Album Summary

In Utero is the third and final studio album by American rock band Nirvana, released on September 13, 1993, by DGC Records. After breaking into the mainstream with their second album, Nevermind (1991), Nirvana hired Steve Albini to record In Utero, seeking a more complex, abrasive sound. Recording took place over two weeks in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. Soon after recording was completed, rumors circulated that DGC might not release In Utero due to Albini's abrasive sound. Producer Scott Litt was hired to remix the singles "All Apologies", "Heart-Shaped Box" and "Pennyroyal Tea", upsetting Albini. In Utero was a major commercial and critical success. Critics praised the change in sound and Cobain's lyrics. It reached number one on the US Billboard 200 and UK Albums Chart; "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies" reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The album is certified five-times platinum and has sold 15 million copies. In Utero was the final Nirvana album before Cobain's suicide in 1994. "Pennyroyal Tea", planned as a single prior to Cobain's death, was released in 2014 and reached number one on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales Chart.

Right in my wheelhouse. Loved it when it came out, love it now. My main concert claim to fame was seeing Nirvana the day before Nevermind came out. I heard an advanced copy in a record store, flipped out, and asked the clerk about what I was hearing. We learned they were playing a small club the next night and had to go. It was a great, sloppy show, but I never thought Nirvana would become Nirvana. A friend and I moved to Chicago a few days after the show, and we knew something was up when kept hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit on the radio in random small towns in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, Nevermind is great now, but I remember thinking it was a bit polished for that sloppy band we saw. So when In Utero came out, I loved the interplay between the band's unmistakable gift for melody and their persistence on the raw, aggressive sound. I vividly remember hearing All Apologies for the first time when driving home to Boston from grad school. I thought it sounded like a long lost White Album track. Listening again, the albums sequencing is brilliant, and the whole thing flows much better than I remember. I'm sure I used to skip around on my CD, so my big revelation today is how much this album really works as an album. So fun to catch up with an old friend.

Might be better than Nevermind…

Fantastic

Another one that's only grown on my soul since initially hearing it as a teenager.

In Uteroa kuunnellessa Kurt Cobainin ennenaikainen kuolema on vahvasti läsnä.

Better than Nevermind in just about every conceivable way

One of my favorites of all time, iconic, heavy, melodic. Every song feels both raw and polished at the same time. I love this.

One of the great ones by one of the greatest bands of the 20th century

I sat here listening and glazing every track and I thought 'Yeah I'll give this 4 stars'. No. This is a statement. I can't properly place it. It stands alone. 5 stars.

This was the most popular album in the world when I turned twelve. I was just starting to care about music and it was as sad, angry, and angsty as I was. I don't know if I can ever listen to it completely objectively, divorced from my history with it, but I'm pretty sure it ✅️ STILL BANGS HARD. Fav tracks: Tourette's Rape Me Dumb Very Ape Heart-Shaped Box

!!!!!!!!!!! Some of my faves are on this album. All Apologies and Pennyroyal Tea and Dumb continue to fuck me up beyond repair. Rape Me is iconic. I can’t believe it hasn’t even been a month since Kurt Cobain hijacked my entire brain. It’ll be a month in two days actually since I listened to Unplugged! I know this bc I added the date to my calendar as a yearly anniversary event bc I’m insane 😂 // This is honestly a tough one to rate. Some of the rougher tracks aren’t my vibe in terms of production (by design I suppose) but the ones I love I love almost beyond compare. And all together, it’s just so good. And apparently I’m partial to Scott Litt? He worked with REM yes? Yes. I’m waffling so much, bc screaming drops me to 4 bc am I realistically relistening in full as much as my other five stars? Then I’m like… well I have been relistening over the last month. I can just skip scentless apprentice when I’m not in the mood. And I even love the content of the songs I’d skip. What to do.

Nevermimd will always get the flowers, but this is nirvanas best album. Don’t sleep on Bleach either.

A template album. Not as good as nevermind though

I went into this thinking that a 5 was a given. There are a handful of absolutely fantastic songs here; songs like Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me, Pennyroyal Tea, and All Apologies. The other tracks here though, aren’t ones that I’ll often go to when I’m in the mood to listen to Nirvana.

