Very fun southern and blues rock, some songs were very reminiscent of classic blues songs
Loved the instrumentation, great messages. Mixed feelings of the vocals, sometimes great sometimes not my cup of tea.
Love the vibes, more contemplative and proggy in some parts than more recent Coldplay albums
Wasn't sure I'd like it because I've never connected with Bob Dylan's vocal style, but I really enjoyed it! Loved the blues elements, the instrumentation, and storytelling. Some of the songs do run long.
I like it fine. I like the beats, and 50 Cent's presence and flow. But, his rapping doesn't have a lot of lyrical and metric complexity. It feels like storytelling could've been a core part of the experience, but most of the songs are quite vague and focused on generalities instead of specifics. The songs don't have a lot of thematic variation. He sings more than I would've expected, it's ok.
Some classics, some boring songs
Love his voice, the production is very fun and varied. Classic.
Johnny rotten is super annoying. I still bounce off of this album, though I appreciate its influence on tons of music I love.
Incredible instrumentation, has a depth and complexity to it that is often under-imitated by influencees. Definitely a classic.
Absolutely love this album. Guitars are soaring, vocals are incredible. Every song is great.
I liked it much more than I expected, my perception of Fiona Apple is more poetic/arty than music I usually like. This album was really musically compelling and jazzy, though a little meandering sometimes. I wouldn't be surprised if this keeps growing on me.
Feels very childish, in subject matter and when Eminem sings hooks. Though horrorcore in general is definitely not for me. Stan and Eminem's sometimes-used rap skill pull it up a bit.
Love the blues songs and like the folk songs. Meandering overlong sometimes, but felt more approachable and catchy than Highway 61 Revisited.
I really liked the orchestral elements and complex/experimentally riffs. A fair amount of the songs are a very nice mix of experimentality and catchiness, I was bobbing my head to several of them. Sometimes the lyrics were overly clear-cut/cheesy (Your Dictionary especially).
Sounds very Beatles-influenced to me, enjoyed the psychedelic elements (some of the instrumentals were quite fun), but for lots of songs both the instruments and vocals felt a bit dull, nothing stood out/took center stage
So much musical skill on display! Really fun to listen to.
I didn't expect to like this album. But here we are. His delivery, the poetic nature of the lyrics, and his penchant for mystical/religious symbolism all added a mythical element to the music for me. The instrumentation was usually simple and didn't evolve much throughout the songs, but the cadence and statements/nature of the lyrics still made me often feel like there was rising tension to successive verses. Also I'm a sucker for gravelly voices.
Very enjoyable listen, I liked the guitar work a lot. It felt somewhat familiar to music I know well but with more psychedelic elements.
Really enjoyed the blues elements and the guitar work!
Great ethereal post-rock vibes
This album became very interesting. Cool sounds, unusual chords, and ethereal vocals. Felt kinda progressive. It was a lot of fun!
I love Johnny Cash's voice and enjoy his guitar work. Not always big on live albums, but it's cool to hear his rapport and connection with the inmates.
Initially I thought I'd be bored, I don't always like (what I perceive to be) early-Beatles-like sound. But this album revealed lots of cool multifaceted elements. The guitars weaving together was really good, as well as the complex basslines. Lots of musical skill on display!
Mixed feelings, I really like some of the guitar work and musicianship, but sometimes felt a bit detached/disengaged.
Incredible. Blues elements, jazzy complexity, rock sound experimentation, there's so much going on here. Loved it!
Good stuff, though this particular album being live hurts rather than helps (screaming).
This one's on the edge of 3 and 4 for me, I've listened to it a couple of times and alternate between feeling disconnected and interested. I really like the musicianship (including a bari sax solo!).
Not a fan of his voice, and the storytelling style of the songs felt a bit repetitive/simple ("<person> was an <occupation>" or something about walking down the street). It's possible he's telling important stories or making points, but being so separated from the zeitgeist/living context I don't feel compelled enough to go learn.
