Album Summary

They Were Wrong, So We Drowned is the second album by noise rock band Liars, released in 2004. The album is considered a massive departure from the post-punk-inspired style of their debut They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top, exploring a more freeform, tribal sound. The album takes the form of a very loose concept album concerning witchcraft upon The Brocken (a mountain) during Walpurgis Night, and tales of witch trials in the area around the Harz Mountains in Germany. The recording coincided with the band's relocation from Williamsburg, Brooklyn to the woods of rural New Jersey, which also inspired the initial direction of the album. The focus upon the Brocken legends came when one of the band members mistakenly entered "Brocken Witch" into a search engine while researching the first song's title (called "Broken Witch" at the time). A screenshot of the music video for "We Fenced Other Gardens with the Bones of Our Own" resulted on the band's eponymous creepypasta. The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Oh boy. This was always intrigued me, because of how low rated this is. Along with the weird ass cover art, I'm excited. 01. Broken Witch Reminds me of the new Swans stuff. This is badass!!! Absolute banger! Such an awesome way to kick off the album. 02. Steam Rose From The Lifeless Cloak Pretty cool instrumental track. I wouldn't give it a heart, but I definitely wouldn't mind listening to it at all, either. 03. There's Always Room On The Broom That distortion is completely kick-ass. That hook is also SICK. 04. If You're A Wizard Then Why Do You Wear Glasses? Everywhere except Apple Music has improper grammar, with everywhere else having 'your' instead of 'you're'. Anyways, Quick and to the point. Really sick. Those drums are badass. 05. We Fenced Other Gardens With The Bones Of Our Own Really chant-like. Super cool. 06. They Don't Want Your Corn, They Want Your Kids Super weird, and super techno. Isn't my favorite, but definitely memorable. 07. Read The Book That Wrote Itself Feels like an intermission with how normal it is compared to the rest of the tracks so far. 08. Hold Hands And It Will Happen Anyway Got a nasty ass stank face when that guitar came in. Really fuckin' cool, the hook is badass. 09. They Took 14 For The Rest Of Our Lives The most "noisy" song so far. I love the minimal bass on this, and the lyrics are awesome!! 10. Flow My Tears The Spider Said Really sick first half, with a great atmospheric second half! This shit is fire. Absolute blast from beginning to end. It's not a perfect album, but damn it this is sick. It deserves the five.

Excellent

Interesting, and not as noisy as the genre suggested. Probably won't ever listen to them again though.

2004 Noise rock

I love this album and feel it is a perfect representation of a certain kind of noise rock from 00's that still stands up today. It has experimentation and noise while still being rhythmic and accessible to anyone that will open their minds and ears to something new and something made to push people's expectations.

Ouch! So bad I only made it through the first 3 songs!

this is sick. need to relisten more and maybe my rating will change - not sure how well the concept works to justify listening to noise rock (personally), but in theory i like it

Wont be returning

Well, here it is. My first experimental rock album. Technically I've heard Swans' "Soundtracks for the Blind," but technically I skipped through it after the first few tracks because I thought it was so abysmal. Anyways, this one I actually DID sit through. Mainly because it's not 2-and-a-half hours. But this isn't a review of "Soundtracks for the Blind." There are some really cool ideas and moments on this album. I love the glitchy drum loops in "Broken Witch" and "They Took 14 for the Rest of Our Lives." I love the plucky synth on "They Don't Want Your Corn, They Want Your Kids," and I like almost the entirety of "We Fenced Other Gardens With the Bones of Our Own." But these cool ideas are buried under a junkyard full of barbed wire and lithium batteries. A lot of this album sounds like either sticking my head in a particle accelerator or standing next to a jet engine. The vocals are fine, but I don't really like how monotonous they are. The lyrics I'm sure mean something, but I'm not smart enough to figure it out. Don't listen to this unless you already like experimental rock. Personally, I'll stick with my sunshine pop. ----- #0025 Heard on: 15 Oct. 2026 Rating: ★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ (338 / 345) Favorite track: We Fenced Other Gardens With the Bones of Our Own Least favorite track: If You're a Wizard Then Why Do You Wear Glasses?

