1/1001 The Gun Club 'Fire Of Love' 1981 I'd never heard of this, so had absolutely no preconceptions, other than the cover, and that turned out to be a red herring. There's apparently some cross pollinating with The Bad Seeds. Anyway, I like it. I would describe their sound as psychobilly with a sinister/dark edge. Solid 7/10.
Run DMC 'Raising Hell' 1986 Exciting... never heard this before, and I really should have - it's my era. I've not got 'My Adidas' on right now, because it's Converse day 7/10

The first to crop up that I actually have in my collection. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ A solid classic that gets better with age 7/10
I've not heard of this artist before, but what a tremendous find. American soul music isn't my natural go to, but it's hard to deny greatness when you hear it. A couple of tracks I recognised, so not all new to me. 'Eli's Comin'' and 'Stoned Soul Picnic' are bangers. A definate Northern soul feel. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Purchase 🫳 quite possibly Strong ★★★★☆
Somehow I've not heard this, despite owning a few Sabbath albums. Probably going to have to buy it now! Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Purchase ✅️ An easy ★★★★☆
JC is an acquired taste, and this album certainly demands a lot of the listener. He's a bit mad really, but I'm here for the experience. There's some Nick Cave similarities in the songwriting and delivery too. I count myself as a fan, so it's good to reacquaint myself with this release which doesn't get much airplay if I'm honest. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Own ✅️ Solid ★★★☆☆
What is this awful shit and why is it in my ears?! Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ (part) Revisit ❌️ Terrible ★☆☆☆☆ I'd do no stars if it was a thing...
Bloody love this; always have done... Two enormous tracks that I can never get tired of hearing 'L.A. Woman' & 'Riders'
Just no
I don't mind Stevie Wonder, he's responsible for some great music, particularly from the '70s, and I was looking forward to this. Sadly, with the exception of a couple of bangers, which are ace, the album is fairly lame. Proper Radio 2 fare. Also that title...WTF! Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Disappointing ★★☆☆☆
I've heard of this artist, but had no preconceptions going in. Result: this isn't for me. Each track takes an age to get going, and frankly it's just a bit boring. If you take the vocals out of the equation, there's very little left. She is clearly talented, and clearly people like her work, but there's nothing here for me to make me want to return. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ (in part) Revisit ❌️ Underwhelming ★★☆☆☆

I have a low attention span with Bob Dylan. I feel that I should be embracing his work, due to my generation and musical upbringing, but I stop listening fairly quickly, mostly out of boredom. It's OK, he's a talent and influential, but I don't care. Heard before ❌️ feels like I have though Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Bored ★★☆☆☆

19/1001 The Temptations 'All Directions' 1972 Not tempted! 'Papa Was A Rollin' Stone' is a banger though. The rest of the album however... Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Largely passed me by ★★☆☆☆
"So what's this then?" "No idea. It was listed under 1001 albums to listen to before you die" "Must be good then" "Not really, it's a bit shit" "So why are you listening to it?" "Just in case it isn't shit, but turns out it is" Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Forgettable ★☆☆☆☆
1969 A bit twangy for my tastes. It's OK, not my thing, but I get it. I'm not upset by it, and 'Bad Moon Rising' is a tune, although being scarred by endless pub covers bands trying their best to emulate CCR's sound has left me not really needing to hear this again. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Just OK ★★☆☆☆
Not for me. It's really dull. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ❌️ Revisit ❌️ Boring ★★☆☆☆
1994 A very decent Hip-Hop album. I've heard of the Nas, but this is a first exposure for me. I like it. It feels ahead of its time for 1994 - 31 years old!! Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Solid ★★★☆☆
2004 Never got into Arcade Fire. A band that completely passed me by at the time. There's some really good anthemic moments, which I can imagine being awesome in a live setting. Some weak points in the album though probably means I don't go back. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Decent but not amazing ★★★☆☆
1986 Yeah, there's not much for me here. I was hoping for some crowd pleasers, but sadly lacking. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Unremarkable★★☆☆☆
1963 Jazz baby... The Hammond organ gets a proper workout. I like jazz, so this is fine, if a bit 'lounge' in places. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Loungy★★★☆☆
1971 The only Joni Mitchell I've heard before are the overplayed hits from the radio and numerous snippets used in TV ads. I get that there's some meaning, earnest reflection and story telling in the lyrical content, but just a piano or an acoustic guitar for background music results in the whole experience being somewhat one-dimensional. Anyway, got bored and put some metal on. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ (part) Revisit ❌️ Tedius ★★☆☆☆
