nothing could've prepared me for the liberal use of the n-word on the opening track. and i'm not willing to hear anyone's "b-but it's meant to be satirical!" excuses either.
i think we've come to a point in society where we can critique racism without non-black people resulting to using slurs. if you ask me, it's just plain lazy; do better.
overall, the album was alright i guess. it all mostly sounded like toy story music, much like the rest of his work. some of the songs in the last half stood out to me a bit i suppose

Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury
The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy
didn't care for this
instrumentals were fine, kinda unimpressive for my taste (though 90s hip hop is admittedly hit-or-miss for me). didn't care much for neither the artist's voice or his flow. the majority of tracks also felt like they ran 2-3 minutes longer than they should've, probably because the guy repeats the title several times throughout to pad out the time
this had political/societal messaging throughout, which i'm usually fine with. hell, i'll admit i've heard socially-conscious rap done well before. however, it lacks subtlety. the message is either made plainly obvious with no nuance or nonsensical political word vomit

A Little Deeper
Ms. Dynamite
couldn't get through this one in full
this artist is yet another case of "who tf is this and why tf are they on this list?" the author of the 1001 albums book has a horribly bias towards obscure UK artists that've barely gained any notoriety within the UK, much less anywhere else in the world
the music's not "bad," a few of the tracks toward the beginning were even okay. but this shallow Lauryn Hill wannabe album being on a list of must-listens is laughable. there are far more noteworthy female artists that could've made it onto this list (Little Simz is from the UK! hello??)
giving this a 2 simply because i know worse albums will be on this list

Play
Moby
I'd only ever heard Porcelain years ago, which was alright to me at the time, so I had high hopes for liking the rest of the album.
I just didn't like it, I'm afraid. The majority of this is looped blues samples over near-identical and repetitive drums and keyboards. On the tracks that aren't samples, the vocals aren't great and the lyrics often sound very basic, almost sterile.
I guess can see how some people could get into this sound when it first came out, but it definitely didn't age well imho. There's plenty of albums from the 90s or older that feel timeless in comparison.
I'll give this a (very reluctant) 2/5.

one of my fav albums from one of my fav artists. when i say i enjoy post-punk, *this* is what the fuck i'm talking about
it's wacky and weird and goofy in the best of ways. even my least fav tracks are fun in their own ways, and the better tracks make up for them tenfold. because of this, i felt it was deserving of a little boost in score
the only complaint i've got is there aren't MORE albums by DEVO featured on this list!! this album is hands down my fav of their entire discography and deserves the highlight, but you're telling me that Freedom of Choice didn't make the cut as well?? c'mon now.

okay now i understand what i didn't like about this album on my first listen
i liked a few tracks i suppose. i could even enjoy *something* about the tracks i rated lower, and that something was the instrumentation. everything else? not so much.
Paul Weller's a decent vocalist i suppose, but his lyrics are corny, generic, and preachy at times. if it weren't for that fact, i could've enjoyed this album far better than i did
it takes more than just good instrumentation and production to make an enjoyable album, hence why i can't bring myself to give this any higher of a score than I have

Our Aim Is To Satisfy
Red Snapper
i feel similarly to this as I did to albums like Play by Moby: it's very repetitive and the sound gets old fast. in fact, i think i enjoyed this less.
it's obvious they were going for a similar sound to Massive Attack or Portishead, kind of a trip hop vibe. some tracks had potential but were just dull. others were just odd, like wtf was with that weird alien-sounding noise on The Rake??
this is yet another obscure/subpar UK music from the 90s and 00s that no one's ever heard of being listed as music we should "listen to before we die." i'll stick to massive attack and portishead, they do it much better.

i've heard of Meat Loaf, but never listened to anything from him til now. based on the album cover, i figured this would be some sort of metal album or glam rock... i was proven very wrong. this sounded like if Bruce Springsteen decided to dabble in musical theater
i've given this album 2 listens in a row and i'm still struggling to determine whether or not i liked this. every song felt like a roller coaster; i'm hooked for a moment, then lost and disoriented in another (especially in Paradise By the Dashboard Light)
regardless of whether this sound is "for me" or not, i can't deny this man's talent, energy and powerful vocal performance.

