Time is illmatic
Dang, hit me with Illmatic and then follow it up with Food & Liquor? It's amazing to witness the creativity, sincerity, and focused messaging from a kid coming out of Chicago in the early-2000s with such finesse given the hip-hop environment at the time, and with great beats to boot. I even love the mad long outro credit roll. While it's not my absolute favorite from Lupe (Tetsuo & Youth still lays claim to that even among his latest releases), it is still quintessential Lupe and a staple in the conversation of "classic hip-hop records" and substantive, lyrical hip-hop.
Another one of those critically-acclaimed, beloved albums that get lost on me, like with Lana Del Ray. I've given this work plenty of tries over the years, but it just doesn't take. I think it's a combination of 1) you have to have an inclination toward the genre, full-stop and 2) you had to have followed her career to understand the context of the lyrics and appreciate her progress from when she first started to her mid-career to now to be wowed by where she is now with BRAT. There's some songs I can get with, but not enough that I'd seek them out to listen. It's, overall, just lost on me.
