Reviews (page 2 of 7)

Excellent hidden gem here. Sounds like it could have been from a movie soundtrack for a weird late 90s or early 2000s movie like Snatch. Very much a 1960s The Animals feel with plenty of well-done instrumentation you may not expect.

Wow what a great fun album. Apparently I came across this band on a compilation album 10 years ago but I have no recollection. So as a first time listener I'm keen to dig into it more. Great boppy mix of styles. Faves: Simon Diamond, Goodbye, Calendars and Clocks

This gets a big nostalgia bump from me - takes me back to the just-out-of-uni era. I'm seeing a lot of negative reviews for it which is a bit dispiriting - I dunno, I obviously can't tease the nostalgia out of my viewpoint, but it feels to me like I'd still really like this if I were hearing it for the first time now? 🤷 It's playful, inventive, genre-hops a bunch, is littered with nautical references - seriously, what's not to like? Fave tracks - "Dreaming of You" has long been a fave - fun to sing at karaoke too! I could list pretty much any of the other tracks, too - I have a lot of affection for this album!

Forward looking retro! Here's an album that builds on the past yet has its own distinct voice. Listened twice already. LOVE IT.

I barely listened to it but the vibes were good

Bloody loved it

great album, their top

Hell yeah

Aldrig hört förut men det här var en positiv överraskning. Plattan är ju jättebra.

This is pretty good! Giving it a 5 because it's a pleasant surprise.

Where do I start. OK. The Coral are from The Wirral, where I live. As kismet has it on the day I go t this album I actually went for a little walk along the Prom in their home town of Hoylake. It's a town by the sea. Not a seaside town. Most of The Wirral is like that. An urban area (nearly) surrounded by estuaries. It's probably me reading too much into it, but The Coral's music feels like home. Salt soaked, melancholic, a bit weird, borrowing lots of ideas from elsewhere, but very much it's own thing.

Sort of a reverse Elvis Costello here (since this list has loved giving me Elvis Costello albums lately). Whereas Elvis Costello was very much ahead of his time, this is a throwback to a lot of sounds from the 70s. It's very much in the psychedelic rock world, but it also pulls in some really lovely folksy sounds as well as some strong indy rock influences. This is an absolutely lovely album. I'm not sure why Dreaming of You is the only real "hit" from this album, but it deserves far more love.

always liked this band

Super cool album

A short sweet old favourite. It still holds up.

Brilliant debut

This blew me away. Instant favorite

10/10 everything I could ever want and more perfect rock revival album

4.5, super fun music, really needed it today

Loved it. Weird, quirky, jazz/ska/indie mix. Didnt realise I knew them until -the- song came on.

banging start to end

I bought this when it first came out and knew it would be a classic. How anyone can give this anything other than 5* is beyond me

Outstanding. Can't wait to listen to more of their catalog. Right up my alley.

Dreaming of you is een zalig hitje met nostalgische waarde. De rest van het album is ook erg opzwepend en tof

Wow this was a total new discovery for for me and I loved the album Simon Diamond and Skeleton Key are great but it a really retro sounds with a twist - its a ride for sure listen to the whole thing please

I’d never heard of The Coral before, but every song on this album rocks.

Grew on me after the first listen

Great actually was not expecting this.

Very good, but very short. Possibly the most Scouse thing ever to exist, which is a good thing! A band I loved when this came out, and will always think of fondly

Love it Beatles-esque. Very mod and jangly.

One of my favorite albums in high school.

Rating: 10/10 Best songs: all

No los conocía. Están entretenidos.

Dope Psychedelia. Would probably be a 9/10, but a lot of the early songs squarely place this in a 5.

Actually really enjoyed this album. I'd heard the song "Dreaming of You" before but had no idea it was this group.

For an album I knew nothing about it was pretty good! The whole reason I am doing this is to broaden my horizons.

Fucking weird. Complimentary. All sorts of different styles present here but none of it feels like a cheap imitation. We have shades of sea shanties, reggae, britpop, a good dose of 60s psychedelic folk rock homages, and then whatever the fuck Skeleton Key is. Really big fan of this. 4.5

Kinda feels like They Might Be Giants' version of The Mollusk (Ween) First discovery of the list for me :) I really enjoyed it

Definitely better than most of the random British rock groups on the list. Nice little bridge between older psychadelic groups and modern indie, there were a couple stinkers but the rest was good

This was a blast and very much my jam. Will definitely give it another listen. 4/5.

