Not exactly my thing, but can't really deny this one. Solid all the way through. LOVE the cheesy 80's keys. Bonnie Raitt, yet another not necessarily 80's artist who assimilated to the era and hit it big. 5
Long time favourite
Favorite!
Awesome
Bonnie Raitt
Amazing
80's, funky, blues
At 15 years old I can’t say I was into Bonnie… I heard the radio hits back then but the real gems are the blues tunes like The Road is My Middle Name. Great album.
Awesome
A fabulous album and a long time favouritite
perfect hair, perfect album. The Charli XCX sample of Nick of Time is also excellent and has been my jam for quite some time.
country folk rock, very nice
Always loved this - sentimental 5 out of 5
Pardon me, Bonnie. I was not familiar with your game. This was AMAZING
Now this is an album from a strong woman Great voice brilliant lyrics good music 9.5 out of 10
Brilliant from start to finish. Great songs, well played and expertly sung.
Loved the pop/country mix. Nick of Time is a killer song and a great way to open the album as it sets the tone for what’s to come. I was expecting a bunch of twangy country music and while it has shades of that it’s way more accessible and enjoyable. I’ll be returning to this one again *edit* After bumping this album over and over again for the past few months and then listening to a bunch of Bonnie’s albums, I’m giving this one 5 stars. It’s so good
Incredible. I just know the hoedowns in Mississippi were good Real man
Solid album. Not a country music fan but Bonnie transcends the genre with her outstanding vocals and guitar playing. I could go for an entire album of tunes like The Road's My Middle Name.
I expected this to be a polarizing album between the soulful balladeers who like sweet lyrics and gentle chords vs the hard screaming junkies who want loud instrument noise with screaming singers of 3 word lyrics for 7 minutes. Album sounds (and is) very dated 80s, but Raitt's smooth tones fit well with the mellow moods. 1001 albums ranking is a joke, but this album is a easy listen and one of the original fusion albums of rock and blues with blues taking the lead. Throw in a little country tones s well and you get 5/5 rating.
Day31 - i was just a teen when this album came out it was my first intro to bonnie raitt. i remember liking a couple songs then but now i can appreciate this album and see why it was so loved and awarded and if you’ve never heard her version of angel from montgomery you should know.
Heroine
80s country-rock is a bit cringe, but Bonnie Rait gets five stars just for being so cool.
Also awesome!
lovely
A friend of mine she cries at night
Quite the Pop-Rock Album. I liked it.
Bonnie raitt has a great sound.
Not bad, nice voice. Some songs slightly too country but overall I would listen again.
I like this. Maybe it's the pleasant voice or the strong and meaningful lyrics. The lyrics are delivered in a meaningful and emotional way. I get why this would get on someone's nerves if overplayed, but I think that is not the intended vision for this as was with so much of pop of today. I think it just happened to be replayable and enjoyable. Surprisingly for me, I enjoyed the pop songs more than I enjoyed the blues songs. Both were fitting though and I liked the combination. The really meaningful song was the title song and the lyrics really hit me. Damn the passage of time. But wait, there is a happy ending in acceptance and a bit of delusion.
3.5 rounding up.
Damn bitch keeps it real
I'm not sure if Bonnie Raitt needs much of an introduction as an acclaimed singer-songwriter. But the period of time leading up to this particular record deserves an explanation. After getting dropped by Warner Bros. Records after poor commercial performances for two albums in a row, Bonnie was in a spiral - she dissolved her backing band when she could no longer afford them, she promoted a record that she had no control over, she split profits with the label that just dropped her, she excessively dranked and partied, and she was hospitalized for two months after a skiing accident. It came to a point where she had to stop and reflect on her choices. After attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and sobering up, she resorted to playing acoustic versions of her songs for solo performances. At that point, she crossed paths with musician Don Was of the band Was (Not Was) and started collaborating with him. After they finally found a label willing to work with them, Bonnie and Don got to work on that next record. That record, Nick of Time, would go on to be Bonnie Raitt's commercial breakthrough, after nearly twenty years in the business. I think the magic of this record lies in Bonnie's impressive contralto voice, loving yet firm with the kind of worldly experience that lets her take command of these rootsy blues-rock tunes. Her presence is established on the opening title track, as she reflects on the people around her aging with such earnestness in her observations. That song and the closing drifter tune, "The Road's My Middle Name", feel like genuinely well-written tracks with her wisened expertise, while the songs from other writers in the middle of the record were nicely picked to match her vibe with warm guitar tones throughout. If I had to complain, I'd admit that this album sounds dated in a few places, such as the keyboard tones used on "Love Letter", "Cry On My Shoulder", and "Have a Heart". Don Was did a fine enough job on production; the album can't help but feel a tad schmaltzy as commercially viable music in 1989. It still sounds good for coming out of that time, though. All in all, Nick of Time proved to be a really good comeback record for Bonnie Raitt, and her star would continue to burn bright from this point onward.
First time listening to whole album. It’s uplifting and enjoyable. More important to Bonnie’s career rejuvenation than must listen. 0 songs added to playlist.
This was a fun bluesy-rock album. It fell into the background for the most part, but I found myself humming along regardless.
I actually really enjoyed it, never listened to her before
I think BR has a great voice and she was an icon for a handful of years in the late 80's and early 90's. "Nick Of Time", "Thing Called Love" (all over the radio, always covered), "Love Letter" & "Have A Heart" were big hits for her. She had that strong woman thing going on, guys respected her cause she was older, could rip on guitar and wasn't just a balladeer. Solid listener counts up and down the song list. Nearly every tune is over 1M listens with the title song topping out at 28M. It was definitely a popular album and not one dimensional. I didn't feel compelled to skip any tracks (out side of "I Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again"). Hearing "Have a Heart" again was nice, that's a lovely song. Influence, hit songs, chick-power, and longevity. I'd give this a 3.75 but I'll round up.
