Amy Winehouse
2/5
Track 1 was very groovy and reminded me of a jam song. In track 2, Amy Winehouse's unique vocals really shine through. She has such a distinct voice and I have never particularly enjoyed her music much. I think there is a lot of vocal musicality, but it is lacking that in instrumentation which is usually more enjoyable to me. These first two tracks are also multiple compositions into one track, which I don't usually enjoy either especially when the transitions are as choppy as they are in this instance. Track 3 is honestly so bland to me. The whole song is just repetition, the vocals are flat, and instrumentation is thin and rhythmically simple. Track 4 is a feminist critique on contemporary relationships and hook-up culture. I like the message of this song a lot, as the lyrics also address the female desire to appeal to the male gaze, which is something that has significantly worsened over time with the growing popularity of social media. Track 5 is about trying to replace a prior connection with someone who is similar or identical to that person. I like the lyric "he looks like you, but I heard love is blind," because I feel like it highlights that love is beyond looks and public image. Sometimes you don't get to choose who you love or how you love, which is a blessing and a curse. Track 6 is a love song, or rather two love songs. I like the beat of this song, but yet again I feel like the overall blend of musicality is lacking. Track 7 is a beautifully written, lyrical love song, drawing in more jazz themes. I personally am not a fan of jazz. Track 8 is my favorite song so far. I haven't realized this in the other songs, although it is true there, but generally there are not vocal harmonies which is why I always feel like the vocal performance is underwhelming/under delivering. In this song, there are more harmonies and I enjoy that very much. Track 9 is also a little more instrumentally interesting, as there is more of a groove going on that provides harmonies that are lacking in the vocals. No special notes about track 10. Track 11 is very groovy and vocally sounds different from the other tracks (in a good way). This one I would willingly listen to in my free time. Track 12 has an interesting call and response sequence that I like a lot. The vocals in this track are different from the rest of the album, much like in track 11. Track 13 was the outro. Track 14 has no special notes from me, not bad but not great. Overall, the album was mediocre. There were no songs that I thoroughly enjoyed, as the vocals and instrumentals never really quite matched up in the way that I like.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
I'm excited to listen to this album because I love some of Led Zeppelin's songs, and specifically some on this album. Track 1 was my favorite song of theirs when I first became a fan and I recently learned they stole heavily from a Muddy Waters song and were later sued (and lost) for it. This song to me is phenomenal, but the middle instrumental section always felt kind of abrupt and out of place to me, as you can tell they are trying to bring in psychedelic themes. The transition between the opening and the guitar solo felt very off to me, but the solo makes up for it. It truly was life-changing when I heard it for the first time. The vocal performance in the song is just so remarkable and truly authentic for its time. Track 2 starts off more melodically, which is a nice contrast to the rest of the song, but it makes the distortion on the vocals quite noticeable. Now, this doesn't sound as good as I'm sure it did in its prime time. However, the contrast really makes this song unique and fascinating. The upbeat sections are very catchy. It is obvious that Jeff Buckley was inspired by this song when writing "Yard of Blonde Girls," so much so the resemblance was immediately noticeable. Track 3 is lyrically very interesting as it portrays the feeling of choosing someone regardless of your gut feeling, but realizing later that you should not have chosen them against all odds (an unfortunate feeling.) Musically, this song is not as catchy as the first two tracks to me, but the guitar riffs do live up to the prior tracks. What I like most about a lot of Led Zeppelin's earlier, more upbeat songs is that you can hear how much they enjoy making the music. There is authenticity in the vocals and random guitar riffs that come in and out. It draws heavily on the bluesy call and response theme and almost reminds me of Jimi Hendrix in a way. I like that they made music they enjoyed, rather than what they thought others would enjoy. It just so happened to fit both categories perfectly. Track 4 is a lyrically beautiful love song. I like that it is untraditional in the sense that it is not entire melodic/lyrical. In a way, it feels like they are trying to showcase the woman's beauty through the guitar parts and harmonies. Track 5 has such an iconic guitar riff, I think that is true for a lot of their songs. People recognize the general melody, but no one really listens to it enough to know the lyrics. I think this changes a little as they put out more music and their songs become more sing-along-able. Jimmy Page absolutely kills it on the guitar every time, I must say. Track 6 is very vocally impressive and pleasing on the ears. The harmonies within certain