upon hearing the opening track, i was ready to write this whole album off as shit and stop listening. after finishing the entirety, i think i can say this was... fine?
i don't doubt this album slapped by the 90s standard, but this did NOT age well after nearly 30 years since release, particularly the bluegrass-y fusion tracks. while most of this was tolerable, it was just that. tolerable.

favs: (sic), eyeless, wait and bleed, spit it out, liberate, eeyore
drums definitely are the the best part of this album, same with all their other releases
i'm really surprised how harshly this is being rated here tbh. it's not perfect, but i don't think this was nearly as awful as some of these reviews say it is

honestly surprised this made its way onto the list of albums to hear before you die. do i agree that this is a *must* hear? absolutely not.
this really sounds like "baby's 1st punk album" after re-listening. i enjoyed it a lot as a teen (particularly the first half or so) but even my nostalgia doesn't overshadow the fact that many of the tracks sound same-y. regardless, i've definitely heard worse.

i didn't have high hopes for this one, and it seems my instincts were proven right this time.
this one's a snoozer for sure. the instrumentals, while not terrible, put me to sleep. the vocals are not very good either imho. nearly incoherent, in fact.
almost none of these tracks stuck out to me, most were pretty forgettable. Weighted Down (The Prison Song) was oddly nice in comparison to the first few tracks, and War In Peace was probably the best overall in this whole album (likely because this is where the album drifted away from folk and became more psychedelic)
i would really like to talk to the maker of this list and ask them their reasoning for putting this on a list of must-hear albums, cuz i just don't get it. guess this just isn't for me

not the kind of music i listen to often but i can appreciate it. beautiful mix of soul and country from front to back, and the versatility of Ray's voice is definitely showcased here.

i remember Lazarus the most since i last listened, it's definitely the best track on here, followed by the finishing track. only one i didn't like was 'Tis A Pity, something about the instrumentals and vocals was off-putting (maybe a little too "out there" for me)
overall, while this was a hard listen in some spots, i don't think anyone could ask for a better performance given his battle with cancer while making this. i consider this a beautiful farewell album from such a legendary artist

this one needed a couple breaks for me to get through, but it was fine. the album starts off strong the first few songs and had a strong-ish end (if you don't include that sexist garbage song Slut), but the majority of the middle tracks were pretty forgettable
as far as the quality of the songs, most songs were pretty middle of the road for me, with a handful of some gems in there. i felt like i'd heard most of what this album had to offer by the halfway point though, which made sitting through all 25 tracks a little difficult
this is the first of his discography i've come across on this album generator, and looking at his other albums i'm seeing most are (while not being *as* long as this one) are still fairly lengthy. i guess i'd better brace myself

author of this list must've only listened to Paint It, Black cuz that's one of the ONLY good songs on this album. after that song, it's pretty much all downhill from there
their influence in music is not lost on me and i've liked some of their other albums, but man this wasn't good. Jagger's vocals were... Jagger's vocals, many of the songs sounded like they were dicking around with *concepts* of a blues song (wtf was that 11-minute track?) and the misogynistic tones of Stupid Girl and Under My Thumb? ew.
i'm cool off hearing the majority of this album ever again

this is a huge improvement from their Aftermath album, that's for sure. it sounds like they solidified their blues sound since that album. the production sounds a lot cleaner here too, which i feel compliments their performance a lot better overall.
none of the tracks were terrible by any means, though Parachute Woman was probably my least favorite. everything else was alright to me, maybe even good

i liked Baba O'Riley and i know it's the most famous track of theirs ever but i think it's been played out imho, i've heard in too many ads over the years. Getting In Tune and Behind Blue Eyes were my standout tracks from this album, i could see myself playing them on the regular