It might have been a bit of gamble to call in Don Was but it paid dividends in album sales and ubiquity in the culture. A little slick and not as bright as her earlier albums, but a strong album for sure.
often sounds like 1989. so dated, but that’s not it’s fault. and Raitt is a badass guitarist (…which probably should have been showcased more)
Pretty good album. Sounds phenomenal in that late-80s way.
A voice that carries a shot of whiskey and a dab of honey. And a guitar that curates a fantastic cocktail.
I love you, Bonnie Raitt.
One of the greatest slide guitar players ever. Full stop. She damn sure belongs on this list. I would have picked Give It Up from 1971. Or maybe Songs from the Rainbow Room 1972. Her version of Angel From Montgomery is an absolutely perfect song. From this album, The Road's My Middle Name is my pick. I've seen her live four times. Excellent every time. Wait...is she the artist I've seen live the most? Maybe? Hmm, that never occurred to me until right now.
All these years later and this album feels like a Master class - Bonnie!!!!! Kick ass musician and woman, love her. Our mom loved Nick of Time, played it alllll the time when it came out - opening track is just beautiful.
Silky voice, sassy attitude, strong slide guitar playing. She paved the way for so many female country crossover artists.
I grew up with some of these songs and I love her voice. This album def does the trick for me and it is immaculately produced and made
Wonderful. Love her voice.
An amazing album.l I always love listening to women led soft rock! ‘Love Letter’, ‘Nobody’s Girl’ ‘Thing Called Love’ are my favourites from this project Rating: 4/5 GEMV (28.04.2026)
flexible and well-placed vocals and very good bass work anchor an album that's performed *extremely* well. definitely not my favorite genre of lyrics, but the delivery sells em anyways.
Fantastic Album!
Raittisen Bonniehan laitto sieltä ihan okei bluussahtavaa rokkia tulemaan. Hyvää kamaa.
Classic. Lots of great songs from a true star
79/100.
Excellent girl album, great vocals, great guitar & instrumentals. Great all around ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Surprisingly really really enjoyed this. Great songcraft, catchy, good slide guitar work. Terrible 80s production of course, but eh it's a sign of the times
This SLAPS!! 4.
I much prefer the up tempo songs but the album as a whole is quite good. 4 stars or B+.
Very solid. Need to give it another listen
I was 7 years old when this came out. I had no tapes of my own to listen to and so I was at the mercy of whatever my parents decided to put on. This album was part of my mom’s motivational Saturday morning cleaning lineup along with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Emmylou Harris, and Lorrie Morgan. I’m very familiar with it. My cousin and I made up a dance to Have a Heart, which I’m sure would have knocked the socks off of any one of you. This album is a product of its time for sure but Bonnie Raitt is a talented musician. She’s definitely secured her place as one of the greats. And look how she’s pointing at her enormous belt buckle on the cover. She knows she’s hot. What a blast from the past this was. I enjoyed every minute of it.
I really enjoyed this album. I liked the blues influence on most songs
Fun album, and some songs I immediately recognized. Don’t think I’ve even listened to a Bonnie Raitt song in decades, so definitely a bit of nostalgia here.
I really like this album. As an 80’s girl it brought back memories and it felt nostalgic. The blend of blues, rock and 8o’s synth worked for me. This album starts at so strong with the first four tracks being really good while bringing variety. I also really enjoyed nobody’s girl. I will definitely be adding some of these tracks to my favorites playlists so I can listen more often.
Decent 4. This was such a great album. Bonnie has a fantastic voice and it showcased beautifully on this album. I loved the range of songs, but especially loved “Nick of Time” and “Nobody’s Girl.” I thought there were a couple of songs that were lyrically a little cheesy (“Real Man” especially), so that’s why it doesn’t get a full 5 stars from me, but this is definitely my favorite album so far.
Not afraid to channel my inner-soccer-mom-circa 1989 to enjoy this
Soulful
Love this.
seems pretty lost to the sands of time and also not necessarily the kind of thing thats Cool to rediscover for current music nerds...fairly slick 80s balladry (tho certainly not as overproduced as it could be) mixed with fairly slick 80s white girl blues rock. still i cant deny i rly enjoyed it...its quality Mom Music with a lot of pathos and personality...even before reading a bit more about it, it made sense this was a bit of a recovery album both personally and commercially. and even with the 80s production flourishes, theres a surprising amount of muscle to both the vocals and guitar playing. nothing revelatory but very pleasant!!!
I was a little surprised at how much I enjoyed this. It fell into a bit of routine by the end, but always easy to like and tasty stuff sprinkled in, and a couple of standout tunes.
Beautiful if a bit melancholy. But love her voice and those songs!
I had no negative thoughts about Ms. Raitt but this was better than I expected
Huge Bonnie Raitt fan. This was her well deserved commercial breakthrough record. Not her best one but still a good record
Nick of Time is quite enjoyable. When this came out, 14, almost 15 year old me would have said “Who the F is Bonnie Raitt?!?” She was not for the youthful version of me with rock n’ roll fire and power pop heart in his little gay soul. She’s for the grizzled, worn down late middle-aged person who still holds out hope but has the emotional scars to prove they’ve lived and seen some shit, and is still here putting one foot in front of the other each and every day. Curiously, this came out one day after Like A Prayer by Madonna. Totally different vibes, but two women existing in a male dominated music industry, loudly blasting out at their peak creativity. Girl power!!
Really enjoyed Loved her vibe Accidentally listened to the whole album twice without realising and really enjoyed it Because I had started the album, the foxy song being Nick Of Time, but wanted to que a song for when it finished so I knew when it was done. So I re~added the album as a que to add the song I wanted at the end. Once that song end a couple others I added finished, the album played again minus the first song as I was already listening to it so didn’t need to re~add it to the que. So big win to Bonnie Raitt 4 Stars 8th Of January
First song is really goods. On my badass list she is a prime minister. Can make that guitar squeak. (Seen her at SRV tribute). Overall good album.