All a bit the same, again and again

Trades the polished grunge of Nevermind for an uncompromising mix of punk noise and haunting melodies. A powerful farewell from a band at the peak of their power. All Apologies alone takes this into 5* territory.

Overrated noise

I quite enjoyed the delicate balance of noise and melody on earlier Nirvana albums. But for the most part this one is missing the melody... A clear evolution from earlier albums. Just not sure it's a good one. 2*

Rescato Heart-Shaped Box y All apologies. Despues nada wow. 7/10

While I self admittedly always preferred Pearl Jam, there is no denying the influence and pure brilliance of this album. There is not a lost song on this album and while just a small step below Ten in my opinion everyone should listen to this album AT LEAST once in their lifetime.

Glad I got the MTV Unplugged album before this one. Felt like dipping my toes in the boiling hot lava before jumping in. That being said, I still couldn’t give in to this the way I wanted to.

Yeah, ok.

Muito bom

Loved this album.

The best nirvana album

Probably one of, if not the best, Kurt Cobain's best vocal performances. So many great, iconic songs and showcases the depth of the band's talent.

The deliberate anti-Nevermind — Cobain hiring Steve Albini specifically to undo the polish that made them famous, the result raw and abrasive and uncomfortable in ways that major label rock wasn’t supposed to be. Where MTV Unplugged stripped everything back to let the songs stand alone, In Utero buries them in noise and distortion as a philosophical statement about what fame and success had done to the band. Both approaches earn their place; they just earn different ratings. The songs are strong enough to survive the production, which is the real argument for the four. “Heart-Shaped Box” is the opening statement and one of the great Cobain compositions — the quiet-loud dynamic deployed with genuine emotional purpose, the melody underneath the distortion as beautiful as anything on Unplugged. “All Apologies” closes the record with the same stripped vulnerability, the aggression burned off to reveal something that sounds like exhaustion and acceptance simultaneously. “Rape Me” and “Dumb” fill out a landmark track count that carries the rating honestly. The honest ceiling is that the Albini rawness creates distance that the production on Unplugged deliberately removed — very good and very raw is the accurate verdict, the abrasion intentional without always being essential. A four that the hits earn and the production philosophy honestly limits. The Unplugged five set the bar for what Cobain’s songwriting could do when nothing was in the way. This is the same gift wearing different clothes, and the clothes matter.

I used to joke that Very Ape was a Gen X anthem. I felt it summed up my young adulthood in the 90's by a band that broke the 80's pop hold had on radio. When Kurt died I was told he was the voice of his generation. I'm not sure I believe that. I was told he was THE Gen X poet. I don't believe that either. He, like many of my generation was a broken man that never expected to make it as far as he did. It didn't make him great. That all said, I have always loved this album. I felt the band had matured and made a legitimately great album. I don't always put on albums from this time and listen from beginning to end but with this one I do. Sure some is nostalgia reasons, I wore out the tape I had so I was used to listening from front to back. A lot of the music on this still works. It still holds up, my 14 year old enjoys this album.

Heart Shaped Box + Rape Me - Tininyomormaxxing Very Ape - PRODIGYYYYYY Radio friendly - Erre a dalra egyáltalán nem is emlékeztem, pedig baszó Tourette's - ugyanez, jók ezek a Kurt Cobain megőrülések

9/10 Fav: Heart-shaped box, Pennyroyal Tea, Tourette's, All apologies. 9/10

Felt I ought to like this, on the basis of general hype. Sadly let down, does nothing for me.

More palatable than the live album but still didn’t do much for me, all just sounds a bit tone deaf.

I too once wore plaid and yelled

Heart-Shaped Box Rape Me Dumb Pennyroyal Tea All Apologies

I dunno, man, I've just never got Nirvana. I guess I am part of the post-grunge generation and so it's hard to make out their influence on the world I was born into, but this moody, whiny, mumbly music is not for me. The "deliberately less polished" songs, as another reviewer puts it, are the kind of worn-out, too-cool-to-care Gen X apathy that irritates me. I like bands and musicians who make what they do sound effortless, and I will give credit to them if they are actually not putting in any effort, almost regardless of the actual quality of what they produce if they are making art for art's sake. This is the opposite, a band putting in a lot of effort to make it sound like they don't care how they sound. It's not like I hate all grunge, either, I enjoyed both of Hole's albums on this list and they are almost literally bedfellows with Nirvana. All Apologies I liked musically and ended the album on a relatively high note, but overall not for me, thanks.

