometimes) capable of later on in their careers on this album, but I’ll let its force of sound keep it hanging onto a 5.

Probably my favourite Oasis album. It has so many absolutely brilliant bangers, from ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’ through to ‘Slide Away’, with ‘Live Forever’, ‘Up in the Sky’, ‘Supersonic’, ‘Bring It On Down’ and ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’ the pick of the rest, but really ‘Shakermaker’ is the closest it gets to a dud track. It has an almost punky aspect to it at times, and hints of psychedelia at others. You can tell this is a band who are hungry for success and really believe they’ll get it too. The energy, attitude and sense of conviction and self-belief are truly immense.

Downright awesome!!!

Biblical.

(7/7) smooth and cheerful

come on city

didn't listen to it

A band that unabashedly wears their Beatles influence on their sleeve, this is a particularly well done record, although I prefer the album they released after this one, with Liam’s more mature vocals. He sounds a lot younger on this one.

(V) One of my favorite albums of all time. Bought it heading home from a Wave game with Steph and Pam and Price.

creaming my pants

Buenisimo

Nos vemos en los lugares donde suene el britpop 💋

This album sounds like if The Beatles were inspired by the people they inspired when they made Help! (in the best way)

Ever since I was young, this has been my favorite Oasis album. Every song is a rocker. "Slide Away" was and still is my favorite Oasis song. I listen to them a lot less now, but the volume dial gets rotated very quickly whenever any of these songs start playing.