I would have given this album 5 stars, but there's a lot of bluegrass/country influence throughout, which I don't like. The rest of the songs are really good though, and her voice is gorgeous!
The Good: We made it, just! The Bad: We aren’t certain where we made it to… The Ugly: Sorry Bonnie… the hair… for fuck’s sake, get a stylist… Almost 2 months have gone by since this album was presented to me, and the only real excuse that I have for having taken so long to rate this album is due to me not being certain what rating I should give the album. This is, without a doubt, icon of the ‘90s sound… slightly over produced, yet trying to get back to analog sound without making it feel like a garage recording. What really stands out is that Bonnie, being a great guitar player, is an even greater singer, yet she never really made it big… maybe because she switched style at a bad moment? After all, RnB blues was popular in movies, but not on the radio, where C&W was popular with the cowboy crowd and starting to gain traction outside of shit-kickin’ bars… Anyway, I guess what I am trying to say is that this album should get a 3* rating… yet, I enjoyed it too much to just brush it off as an okay album… Bonnie gives me something to talk about! 4*
Some nice songs, good guitar playing, nice voice, I need to listen to more of her stuff.
Nice and chill. 4/5
Great album. Love Bonnie Raitt
I've always liked Bonnie Raitt. She has an amazing voice and style all her own. I wasn't familiar with any other the songs on this album though. That said, I listened all the way through and enjoyed each song. I was just a really nice listen. Just to calibrate, if I listen to every song on an album without skipping any, that's 4-5 stars for me. Bonnie gets 4 stars.
Since I'm familiar with this singer, today was a pleasant musical surprise. The album was a magical blending of Bonnie's gravelly voice, steady beats, and rhythmic melodies. Best song: "Too Soon To Tell" and Worst song: "Real Man"
Coming in I had low expectations. It exceeded them, by a mile. I enjoyed it, she has a great voice.
The song Nick of Time is bloody amazing. I’m not a big country fan but I will make an exception for Bonnie Raitt.
I mean, I dont really get the hate it is kinda gorge, the melodies are catchy and her voice stellar. Sure it's not super innovative and it kinda lacks ambition to truly be great, but it is well made and well done.
bueni my kind of vibe de estos ultimos tiempos
Swanky. 4/5
Oooooh this'll be interesting. My parents weren't big Bonnie Raitt fans but you couldn't avoid this woman in the late 80s/early 90s. Oh my god "Love Letter" is the most 1980s thing I've ever heard in my life. Incredible. "Have a Heart!" I remember this one. Kinda reggae. Lots of reverb on her voice - it sounds amazing. Her slide playing is excellent on every track. None of this is bad. It just sounds very middle of the road 35 years later. It's really growing on me as I get further and further into it, though. Ok so this won the 1989 Album of the Year at the Grammy's. I was surprised, so I looked it up and the other nominees that year were Don Henley, Fine Young Cannibals, Tom Petty, and the Traveling Wilburys. So Bonnie fits right in with whatever the hell was going on in '88/89. I just checked the reviews for this one and good God - poor Bonnie! Getting ripped to shreds. Hey I don't get it - ya'll LOVE Tracy's Chapman's boring-ass record from the year before, but no love for Bonnie? Ya know what? Ya'll are some spiteful motherfuckers. FOUR STARS
Listened to this velvet-voiced singer quite a bit in the '80s and early '90s, especially her Luck of the Draw album in '91. This was her break out album. Includes singles Nick of Time and Thing Called Love.
Surprisingly quite enjoyed it. Had never heard anything by Bonnie Raitt before and it was not what I expected.
Great voice
sympa
4 stars for nostalgia
Today I learned that Bon Iver's "can't make you love me / nick of time" is a cover of not one but TWO songs by Bonnie Raitt, and I would like to file my formal apology that I did not know of this wonderful lady and her incredible artistry. Thanks to Bonnie Raitt and for this list for doing exactly what it's supposed to do today. :)
Really must be enjoying the blues tonight because I enjoyed this album. I remembered more songs than I thought I knew from it. I almost wonder if my dad might have had it since so much was familiar, but I have no idea.
I like earlier Bonnie Raitt more but this was a great listen.
For what this is, this is great - it's a solid pop record with fantastic songwriting and performances from Bonnie Raitt. As a Brit I'd never heard of her before today, but I enjoyed this enough to listen again and check out another album by her. Only real negative for me is that the production and overall sound feels dated even for the time period - there was some really good pop from this period which stood the test of time and this one is definitely a record from 1989.
Bonnie has a beautiful voice and showcases it well on this album. I like how she has a very controlled and restrained performance but somtimes adds in the grit when needed, like at 2:08 on "Too Soon To Tell". The compositions are also pretty solid, but I think definitely lag behind her in quality; she's really the star here. Kind of an odd thing to highlight, but I really like the tempos (tempi?) on this album. They are all just slightly slower than I expect once I get into the meat of the songs (for example I'll be listening and think "ah this one has a tough confidence to it, I'm surprised they didnt go for 5-10bpm faster"), but I jive with it while listening today. It's like these songs were written at a regular tempo but then they said "let's slow it just slightly and make it hit harder with more punctuated performances... more wham in the bass drum, more whack in the snare, and more vibrato in the new space we made". It's kind of weird to put into words but it makes sense to me? The Wikipedia page for this record is a nice read, and I was surprised to learn that this was her 10th studio album and really her first commercial breakthrough. That's an amazing resilience. Solid 4/5. I haven't listened to her too much but this was a delight.