1970 I was born this year... All the bangers represented. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ (twice today) Revisit ✅️ RIP Ozzy ★★★★★
1980. The only album from TH that I own, mainly because of 'Once In A Lifetime' which is a perfect example of an '80s alternative hit, and so evocative of the times when singles ruled. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★☆☆
1975. I've no idea who this is, and frankly I've no intention of finding out more. My word this is dull! Over an hour of tediuos charity advert piano music, spread over just for tracks. It got 30mins from me, then a scan of the remaining tracks to find out that they all sounded the same. I can't ever imagine a situation when I would crave this kind of background, hotel reception vibe. Anyway, I'm not a fan... Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️50% Revisit ❌️ not a chance ★☆☆☆☆
1973. This is really quite a decent offering and very much a surprise to my ears. I was always under the impression that TSAHB were proper dad rock, and to be fair there's an element of glam rock, which is to be expected for the time, however there's a smattering of very good tracks, 'The Faith Healer' is excellent. There's also some utter rubbish 'Giddy Up A Ding Dong', as the name suggests, is horrific. Less novelty would make this a better album. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ unlikely Good in places ★★★☆☆
1985. Other than the obvious hits, I'd not heard this before. It's actually quite a good listen, if a bit of commercially over-produced, but such is it's appeal from a time that big power-pop songs were ubiquitous in our every day lives. I'm unlike to go back to this, but it was a enjoyable 40 minute, 80s throwback. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Retro 80s ★★★☆☆(6/10)
Just not doing this...
1994. I'm starting to question the selection process of the curator. Seriously, is Elvis Costello really deserving of six entries in this process, yet nothing from say Cardiacs, who are arguably far more influential? Anyway, this was bang average at best, and perhaps a little dull and lacked interest. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Average ★★☆☆☆(4/10)
1973. Some cracking early punk to be found here. You can hear the sound of all the artists that have been influenced by NYD and I'm sure a fair few pub bands too. I was surprised by how many tracks I recognised... I may go back 🤔 Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit 🫳 Strong punky ★★★☆☆(6/10)
1963. Yeah, not for me. It's like an event in history has been recorded for prosperity. I've heard it now, I don't need to again. Couple of tracks were OK. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ nope ★★☆☆☆(3/10)

1984. I was looking forward to this, and a strong start left me feeling that I'd foolishly overlooked TSC in the past. I like Weller's dip into jazz/jazz funk, which sits well in my ear. However, the second half of the album was a mishmash of differing styles that didn't really belong with each other on the same record, so I probably won't return. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Good in places ★★★☆☆(6/10)
1958. If the Beatles is Mum rock, this is definitely Nan Rock. If big band, trad jazz is your thing then this is gonna work for you. I like jazz, and I must confess I like some of this too. However, it's definitely going to benefit being in the mood, and the right environs. A seedy, soho dance club in the late 50s and yes, we could be friends. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit 🫳 I get it ★★★☆☆(6/10)

1992. I just can't see why this album is part of the 1001 process. Mr. Wendal can do one, and take his nondescript 90s MTV fodder with him. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Lacks identity ★★☆☆☆(4/10)
1966 The only Bob Dylan album in my collection, and that in itself seems odd because I've never liked it. With a run time of 1 hour and 11 minutes, it's roughly 1 hour and 11 minutes too long. Heard before ✅️ yeah, I try Listened this time ✅️ Revisit 🫳 only because it's on my shelf No interest ★★☆☆☆
1971 "Wos gorn arn" as they say in my neck of the woods. "Ass gorn off!" It's obviously a classic, and in places decent enough, but too many references to children, Jesus etc for my tastes. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ actually, yes Revisit ❌️ Not my bag ★★☆☆☆

2000 I know there's a lot of love for this, and it does exist on my shelves, but it isn't often played because it's a genre I don't often gravitate to. Can't play this in front of my daughter either. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Decent ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
1994 I'm a massive Smith's fan, despite Morissey becoming a twat in recent times, but I struggled a bit with his solo work. I basically miss the Marr influences. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Just OK ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