Oh no, an album I already listen to three times a week!! Depending on the day, Definitely Maybe has a claim to being my favorite album. It mostly depends on how much I dislike “Shakermaker” that day. It’s certainly my favorite of its era. The thing about Oasis is most of the criticisms of them that can be made are very valid and yet, to me, they are features rather than bugs. I’m going to get the big criticisms out of the way. 1). Noel Gallagher writes lyrics with the grace of a 6th grade poetry assignment. As a person who quite literally does not give two fucks about 90% of lyrics, I am unfazed. The vocal melodies are universally delightful. 2). They are a “Beatles rip-off.” This one is technically true but also ignores that Oasis ripped off plenty of other bands too, because: 2a). By the standards of most people, Noel Gallagher plagiarizes, like, a LOT, pretty openly. But I just can’t be bothered by that? I’m not bothered when rappers sample, I’m not bothered when filmmakers borrow shots or lines of dialogue. The White Stripes have that one song that’s nothing but quotes from Citizen Kane and I don’t really see that as a problem or feel like Orson Wells is entitled to a writing credit there. I think Joe Satriani is a prick for suing Coldplay over Viva La Vida. I think Don Henley is a prick in general but his actions toward Frank Ocean are inexcusable. There’s a bit of a difference between literally passing off stolen work as an original composition, and lifting elements and inspiration from what came before you and creating something transformative. The latter is called being an artist. And, look, it turned around on Noely G when Green Day took Wonderwall’s chord progression and called it “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” 3). The Gallagher brothers are stupid egotistical assholes with god complexes. And I love them for it. In a world where music did not work out, they’d be the two greatest insult comics who ever lived. I own a whole coffee table books of the insults they've levied at pretty much everyone and everything. Really buying into Oasis requires buying into the Gallaghers and their constant hot/coldness toward each other. The mainstream depiction is that they just can’t get along but it’s a bit more complicated than that. Liam is peak little brother who acts out because he just wants big brother’s approval, while Noel is incapable of showing affection toward anyone. In the Supersonic doc, their tour manager describes it as “Noel has a lot of buttons and Liam has a lot of fingers.” Then there’s the whole jealousy aspect of it. Liam wishes he could be the songwriter that Noel is. Noel wishes he could have Liam’s voice and his presence. 15 years of okay solo efforts have demonstrably proven that they need each other to reach their full potential. The chorus to “Acquiesce” says as much. 3a). The Gallaghers essentially anointed themselves the custodians of rock music and then they massively dropped the ball by doing too much cocaine and making 9 minute songs with 74 guitar tracks. The human element of Oasis is basically a Greek tragedy, THE HUBRIS. It’s so hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that this band was not engineered in a lab in Manchester to appeal to me specifically because Oasis was like this missing link between classic rock and punk. They're like if The Beatles got run through a Brita filter made out of The Sex Pistols (also, there's a framed picture of Burt Bacharach on the cover of the album, Noel Gallagher was speaking to me before I was born <3<3<3). In the timeline where I got into them at age 14 instead of age 29, I’d probably have taken guitar a bit more seriously when I was learning and likely also would have based my whole personality around loving Manchester City. You know that thing where musicians will say "I saw Kiss when I was 12 years old and knew I wanted to be a rock star." I saw Oasis when I was 30 and knew I wanted to be a rock star. I tried and failed with YHF to go track by track but I can do it with this one fairly easily. I'll even throw in a final ranking at the end. “Rock n Roll Star” is such a fitting album 1 track 1 in a "hey this is what this band is" sense. “I live a boring life now but I’m going to be a rock star.” I’ve seen it said that The Sopranos is a show about the first generation of mobsters who came of age after The Godfather. Oasis is like that with rock music. They did not know what a world before rock stars looked like and crafted their entire identity around the associated tropes without the slightest shred of irony. They had a conception of what a rock star looked like and said “okay we’re that.” Some kids grow up wanting to go to North Carolina because Michael Jordan went there and some kids grow up wanting to trash hotel rooms because that's what Keith Moon did. There's zero irony to any of this and the level of earnestness is almost endearing. It probably seemed hokey and arrogant singing that song to crowds of 82 people or whatever, but then Oasis basically managed to skip the whole "grinding" portion of being a band, getting signed on a fluke and putting out the then-fastest-selling debut album in UK history. Then they became arguably the biggest band of the 90s (lack of popularity in the US being the single blemish on their prime run). The outro on this song goes on for entirely too long but Oasis songs being too long is basically a signature. Also, idk if any of you watch Lost but they just straight up took the instrumentation from this song and called it “You All Everybody” because Charlie’s whole backstory is just “hey you guys remember Oasis?” "Shakermaker," as noted, is by far my least favorite song on Definitely Maybe and single-handedly prevents it from being my default favorite album ever made. Post-2000 elements added in a lot more psychedelic elements but they never really seemed to get fully competent in that milieu. "Shakermaker" could have fit in on those later albums and might have even been a standout track if it was a single in 2004. Instead, it was a single in 1994 and just feels out of place. It's also one of the more blatantly plagiarized songs Noel ever put to wax, aping, of all things, the "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" Coca-Cola commercial. Maybe that's why people always call the Gallagher's "coke enthusiasts??" The first Oasis song I ever heard was “Live Forever” on a mix CD I stole from my sister (it’s okay, she’s a bad person!) when I was, maybe, like 11. At the time I had no conception of what the tracks on this mix CD were and it was literal years later before I knew what this song was or who performed it, but I always really liked it. Then, one day in the spring of 2024, I was on a run and “Live Forever” came on my shuffle. I am famously terrible at remembering to breathe while running, which I try to rectify by singing along with music. Not like, out loud. I’m not running around my neighborhood screaming. I promise. But just kinda under my breath to myself. Something about the adrenaline and endorphins from running, combined with repeating the words “gonna live forever” out loud basically caused me to experience a form of ego death and achieve enlightenment for a fleeting moment. I am a fundamentally different person since that run. It was also the song Noel played to his bandmates that made them realize that this whole music thing might go somewhere. Even absent that, "Live Forever" is such a great song and illustrates what made early Oasis stand out so much: the songs are all so optimistic when compared to what else was out there at the time. "I remember Nirvana had a tune called 'I Hate Myself and Want to Die' and I was like 'Well, I'm not fucking having that.' As much as I fucking like him and all that shit, I'm not having that... Kids don't need to be hearing that nonsense." As funny as I find the concept of Noel Gallagher trying to be a role model to the youths, the dates don't really work for that story to be true. Also, interestingly, he himself claims that he ripped off "Live Forever" from "Shine a Light" by the Rolling Stones but I don't personally hear it. Let me know if you do. "Up in the Sky" is probably the song I feel least strongly about one way or the other. I think it's catchy but the lyrics do feel especially phoned in. Rhyming sky, fly, and high and then tree, me, and be just feels like the tank is on E. But, again, I tend to remember the tune way more than the words to most songs, so I'm not especially bothered. "Columbia" is like "Shakermaker" in the sense that it really stands out as not fitting with the vibe of the album but is unlike "Shakermaker" in the sense that it rules. I think it's maybe the only time that Oasis ever really showed influence from Madchester dance groups like the Happy Mondays or the Stone Roses (I constantly see the Roses cited as a major Oasis influence and while that is unquestionably true in terms of aesthetic with the bucket hats and the parkas and the fact that Liam Gallagher has spent the last 30 years doing Ian Brown cosplay, their music sounds nothing alike). "Columbia" has this air of menace to it where it's really danceable but also sounds like it should be the walkout song for a very British UFC fighter. It got left off the Live '25 set list and that seems to be the one knock people have against those shows. It was the first song played at Knebworth in 1996, in front of 250,000 drunk British people while Liam and Noel look like a kung fu John Lennon and Eric Forman, respectively. Go look at the video from that show and tell me I'm wrong, you can't. "Supersonic" was Oasis's debut single and was allegedly written by Noel Gallagher in half an hour while the rest of the band ate takeout Chinese food during a break in the recording session for "Bring It On Down," which was the originally intended single. Liam Gallagher's voice on this song is a blunt instrument. I always kinda describe his singing style as "man with a grudge against vowels" and that's really prominently on display here, where he mangles every vowel into every vowel. The chorus is an incredible screamalong in a crowd and the guitar line makes me want to run through a wall. I straight up think of Oasis as one of the elite hook/chorus bands in history. This is another one of those send me a zebra emoji things, except this time lets do a giraffe to mix things up. As referenced above, "Bring It On Down" was intended to be the debut single and, as much as I love it, it is far from a single. It's got that same menacing quality as "Columbia" but turned up a bit more aggressively. Not so much UFC walkout as "swarmed by biker gang." Bonus points for the clip where an audience member jumps on stage during this song and a brawl breaks out. "Cigarettes & Alcohol" starts by just full on stealing the riff to "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" (which they would do again on "Some Might Say" a year later) before Liam starts singing about "imagina-sheeawn" "ac-sheuuun" "sooonsheeeeeeyine" (there's a YouTube compilation of every time Liam sings the word "shine" as sheeeeyine in an Oasis song and it's magical). The subject matter here is the darker inverse of "Rock n Roll Star" where our narrator has stopped dreaming about being a rockstar and moved on to drugs because there's nothing else better to do. Again, there's no irony or element of self pity. It's just "life's not great so might as well have fun." Is it worth the aggravation to find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for? Watching a live crowd do a poznan during this song is magic. "Digsy's Dinner" is basically a throwaway song that exists for the purpose of answering the question "how funny would it be if Liam sang the word 'lasagna'?" and the answer is actually very. But, yet again, "these could be the best days of our lives" is such a fun thing to yell and such a nice sentiment. It's just a nice happy little song and there's a place in the world for that because we then move into "Slide Away" is one of the most truly perfect love songs in existence. The simplicity of the lyrics is in its favor and the way it builds in the outro with "take me there" repeated to the point that it will shatter vocal cords. While non-fans think of "Wonderwall" as THE Oasis song, "Slide Away" is near universally considered their best song amongst bigger fans, which is why it was the first chosen live single post comeback. AND, you can watch the 2009 iTunes Festival performance that basically turns into an onstage breakup and is shot like the climax of a movie. "Married With Children" is one of the only Liam vocals where he isn't audibly straining his voice. Taken together, these last 3 songs are this loose relationship trilogy. "Digsy's Dinner" is like a crush. "Slide Away" is the early relationship. "Now that you're mine..." "Married With Children" is the disillusion at the end of the road, capturing the frustration with all the little irritants building to the surface. It's a great closer for this album. The one element that early Oasis unquestionably cribbed from The Beatles came in the form of release schedules. Like clockwork, new singles were released every 2-4 months and every one of those singles were backed with b-sides good enough to have been on the album. Some of Oasis's best songs are the b-sides from these early albums. I could talk about those at length to but I have already comfortably cleared my longest review. So, I'll just give my endorsement to: "Take Me Away," "I Will Believe," "D'Yer Wanna Be a Spaceman?". "Listen Up" (which is basically just "Supersonic" with more major cords but also the best Liam vocal performance ever), and "Fade Away." This is the only Oasis album that does not have a lead vocal from Noel at any point except, interestingly, the vinyl release that features "Sad Song" wedged in between "Columbia" and "Supersonic." I recommend that song too because it really demonstrates the range of this band. Oasis did not reinvent the wheel on this album and no one would dare call them innovative but the way that they managed to refine rock music into this simplistic package and take over the world is awe-inspiring. With few exceptions, they're held to a shocking level of reverence by other rock musicians. The book Britpop!: Cool Britannia And The Spectacular Demise Of English Rock described Oasis's sound as "so devoid of finesse and complexity that it came out sounding pretty much unstoppable" and I love them for it. I'm glad we got Definitely Maybe before (What's the Story) Morning Glory 1). Because I like this one more; and 2). Because it lets me rant about how Wonderwall is not representative of their output and the fact that Americans view them as an acoustic pop band and not one of the best rock bands of all time has done damage to my psyche. ANYWAY, as promised, power ranking, from best to worst: 1. Slide Away 2. Live Forever 3. Cigarettes & Alcohol 4. Columbia 5. Bring It On Down 6. Supersonic 7. Rock n Roll Star 8. Columbia 9. Married With Children 10. Up In The Sky 11. Shakermaker

