I am a fan of R&B and so far I am enjoying this album. The main thing that caught my attention is how each track starts and ends perfectly, like a perfect loop of a beautiful jingle. Reminds me of music being played in a cafe or bookstore: cozy atmospheric music that accompanies your thoughts while sipping tea or checking out books. Album cover art looks like from the 70's with it's blend of warm colors of green, red, yellow and Kubrick font. It explains why I was surprised to find out that it came out in 2000.
Memorable lyric: "Give me water. Water for my mind." "No, you won't be no name no buildings after me."
I am a fan of hiphop and I never heard A Tribe Called Quest before. The thing that I liked the most was it's beats and rhythms. It seems they mention themselves quite a lot as they do conversations in the middle of songs. There was also a lot of remixes of their tracks which shows that they are revered in the hip hop community. Will check out this band later on the road.
What to do say about this masterpiece? I was already familiar with Nirvana and I could say that I heard about 80% of the songs in the album before. I love rock so I am a bit biased but for me, Nevermind is one of the best rock (grunge) albums I ever heard. They are not an underground band so Nirvana has it's fame and fans and they deserve every praise they get. Even today, I see people in my generation still sport Nirvana merch so you can see how popular they still are after 30 years. My favorite songs are Lithium, Polly, Lounge Act and Something's in the Way.
I have heard of Prince's songs before but never heard more than say, 3. So I was pleasantly surprised with this album and how good the songs were. I like R&B so it wasn't a genre that I wasn't exposed to before. Little Red Corvette is one of my favorite songs of this album. Out of all the legendary music legends out there, Prince is the one I have the most work catching up to do. This is why I like doing this 1001 Album challenge, it gives me the chance to actually listen to legend's albums in their entirety and hear songs I had never heard before but fell in love with afterwards.
I have heard many great things about Frank Ocean such as he is the greatest song lyricist of this generation. I would have to agree as his songs carry many metaphors and double meanings that it makes you analyze each lyric. I love the fusion of the music genres such as R&B, funk, techno, psychedelic. My favorite songs were Sweet Life and Lost. I did enjoy the Earl the Sweatshirt collab since I like that artists music. Solid album.
I am a huge fan of the rock genre and I have heard of the Iron Maiden before. This album was packed with exhilarating tracks that it was over before I knew it. Easily replayable and never missing a beat, I have great thoughts about this album. This was the band's debut album which makes me curious about the other albums they have and whether they will appear in this 1001 list. Overall, I had a great time listening to it while reading Serial Experiments: Lain wiki.
I never heard of this band but their tracks were solid. It was a rock band so I could enjoy the genre more than I do others. I like more modern rock than this type but it was still really good. I hope to know more about the band Traffic since it seems like they have legendary status in the genre.
Out of the albums I have heard so far, this one was the one I least liked listening to. I didn't enjoy the rhythms, the lyrics or the beats and it overall just felt awkward and monotonous. I like synth-pop but this was not to my taste at all. There was some songs where it goes into a horrendous screech and the lyrics keep repeating with a dull voice. Would not recommend this album to anyone in my opinion.
This is a complicated album to rate. Kayne West has been a very controversial figure and has vociferously defend neo-nazism ideology. While I think we should separate the art from the artist and how this album had some good tracks, I can't support Kanye by giving him a high score. Which is why I am rating it as a 2.
I am a big fan of hip hop and I am constantly trying to immerse myself into the roots of the genre. This album from Public Enemy has good beats and I never felt bored but they lyrics felt outdated. I would have liked it more if I could understand the context in which it was written. So this made it into an average listening experience.
I like alternative rock and this album was no different. There was 2 tracks I really liked, Nature Boy and The Bells Well Ring. I never heard of Nick Cave but his tracks are what I like: rock music, upbeat and entertaining. I am a fan of this album and I enjoyed it. I would want to know what was the inspiration for calling it The Lyre of Orpheus since I am into mythology.