This was a lot of fun. Another album I'm upset I learned about so late. Younger me would have been obsessed with this. 4/5

Kinda loved this album! It was super interesting, unique, fun, and weird in a great way. Every song was completely different which I really enjoyed. Never heard of The Coral before but I will definitely be listening to more!

I own this album and still have a soft spot for the Coral’s psychedelic sea shanty indie but I’m also kind of surprised it made the list.

One of the better debut rock n roll albums you will hear.

Has a bit of that something, that weird thing that elevates it above a 3.

I don’t like 21st century indie. I did not expect to like this. But dammit it took me in. Goodbye is so catchy. The solo in Bad Man just absolutely rips. This is an extremely fun album.

# Album Name: The Coral # Artist: The Coral # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Rolling back the years to the early 00's. Great album at the time. Doesnt deserve a place on the list though. # Top Tunes: Remember when / Dreaming of you / Good bye / Skeleton key # Would I listen to it again? Yes

Nie von gehört, sehr positiv überrascht!

I was not familiar with this, but I thought it was pretty good. Fun, melodic, colorful, soulful, a little trippy. Some bad reviews at the top, do these guys root for the wrong football team or something?

7.5/10 Best songs: Skeleton Key, Bad Man An indie band from the early 2000s that I've never heard of? What on earth is this wizardry? I have to admit, I was skeptical when I started the album, but I ended up really enjoying it. It sounds like absolutely nothing else that was coming out at this time - heavily influenced by 60s psychedelic rock with the usual 2000s indies/Britpop flair, the album is really quite fascinating. I'm not particularly surprised that it wasn't more well known at the time (or even now...), but in terms of "albums you should listen to," this one is certainly worth it if only to hear music that no one else was doing.

Shockingly holds up well after not listening to this for 20 years. Pretty cohesive experience start to finish

A good time. This one stirs up images of those who joined theatre troupes in college. Everything was a performance - over-the-top. They were also incredibly in lockstep, like the vocals here.

Not only had I never heard this, I never heard OF this. Interesting: 11 songs, 34 minutes--who does that? Ska-ish guitar rollicking along with psych noodling and bells to an abrupt end in Dreaming of You. Echoes of The Turtles and The Kinks harmonize nicely. While I miss the endlessness of a good Dead jam, have to say theses guys seem to know what works best, as in Skeleton Key.

I haven't been so perplexed by an album in a while. it's such a bizarre record, I honestly have no idea how to rate it except that i admire their chutzpah. I can't even really put my finger on why I found this so weird, except it seemed to come from another universe. It doesn't really fit into any genre that I can think of. It's got a sea-shanty kind of vibe, as well as The Zombies and other old-school groups. I had no idea what to expect from one minute to the next. Sometimes that was good, and others... maybe not so much? I did not finish listening to this, and I genuinely sighed as I was listening and felt like, OK, I've had enough, only to realize that this was a double album and I had only just finished disc one. And yet here I am giving it a 4 for some reason, only because a 3 seems like a cop-out. Sometimes this rating system is fun and makes sense; other times, I have to throw up my hands because rating something like this seems beside the point. Anyway, I'm glad I heard it. Not sure I'll return to it, but if I did, I'm sure I'd find it even more rewarding.

As fresh as the day I first heard it. Great set of songs with a bit of quirkiness to some of them. A good all rounder if you’re looking for something a bit different. Bonus point for pissing the murricaaans off showing them there’s more to music than that murricaaana bullshit

Well this is an odd pick for this list. It is a very good jangle pop record with an excellent vocalist it is better considered as an exemplar of many other similar bands from the same period. The Cribs, The Futureheads, The Rifles and Maximo Park all come to mind. James Skelly’s vocals carry the record. The diversity of the record is compelling and the obvious gems are found in the 60’s psychedelic stylings of Goodbye with its beautiful harmonies. However, the star of this record is Dreaming of You which is a catchy slice of pop goodness. What does stand out for me is just how high the musicianship is for a debut record. The record works and undoubtedly the reviews it received when it came out recognized the quality of songwriting which is top notch. Waiting For the Heartaches to Come is such a 60’s throwback and honestly if they were just busking, they would stop crowds particularly with the keyboards adding that Doors feeling to that track. The theft from the past likely reflects the band members interests in those records as they learned to play. The hidden track - Time Travel - buried in Calendars and Clocks with it’s Specials “Ghost Town” feel is a gem. Good album and enjoyable. 4/5

the debut of the coral, an ambitious britrock group who tried to shake up the rock game a little bit. the different sound caused a fair amount of critics to be turned off on release, and there's at least 12 different genre names you could technically classify this record as being. it's weird, it sometimes sounds like it's from the 50s-60s, it's fascinating, and, dare i say nautical levels of music. feels like it would be paired along great in a playlist with some stuff by ween. it's the kind of music that makes you feel dazed in a good way. perhaps the kind of music you could listen to if you're playing sea of thieves? it could work. give it a moment for it to play and you'll think it's pretty solid.