if you like Britpop you like this I guess I like Britpop

I think Morning Glory is the superior album, but this rocks.

Is it the greatest debut album of all time? Not for me to say.

When this album came out, I was 28 years old. I’m actually only familiar with the track ‘Live Forever’, but I actually quite like the rest of the album... :-)

Discazo

I’ve genuinely never been more excited for an album on this website. I ADORE Oasis and this album. Literally staples in my life. Fav song is ‘Supersonic’.

one of the best bands ever for a reason

“The greatest rock ‘n roll band ever”…nah! Original….nah!..especially if you know The Real People. But those first 2 albums - wow!

One of the biggest debuts of the 90's, and one of My favorite records, it shaped the sound of the 90's and personally I love it. A bit raw, it was flawless

Love this album

obviously biased as everything is but i love this album. hearing some of its songs at wembley was a highlight of my life

10/10 no hay mucho más para decir de los hermanitos más grandes del mundo. Toda una vida acompañándome

Best Oasis album for me 5 stars

ya escuchado

I NEED TO BE MYSEEEEEEELF I CAN’T BE NO ONE EEEEEEELSE I’M FEELING SUPERSONIC GIVE ME GIN AND TONIC YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL BUT HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT IT??? I DON’T KNOW HOW ONE FEELS SUPERSONIC BUT I’M FEELING IT

Just a banger of an album.

Me gustó mucho, se nota la influencia de los beatles en el sonido, me gustaron todas las canciones y por eso le doy 5 estrellas, ya que no es un género que escuche seguido y aún asi me atrapo

I love this one

Classic! What a brilliant sound, and so evocative of the time. Rock and Roll Star is a ballsy start to a debut and so many of the other tracks are classics. Only criticism is that some of the songs should have had a minute or so cut in my opinion (Slide Away). Still a 5, though.

No se basen en sus opiniones personales sobre los Gallagher. Un disco que cuenta con Live Forever, Rock n Roll Star, Supersonic, Bring it on Down y Slide Away (y me puedo seguir) es un win automático. Es rock y es divertido.

Much better than WTSMG imo. Much more raw and real.

It doesn't get more iconic and nostalgic. When energy meets timing

10/10 first album I ever listened to back in 2023.

