Dinosaur Jr. · 2 likes
5/5
In 1987, it's clear to see how this record was ahead of its time; eschewing the clean polished guitar tones of hair and glam metal bands, dinosaur jr pushed the limits of noise with distortion, grime and sludge. The resulting record is not just ahead of its time; it's the father of many musical genres, the prognosis of grunge, screamo, noise, hardcore, shoegaze. It's hard to understand how clearly these sounds shine through in tracks like Lose which could fit on a Nirvana album, or the opener little fury things which sounds picked off of a MBV record. Dinosaur Jr manages to clear every hurdle and land as a statue to underground, noise, and the influence of indie to this day
Public Enemy · 1 likes
4/5
Public enemy proves it is one of the heavy hitters of 90s hip-hop with a classic boom bap record that dares to use hip hop as a vehicle for conversations on a myriad of topics facing the community and country. The flows and prose are of a caliber few artists attempt nowadays and for that it deserves its laurels
PJ Harvey · 1 likes
4/5
Incredibly raw lyrics and aggression are palpable from this record. A masterclass in authentic songwriting
Turbonegro · 1 likes
4/5
Not ground breaking but perhaps the most fun I've had with a new record in a long time
Roxy Music · 1 likes
3/5
An alluring album cover beguiles a mediocre art rock record. The music is technically good but seems to lack real impact

The Replacements
4/5
It's clear to see how influential this album has become in light of the explosion of grunge and post-punk. The bands carefree attitude is starkly contrasted by their attention to greater social and personal issues or isolation. A fantastic underground record, 8/10
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
Californication is punctuated by poignant funk bass lines and guitar riffs, however after the title track, the album falls into a state of inconsistent and uninspired tracks, running out of steam from an otherwise amazing and fresh first half.
The Clash
4/5
Hard to believe this record is from the 70s! With a timeless punk sound that bends genres, lyrics and topics that are still relevant to today, and a relatively condensed runtime, The clash S/T is almost a perfect album, just missing the infectious ear worms and tighter song writing that can be found on other records like London's Calling
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
5/5
An incredibly innovative record blending folk and rock with psychedelia. This album is loaded with unexpected progressions and thought provoking lyrics which makes it an undeniable treasure
MGMT
4/5
Some of the greatest electronic hits of all time with forward thinking melody and synths. That said it's lacking some depth outside of the leading singles
The Rolling Stones
4/5
The album is bookmarked by two of the greatest Stones songs, but between the bread is plenty of interesting fillings to keep one satisfied and nourished. With eclectic mixes of blues, gospel, rock, and country recorded and brought to you by the U.K, this is a standout Stones record
Liz Phair
5/5
At first, Liz's monotonous delivery and sparse instrumentals suggest a snoozy record; however once the record picks up steam, this facade soon fades. Beneath the droll tone, Liz provides energetic, clever, and direct lyrics with wonderful backing that makes the overall record incredibly enjoyable. The influence is incredibly visible on indie even 30 plus years later
Keith Jarrett
4/5
An amazing jazz piano album with wonderful improvisation and a surreal mythos.
Frank Sinatra
5/5
Filled to the brim with Sinatra classics this is an absolute classic. Of course the composition and arrangement is simple compared to modern standards, but there is a timeless charm here that makes the album worth revisiting over and over
The Who
3/5
Some standout tracks that break the mold and serve as stupendous arena rock anthems, but outside of the bookend tracks the remainder of the track list lacks the same substance and sounds cliched by comparison
Neil Young
3/5
Great set of folk country tracks, with every track containing a poignant commentary on some aspects of the state of Young's life at the time. That said while quite enjoyable, there is not much in the way of standout tracks or tight cohesion that would elevate this record, making it enjoyable but not an exceptional listen to those not absorbed in Young's self mythology
Fleet Foxes
5/5
I am certainly biased; living in Seattle the past 4 years, this record snapshots the cultural forces present in the area in a way no other collection of music ever has.