Thought her voice was amazing and the songs were nice and varied if occasionally a bit cheesy. Would definitely listen again. Fav song: Too Soon To Tell Least fav: I Ain’t Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again
Just a classic 80s love song album. She’s got a really good voice and the songs are fairly varied so I quite liked this one. Specific rating- 4.1 Fav song- Nick of time Least fav- the roads my middle name
Great voice and great collection of love songs! Favourite: Thing Called Love Least: I Will Not Be Denied
Surprisingly good, really enjoyed this
Listened to most of it but not all. Love Bonnie and several songs but wasn’t holding my attention as a play through album, perhaps I just wanted a different mood.
Reminds me of my auntie Yvette’s love of Bonnie Raitt. Was quite enjoyable
Mostly really good blues rock classics, with sadly a couple of snoozers thrown in.
The title track is great, everything else is pretty good. Music in this genre from this era can easily sound corny in retrospect but this mostly stands the test of time.
Yet another with a barrage of hate. Ah well. I like Bonnie, she has a melancholy, soothing voice. This is a good album. Not as groundbreaking as her single "I Can't Make You Love Me", but good nonetheless. A good mix of blues, country and pop. Pleasurable experience.
Very polished pop rock
Bonnie Raitt was huge in the '90s, and I didn’t pay much attention. However, you couldn’t get away from her, as I seem to remember hearing a couple of songs off of this huge album, Nick of Time, including the title track and Thing Called Love. Ordinarily, I’d be programmed to hate this with a passion. It’s essentially everything I dislike. It’s tepid Eric Claptonish pop blues music from the '90s. But, despite my efforts to hate, I couldn’t help but love most of the album. There are cringe parts located in it, the funky bass popping that you hear in ’80s music is in a few songs. One song, Have a Heart, sounds like it could be in any number of 80s romantic comedies, perhaps Weekend at Bernie’s. Holy crapballs! I just googled it, and it was in a little-seen Bob Hoskins and Denzel Washington movie called Heart Conditions from 1990. Heart Conditions also stars CT from Magnum P.I. and Willona from Good Times. Damn, that sounds like a good movie. According to IMDB, “a racist cop receives a heart transplant from a black lawyer he hates, who returns as a ghost to ask the cop to help take down the men who murdered him.” Now that is pure '90s gold. A buddy cop movie with a black ghost and a white racist cop. How was that not a hit? I’m digressing horribly. The more I listen to this album, the more I really love it. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe I’m just a fool for the blues, I don’t know why, but there’s enough good stuff to outweigh the cheese. At one point, I was listening to the album while I was working and the song Nobody’s Girl got me. Like I thought I was going to start squirting tears right there in front of the Mac-Mini. Maybe it’s because I know Raitt’s backstory, she was dropped from her label and left for dead so she turned to drugs and booze and food and kind of gave up. She then straightens up and explodes. It’s a feel-good story and this album seems very personal. I may look like a serial killer, but I’m a big softie at heart and Ms. Raitt got me. At the end of the day, I even grew to enjoy Have a Heart. I can see why Nick of Time is in the 1,001 albums to hear list because it’s an album that makes you feel something and you don’t get that from today’s music much.
Good combination of blues rock and country from a very talented singer/musician.
Nice,
Much of this is meh to middling, but good for her winning a Grammy and plenty of acclaim (commercial and critical). Title track is tops here, followed by "Have a Heart" and "Too Soon To Tell" Thank you for your service, Don Was. Early records are much more deserving but easy to round up for lifetime achievement reasons.
Delicious rock from a great singer and guitar player. A pleasant album for once. I can hear why it went to the Billboard #1.
This is pretty cool. Felt like a lot of the best parts of the female country powerhouses.
I love Bonnie’s voice.
To my mind, this is a solid four-star album, and I will probably revisit at some point. But I don't find anything special enough to make me want it in my collection.
I didn't know what to expect going into this. I didn't know the artist or what type of genre to expect. There were a couple of songs that really stood out to me, and overall it made for light hearted, easy listening
I never really thought of myself as a Bonnie Raitt fan. I knew a few of her big hits, but this album showed me she had way more talent than I gave her credit for. Right out of the gate, the title track “Nick of Time” plays like a yacht rock style banger, smooth and polished, then she flips it immediately into Southern rock with “Thing Called Love.” That one really stood out, especially because she absolutely tears it up on slide guitar. I can always respect a guitarist who knows their way around a slide, and she nails it. The musicianship across the record is impressive on its own, but the guest list makes it even stronger. Having Herbie Hancock, David Crosby, and Graham Nash involved adds some serious star power, and you can feel the quality shine through in the arrangements and production. This album has a nice mix of polish and grit, and it gave me a new appreciation for Raitt outside of the singles I was already familiar with. It’s the sound of an artist really stepping into her prime, and she makes it look easy. Favorite song: Nick of Time
Liked this. Bonnie Raitt is fashionable again because of the new wave of c&w and rock.
Really like this one and such an inspiration for a lot of music I like that has come out since then.
Very tasteful, with that VH1 sheen, but the songs and the singing are impressive .
I guess I must’ve had this album because I knew every song. It is a winner. Beautiful voice, great lyrics. Nick of Time has got to be the best song of all time about early middle age.
Was very surprised by this. Expecting some country-rock/pop, with maybe one good song, but the album proved to be very dynamic, with a number of tracks that are worth saving.
For me (and possibly thanks to VH1), Cash and Raitt are pretty much the only tolerable artists who dabble in the dark arts (i.e. country, folk, and blues). This album has a few forgettable misses, but there's more good than bad, overall.