Me gustó bastante, lo disfruté mucho, no los conocía y puedo entender cómo el estilo que ellos crearon pudo influir en una de las bandas que ahora escucho y que me gustan

Wow, another pleasant surprise! I had never heard of this band or album before and ended up loving this one. Kind of a blend of Franz Ferdinand with the Clash and some trippy elements, like the weirder side of Queens of the Stone Age. Really enjoyed this one.

A remix of 60s greats. Psychedelia, Dylan stories, simple, hard rock. I look forward to my next visit. 4/5

Wasn't really looking forward to this one, but it was a very pleasant surprise. Such a fun one to listen to. Don't listen to the top reviews here they are all frauds

weird, ecclectic and daring sound, loving the dynamic and genre range of the band the album combines psychedelia, garage, and shifting structures to build a strange and dreamlike atmosphere, although its more floating and less confrontational approach may prove less immediate than other works of a similar spirit.

who up coraling their coral

So fun! Easy to listen to and an interesting sound. I might've ate this up if I heard it when it was released. 3.5 rounded up to a 4.

Can’t put my finger on the genre but it was a cool ride

A brilliant debut album. It’s confident, accomplished, well informed, vibrant, energetic, and distinctive yet diverse. Only a slightly less convincing side 2 is stopping me from giving this a 5. I think this is their only album in the 1001…if you’re reading this, don’t miss out on their other albums; lots more gold!

Great album by a vastly underappreciated group

One of the bands from my youth, so I know I'll enjoy it. Really good stuff all the way through this (short) album, really enjoying it as expected. 4/5.

I really enjoyed this one, more so than any I've heard here in the last couple of weeks. Great album!

Very interesting listen, a 00s album that sounds like something straight out of a 60s psychedelic rock record. Really liked this one.

недостаточно внимательно слушала, чтобы выдать что-то осмысленное, но как саундтрек к курсачу сработало вообще отлично

If you judged this group based on their singles, you would think it was a pretty standard alt rock band, but this album has quite a few quirks that make it stand out in an odd sort of way. I can't explain it but it feel like a combo of 50s diner rock and neo psychadelia, definitely a curve ball compared to its most well know song Dreaming of You. But this was an enjoyable album.

00’s Britpop ⭐️I Remeber When

this album has been such an enigma for me. i like it but i have no idea how to classify this band or these tracks. they're all pretty different, which i enjoy. it's not life-changing music for me but it's cool. favorites: tracks 2-6

A nice surprise. Never heard of them before.

In parts sixties psychedelia, in others very Beefheart. Lots of catchy pop songs, solid throughout.

fun on a bun

You know it's gonna be good with a sweet album cover collage like this.

Super unique album. I did not expect to like it but ended up enjoying majority of the album. Definitely a nice switch up for me

Really interesting album with a ton of variety, part of it is like the strokes or other alternative rock artists while part of it feels like it borrows from older 1960s rock. I liked this one, it's a good and creative album

Can we get "The Mollusk" by Ween, we already have "The Coral by "The Coral" Nah this is actually really good in my opinion

Fun and diverse album, felt like ween

Interesting

good tunes

Не ожидал почему-то эту группу встретить здесь. Запись энергичная.

iskreno, dosta dobro. jedino što mi je znalo pa i podosta smetati jest pomalo seljački način pjevanja na nekim dijelovima, nepotrebna amerikanizacija. no sve u svemu ostavilo dosta dobar dojam, pa ću im progledati kroz prste i dati četvorke umjesto možda nešto objektivnije trojke. nastojat ću zacijelo preslušati još koji put

I dug it hard. That psychedelic 60s vibey type, I really liked this one. The first 6 songs are straight fire. Maybe I got bored towards the end but idc, I’m listening to this again.

Recien descubro este grupo, es muy buen disco, tiene varios matices de genero y de influencias de bandas, un dusco muy variado que te mantiene moviendo la cabeza siempre, muy buena banda y buen disco!

No los controlaba y me han gustado mucho

If I were younger or this had been released earlier, I'd have been all over it. As it is, I feel like I missed out somewhat.

