this, more than any other album i’ve gotten so far, will absolutely be in my rotation of stuff i regularly listen to. i love it
Christine and the Queens · 1 likes

i wish i liked this more coming from a queer trans artist like Chris. i generally struggle to enjoy 80s revival music and this is really part of that category for me. i liked listening to it in french, and 5 dols is my favorite. however, the album starts to feel redundant. there’s so much stuff that could’ve been more experimental. that’s all! it’s all right

this is so 2007 - derogatory - so tired of this UK shit

suuuuch good bops on this one. such a pleasant listen and im better for it!
The Band · 1 likes

this album is stunning front to back, and i really think The Band deserves the level of notoriety given to The Beatles. such a defining and influential band.

Iron Maiden
3/5
i get why people like this. i feel like i can do anything when i listen! wouldn’t reach for it super often, but good stuff.
Dire Straits
4/5
this album goes crazy. i love how the songs are either 2 and a half minutes or like 6 minutes. i would give this a 4.5 if i could. melds genres so well and has some really impressive geetar
Songhoy Blues
4/5
so incredible so smooth so varied
4/5
i have long been a “beatles are overrated” kind of guy but i loved this listen so much. it makes me understand more of it. really good songwriting and just super fun to listen to and instrumentally stellar. nice one! ya got me

5/5

Pere Ubu
4/5
thank god for weird guys from ohio
Coldplay
1/5
this is what happens when you tell men repeatedly that they’re interesting. incredibly uninspired, no song had any business being 5+ minutes
Muddy Waters
4/5
good ol blues music!!!! so musically impressive. go off
Led Zeppelin
5/5
genuinely no skip! a classic for a reason!
juicy, skillfully done bass lines in every song. really found myself relishing those.
these guys just know how to write a catchy, timeless tune
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
5/5
i love his voice so much…wow!
such strong songwriting. this whole thing is a delight to listen to. i wish it was easier to find but i respect it!
one of my favorite finds so far. i’m definitely going to explore his discography.
Pavement
4/5
4.5 stars if i could!
feels like a sunny day
it’s a triumph to be able to enjoy this again
Fatboy Slim
4/5
lucy said that a lot of this sounds like the part of a 90s family movie where the chimp/dog/animal they’ve met starts doing a bunch of crazy tricks on the ski slope/court/skate ramp/computer
The Flaming Lips
4/5
so, so fun to listen to. these guys know how to do a theme. i love the instrumentals in this and noticed them more than i had in previous albums of theirs
Sister Sledge
4/5
4.5 stars! JUST GOOD STUFF!
Todd Rundgren
4/5
4.5 stars! god this guy has a good voice. smoooooth rock but can also shred and isn’t afraid to get goofy
OutKast
3/5
i’m gonna be so honest that i didn’t listen to all of it but hope to at some point. it’s just such a long album and feels not particularly inspired like so much of their other stuff does
Mj Cole
4/5
4.5 stars
suuuuch good bops on this one. such a pleasant listen and im better for it!
Garbage
2/5
i really wanted to like this, and i do somewhat, but there’s so many other 90s bands i prefer: Helium, Kelly Deal 6000, Swirlies being my favorites. this just doesn’t scratch the same itch for me, but i get its merit and i love to see a cool girl singing
5/5
this, more than any other album i’ve gotten so far, will absolutely be in my rotation of stuff i regularly listen to. i love it
David Bowie
5/5
truly no skip, absolutely masterful, really fun to listen to. never gets boring
Billy Joel
1/5
i have heard this so many times against my will. this is what happens, in my opinion, when an annoying theater guy becomes too famous. i just really find his style of music so grating, i don’t care for his voice, i don’t like his storytelling. it is just decisively not for me
The Avalanches
3/5
3.5 stars
i like the banger tracks the best by far!
Public Enemy
4/5
so significant and well done and awesome
4.5
Paul Simon
4/5
i love this album. it has such strong songs, and it’s such a good first half. the last part gets a little like yeah we get it. but i love it!
Earth, Wind & Fire
3/5
some really fun bops! honestly so soured for me by working retail at a place that played this incessantly, but i still have love and respect for it!
Rush
4/5
dudes absolutely rock. this is awesome
David Bowie
2/5
sounds like a U2 album, unfortunately. a flop from a musician i really do admire. not musically interesting and the lyrics felt so redundant and vaguely empty.
Beatles
3/5
this contains so many of the beatles songs i’ve clowned on before. i really did enjoy sgt pepper’s, but this one just sounds like the result of what it was: a bunch of adult men arguing. some good songs,
for sure. while my guitar gently weeps is a certified timeless banger, and i understand why it wowed people. the entirety of the album is not for me and it’s too long. sorry!
TV On The Radio
1/5
i did not need to hear this before i die! the grating vocals, backed by a 4-octaves higher shriek, followed by the same 3 guitar chords, are so boring to me.
i do not understand the appeal.
Moby Grape
4/5
a really fun album! definitely psychedelic leaning. i really appreciated that each song sounded distinctly different.
Bonnie Raitt
4/5
her voice is perfect. a beautiful late 80s time capsule
Nine Inch Nails
5/5
Jefferson Airplane
5/5
this is such a good album and i’m so glad i heard it before i die! so lush and varied and good
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
3.5 stars — this is a fun one, not one i think i’ll reach for a ton but glad to have listened to it
B.B. King
3/5
rating this as what it is for me — i know this is historically, musically so important and it’s good! i just don’t think i’ll listen again
Joni Mitchell
4/5
Little Green is a downright perfect song and always moves me to tears. 💚 i love the first half of this album, and the last song is so powerful. it starts to all blend together at some points, but this is definitely my favorite Joni album.
4.35 if i could 💙
Michael Kiwanuka
4/5
incredible voice and musically interesting. the bangers were my favorites, a few too many ballads for my taste but man is he good!
Stephen Stills
2/5
2.5 stars
rounding down on my official review because i want to send a message that WHY the hell would i need to listen to this before i die? this is such a spectacularly mid album. Stills is a great guitarist, and when that gets to shine the songs are good, but the vocals, the inexplicable choir, the songwriting, it’s all just meh to me. not something i needed to listen to.
The Band
5/5
this album is stunning front to back, and i really think The Band deserves the level of notoriety given to The Beatles. such a defining and influential band.
The Everly Brothers
3/5
Anthrax
3/5
Beck
2/5
im sorry but i think this is a snooze fest. he’s done so much more interesting, fun stuff. a few good songs but mostly just no thanks
Christine and the Queens