lines are phenomenal, and the vocal bends are just so good. Track 7 is honestly a classic, I think when people think of Led Zeppelin they think of "Stairway to Heaven" and this song. It is very good. Track 8 does not appear to have any lyrics, which I think is interesting to add to this particular album because, once again, it shows the passion they have for just making good music. I think it is also important in really highlighting their musical skills and diversity. Track 9 initially reminds me of Elvis Presley, which I wonder if this is their attempt to bring in another, more popular side of blues music. After the intro, the guitar riffs are genuinely so powerful and just mesmerizing. The diversity of this band is just so admirable. I think overall, you can really tell that this is an experimental album and that at the time they were still trying to figure out their sound. However, with this album they found it. It has the classic Led Zeppelin sound, with impressive vocals and rhythmically and harmonically complex guitar riffs. The diversity in individual songs alone is also quite interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed this entire album.
Portishead
1/5
I have never heard of this band before so I am excited to get into listening to this album. Track 1 right off the bat has an interesting beat, seems to be a female-led band which can be really hit or miss in my opinion. I like the kind of eerie, mysterious vibe this song is giving off. So far, I am wondering if the song ever reaches a climactic point or if there is some kind of main verse/melody but it does not seem like there will be either of those things. I think its a cool sound at first, but it does not go anywhere so I hope the other songs are different. Track 2 is honestly boring. The songs seem to be just repetition of the same phrases/verse with little to no growth or depth. I am not impressed at this point in the album. Track 3 has a good beat, which is consistent with the two prior songs. With a brief look at the lyrics, I can already tell that this song will be like the others -- an interesting intro and repetitive verses. I think the music is just underwhelming. This song, however, has a little more to it with a muffled intro and "beat drop" after where the song really begins. The vocal performance is lacking in my opinion. Track 4 is also boring to me. I think I would consider this album kind of slow-core and I think I have drifted from that genre and into music with more going on both vocally and rhythmically. Track 5 is their most popular song as a band. I will say it is the best song I have heard so far, but by a very small margin. I have not listened to their other music, but they have a very Evanescence-like sound and I think they could honestly really pull off some music like theirs. Track 6 is a little more vocally interesting than the other songs, and I have noticed the lyrics getting less repetitive over songs. Track 7 is still boring to me, I am not really enjoying this album so far. I am half tempted to not even finish it because I am so bored. I have no notes for track 8, 9, or 10. Track 11 is by far the best one on the album.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
I have never heard of this band or album before, and I also have not listened to much prog rock so I am excited. Track 1, I am realizing about a minute in, is 20 minutes long. There is no doubt this is inspired by King Crimson. So far it is very groovy, just not something I would willingly put on when I typically listen to music. The mix of electronic, electric, and acoustic sounds reminds me of video game music. I just got to the first sung line of the song and I like the vocals and the harmonies. Now that the song seems to have really begun, I like it a lot. I am excited to hear the shorter songs. I also am realizing the first song is seven different movements: Eruption, Stones of Years, Iconoclast, Mass, Manticore, Battlefield, and Aquatarkus. Honestly, I might take back my prior statement of never willingly putting this on. It is growing on me, however, I still wish it was broken up into different songs. I feel like songs this long and with multiple movements are best appreciated by those with taste in classical compositions. The last couple of minutes feel so long knowing you already listened to so much of it. I like that the last minute or so brings you back to the sounds of the intro of the song. I am really liking track 2 so far, it reminds me of The Beatles. Track 3 is catchy but I wish it was a little more melodic. No lyrics for track 4 so I am assuming it is all instrumental. I was wrong there are lyrics. It has a very dark vibe to it, but it is a hymn so I am not surprised. I am very shocked at how similar vocally this group sounds to The Beatles. Track 5 also does not appear to have lyrics, but my laptop could also just be lagging. This one is entirely instrumental, so far it is probably my least favorite track on the album. It is not bad, just boring. Immediately, track 6 is a good song. They seem to have a more unique sound in this song, which I like. It is more upbeat and has lyrics. The same goes for track 7. It has more of a bluesy-pop sound to it, more like Elvis Presley. Overall, this album was something I don't typically listen to and I did not hate it but I was not exactly changed by it either.