She wants a 🗣️Real 🗣️ Man 🗣️
In a year of comeback records, Bonnie Raitt's Nick of Time may have become the most forgotten of them all these past few years, which is a pity given how at ease she sounds with the sounds of the time blending in with her patented blues guitar styling. A true to hell and back tale, Nick of Time details the complexities of love hardwon and life hard-lived, for which Bonnie has plenty of experience dealing. This record could stand as a crutch to get through difficulties in effort to ultimately get going again, just like its creator did. Favorites: Nick of Time, Thing Called Love, Love Letter, Cry on My Shoulder, Real Man, Have a Heart, I Will Not Be Denied, I Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart.
Such an 80s vibe. But one I like. I think I might give more Bonnie a try.
I know it's a little cheesy and boring at times, but I'm a little cheesy and boring at times.
Very good album that finally got Bonnie Raitt the attention she deserved. More poppy and a little less bluesy than some of her albums, but very well produced with a more modern feel.
I thought she was awesome before and still think so now having heard this. Great blend of blues and pop and an awesome voice. There are a couple of clunkers on here giving it a dated 80's feel in spots but overall I really enjoyed this.
Nice easy going music. Nothing challenging.
For a genre I'm not fond of, this album was great!
I think a lot of people miss what’s special about this album on here. Yeah, the production didn’t age well but Bonnie Raitt at least works as a unique lyricist on familiar song settings an industry filled with cliches.
Solid album start to finish.
Wait this is kind of really good, not quite 5 material, but dam I kinda like this womans vibe
Look at that hai!. No question that Raitt is the real deal.
Fantastic album!
the goat, THE GOAT
A good album, I liked Thing Called Love and Nobody's Girl the most.
I liked this a lot more than i expected to after seeing all of the bad reviews. The lyrics can be corny at times but still such a fun album. Although I might be biased as I love country and country-adjacent music. Top Tracks: Love Letter, Too Soon To Tell, Nick Of Time
Maybe a guilty pleasure...but I'm a Bonnie Raitt fan.
Favorite songs: Thing Called Love, The Road's My Middle Name, Real Man, Love Letter, I Will Not Be Denied, Nobody's Girl Least favorite songs: Cry on My Shoulder 4/5
Bonnie Raitt was very successful. Her album was unable to strike a chord with me. Wolf
Four seriously unbelievable good songs and the rest are a bit sleepy. Bonnie is still the Queen
I’m not the 30-60-year-old-middle-class woman demographic on whose concerns this album focusses (a slightly different group than the subject of her most famous song, “Angel from Montgomery”). But the songs are obviously great — lyrically, musically, and vocally. The songwriting artfully (though narrowly) skirts sappy sentimentality and stereotypes. And Raitt’s vocals and guitar playing are superb. The album holds together as a single work of art. My only reservation is that the album seems overproduced— I’d like to hear these songs as an acoustic set live, without the synthetic drum tracks and vocal backing chorus. I’ll always welcome a Bonnie Raitt song though — so it’s a 4.
23/03/25 I enjoyed this album.
An enjoyable listen. It had a great mix of rock, blues, ballads and country tracks. It sounds very 80s and maybe isn't quite as novel as some of the other albums on here but it has solid songwriting, production and performances front to back.
Good writing, good variety of sound and mood, really good guitar and great vocals. Terrific stuff.
Nick of Time was the tenth studio album from Bonnie Raitt, and her commercial breakthrough after a long run of critically - but not commercially - successful albums. Her rich vocals are the central element of her guitar driven, blues-based rock. The album had successful singles with "Thing Called Love," "Have a Heart," and the title track, and won a handful of Grammys, including Album of the Year. It changed the trajectory of Raitt's career, making her into a star.
4/5. She feels very collected and to the point, not like she is half-hearted in your energy, but more that she is an expert in her craft. And it took me halfway through the album to even question if she wrote these songs or not. They feel so close to her vocal style and tone that she takes command of each song. And it's country but has a general blues sound and even some R&B and funk. I wouldn't say every song is great or for me but it's hard to deny the expertise here. Best Song: Nick Of Time, Real Man, Nobody's Girl
Vibey I like
Skönt bluesigt sväng, härligt raspig sång. Klar fyra!
Love this woman’s voice. So easy and soulful. She’s got that natural storyteller energy. The band is tight. The production is immaculate. Pretty great overall.
her voice is perfect. a beautiful late 80s time capsule
Never realized before just how much Bonnie Raitt and Sheryl Crow sound alike at times, but Bonnie is a bit more soulful I think
Call me basic, but I thought this was pretty swell. Catchy tunes and a great voice.
So this album had me looking up Grammy winners from the last 40 some yrs. Almost forgot this picked up a win. She had other nominations too after this one. She was up against one of my favorite albums of all time(Full Moon Fever), and another one I was listening to at the time(End of the Innocence). Personally I would have picked Full Moon Fever, as it holds up better today as timeless. That doesn't take away from what this album is and was...it had great playing and songs. But top to bottom a couple were cheesy. Have a Heart always seemed manufactured to me. It didn't feel like that one fit her style. Nick of Time and thing called love are just incredible. They both come in at 3:52!? I just saw Herbie Hancock on TV last week and he played on track 10 here. Also shout out to the Traveling Wilburys that year, another nomination for album of the year.
You know what, it's not my genre but this was really easy listening. really good voice, chill instruments, here for that this eve.
Bonnie Raitt has this little niche sound that I think only she does well. The only thing I can really compare is Love Letter reminds me of Joe Cocker and Leave Your Hat On. Outside that it hits this nice middle ground of not quite country or pop rock, but its all pretty good.
Great country album. It’s clearly not the even close to same genre anymore.