This was fun. Will be back in the future.

Lovely jangles of 00s indie.

honestly that was a rly good album. enjoyed it a lot more than i thought i would.

War ganz okay, konnte man gut nebenbei laufen lassen

This list has conditioned me to think that any British album I’ve never heard of from the 80s-00s is gonna be ass bad. Pleasantly surprised to find this one is FUN actually, the type of oddball high energy indie rock that I really enjoy. Skeleton Key blows though.

Dude idk, I had a fun time some solid tracks, didn’t skip any songs and overall I had a fun time

beetje wisselvallig... elke keer dat het wat inzakte, was het daarna terug boenk op... ik hoorde zelfs wat Captain Beefheart bij momenten...

quirky but fun!!! really liked i remember when, shadows fall, and dreaming of you

muy piola, country, melódico

Good indie

Nice. Easy four stars, though the first half was better than the latter half. Nevertheless this was fun. Would revisit.

Very solid band and a good representation of what they create

I’ve always quite liked the singles by The Coral and I remember when *Dreaming of You* hit the charts and really caught my attention. Looking back through my Apple library I had this and their follow up added but I haven’t listened in many years. This really felt like a 3 star album and even its global score is bang on 3, but today I really enjoyed this and tried not to let my preconceptions influence my ranking, because had I never heard of them before, I would probably give this 4 stars, and feeling more generous today, that’s exactly what I did - it’s very engaging psychedelic indie, maybe it doesn’t quite finish as strongly but it’s a good listen.

Decent! I enjoyed it but there weren’t really any standouts to get it to that 5 star level

I’m rather partial to this type of 2000s does psychedelic music. I like the spooky gypsy-punk stuff. This feels in the same realm as The Growlers or Gogol Bordelo. So I enjoy it.

I enjoyed this very much.

Portland Oregon or Brooklyn NY vibe where I just got a $3 beer that I thought I wouldn’t like but it’s actually not as bad as I thought it’d be

Pleasantly surprised by this project, some really strong rock songs that got me interested and kept me pretty satisfied.

It's not as spectacular as the last album I reviewed; very few could beat "SAW 85-92". "Self-Titled" is a fun album with some great lyrics. I really enjoyed "Dreaming of You", the big single on "Self-Titled". I'm surprised The Coral hid "Time Travel" at the end of "Self-Titled"; it's too good to be a hidden track. Let's see if my great album streak continues. 4 stars for "Self-Titled".

This band knows how to write a hook. Never heard of em but this was a lot of fun.

One song with 100m streams and most of the others under 100k. Still an enjoyable listen and I was pleasantly surprised.

Oh I really really liked this album, especially the second half

I’d never listened to anything by this band before and really didn’t know what to expect, so was very pleasantly surprised by the mixture of sea shanties and psychedelia. Really enjoyed the listen. I’ve regularly seen the album on cd in charity shops and bargain bins may very well pick up a copy of if I see one in future

Great album I really enjoyed the songs, the one thing that bothers me is I recognize the way he says “when I’m dreaming of you” and I can’t figure out where it’s from

Stabilt

Abwechlungsreich, nochmal hören

A very good album. Derided by some, but an excellent mix of classic indie pop and nostalgic influences.

4 out of 5 This is going in my regular rotation. Great jams.

Good throwback to 60's psychedelic. Solid 4 Stars.

I’m at a recommended 4. For the most part, Mercury Prizes nominees have worked really well for me on the list, and this is yet another one to fit the bill. With the Wikipedia description of a “neo-psychedelia and folk rock album”, I expected this to be something a little more stuck up & serious. I’m very glad they proved me wrong by the polka-esque shift on “Shadows Fall” – this is neo-psychedelia & folk to a degree, but I would say this is far more of a blended mixture of a bunch of different genres, somehow working cohesively together. There’s elements of ska, polka, rock, doo-wop & Americana, bringing to mind everyone from Nick Cave to Bruce Springsteen to Billy Joel to Elvis Costello to the Pogues. It’s an eclectic album, & one that feels sort of Zappa-esque in nature, though without the bigger eccentricities of his earliest works. For as eclectic & genre-bending as it is though, there are some tracks that feel like they hit a wall of ideas on & just sort of padded them out with instrumentals / ending choruses, and those moments are pretty noticeable. This album is only 34 minutes (roughly 40 if you count “Time Travel”, oddly not on streaming), but it feels a little bit longer due to that padding, which does sort of mess with the pace of the album. Most of these tracks are at a faster tempo, so while they bring up an energy really quickly, that energy can feel stagnant once those walls are hit, and it does hit them decently often. Granted, I don’t think it’s a big deal – the energy of the tracks is strong enough to begin with, & there’s only a handful of tracks that really FEEL like they overstay their welcome (“Waiting for the Heartaches” probably chief among them). Past that, there’s just a few tracks that didn’t hook me in all the way, even though they’re really fun to listen to (“Skeleton Key” & “Wildfire”, in this case). Those are the reasons I’m at a 4 here, but it’s a 4 that I do recommend. I think people giving this a 1 or a 2 are just turned off by the soundscapes here, and I can understand that to a degree. Those who are dismissing this just because it’s some plucky band from London that they’ve never heard of feels like a dismissal of the entire purpose of going through these albums. I’ll admit, I’m a little hesitant to say this is an album you MUST listen to before you die (certainly a lot ahead of it), but that’s not a reason to slap this with a 1. Putting it on its own merits, it’s a really enjoyable set of tracks that blend a lot of genres together with some “innovative” (what’s old is new again) production for the era. I think it’s a fun one, hence a pretty strong 4. I’m glad it’s on the list.