Beyond it's bold, unique chamber and choral elements, devastating lyrics, and gorgeous guitar tones, this record speaks to something greater; it's sparse instrumentation and reverberant vocals conjures a feeling of isolation that resonates in the region and time it was recorded and echoes into modern life. This record is truly a modern classic, perhaps the greatest indie record of the 2000s
The Auteurs
2/5
While the significance to brit pop is worth lauding, this record seems more derivative of other famous acts like the Smiths than it is confident in its own sound. And in that, this record commits a grave sin; it is boring. Banal, inoffensive, and with little standing out, New Wave manages to do something few other records on this list does, and that is to bore me to tears
Finley Quaye
4/5
A fun and unique album, fusing reggae, jazz, and funk. While the tracklist does lag towards the end, this album remains an enjoyable and exciting adventure
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
A masterclass in soul and funk, this album has a jubilant energy that is infectious. Wails, screeches, and screams pan in the mix over grooving bass lines, and jam tracks manage to sustain the groove. Different strokes maybe for different folks, but everyone can find something to love on this record!
Van Halen
4/5
Full of energy and charisma, Van Halen's debut album contains to rock! Variations on the blues, metal, and rock and roll collide to give birth to glam metal and influence an entire generation of artists. There is a lack of variety on the album but given it's relatively short runtime this isn't necessarily a bad thing. A very enjoyable listen packed with classics
The Flying Burrito Brothers
5/5
Besides the attention grabbing moniker, the flying burrito brothers manages to pull the listener into a captivating world where country ballads are interrupted by guitar solos and banging keys. The Prometheus of country rock and full of catchy tunes, counter culture, and memorable tales. Everything one could want from a country album and more!
Dirty Projectors
3/5
A wonderful foray into avant garde art pop containing many interesting textures. I could mull over the soundscapes presented in this album forever; however at the end of the day this album seems so concerned over the landscapes it paints that it overlooks the impact on the listener, which in my opinion not resounding but muted in contrast to the colors this album tries to present
Buzzcocks
4/5
A perfectly serviceable foray into punk, bursting with energy making for a fun listen. It is a distinctive brand of instrumental aggression that is engaging but perhaps not enough to stand out from talented peers
Pixies
4/5
A indie rock classic, this record contains ear worm hits like where is my mind as well as deeper cuts. The albums influence is widespread, and discoverable in bands that follow like Nirvana and PJ Harvey. The Pixies at their best!
Boston
5/5
While the album is only 8 tracks, this record is arguably the greatest collection of singles ever put on wax. A landmark on rock and roll, shifting the genre towards arena rock and somehow perfecting it before the genre even had it's legs underneath it. Gorgeous guitar tones, reverberating organs, and layered vocals - Boston's self titled is a must listen!
Fishbone
3/5
While admirable that the band dares to try so many different sounds, from hard rock to ska to reggae to funk, the album's social message seems to get buried under the cartoonist impressions band members exude during the recording. It's high energy and has something to say but just doesn't feel focused enough
Black Sabbath
4/5
A stunning, heavy metal record with amazing vocal performance and insane guitar riffs. A surprising mixture of heavy metal with softer and deeper cuts like Changes. Ozzy will be missed, and his influence on Metal can't be overstated
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
3/5
Incredibly skillful blues, harmonica, and guitar playing on display, and the influence on rock is evident! Amazing and classic guitar tones that make this record great but I don't find much standout to revisit here
Billy Joel
4/5
The Stranger is a master class in pop rock, showcasing Joel's unique ability to write infectious and catchy songs with storied subjects and really engage the listener to care about each and every person we meet on this record. Truly an amazing album deserving of every accolade it's received
Nick Drake
4/5
Drake's lyrics and instrumentation shine as always on this record, with a unique blend of introspection and magenta colored glasses through which he sees the world
Rocket From The Crypt
2/5
I cannot fathom how this record stands out amongst a sea of derivative alternative groups in the 90s. I suppose what sets it apart is the atrocious mixing between the vocals and guitar. One of the most unoriginal and uninspired records I've heard in my lifetime
The Jam
3/5
This album manages to be an enjoyable record with some funk elements that are intriguing, but it feels like it struggles to stand out or maintain a palpable identity
The Divine Comedy
4/5
Divine comedy manages to strike a chord of sardonic humor that resonates in ways other heartbreak albums just don't; the song writing is witty and vocal delivery manages to be varied and engaging. While a bit over produced, the tracklist is tight and cohesive making the album quite enjoyable
Cat Stevens
4/5
A wonderful and emotional record that contains stupendous hits like Father and Son and pleads to be bigger than it's parts, like acres of sky
Meat Loaf
3/5
Did not expect meatloaf to produce so many droll love songs on one record
Fats Domino
4/5
Fats Domino encapsulates the sound of rock and roll, soul and blues in the 50s in such a perfect manner it's hard to rate this record as anything other than great.