OutKast
3/5
I generally enjoy Outkast's music, but this album will be the longest one I've listened to yet for this project and I am kind of dreading it. Here we go. So far, I think the intro is doing a good job of setting a tone/vibe for the album and I am enjoying it. I thought track 2 was a little uninteresting, and there was a weird transition in the beginning of it that felt really out of place. I think this is a good song but it isn't really that catchy to me, I wouldn't dedicate my time to learning the lyrics to this song. I enjoy the slower sections more than the faster parts. I like track 3 more than 2, it is catchier. I think this genre of music is also something I am not super familiar with, which means I don't really have a lot to say about it. Track 4 has no lyrics available. I have heard this song before, although I did not recognize it at first. It is a very good, catchy song, I cannot lie. The song is mostly interlude/background vocals so it makes sense now why the lyrics are not available. Track 5 is pretty good, there is nothing really remarkable about it to me. Track 6 feels about the same to me as track 5 did. Track 7 reminds me of "20 Questions," specifically the style of rap and the enunciation. Honestly, this album is really long and I am tempted to not finish it. I am on track 11 now and I do like it a lot. It is catchy. There is still 28 songs after this one. I truly might not finish this. Maybe I will just listen until Disc 2, which means only 8 more songs. The first half of this has been really good. I like the vibes, style of rap, lyrics, and most other elements of the songs. Occasionally, some songs sound very similar and I feel like overall it could do with less 20 to 30 second interludes. However, it was good.
Manu Chao
4/5
I have never listened to French rock before so I am excited for this. Right off the bat, track 1 is giving reggae vibes. This definitely is in Spanish, not French. I will say that the lyrics are a big part of why I enjoy the music I do, so not understanding what they are saying is definitely a challenge. However, I think it is helping me appreciate the music more as the art it is, instead of making it something to relate to. Track 2 is good, I wonder if this was the foundation for Spanish music or if it was influenced by something older because it seems like this style of music has persisted throughout the decades. Track 3 has English lyrics, which is nice. I like this song, it is catchy and a little whimsical. I am not sure if I just wasn't really paying attention, but I liked the transition from track 3 into track 4. This song is, in fact, French. It is honestly impressive that we are only four songs into the album and have already heard three separate, and might I say very contrasting, languages. I like track 5 a lot as well. Track 6 reminds me of Gianni Morandi's voice, in a good way because I enjoy some of his music a lot. There is some rapping in this song, which is incredibly impressive. I am enjoying this album very much considering I don't understand it entirely. I like that track 11 connects back to track 6 as a much slower, calmer version of the same main melody. Overall, this album was really really good. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing a mixture of languages, tempos, and general vibes throughout the album. This is definitely my second favorite album so far, behind Led Zeppelin II.
Rod Stewart
3/5
I am excited to listen to this. Immediately, I am loving the sound of track 1. Track 2 has a very groovy, upbeat vibe and I am enjoying it. The vocals remind me of Mr. Big. I like the storytelling, especially in track 3. I caught the reference to America's "Horse with No Name." The guitar in this track is actually heavenly to listen to, this song was amazing. There are no lyrics posted for track 4 so we shall see. I really like the guitar riffs in this song. I just fact-checked, and Rod Stewart became the lead singer of Faces in 1969 after the first guy left, which means he did in fact sing on "Ooh La La," the album I am most familiar with. Track 5 is good but it is nothing super impressive or notable to me, it's quite repetitive actually. I feel like this album falls off as it progresses. It started out really strongly and the more I listen, the less I enjoy it as a whole. Overall, the album was pretty okay. I think maybe if I was in the mood for music that really sounded like that, I would put it on.