leuk! wel lichtelijk overprikkelend in het vliegtuig

My prediction is that this album will be less than a 3 globally (2.8?) However, I think it's quite unique, and I do like the raspy/breaking voice from the lead singer, giving the tracks some raw originality to it. 3.5

A lot of people seem really negative about this album. It’s good musicians, a great singer, and a unique style. There’s a lot of good stuff here, even if a few songs drag on a little long. I really like the Zappa/Beefheart influence you can hear on Skeleton Key, it was a very welcome surprise. 4/5

Cool album. Lots of interesting sounds. Definitely fun.

pretty cool, listened to it while recreating a matisse

Eclectic and odd but fun. I liked it; would play it again.

It’s fun. Very fun.

Some fun, raucous rock and roll. I quite enjoyed it.

After hearing some debuts that sound like debuts its always a pleasure to hear one that sounds as polished as this. This is an incredibly solid and incredibly fun record. There were a few songs that didn't hit for me (like the throwaway intro track) but they didn't take away from my overall enjoyment of the record.

I have never heard of this band before, but love the band name. Creative guitar effects and a really diverse rhythmic repertoire. That was a fun album with a lot of variety and groove!

Very good

I don't know what I just listened to, but it was chaotic, worldly, and fun

I have fond memories of Dreaming of You because of Scrubs. I’m not sure if that is an original score in the show or something they added after the music licenses ended.

Liker det godt, hvorfor er ikke disse større?

Intro had me nervous, there was something eerie about the first song that kept me curious. Now I can’t stop listening. This is such a good album. I’m enjoying rocking out to it, it just gets better and better

Very strange quirky album with a variety of musical styles and mixes. For example, "Shadows Fall" wouldn't be out of place in a Spaghetti Western but it has Reggae influences, while "Simon Diamond" is a Sea Shanty crossed with Psychedelic Rock. The track "Goodbye" has a late 1960s feel to it and was definitely influenced in part by early Pink Floyd. I liked the album.

The opening track alone is a lot of fun, and there's a lot of varied influences and entertaining genre mash-ups throughout the rest of the album. I was all for the sea shanty fad a few years back, and I'm for this as well. Favorite track: "Spanish Main"

I thought this album was pretty consistently good; I was surprised that its one hit stood out so much. It has a nice thematic feel, some pirate vibes at times, and the songs don't overstay their welcome.

Indie classic

I wasn’t familiar with this but quite enjoyed it.

I had never heard of this band. Had I, most likely I would have lumped them in with all the other "The" bands from the early 2000's. I enjoyed this album a lot and it had more of a ska and reggae feeling than I had expected. This music isn't going to change the world and I am not even sure if I would consider this an "essential" record. It's a rarity for me to enjoy one of the albums on this list, yet I also am not sure if the album is worthy of inclusion. It's essentially the reverse of what I usually find. My favorite songs were: I Remember When Dreaming of You Goodbye Waiting for the Heartaches Wildfire Calendars and Clocks

Very eclectic almost classic rock/ modern pscychedelic

Good mix

Pleasantly surprised

Surprisingly really good. Fun energy, good hooks and guitar lines

I loved so many of the songs on this one, I am really impressed by some of the lesser known tracks. I don't feel like it was on the level of the other 5 stars but it was close in my opinion. Might come back to this one again. 4.4

Very 1960s and very Liverpool. Bearing in mind I don’t care too much for either then this is pretty listenable. Obvious influences mentioned by other reviewers so I won’t bother. Nothing on it I didn’t like.