okay, this wasn't *as bad* as i thought it was my first listen. perhaps this album is a grower and just something that didn't instantly "click" for me
i still stand by my belief that the lead vocalist wasn't great. the first time i listened, he sounded like a drunk british man mumbling and yowling into a karaoke mic, and i still kinda think so this time around. instrumentals were fine, in fact, a lot of these songs could've been rated higher in my books if the singing was better
is this a "must-listen" album? ehhhh, maybe if post-punk music is your thing (it's certainly my thing). i'm glad i gave this album another chance without completely writing it off as shit

love me some elliott smith, he's been a huge influence of many of the artists i listen to for good reason. this album hits hard knowing this is the last album he released before taking his own life
i'm a fan of all his albums really, but this one stands out uniquely from the rest. his production evolved somewhat from his more subtle acoustic sound in previous releases, though his vocals and instrumentals that he's known for are still present. some might argue this was "overproduced" but i disagree
the songs about as melancholic as his other albums, which i imagine might be off-putting to some, but all the tracks sounded so pleasant to me in an instrumental sense that it's not nearly as depressing as some of his others. XO is probably still my fav of all his releases i've heard so far, but damn does this come close to dethroning that title
rest peacefully, king

aside from that, i enjoyed this quite a bit. i've yet to listen to the rest of their discography in full but if their other albums are as good as this then i'm in for a treat

the title track is definitely the best, and the song i go to most off of this album, but that doesn't necessarily mean the other tracks are bad by any means. Price has a smooth, crooning voice that tugs at the heartstrings (think Frank Sinatra if he decided to go down the country-western route)
i think as i listen to more albums like this, i'm coming to learn that i don't necessarily hate country, just *some* country. either that, or i'm beginning to appreciate the sound as i grow older. i enjoyed this about as much as i would anything by Marty Robbins or Johnny Cash and the like, so if you're a fan of those artists you might appreciate this too

yeah, no.
this went all over the place in terms of style, and not in any way that did this album any favors. with every genre hop, it shatters any immersion i would've had. and what the actual fuck was that attempt at hip-hop??
the one song featuring Tracey Thorn was probably the better song out of everything here, likely cuz it sounds like a masterpiece in comparison to the tracks Weller sang on. some of the purely instrumental tracks were okay as well. however, once i reached the last half, any sense of enjoyment quickly left me
i've yet to hear anything from Weller's days with The Jam, but i really hope it's not as bad as what i've heard here. i think this was deserving of a two simply because of instrumentation alone

honestly didn't know what to expect since i'd only heard one or two of their tracks in passing, but i really liked this! similar to what others have pointed out, this band sounds like Nick Drake if his music were more upbeat, so i guess it makes sense that this album would click with me. i could see some tracks being used for some indie coming-of-age film for sure (assuming they haven't been already of course)

fuckin' gorgeous album from start to finish. Jeff Buckley was a talented singer-songwriter (much like his dad), and it's a damn shame he passed away so young (also much like his dad)
now i'm realizing the majority of my fav artists in the singer-songwriter category have died ridiculously young... :(
i've yet to hear the original version of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, and i'd only ever heard the performance by Rufus Wainwright prior to hearing this version via Shrek. Jeff blew Rufus's performance out of the fuckin' water, hands down
it's sad this is the only album he made before his untimely passing, but it truly is fantastic

this was... interesting. i can't say for certain whether it's the good type of interesting or not.
i've never heard anything like this within the post-punk genre before, and i'm conflicted with how to feel about it. it's a strange fusion of punk and country, especially with the use of fiddles throughout. in some tracks, i don't mind it, but it's a little nauseating in others
i'm noticing a trend with the post-punk artists on this list where their vocalists are kinda dogshit at singing (The Fall being another example), and i absolutely cannot stand it. are these bands just recruiting the first drunkard they find at the pub for their singer or something?
the album did pick up in quality tracks toward the last half, fortunately, but the first half was hard to sit through. maybe i'll come across another artist in this genre that does this sound justice in the future, but i won't hold my breath