Rush
4/5
A seminal prog rock album with a standout opener, that said the second side falls off in consistency but does not mean the music is any less impressive, just not as cohesive thematically
Dinosaur Jr.
Dinosaur Jr manages to clear every hurdle and land as a statue to underground, noise, and the influence of indie to this day
The Mamas & The Papas
4/5
The Mama's and the Papa's deliver a timeless classic where vocal harmony shines front and center in this classic folk rock record, with multiple standout tracks. While the album lacks any particular standout or redefining feature it is an incredibly strong and consistent record
Public Enemy
Motörhead
4/5
With a number of catchy rock and roll anthems with a heap of trash metal, Motörhead manages to produce strong album of singles; however the sound does get repetitive after some time and some of the songs like "jailbait" are deserving of a scolding.
The Young Rascals
3/5
This record feels like an attempt at soul but it is missing all of the heart that should go there. No songs are bad, but none are elevated by vocal performances that stand out besides perhaps the title track.
Laibach
5/5
A record that satires the war machine and fascism of 20th century Europe should not be this catchy, but it is. Life is life!
Blur
3/5
Albans songwriting chops are on full display in this record, containing some fun and catchy britpop songs but the album does drag on a bit too long and too varied in focus
Jorge Ben Jor
4/5
This album is a lovely mix of funk, soul, and latin that I would have never discovered if not for this project. Wonderful sampa rock record that's sound and influence is heard today!
The Clash
5/5
An outstanding foray into rock, covering everything from rockabilly to punk and back. Few records have ever maintained the musicality and social commentary that this record does and for that it is a perfect record
The Incredible String Band
3/5
An experimental and bizarre album, with sections of crooning and whining strings that succeeds in creating an atmosphere that feels like a rip off of world music. While it is clear to see the influence of the album, that does not mean it is an enjoyable listen, but some tracks like Minotaurs Song do standout
Coldplay
4/5
Parachutes doesn't break the mold, but instead approaches near perfection for an enjoyable and easy listen; a smooth indie rock experience that continues to worm its way into charts from sound bites on tiktok. The melodramatic vocals and instrumentals give a greater gravity to this record than the simple pop rock atmosphere would indicate, and so it's easy to misconstrue the record as something grander than it is, but it does remain a light, enjoyable experience - the McDonald's of indie rock
Prince
5/5
In purple rain, Princes skill as an instrumentalist, composer, and producer is on full display. Undeniable talent combines with music that is catchy and socially aware, making the record an obvious standout even on such a list as this
Nirvana
5/5
When folks think of the greatest live albums of all time, the list is short - and Nirvana's unplugged is at the top. In one hour long live set, Nirvana vaulted to the zeitgeist of 90s, fueled by a punk aesthetic packaged in a lackadaisy grunge band. The genius of the record though is in the acoustic and slower pace which shows Nirvana's depth as a band. The playing is wonderful, and perhaps the best segments are the interactions of Kurt and the crowd. An all-star record, showcasing just how much impact Nirvana had on the world of music
The Cure
3/5
A dark, moody record that does some interesting things with the guitar work and noise; however while listening to the record one can't help but call comparisons to predecessors like Joy Division which simply sound like an elevated version of this record. It's serviceable, even enjoyable at times but doesn't stand out much otherwise
Doves
4/5
A surprisingly good brit indie record. Is it over produced? Yes. Is it overdramatic? Also yes. Is it overrated? Certainly not, deserving of an entry on this list.
