Album Summary

The Coral is the debut studio album by British rock band the Coral. It was released on 29 July 2002, through the Deltasonic record label. After finalising their line-up, the band had a residency at The Cavern Club, and were spotted and signed by Alan Willis of Deltasonic soon afterwards. Following the release of a single and an EP, and two UK tours, the band began recording their debut album. Sessions were held at Linford Manor Studios, Milton Keynes in early 2002, and were produced by the Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie and the Coral. Described as a neo-psychedelia and folk rock album, frontman James Skelly's voice was compared to Eric Burdon of the Animals and Jim Morrison of the Doors.

Sensational album with two songs added to my rotation; psychedelic ska and I'm getting a serious Monkey Island OST feeling listening to this. Shadows Fall is the standout. 4.

Kinda feels like They Might Be Giants' version of The Mollusk (Ween) First discovery of the list for me :) I really enjoyed it

Good intentions towards passionate tastes, a decent band with fancy production, music makeweight, psychedelic tropes laid without imagination, a well-made novelty: for a time in the early part of this millennium, every other new band thrown my way felt something like this.

Throwback scally psychedelia; to the later '60s as The La's are to the earlier part (if a decade earlier and with much greater inspiration). Doesn't excite me, "Dreaming Of You" is by far the highlight, although considerately brief. They're described as being "young" but they're almost my age, perhaps "immature"? The sound of too much weed and too little concentration.

I'm pretty sure I've neither heard of nor heard anything by The Coral before this album, which always adds a bit of mystery to the prospect, and thankfully a rewarding experience. It's all over the place musically, which works in a quirky way, although I'd have enjoyed a little more range than just 60s-inspired songs, and perhaps a little fewer far-ranging styles within a single song. But they do it all really well, and if the videos for their singles are any indication ("Dreaming of you", "Goodbye" and "Skeleton key"), they seem to be genuinely having a good time making fun music. My favorites were probably the opener "Spanish main", "Simon Diamond", "Waiting for the heartaches" and the hidden track "Time travel", but more importantly there aren't any duds across this impressive debut album. (I'll admit I kept hoping to find out they were from the Isle of Wight--the land of fun and quirky bands, it seems--but instead they came from the exotic wastelands of Wirral Peninsula in NW England.)

I loved the 60's vibe and intensity to this album; at times I thought of the Animals and at other times of Jacques Brel--almost as if the songs were part of a musical. A little all over the place but I am digging this new-to-me music quite a bit.

super bad evil people will enjoy it

(1/5) So, would you like some warm ketchup on your lemon sorbet? It was pan seared by our best soux chef who is well known for his waygu beef entree, and it's served on a bed of pea gravel dipped in motor oil. What in the actual fuck is wrong with this list. Anglo-centrism (autocorrect has my number, now that I've thrown it around too much. That word pops up as soon as "Anglo.." is typed in...) strikes again. This assault of mediocrity in the form of lanky, disshelved English wankers and their "interpretations" of other music is borderline offensive. This is garbage music, and doesn't deserve a listen let alone a nod in a list that is supposedly music you **must hear before you die**. The first half was just bleh. A slightly confused effort at some reggae and ska inspired rock. It would have received a '2' if they had stayed the course. Just mediocre. The second half tipped the rest of the album directly into the rubbish bin (take that you bloody queue loving sods! Bite. My. Chips.) as of "Waiting for the Heartaches". Each song got progressively worse after that one. It sounds like they had some ideas, but absolutely no direction and little talent to pull it off. They blended various styles poorly and served it up as if it was worth listening to. Just throw it all on the plate! Someone will eat it. A few thousand English fans might. Not me.. This Britpop bullshit is a hard swallow and I'm dreading more of it, as I know the list is lousy with it. Eyeballing my "skipped this album" pass for the next one. I'm a long distance runner and I'm no stranger to discomfort and pushing myself in spite of it, but this aural assault is trying my patience.