Sucked me in, I really enjoyed the dreamy vibes, it feels like I'm floating in space. Occasionally a bit repetitive, otherwise I really enjoyed it.
*Andy Dwyer making Eddie Vedder mouth noises* So good! I didn't listen to these guys as much growing up but I listened to tons of bands who were inspired by them. Love the heaviness, his gravelly voice, such great stuff!
Very enjoyable listen, at points got close to a 5 for me. It's like if the Killers made a Bob Dylan album. Powerful emotions, I love the long shifting songs.
I tried to like this, but I didn't get a lot out of it. The more conventional dimension of the music is kinda boring to me, and the more experimental dimension is painful rather than intriguing/engaging. I know the album is very influential and ahead of its time, but it doesn't really speak to me.
It's always harder when I don't speak the language, since there's a whole dimension I can't engage with. This rating doesn't say anything about the music's objective/historical quality, just how it hits me specifically. Very complex and varied instrumentals that I mostly liked a lot.
I really like the solos. Sometimes the guitar-work felt more boring than I was expecting. I don't much like the vocals, his voice doesn't feel strong/polished enough when he sings metal-style, and feels artificial/weak when singing more loose/punk-style. Their particular combo of hardcore and metal often felt like it was bringing the weaker aspects of both (lack of polish of hardcore, over-reliance on "big" vocals and driving guitar for metal).
Love the guitars, grooves, all-around vibes. Absolutely incredible musicianship. I think this one was close to a 5 for me, but for bits of the talk-singing song and a song-or-two that felt a bit overlong.
Very technically skilled. I do find myself zoning out or getting distracted. I probably don't have enough music skill to hear a lot of the complexity going on here. I tend to like hotter jazz better.
His voice is so good. Hurt is such a 10/10 song, you can really feel the depth of emotion. The album is a bit overlong, some of the songs don't hit as much as others.
This album was fascinating. It sounds off-kilter and almost carnival-like sometimes, then other songs have a more streamlined (but still eclectic instrumentally) sound. Sometimes the discord was a bit uncomfortable (and "9th and Hennepin", whew). But mostly I enjoyed and was drawn in by the instrumentals. The range of musical styles and sounds is impressive. Love the blues tunes the most. As well as vocal delivery, he goes from a gravelly folk style, to Louis-Armstrong-style jazz singing, to wild blues growls and wails. I loved almost all of the vocals, the gravelly voice gets me again.
OK, didn't feel particularly memorable.
Very enjoyable funky vibes
Incredible. Shows off the titanic skills of the individual players and their ability to make great music together. And of course Duke Ellington's composing and directing ability. Love it!
Maybe slightly above a 3 for me, but not a 4. Definitely liked it more than Anthrax. Guitar riffs were great, I mostly liked the vocal style. Lyrics are sometimes quite silly. Sometimes the songs felt repetitive, and the mix felt a little flat, like the different instruments weren't standing out much.
Really enjoyed it! I really like the sparse, icy beats. His delivery and flow is great, there are some quite dense rhymes. Occasionally the lyrics are a little cheesy.
Mixed feelings, the songs sometimes had really nice grooves and other times kinda repetitive or artificial
Alternates between sounding like the Beatles and David Bowie to me. Some of the songs are really fun and catchy (esp. Mambo Sun), but others didn't feel as novel/attention-grabbing. Between a 3 and 4 for me.
Love the guitar work, the powerful and soulful singing, and the grooves. Really draws me in. I am, of course, very partial to the blues.
Interesting ideas but didn't hook me all that much.
Super funky, love the guitar and baselines. Some songs+grooves were definitely 5s. Had a lot of fun with this one and enjoyed it aside from a bit of repetitiveness and some meh lyrics.
Very interesting! Kinda ambient-feeling, lots of unusual chords/progressions and shifting between different modes?keys?somethings. Great cool vibes to work to. The shifting nature of the music sometimes makes it hard to latch onto.
The first half was very fun, the second half interesting though not super memorable, a little too ambient for me.