The Cure
4/5
A gothic record that contains many gorgeous soundscapes. The plucked strings are enjoyable and hollow drums contribute to the spacy and dissonant feel of the record. A solid and enjoyable work, with standouts like the forest and in your house
Curtis Mayfield
5/5
Funky, full of social commentary, and ever so relevant. Super fly is a phenomenal soundtrack, arguably one of the greatest sound tracks of all time. Freddies dead, No Thing On Me, and Superfly are master classes in funk, making this record a landmark
Talking Heads
4/5
Talking heads debut record is surprisingly fresh and contains many good ideas with standout tracks like psycho killer. Overall a fun listen
Iron Butterfly
4/5
An amazing record that, despite containing a 17 minute track never feels stale or like it's overstayed it's welcome.
Chicago
3/5
Chicago is fine at mixing some larger instrumentation with impressive guitar work, but overall lacks standout and catchy songwriting chops on this record
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
3/5
This record is at its best when the group is providing unique perspectives on Folk songs and political events; however, covers of American gospel songs and attitudes are scattered throughout and while not a bad thing seem to distract from the otherwise profound nature of the record
David Bowie
4/5
Outside of the stand out title track, there is much to love on this record from the experimentation and gorgeous guitar work by Fripp.
Supergrass
2/5
Smells like another bland 90s britpop act with a slight nirvana flair. It's fine but doesn't do anything special to standout
Kanye West
1/5
A wonderful experimental hip-hop record - I have fond memories of listening to this in college before his breakdown on TLOP tour. Since then, this music has become unlistenable because it's impossible to separate the art from the artist here. Yeezus more so than any other record is the impetus of Kanye's slide into mental health crisis and listening or rating would only further enable, so I'll boycott and rate a 1
Roxy Music
3/5
An alluring album cover beguiles a mediocre art rock record. The music is technically good but seems to lack real impact
Aerosmith
4/5
A hard rock record with surprising punch. Songs like back in the saddle, rats in the cellar, and sick as a dog are testaments to the bands songwriting chops and influence. A strong showing that while not perfect manages to stand strong almost 50 years later
Funkadelic
4/5
Clinton and the crew manages to craft a mind melding funk psychedelic landscape as only they do best. A milestone in music that would go onto greatly influence modern hip-hop, rock, and other acts
Amy Winehouse
4/5
Amy manages to deliver a vocal performance that inspires generations of pop artists to come. The emotion, genre bending, and charm she infuses into her lyrics shines through on this record, and while it doesn't break much instrumental molds, the vocal delivery deserves all accolades
N.E.R.D
3/5
A fun rap rock record with some socially conscious messaging is always appreciated, but it drags on for far too long overstaying it's welcome
T. Rex
3/5
It's a fine rock record, with "get it on" being the obvious standout and several tracks serving for good glan rock templates, but little stands out otherwise, and the record doesn't accel at producing glam rock hits.
Radiohead
5/5
Every generation has a record that speaks to the zeitgeist, that serves as a time capsule for the hopes, dreams, fears, and apprehensions of the world at a point in time. I would argue no record does that better than Ok Computer for the 90s. A record that expresses a generations hopes but more so fears in the face of rising technology not so much from the technology itself, but the radical transformation to society it brings - the isolation, the loneliness, the aloofness. All of these fears are combined by forlorning instrumentation and desolating lyrics making this record a harbinger of the 21st century, and a standout masterpiece
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Stevie makes hit after hit on this record, demonstrating his range while maintaining a consistent soul and theme in the music
The War On Drugs
2/5
Lost in the dream takes a mediocre soft rock approach which leaves me listening this record had more teeth than it does. It's banal and trite with little standing out
Lana Del Rey
3/5
A somber and moody record. Despite it's whispered vocals and droning instrumentals, the record is still engaging and enjoyable!
The Offspring
3/5
Offspring brings high energy, punchy riffs, and catchy songs to this record with highlights like come out and play. It doesn't break the mold but is entertaining and enjoyable
Kraftwerk
4/5
Droning sounds and dancing synths make this record sound like it's from the 80s synth pop movement - instead, this record is a precursor and an inspiration to the genre. It's catchy yet alien, and somehow kraftwerk finds a way to put it together in a pleasing way!
