Popular Reviews

Blackstar by David Bowie

Hard to compete with happy nostalgic memories of earlier Bowie songs. Another album elevated by its place and moment in time. My favorite parts here are the moody saxophone parts

All Things Must Pass by George Harrison
May 21 2026

Long and varied, like going on an adventure. Doesn't have any really strong singles

Dummy by Portishead
May 22 2026

One of my favorite albums. Feels like being alone in the night. Never realized it was categorized as trip-hop

The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velvet Underground
May 23 2026

Good, but I couldn't shake the feeling that it sounds dated and that I "should" enjoy it more. Actively unpleasant at times, but kind of the point of the art message

Blackstar by David Bowie
May 23 2026

Hard to compete with happy nostalgic memories of earlier Bowie songs. Another album elevated by its place and moment in time. My favorite parts here are the moody saxophone parts

My Generation by The Who
May 24 2026

Fun. I'd never heard the title track with the vocals stuttering before

In Rainbows by Radiohead
May 26 2026

Jigsaw falling pushes this one past a four

The Undertones by The Undertones
May 27 2026

Fun. Sounds like a skateboarding album, but nothing I'm eager to revisit

Paul Simon by Paul Simon
May 28 2026

Just ok; was the first album in this journey that didn't keep my attention. The parts straying into other genres are what did stand out

Songs Of Leonard Cohen by Leonard Cohen
May 29 2026

I'm not really interested in scrutinizing the lyrics, might be higher or lower

May 30 2026

Given the pop culture image of Dylan being incomprehensible, him squeezing in so many words while still being melodic is amazing. I shouldn't have put off listening to his work for so long

Machine Head by Deep Purple
Jun 01 2026

Despite how familiar I am with highway star it gave me goosebumps this time, so gotta go with five even if there's some downtime in this album

Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel
Jun 02 2026

Some classics but also some strange parts

Hot Fuss by The Killers
Jun 04 2026

I liked it enough to buy the album at the time, the singles are still good and have their place as popular karaoke options, but it ms near the bottom in my list of songs to return to

Scream, Dracula, Scream by Rocket From The Crypt
Jun 05 2026

New to me; fun, but nothing really stood out to me on it

Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem
Jun 06 2026

The radio singles are still great, but the repiditive parts detract

The Specials by The Specials
Jun 07 2026

Cover made me expect a predecessor to the mighty mighty bosstones and was not disappointed

Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
Jun 08 2026

Even after listening to the full album I haven't pinned down exactly why I don't like Winehouse's songs. Some combination of the lyrics and/or trappings of soul. The single exception is Back to Black, which is an excellent song

Heaven Or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins
Jun 09 2026

Very melodic, could see myself listening to it again

C'est Chic by CHIC
Jun 10 2026

Le Freak is a classic, but it's the only song on the album that I'd want to revisit. The rest is ok

Paranoid by Black Sabbath
Jun 11 2026

Great songs, like the earlier Deep Purple album, Paranoid pushes this one past a four for me

Reggatta De Blanc by The Police
Jun 12 2026

Decent songs, really ruined by excessive ads from trying a different platform for listening. Familiar with a few already, not wanting to go back to

Superfly by Curtis Mayfield
Jun 13 2026

Sounds from the 70s but doesn't feel dated often

The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails
Jun 14 2026

Hurt alone could make this 5 stars for me, but it even fits well within the story of the album. Still don't fully get into the industrial metal parts

Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson
Jun 15 2026

First country album in this journal. Good, but another case where I think the lyrics are important to its impact. It really didn't help that the first of such albums put me off it with talking about masters and pretty girls, so while I'm not going to do lyric analysis factor context and history into my ratings, I will try to listen more attentively again in the future

Ellington at Newport by Duke Ellington
Jun 16 2026

Good, but could do without the occasional obnoxious trumpet and the crowd noise that gets more prominent later in

Jun 17 2026

I appreciate the talent behind the falsetto, but it didn't make the listening experience better - almost brought it down to a two

D by White Denim
Jun 18 2026

Glad to have learned about this band, hadn't heard of them before and am interested in checking out more of their music.

Document by R.E.M.
Jun 19 2026

Some classic hits, but I've heard them enough

The Man Machine by Kraftwerk
Jun 20 2026

A German proto blue man group? Nice

Violent Femmes by Violent Femmes
Jun 21 2026

Never realized this was an 80s album. Held up great in the 90s and today. Given that listening made me smile a few times and sing along a few times, going higher than four

Jun 22 2026

I like Maggie May, but don't get how this album topped the charts. Sounds fine but average to me

In A Silent Way by Miles Davis
Jun 23 2026

Enjoyed it all the way through, but there were not any parts I specifically wanted to relisten to

Group Sex by Circle Jerks
Jun 24 2026

Its ok, but when I think it is getting repetitive multiple times in its only 15 minutes that's a problem

S.F. Sorrow by The Pretty Things
Jun 25 2026

Was debating between 3 and 4; Loneliest Person was a strong finish that gave me goosebumps on the first listen

Catch A Fire by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Jun 26 2026

Not much for me to say about this one, I've yet to really like any reggae music but didn't dislike this

Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen
Jun 27 2026

The single Born to Run is good, but not feeling anything special for the rest. Maybe the mumbled lyrics elevate it?