What a mess. One big forgettable mess. Growing up in the 1990s, let me and my friend be witness to such a diverse buffet of music. Then as the 1990s went on and into the 2000s access to a wide range of music seemed to always increase. So it’s no wonder that in the 2000s you get these acts that seem to bust at the seams with musical influences from across all genres. This we have The Coral. Seriously, the influence section on Wikipedia for this album includes Van Morrison Echo and the Bunnymen Traditional Russian music Nick Cave Dr. Dre Ennio Morricone And that was just the first paragraph. It’s too much, too unfocused. And it shows in the music. This album is more concerned with “Oh, listen to this.” too often. I’m left once again questioning the entire process for inclusion on this list. Are we going to listen to every album ever nominated for the Mercury Music Prize? This album probably merits a two in my opinion. I didn’t hate it at first and it had 2-3 tracks that were serviceable. However, within the context of this list, I’m docking it a point. Musing on it later in the day though got me grumpy. Even the parts I liked felt misused and by accident. Thankfully, it only clocked in at 35 minutes.

Another band that I've never even heard of before, and was therefore a little surprised to learn that they have 12 albums released with one on the way. Listening to this made that fact even more befuddling. There were a number of bands in the early 2000s who made a great deal of hay from emulating classis rock acts (Jet, Wolfmother, The Hives, etc), and this immediately struck me as in that vein. But while most of those were a bit more polished and focused, these guys were... Not. With big doses of The Doors, Deep Purple, The Beach Boys, The Mokees, and god knows how many other influences all evident throughout, the result was just a jumbled and often chaotic mess. There were parts of this that I wanted to like, with Dreaming of You as a noticable highlight, but the overall jangly and chaotic composition did it no favors. It's a very generous 2/5 for me, mostly because this list has taught me the true meaning of 1 star.

Variety: 3 Adequacy: 1 Listenability: 1 Uniqueness: 1 Emotionality: 1 = 1.4 rounded down to a 1 "You know I'm bad, I'm bad (bad, bad)/ You know it (really, really bad)" A band I have absolutely no memory of ever even hearing of. The ones we go into completely blind have been few and far between, but I'm always a little bit more excited to jump into one of these. The unfamiliarity makes it more likely I can go in fresh with no biases. I see that this albums is classified as neo-psychedelic folk rock. Weirdly they have quite a few things in common with our last band. I can roll with that. THE TRACKS "Spanish Main" - Right away living up to the psych rep. Not a fan of those vocals though. Production-wise this has that overly clean sound from this era that I'm not the biggest fan of. Kind of hard to pin down exactly, but it feels flat, like EVERYTHING is pulled forward in the mix so it loses any depth. Scrubbed of any naturalness. The Black Keys are a big offender in this regard as well. Not a great start. "I Remember When" - Is this a concept album? That's two sea-adjacent songs in a row, with this one briefly dipping into sea shanty world at one point near the end. This is much more successful, but the mix is still pretty flat. Musically though there are a lot of interesting things going on here. Kind of a grab bag of sounds and influences here, including some Doors. Spoon was doing some similar genre omnivore stuff around then, but were a bit better at it to my memory. This is decent enough though. "Shadows Fall" - This is much more my speed. Some Specials vibes here as we get a reggae beat, with still more sea shanty vibes. They even go into a ska breakdown in the middle. The kitchen sink approach done well. "Dreaming of You" - This one comes in hot with a galloping oompah beat that sounds eerily like the opening of "You're the One That I Want" from Grease, and then immediately turns into a sort of Animals sounding thing. Reminded once again of Spoon here, but this one is on par with that band's stuff. Very good stuff. "Simon Diamond" - The Simon and Garfunkel opening was a sharp left turn, but it then goes into a Kinks-ish kind of story rock but of whimsy. This was ok. "Goodbye" - Hollow sounding garage psych rock number that feels like much more of a straight throwback than anything yet. Could easily imagine his on an Animals or early Doors album if it had some more texture to it. Very solid pastiche up until the proggy breakdown, but it swings back again in time to save itself. "Waiting for the Heartaches" - Let's slow waaaaaaay down for some more Specials influenced fare. It quickly loses any ska revival overtones for the chorus though, and ends up feeling like too much of a Frankenstein's monster. "Skeleton Key"- More sea shanty business I guess? This one was HARD listen. Discordant and as unmelodic as they've been. Thumbs way down. Not even the trippy haunted music box breakdown could save this. And I LOVE that kind of shit. BOOOOOOO! "Wildfire" - This was more on point. But not by much. "Bad Man" - Yikes. So we're getting some death throes of swing revival dregs too? Maybe? It sort of doesn't know what it wants to be, like a lot of this album. This was garbage. "Calendars and Clocks"/ "Time Travel" - Thanks goodness for the swing back into sub-Spoon indie rock eclecticism. Absolutely nothing special going on here, but benefits greatly by comparison to the last one. But not even the spaghetti western aspirations can save this. HIGHLIGHTS - "Shadows Fall" - "Dreaming of You" MIDLIGHTS - "I Remember When" - "Simon Diamond" - "Goodbye" LOWLIGHTS - "Spanish Main" - "Waiting for the Heartaches" - "Skeleton Key" - "Wildfire" - "Bad Man" - "Calendars and Clocks" FINAL THOUGHTS The back half of this especially was ROUGH. While I can appreciate the variety, the dips into multiple genres within a single song was a bit much at times, and would have liked to have seen some more straight up attempts at emulating a single sound. "Goodbye" almost had this down, but could not follow through. These seem like guys who just wanted to cram way too many ideas into their debut. And not only were they let down by their too-big ideas, but the production on this did them no favors. It looks like they have a pretty long career after this, and normally I would not be opposed to checking out some of their later stuff in the hopes that they eventually found and settled on a voice, but the stink of this one makes that one an unlikely scenario. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - Even those highlights are not anything I'd probably keep around. FURTHER LISTENING - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga by Spoon - La folie by The Stranglers - When I Was Born for the 7th Time by Cornershop