ZZ Top
3/5
I am familiar with ZZ Top, but I have not listened to their music in a while so I am excited for this. Track 1 is very groovy. Historically, "Blue Jean Blues" has been my favorite song of theirs so I am hoping for that to change. The first track is good, but nothing incredible to me. I feel like the first track of an album is almost never the best one. However, this one is impressive and gives me hope for the rest of the album. Track 2 is not that great in my opinion, I feel like so far for this album the guitar riffs have been technically difficult but are lacking in musicality or authenticity. It feels a little bland and somewhat robotic. I wish it was more bluesy. Everyone knows track 3, if not by name then definitely by the main guitar riff. I do like this song, it is quite catchy and more musical than the first two. I am liking track 4 a lot. The musicality in the album seems to grow the further I progress which is nice. The main riff in track 5 sounds a lot like track 3. Honestly, the base of the songs all sound the same. Funny enough, track 6 is individually recognizable with less guitar riffs and longer, more melodic singing. I still do not entirely love it though. Honestly, I am not that impressed with this album. I have two tracks left and am a little disappointed with how similar a lot of the songs sound.
Elvis Costello
4/5
I have never heard of this album or artist before so here we go. I am hoping for something really good. Immediately, I like track 1 a lot. I am very hopeful for the rest of the album. I might even retract my statement from yesterday, where I said the first track of an album is almost never that good. It has a very 90's sound to it, it reminds me of Peyton Sawyer. I like track 2 a lot as well. Track 3 has a Beach Boy's kind of vibe to it. I do not like it as much as the first two tracks so far, but it is still very good. Track 4 has a very bluesy sound to it, I like it a lot. This is one of his more politically charged songs. Track 5 is more lyrical and melodic. It sounds nice but I definitely do not enjoy it as much as 1, 2, or 4. The same goes for track 6. I like track 7. Track 8 is another politically charged song, very nice. Track 9 definitely has some Elvis Presley vibes going on, which makes sense considering his name is inspired by Presley. Track 10 is very catchy. This album has been very good so far, but I would be lying if I said it was a perfect, no-skips album. Track 11 is so creative, I love the whispered background vocals. The guitar solos are so peak. Overall, this album has been really good and I hope to see more albums that are this good as I continue this project. Hopefully, a five-star album is coming my way soon.
The Smashing Pumpkins
4/5
I love The Smashing Pumpkins but I do not think I have listened to this album in full yet, so I am excited. It is 2 hours long, which I did not finish the last album that was this long, but since I am familiar and I took a 3 hour nap earlier, I might finish it. Here we go. Track 1 is honestly so beautiful. I think it is interesting because you wouldn't expect such a beautiful composition to be track 1 on an album made by an alternative band. Also, considering I have heard a lot of this band's songs, it is very different from their usual sound. Track 2 is one of my favorite TSP songs The Smashing Pumpkins really know how to write the most heavenly guitar riffs that fit the contrasting sounds of twangy pop and metal. Track 3 has such a different sound from track 2 that it is nothing short of just impressive. I have heard this song before and it is another one of my favorites. Track 4 is yet another favorite. Honestly, I don't think I have ever heard a song of theirs that I did not like. If anything, their songs are usually the kind that I play over and over again until I get sick of it, and the time away from these songs reminds me once again how good they are. Track 5 is a song I have not heard before, but I like it a lot. Track 6 is a classic song, has always been and will always be good. Track 7 is another one I have not heard before, but I do like it. I have never heard track 8 before and honestly it is not my favorite, but it is still good. Track 8 is good, I like it. Track 9 is amazing. This seems so far like it might be a 5 star album. There have been no skips yet. Track 10 is another classic. Track 11 is another one I have not heard before, but it is very good. The same goes for track 12. Track 13 was absolutely transcendental. I have just a couple songs left on the album now. Overall, this album is really, really good. I think in the middle it gets a little less interesting so I think I will give this one 4 stars. I think if it was shorter, it would definitely be 5 stars.