The Idiot by Iggy Pop
Jun 28 2026

Great throughout. Floored by the middle of China girl and held up on second listen

Future Days by Can
Jun 29 2026

Feels a bit like jazz. I like it but nothing I really latch onto. Interesting to me that it is another German band that reminds me of Blue Man Group

Hail To the Thief by Radiohead
Jun 30 2026

I do like There There, but not enough to bump this up to a 4

Truth And Soul by Fishbone
Jul 01 2026

Changes was pretty catchy. Lots of variety and talent on display, but not feeling like listening again soon

Jul 02 2026

Haven't heard Someone Somewhere in a while, still great so surprised it does show up more on 80s radio stations. Ot quite enough to push the album up to 4

Jul 03 2026

Never heard of The Zutons, so the answer I guess is the Atlantic Ocean. Pleasant, but I don't see why they are on this list

Fear Of Music by Talking Heads
Jul 04 2026

Listening experience was a little disjointed due to a bad internet connection. No particular complaints or compliments about the music itself. A little sad to have a typo in previous journal entry

On The Beach by Neil Young
Jul 05 2026

Another one that I am probably underrated due to listening to it in the background

A Love Supreme by John Coltrane
Jul 06 2026

Impressive, but the discord was just too much for me this time

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
Jul 07 2026

Has several great and classic songs, but doesn't quite reach the top for me

Rising Above Bedlam by Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
Jul 08 2026

All of the place, not unpleasant, but overstays it's welcome

Jul 09 2026

Seemed average at first, but I ended up liking a couple of songs enough to listen to again. Second time wasn't as interested

Meat Puppets II by Meat Puppets
Jul 10 2026

Haven't heard Lake of Fire in years. I don't recall the vocals being so rough. Ok overall

Ill Communication by Beastie Boys
Jul 11 2026

A couple of excellent songs in a genre that's very hit or miss for me. Rating is really a of 5, 4, and 2

Music by Madonna
Jul 12 2026

I like some Madonna songs, but definitely not these ones. Feels both of the 00's and dated, but it is 2026...

Gold by Ryan Adams
Jul 13 2026

Maybe at a different time I'd feel differently, but I had little to no interest on these songs. Every time I got the idea in about 20 seconds but there was 4-9 minutes of the same every song. All pop, no risk, no edge. Some of it had chill vibes, but too much here doesn't work for me

Home Is Where The Music Is by Hugh Masekela
Jul 14 2026

Another jazz album I enjoyed. Not much to say except for the inclusion of a song with what sounds like African tribal lyrics which I've not heard within jazz before

Mothership Connection by Parliament
Jul 15 2026

Music is great. The chat over it is OK sometimes and way too campy at others

Traffic by Traffic
Jul 16 2026

It was fine

Jul 18 2026

I only recognized about one song on the album; rest weren't all that spectacular so makes sense they wouldn't get ad much play

90 by 808 State
Jul 20 2026

Nice to have another positive discovery day, but I still haven't gotten around to looking up more work from the previous one I was more enthusiastic about

21 by Adele
Jul 21 2026

I like some Adele songs, but not any of these ones. The cure cover was almost enough to drag this down to a one

Brutal Youth by Elvis Costello
Jul 22 2026

It's OK, not much to say

Can't Buy A Thrill by Steely Dan
Jul 25 2026

Was thinking this would mostly be new to me, but I've heard a number of these before, being classic rocks hits. A good listen and one I'd do again but didn't find anything new that really caught my attention

Younger Than Yesterday by The Byrds
Jul 26 2026

A couple of wtf were they thinking moments, but an ok listen overall

Fifth Dimension by The Byrds
Jul 27 2026

Two Byrds in a row. This one was a little better

Jul 28 2026

Since my entries aren't history reports this isn't an automatic 5. I do enjoy some of the songs, but on a second listen some are a bit repetitive and overstay their welcome

The Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground
Jul 29 2026

Back to back albums with ground breaking ideas that have been superceded by later works. Best parts still hold up well

Justified by Justin Timberlake
Jul 30 2026

Ugh, multiple skips needed. One good track keeps this out of the very bottom, but I'm not even interested to look up the title of that track given the minefield the rest of the album is

Cheap Thrills by Big Brother & The Holding Company
Aug 01 2026

Started good, but towards the end I began to find the singing to be getting grating

Ogden's Nut Gone Flake by Small Faces
Aug 02 2026

A fun discovery for me, might be a band I'd like to hear more from

Skylarking by XTC
Aug 03 2026

Was thinking this was entirely new to me, then Dear God came on. An enjoyable listen overall

Beauty And The Beat by The Go-Go's
Aug 04 2026

Great new wave. While I probably won't go seeking out more of their albums, going higher than 3, and since there's no half stars that'll be a 4

This Year's Model by Elvis Costello & The Attractions
Aug 05 2026

Ok; didn't enjoy it as much as his one that came up for me earlier, but not bad

Tonight's The Night by Neil Young
Aug 06 2026

Well, it's folk or country music that I didn't dislike, so respect given

Rings Around The World by Super Furry Animals
Aug 07 2026

Can easily place this in the 00's even though it is new to me. The title track stood out to me, but otherwise average

Murmur by R.E.M.
Aug 08 2026

Maybe ahead of it's time, but nothing stood out to me on this album

Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear
Aug 10 2026

Mostly new to me, but nothing I want to return to outside of the single I already knew

Raising Hell by Run-D.M.C.
Aug 11 2026

No plans to listen to the whole album again, but definitely not the last time I want to listen to Tricky

Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
Aug 12 2026

Finally a case where my listening, not context, evaluation has to be subverted. Fitting that it came up on a day with heavy thunderstorms. Where most performances feel more hollow when paying close attention to the details, this not only feels more genuine but melodies can be found that aren't present when listening as background music. Might be a five someday, but not quite there for me yet

Vivid by Living Colour
Aug 13 2026

Haven't heard the album outside of cult of personality. Mostly good, but glamor boys was almost a skip

Licensed To Ill by Beastie Boys
Aug 14 2026

Some iconic tracks but not everything lands for me