Really really enjoyed this! Thanks to Justin Vernon and Charlotte Aitchison for introducing me to the title track. Bonnie is one of those artists I've been meaning to explore in time - very glad I did. Usual critiques about the album being all over the place in terms of what part of the relationship is described from one track to the next, but the majority of the tracks were very heartfelt and the lyrics were sublime. Will return to this! 4.5* rounded down to 4
If this were just a little bit less about men, is want it playing at the old school lesbian cruiser bar
Byrjaði sem mjög áhlustanleg kántrýplata en endaði svo í algjörri blúsrokkveislu sem hreif mig á sitt band. Ég var næstum í þristinum en lokin á plötunni toga hana upp í fjórar því ég fílaði seinni hlutann það mikið. Bonnie fer aftur í spilun
At last, after a run of 21 albums, a female artist. Not an album I am familiar but quite like it. It's got an easy going Fleetwood Mac vibe. Good blend of bluesy, country and moody tracks for late night listening. However, no real big hitters on this but a merciful break from the early nineties grunge/guitar noise dominated albums that I have recenty endured. More an album that is a sum of its parts and 4 stars for me.
The raw sexism in some of these replies is really something to read. Lotsa little boys in these comments bothered by a woman singing about...being a woman. Raitt's voice, of course, is just gorgeous. And she's a hell of a slide player without being overly showy. Unfortunately, the album's production is typical overly compressed late 80's (at least they don't have a ton of gated drums). It's mellow and lovely. Just roll with it. And pull your heads out of your asses, boys.
Enjoyed this more than i'd like to admit
I love her
So many points for Nick of Time. The rest is lovely.
pretty melodies and amazing ballads. what a voice
That's fine.
Simple, bluesy, fun.
She's got some kinda comforting soul to her. Like country blues but tweaked, can't quite describe it.
This reminded me that I should listen to Bonnie more. Such feel good music.
Bonnie has a few good songs, but not a whole album of good songs
Ended up enjoying this just fine. Not really something I would listen to otherwise. But I liked it.
She seems like a very nice lady
wow she looks a lot like dominique dipierro from mr robot, did she time travel?
Really enjoyed that. Beginning to think I’m just a Country boy at heart…
Can’t let gang know I fw this, wonderful 80’s soft pop w/ just a hint of twang, super cool.
Ah, Bonnie Raitt. She had that magic power, possessed by few, to sing words that sound truer sung than spoken. There's something about her lyrics that are so simple, plain, and just ring out in her voice. I don't really know how it works, how you get that ability. But she's got it. And that makes her lines cut to the core more than most. She's also straddling this line on most of the songs– they're definitely commercial, but not overly. A production style of a certain time– plenty of Prince influence here, which I was surprised by– but never too much. Never so much to distract from her performance and her delivery, her gift. I love it and I love her. 4/5
Very good album. Hadn't heard much from her before, but she has a nice voice and a bluesy rock feel. I had expected more of a country sound but was pleasantly surprised.
I couldn’t tell you how this album stacks up to other Bonnie Raitt albums, but that’s only because there is nothing about her that should have connected with me when I was eight years old and she was releasing albums. I’ve always thought there was something fairly Nancy Meyers-esque about her music. But I like Nancy Meyers, even if I’m not the target audience. Same goes with Bonnie Raitt. Great blues/country-ish music. Great album.
I liked it more than expected, sometimes a bit middle of the road. Great songs and performance though
Nice
This was a huge album for my mom when I was growing up, and listening to it now it's clearly easy listening meets country.
Nice
Held back a bit by the 80s production
So talented! It's so eclectic! Soulful and country and jazz and awesome guitar playing!!! Telling stories. Love her.
Good ole time country rnr!
Great blues/rock album. An amazingly expressive voice.
This was a pleasant throwback to my middle school years when Bonnie Raitt was EVERYWHERE. This was a good listen. More nostalgic than I was expecting it to be. I knew the radio hits but this was enjoyable and fun, but also quiet and gentle in just the right way. Great album.
Just a really enjoyable AOR/Blues album. Another one that just sounded in the background and kinda bland, but I liked everything i heard.
Bonnie Raitt has always been synonymous with I Can't Make You Love Me in my mind. And then I listened to this album and realized that Miss Bonnie can rock it! This is really good '80s pop rock that kinda bleeds into '90s vibes too. After this record I found out that she also did Something to Talk About - one of those songs you forget about but as soon as you hear it again, you instantly remember how much you enjoy it. Nick of Time gave off that feeling a lot too. Within seconds of a song starting you instantly fall in love with it. Standouts are Nick of Time, Love Letter, and I Will Not Be Denied.
My mom loved this album and I didn't realize how many good memories it would bring up. I can't rate it objectively.
Wow her voice is incredible. I am also just completely blown away by her guitar playing. It's a lot of slide stuff, and I think a lot of open tuning to make that easier, but holy smokes she just knows how to make everything feel so gritty and dirty and bluesy. There are a couple of really big tracks here -> Thing Called Love, Love Letter, and the inimitable Have A Heart (which holds so much nostalgia for me personally). To me this is the epitome of 80s Dad Rock blues/country/rock-n-roll fusion with pop structure and production - and it is /SO/ fantastic. With that said her next record Luck Of The Draw would maybe have been a better pick for this list. If it weren't for all the cheesy 80's synth-keys this would be a 5-star rating no problem. There are some really great songs hiding behind some sounds that are a tiny bit offensive to modern listeners with high fidelity streaming and fancy headphones (as opposed to an FM broadcast or Cassette in Grampy's LTD which is what it was produced for...). I think a modern remix of this album would do it some good.
Who doesn’t love a great comeback story? Being broke and newly sober will bring you some clarity, that’s for sure. Just listen to the title track: “When did the choices get so hard With so much more at stake? Life gets mighty precious When there's less of it to waste Mm, mm Scared you'll run out of time” Yeah, Bonnie got her shit together and made a great record … So many great songs that haven’t aged one bit.
not exactly to my taste but solid album. I owned this in the early 90s during a period where I owned only a boom box and a few cassettes and this was one of them so I listened to it a lot more than I would have otherwise.