Ugh! Man - take a time machine back to 1968. This is so not relevant

I grew up on Scrubs. I'm pavlov-trained to have Big Feels about Dreaming of You. it's like a secret government agent activation phrase for me. DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA HOW MUCH IT TAKES to make me hate a record that has this track on? THAT is the extent of this record's vileness.

There is so much going on here, and I am into it. It balances this classic rock swagger with some genuinely creative choices. You get these bizarre sea shanty vibes mixed with garage rock, which sounds insane on paper. Just lively and full of ideas. It’s catchy as hell, too. I missed this band in the early 2000s. Pretty interesting. Nothing grabbed me as a must listen again type of song. But there was a Bari sax, so that's cool.

Ok British rock is now getting judged harsher than any other genre. I can’t take it anymore. I think I’m entering psychosis. Agree w the review that said there were cool parts to each song but they veer off and become lame.

The Coral was a surprisingly really good album. I didn't really come in with much expectations because i didn't scout ahead when it came to this album but i was sure in for a fun surprise when i did listen to this album. James Skelly's voice was apparently heavily compared to Jim Morrison of The Doors and i not only can see that but i see a lot of similarities with them in the music department too. That music is incredibly weird and very varied as were the vocals, and that's why i loved them so much. Granted, i don't think this album is perfect, there are a few vocal bits that i wasn't really a fan of which is why it barely missed getting 5 stars but it was still an absolutely great listen. Best Song: Shadows Fall Worst Song: Simon Diamond

I never got into this album

Early 2000s indie rock with late 60s early 70s influence. Vocal harmonies, keyboards. Not sure what to think, maybe on second listen.

Definitely not for me - it's rare I find myself fighting the urge to skip songs, but nearly every track was a bummer. The melodies, harmony, and rhythm were all unimaginative and bland. All of the performances, from the vocals to the guitars, were at best uninspired and at worst obnoxious off-putting, lacking any sort of subtlety, and I really am not a fan of the mix. Probably a fun band to see live back in the day, but that doesn't translate to a great or even a good album.

When the wine soaked jambouree has wound down, and you wipe that improv actresses' make up off your cheek, pick up your sweat soaked shirt from off the chandelier, and stumble into the street, as you stagger between the dawn lit garbage collectors, stray cats and early morning joggers whose presence evokes both guilt and pity, and struggle as you may to stay up on your feet, the sound of Shadows Fall still ringing in your ears, of all the poor decisions you'll be questioning from that night, including The Coral on the list of 1001 must listen albums won't be one of them, cause you gotta do what you can when you're a bad man!

It's listenable enough. But it's also incredibly forgettable. I can't imagine a scenario when I would listen to this album a second time

Squarely of a time. I'm leaving it there.