Hook filled, kind of spooky British rock which owes a debt to the doors

Day665 - perhaps i will listen to more of the coral. they were a pleasant surprise from the early two thousands

nothing groundbreaking but an interesting listen. to me they sound like an indie version of the doors.

I enjoyed this one! Not particularly significant but good music in my opinion. 3.5 rounded to 4.

This is a debut album from the British rock band The Coral. The album was released in 2002, but most of it (except for “Skeleton Key” which was more of a 2000s sound) seems like it could have been from the 1960s-70s. Overall the album exceeded my expectations so it gets four stars.

Some unexpectedly good tracks very strong overall

Oh, yeah, I remember Dreaming of You. Nice song. Quite fun album. I like the inclusion of the melodica.

3.75-I enjoyed the first half better than the second.

Y'a pas une musique que j'avais pas écouté pour moi c'est classique honnêtement

NO way tro bi1

What is this style? Gypsy rock? I like the harmonies and instrumentation, the time changes and the vibe on the whole. It’s has a bit too many mundane rock elements for me still. Not bad though!

Never heard of these guys, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. I pictured They Might Be Giants singing British Invasion psychedelic rock with a punk band. There's a lot of playfulness here, but there's enough musicianship to be entertaining.

Great Scouse sound, enjoyed this a lot.

Wildly derivative of various (great) sounds of yesteryear, but full of joy and musical talent. A very solid three stars

Didn't have time to review this when I listened to it the first time, but I remember being very pleasantly surprised. So listened again not so surprising this time but equally if not increasingly enjoyable. What was surprising though was that the track which was vaguely familiar, that I took to be the single, was one of the least enjoyable ones. I remember thinking after the first listen that I'd give it a healthy 3. But having gone through it a second time I find myself revising that. So 4 it is, yes I really liked it.

So far it seems quite nice. Feels polka-like in a way. I'm not quite sure what genre it is, maybe 2000s indie rock? Right now I'm thinking a 4. It's a strong start for sure

Never heard this before but enjoyed it a lot. Will listen to this one again. Not sure if this is the "return of rock" the critics thought it was, but it was good.

I was surprised by this album honestly.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album before listening, however "Dreaming of You" seemed familiar to me. This is a pretty cool album. It is kind of indie/alt rock but touches on a lot of genres in the process. A lot of it was pretty catchy. I liked this and would definitely listen to this again.

I've never heard of these guys, but they are great! Definitely will check out more of them.

I like the Coral. Dreaming of You is one of my favourite songs. I wouldn't say the rest of the album was quite on the same level but it had something about it. More ska influence than I was expecting.

that was such a fun album!

He has a better voice than I remember

This is pretty good! I especially like the vocals (lots of good harmonies) and the guitar work. Instrumentation is good. Xylophone, horns, & bongos make guest appearances but the common thread is the cool surf-rock style guitar through it all. Some songs remind me 60's psychelica (the incense and peppermint kind). Others like I Remember When and Bad Man have a kind of funky vibe. I especially like how they are able to work a song by slowing it down and then kicking it back up.

Super fun discovery! Loved how catchy and rockin' this all was, and really creative instrumentation and song structures too.

I see a lot of hate in the comments. I don't understand it. Indy rock with a sixties movie soundtrack vibe. Great attention to detail. There's a lot going on in the background. The Arctic Monkeys must have heard this and failed miserably at sounding like it (and somehow still got way more popular). Favorite song: skeleton key

Really enjoyed this one, listened a couple of times in a row.

Damn, can’t believe I missed these guys during my youth. They’re awesome. Really fun listen and they have a new fan here.

This was a fun sound

Quite liked it!

Fortsatt gøyal. Det enkle er ofte det beste.

Peculiar Scouse psychedelic pirate musichall klezmer soul. Excellent

I liked that. 4 stars. Need to investigate further.

This was never at any point boring or uninteresting. For that alone I'm giving it a 4. it helps though that a bunch of these songs kick ass and Dreaming Of You is a classic.

8'5/10

Had t heard of them but was very suprised. Some great tunes on this

Highlight Song/s: I Remember When, Shadows Fall and Dreaming of You What a surreal sound this album has, this might be love at first sight (or listen.) It has such a nice combination of the piratey/sea shanty feel and that garage rock revival sound to it. The novelty did start to run out with that last handful of songs. And if I had to pick a track to delete, It would be 'Skeleton Key'.

all I remembered was Spanish man... but i think this was a good album

Had never heard of this, and I’m only like three songs in but I’m really enjoying it so far. This got progressively weirder but in a fun way. Would listen again.