Christine and the Queens
2/5
Another French album. The last one was actually quite good so I am excited for this. It is long though so I will only be listening to disc 1. Track 1 is good, it's definitely giving pop music though. Honestly, I cannot tell if I like it or not. I think right now, listening to it at the moment, it is good. However, I don't think I'll ever want to put this on just to listen to. Track 3 has very strong 80s pop vibes, and I do not love it. I am not sure if I even want to finish the first disc. I am not really enjoying this. Yeah I am about 6 tracks in and I am going to have to leave this here. I will give this a two because it is at least more enjoyable than Dummy by Portishead. Just not in the mood to finish this today.
Lou Reed
4/5
The name Lou Reed sounds familiar but I cannot recall any of his music so I am excited to listen to it. Right off the bat, track 1 sounds very similar to Pavement. I like this sound a lot so hopefully it is consistent throughout the album. It has a very 90's sound considering it was released in 1972. Track 2 reminds me of the Violent Femmes with the kind of monotonous singing. I like it. I just discovered he was a member of The Velvet Underground, which is why the name sounds so familiar to me. That makes a lot of sense as to why his sound is also very familiar. Track 3 is different from the first two tracks, with more musical vocals and a lyrical sound. I am enjoying this. Track 4 is quite the switch up from track 3 as it is very upbeat. I am really liking this album so far. Tracks 4 and 5 were okay, I do not have much to say about them except that I am surprised track 5 is his most popular song. I feel like tracks 1 and 3 were much better. Track 6 was a little strange lyrically but it was a good song. Track 7 is very interesting, probably the most interesting song yet which is nice. I am on the last track right now and overall this album has been really good, but definitely not 5 stars. I have been trying to go off just my first instinct for ratings, so I will give this one 4 stars.
Metallica
2/5
10 hour long album is fucking insane. I am only going to listen to disc one which is 8 songs. I have never been a huge fan of Metallica and I doubt this will change my mind on that. I think as a band, they are extremely overrated. Track 1 is one of their better songs. Track 2 is THE Metallica song and, once again, I think it is entirely too hyped up. I feel like Metallica is only good to men with overly large egos and a God complex who think they are better than everyone else because they listen to Metallica. Stop trying to be different, there is heavier music that is exponentially better than this. I think the only thing saving this album from a 1 star review from me is the occasionally cool guitar riff/solo. The vocals are subpar and generally, the music is boring and the songs are way too long (just like the whole album). I am so bored with this I honestly might just stop here.
Burning Spear
4/5
I have never heard of this before so I am excited to listen to it. Reggae is also a genre I have been wanting to explore more so I hope I like it. I like track 1 a lot, I won't lie. Sometimes, reggae is hit or miss for me so I am optimistic that this one will hit (in a good way). I like track 2 a lot as well, I feel like in a lot of ways it is a textbook example of reggae music. Track 3 was also really good, I am liking this album a lot so far. Track 4 has been my favorite so far off the album. Track 5 and 6 were also good. Track 7 is another favorite so far off this album. Track 8 is my new favorite on this track. I like this one a lot and it sounds very different from the other tracks. I really like Burning Spears based on this album, I would listen to more of their music. The more I listen the better this song gets, wow. Overall, the album was really good. The only thing that is preventing me from giving it 5 stars is that I would not particularly listen to it again in full. 4.5 stars but I am rounding down to 4.