A 5. No wonder it was so successful.

I hadn't heard this one before--I'm confident I'll be listening to it again!

Never was originally that fond of Oasis, but they have grown on me over the years. Really enjoyed this album, very tuneful.

A banger of a debut album. Few bands appear to be on top of their game on their first release, but Oasis made more than a record, they made a statement. You know the songs. You loved the songs back in the day. You still love them now. A five-star album if ever there was one.

This is how you do a debut album. The unique sound of Oasis is already there. And married with Children is incredibly beautiful

Kocham white girl music

9.5/10

Been listening to this since it came out. I know all the lyrics. Banger of an album

It's the picture of Rodney Marsh in the fireplace which firmly plants this in the 5 star category. A great debut album which I associate with the onset of parenthood. It sounds as good today.

Not quite as good as I remember but still full of bangers. It’s definitely, not a maybe.

The first and best Oasis album, where Noel Gallagher established himself as the world's pre-eminent musical babel fish. Who cares how derivative it is. Or how much is straightforward plagiarism. It does what a rock n roll record should. And then some. 5*

Hit hit hit

5 fácil. O álbum é super bem produzido, vocais do Liam são como esperados então nesse ponto né nenhuma surpresa. Os solos de algumas faixas são absolutamente satisfatórios.

Already a favorite summer album. Sounds great loud in the car with the windows down

Definitely Maybe is one of those albums I never really question and love! From the first track it feels confident, loud, and full of belief and cockiness … great album !! Big guitars, big tunes, big attitude, no messing about. It sounds hungry and unapologetic, and that energy still comes through every time I play it. For me, this is Oasis at their best. Raw, exciting, and full of intent and Manchester swagger. Five stars.

Amazing. SuperSonic. Slide Away. Live Forever. Three of the best songs of all time.

Fucking banging. Yeah bruv that shit goes hard. Fookin unreal, innit? Real talk though, great album and it sounds fantastic. What’s The Story has all the hits but this one is just as good!

Me remémore ma fin du secondaire.

Parmi mes albums favoris. Vraiment du gros rock simple mais efficace.

A fantastic album showcasing this bunch of lads just as they were about to take on the world. It may not be at the same godly tier of (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, but it's still so banging that I'm giving it the supreme score.

Amazing

It’s about the attitude.

Un discazo, símbolo de su época.

Like their idols The Beatles before them, this is a perfect debut album.

My youth

LOVE LOVE LOVE

A solid five stars for this one. Not a perfect album but incredibly good, a bloody fantastic debut album, and listening to the layers and wall of noise that is Oasis is my happy place.

5/5 don't even need to listen

4.5 stars. Debut that start to finish a classic, full of great songs. It's the good version of Britpop is supposed to be: pop-y enough to be catchy but has enough edge on the guitars to keep it interesting. Noel's debut songwriting is impressive and Liam's singing is tailor-made for the music. Standouts are "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and "Live Forever".

Barnstorming. Not their best album but on the distribution of this list, still easily cleared the bar of 5. A great time!

Masterpiece, but (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? is better IMO

Can't help but love old british rock. Oasis albums are all five stars idc.

Great listening

A debut album with the band at arguably their peak. Raw, driven. Liam's vocals cut through with the perfect first track, rock n roll star it sets the stall for the ambition of a band, that at the time, became one of the biggest on the planet. Live forever was the breakthrough single and it holds up. Digsy's dinner could is like many of the countless b-sides that are just classic, simple songs but somehow capture the essence of Oasis

Has to be one of the best debut albums made.

Is it perfect? No. Is it even as good as the band claim it to be? No. But it's rock pop written and played with the passion and vigour of lads that knew they had one chance to be the biggest band in the world. And they took it.

Very fun to start, some huge Oasis hits mixed in with some new songs for me. Definitely has that defiant, british edge to it and some killer guitar pieces. Curious to see where the album goes to - debut album sounding like this is wild. By the time "Supersonic" has come off I'm floored this is a debut. This was tremendous, polished sound with an edge to it. Feeeeeelin SUpersonic

Brilliant

Mad fer it

I loveeee this album.

Amazing!!!!!

LOVE ITT

I'm shocked at how good this was i was not expecting it to be so stacked with bangers. Definitely the best of the 7(!!!!!) albums I've listened to today

Sensational

What a band, they may have ripped a lot of it off but the energy, attitude and production makes up for it. A couple of dud tunes but the hits? What hits they are. 5.0/5.0 Could (and have) listened to this all day Best Song: Colombia

It goes against, what we have said about 5-star albums needing to be wall-to-wall bangers, because, I don't think this is. The good songs are just so fucking good you don't really care about anything else. Best Song: Live Forever

was alr

Excellent album - a few id actually not listened to before

Beginning of brit pop legend

Jaja como vas a empezar una carrera asi

9.0/10 Classic.. love this

Classic 90’s. The second album is better

Album No. 0109 on my list. Funny enough, I revealed this album while traveling to Manchester. Anyway, there’s no easy way for me to write about “Definitely Maybe” in a neutral way, considering it’s been part of my all-time top ten for a long time. But it’s really just a great album. A great collection of songs. Lots of variety, still a lot of consistency. Great sound, no BS. Noel Gallagher really was an incredible songwriter during that period, and while I think its successor “(What’s The Story) Morning Glory” has even better songs, Liam’s energy on this is better and the whole album is more straightforward. This was a really proper antithesis to the fading grunge genre, and I’ll add six songs to my playlist: “Rock ‘N’ Roll Star”, “Live Forever”, “Up In The Sky”, “Supersonic”, “Cigarettes and Alcohol”, and “Slide Away”, but I might as well have added the whole album. Very good stuff, very cool lads, very good music for aspiring rock ‘n’ roll stars. 5/5 stars!