The Coral I loved this album when it came out and although I never totally stuck with them after Magic and Medicine I love the song Lover Undiscovered from the Coral Island album a few years ago, and I really like Bill Ryder-Jones solo stuff. I still really like the kitchen sink approach, all their influences all jammed together. Rather than selectively magpieing what they like, I get the sense they thought this might be their only record so just chucked everything in - Beefheart, Love, 60s psychedelia, Madness, Beatles, sea shanties, the Doors, folk. How you feel about the end result probably depends on how much charm you find in that approach, but do find it very wonkily engaging, never stopping in one place, and all tied together with open mindedness, some great rough hewn musicality and some lovely psychedelic-indie guitar. I like how Spanish Main frames the album as a psychedelic cosmic voyage through all their influences, and while not every song works totally, none of them are boring and some of them are absolutely fantastic. I Remember When’s Doors-eque croon moving into the uptempo is excellent and Shadows Fall’s psychedelic ska is woozily great. Dreaming of You is still superb, the bass and organ are superb together and it's a great melody with lovely harmonies. I love the S&G lifting folky vibe of Simon Diamond, the reverb slide and seaside organ give it a great atmosphere, along with the amusing lyrics. Goodbye is superb, Bill Ryder-Jones late 60s riffing and tremolo parts are lovely and it’s another great melody and set of backing vocals. Even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of that first half thereafter it’s still a very enjoyable and interesting listen, and I love Skeleton Key and Bad Man’s scouse Beefheart-ness, and Calendars and Clocks ends things in a suitably wide running way. There is a definitely a touch of early 2000s to it but it has held up better than many of their peers in the post Britpop/early 2000s indie scene, not only does it have a pleasing scatterbrain eclecticism it also has a lovely eccentricity to it, which means it still sounds interesting and very loveable 23 years on. It does fade a bit in the back half but it’s still a great album and a mid-high 4. 🪸🪸🪸🪸 Playlist submission: Goodbye

The Coral's S/T album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize the day after it was released, because of course it was. Early 2000s nominees for the Mercury Prize are a notorious but reliable indicator of over-hyped rubbish. An overview of reviews shows that the UK press -- the NME and the Guardian and the BBC and blah blah blah -- all seemed to fall over themselves hyping this album. But here's how I know this record is going to be rubbish -- let's look at the number of different bands/genres that wikipedia says this album sounds like or was based on; neo-psychedelia, folk rock, Eric Burdon of the Animals, Jim Morrison of the Doors, Can, Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask replica", Kraftwerk, pirates singing on a ship, Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic", Echo & The Bunnymen "Ocean Rain", bad dance music, techno, happy hardcore, traditional Russian music, Nick Cave, Dr Dre, Ennio Morricone soundtracks, Spaghetti western films, reggae, doo wop, Merseybeat, psychedelic sea shanties, punk rock, the Ex, the Nuggets compilations, the Zombies, Frank Zappa, Middle Eastern music, house music, The Teardrop Explodes, Button Moon (a UK kids TV show, I think?), old blues murder ballads, weird Americana, Waring's Pennsylvanians, Beck's "Mutations", Spanish folk, Frank Sinatra, and the Wailers. I mean, what a fucking mess. It's overhyped, unfocussed and derivative pablum that hasn't stood the test of time. But at least it's short.

Amazing! Dreaming of you is a timeless classic, but "Waiting for the Heartaches" totally got me! 9.5/10

Forward looking retro! Here's an album that builds on the past yet has its own distinct voice. Listened multiple times. LOVE IT.

A solid, enjoyable listen. Part of me feels like it was lacking just a little bit of oomph for it to be truly memorable, but overall, great instrumentals and good vocal work. 'Dreaming of You' was my fave.

Day 7: The Coral - The Coral. The Coral released an album that somewhat perplexes me. It's somewhat difficult to wrap my finger around what I just heard. It reminds me of circus music. I also feel bard music vibes and musical theatre music vibes at the same time. I can't tell if this album is secretly genius, or just boring and uninteresting. Is this Britpop? It doesn't sound like Britpop. Upon reading the reviews of this album, it does appear that it isn't very well-received. Neither was Kollaps, but that is an awesome album. Well, this album was removed from the list. However, so was Medúlla, and that album is also awesome. It seems like The Coral have a form of artistic vision that is difficult to see. They feel like one of those bands that you either don't get, or make you salivate over the thought of buying the band members' toenail clippings. Whatever, three stars it is. Personal Enjoyment: 3/5. How Much It Belongs Here: 2/5.