Nick Of Time – 4 Thing Called Love – 4 Love Letter – 4 Cry On My Shoulder – 3.5 Real Man – 4.5 Nobodies Girl – 4.5 Have A Heart – 4 Too Soon To Tell – 4 I Will Not Be Denied – 3 I Aint Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again – 4 The Roads My Middle Name – 4 Average - 3.95 I quite enjoyed this 👍
Thing Called Love.
It has that certain late 80's charm, thanks to the production backing up her great vocals.
Other than being bald, the one characteristic I shared with the late David Crosby is that we both find Bonnie Raitt to be our favorite singer, period. This isn't my personal favorite album of hers, but any work by Bonnie beats the crap out of anything else this record club has turned up thus far. Thank you!
“Thing Called Love” is a poppy hit, “Nobody’s Girl” is a great song
Enjoyable, 7/10
Easy listening Like lyrics "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"
Pretty class actually
Out of the gate with some cheesy 80's keys and a restrained bassline. Certain cheese factor on display here, but it is very calm and beautiful in its own right. Oddly I could imagine this opening up into a fat jam during a live show. Once again, seeing some strong jam potential on Thing Called Love. Country twang with some serious dub influences during the instrumental interlude. This is a surprise jam. Man, Nobody's Girl is a really pretty song. So simple, but the vocals are really nice against the stripped down acoustic pairing. Back to that dub influence on Have A Heart. Album ends on a pretty classic Country Blues romp with The Road's My Middle Name. This was another pleasant surprise. Not something I would have picked out for myself, but I can see why it is here. Bonnie Raitt puts together a well-produced and varied album with strong vocals across all 11 tracks. She leans into some of the influences du jour (cheesy synths on Nick Of Time, dub a la Police on Have a Heart and Thing Called Love) and does them well. This was solid straight through and I would absolutely listen again. 4 / 5
Soft 4. Really liked this album. Bonnie is extremely talented, beautiful voice. Makes it easy listening.
Wasn’t sure at first, but was fully on board by the end of it. I need these rhythms in my soul
I loved her voice! First female artist in an album omg
Better than I expected, "the road's my middle name" is great
Fun bluesy album
Pretty good album! I liked it. Probably an 8.5/10 for me.
This rating is sponsored by my childhood nostalgia©
Laid-back and lovely, but also mellow to the point of timidity and blandness, shading into easy listening territory. Some cheesy '80s keys, too, which don't quite ruin everything, and the three high-profile cuts compensate for a lot. The early records are much better. Rounding up as a form of lifetime achievement award and because she's very easy to root for.
Thing Called Love.
“Thing called love” was the stand out track. Very pop country. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would have. 3.5 stars rounded up.
So many great songs on this album. I listen to this one fairly often. Big fan of Raitt.
Pretty good. profound opinion not created yet, but I like it. It has this nice elvisy, Memphis/Nashville sound.
"Nick Of Time," earned Bonnie three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. The album's title track, "Nick Of Time," is a standout example of Raitt's songwriting prowess. The song's poignant lyrics and driving guitar riffs explore themes of love, loss, and the passage of time. Other notable tracks on the album include "I Can't Make You Love Me," a heartbreaking ballad that became a pop hit, and "Thing Called Love," a blues-rock anthem with a catchy melody and infectious energy. Throughout the album, Raitt's masterful guitar playing complements her vocals.
Can’t complain, great from start to finish, Although the first track is my favourite 4/5
Don’t know how I haven’t listened to this before but wow what an album - 8.5
Bonnie is so underrated. I even forget how much I like her sometimes. She's just pure and clean.
Nice bluesy/americana voice, perfect for the genre and overall a good album.
4.25
This one is tough, because I love Bonnie. Her music is extremely listenable and pleasant. These songs would fit on any adult alternative or easy listening radio, and seem prime as karaoke choices. And her voice is fantastic, strong and a little smoky. But it's not exactly reinventing the wheel, is it? Pretty torn between 3 and 4 stars on this one, but it's just so...competent? Damning it with faint praise, perhaps, but I'm rounding up to 4.
Classic
Good Americana. Raitt is a legend for a reason. Very easy and peaceful listen.
Great production and a solid vocal performance with a good diversity in songs.
A nice and most welcome surprise to find some blues rock amongst all these faceless albums lately. No super great but enjoyable nonetheless
I liked it. Very mellow magic.
A few slow songs but a lot of good ones too
I was expecting an album full of country music songs based off the cover, and while there’s a couple present, what we mainly get is a lovely selection of MOR and pop songs about love, disappointment, and aging, sung (and played – check out that slide guitar action) superbly by Raitt and produced just as nicely by Don Was. This is a wonderful little album that totally confounded my expectations.
really enjoyed this
Just a powerful album with amazing vocals and production, could easily be a 5 out of 5 if I listen to it more. Favorite Tracks: Nick Of Time, Thing Called Love, Nobody's Girl, Too Soon To Tell, I Ain't Gonna Let You Break My Heart Again
Quite impressed by this lady. The songs are solid, good vocal melodies, nice song progressions. Definitely someone worth keeping an eye one! 7,5 out of 10
Pretty solid album. I can see why it was popular. I don't especially love it myself. Rating is a little hard though. I'd give it a 3 or 3.5 but giving it a 3 seems too low. It seems worthy of a 4 even though I will almost certainly never revisit this
Nice
I’m conflicted. Her voice is an absolute 5; Susan Tedeschi mixed with Sara Watson. It’s gritty and really becomes ethereal. The 80s synth pop is what gets me, really takes from what could be a raw soft rock singer-songwriter album. I suppose I like some songs and dislike others, but I would own this and rotate it. Truly a 3.5
Good. Still prefer earlier stuff but solid album.