Well, this definitely wasn't in the "music I like" category, but it did turn out to be "music I'll listen to once and not gripe too much about," which greatly surprised me. Normally, I'd skip a track after hearing about 30 seconds of what this album sounds like. I'm not exactly sure what held my attention for the whole album. Mostly unlikeable, but interesting in a sort of "modern art" kind of way ⭐⭐.49

lol this was a fun album, i really liked it. perfect for spooky month too with all the witchy themes 🧹 glad to have finally gotten a noisy album on this list, as someone who likes that kinda stuff. i think one of my favorite parts was that super messed up noisy riff on the 3rd track i think? awesome. i also liked the atmospheric parts too, they felt really cozy.

First listen

The first song not really my favorite The second is just noise,no lyrics Fifth song was okay And the rest... I'm into "sound pollution" type of songs, chaotic and such, but I'm not feeling this album

Below the rating box there is always the option to select DID NOT LISTEN. In the case of this album this is bloody good advice. 1/5 12/10/26

Not very easy on the ear. Hard to listen too

I've been revisiting a lot of early 00s NYC rock bands lately, so if this came up again at random, I might be less open to it. The movement's raw energy is gripping, and a noisy, confrontational art-rock trio fits right in. However, this wasn't my favorite listen. "They Don't Want Your Corn…" reminded me how much more I enjoyed them on their previous album, "They Threw Us All In a Trench and Stuck a Monument On Top", which is still noisy and confrontational, but also dares you not to dance. That album ends with a 30-minute descent into tone, but the tone is rhythmic, so it still captivates. Without a danceable rhythm section, I mostly got exhausted by the end of "They Were Wrong, So We Drowned." Four stars for "They Threw Us All in a Trench…" though; check that one out.

Like I see how this could be hip but it’s just noise

1 - TERRIBLE

What if you crossed Radiohead with LCD Soundsystem, but took away most of their talent and made them boring? You get this. No one can convince me that this belongs on the 1001 albums list. I'd probably give it a 1.5, but in this case I'm rounding down.

Husket den som bedre.

some of these songs are genuinely very interesting and fun to listen to but its mostly just pretentious and annoying

mer intressant än mycket andra tråkiga album på denna lista

Svårlyssnat på ett faktiskt inte så angenämt sätt

Tråkigt, dåligt ljud, kanske lite coolt men jag vet inte. Kommer knappt ihåg något av låtarna

Bara konstigt

This music made me feel genuinely unsafe! Blasting the first two tracks on a good speaker really made my home feel like an alien, terrifying place, that's a great accomplishment. If you can actually unsettle me you must be doing something right, 4 stars!

Look, I get what we're trying to do here, but it is very much Not for Me, Thanks.

I liked the style and the uniqueness. Started strong, but it never branched off from there and seemed a bit one note. probably a 3.5

I realized I was listening to something unique and became excited. Alas, this went away as the novelty faded. I’ll not return to this one.

Don't do drugs, kids

Overall: 7/10 Infinitely more interesting than more than half of the albums in this list. I wouldn't say it's something I plan on coming back to often, but there's a lot to like here. If you don't want to challenge yourself with new types of music then why are you even here??? Fav Song: There's Always Room on the Broom

Garbage…

So I heard the noise part and waited for the rock part. It never came.

Trop stylé

Okay this was bad. I’m normally the electronic soundscape defender, but this is awful. Noise rock bullshit over pretentious lyrics, slipping out of the ear as soon as listening to; just dreadful. A waste of my time and a waste of perfectly good notes.

I thought I was really going to like this when I showed up. I didn’t. Wannabe animal collective but not really as talented and more chaotic

Weird, but I’m not mad about it!

What is this supposed to be? This isn't music; at best, it's just a string of notes. Noise rock. I live near the Brocken—the mountain of the Germans. That’s where the legends and myths of witches come from. But we don't have nonsense like this here. Usually, Walpurgis Night features medieval sounds—sometimes wild, with drums and bagpipes. But never such slapstick! Only Americans could come up with something like that. Stuff like this doesn't belong on this list. Scum.

Big miss from the author. I am actively dumber after this album.

Just bad. This the kinda album people feel smarter or more cultured than everyone for pretending to like.

I dug the first and last tracks, but beyond that it was rather noisy and repetitive, even for someone who listens to a lot of noisy and repetitive music. Dig that they used themes of Walpurgisnacht!