I recognized the song "Dreaming of You" from the vast Rock Band library I share with my husband. That was the only song I was familiar with. Overall I can say I liked this, although I don't know yet how much. I think I'm going to leave it on my phone and listen to it again in a few weeks. I could see myself really enjoying this with a few more listens, but I can't say for sure. Nice to hear something with more of an original sound!

Spanish main, Dreaming of you... todas son excelentes. Con ecos de Love, The Byrds, Teenage fanclub, Kinks, Small faces, The LA´s... pocos grupos están a la altura: Ladybug transistor, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Super Furry Animals...

This is the first one that has popped up that I don't actually own--nor have ever heard before. Weird how a seemingly popular album like that just can be completely missed out on. As for my thoughts...I dunno. It's interesting. But not terribly so. It's...fine? I'm honestly not sure why this is on the list other than it seems England was particularly enamored with this one. Glad I heard it. But I doubt I'll bother ever giving it another listen. It's not bad. Just not all that memorable to me. 2 stars. It's not BAD. But for being one of the 1001, this is just pretty boring.

Lovely record!

10/10 scouse magic. Pure me. 10/10

Loved it! A great combination of energy similar to other modern rock bands with an old timy sense of creativity. The singer sounds like a proper rock star, and the band always rocks, sometimes reminding me of the specials and then jumping to Arctic Monkeys and then Green Day and then the Doors.

Seen the album cover but had never listened to one single song that I could remember. They were not big enough to reach my hone country. Although I lable it indie rock their style of old school rock and country and a hint reagge dub made me instantly love this album. It hooked me on the first song and has gotten better after that. Albums like this are the reason Im doing the 1001 album thing cause we cant know everything and we cant listen to all the music. This is a great example for me of an unknown band to instant playlist material.

I like beats like their beats. But it lacks the spark. Even their best song from this album lacks it. I think there are better albums. 2.5/5.

Part of what made me love this was maybe the surprise? But it was great and I'm definitely going to listen to it again. And the spotify radio station that played at the end was freaking bitching.

Based on the Wikipedia article, my expectations going in weren't great, but this was a very pleasant surprise. I'm not even sure if I would call the psychedelic, since this is the rare case of psychedelia feeling whimsical rather than just weird (with varying degrees of uncomfortableness). But what really impressed me was the breadth of experimentation and yet, everything sounded organic and accomplished. The only track I was on the fence about was Skeleton Key, but even that one was still OK. A great album with simply good music, in an impressive amount of different shades of rock.

Cover art: what is this? A high school project? I wouldn't be surprised if I find out this collage was made with scissors and a glue stick. Historically the weird covers have been British, but we'll see. British rock band again and it was another pretty good album. Just as I was getting in to the first track it ended abruptly, which as I checked the run time to confirm something didn't happen I thought 'was that meant to tease me and leave me wanting more?' either way it worked. Throughout the rest of the album I kept trying to place what it reminded me of, and the only specifics I could come up with was that it was an older style rock. Some influences even back to the 60s but with modern instruments and techniques. "goodbye" is an example of what I'm talking about. I don't think there was really a song I wanted to skip, pretty solid overall. Favorite track "I remember when" 4/5

Not even in the best 1001 albums of 2002.

The algorithm is in a foul mood. The only explanation for this appearing on the list is for everyone to hear what a horrible album sounds like. It turns out this album WAS bumped off the list on the latest edition, a wrong that I hope this generator corrects as well. Perhaps this band got better with future albums, but I don't intend to test that possibility. There are parts of a lot of songs that sound great, only to suddenly veer off into an annoying direction. I'm going to want those 34 minutes and 32 seconds back before I die. What a snooze.

starting to dread hitting my submit button and seeing the random ass band I definitely do not need to hear before I die

Jesus, the bar must have been set lower than I thought for what constitutes the top 1,001 albums of all time

It's 2002. Rock is back again baby! Here comes another "The" band ready to ride the hype train with a fresh take on an aging genre. But what comes next is more than unexpected, it's sea shanties. It's polka, reggae, klezmer, and punk. It's not very good. It's The Coral. Their name evokes tropical seas. They are a pirates, sailing from foreign land to foreign land, stealing the unique musical riches of each country, pillaging the local harvest, and shitting it all onto a record. D Postscript: In my ever-increasing musical nationalism I'll point out that these dudes are British, talented, likely white, and possibly tone deaf to the fact they're "borrowing" music from the queen's former colonies

Really surprised this is in the list

My first 5 from something I've never heard a lick about beforehand. Very enjoyable psych-influenced indie, with a little polka and ska for good measure.