Hadn’t heard this all the way through in years, but it was great

Classic grunge.

Not a fan, yet.

Not quite as good of an album as Nevermind, but it's definitely the more interesting one. There's a good mix of loud songs and pretty songs here, and the lyrics tend to feel a bit better, I think? But honestly, I don't think Albini's production is nearly as anti-commercial here as it's always reputed to be, like this isn't Seamonsters or Big Black or anything, really.

Not my first time listening through this album. Half is great, half is okay.

Virkilega gott. Ég gef fjórar í þetta skipti en ætla að hlusta betur á hana seinna og hún gæti hækkað upp í fimm.

Duro, grunge, sucio. Nirvana as it is.

Well this was the last studio album of Nirvana unfortunately. Maybe not as historical important and classic as Nevermind but also shows the great catchy songs that Kurt could write. It is less polished/poppy and much more raw. 4/5

It's a good album. Nice listen, no bad songs. But. It really does not have a unique sound or touch. Nice for a drive on the radio.

maybe it makes me a bad gen x'er, but I just never really got nirvana. they're fine I guess? definitely influential of course, but they just never really did much for me. 3/5.

This holds up. No notes. 8 keepers in 12 (75%). 4 bangers (33%).

Didn't get quite through it because I was busy, but it was good.

You know, its a good album. It was a game changer. I never liked it that much though.. in terms of grunge, it is not at the top of my list. 3

I don't remember this album being this good. I think having "Scentless Apprentice" as the second track on the album has soured my memory of the album. I haven't listened to this album in a LONG time, and I was expecting to give it 4 stars, whereas Nevermind would definitely get 5 stars from me. But there's a lot to love on this album. 4.7 stars, rounded up to 5.

I can entertain arguments that In Utero is a better album than Nevermind. It’s amazing that mainstream music was this heavy for a time.

I think Nirvana were just getting better and better. To me this is their best album and the whole band goes all in. Rip Cobain.

Seemed less varied with fewer compelling tracks than Nevermind. Heart shaped box and Dumb were standouts for me.

Don’t really need to listen to every Nirvana album before I die when there are multiple other bands and genres underrepresented. Kurt Cobain is still a pretentious douche nozzle that is over glorified because he died before people could realize who he truly was.

Discazo. Sape

What a crazy time - it’s both amazing and not surprising that this was as popular as it was.

5 stars because teenage me wouldn’t forgive middle aged me for putting anything else

Already listened to it. >:(

In Utero has its moments, but for the most parts, it doesn't really work for me. Too raw, sometimes a bit unhinged. Nevermind was way better IMHO.

This is fantastic and if you disagree you are wrong

Yeah you could tell Kurt wasn’t ok when writing most of these songs There’s some fantastic songs on this, as expected from Nirvana. Heart Shaped Box is a classic, Pennyroyal Tea is a strong one and I honestly think the extra layers bring out its good points more than the unplugged version, and All Apologies is a great one to end on. Cobain’s vocals are really full of emotion and when they work, man they work. Instrumentation on point as always with them I think this is probably the weakest of the 3 we’ve gotten from the book; there’s some songs that are really rough (looking at you Scentless Apprentice) where Cobain just kinda screams and everything’s just chaos. While the high points are high they are by no means comparable to what they accomplished in Nevermind and Unplugged (which to be fair, is kinda unfair since those are two of the greatest albums of all time) Still, I think the mellower sound works wonders in this and really showcases the bands full range better than any individual album. I think the lows are low enough to keep it from a 5, but it’s a really nice album from a legendary band

how anyone was surprised this guy killed himself is beyond me. Its purposely very abrasive, but i find some joy in that.

They went more raw against the commercial success of Nevermind. There are some rockin tracks, a few hits and some stuff that just feels like they wanted to say fuck you.

