Fantastic grammy winning album by an amazing musician. Stads the test of time too.
Oh, the late 80s were shit weren’t they? My only previous experience of Raitt was stuff from the 70s I think, mainly her appearance on the No Nukes live album which features Angel from Montgomery. I rather liked that and she was always an artist I’ve meant to listen to more of. But I really didn’t enjoy the sound here. It’s just that icky late 80s production and vibe that I really dislike and has no soul. All of which is very disappointing I considered 3 stars because this list clearly needs more female artists. But it would be for that only.
Man is this album booooooring. I don't really have much else to say about it. The generic 80s ballads were more entertaining than the generic 80s country songs. High 2.
I listened to this once for the Rolling Stones list and didn’t really care for it at the time. Upon revisiting it my opinion hasn’t changed. It’s not unlistenable at all. I can see why others might like it, but it’s too poppy for my liking. Not something that I needed to listen to more than once that’s for sure. Favorite track: Nick Of Time
I wasn’t too sure about this at first and expected much ‘woe is me’ country stuff (of which there is some) but after a couple of listens there are some really good tunes, particularly Love Letter and I Will not be Denied. Enjoyed the bluesy attitude of Real Man and The Roads My Middle Name. You would have no idea what year this record was made in which is really impressive. Not entirely my thing but struggling with 2 or 3 rating. 2.49/5
Bonnie, where have you been all my life! Great voice, lovely mix of styles throughout the album.
Lovely voice and some good melodies. Not enough memorable songs for a higher score. Rating: 3.0
Bonnie walked so Shania could run, but this is a crude walk across a gravel road without shoes on Id have picked an earlier record though, rather than this one, as I think this is pretty uninspired - and does a disservice to a great songwriter by presenting her as MOR country-lite
Country and popish vibes maje this an easy listen. Bonnie has a great voice and would have no problem listening to this again. Some signature late 1908s synth sounds mixed in with guitars and drums. Quite a soulful voice. Definitely don't mind this album.
I get the reproach. Believe me, I do. But… it’s not terrible, now is it? And it’s truly relevant to music. I also don’t want to call it bad, because so much of the hate it’s garnered has clearly come from some sort of misogynistic attitude. The obvious high point- and the only moment in the entire album that is truly mind-blowing- is the eponymous opener. Rhythmic, hopeful, hints of suspense and stakes, it’s a really great song. Everything else is riding on the afterglow of that, and the only song that really reaches anywhere near the same peaks as that song is the driving, beautiful, incredible “I Will Not Be Denied.” The great thing about this album, obviously, is Raitt’s voice. She isn’t a voice that is too far out of the ordinary, but DAMN can she sing. A hint of rasp in there, lots of soul, incredibly easy to listen to. The lyrics are also consistently pretty good, even though there’s more than a few corny lines sprinkled across the album’s pleasantly manageable 42-minute runtime. The album’s biggest heels are, to put it simply, the ballads. I can take a good ballad or two, but this not only overdoes it, but it features a consistent supply of not-very-impressive adult contemporary ballads, whether the lack of enjoyment be in the underwhelming lyrics that they can tend to feature, or the cheesy to the point of saccharine instrumentation. The album is patchy; patchy but good. Few highs that reach a true “height,” but no songs that stoop to a low that can be measured as unforgivable. Very pleasant personality all-around, and a couple of songs that really, truly hit. 6.8/10 DOES IT BELONG ON THE LIST: YES REASON: a couple of incredible songs, paired with a large helping of accolades makes this a listen that is all but necessary.
4/10
80’s rock
Country with a bit of rock
This was a tough listen for me. I like her in her bluesy mode, but the cheesy 80s synth and adult contemporary vibes are a turnoff. I wonder how this would play if she re-recorded it now.
Boring boring boring
I'm aware of this album, and I think I recognize a few of these tracks by title, but I've never listened to this album start-to-finish. The songs aren't terrible, but the production feels really cheesy. It kind of feels like this would greatly benefit from just a fresh re-recording.
Three letters: MOR I like Bonnie Raitt and respect her career, but I could not get into this pop-country album.