I had heard one song from this, and always liked it. Turns out the rest of the album is even better. I love this! It's an easy listen, fun, melodic, and rocks out. I wasn't expecting this to be so good. A very nice surprise.

Wow, that was a real piece of shit. Why the fuck is this on the list? Are the Coral like the genreless Ween band of the UK? Good musicians who don’t have any taste. They mashed up tons of my least favorite, annoying experimental genre rock: Gogol Bordello, Ska, Arctic Monkeys and Nick Cave. There’s a couple of moments, moments, where there’s some very Oh Sees inflected guitar effects, maybe they were an influence. Maybe they deserve credit for that? I hated this album. Wish I could give it a Zero. All that after I was excited by the album cover. Yuck.

I was really surprised that there was a band that was prolific, part of the early 2000's rock revival, and enjoyable to listen to that I had never heard of. These guys really felt unique amongst many of their peers, and I see why they made this list, even though either I am just ignorant of they didn't achieve nearly the fame of bands like The White Stripes or The Strokes. My Personal Enjoyment: 4/5 Did it belong on this list: 4.5/5

Nothing great about this album . Not terrible but not memorable in the least

Wow, fell in love during the first couple of songs

If Syd Barret era Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones had a baby that was raised by the rest of the 60's, you would have this album.

I had heard one song from this, and always liked it. Turns out the rest of the album is even better. I love this! It's an easy listen, fun, melodic, and rocks out. I wasn't expecting this to be so good. A very nice surprise.

This is a weird album, and I kind of love it. The opening track, "Spanish Main", is definitely my favorite: it's a psychedelic rock sea shanty, and I would listen to a whole album of songs like it. Unfortunately, this album is not that and the rest of it is more of a psychedelic folk rock album. Still, the highlights of this album more than make up for the lowlights and it's well worth checking out for anybody who wants to hear some stuff they've never heard before

Wasn't a fan. 1/5 stars.

Made me want to cry in bed. A+ original and interesting.

Never heard of this band before but love their sound. Cant wait to listen to more of their music!

Never heard this - like Gomez and burning spear fronted by a rabbi

OK, not great but listenable. They very clearly knew their audience and stayed true to their craft. I confess that a few of the loops were catchy.

Decent 60s retro british rock band without sounding like a copy of the bands of the era. A panacea of folk, psychedelia, merseybeat revival and some sea shanties thrown in for good measure. Cool band.

It gets a second star just for dreaming of you

I really enjoyed this at first, and I think the first two songs (Spanish Main and I Remember When) are the best on the album. After that, though, this devolves into a weird mix of rock-based polka and sea shanties? It's weird, and it's often not good. Not sure why it's on this list at all.

Ooh. This is a blast from the past. Natives of a uni housemates homeland (the Wirral) which is an interesting geographical feature. I didn't listen to the album at the time but I know the singles. ------------------------------ Jingly indie ska meets 60s psych. This feels like an album born from the Wirral. I've only been once but it felt kinda strange. Costal, isolated but with Liverpool a stones throw away. That geography seeps into their music with the Beatles and folk/shanty tunes crashing into early 00s indie. There's some serious jams on here and often the songs have a breakdown into a ska infused bop that makes me want to move. The second half kinda tapers out after skeleton key, but it's nice to have some dynamism in the music after Oasis yesterday. 4.5* (May round up?)

Was OK but not ground breaking

Pleasant enough indy pop with a couple of good tunes.

It’s an interesting sound but it does feel like something that was made in the 70s, not the 2000s

The best psychedelic, klesmer spaghetti western indie rock album on the list. I’ve always had a soft spot for this. Songs that go everywhere the long way round. Often with multiple songs in about 30 seconds. Real pop hooks with a twist

You time travel to the 17th century to give electric guitars and hard drugs to pirates.