2.5 stars
i wish i liked this more coming from a queer trans artist like Chris. i generally struggle to enjoy 80s revival music and this is really part of that category for me. i liked listening to it in french, and 5 dols is my favorite. however, the album starts to feel redundant. there’s so much stuff that could’ve been more experimental. that’s all! it’s all right

Rahul Dev Burman
4/5
this is such a good film score and also just so fun to listen to in the car
Leonard Cohen
5/5
unparalleled, imitable, stunning
The Sonics
3/5
very fun! i love how wacky the mix is, how loud and fuzzy
William Orbit
4/5
people were hating on this, but i personally really enjoyed the departure from the entirely predictable stuff that mostly is on this list. this was an awesome album to listen to as i navigated a snowstorm, and it’s a fun prelude to some of my favorite ambient artists to follow. i’m glad i listened to it
Paul McCartney and Wings
5/5
this actually rocked so much, and i’m saying that as someone who does not really care for the beatles but i think this really has the sauce. i will absolutely listen to it again
Fugees
3/5

this album has such a special place in my heart. i think the first half is strongest. some really good songwriting and so much of what it feels like to grow up in the world a girl. this album helped me learn how to be pissed off. i’m so grateful for that

Amy Winehouse
2/5
not my favorite amy but impressive for being so young
Frank Black
3/5
some fun stuff! i will admit that by the second half i was getting pretty tired of it. there’s some fun tongue in cheek stuff, and then there’s some things that could’ve stayed in the drafts. some good geeeetar though
4/5

Bob Dylan
5/5
he really is that good of a songwriter
The Triffids
2/5
started off being like, why does everyone hate this? it’s fun 80s stuff, some fun synth. then it definitely is too long and starts to get so derivative. but still waaaay better than some of the british crap on this list, respectfully
Julian Cope
4/5
i thought this was fun and original and i love his voice. it’s inventive and impressive and it bums me out that taylor swift has a higher rating than this

4/5
The Beau Brummels
2/5
very derivative — mainly i’m giving it a lower rating because i absolutely didn’t need to hear it before i die and it really rips off so many other better albums. not the worst on this list by a long shot, but very uninspired
The Incredible String Band
3/5
Tracy Chapman
5/5
lesbian excellence. such strong songwriting and a voice unlike any other
The Rolling Stones
4/5
they really are that good
Neil Young
5/5

