1/1001 The Gun Club 'Fire Of Love' 1981 I'd never heard of this, so had absolutely no preconceptions, other than the cover, and that turned out to be a red herring. There's apparently some cross pollinating with The Bad Seeds. Anyway, I like it. I would describe their sound as psychobilly with a sinister/dark edge. Solid 7/10.

I've not heard of this artist before, but what a tremendous find. American soul music isn't my natural go to, but it's hard to deny greatness when you hear it. JC is an acquired taste, and this album certainly demands a lot of the listener. He's a bit mad really, but I'm here for the experience. 1975. I've no idea who this is, and frankly I've no intention of finding out more. My word this is dull! Over an hour of tediuos charity advert piano music, spread over just for tracks. It got 30mins from me, then a scan of the remaining tracks to find out that they all sounded the same. 1973. This is really quite a decent offering and very much a surprise to my ears. I was always under the impression that TSAHB were proper dad rock, and to be fair there's an element of glam rock, which is to be expected for the time, however there's a smattering of very good tracks, 'The Faith Healer' is excellent. There's also some utter rubbish 'Giddy Up A Ding Dong', as the name suggests, is horrific. Less novelty would make this a better album. 1985. Other than the obvious hits, I'd not heard this before. It's actually quite a good listen, if a bit of commercially over-produced, but such is it's appeal from a time that big power-pop songs were ubiquitous in our every day lives. 1984. I was looking forward to this, and a strong start left me feeling that I'd foolishly overlooked TSC in the past. I like Weller's dip into jazz/jazz funk, which sits well in my ear. However, the second half of the album was a mishmash of differing styles that didn't really belong with each other on the same record, so I probably won't return. 1974 I know 'Dreamer' and seemingly this feels like a standout track on an album I've never heard before. I don't know too much about Supertramp, but this feels like it should and could be a lot more experimental and progression, but instead we get a relatively safe album, full of easy accessible tracks. There's some familiarity with a few tracks, that remain classics, and there's also hints of what they were to become, which is less to my liking. Amazing jazz fusion, which as an 18 year old, opened up my music listening world to alternatives to the mainstream. I still adore this album, and play it regularly, 38 years after first hearing it. 1968 The only Hendrix studio album in my collection, mainly because of 'Crosstown Traffic', a favourite which appears early on. At 75 minutes though, it may be a bit on the long side, but that's a harsh criticism which is offset by some amazing tracks along the way, and what a finish, with 'All Along The Watchtower' and 'Voodoo Chile' (Slight Return). 1971 So, I've got this, and for a while I used to wax lyrical about how Yes should be reverred in a godlike status. The musicianship and technical ability being demonstrated is pure prog. However, whilst I love the opener, 'Roundabout' and the production of the album as a whole. I find, as I've got older, it's all a tad arrogant and self-indulgent, and interludes between the main tracks are simply 'look-at-me' statements for each member of the band. Punk needed to happen. One of the great debut albums of all time and one of the greatest opening tracks too. Supposedly the first ever album to have been associated with the term 'gothic'. Perhaps I was just in the right mood, but this recording is so evocative and atmospheric. It's easy to be there in the room, the smell of tobacco, the drink flowing, the sounds of the fret clicks and string chirps, and the hum of the audience gently murmuring in the background. I can hear the sound that may have influenced a young Zappa too. I'm not a massive fan of live albums, but this feels more like an historical document. I love it. It moves to 'the buy list'.