Sex Pistols
5/5
Sex pistols define classic punk and put their full aggression and social commentary on display on this record. It's punchy and defines the sounds for punk and to a larger extent rock that have dominated the last half-century
The Velvet Underground
5/5
What is there to say about this record that hasn't been said already. It's truly a masterpiece in both music and pop culture
Brian Eno
4/5
Forward thinking, bold, and full of wonderful ideas, this album stands out as a landmark in Eno's incredible solo career
Fun Lovin' Criminals
3/5
A fun and innovative take on rap. Some very catchy hits but drags on a bit
Paul McCartney and Wings
3/5
Classic songs like band on the run are on this record, and it's easy to listen to, with a standout being Picasso's last word. A solid record but doesn't reach the heights as some of Paul's other works and at times feels like a cheap imitation
The Stooges
4/5
Raw power has lots of aggression and charisma, serving as a deeper cut yet standout gem in Iggy Pop and the stooges discography
Elvis Presley
4/5
Having grown up watching Elvis movies and hearing his movie soundtrack records, this is a side of Elvis I had yet to encounter - a beautiful fusion of country and soul
Ute Lemper
2/5
A meh record - it's inclusion here seems like a personal choice versus a record of actual significance.
Tom Waits
3/5
Atmospheric and moody, this record is unique and breaks the mold but is difficult to appreciate as a standout album. It is far more impressive as a recording than a collection of music, but still impressive as that
The Police
4/5
Police put out a catchy yet experimental record, pushing the envelope for mainstream rock and establishing themselves as a household name with this record
Bob Dylan
4/5
Lots and lots of harmonica and long winding songs that never reach any meaningful destination yet remain entertaining
The Police
4/5
Police consistently put out catch and innovating tracks and this record is no exception. Standout singles and fun takes on reggae genre
The Go-Go's
4/5
Gogos produce new wave and radio classics that typify the 80s so well. They got the beat!
Paul Revere & The Raiders
3/5
A pretty mediocre imitation of beach boys at best
Yes
4/5
A entertaining and exciting prog rock album that manages to keep you hooked the whole way through with harmonized vocals and exciting instrumentation
David Bowie
4/5
While Aladdin Sane contains a lot of energy and exciting songs, something about this character doesn't fully click for me in the music. That said Bowie still delivers an incredible performance and good album
Snoop Dogg
4/5
Snoop masters puts together a classic of 90s gangster rap with a laid back attitude yet funky mood that stands out as a pillar of West Coast rap
Lou Reed
4/5
Transformer manages to break the mold and serve as a biting insight into social issues still plaguing us today
Ryan Adams
4/5
Heartbreaker is a standout in alt country, setting itself apart with self indulgent introspective tracks like winding wheel.
Saint Etienne
3/5
A fine album with catchy beats but I probably won't revisit
Cyndi Lauper
4/5
A classic in pop that colors outside the lines, she's so unusual is pop hits that don't fit quite so neatly in that category
Public Enemy
4/5
Public enemy is as relevant and insightful as ever with this timeless hip-hop classic
Def Leppard
4/5
What a landmark in 80s glam metal - sex, drugs, violence and screeching guitars packaged perfectly together by Leppard
Eurythmics
4/5
Great synth pop record
3/5
It's overdramatic and self indulging but not half bad
Adele
2/5
Yes Adele is an impressive vocalist, but did this album really need to make this list? It's boring radio music for folks who had teenage pregnancies
Santana
4/5
Santana delivers a classic album with screaming guitars and timeless vocals
3/5
An incredibly chaotic yet still somehow refreshing jazz excursion
PJ Harvey
4/5
Incredibly raw lyrics and aggression are palpable from this record. A masterclass in authentic songwriting
My Bloody Valentine
5/5
Innovating noise and effects in rock music, MBV knows how to walk the delicate line of experimenting while keeping the music enjoyable, a masterpiece for sure
Otis Redding
5/5
Soul at its finest, Otis defines the landscape for years to come
Beck
2/5
Feels like that teenage rebellion phase you look back on and cringe at - different just for the sake to be different but not very good
Belle & Sebastian
4/5
Smart, bookish, and influential, belle and Sebastian deliver a great record
Amy Winehouse
4/5
A fun foray into spacey jazz
Manic Street Preachers
3/5
A fine brit rock record that doesn't particularly standout
Franz Ferdinand
4/5
A staple of modern alt rock with hits like take me out
Nine Inch Nails
4/5
One of the best noise/alt rock albums ever cut
Beatles
3/5
It's fine, doesn't really have the same timelessness as other Beatles records
Anthrax
3/5
A good foray into heavy metal but doesn't particularly blow me away
Radiohead
3/5
A moody entry into Radiohead discog, good but nothing special compared to their other works
The Doors
5/5
And absolute masterpiece. Need I say more?
