Album Summary

A Hard Day's Night is the third studio album by the English rock band the Beatles, released on 10 July 1964 by Parlophone, with side one containing songs from the soundtrack to their film of the same name. The American version of the album was released two weeks earlier, on 26 June 1964 by United Artists Records, with a different track listing that included selections from George Martin's film score. In contrast to the Beatles' first two albums, all 13 tracks on A Hard Day's Night were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, showcasing the development of their songwriting partnership. The album includes the song "A Hard Day's Night", with its distinctive opening chord, and "Can't Buy Me Love", both transatlantic number-one singles for the band. Several of the songs feature George Harrison playing a Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar, a sound that was influential on the Byrds and other groups in the folk rock/jangle pop movement.

I was thinking this might this be a rare Beatles non-5? The earlier stuff i find a bit sappier. But it is still too good. The energy in the music is just so undeniable, and even the earlier stuff has decent variety.

Annoying

Mostly very good

Not my favorite beetles, but it's still the beetles

If there's a better pop album out there I don't think I've heard it

I didn’t expect this Beatles record to be in here, but I’m not mad. It’s hard for me to separate their albums, having consumed so much of their music at once. This isn’t my fave Beatles record, but does contain some of my fave Beatles tracks. Listening to this after The Who, and this record came a year after, mainly just highlights the discrepancy between the two. There is no Beatles album in existence that doesn’t have at least a modicum of magic, and this one is no different.

Probably my favorite Beatles album.

Even better than I imagined after looking at the track list - more a transition record for them than I remembered. There are some old-school bits, which are fine on their own terms but not "my" Beatles. But: Can't Buy Me Love? Things We Said Today? That's just A+. And a lot more of the record heads in that direction.

These are perfect songs--just imagine hearing them in 1964. The movie is a hoot too.

Didn’t like that much not my type of music, it’s just too simple and I don’t get the hype the vocals are annoying at times and I just don’t like it

Well it’s the Beatles. Prefer later stuff but you can’t ignore a great catalogue of songs in this album

This has never been among my favorite Beatles albums and listening again today, it was obvious that wouldn't change. The title track and Can't Buy Me Love are still great though.

Brings back memories

I LOVE THE BEATLES!!! And I love her is such a phenomenal song. This whole album is just banger after banger.

Not my favorite beatles album but still a meaningful listen.

Love to all the 1 star hipsters.

I have always been underwhelmed by the Beatles, but these songs are as close to perfect as it gets. No happy-feelgood-kitsch, no stuffy experimental overload, just one straight to the point 3-minute-pop-banger after the other.

Great from start to finish. Not quite as good as what they went on to do later but still a really good listen.

really very charming. i think if there was a beatles album to leave off the list it'd be this one. i'm sure there's a page long write-up about how this specific album fundamentally changed the course of all music, but listening to it it's only just nice and catchy. favorite song is Any Time At All. strong 3

you know it's remarkable to me that i haven't really listened to a lot of beatles lately. the last one i listened to was way back in january of 2025... and now we've got another one after all this time. this is their third album release, and after their first two poppy albums, this one is a bit more on the rock 'n roll side. this is also the first album to feature music entirely written by the members themselves. many of the tracks on the record would feature in the movie of the same name. a focal point of the album, which many music historians and reviewers talk about is george harrison's guitar playing, which influenced other bands with their own guitar-focused music. early beatles has a formula. it's an iconic formula, a trademark formula, but a formula nonetheless. riding drums, guitar-strummin and near-perfect harmonization and singing in unison from john and paul, singing about hand-holdin' and sweet sweet lovin'. there's really no denying that this is a generally quality album, as expected from these guys, but we really haven't reached that era yet where their most legendary songs were written and performed. it's great rock 'n roll though, more than enough tracks made for singing to yourself or wailing out at a karaoke bar. the cause for beatle-mania is pretty clear, and it's not just how cute these british boys were.

Epic and the beggining of Pop

Well it’s the Beatles isn’t it. Personally I find this album is just at the right point of pop genius before they became more experimental and good if different ways. Innocent yet knowing. Hook-laden, yet in places complex. Of course much is borrowed and improved upon, but that’s the nature of popular music. Has to be a 5/5 for me. Very enjoyable.

What's not to love? My favorite band, making my favorite music. Every song is catchy and pleasant. I grew up loving the movie and the music is icing on the cake. This is the best band in history. I know some may find it old fashioned compared to today's rock, but I still love it for it's innocence. We need more songs about love. This is a time capsule thats captures brilliance in a bottle.

I don’t think I’ve ever sat down and listened to The Beatles, but I see why they’re so popular. This was a very good album.