Fucking fedt

even better live

Classic 90’s, great debut album

See my notebook for notes on each song, but this album was awesome! I loved the mix of new (back then) sound and older influences and references. The use of metaphor had a clear through-line across the album, and you could definitely see the influence of addiction on the music. Even the seemingly happy songs were tinged with some jaded sadness, making for a complex listen.

PEAAAAK

Absolutely loved this album

shut up Ronan

Get it right up ye our kid

Voice: 10/10 Instruments a bit boring Good genre

One of my absolute favourites

Just an absolute classic and not really sure what else to say tbh. Easy 5*

Giving Definitely Maybe anything other than full marks would feel like a criminal offence where I’m from. I’m from Manchester, I was in my 20s in the 90s, and this album is basically woven into the brickwork. It landed like a statement of intent, loud, arrogant, and absolutely convinced of its own greatness. From the first blast of “Rock ’n’ Roll Star” it sounds like a band who already believe they’ve won, even if the rest of the world hasn’t quite caught up yet. What still works so well is the sheer confidence of it all. The songs are simple but massive, built on big hooks, big choruses, and that wall-of-sound guitar blur that somehow feels both sloppy and perfectly judged. “Live Forever,” “Supersonic,” and “Cigarettes & Alcohol” are not subtle songs, but they are timeless ones. There’s a sense of possibility running through the whole record, like everything is about to kick off and nothing can stop it. It captured a very specific moment, but it also transcended it. Of course it’s flawed. It’s noisy, it’s excessive, and it absolutely does not know when to rein itself in. But that is the point. Definitely Maybe is youth, swagger, and belief bottled at exactly the right moment. For anyone who was there, especially in Manchester, it is impossible to separate the music from the time, the place, and the feeling of it all. Five out of five, not just because it’s great, but because not giving it that would be asking for trouble.

Greatest debut album of all time!!

Hard not to gush over this album, despite its inherent flaws of shit production, mediocre derivative music, and pretty average lyrics, because it captures a mood. I was 16 when this came out. Too young to appreciate the Stone Roses when they appeared some 5 or so years earlier, too young for the whole baggy scene, and UK music world seemed dominated by electronic dancey music, so having a guitar band that genuinely spoke to me was a life changer. But it took me a while to get into them, the early singles didn't register on my radar but hearing "Live Forever" was a revelation, instant fan time. It would be stupid not to give a pivotal, foundational moment in my musical education a solid 5.

"Definitely Maybe" is, quite simply, one of the finest debut albums in rock 'n' roll history. There, I've said it! This may be a challenging statement for the critics who habitually sneer at Oasis as mere Beatles imitators, but the album’s enduring power speaks for itself. I bought this record upon its release 31 years ago, and its impact was immediate and explosive. Today, it remains just as loud and thrilling. From the opening, swaggering statement of intent, "Rock 'n' Roll Star", "Definitely Maybe" introduced the world to Oasis with an unapologetically brash and cocky roar. The album is a perfect storm of melodic song writing and raw energy. It’s packed with memorable, anthemic tunes that make you want to rock and groove in equal measure. Crucially, the spirit of the record is wonderfully optimistic and idealistic. Even if Noel Gallagher had stopped writing after this debut, tracks like "Live Forever" and "Slide Away" would have cemented his legacy. These are five-star-plus, stellar tunes. The guitar solo in "Live Forever" is a moment of pure, stunning melody. Equally breath-taking is "Slide Away," which stands out as the showcase for Liam Gallagher's vocal brilliance. In my opinion, this track contains his finest-ever vocal performance. Liam is, of course, a great and iconic frontman, but his true vocal identity and underrated abilities often get overlooked. He possesses a clear, instantly identifiable voice that is central to the album's sound. The album has that rare, magic ingredient of relatability that connects with listeners on a visceral level. If you've ever been in the crowd at one of their gigs, you'll understand. Oasis somehow manage to transform a huge venue, like Wembley Stadium, into an intimate space where every single song is sung back, word-for-word, by thousands. It's a phenomenon I'm glad I witnessed. While the album flows perfectly as a whole, the standout tracks truly define its excellence: "Rock 'n' Roll Star", "Live Forever", "Columbia", "Supersonic", "Bring It On Down", "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and "Slide Away". In short, "Definitely Maybe" is a fun, thrilling, wonderful record that remains one of the most exciting debuts ever recorded - well for me anyway. Five stars. "Biblical" to quote LG. 1 "Rock 'n' Roll Star" (5/5) 2 "Shakermaker" (5/5) 3 "Live Forever" (5/5) 4 "Up in the Sky" (5/5) 5 "Columbia" (5/5) 6 "Supersonic" (5/5) 7 "Bring It On Down" (5/5) 8 "Cigarettes & Alcohol" (5/5) 9 "Digsy's Dinner" (4/5) 10 "Slide Away" (5/5) 11 "Married with Children" (4/5) Total - 53 Average - 4.82 184/1001 100/184 albums reviewed were new to me.