The xx
3/5
A fun indie jam, but for better lack of words this record feels too quiet to be monumental.
Beyoncé
3/5
Beyonce finds so many ways to say she is horny on this record and that's entertaining. 3 stars
The Rolling Stones
4/5
The record that introduced us to the stones has some fun and catchy blues jams
Billy Bragg
4/5
Political folk music - can't go wrong with that
Depeche Mode
4/5
Violator explores the full reach of dark synths in the 80s
Pink Floyd
5/5
One of Floyd's most iconic works, with memorable riffs and lyrics. A true masterpiece of prog rock
Pavement
5/5
A wonderful fusion of lofi, noise, folk, and country that stands with a legacy inspiring many modern creek rock groups like Wednesday. I find this album so easy to adore
Turbonegro
4/5
Not ground breaking but perhaps the most fun I've had with a new record in a long time
Suede
3/5
Britpop at its arguably earliest and whiniest.
John Lennon
4/5
This record serves almost as a synopsis of Lennon's life, beginning and ending in a quite poignant note (with Yoko being slapped on if course)
DJ Shadow
4/5
Innovative samples and complex soundscapes that somehow feels a bit dated at times but still incredibly impactful
Al Green
3/5
A soul classic but listening to this record it's understandable why he is a bit of a one hit wonder. The rest of the record is not nearly as strong as the title track
Sisters Of Mercy
4/5
I didn't expect hearing angelic chorus over such dark broody music
SAULT
4/5
Honestly a very good album that strays outside of convention, takes risks, and is still a very enjoyable listen
Eagles
3/5
Some huge singles but the album is so melodramatic and boring
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
Can't spell bayou rock without the bayou! Masterful record
Travis
2/5
Another boring brit pop record. Could not think of a more boring sounding record that you can skip before dying. There are maybe one or two decent singles (Turn) that's dramatics are not enough to elevate this record at all
The Go-Betweens
2/5
Good for Aussie music, but like is this really an essential to hear before you die?
Dire Straits
4/5
Having really only heard money for nothing, this record is very good, with plenty of depth and relistenablity
Led Zeppelin
5/5
When you find shirts in hot topic with this album cover on it, you know it's pretty much perfect
Joni Mitchell
4/5
It's a fun record, with great folk and jazz fusions but I still prefer other joni mitchell works
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
2/5
Moody, experimental and abstract... But that doesn't mean it's good, in contrast to other artists experimenting with synths at the time
Sigur Rós
4/5
Atmospheric, ethereal, an other worldly record that certainly deserves inclusion on this list
Various Artists
4/5
Stocked to the brim with Christmas classics, a fun and timeless record!
Charles Mingus
5/5
Absolute jazz classic that transcends genre, what more is there to say
Stevie Wonder
3/5
While talking book has hints of Wonder's range and dynamism (superstitious the obvious highlight), most of the record still feels a bit too comfortable and safe for an artist of wonders caliber
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
Mediocore attempt at post punk that shows just how wide the gap is between the premier bands in the genre and the every(bunny)man.