It's not unlistenable, but it is a lot of nonsense. I appreciate this project in opening up pathways to a lot of different kinds of music. But how this made it on my list before a John Coltrane album even shows up is unconscionable.

A good noise rock album. It won't ever be my favorite album by a long shot but there are some groovy tunes and some others that are funny. So I'd rather listen to such a release than to yet another nu metal album. 3.5 rating up Favorite Songs: There's Always Room on the Broom ; We Fenced Other Gardens With the Bones or Our Own ; They Don't Want Your Corn - They Want Your Kids ; Hold Hands and It Will Happen Anyway

Starts great with Broken Witch and I like a lot of their ideas, but the album loses steam and I lose interest as or goes on

Abrasive, kind of annoying. First track grew on me, I guess?

It’s not that this material is too challenging, it’s that it’s too boring and wayyyy too non-consequential — both in its substance and in its greater place (or lack thereof) in a “you need to listen to this album” zeitgeist. You do not need to listen to this album at all, and I am now stuck between giving this thing a respectful 2/5 on the principle of how unique-sounding it is, and booming it to the moon with a 1/5 for being such an odd, dull, unimportant pick to add to this list. The last song was really redeeming. Softer and much more fun than the rest of the album. 2/5 the horrors persist but so do I

Art house experimental noise that is always seeking a melody that is often never found.

I have their previous and following album. I like those both. This is fine, of its time. Plenty of other albums I would have picked instead of it but deserves a higher score. 3.5 rounded up Heard before? Some Owned: No, 108/424 (25%) Will I get:

Frankly, in 2026, I have all of the anxiety I can handle from computer-engineers and their machines; don’t need it coming in my ear holes as well.

Just noise

Very infrequently, there is a rhythm or a section I liked but it’s really just 40 minutes of noise.

I could probably read articles on why this album matters and why it is great but I found it to be mostly just noise and don't care enough to see what I missed.

Reminds me I need to do my washing. Wish I liked this more, don't intend to rag on the more obscure albums on this list. WFOGWTBOOO is pretty nice. Other than that, unfortunately, barely music. Just interesting sounds. 2/10

Nope this one just felt like more clanging

Hier kann ich wieder nur mit dem Kopf schütteln.

Do you think they rehearse and plan the songs out so they play them the same each time? Is it all a bit improvisational or are all of the parts and moments considered and selected choices? I reckon I could get behind them a bit in a live setting, as the ultimate boho hipster music and art concept mixture. Is it a song? Is it performance art? I don't know but I'm sure they have interesting visuals to compliment all the banging on garbage bins and randomly shouting. On an album I do expect things to be a little more legible though. I'm trying to listen at work, on the treadmill, in my car driving to soccer practice. Are all the atonal squawks, microphone feedback and imperfect vocals what they wanted or is it a result of bad musicians without any ability to play coherent music hiding behind 'art' as a label to avoid being criticized for not having any talent? Extreme, abrasive, experimental or otherwise challenging music can still be coherent and deliberate. It can still demonstrate thought and care and an ability to create a certain listening experience through talent and musical ability. I don't think an album really works if the desired experience is deliberately caustic sounds created as a result of completely avoiding melody and structure. It's kinda poo.

I think if I had discovered this when I was younger and was doing a lot more drugs, I would have this as 4 or even 5. Couple of the songs are great and the rest doesn't bother me as much at it would most people, but still I have a long long line of noise rock that I can dive into instead of this. Still cool to be introduced to.

This was definitely a difficult listen, and my better half outright hated it, but it was not all bad, it was strangely compelling, too.

This is different. I will give it that. I am not sure that it is good. I am not sure what I thought the Liars sounded like, but somehow this is not it. This is noise rock and it didn't influence anyone that I am aware of nor did it sell a lot of records. It's in here because it's in here. That seems to be the reasoning. I generally dislike quoting music magazines, but at what point does honest experimentation turn into contempt for your audience? It feels like this is that point where the Liars contempt for their audience is obvious. The birds singing on the final track was the final nail in the coffin for me, as I understand the band has contempt for the audience and want to see what all they can get away with recording. I am always open to new albums, but man, this one was deadly difficult to get into.