SLIDE AWAY SLIDE AWAY SLIDE AWAY SLIDE AWAY SLIDE AWAY SLIDE AWAY

I was a little annoyed by this since I just got What’s the Story Morning Glory? To figure out how I felt about it, I listened to this album too. I determined that I prefer WTSMG even though it seems most people think Definitely Maybe is a more authentic sound. I actually felt kind of the opposite, that WTSMG is distinct if poppier, while Definitely Maybe is more like a Britpop type specimen. But… I like Britpop. I like this more than Pablo Honey. I find even the kinda dumb lyrics charming. “She done it with a doctor on a helicopter”? Sure, makes me smile. And the various kinds of hate Oasis gets makes me want them to give a boost because in spite of it all, I always enjoy hearing them. If we were using a different scale this might be a 4.5 or a B+ or I don’t know what, but tonight I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt.

That brings me back..

Brilliant album

Good god vibes, solid Oasis album. A good repertoire for a couple of pints in a rainy day

This is one of the all time classic albums ever, love it.

So, so much guitar. Some songs are pretty long at the ends, but I’m all in favor of not cutting something short. Really a “loud” album in a good way. Somewhat optimistic sounding 90s rock, or at least not as depressing as their US peers.

Rock 'n' Roll Star - 5/5 Shakermaker - 4/5 Live Forever - 5/5 Up in the Sky - 4/5 Columbia - 5/5 Supersonic - 5/5 Bring It On Down - 5/5 Cigarettes & Alcohol - 3/5 Digsy's Dinner - 5/5 Slide Away - 5/5 Married With Children - 3/5 Average score: 4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

O álbum que chega chutando portas e declarando, sem cerimônia, que o rock britânico ainda tinha sangue quente nos anos 90. Oasis mistura arrogância, melodias pegajosas e guitarras encorpadas para criar faixas que soam como hinos instantâneos.

Definitely not as strong as morning glory but I still really loved everything here. Plenty of smaller hits, songs you’ve heard in movies or tv shows, and great guitar work. Feeling a high four but might push it to 5.

The perfect Oasis record. It benefits from not housing "THE Oasis singles", but it does house an immaculate cut of hit singles and hidden gems.

SHIIIIIIIIIIIINE!!!

The last review was about The Bees and I said that that record had barely any cultural footprint. This one, on the contrary, has significant cultural footprint even if its launch was overshadowed by the death of a famous rock star. It's a perfect debut record by a good band. It has generational hymns, it has singles, it has bangers and back then it sounded unlike anything contemporary, even if it stole from myriad other bands. A perfect time and place coincidence, really. And I'm not even British.

This is an album that builds the framework of so so many people in this country. Like the sheer volume of people who base their tase back to this is a bit of a joke, but it’s so justified. I was a Morning Glory kid, but they’re both on the same pedestal really. I don’t even really think I have the words to describe why the music is so good, why it’s relatable or catchy or what it is that makes us all listen all the time, but there’s such a vast population of people who share that same feeling. Almost one of a kind I think. Anyways, fantastic album, no skips, a great listen.

fucking amazing, i love all of this album

They're so amateur, it's perfect. 5/5

another oasis album on the list. this right here is their debut. compared to their last album i listen to, this is more straightforward rock compared to their airy orchestral endeavors. i strangely like this album better than what i listened to before. it's a very spacious, super hazy... it feels like you're listening to the beatles or the beach boys at half speed. it's super cool, and i understand what people say now when they hold these guys in high regard.

Very Nostalgic for sure

Loved it. Multiple songs new to me went on my favorites list. Rock n Roll Star is a killer opener. I listened to this all day.

Champagne and coke turned into music through a Manc filter. Sounds better every time I come back to it (like champagne and coke it's not a good idea to do on repeat, daily). Much more fun to hear on hifi not surrounded by Oasis fans 4.7

Every Oasis album is great but this one is amazing

I can imagine each song blasting at 11 volume. They each have a loud as possible vibe. Enjoyed every song on the album. Love this band .

Perfection

The one that started it all, a revolution, Britpop launching into the stratosphere. 2025 the year of Oasis remembers the beginning.

I am definitely biased here because I flew all the way from Vancouver to London to see Oasis at Wembley night 1 of the reunion tour. Singing along to Live Forever with 80,000 people is one of those goosebump moments I will never forget.

i haven’t listened to this all the way through before but i grew up with oasis and a lot of these songs and they are just so fucking good. insanely impressive for their debut album to be one of their best. icons.

5+ Stars (15/15)