I guess this deserves to be here, as an example of how sterilized the blues had become by the 90s. The 80s pop production is awful on all the blues/rock cuts. Ironically they sound so boring and safe that the pure adult contemporary pop ballads excite me more! Never ever had any nostalgia for Bonnie, parents never listened to her around me, so this is just nothing at all for me. This needed to stay in the 80s
Goed geschreven, maar te gelikt. net geen 3
Never heard, never heard about, didn’t need to listen to it. Truly unremarkable album with unremarkable songs. I’d actually rather listen to Shania Twain, and nobody wants to listen to Shania Twain
Not my thing!
Just not my genre
No private session used for Spotify. I have never tried to get into Bonnie's music. Country with a bit of blues and rock. There is nothing new or unique in the offering. It's bland and it's been done before. Maybe it's a fine representation of the genre, but it doesn't make it interesting. I could have died without hearing this album because I have heard so much like it.
Queen
Never really heard much from Bonnie Raitt but this was pretty enjoyable, I’ll be back to check more out from her. 3.5/5
Not my favorite of hers but maybe her biggest commercial success. 3.5
This is someone’s absolute jam. Good for them.
Amazing album
What a solid album. Not necessarily my jam. A little rock with a country twang. A few classics. Easy listening. Listen to it 3x on the first night. Will likely revisit.
I know who Bonnie Raitt is. I am familiar with some of her music though not this album. Raitt’s voice is okay. It sounds country. There is a lot of slide guitar on this album. She doesn’t write her own songs. There is harmonica on a couple of songs. Most of Raitt’s songs are about relationships, good and bad. Thing called love is a good song. This is an average album. Three stars.
Just great. Her tone, songwriting and attitude in every song just rocks. Some songs are sentimental, while others are fun and bopping, she mixes a healthy amount of rock and roll and blues in there too. Its a little more on the pop side of things than her earlier stuff. I don't think that's a bad thing, but I do prefer her earlier records. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed this today.
Listened before?: nope. i've heard a bit of her music when i was a kid, but i don't recall anything from this album Nick of Time - 3/5 Thing Called Love - 2/5 Love Letter - 2/5 Cry on My Shoulder - 3/5 Real Man - 2/5 Nobody's Girl - 2/5 Have a Heart - 3/5 Too Soon to Tell - 2/5 I Will Not Be Denied - 1/5 I Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again - 1/5 The Road's My Middle Name - 1/5 Average score: 2/5 ⭐️⭐️ i know very little of her music besides what my family played in passing, but i know one thing for sure; she has released far more interesting albums than whatever this was. it's really safe and inoffensive music. but it's *too* safe, to the point where it's just an uninspired bore Bonnie's a talented vocalist, no doubt about that. however, it was a poor choice to pick this album as something we *must* hear. maybe some other album of hers is more deserving of landing on this list, but definitely not this one
It shouldn't work. That Country feel with an 80's synth pop mashup. But it does work. Plus, it's Bonnie. She can do no wrong! The slower songs weren't really my jam though so i think it only gets a 4 I added "Love Letter" to the playlist
Great album. Nothing objectionable here. Classic Americana. Wikipedia doesn't indicate Country as a genre, but it definitely leans country. Love Letter is an earworm that's going into my jukebox rotation.
Tyttöenergiaa 80-luvulta. Kantria ja vähän muutakin
I'm a big fan of Raitt's first two albums, which are really fantastic, but the later work doesn't do a lot for me. This was obviously a big hit and I'm glad that she got this success, but it has too much of a solid foot in adult contemporary music and a particular late 80's production style for my taste. I think that this says more about what I want out of music than it really says about the record itself.
nix für mich, ist zwar richtig gut gespielt und gesungen...aber, wie gesagt...
Not bad, but nothing stands out.
Actually a pretty decent offering of country rock.
I didn't expect to like this, but this is fun. Some good lines, a few good tunes, it's not my usual cup of tea, but I can see that it's been influential, if only on Shania Twain!
Usually I'm a big fan of 80's pop
Easy listening and great vocals
As a divorced 50 year old woman in Minnesota in 1992, this is my jam.
It's okay, during this time I would have been listening to more New Wave or hair bands, but I did go through a country phase in the late 80s.
3.5
Staple of my collection. Not always in the mood for every song, but the title song means so much to me. That alone gets this album to a 4-star.