Broken witch - 3 Steam rose from the lifeless cloak - 1 There's always room on the broom - 3 If you're a wizard then why do you wear glasses? - 2 We fenced other gardens with the bones of our own - 2 They don't want your corn, they want your kids - 3 Read the book that wrote itself - 2 Hold hands and it will happen anyway - 2 They took 14 for the rest of our lives - 2 Flow my tears, the spider said - 3

Album 320. They Were Wrong, So We Drowned — Liars (2004) The album surprised me and the Spotify recommendations after the album as well. I like this industrial noise rock. Ironically, it has 6th lowest rating on the list. Classic situation. Better than Taylor Swift btw 4/5 Liked: — Steam Rose from the Lifeless Cloak — We Fenced Other Gardens With the Bones of Our Own — They Took 14 for the Rest of Our Lives

этот нойз я не оценила, спасибо

Started off despising this one, but by the end I got extremely into its groove. Shocked at how much this worked for me once I got into a flow state.

There want much here to get my interest.

This is trash.

Heard before?:❌️ Will listen again?:❌️

Sounds quite interesting but just not for me. I could see some of these songs being very good in a movie

What went on in their heads to make them have the audacity to publish this.

Awful waste of time.

I didn't hate it but I am also far from loving it. I liked one song and was, at most, indifferent to the rest

Not sure if it's my kind of thing but interesting nonetheless.

Well this was an odd one. I looked over the lyrics after listening to see whether the odd witchey poetry was as cool as it sounded during the listen, and I found it mostly uninspiring. However, I liked the spooky vibes and like what they're doing it. It sounds like some of the darker shoegaze bands I like, just less rock and more ambience. I can see how this inspired some of my favorite artists. 3

The reviews of this thing would lead me to believe that you're either supposed to hate it (1 star) or be obsessed with it (5 stars), but I kind of just accepted it. It was definitely more concept and high art than a lot of things on this list, and I'm not always sure it lived up to its own expectations. But I didn't walk out of this thing hating it.

Every now and then it hits you with a really nice groove, though it makes you work really hard for these occasional nuggets.

I can kinda see what they were going for, but this just isn't enjoyable to listen to. Sounds more like a thought exercise than entertaining music.

this was a weird slow one, not bad tho

Spesielt

Terrible. How does this make any sort of sense”top” list

Ritual witch chanting groove music.

i am not sure if this counts as music but it does not deserve 1/5 somehow.

I don't get this album.. For me is a mediocre album 1/5

I was wondering when I'd get this album. "Broken Witch", the first track, is the best on "TWWSWD". The rest are just weird tunes. You wouldn't think Liars were post-rockers, based on "TWWSWD" alone. I like this album more than some people do, for some reason. 3 stars for "They Were Wrong, So We Drowned".

i don't know if i already had the headache before starting the album but by the third song it was impossible to ignore

This is fucking weird.

That is an assortment of sounds.

We were right. Drown them anyway. Shit sandwich.

It’s cool to listen to early albums from a band you’re otherwise pretty positive on and go wow, this sucks, they didn’t have it even a little bit. Anyway listen to Mess or WIXIW over whatever they’re doing here.

I’m sure there’s something there for other people to get, but it did feel to me a bit too much to me like New York indie types trying that bit too hard to be “interesting” (in the weird odd way) as a priority. It’s not a complete wash musically, building off the post-punk bones of other artists, but it does feel like every time they have something and they just have to turn it away from being “too easy” or whatever, because the audience can’t be comfortable or some such stuff. At least now there’s new Halloween music I can deeply for the witches I guess.

Honestly thought this was going to be an all-time stinker until I got to They Don’t Want Your Corn, They Want Your Kids which surprisingly has Temporary Secretary vibes with the thin instrumentation and the bass and sequencer in the background… … then the rest of the album happened and it’s safe to say I won’t be going back to this one

was intrigued by the witch song then it was bad and not my vibe at all

I liked elements of this, some of the songs have good grooves and go in interesting directions. But overall it's a bit incoherent - don't see myself listening to it again.

3.3 2x i need to give this another listen down the road. it's interesting

Too noisy for me. I couldn’t get into any kind of flow. I understand the it also wasn’t my bag. Always go into different albums either an open mind and have found some that I love on here. This one wasn’t it for me.

Enough has been said from other users.

Congratulations to those who love this and listen to it regularly… I will not be one of those

This was.... interesting. Not really good, but interesting. I've had nothing but shit from this challenge all week so I'll take it, I guess.