9/10 record

Definitely definitely

It's been almost 900 albums since I reviewed What's the Story, an album that I really love. I don't think I really discovered Oasis until I was in college in the mid aughts, and by then, the cat was out of the bag that the Gallagher brothers were assholes. However, between reviewing these two albums of theirs, I read John Harris's Britpop, and I learned that they're not run-of-the-mill assholes, they're mega-assholes. I still enjoy their music, but every time I hear a song of theirs, I just shake my head, and wonder how can anyone believe in God when talented people can also be such massive dicks. But I digress. I think I only know a couple of songs off of this album, and if I do know those songs, I don't know them terribly well. I'm expecting that I'll enjoy this album, but I don't expect it to come close to What's the Story. Alas, it appears my doubts in the existence of God have only deepened, because I really loved listening to yet another album from these twats. The guitar playing on this album was outstanding, and each song really brought something unique to the table in terms of sound, all while comprising a rollicking and cohesive album. The lyrics were great too, and I just enjoyed this album so much from start to finish. As for my prediction that this album wouldn’t come close to What’s the Story? I think this album is just as good, but I enjoyed this album for completely different reasons. Some notes on some individual songs: “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” was one of the two songs on this album that I wound up knowing, but hearing it as the leadoff track to this album was perfect. The guitar playing was excellent, as was the drumming, and I was completely bought into this album from the moment it started. “Live Forever” was the other song on this album that I knew, and it’s fantastic too. The lyrics were perfect for the pure guitar rock sound of Definitely Maybe, and the drumming on this song was great too. The bass line on “Up In The Sky” was really great, adding some nice depth to the sound. The lead guitar was great too. I really loved it later on in the song when the bass dropped out and then came back. It really emphasized how great that bass playing was. “Columbia” was sneakily one of the best songs on the album, just as good as “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” and “Live Forever.” The drumming was outstanding, giving this song the perfect punch. The guitar riff and guitar solo towards the end of the song were fantastic, and I really wished this song wouldn’t end. I I loved the energy on “Bring It On Down.” The drumming was fantastic, and I loved the vocal distortion that kicked in at the halfway point. The guitar intro on “Digsy's Diner” was excellent. I loved the way the drum rumbled, resembling an earthquake. The piano playing was perfect too. Definitely Maybe was another excellent entry from Oasis, and easily one of the top tier Britpop albums featured on this list. I’d listen to it again in a heartbeat, but it can’t make me forget that the Gallaghers are complete knobheads.

Lo amo

Loved this album!

Consistent and good.

Liam and Noel are both their own flavour of Bellend, but as much as it pains me, this is a masterpiece. The closest they ever got to being the Beatles (imo) and an album that changed the course of British music.

Liam Gallagher claims ownership of the words “sunshine” and “lasagna”. Noel Gallagher couldn’t have done a better job writing these songs. Shame they’re blue bastards. Perfect.

May have actually heard this one before

What a debut!

Great debut album from a great British band!

One of the greatest albums of the 90’s

A timely choice now that the Brothers Gallagher are back together. Anyone wanting to know what the fuss is all about should be starting with where the whole Oasis story started. If this album doesn’t move you, I feel sorry for your soul.

Lots of guitars and lots of good times

Oasis are twats but this album still holds up

Timeless. Perfect.

Banda em grande forma nesse álbum. Excelente obra! Roseselsa Quietsea II.

I love Oasis.

On the one hand, a document of its time - that time a band that sounded like Slade had been influenced by the Pistols suddenly burst onto programmes like The Word and demanded your attention. It's also a major offender in the Loudness Wars, as Oasis's output was recorded so compressed that it pinned your ears against the wall. But the songs. Oh, the songs. Cigarettes and Alcohol in particular. Cryptic lyrics, rock 'n' roll excess and noize, noize, noize.

When a first album sounds and feels like it's a band's 10th, you know you're in for something special. While I think Morning Glory is probably the better record, Definitely Maybe took over my entire brain with just about every song. The pure weight of the guitars and blends of instruments and sounds is just legendary, and there isn't much more I can say. Favorites were Live Forever, Supersonic, Cigarettes & Alcohol, and Slide Away

To weight in on the eternal debate: Blur is a far more consistent band, but they never reached the absolute heights that Oasis did here and on Morning Glory. It’s just sounds massive. Doesn’t have as many hits across the pond as it’s follow up, but this is every bit as good.

Really enjoyed this album

Check your pretensions at the door. A true 90s masterpiece and one of the best debuts ever, arguably better than the followup. Even the songs they left on the cutting room floor around this era are great.

Love it, great vibes all around. Great intro to rock for me

Classic

mega-album für einen erstling, auch wenn ich mich erst wieder reinhören musste.

Oasis have one excellent album, and one quite good album, and then they became pretentious twats. I found the third album a bit insipid and then I lost interest. This album however is excellent and was groundbreaking at the time. I dont think anyone who wasn't at a music discovering age in 1994 (I was 19) really realise how insanely impactful the band and this album was. The band literally saved a record company from going bankrupt (primarily due to Kevin Shields and his insane perfection for Loveless). a lot of notable songs and without a doubt a 5 star album.

One of the best debut albums.

Call it recency bias but I just saw them play in The USA for the first time in 17 years and it was excellent. This is coming from someone who has never really appreciated their secondary work short of the BIG songs, and while I do enjoy those of course there is more below the surface. The concert helped me appreciate them more, but this album took it to the next level. These songs are so much more raw and just as powerful and WTSMG. The rock licks are heavy and the tone is muddy but distinguished. Both Liam and Noel are in sync. I connected with this album much more than the totality of their next, which is a surprise considering the impact of the second album. I’m actually an Oasis fan now.

So surprised by that album honestly. The riffs are great, lip is actually a really interesting vocalist. His voice is raspy but also so unique. I always heard they were a cardboard copy of the beatles. But, being a huge beatles fan, i don't hear it outside of some influences here and there. in conclusion this album is awesome. My stand outs are definitely slide away, up in the sky and cigarettes and alcohol

Maybe not as good as the second album but it has great songs and reminds me of my college years when I was deep into britpop. 4.6 stars

If you were seeing Oasis live at this time, you were seeing the best band in the world - for the simple reason that they believed it. Fuck the snobs, this is still a bangin album. Its not big or clever but it doesnt have to be. Every song is an anthem and I still know all the words.