Owned for years. Here we go...well over 50 days in and here is my first Beatles album (i'm assuming there are at least 4 more ro come). I love The Beatles! Who doesn't!!? However i generally prefer later.....Rubber Soul onwards...Beatles to the moptop=Beatlemania era. But this is joyous. Obviously the title track is great. I have alwsys enjoyed If I Fell and And I Love Her. I'd forgotten the beauty of Things We Said Today and I'll Be Back. A lovely little piece of history!!

Banger. Lots of pop Melodies to hook the listener. Almost feel like this is quintessential Beatles. Felt like each song had the exact same pop energy whereas something like Abbey Road is more experimental almost. Great listen

#112 It's what you'd expect from an early Beatles album. Fun 60s pop, some classic songs from their catalog. Falls off a bit on side 2. Highlights: A Hard Day's Night, If I Fell, Can't Buy Me Love

Boring beatles

Leagues ahead of any band from the period. People who claim to dislike the Beatles are either contrarians or from another dimension.

First Beatles album listen. Pleasant

I like it but far from my favorite Beatles album. And for that reason I give it this score. Too hard not to compare to the other ones

I really liked this one. Not a single song that I would truly skip, but maybe I was in a good music mood. I can’t give it a five but this is definitely one of my favorites of the project. The Beatles have such a way with catchy hooks.

Might’ve read this higher at the beginning of the weekend, but I just didn’t think about it at all.

Like all of their pre rubber soul stuff this one ultimately falls flat for me as an album. Some real high points here, and it’s really crazy that they were like 22 years old writing these songs. But a Beatles pop album will never be very compelling to me

Not the best beatles album

IMPLACABLE

Brilliant !

10/01 It's the Beatles. I don't like The Beatles. Pass

You know I wasn’t sure about the Beatles but this is the third album in a row that I liked on here so I think I might be a fan???

Fairly enjoyed this given its early Beatles which I don’t really care for. It is a Beatles album after all though so it can’t be anything less than great. Standout tracks were A Hard Day’s Night (obviously) and my personal favourite Tell Me Why. Really can’t go wrong with The Beatles.

I understand that they where inventive at the time, but I have a hard time with the happy clappy tunes that are their signum. Only song i like is not on this album.

Beautiful album

An incredible achievement. All songs written by L&M, no filler, and captures the very best of early Beatlemania. Also notable for being a Lennon dominated album.

A really good Beatles Album (aren't they all though?). If any other band had released an album of this calibre I'd probably give them 4 stars but I will harshly mark The Beatles down for the simple fact that they have better albums. A little unfair I know. Favourites: I Should Have Known Better And I Love Her Can't Buy Me Love

I mean... it's The Beatles. Early Beatles at that. Solid work, stands well against the test of time and is a pretty great album overall. Not my favorite listening experience and some of the songs blend a bit too samey for me but there are some amazing tracks on this record that I love.

Gonna be hard to rate any Beatles album less than a 5. Just so catchy and consistent.

As a huge fan of the Beatles' later period, which I find their most interesting and complex, I tend to underrate their pre-Rubber Soul albums for being more naïve and straightforward. I was so wrong. This album is so much fun to listen to, and it's packed with amazing songs (not that I'm saying anything new here). It's a wave of joy that puts me in a good mood every time I listen to it.

Mi canciones favoritas: I Should Have Known Better y Any time at all.

5/5 I liked all the songs a LOT

A bit simplistic compared to what came later, but there are a handful of tracks that hint at future brilliance.

A pretty meh album. Definitely not worth listening to again, but not egregiously bad.

Tough follow-up act to Rubber Soul. There are still some good songs on here, but nothing that breaks out of the 60s saturation of british pop

A just fine Beatles album is still a pretty good album in comparison to a lot of the songs on this list. I would listen to it again, but it’s not the Beatles album I would actively choose if I could only listen to one of them. 4.5 stars rounding down

Very beatles!

I have a rule that if I sing along with every song on an album, it's an automatic five stars.

Listened before? Yes Thoughts: - Not one of my favourite Beatles albums, but it's definitely solid. - I don't know if I fully appreciated how pretty "And I Love Her" is before; what a great song. Favorite track(s): And I Love Her; Can't Buy Me Love

The beatles before they were really cool. But even this sort of jangle pop is tasty.

AMAZING AS ALWAYS

The first half felt a lot stronger, but solid overall.

Favourite Songs: Can't Tell Me Why

High 3, just below rubber sole. Really liked Things we said today, which I hadn't heard before.