Massive Attack

Prince
4/5
Elvis Presley
3/5
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Sheryl Crow
3/5
kind of mystified that this sheryl album is on this list. not my favorite of hers musically, lyrically, or thematically but i will always have a soft spot for her voice. toooooo many ballads, though
Eagles
5/5
honestly this is a no skip album for me and i love it so much. awesome music to listen to on a july day with the windows down
Frank Sinatra
3/5
this is pleasant enough to listen to. there’s other jazz i like more, and every song sounds the same, but it’s very easy listening and i can see why it appeals to the masses.
The Vines
1/5
did not need to hear this before i die and don’t you dare compare it to nirvana…yawn
Cornershop
3/5
you know what? everyone does need a bosom for a pillow
The Who

my goodwill for this reeeeally was stretched thin by the last track
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
the only thing my extended family is right about is this album rocking
Ice T
4/5
i’d never heard an Ice T album before and i was so pleasantly surprised. fiercely political, experimental, lots of fun.
Richard Hawley
2/5
immensely boring. this is fine enough to hear in the grocery store or something, but i’m truly tired of seeing stuff like this on this list that’s supposed to have some magnitude
De La Soul
4/5
Baaba Maal
2/5
this is the kind of stuff my friend’s scary mom would have playing on NPR while she made buckwheat pancakes. very talented musician, not up my alley
Shuggie Otis

Iggy Pop
4/5
michigan excellence
The Chemical Brothers
5/5
THIS ROCKS
Black Sabbath
5/5
getting this album on the day Ozzy left this mortal realm was really something. it felt like communion. this album is really, truly perfect. timeless. i’m 29 and i love this like i was alive for it
Morrissey
2/5
so boring and musically uninspired. morrissey has a great voice, aside from being the most fuckin annoying guy ever. but like many have pointed out in their reviews, his solo stuff makes it painfully obvious that the heart of the smiths and the talent of the smiths largely belonged to his less annoying, more humble band mates.
Aretha Franklin
5/5
she absolutely bodied this!!!!!
My Bloody Valentine
4/5
it’s super nice to see them developing their sound here
2/5
these aren’t all bad, but it’s such retail music. nothing to really hold onto
The Doors
3/5
so much more lethargic and downtrodden than a lot of the earlier stuff i love. still an inherent magic to what these guys get up to, but more of a slog.
Tim Buckley
2/5
unfortunately boring! i like some of his other stuff and the xylophone was cool but only for so long
The Notorious B.I.G.
3/5
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
is this sort of a bunch of songs that sound the same? absolutely. but i gobble it up because i love that sound
Dire Straits
4/5
smooth, awesome, fun to listen to
Janet Jackson
4/5
justice for janet…she has always deserved so much more recognition and this is such a fun album
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
i love Bruce Springsteen, and no one was immune to the banal, trying so hard to be deep soft rock of the immediacy of 9/11. it genuinely feels like Bruce picks a few words: blood, lips, seed, sky, and then just tries to weave them into every song even if it’s super contrived. lyrically tired, musically uninspired, and i have to agree with another review that said why not pick an artist at their prime in 2002? there certainly were some. i love The Boss SO much, and this is not his finest by a long shot.
Crosby, Stills & Nash
5/5
truly a remarkable album
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
5/5
truly a remarkable album
Deerhunter
3/5
solid indie album that’s aged better than many others. didn’t grab me super tight, but it’s a pleasant listen
Led Zeppelin
4/5
really cool departures from their sound in this while still being so distinctly them. Tangerine is one of my favorites
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
i love these guys, i cannot explain why, but i do, and even then there’s still a limit where i think they could reel it in perhaps. the good songs on this album go so hard, and there’s also a lot that are a little toooooo quirked up
Wu-Tang Clan
5/5
Incubus
3/5
music that a really cool older cousin would have playing in their sedan in the 2000s
Keith Jarrett
2/5

Christina Aguilera
2/5
Eminem
2/5

i was so pleasantly surprised by this. i was expecting to dislike it because i remember being irked by her voice as a kid. as i’ve gotten older, though, i love someone who can push their voice to the limits: neil young, bjork, definitely joanna. the harp in this is stunning and all the arrangements are beautiful. found me at the right time! 4.5 but i’m rounding up