two songs in and it's abundantly clear to me that this is gimmicky glam rock. not that there's anything wrong with that i guess
my enjoyment of the vocalist's performance overall is like 50/50. i feel like he was overdoing it at times, particularly on Get Your Hands off My Woman. like we get it man, you can hit high notes
after listening in full, i guess i can say this was okay for what it is; it's camp, it's tongue-in-cheek, and obviously not trying to be taken seriously. this isn't an album i'm likely to return to in full though

i'm no puritan or anything, and i don't mind more explicitly sexual songs when they're done right, but i was unimpressed by how much this album mentions sex. i'm halfway through the album as i'm writing this and i feel like i've pretty much heard all there is to hear about her riding and throwing ass
i had higher hopes going into this that there'd be a little more empowering messaging besides sex, but i suppose the saying "sex sells" applies here. i will give her a bit of credit with the last 1/3 of the tracklist, those songs were more up my alley
i wouldn't call myself a Beyonce fan, but she's obviously a talented artist and her production has always been top-notch. i just think she's released far better material since this album that could've been showcased on this list

i'm feeling 50/50 on the vocal performance. i wouldn't say i hated it, but i didn't love it either. the singer's performance was beautiful at times and comical in others, but i've certainly heard stranger.
what are some of these lyrics though?? many of these songs are nonsensical to the point of being distracting at times
whatever story the artist is trying to paint with his performance isn't clear at all whatsoever. it's music, sure, but it's also a lyrical clusterfuck

i enjoyed this quite a bit, but i still feel Who's Next had a better sound overall

i didn't want this racist schizo motherfucker making any money from my streaming of his albums (i have him blocked on spotify for this very reason) but i also wanted to try rating this and giving it a fair shot. with a little workaround (thanks free mp3 sites ❤️) i managed to give it a spin
man what a fucking waste of time. i've heard hip-hop fans praise this album up and down as his best work for years... is the best work in the room with us?? i don't get the hype at all
pros: production was okay, that tends to be his strength. i consider the sampling kinda lazy by today's standards, but i suppose this was acceptable for the early 2000s.
cons: everything else. he's rapped better in other albums in his discography. too many skit tracks. too long of a run-time. this was one of the few instances where i couldn't stand to sit through multiple tracks without skipping
i think my final score is very generous. his performance here, while not impressive in my opinion, was just good enough to not be considered the worst thing i've listened to

nico's singing improves the velvet underground's sound immensely, and i don't even really care for nico very much
as i've mentioned in other reviews of TVU/Leonard Cohen albums, i cannot stand Leonard's vocals most of the time. however, i feel the group's performance overall was better on this album, or at least good enough for me to look past the weaker moments

Average score: 3.8/5 (rounding up)
this is definitely not the mbv i'm used to
i think the only thing keeping me from liking this album more than i do is the production. sometimes it adds to the charm of their sound, other times it muddies up their performance a bit too much for my liking. the tracks are hit-or-miss because of this
overall, this was a refreshing listen and it was cool to see the group's earlier work. personally i don't think this isn't a "must-listen" like Loveless is, but a worthwhile listen if you're wanting to discover more of mbv's discography
side note: why tf is this not on spotify??

was never much of a Depeche Mode listener prior to this, aside from a couple of their popular tracks (Enjoy the Silence and the like). idk how this group was off my radar for so long but this album's a nice introduction
Never Let Me Down Again instantly hooked me in, definitely the best track on here as well. some other tracks that stood out to me were Strangelove, Behind The Wheel, and Nothing.
i wasn't crazy about the last 5 songs like i was for the first 6, hence why it's a 4-star rating in my book rather than a 5. however, i wouldn't say there's any "bad" tracks here, and it's a pleasant listen from start to finish

having already heard Automatic For The People last month, i think i can confidently say i enjoyed this album a little bit more. maybe it's the fact the songs sound a bit more upbeat and faster paced?
this kind of sound isn't typically what i choose to listen to regularly. however, i liked most of the tracks just fine, and i could see myself going back to listen to R.E.M. in the future

i know the reviews were warning enough, but i really wanted to keep an open mind and give it a fair review. nothing could've prepared me for how bad this was. i couldn't even make it halfway through
i have to agree; this sounds like a less talented and more pretentious David Bowie. i can only assume this is another case of an artist making it onto this list because they're from the UK, as per usual
i can't fathom why the author of the book thought everyone should listen to this. there's so many more talented artists that the post-punk genre has to offer. do better!!