I like Bonnie Raitt. She's a great singer who has written some banger songs, and her guitar playing (particularly with a slide) is top notch. Unfortunately, her albums tend to lean a little too easy listening for my tastes. More of a 3.5/5
Really enjoyed this album
Never really understood the appeal of Bonnie Raitt and this one didn’t make me feel any differently. Not sure why this is an album I needed to hear before I die. 2⭐️
Ha pasado un poco sin pena ni gloria por mis oídos. No lo he visto tan interesante como para estar en esta lista. Canciones favoritas: The Road's My Middle Name
Pure distillation of 80s.
This was a tough slog. Not to say that Bonnie doesn’t have a beautiful voice - she does. But as music goes, soft rock is for dead people. I’m not sure what the actual audience is for this type of pablum, but this album like all of Steely Dan is soulless anti-music that would be excellent at torturing anyone who loves music. The music is so flawless and precise that it acts as sonic drapes for Bonnie’s voice. Bonnie does her best but the depths of the lifeless music is so great even she cannot raise the dead. I like Bonnie and you can tell her effort is sincere but it’s such a shame that her music is best played in funeral homes rather than clubs. It’s albums like this that give clarity to what the authors of the book were thinking at the time. I imagine they thought - hey let’s include Steely Dan and Bonnie Rait on the list. Then people will know that we’re not serious and we’re just fucking around. Play at your own risk. 1/5
Guitar goddess
es war okay, aber mir dann doch zu Country-lastig. Bonnie Raitt ist allerdings eine wirklich tolle Gitarristin, daher trotzdem noch 3 Sterne.
Favorite Track: The Road's My Middle Name
boy did i love this soft adult contemporary a lot more than i thought i would.
It was nice to get some country music in here again!
Not bad stuff. Definitely not something my twenty year old self would ever tell my friends I was listening to, but it ain’t bad either.
An ok album nothing special pretty average sounding nice voice just nothing ground breaking or anything that excites me just all round average on all levels
Really nice warm voice. Like the bluesy guitar sound. Quite relaxed but good songs.
Nothing special
Well, this album is not that bad, actually, but trully it lacks of something more interesting. It almost feels like a soul-like country-pop, which, in theory, it should not necessarily be a bad thing, but it does not work that well, to be honest. It is still a pleasant album.
Fairly generic country pop album from the 80/90 border. Again, almost seemed AI generated in how perfectly generic it was. Wasn't bad, just wasn't overly good.
Better than the album cover suggests!
This album is part of our collection. The last album on the list which we have goes back to #421. A very familiar album and yet I forgot all about it. The music is a mix of pop, rock, country, and blues. Reviewing the Wiki page I see that there are many top notch musicians who contributed to this album.
Well, I like her hairdo and the swoopy B-R. Otherwise... they're calling this "heartland rock", which really means "Adult Contemporary", the likes of which you'd hear on 101.3 The Rose, aka if I'm hearing this I'm surely at the dentist. At least Steely Dan aren't the only ones! All genders can make boring music for me to hate while my mouth hurts! (Actually, this is very similar to Shania Twain's best-selling album "Come On Over", which I listened to quite a lot... but I submit that this album is a less interesting version of that one, which isn't even *that* interesting in retrospect!) Whatever, it's unobjectionable, so Bonnie "The Road" Raitt, I Raitt you a Middle-of-"The Road" 3. Herbie Hancock is on this album, also. He's famous. Line that left me pondering: "I ain't no porcupine, take off your kid gloves."
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would because it’s not my typical genre. Very smooth and well produced and nice to listen to. There’s a really impressive maturity to the themes and songwriting that I loved
Perfectly fine mix of pop, country, and soul. Not bad at all, but didn't strike me as remarkable. Enjoyed some tracks, but that's about it.
It makes sense that her biggest hit is a cover, she’s not much of a songwriter. These songs were all dull.