Let's get the joke out of the way first. I went to a fight and it was ruined by having an Oasis show break out. I kid I was never blessed enough to see Oasis live. I was 14 when this came out and was squarely in the prog metal and metal camp at that age. I had just found Undertow and listened to it so much the tape broke. I definitely remember Live Forever an Supersonic playing on the 'alternative' radio station in the town I grew up in. Next to Blur, in my opinion, for the greatest Brit Pop band out there.

Raw aggressive rock and roll, too loud, too many guitars - brilliant!! Hasn’t lost any of its impact 30 years plus since I first bought it on the week of release. Slide Away is maybe the best track? Even the acoustic coda has bite - “yer music’s shite, it keeps me up all night”! One of the all time great debut albums.

A rare record where nearly every song is strong enough to be a single. Catchy and often irreverent, the kind of boundless "eh don't worry about it" joy that has lead so many to believe that things aren't what they use to be. I think if released today this wouldn't stand a chance, but it came out at just the right time to wash away all the miserable american music and renew british peoples love of not thinking deeply about anything. The music itself is fine, songs are well written and produced, again most of them are catchy. I don't think theres a single dud here, infact the only songs I don't think are great are Columbia and Bring It On Down. Rock 'n' Roll Star is a great opener, super catchy and great progression throughout the song into the murky and hypnotic ending. Shakermaker is one of my favourite Oasis songs, stupid as fuck but catchy enough to find yourself enjoying it. Live Forever just a classic great song, not much else to say, first guitar solo I ever learned. Up in the Sky again just a great dancey rock song. Skip along to Supersonic, great mid tempo riffs into a really nice major chorus. Cigarettes & Alcohol is one of the more blatant rip offs being lifted straight from T Rex's Get It On. And yet I prefer this, I don't know if its the bleak Sex Pistols esque verses but theres something so uplifting and nihilistic about them, its such a funny juxtaposition but it works so well. Digsy's Dinner is just pure dumb fun, the drawn out way he sings lasagna is hilarious but I don't think anyone else could make it work. Slide Away another great mid tempo rock classic. Married with Children is a great closer, love the one take tape feel to this song, really gets the mood and the writing is top tier Oasis. I am loathe to say it but this is a great album, not quite a 10/10 but almost definitely a 9.5.

Another all time great album. And a great Britpop album to boot. Not Oasis's best, but far from their worst.

Plup might have written the best Britpop song of them all in Common People, but Oasis had a 1-2 all time killer combo in Definitely Maybe and What's The Story Morning Glory. 5 stars no skips from an xennial this album was made for.

One of my favorite albums of all time. On my desert island top 10 list of records. Songs that still find a way to my heart.

This is a great album. You can tell the time and effort into getting the sound out. Album is super busy, yet balanced and the sonic sound of the album likely sounds amazing with a high end sound system. Definitely want to listen on a high end system.

The best Oasis album and one that I loved at the time it came out. And still do. Live Forever is still up there as one of my favourite all time songs. But so many others on the album still have me hooked. Slide Away, Columbia, Bring It On Down etc. Another one of those rare albums where there isn’t really a track I would skip. Still as listenable today as it was back then.

I’m really trying to think of a reason not to give this a 5*. They are a pair of massive bellends. Musically, vocally and lyrically it’s not all that and the production isn’t fantastic. However, this album just has too much swagger to ignore. Amazing how far a bit of attitude and strong songwriting can get you. Still think Noel ‘learnt’ a lot being a roadie for The Real People. Listen to the guitars in ‘Wonderful’.

One of the best. No skips - can’t wait to see them

The first song on this album is quite generic. After the first song, the album gets better. The vocals are grating at times, however it does not take away from the music itself. This album is also strangely nostalgic

The songs are simple and catchy, it's an easy enjoyable listen, Noel's songwriting is excellent

Excited this one popped up. I love this album and Oasis in general. I’d consider it an essential album to the 90s pop rock genre. It’s interesting reading the history of the album, how much work went into it, and how it almost didn’t make it. Also curious to hear what the original tracks sounded like compared to the final album.

One of the better debut albums in rock history. It's hard to get a better rock n roll song than SuperSonic. I enjoy albums that are guitar driven and Oasis is all that.

i have no idea why but oasis has always been one of those bands that i just absolutely love no matter what they do. maybe combining loud, kickass instrumentals with really pretty beatles-esque melodies is a better combination than i'd think. and yeah, there are obvious flaws - "live forever" is a weird hybrid of "wonderwall" and candlebox's "far behind" and has 3 identical verses, "cigarettes & alcohol" is a very obvious ripoff of "bang a gong" by t. rex - but my two braincells seem to love this all the same. favorite song: slide away (absolutely gorgeous) overall: 10/10

Great album with some great iconic songs!

From the first chord, I'm a twentysomething again.

I quite liked this. It is the conic Brit-pop sound. A really solid debut album.

Hell yeah. Britpop with some rock n roll balls

It’s a classic innit

Very solid music

They’re quite good, these Oasis fellas. I think I actually prefer this more rocky sound to their later stuff which you tend to hear more often. They’ll always be a poor man’s Beatles, but better than being a rich man’s anything else

Superb! Their best album. Simpsons: Don’t think so

Easy 5

Damn this kinda ruled