Incredible

Much better than I expected. ★★★

Kinda raw rock

Pretty ok album early 2000s album nothing crazy but decent

I liked The Coral when they first came out - one of the more fun 'The' bands. Certainly more interesting than Killers, Hives, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser, Arctic, Libertines etc etc, but several tiers lesser than The Music and The Delays. But which came first - Dreaming Of You or the Bully Videogame soundtrack? It's a question which has plagued mankind since the dawn of time. While we may never find an answer, what remains true is that both are certified bangers.

Yeahhhh I don’t know I couldn’t get behind this one. I can’t tell exactly what the goal of this album is or the point of it for that matter

Super fun mix of sounds and genres.

Enjoyability: 4/5 - would listen often Production: 5/5 - love the psychadelic aspect of it and can tell they really experimented and enjoyed the process - also really like the spanish taste in wildfire Songs liked: (6/11) x 5 Cohesion: 4/5 - everything does flow into eachother really well Songwriting: 4.5/5 - very story-telling and quite poetic

I was not familiar with this band or any of the songs on the album. It's very eclectic and a little all over the place. A few songs had a 60s or 70s psychedelic sound to them. While I found the album interesting because of it's different sounds, I can't say that I really loved any of the songs. Definitely not enough to save to my favorites playlist and not really enough to seek out anything else by this band. Another one that is a little puzzling as to how it made the list. Not bad to listen to, but nothing special.

Really doesn't sound like an album made in the 2000's, which can be either good or bad, depending on what your criteria are.

Another surprise that I enjoyed! interesting blend if genres- alt rock meets some older psychedelic/progressive sound. Overall- 3.5/5

There's a lot of different stuff going on, not sure if that's a sign of invention or of a mess.

Its alright, i found the first half of the album more fun than the second. Nothing i found particularly interesting on this one but some pretty nice background music.

Catchy hooks abound and every instrumental is very unique! Not a whole ton of songwriting depth. Highlights: "Spanish Main"

A couple of good bangers in there. Dreaming of you will always be a classic

Oh, yay, another random 2000s British indie rock album. For some reason, this is a weird mix of 1960s psychedelic rock and sea shanties-two things that did not need to be mixed. The album is easily one of the worst things I've heard in recent memory, with incredibly annoying songs full of terrible lyrics and grating dynamics. There are very few redeemable songs on this album, and most of it is just straight up awful. Why is this on the list? This album is ranked #11 of 16 albums for 2002 globally. Other 2002 albums rated by me: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots(2/16)-5 Sea Change(6/16)-2 Highly Evolved(11/16)-2 A Little Deeper(15/16)-2 Justified(16/16)-2

This is what Captain Jack Sparrow listens to while he wobbles around on the deck of the Black Pearl (I mean that as a compliment)

Dreaming Of You is an outright classic and one of those songs I always forget about that blows me away when it comes on. Unfortunately I think it sets a bar too high for the rest of the album to live up to. It’s a shame as the rest of the album would be interesting enough with a distinctive throwback feel but I found myself wanting to go back and listen to that one single. Most of this album is 3/5 for me, but that track alone lets me round this up.

This album just kinda comes and goes. I listened to it three times because it’s short enough. Nothing here really sticks with me which is strange because I like this kind of music. I like the doo-woo inspired melodies on Dreaming Of You. Some of this just felt repetitive.

Över lag helt ok, men vissa låtar spårar ur något. Dreaming of you är riktigt bra.

This is one of those "holy shit I never expected that" albums. Yes, this is a fun, fun album. Not for everyone, but what a great ride!!

terrible

Cartoonishly bad. An interesting sub type of album on this list is “albums that came out under ten years before the first edition of the book”. An impossible task, predicting which relatively new albums will have any sort of staying power, but I think Robert Dimery might be especially bad at it. Like who the frick is The Coral, this is so bad lol

I did not have high hopes, knowing as I did the era and genre. I was sadly right: The Coral have 'Dreaming of You', which is catchy and fun, then they have everything else. Musically uninteresting and uninspiring, I wonder sometimes whether some time has to pass before evaluating music so as to avoid being caught up in the hype when the band is topping the charts and all over the radio stations. All but one track on here is unmemorable.

The Doors and the Strokes had a baby that was childhood best friends with Nick Cave. A pretty surprising mixture that leaves me feeling a little less than satisfied with the final result. It's cool, just nothing very special to me.

simultaneously the most interesting/generic indie rock i've heard? Shades of current arctic monkeys weird era, some man man/king khan, even those old 2000's indie rock bands.