I have a good experience listening to this album. It was a different tone compared to the other albums I have listened to so far. I liked the rhythms, the lyrics were symbolic of England's industrial past and involvement in wars and it was short and sweet to the point. I can see myself replaying certain tracks and listening to the album as a whole. It was nice to hear music from another country as it exposes me to different genres and artists. It is interesting to note how acclaimed this album is compared to the average rating it received on this site.
Another 80's hiphop album, I am getting more accustomed to listening to albums of this genre. I read that this was their most critically acclaimed album and their most famous song "Me, Myself and I" was one of it's tracks. I enjoyed listening to it but it isn't one of my favorite hip hop albums. I like more 90s to modern hiphop but it was still interesting how hiphop has evolved throughout the years. As a sidenote, this album reminded me of Insane Clown Posse as its formatted as a game show in the beginning and end of the album. I found that pretty interesting.
I don't understand the hate this album received in it's ratings. Compared to the last albums I have heard, this was better than most of them by far. I saw many 1 star reviews and I was just doubting if my tastes are that bad. I guess I am biased as I like this type of pop and rock music. I didn't get tired or started watching the clock to wait for the album to end. It was pretty solid and it actually sounds as if it was released yesterday indicating how stagnant this music genre is. Anyways, I had a good time listening to this. I never heard of this artist before but their voice are pretty undistinguished from other artists in the genre.
I had a blast listening to this. I was already familiar with Blur and have listened to some of their famous tracks. I really enjoyed listening to a full set of tracks from them. It's my kind of music and I can see myself replaying certain tracks for a while. This was my favorite album for this week.
I am a huge jazz lover and I have listened to Duke Ellington before. This was the perfect album to start autumn as I always see jazz as the perfect music for this seasonal change as it brings comforting feels and reflection. I see myself listening to this music while studying or reading.
I love reggae so it was no surprise to me that I enjoyed this album. I also did research and found that Peter Tosh was once in the same reggae band as Bob Marley which was called The Wailers. Reggae for me is a one of a kind music genre and its always had good rhythms and never bored me. It is interesting to see how this album was mostly an appeal for the legalization of weed during the 70s which would have been seen as controversial back then. But now its mostly acceptable in Western culture and legalization of weed is now an increasingly popular position in politics and social norms. Anyways this album was great and it allowed me to enjoy its vibe and study at the same time.
Fallout memes aside, this album has some charm that the last few had. I have already had past encounters with the track "Big Iron" but I was pleasantly surprised by the other tracks. I researched a bit about this album and it was hugely successful in the 50s. I think this goes hand-in-hand on the popularity of spaghetti Western film and media. I am a Fallout fan so old music like this is one of my favorites and I could always see myself replaying Big Iron when patrolling the Mojave.
I have always been a Kendrick Lamar fan even before the Drake-Kendrick beef last year. This album is simply genre-breaking and I never hear any tracks like it in any place. Kendrick definitely is on a league on his own with his beats, lyrics, symbolism and craftsmanship. I am a monthly listener of Kendrick so I always seem myself revisiting and anticipating his past and future songs and albums. There is a reason why he has won the Pulitzer prize as his songs carry so much meaning that you can literally examine it as an assignment. 5/5
This is one of the few times that I had no idea who the artist is or what genre this belonged to but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked it's ambiance and it's just an album you can chill whenever. I am a big of Duster and I would be remiss to not notice how these artists share the same mood and beats in their music. I always enjoy this type of music so I am glad I am getting exposed to more artists of this music genre. I hope they keep appearing in this 1001 album collection.
I never really listened to Bob Dylan but I had a fine time listening to this album. The only complaint I had was it felt repetitive and I got bored at listening to the 16 minute song. There was like 2 tracks that I did enjoy so I raised my rating on that. Bob Dylan is considered to be one of the greatest songwriters in the American music scene but I never really was into his music. Maybe if I experiment with his other albums, I could start to appreciate his music more.