Fair
I liked the singles
The 80s hangover slick production and sound of a lot of songs on this record. Yuck. She's a good singer and slide player, hard to get mad into the songs, it's not blowing me away in any respect, fairly standard mainstream radio aimed stuff. Of it's time. 4/10
Nick of Time - 3/5 Thing Called Love - 3/5 Love Letter - 3/5 Cry on My Shoulder - 2/5 Real Man - 2.5/5 Nobody's Girl - 2.5/5 Have a Heart - 2/5 Too Soon to Tell - 2/5 I Will Not Be Denied - 2.5/5 I Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again - 2/5 The Road's My Middle Name - 2.5/5 So this was actually an adult contemporary album masquerading as a country-pop album. Although the first few songs were interesting, the rest of the tracks quickly become repetitive and boring and I lost interest about halfway through. It's not completely boring, but it seems like this was the threshold where this kind of music went from somewhat interesting to lacking any sort of flavor. Overall: 2/5 Favorites: Nick of Time
Nah man
"Nick of Time" starts mellow and slow, with the title track and Bonnie Raitt displaying that she has a nice, soulful voice. Though I'm unfamiliar with Raitt's material I am familiar with her her reputation for being a bluesy artist and there's a smidgeon of that next with 'Thing Called Love'. And so the album flows, it's well produced, perhaps too nicely with a distinctive late 1980s feel, but I found nothing essential or anything that made me sit up and take notice. Sonically, it's a safe record - nothing bad but nothing inspiring. The story behind the album is inspiring and I'm assuming that's why this album is on this list. Three stars. 1 "Nick of Time" (3/5) 2 "Thing Called Love" (3/5) 3 "Love Letter" (3/5) 4 "Cry on My Shoulder" (3/5) 5 "Real Man" (3/5) 6 "Nobody's Girl" (3/5) 7 "Have a Heart" (3/5) 8 "Too Soon to Tell" (3/5) 9 "I Will Not Be Denied" (3/5) 10 "I Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again" (3/5) 11 "The Road's My Middle Name" (3/5) Total - 33 Average - 3.0 428/1001 226/428 albums reviewed were new to me.
★★★½
Nice country/folk vibe that reminded me of several other artists from around that era. I enjoyed this well enough, she has a nice voice
me hace acordar a stevie nicks. me gusto
Not what I was expecting at all. Really enjoyed the start but soon got bored What a beautiful voice though, wow 3 ⭐️
Okayy
I didn't like the first few songs. Then it got worse.
I guess this is certainly an album. It’s very cheesy but I bumped it up one star because it’s kind of bouesy in some places.
Maso
Americana rock that sounds like it’s just on the cusp of the 90s. Music my dad would listen to (complimentary). She’s got a great voice and I love the way her and the male backing vocals sound together. In general this has a no-note-out-of-place production style that really works. I guess it’s a little polished for something that’s partially a blues album, but I like the lush, careful work at the mixing board. It does fare better when it leans away from the overtly 1980s sounds. There are some occasional corny instrumentations (“Have A Heart” comes to mind). But it’s really all about her voice; I could listen to Raitt sing anything. Strong three.
It's just normal. Country-soul music. It's just not my thing.
80’s Adult Orientated Rock. Sheryl Crow like. Type of thing that I’d expect to hear, if not enjoy, from a live band in an American bar with ice cold shit beer. Bit disappointed with this. Was expecting more. Not terrible (maybe Cry On My Shoulder and Too Soon To Tell were) but close.
I'm possibly not Real Man enough for Bonnie because the one song i didn't absolutely hate was Have a Heart, which was average. I'm sure Shania or Sheryl probably do this kind of thing better, maybe Bonnie was first though. Anyway, not for me. Generous 2 stars
Really wanted to go 3 one star reviews in the bounce but this, while being far from good, wasn't quite *that* bad
Never heard of her before today. Seems this album didn’t chart in the UK, and from what I heard, for good reason. “Musically proficient” is the best I can offer, although my life is none the richer for having discovered this most 80’s of 80’s releases. As per Megadeath yesterday, it’s a harsh 1, a generous 2.
This is a boring album that reeks of divorced middle aged ladies
I think the story behind this album, of hard tunes and a big comeback, feeds into why people might like it. But I found it bland, with nothing to grab my attention in the lyrics or delivery, and horrible rights production values.
People are so hard on this. It basically invented VH1 along with the guys from the Robin Hood movie
I feel like I've heard a couple of these songs just by being out and about, I liked it just alright. Favorite Track: The Road's My Middle Name
Boon raids man. The best way to get rid of the enemy is to get rid of the enemies first before they are defeated and then you can get rid of them later on with a new enemy. Fucking sick slide player
This pop-rock-country-blues sound with a splash of adult contemporary is just not for me. It alternates between sounds I don’t care for and sounds that seem like they’ve been done thousands of times before in more interesting ways. Just a bit of a bore to get through.
I might be overrating this slightly but I enjoyed it and I don’t give out nearly enough 4s
Except for one or two tracks and against my expectations, I actually liked the album quite a bit. Still, I don't feel the urge to listen to it more often. It was okay. 3/5