Elvis Costello
3/5
Tight song writing and good grooves but doesn't do anything to set itself apart or stand out
Grateful Dead
4/5
American beauty might just be the best jam album ever released
Coldplay
3/5
Coldplay at their peak melodramatic and utterly inane, boring, selves
Eagles
3/5
Eagles are at their best when they harmonize and rock out, which is on full display in this record. That said it's a far cry from ground breaking music but it's okay
The Beach Boys
4/5
On this album, beach boys transition from surfer rock to arguably the greatest pop/rock album in pet sounds is on full display. The harmonies and arrangements are great, but there is some depth and introspection missing from this record that makes it just shy of 5/5
Happy Mondays
3/5
Fun but not a very ground breaking or standout album to me
Nightmares On Wax
3/5
A very pleasant triphop album, but definitely nothing worth writing home about. Might be the best elevator music ever written but it's still elevator music
U2
4/5
I never really understand why folks liked U2. Then I listened to this album.
Siouxsie And The Banshees
4/5
The gothic instrumentation contrasts wonderfully with Siouxsie's vocals which makes a wonderful record
Aretha Franklin
4/5
Queen of soul delivers an iconic performance over wonderful arrangements
3/5
It's an atmospheric, moody record that tries to stretch the boundaries but somehow misses the board entirely. It's not really good but experimental and later records (Smile is a good example) seem to take the same concept and apply it better
David Bowie
4/5
A strong record containing classic bowie tracks but more importantly it's evident he found his voice and style on this record. A must listen for sure
R.E.M.
4/5
Absolutely amazing record taking risks but ultimately just combining an electric performance from the musicians with some very unique lyrics. Green is a great record
Beatles
5/5
If I had to make a book called "1 album you must listen to before you die", it would be this one
Jethro Tull
4/5
A interesting fusion of heavy rock rifts and socially aware lyrics
Giant Sand
3/5
This is a pale imitation of American slowcore and it pains me. Bill Callahan could have had a record on this list instead, but all that said this particular record isn't terrible
Emmylou Harris
4/5
Coat of many colors and boulder to Birmingham are classic country ballards this album helped make a staple
Marvin Gaye
5/5
The quintessential soul album that perfectly captures the human condition with such sincerity that its hard to believe any other album will ever come close
OutKast
5/5
Absolute classic in rap and funk, with a stellar side A that grooves all the way through the long tracklist - it never feels like a slog, always feels fresh and enjoyable
Red Snapper
2/5
Such a bland and forgettable album, coming from someone who loves instrumental records
Air
4/5
Full of interesting sonics and textures, a very enjoyable record
Ramones
5/5
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Springsteens songwriting and vocals are truly some of the best ever recorded and on full display in this record
The Verve
3/5
Decent
Hüsker Dü
3/5
A surprisingly fun album and not in German
4/5
Joni Mitchell
4/5
Joni mitchell is so damn talented
The Doors
4/5
Doors brand of rock never gets old
Jurassic 5
3/5
It's a fun vestige of old school hip-hop but listening to this record it makes sense why this style went the way of the dinosaurs. It becomes uninteresting and feels like you can hear rhymes like this on any highschool playground nowadays. One of them also feels very out of place in this record that makes a point to push positivity on other songs
Metallica
5/5
Along with Black Sabbath's Paranoid this record is in contention for greatest metal record of all time. Unrelenting thrash metal until the levy breaks and it gives way for moments of calm before continuing the onslaught
Sister Sledge
5/5
Disco classic!
B.B. King
4/5
Superb blues record by one of the best to ever do it
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Simon and Garfunkel's folk rock at its best
George Harrison
4/5
The songwriting is tight and the performance is amazing - add to that the wall of sound production blasts through, adding a color to the record that maintains even over 50 years later and you got the best solo ex-Beatles work
Wilco
5/5
A wonderful blend of noise, country, and rock heralding as the Advent of streaming and online music, this record is monumental and filled to the brim with great layering. 10/10
Haircut 100
3/5
I mean it's a fine new wave record I guess
The Who
4/5
It's 60s rock for sure, but even in a space that feels trite, Who manage to have fun with it and make the sound their own. A far cry from where their career ended up but still enjoyable
Deep Purple
4/5
Heavy riffs and great performances, definitely deserves a place on the Mount Rushmore of metal
The Prodigy
4/5
Absolute vibing bangers
The The
4/5
Good album - in between 3 and 4 personally
James Taylor
4/5
A wonderful medley of fusion and styles - Suite for 20G is a perfect example of this
Guns N' Roses
5/5
Stuffed to the brim with outstanding performances - it's a classic
Tears For Fears
4/5
Absolute must listen from the 80s synth pop movement.