I was a bit nervous when this one came up, having never heard of her before. But I was very happily surprised by how awesome this album was. A fantastic surprise.
Pretty surprising how much I enjoyed listening to this, great voice, catchy tunes
I was listening to this album while writing a paper for my biology class that I, coincidentally, submitted in the “Nick of Time”. This doesn’t really have anything to do with my ranking if the album, but I though it was cool. The album was nice. The lyrics were beautiful and reflective in a genre that tends to get bogged down in cliches. The songs were fun to listen to and didn’t get boring, which is always a plus. I don’t think any of it was incredibly original, apart from the words she sang, however I liked it. 4/5
Americana, rock, blues rock. Agradable. Venga, un 4.
Cool
Rock, blues.
She has such a smooth and relatable voice, which saves what is otherwise an awkward mix of 80's syth pop and mainstream country.
Maybe the production is too slick and of its time but her tender delivery sells the songs so well I can’t help but be charmed. Opening title track has the gem of a lyric “life gets mighty precious, when there’s less of it to waste”.
cute 80s adult contemporary album it’s basically just 80s pop with a country twist some of the songs felt pretty sexist (both misogyny and misandry) but yeah still fun 7/10
Some old 80s vibes. Decent beat but all very similar for the whole album. Not bad to stick one or two in a mix.
Excellent album. A slightly too-80’s production, like a smooth jazz backing band around her great, smoky voice.
Thing Called Love.
Apparently my mom listened to this a lot after I was born. Not only that, Bonnie Raitt was my very first concert as a baby with cotton stuffed in my ears (slept through most of it apparently). Pretty sure that has something to do with how I feel about this album. It's got a comfort food quality for me. Slick af production, catchy songs. That said, still kinda cheesey sounding at times. It's pop-rock-country from 1989 after all. But it has a lot of charm and heart I feel. Or maybe that's just nostalgia. In either case, it's a solid 4 for me. Will listen again.
I grew up on the singer songwriter sound, and this is pretty top tier as far as that goes. She’s able to cover the 80s powerhouse female while also venturing into the early 90s almost country sound, like Amy Grant. I like this album a lot and think it’s great listening.
Solid
Bonnie Raif’s comeback album is a laidback rock album with strong undercurrents of blues and Americana. The songwriting is strong and the music itself is very of its time, smooth with hints of grit.
I love Bonnie Raitt and this album is one I owned when I used to collect records. Love how she went a mellower groove direction here but her signature grit and realness are still very present. She's a wonderful songwriter, a superb guitarist (too often overlooked in the male-dominated world of rock/pop/blues/country guitarists), and a great vocalist. It all comes together so nicely on this album. I remember the success that came to her thanks to this album, and reading about that again makes me happy. So well deserved.
There were a lot more genres in this than I expected at first glance. It’s still very much typical female folk/country but there’s also like ZZ Top guitars on one track and some blues rock influences on the others. Overall very nice listen
Oui oui c'est super 👍
Enjoyed this! Nice bit of blues and what a voice. Went down well on a drive back from Devon
Enjoyed this a lot. A lovely voice, some good beats. I do enjoy a bit of lady blues, country rock
Accessible blues pop.
decent
Americana, rock, blues rock. Agradable. Venga, un 4.
Thing Called Love.
I don't enjoy these musical styles at all individually (80s pop, country blues, etc.) but something about this combination really works for me.
Great album. 4/5
Pretty great
I do love Bonnie Raitt, just more of her real blues sound. Appreciate how she needed this commercially, just a little toned down for me and feels very 1980's
a grown-up album, warm and tender and wise, which opened the floodgates for the next huge wave of her career
hi- thing called love, have a heart Hey, shut up! Just listen to this album!
I first thought this album was country, and it isn't. It is blues.
A 3 probably. A 4, I love this stuff. Also on this album-cover she's the spitting image of Dom from Mr. Robot but with a sexy, curly 80s haircut.
hi- thing called love, have a heart Hey, shut up! Just listen to this album!
Not my usual choice of listening but can appreciate this pop country gem. I give it higher marks for just how influential it is and mainly for the fact that I enjoyed it a lot. It is Christmas Eve Eve today so this was a nice break from my Xmas song play list. I will come back and listen to this again as it seems like a good soundtrack to kicking back in the summer sun
7/10 good songs but definitely overproduced
7/10. Bluesy and pleasant. Maybe a low 8.
This is an album (tape!) from my childhood. I listened to it so many times... I was singing Have a Heart from memory. The voice, the slide guitar, the lyrics. Bonnie is a blues rock legend for a reason. She gets what it is to be a woman.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Nick of time, Thing called love
Surprising that I liked this album. Really catchy. I always considered her "country" in my mind, but she's really bluesy and I dig it. Will listen to more of her. 3.5/5, but rounding up to a 4.
4/5 - Good, but not for me
Classy 80s American rock
I love her early 70's work, and even most of "Luck Of The Draw". Apparently Bonnie Raitt was going to make an album with Prince before this album, and was even signed to his Paisley Park album before things fell apart. Now THAT'S an album I want to hear. Wondering if THIS should be the Bonnie Raitt album represented on this list. Thinking it's a bit over praised because it won some surprise Grammys. And then I listened to it again, and it makes all the sense in the world why it's here. I still think Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever should have won the Album Of The Year Grammy instead, but this is a great listen.
Very smooth voice. Music is a little smooth jazz/smooth country vibe. Great vocal melodies.
Great relaxed sounds with a good beat
Overall, this album did not disappoint. Highlights are Nick of Time and Love Letter. But I don't think the album has the 'great' factor. Most of it became good background music while I was doing stuff. 4/5 stars.
Nick of Time. What a song. I also like I can’t make you love me but it’s on another album. As far as I’m concerned I’m very excited to delve deeper.