hurts to say as a Bowie fan, but i didn't care for this
it's no debate that he's a fantastic artist who's work is deserving of making this list, but i don't think this album was one of them. it really pales in comparison to the work he released in his prime, both instrumentally and vocally. hell, even his final album before his passing was better than this
that being said, the album wasn't *all* bad. Where Are We Now was the best track here. The Stars and Valentine's Day were also decent. otherwise, the majority of tracks here were very forgettable
tl;dr - not a terrible album in comparison to others on the 1001 list, but definitely not the best of Bowie's discography or what i'd consider a must-listen

oddly enough, i really don't mind Tom Wait's vocals like others here do. however, i feel that gravelly grumbly voice definitely doesn't suit some of the tracks here. his singing sounds fine in more bluesy tracks like Heartattack And Vine, but sounds laughably bad in slower ballad-like tracks like Jersey Girl (especially in those "la-la-la" moments... oof)
i don't think his voice is completely unsuitable for slower songs. i've heard it done well before, even on this album with On The Nickel. it's just not executed well sometimes

The Rising
Bruce Springsteen
i had a feeling this would be another instance of this album being a little too long for my liking, and boy was i right. i got sick of this by the 3rd track (which was probably one of the most excruciating tracks here) and completely gave up by the 5th. the fact that this album is 15 tracks long is crazy
everything sounded nearly identical in sound and theme. all of it was corny, hyper-patriotic or a combination of the two. maybe this tone is due to a post-9/11 America, idk. i just didn't like this at all
so far i've only listened to Born To Run prior to this, and i thought it was alright. i'm hoping i've gotten past the worst of Springsteen and that it'll all be uphill from here

BaBopByeYa - 3/5 (beautiful, just really long)
Average score: 4.4/5 (rounding up for overall quality)
this is a hell of a debut album. banger after banger, front to back. i'm not surprised though, Janelle is talented performer, and i'd even argue she gives other female artists a run for their money
loved the production. the transition between the first few tracks or so is truly seamless. i'll be so caught up vibing with one that i won't even realize that i'm already like 20 seconds into the next. my personal favs were Wondaland, Mushrooms & Roses, Faster, and Cold War
if this is the raw energy and talent she's bringing on her first album ever, i'd better fucking brace myself for when i listen to the rest of her albums.

The Way She Dances - 5/5
Chariot Of Fire - 5/5
Average score: 4.3/5 (rounding down)
this was a nice listen. not a nice enough listen to give a 5-star rating like i hoped i would, but still pretty good. i had higher hopes going of absolutely loving this one considering my being a fan of N.E.R.D and Pharrell's production in the past, but in the end i'm not totally disappointed
it was refreshing to hear the blend of different genres, and this combination of sounds is fun to listen to... when it was executed well. after the rocky start with the first 5 tracks, the last 7 finally came in to bless my ears.
Breakout was my favorite song here by far, followed by Wonderful Place and Maybe. in my opinion, the instrumentation in the last 2/3 of the album was far more complimentary to Pharell's voice as well compared to the abrasiveness early on
personally, i think this album is a great one that just so happens to have a rough start. it lacks some cohesion, and it took some patience getting past the first few songs, but the album's well worth listening to after that. perhaps in time it'll grow on me more

this was okay i guess. i'd even go as far as to say it was a somewhat entertaining listen. however, i wouldn't say it was all that revolutionary overall, nor something i feel i should've heard before i died
i really wanted to like this more than i did. similar to what others have said here, these tracks are all over the place. i don't think they're necessarily trying to bite the style of their contemporaries (Queen, ELO, maybe even Yes?), but it sounded like they were trying anything and everything here. it sounded really busy and in-cohesive as a result

really wish i wasn't one of those people who writes jazz off as background music. i don't mind when it plays, i'm just not as engaged as true fans of the genre
that being said, even i can recognize that this is definitely one of the best (if not THEE best) jazz has to offer. and that's gotta be a true statement, since this is probably the most undivided attention i've ever given to a jazz record, period. Davis, Coltrane and Evans on one album? hard to beat that level of artistry