That second song is insaaaane. Love the energy on here and how absolutely teeming with psychedelia all these indie rock bangers are. Dreaming of You 🤍 7+

A surprise. When it came out I read it was retro and psychedelic and I was turned off. Was I stupid (again), it’s beautiful! Fav: Skeleton Key

- gonna give it a 4 because it's not perfect .... it's adventurous and that's worth a lot these days. Solid playing, decent writing but at times obvious .... pretty good stuff. Another unheard band for me to explore. -

Hadn’t heard of this band before listening to this. I like the way they blend all the elements of bluesfolkpsych rock - “Simon Diamond” sounded like what the Partidge Family might have sounded like if Peter Wolf stood in for David Cassidy… but I digress. Solid and fun and creative throughout - I’ll be checking out more

Wow, I had never really listened to these guys but I loved this album! I had to listen to it twice since I didn't care for it the first time, thinking that they are like a tamer Ween or a less intersting Dukes of Stratosphere. But, on second listen, I appreciated it much more. I love the eclecticism often within one song. He's got a great voice as well. Music discovery is one of the great things about this whole generator thing and I plan on listening to more of these guys.

YABA (Yet Another British Album) Ska-ish, kinda fun, but nothing outstanding enough to be on here. Liked it more than expected. 4* Highlights: dreaming of you

a scrubs song - when Elliot and JD hook up

Ah, yes I remember this coming out when I was in university. They were the critics darling and 'Dreaming of You' was a record constantly played in Barfly. Beyond that sentimental nostalgia, this is an incredibly diverse record, which for the most part, is deserving of the hype. They went for the kitchen sink approach, with literally all their influences chucked into the mix. So it's got a bit of everything from garage to psych to folk rock and exotica and you can a touch of Barrett era Floyd, Doors, Beatles, Madness and Gorkys. Listening now, it's still a good listen but I'm not totally convinced by the vocals. But there is much to enjoy on this charming, effervescent record.

A fun album that’s was just a bit different to everything else at the time it was released. Still stands up well today

A week ago I woke up with, "Up in my lovely room, ooh..." going round my head; Googled it; played it twice. Now the whole album is here. It's surprisingly enjoyable for pop music. I like that it has a good range of styles in it. Dreaming of You is the obvious stand out single, but there's nothing wrong with the rest, they were pleasant enough.

Enjoyed this very much, the obvious highlight being Dreaming of You.

Mad that I've never listened to this album, always rated the coral but never quite made the effort. It was more psychedelic than I was expecting, and I expected it to be a little odd. Definitely reminded me of the doors. Spanish main and skeleton key stood out I think but it could have done with one more obvious hit. Could definitely grow on me more.

How have I never head of this band? This is way too much in my lane to have somehow missed it. The punk/ska Skeleton Key was a top track on my list. Nevermind - looked at the wiki and this came out during peek baby. The dark years of new music. Thank you 1001 for filling in this gap.

Where has this album been all my life, that was so fun!

Somebody took a bunch of genres that I kinda like and made this interesting mashup genre that I really like.

Gave the vibes of the Scooby Doo movies soundtracks.

Never heard of these guys but this is a pretty cool album. This is kind of the stuff I feel like I missed ignoring rock for the 2000s, that makes me regret completely writing the genre off. Definitely a unique sound. I like the psychedelic sensibility they have without sounding too much like a 60s acid rock wannabee band. Time Travel is a great finishing track. 4/5

Man, I saw a “The” 2000s band and dreaded it. But wow. This band was actually pretty interesting. A smorgasbord of genres, a little ska, a little psychedelic — a lot of rock n roll.

Super psychedelic, I hear some influence from The Doors.

What would happen if The Byrds, 60s Pink Floyd, and The Zombies had a threesome?

Like ska mixed with indie rock and polka music. Favorite songs: I Remember When, Waiting for the Heartaches, Spanish Main, Skeleton Key, Dreaming of You, Simon Diamond Least favorite songs: Calendars and Clocks 4/5

Нормальный альбом, одну песню добавил себе

I knew one song from this, which I liked before. This was surprisingly really fun and interesting. In a time when bands were leaning into the garage rock of the 60s, they chose the weird psychedelic folk and pop rock route.