I never heard of Bill Callan but I didnt have a bad time listening to this album. I am not a country music person per se but I found it comforting. However, I would not see myself replaying this album as it does not pertain to my taste or vibe.
This album was tolerable, I just got bored after midway listening. It didnt' capture my attention like other past albums have. I am a fan of rock but this album unfortunately fell short of my tastes and I didn't enjoy it compared to other rock albums in this list. But it wasn't bad per se, I just wish it was more upbeat and more captivating for me.
This album is the reason why I even got into this 1001 album a day challenge because it exposes me to different artists and genres. I absolutely adored this album and I found myself replaying certain tracks like "Spellbound", "Arabian Knights" and "Sin in my Heart" over and over again. I had no idea who Siouxsie and the banshees were before I listened to this but I am really glad that this challenge made me listen to them. Definitely one of the best albums I have heard so far.
I would say that for me this album was pretty mediocre. I only enjoyed one song off this album but the other songs were pretty forgettable for me. I am usually a fan of 80's music but I guess this album did not really interest me as much as others. It is just a down the middle album compared to the others I have reviewed so far. Nothing to write home about.
This album, I would say was harshly rated. It is no masterpiece like others in this list but it doesn't have to be, the whole point of this challenge is to expose ourselves to music we may or not have heard. I seen a lot of 2 star ratings on this album and I would say I am opposed to it. It is not my favorite at all but it had some decent tracks and it was less forgettable than the last album I reviewed. It's not my type of music but I had a decent time listening to it and I would never see myself calling this horrible to listen. There was some actual horrible albums in my opinion in this list but this is not even close to getting that label. So I am giving it a 3/5.
I am a fan of rock but I felt like I didn't really connect to this album. It was nice to hear bands from the 70s but I mostly felt bored and waiting for the album to end. I would say its tolerable but not really enjoyable. I just have to give it some credit for being one of the progenitors of punk and rock music.
Radiohead, a band I could listen to over and over again. I haven't heard this album before but I really did enjoy listening to it. Knives Out was my favorite track and I am glad that I got to experience that song. I never get tired of Radioheads music so this is an automatic 4 for me. It's not my favorite Radiohead album by far but it really was memorable and captivating.
I have heard of the Beastie Boys but never a full album by them. I was pretty surprised by how much I enjoyed their music since I didn't had any high expectations going into this album. There are great tracks in Ill Communication and never did I feel bored or uninterested in listening to it. I have replayed many after my initial listening session. I will definitely save this album for future listening. For the surprise and the enjoyment this album gave me, I will give it a 4.
I like how this list contains music from other countries and culutres so it just won't be US/UK music only. However, unfortunately I didn't really enjoy this album. I guess this genre wasn't for me because I was already getting tired of it by the middle of the album. Maybe I would have related to it more if I understood the lyrics. I am grateful that this album is giving me artists and other music for me to listen though.
It was a good album but I felt like I have heard better albums on this list. It did feel great as the last few albums I didn't like much and I am a rock genre enjoyer so I didn't feel at all surprised that I would like it. I never heard of the band Eels before but their tracks have many views which makes me want to visit their other albums and see if they are better than this one.
Well this was an album to listen to. I liked the ambience it gave off but most tracks were just rambling and disported beats. It definitely is unique that I can say for sure. No idea what the album was supposed to be about but I didn't hate it as the other reviewers on this website. Art is supposed to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comforted so I guess by going with that mantra, this album is pretty ok. I will give it a 3.
I am always a lover of blues and jazz and this album was no exception. I never heard of Fats Domino but I enjoyed his songs and I could enjoy jazz at anytime. It is pretty wholesome to see comments of the elderly praising this album as they heard it from their times and now the new generation can get a chance to listen to these oldies. I never had a bad experience with a jazz album, keep them coming.