5/5
Bowie's breakthrough and transformed pop music. Easy 5
Mariah Carey
2/5
Maybe it was ground breaking at the time but after 20+ years of Rhiannas and Beyonce's it can't seem to hold its own
Tina Turner
4/5
Turner delivers outstanding performance after outstanding performance
Kelela
2/5
This is why the author should wait a minimum of 10 years before including albums. FKA twigs was more influential and making far better music in this space
Bob Dylan
5/5
Absolute classic that rewrote the rules for writing music
Deep Purple
4/5
Everyone has heard the riff, but I've never actually heard Smoke on the water before...
David Bowie
3/5
A very solid offering by Bowie - seems he just can't miss, but not as strong as other records
Lenny Kravitz
2/5
This was not necessary. Not bad, but not necessary
Megadeth
4/5
Heavy and unrelenting, great metal record
Thelonious Monk
5/5
A classic of bebop
Beastie Boys
3/5
Chaotic, in your face record that lacks some of the focus of later work but has oogles of charisma to make up for it
Einstürzende Neubauten
3/5
Heavy proto industrial german art music - its dated by industrial standards but the fact this was recorded 45 years ago is a testament to their skill
The Smiths
5/5
Fucking morrissey
Dwight Yoakam
4/5
Good ole honky tonk music
3/5
Everyone knows supermassive black hole but outside of that ... This record is a bit of a mess. Instead of being a masterful blend of genres, it just sounds messy and like a less interesting version of Radiohead
Green Day
4/5
This record is the most serious one to come out of the pop punk movement, has 4 of the biggest rock songs of all time, and was just performed at the Superbowl. Anything less than a 4 is criminal and above that is personal preference
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
5/5
Absolute jazz classic - take five is in the pantheon of jazz standards and deserves a 5!
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Fun blues jams by the stones that helped the band really breakthrough and find their sound
Solange
4/5
What a superb record celebrating heritage with catchy but emotionally charged performances
King Crimson
5/5
come on it's king crimson! So many iconic songs on one record how can you not give this a 5
Booker T. & The MG's
4/5
Green onions and more green onions. Sounds like a Saturday night ballgame in July
Patti Smith
4/5
Punk rock classic that stands the rest of time braving spoken word and catch tunes
Mike Ladd
3/5
Chill but doesn't feel particularly impactful
Elton John
5/5
Absolute classic - no debating. Elton John forged the archetype of flamboyant, larger than life male pop singer with this record, an image so so many (Harry styles, benson boone, etc) continue to imitate
ZZ Top
4/5
Blues classic, absolute masterful and full of fun!
Willie Nelson
5/5
What can I say about this album. An electric fusion of country and jazz that earns it's entry in this list. It's one of a kind and filled to the brim with Willie's charm and love for music
Johnny Cash
5/5
Cash's final work with some of his most famous covers (Hurt, Personal Jesus).
Sam Cooke
3/5
It's fun and has palpable energy but the song style is pretty dated and doesn't seem to know if it really wants to be soul or pop
Marianne Faithfull
2/5
It's fine and working class hero is a good cover but beyond that...
The White Stripes
2/5
Oh it's the band who sings seven nations army
... nevermind
The Beach Boys
5/5
Absolute classic
John Coltrane
5/5
Masterpiece
Grant Lee Buffalo
4/5
A great and nuanced take of alt country and grunge mixed together
The Pogues
4/5
Celtic rock is so damn fun
Sade
4/5
Really good record
Jeff Buckley
5/5
Everyone knows hallelujah, but the vocal performance on his other tracks is also outstanding
Beck
3/5
I enjoy this version of toned down beck much better but still doesn't seem that impressive of a recording- there are many deep cut folk and country rock records that do a better job of conveying the same message