A more focused album and big improvement on their previous. Strong 3

I remember being on a school trip to Paris as a 13 year old (not an unusual thing for kids growing up in the south of England) and listening to A Hard Day’s Night on my iPod Photo on the coach. On arrival I was singing Can’t Buy Me Love to myself to the absolute delight of what appeared to be an impossibly old Parisian who informed me it was a favourite of his when he was my age. It’s quite hard to get that kind of reaction out of the people of Paris, so I think that speaks to the immediate excitement generated by these early Beatles records. At 15 I had a girlfriend who was hyperfixated on The Beatles, but from memory she mainly talked about the early stuff, including watching the movies (this record soundtracked one of them). It wasn’t until I was 17 that I fully focused my energy on the later Beatles records, so that has formed my view of them and is perhaps why I find their output pre-Rubber Soul to be generally underrated by fans. Of course this is no where near The Beatles’ peak but controversially I think these 13 tracks totalling 30 minutes comes close to matching the more mature offerings of Sgt. Peppers and The White Album. The emotions across A Hard Day’s Night are always close to the surface and at maximum intensity. Here The Beatles find the simplest and most effective ways to profess love, longing, joy and heartbreak. It is their brightest and straightforwardly tuneful effort, and the robust foundation that the rest of their career is built on.

Hard Days Night is a low 4 for me, some wonderful tunes but some of it falls flat compared to their mid and late era for me

i feel like how i feel about all the beatles' stuff that ive ever heard which is like wow this is pretty good but like it's kind of hokey i wish i were listening to pavement

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. its crazy to hear how much their sound changed in a short period of time. I much prefer the later work, but this was great to listen to. I'd really like to see the film too

Really like this, some big tunes on here. Always surprised how much I like Beatles stuff cos in my head it's not really for me. It was interesting to hear this side by side with Sgt. Pepper and see how much the sound has changed over a relatively short period of time. Makes me want to read about the history of the band.

Excellent!!!

Not really a fan of this one, early Beatles just doesn’t really resonate with me like they’re later stuff

Mi disco favorito yendo a la pre

Doo doo butt 2/5

A couple songs are musically very fun (hard days night, can’t buy me love). Everything else is generic teenybopper shit, and two of them are John Lennon‘s ugly side. “You can’t do that“ is a warning to his girl that he will leave her if he sees her talking to another guy. Oy.

Nice short tracks from the band that are famously a four piece.

Tää on selvästi kyllä neljästä ekasta Beatles-levystä paras omissa papereissani. Viidentenä tulevan Helpin kanssa onkin sitten tiukempi kisa. Tässä on ihan ykköskorin biisejä Hard day's night, I should have known better, And I Love her, Can't buy me love ja Anytime at all. Sitten on vähän ehkä enemmän kakkos- ja kolmoskorin kamaa loppu. If I fell ehkä vähän kutittelee ykköskoria.

Most early beatles stuff rings the same to me. It's good, it's fun, but it pales in comparison to their later work. A hard day's night kind of hits those boxes perfectly. It's incredible to think what they'd accomplish 2 years later from this groundwork.

Classic.

The older I got the more I liked the Beatles.

Classic. Lennon/McCartney gold.

Good all around.

Fun album!

I guess we had to have ALL Beatles' albums...

Loved every minute of this 1964 classic. Sure - it doesn’t necessarily push the envelope, but the songs are catchy and fun. Long time ago folks, and at the time - there was nothing like this. I’m almost talking myself into a 5, but will leave it a very solid 4. Not sure how you don’t like this albums!

Me, a known Beatles skeptic, quite enjoyed this. This album stuck to what they are best at (pop rock) and while it missed the characteristic high highs and low lows (very low lows) of Revolver, it was far more focused and cohesive of an album. However, the Beatles are now banned from using the word love — I promise you there are synonyms. Someone on Reddit made a chart of how many “loves” is on each Beatles album, and this album is second only to Please, Please Me, which might Kill, Kill Me. Anyways, below is my Beatles Song Rankings System TM: Just Fine: If I Fell, Things We Said Today, I’ll Be Back Fine+ (Step and Snap Often Required): I Should Have Known Better, I’ll Cry Instead, When I Get Home I Can Get Down to This: A Hard Day’s Night, I’m Just Happy to Dance With You, And I Love Her, Tell Me Why, Can’t Buy Me Love, Any Time At All, You Can’t Do That Actual War Crimes: None! Look at you go Beatles, I knew you could do it. World’s Most Perfect Song: Also no, which is why this isn’t a 5 star rating. Album was fun, but nothing moved me as really special.

A below average Beatles album is still a pretty solid album.