This is a 5 for me, hands down. I may be biased towards the rock genre but wow did I have a great time listening to this. There are so many tracks for me to replay and enjoy that I am saving this album to my favorite playlist. I never heard of The Stone Roses so I was surprised to see the many views and likes their songs got. Now I understand the amount of praise they got. Thanks to this challenge for giving the chance to know this amazing band.
Not really a country music fan but I didn't dislike this album. I think the con I had was that I listened to a really great album before this one so it made this one look less stellar. However, it had some nice tracks that I would see myself listening to. Never heard of Ryan Adams before but he does have a voice that I didn't get tired to listening compared to other country artists.
The Beatles, well what can I say about them. It is a 5 for me, hands down. There were a few songs that I did not recognize from them but now I love them. Their songs are short, sweet and to the point. I can never see myself actually disliking listening to their songs. There is a reason why they are rated the number 1 band of all time.
I like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their song "Californication" is one of my favorite songs of all time. However, I didn't really feel connected to this album. It is not bad per se but I did feel it drag on and it just didn't have the same feel that I expected from them. This is an old album, maybe their music evolved as time went on. I am giving this a 2.
Phenomenal album. I thought that I never heard a song from Carole King as I never took notice of her name but I recognized many tracks in this album. Great vocals, amazing songs, I mean this album had everything that I wanted and didn't expect for it to be that good. Definitely going to be saving this album for future listening.
I don't even know what I listened to. I have heard of Bjork before but I never listened to a full album by her. I disliked listening to many tracks on this album, it just delved into weird rhythms and nonsensical lyrics. Comparing this to the last album that I reviewed is a such stark contrast which makes this album look way worse. I just couldn't find a single redeeming quality to this album. Going to have to give this a 1-star.
Well this was a breath of fresh air as the last album that I reviewed was one of the worst ones so far. Idlewild has pretty tracks in this album and I am a lover of soft rock. I thought I never heard of this band before but I recognize now some of their popular songs. It is one of those scenarios where you know the song but you can't for the life of you recall the band's name. Solid album. 4/5.
I like house music and I had a great time listening to this album. I never heard any of the songs or the band but I did not regret listening to them. I always felt that 90s house music is unparalleled compared to modern house music. I am not sure how to explain but it just feels that it has more soul and love put into it.
I recognized the voice of Chef from South Park and I was surprised because I didn't know they made soul music back in the 60s. I like soul but the only gripe I had with this album is that two of the songs were almost 20 minutes long and 90 percent of the songs was just literal talking before the actual music starts. Could have shortened and that would have made the album better. I will give this a 3 because I certainly felt like huge portions of this album could easily be cut out.
I like a few tracks but I was starting to get tired by the middle of the album. I feel like I have just been so used to modern rap that I am not accustomed to hearing 90s rap which is a whole different ballgame in terms of rhythms and lyrics and meaning. I disliked the album more than I liked so for that reason it is getting a 2 instead of a 3.
I am a big fan of electronic music so I am obviously biased to that extent. However, I was not all enthusiastic about this album because I felt bored of it in the beginning. It was only during the last two tracks that I really started to dig it's vibe and enjoyed it insurmountably. It is surprising for me because two tracks were very long, I believe at 12 minutes long and I am not a big fan of listening for more 10 minutes for a song. But due to it being a solid EDM track, I really did like it.
Jimi Hendrix's music is always extraordinary. I am a pretty avid fan of 60's rock so I thoroughly enjoyed this album. It was short and sweet to the point. I read up a lot on Jimi Hendrix and one of my favorite performances was when he performed the Star Spangled Banner in his own unique interpretation. This was when America was in the grips of the unpopular Vietnam War and a significant event in the tumultuous and riotous 60s.
I heard many of these tracks before and they are all bangers. So it wasn't that hard for me to just grade this a 4/5. When the songs are that good, you barely notice that 40 minutes are over. Thanks to this challenge I found out which band made those songs.