Believe Me Natalie - 4/5
Midnight Show - 3/5
Everything Will Be Alright - 2/5
Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll - 2/5
Average score: 3.6/5 (rounding down)
my only exposure to this album prior to today was track 2-5 (Mr. Brightside - All These Things That I've Done). they're all great in my opinion, especially Smile Like You Mean It. it could be just the nostalgia talking, but i feel like that's kinda the appeal of a group like The Killers
as for the songs i hadn't heard yet, it was a mixed bag. there were some noteworthy ones, such as On Top and Believe Me Natalie. i didn't care for Andy You're A Star or Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll, mostly due to the corny lyrics. Everything Will Be Alright had potential, but fell short in terms of lyrics as well
i'm not sure the album as a whole is something i'd consider essential to listen to, but the popular tracks are definitely worth listening to at least once. it's difficult to rate this album on such a rigid scale (really wish they'd at least let you do half-star ratings here), but i think 3 stars is about as high as i'm willing to rate this one

Devil Without A Cause
Kid Rock
no exaggeration, i whined like a petulant child when i realized i had to listen to Kid Rock. similar to my rating of Kanye West's albums, i refuse to let this guy profit off my streams, so i've gotten creative with how to accomplish rating this 🏴☠️
Bawitdaba - 3/5
Cowboy - 3/5
Devil Without a Cause - 1/5
I Am the Bullgod - 2/5
Roving Gangster (Rollin') - 3/5
Wasting Time - 1/5
Welcome 2 the Party... - 1/5
I Got One for Ya' - 2/5
Somebody's Gotta Feel This - 4/5
Fist of Rage - 3/5
Only God Knows Why - 2/5
Fuck Off - 2/5 (Eminem carried lol)
Where U at Rock - 2/5
Black Chick, White Guy - 2/5 (it's obviously commentary on his life, but i do not have 12 minutes to waste hearing it)
Average score: 2.2/5
ugh... where to begin
i already know of Bawitdaba and Cowboy from the radio, they're relatively tame tracks in comparison to the rest of the album so they get a generous 3-star rating for that alone. Someone's Gotta Feel This was surprisingly inoffensive to me as well for some reason. it's all pretty much downhill from there i'm afraid
i don't want to write about every song i hated (this'd turn into a 10-page essay if i did), so i'll just mention one that really stood out to me as particularly bad: Devil Without a Cause. i had to stop listening by the 4:00 mark due to that child (Joe C?) rapping
my biggest issue with the majority of this album isn't necessarily how these songs sound, but rather, how *long* they are. some of them feel like they go on forever, and it took a lot of restraint for me to not just give up on reviewing all together. most of these songs could've been easier to sit through if they were just 1-2 minutes shorter
in conclusion, this was pretty damn bad, but not bad enough to end up among my lowest-rated. if this hadn't been on this 1001 albums list, i would've been fine having not heard it. there's nothing revolutionary happening here; artists like Rage Against The Machine, Run DMC, Beastie Boys and Limp Bizkit had been blending rock and hip hop long before him, and they did it far better

instrumentation on this album in general was impressive. similar to what i've seen a few others mention, it's a little disorientating how many genres the group was playing around with here. are they prog rock? jazz? funk? it's a little much at times
regardless, it was a fun listen and i'm glad i gave it a spin. on a less rigid rating scale, this would probably get 3.5 stars rather than 4. i don't think this is my new favorite album or anything, but i'd come back to a handful of tracks again