1978/98 1970's Brazilian latino jazz/funk/soul is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I enjoyed this for the most part. There's a couple of weak tracks that let the collection down a bit Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ I shouldnt, but I do.★★★☆☆ (6/10)
1974 I know 'Dreamer' and seemingly this feels like a standout track on an album I've never heard before. I don't know too much about Supertramp, but this feels like it should and could be a lot more experimental and progression, but instead we get a relatively safe album, full of easy accessible tracks. A shame. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ no need to really Safe and average ★★★☆☆ (5/10)
1971 Despite being a Stones fan, I've somehow missed hearing this album in full before now. There's some familiarity with a few tracks, that remain classics, and there's also hints of what they were to become, which is less to my liking. The 'authentic' Americana blues and country elements leave me unenthused to make a return. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Average ★★★☆☆ (5/10)
1969 Ramble on, it certainly does... Always thought of LZ as a Greatest Hits band, this doesn't change my opinion. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Cock rock ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
1976 Largely passed me by. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Nondescript ★★☆☆☆ (4/10)
1966 I'm aware of the respect this album gets, although I've never heard it in full before. It does sound dated, but not in a bad way and the tracks I'm familiar with came as a surprise to find them here, particular 'Seven and Seven Is', which is decent and sounds very influential for what was to come from stable mates The Doors. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit 🫳 Now I understand ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
1972 I really want to like this...but at 67 minutes my interest soon wanes. It all seems so contrived; they're from London for heaven's sake I'll try again one day. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ reluctantly Bloated ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
1990 Many claim to be fans of Cocteau Twins, but really they're just trying to be cool in front of their peers; also they're wrong. If dreamy, indy pop, where you can't make out the lyrics is your thing, go for it, I found it all a bit dull. I have a CT album in my collection (not this one), but it seldom find its way onto my CD player. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ nope Bloated ★★★☆☆ (5/10)
1978 It's a massive "No" from me... Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ in part Revisit ❌️ nope No ★☆☆☆☆ (2/10)
2006 Interesting for the first 20 minutes or so, then kind of samey. It's basically Blues, but he's probably singing about a stubborn camel or where the next watering hole is. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ nope Monotonous ★★★☆☆ (5/10)
2000 "I've got this idea" "Go on then, what're you saying?" 1988 This didn't get off to a good start as it wasn't available on either Amazon or Spotify. I did manage to find it eventually, lurking on YouTube. Anyway, as long as it isn't nondescript, indie... .. .. It is! Plus a whiny steel guitar sound 😞 for that 'authentic' Americana vibe that I love so much. What is this doing here and how did they manage to get a record contract? Seriously, this must be one of the most forgettable albums of all time. At last... Not just something I like, but my all time favourite and most played album. I have this on multiple formats and various mixes. Amazing jazz fusion, which as an 18 year old, opened up my music listening world to alternatives to the mainstream. I still adore this album, and play it regularly, 38 years after first hearing it. 1968 The only Hendrix studio album in my collection, mainly because of 'Crosstown Traffic', a favourite which appears early on. At 75 minutes though, it may be a bit on the long side, but that's a harsh criticism which is offset by some amazing tracks along the way, and what a finish, with 'All Along The Watchtower' and 'Voodoo Chile' (Slight Return). I confess, I'd forgotten how good this really is. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★★☆ (8/10)
1972 Is this an important genre defining album? Are there some banging tracks? Are there some questionable lyrics? Does it sounds dated? Does Zappa get a name check? 1979 There's a time and a place for 70's disco, which is usually wedding receptions and village hall discos, both of which are likely to be full of drunk boomers. Right now I'm neither at a wedding reception or in a village hall, so this won't be getting aired tonight. However, that said, I've heard it before, so I'm confident in suggesting that I'd rather hear this than Adele. 2009 Absolutely bang on for bland naughties, 'experimental' indie fodder that was synonymous for the period. I had no idea what this was, and having listened, I'm baffled as to why it's even on the list. This is the kind of album that's made for a glowing Pitchfork review. 1997 One I own. Played this a lot back in the day, particularly in the car. It also benefits from not hearing in a while, because it's decent, though very much of the age. I'm back now though 🤘 Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ probably, but not for a while Strong★★★★☆ (7/10)