I am a big fan of classic rock and man was this album just a fun ride. Never a dull moment. Short and sweet to the point. The audio quality is pretty good and it made me feel as if I was in the audience as well. Solid rock album.
I wasn't going into this without much expectations. I judged the book by it's cover which I already know is bad but wow this blew me away. Great electronic beats, even if the song started out slow, I always had a fun time during the middle and ending sections. I never heard of this band before but it seems they were very popular in the 90s and helped to cultivate this variety of electronic music. Reminds me of The Matrix.
I am not really a big fan of Bob Dylan. I like some folk music but I never really felt a great attachment to Bob Dylan's work. There were a few tracks that I liked but mostly I would just hear them in the background while doing other stuff. I guess this genre of music is not for me because I didn't really felt such a strong connection.
I like jazz and since its early November, it was the perfect time to listen to the album. It helps me study and focus so it was pretty calming for me to have those long 12 minute tracks. Normally, I would be against listening songs for that long but since it's jazz I don't mind it that much.
Probably the best non English album I have listened to so far. It has great rhythms and I liked the upbeat atmosphere it provided. The language barrier definitely was a setback as I couldn't understand one song but that didn't make the album unlistenable. I will give it a 3
I mean what a voice. I know how famous Aretha Franklin is but I never listened to a full album by her. There were many great hits that I had to replay due to how good they were. She clearly has earned the title of Queen of Soul. The amount of views her songs have is a testament to her monumental legacy in the soul music world.
I don't really get the bad reviews. I really fw with this kind of music. I can put it on as background music for when I am studying or reading. I never heard any song that is similar to this which shows how unique it is.
One of the best rap albums I have reviewed off this list so far. Every song had his own thing going for it. It was also my type of rap with it's symbolic lyrics, great rhythms and type of voice. I am not a big aficionado of rap so I didn't even know who Common was before I listened to is. I am a big fan of his work now.
It was nice but I felt it to be too long
I am a big fan of Lynrd Skynyrd. I never found a band that was similar to them and I have heard the track "Free Bird" hundreds of times but I will never get tired of it. It was jam packed with tunes that I liked and the addition of "Free Bird" is what made me rate this 4/5.
I didn't really connect to it like the commentators did. I liked the ambience but I just wasn't my taste. It's mostly music to just concentrate to or study to. I will save it for those occasions.
It wasn't as bad as the other comments made it out to be. I haven't really listened to a lot of albums of Elvis Costello yet so that's why I don't find him that overrated. There were some tracks that were mediocre but the others were fine to listen to.
I think this album was fine. There were some good tracks but there were others that really dragged this album more than it should. I would have given this a 4 if they would have trimmed down the album. PJ Harvey's music is enjoyable as I did review a previous album made by her but this one did feel repetitive.
Not my favorite style of country but it wasn't all bad. I did feel that the beats were really repetitive so I got tired of it even if it was just a half an hour long.
Great album. It was definitely a different vibe from the other albums I have listened to. Its what makes this challenge worth doing because I had no idea who Nick Drake was or even about this album's existence.
It had good hits but there was that one famous track "Bang a Gong" is a classic. I rate it a 3 because it was only "Bang a Gong" that really was to my liking. The others were fine but I thought of them as unforgettable.
It was just calming ambience. Feel asleep to it multiple times.
Not my style. It got too repetitive. Bored me
Not my style of music but it wasn't that boring. The type of music I picture you listen to while playing bingo on a sunday night.
Pretty much meh for me. I felt like it was just boring.
I love Ella Fitzgerald but even I was struggling to get past the 3 hours of this album. It wasn't that the album was bad, not at all, but if they would have split this album into say 3 albums then I would have liked it more. Being that long does diminish the songs as you are just wanting it to be over. I am a huge fan of Ella's work and Autumn in New York is definitely top 10 most comforting songs.
5/5. Great tracks, I really enjoyed this album. I was vaguely aware of Sonic Youth but now this album got me to really appreciate the contributions they made to music.