10/10! One of my favourite albums of all time!

already heard it. good stuf

Their best!

In all sincerity, Kurt burned brighter.

I went into In Utero with pretty high expectations. After really enjoying Nevermind, I was expecting another Nirvana album that would immediately click with me. Unfortunately, that wasn't really the case. There are definitely things I appreciate about In Utero. The album feels much rougher and more abrasive than Nevermind, with a rawer production style and a darker, more uncomfortable atmosphere. Songs like “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies” are memorable, and I can understand why the album is so highly regarded. There’s also something interesting about how deliberately unpolished and confrontational it can sound. But personally, I just didn't enjoy listening to it as much as I expected to. A lot of the harsher guitar tones and more chaotic moments didn't connect with me, and I found myself missing the more immediate melodies and accessible songwriting of Nevermind. In Utero seems like an album that rewards repeated listens, but even after giving it a fair chance, it didn't leave the same impression on me. For me, Nevermind is still the Nirvana album I prefer. It feels more consistent and has more songs that I genuinely want to go back to. I can recognize what makes In Utero important and respected, but being able to appreciate an album's qualities doesn't necessarily mean enjoying it. Overall, In Utero wasn't a bad album at all — it just wasn't the Nirvana experience I was hoping for. Maybe I'll appreciate it more with time, but for now, Nevermind remains my favorite.

Brilliant. It's In Utero.

This was all right. Too much screaming for my taste. Top tracks: Heart-Shaped Box, Dumb, All Apologies. Marigold (personal fave from the deluxe edition).

All apologies. It's not the unplugged album, but still quite good.

I want to like this because it's Kurt Cobain, but most of the album sounds like mush to me.

In Utero é um álbum sujo, pesado, difícil e maravilhoso! A banda funciona perfeitamente e as músicas são brilhantes. QoA Vesper.

In hindsight it’s amazing that a song with the lyric ‘ I wish I could eat your cancer when it turns black’ charted and was on heavy rotation on mtv but I guess that’s the latitude you get when you’ve been at the forefront of…something and more so when you’ve earned the brass a lot of money. In any event, this album rocks, it sounds great, and fuck the naysayers. Kurt was a unique talent and this music is abrasive, vital, strange, and moving.

Nirvana really strikes me as "you had to be there" music. I'm sorry! I don't think, in the current era, it sounds interesting or striking without either nostalgia or the competing vibes of the era to contextualize it. I think perhaps too much music has metabolized the core of it over time which leaves it sounding merely plain.

my notes didn’t save:( 4.3/5

Angry depressed man yells boring rock lyrics into a mic

Rougher sounding but I like that. Great drums and some really strong melodies underneath.

not my style. every single song feels so monotonous that it drives me crazy, didn't found a single song that id like. i expected way more of it but got disappointed as soon as i played the first song. will not be adding to my playlist. :(

Definitely not my favorite, hated the rape me song. I think something about the time period that Nirvana was popular is incompatible with my timeline. Just old enough that growing up this is what stale music sounded like. So its hard to come around to appreciate the sound.

One of the defining alt records of the early 90's. I listened to this CD endlessly when it came out and still love it just as much today 30+ years later as it somehow still feels fresh and innovative.

Great rock album of the 90s

Only 2 songs on here worth listening to by the most overhyped band in history

Another masterpiece from Nirvana that is better than Nevermind. Man, what could have been.

This band was so overplayed on Chicago radio in the 90s. I can't tell you how often I clicked through every preset and it was all Nirvana. Every. Station. Sometimes even the same song. Sometimes even the same song at the same spot in the song. For years. It felt like some form of collective mania or social contagion had taken hold. The Cult of Nirvana. As such, I have a permanent aversion to this band.

Nirvana has never been my jam, but I can appreciate that this is a seminal album

i did not enjoy the screaming in general and was surprised at the “rape me” track although audio wise i enjoyed it. Also relatively liked All Apologies and Pennyroyal tea. I wouldn’t mind hearing it in a bar but I wouldn’t seek out listening to it at home again for my own enjoyment. Maybe sometime I would listen to it with full attention for the sake of appreciating it as a piece of art and expression but not for fun and entertainment