1969 I'm constantly told that it's 'cool' to like Johny Cash. I guess I'm not one of the cool kids. I just don't like this, and it's not helped by the bootleg feel to the production. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Some, had to end it early. Revisit ❌️ Not for me No thank you★★☆☆☆ (3/10)
1974 I'd never heard a Brian Eno album, in fact I'm not sure I've ever experienced any of his music ever before. So I had no preconceptions about what this was about. To be frank, I still don't know what I've just heard, and it probably demands further listening, which isn't going to happen. 2018 Nope, never heard of this. Started brightly with shades of Daft Punk/New Order/Working Mens Club, but soon disappeared up its own backside and simply became a nonentity as the minutes dragged by. 1973 Simply outstanding and befitting of its status. One of the few albums that made the cross-over from my dad to me. 1971 I've heard a smattering of these tracks before. The singles stand out, but the album is a good solid '70s rocker. I probably won't go back as there's too much music in the world and not enough minutes left. Silly album title. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ Solid ★★★☆☆ (6/10)
1971 So, I've got this, and for a while I used to wax lyrical about how Yes should be reverred in a godlike status. The musicianship and technical ability being demonstrated is pure prog. However, whilst I love the opener, 'Roundabout' and the production of the album as a whole. I find, as I've got older, it's all a tad arrogant and self-indulgent, and interludes between the main tracks are simply 'look-at-me' statements for each member of the band. Punk needed to happen. 1991 RHCP have made one good album and this isn't it. The misogynistic overtone of the lyrics, and Kiedis generally being an unlikable individual make this an unrewarding listen. 2001 It's really hard to put a lable on SFA, such is their diverse and experimental sound, this album being one of the most genre bending of their discography. Wiki says: "incorporating pop, prog, punk, jungle, electronica, techno and death metal" I've heard this album so many times; Wiki, there's no death metal! 'Receptacle For The Respectable' and 'No Sympathy' are absolute monsters and demonstrate SFA at their most 'don't give a fuck' attitude. 1986 I actually bought this in '86 (don't have it any longer). I know this is meant to be a classic and indeed deserves it's place on this list, but I've always thought of Cream as being suitably catered for by owning a Greatest Hits compilation (which I do). Had Bowie not just popped up out of the blue after a ten year hiatus, I'm not sure this record would have resonated that much. On the face of it, a step up from 'Heathen', but essentially a collection of dark, art rock tracks, which in places hail back to his late 70s output, without seemingly offering much in the way of a coherent experience for the listener. For years and years, I made do with a 'Best Of' compilation. This is one of those albums that helped me find the way. The bass is such filth, and a Hammond organ in a punk band, whatever next? Metalhead that I am, it seems inconceivable that I've not heard this before. There's clearly lots of influential material here, and I can see why Venom are held up as pioneers of the thrash genre. The production is a bit naff, which is a shame because there's some decent tracks struggling to get out and some very obvious trail blazing sounds. My 200th review... I have a couple of Bjork albums on my shelves, but not this. Has a very introspective and serious vibe when compared to her earlier more accessible work. I'm not a massive fan of pop music, and less so of R 'n' B, that said, I have a formula for assessing whether an album of this style has any merit and that is to imagine what would be left to listen to if the vocals are removed... In this case, there's very little substance to the music, in fact it's barely more than a backing bedtrack; a few pops and beats. Perhaps I was just in the right mood, but this recording is so evocative and atmospheric. It's easy to be there in the room, the smell of tobacco, the drink flowing, the sounds of the fret clicks and string chirps, and the hum of the audience gently murmuring in the background. I can hear the sound that may have influenced a young Zappa too. I'm not a massive fan of live albums, but this feels more like an historical document. I love it. It moves to 'the buy list'. I had no idea that Aerosmith were a thing in the mid-seventies, and I guess that's due to Run DMC, so this was a learning curve. Interesting, and a bit of a revelation. If you listened regularly to the radio during the naughties, it was hard to escape the sound of this band. There's no doubt that the songs on this album are perfect indie pop, they're cleverly written and resonate with real life experiences. That's why this album will always be a classic of its time. The first three Queen albums are pretty damn good, their 4th is the moment I find myself no longer a fan. There are undoubtedly some high moments, but there's also too much ragtime musical filler nonsense.