Bad Brains
4/5
I have never heard of this band before but I saw they have a Live at CBGB album and I am excited to listen. Track 1 starts off reminding me kind of Alice in Chains. I am not sure how I feel about the vocals, it feels very experimental. However, the guitar parts are good. Honestly, I can't tell how I feel about it. I think it embodies punk rock pretty well, but I am not sure if I really enjoy it or not. I definitely do not hate it. Track 5 is pretty good, the guitar solo is absolutely heavenly. Track 8 was also really good, those two have been my favorites so far. Overall, this album has been pretty good but not great. Instinctively, I would give this album three stars, but because of the sick guitar solos, I will give it four.
Eagles
5/5
I love Eagles but I have never listened to this album in full so I am excited. Track 1 is a classic, I know every word to this song and it is amazing. I have never heard track 2 before but I love it. Eagles is one of those bands that gets a lot of attention, but it is really well deserved. I like track 3 a lot too, it is a little less melodic than the first two tracks but I think it adds a nice touch of diverse sound into the album. Track 4 has no lyrics. This is a nice ballad, I like it a lot. This album has been really good so far, maybe it will be five stars. The guitar at the beginning of track 5 is very attractive. There are also no lyrics for this track, which is honestly surprising considering this is a pretty popular album. Track 6 is another really good ballad. Track 7 is also pretty slow and very good. I have no complaints for this album so far, it is a classic. Track 8 has a very Beach Boy sound, but it sounds nice. I think they pull it off in their own way. Track 9 is probably my favorite on this album as of right now. Track 10 was also really good. Honestly, I have no bad notes on this album. I think track 3 was my least favorite but it was still really good. I am happy to have my first five star album!!
Jane's Addiction
3/5
I have heard of this band before but I do not believe I have listened to their music so I am excited to get into it. I like the sound of track 1, it just feels like it is missing something though and I am not quite sure what. I like the transition that happens around the 2-minute mark, I might retract my previous statement about it missing something; I feel like this is what it needed. It is kind of hard to pinpoint an initial genre. I feel like "rock" is so vague. I think I like track 2 less than track 1. It definitely has more of a punk vibe to it. The guitar solo in track 3 is amazing, I think I am just very iffy about punk rock as a whole. I like track 4 a lot. It is probably my favorite on the album so far. Track 5 is also really good. It is the most listened to song on the album and I can see why. My only notes for track 6 is that it was way too long. Honestly, it is the same for track 6 and I haven't gotten to 7 yet but I am sure it will be the same as well. I think overall, this album started pretty well, and got increasingly boring. I am thinking three stars.
Small Faces
2/5
I have never heard of this band before so I am excited to listen to this. The album is two hours long though so I will only be listening to the first disc. Track 1 has elements that remind me of electronica, along with some that remind me of prog rock. I think this will be an interesting album. After looking up the band, I see that this band later forms into the Faces, with Rod Stewart who's album I listened to earlier this month. I like track 2 a lot, it seems like a very romantic song. I like track 4 a lot, it sounds kind of similar to Oasis in the group sung melodies. Honestly, I am feeling a little bored with this album. The last four tracks are the least listened to on the album, so I am half convinced to not even bother listening to them. I think I have pretty much made up my mind about this being a two star album anyway.
Electric Light Orchestra
5/5
I am confused as to how I missed this album, but it does not matter that much I guess. Maybe it just refreshed before it says it is supposed to and the current album is actually tomorrow's album. Either way, I am listening to the other one tomorrow. Track 1 of this album is pretty good, I have heard "Mr. Blue Sky" by this band before and I like it a lot. Track 2 is also pretty good, I think I like it more than track 1. Track 3 is also really good, I am liking this album a lot so far. It just sounds like they translated the joys of dopamine into music. I do not like track 4 as much, but it is still good. Track 5 is good. Track 6 is also pretty good, I feel like I do not have much to critique about this album. It is just a nice, easy listen. Track 7 was okay, definitely not one of my favorites but still good. Track 8 was short with little to no lyrics, but I still enjoyed it a lot. Track 9 is definitely my favorite song on the album so far. Honestly, I am exhausted today but I like this album a lot. Definitely 5 stars.