THIS was actually brilliant,

Loved this when I was at school

Buenazo. Cosa curiosa, el disco base me gustó, pero escuché una edición remasterizada que traía cerca de una hora más de música, y esa me gustó mucho más que el disco original. Cosas que pasan. Pero sí, escucharía más de Los Coral.

At the time, I dismissed these guys as Cast for the 21st century, but there is something interesting and fun and experimental going on here, even if it is just a little bit too indebted to classic psych-rock. They're Space for the 21st century.

Listening to this again, having never really "gotten them" before, I now hear that they were really doing a throw-back to The Zombies and The Animals and other 60's British rock. "Dreaming of You" is one of the biggest examples, but there are many of the other more Psychedelic tracks that harken back to The Zombies, too. It's not exactly what I want out of that kind of sound, but the more I listen to it, the more I appreciate it. I think this deserves a 4 for just being able to write a song like "Dreaming of You" when they did and produce a full album that does have a modern take of that 60's rock.

Что-то интересное есть в этой музыке. Не уверен, что это попадёт в мой плейлист, но переслушать ещё раз альбом стоит.

Enjoyable. One of the better ones so far

I have never heard of this band nor have I heard of any of the bands on the Spotify 'Fans Also Like' section. Alt-rock? But like I'm getting a little Irish punk too? I like their sound. I didn't like Skeleton Key, too heavy for me. I loved Simon Diamond though, very fun.

It doesn't conform to prevailing indie rock standards of the time, eschewing that for mysterious, carnival sounds meeting 60s Merseybeat, ska meeting pop, sea-shanty rock meeting psychedelia. 'The Coral' is completely ramshackle, completely energetic, with no rulebook. It mashes British 60s with American psychedelia. Add to that the 'La's-worthy ear for melody, and you've got yourself a great album.

Always had this down as a bit of a novelty record but I enjoyed it this time round

I should probably like this a lot less than I should. It's doing a lot of things that normally push my buttons, but I can't help but really like it.

Good listening. Upbeat and fun in a bunch of places. Dreaming of You and Waiting for the Heartaches are highlights. 7.5

Really enjoyed it

Really enjoyed this, shame I was too snotty to like them in the early naughties

Really liked this one. It's like The Doors meets Simon and Garfunkel. Plus, since they're British, they have those baked-in Beatles harmonies.

Another album of my youth - I went to see the Coral live too, and Dreaming of you was on my covers band's setlist for years so I'm just so familiar with this one... Like psychedelic indie rock heavily inspired by previous Liverpool groups ....

Well, that was actually a very fun discovery to start the week!

British 2000s rock. Neo-psychedelia and folk rock. Has certain darkness. Understand Doors comparision. Feels quite 70s folk at points, done very well. Loads of bouncy, fun tracks. A bit retro Arctic Monkeys.

There is egg on my face. I assumed this would be radio-rock rubbish. I know and enjoy the single Dreaming Of You and assumed that this would be a classic one-hit album. I'm glad I gave it a chance, The Coral is so much more interesting and adventurous than the hit would lead you to believe! The Doors' influence bleeds through basically every moment of this album, but they're in no way just trying to be a sequel to that band. I enjoyed this a lot

## In-Depth Review of *The Coral* by The Coral The self-titled debut album *The Coral*, released in 2002, is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and ambitious debuts of the early 2000s. Blending a variety of musical styles, the album is an eclectic mix of psychedelic rock, indie pop, folk, and even hints of ska and sea shanties. Below is an analysis of its lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, followed by a balanced discussion of its strengths and weaknesses. --- ### **Lyrics** The lyrics on *The Coral* are a kaleidoscope of surreal imagery, storytelling, and emotional depth. Tracks like "Simon Diamond" delve into whimsical narratives with a psychedelic edge, while songs such as "Dreaming of You" offer more conventional yet heartfelt romantic themes. The band’s lyrical style often feels like a blend of Lewis Carroll-esque absurdity and poetic introspection. - **Strengths**: The lyrics are imaginative and versatile, ranging from playful to poignant. They evoke vivid imagery and complement the album's eclectic sound. - **Weaknesses**: At times, the abstract nature of the lyrics can feel disjointed or overly cryptic, which may alienate some listeners. --- ### **Music** Musically, *The Coral* is a melting pot of influences. The band draws heavily from 1960s psychedelia (e.g., The Byrds and Love), folk-rock, and post-punk. Tracks like "Skeleton Key" showcase their experimental side with off-kilter rhythms and quirky instrumentation, while "Dreaming of You" leans into catchy indie pop hooks. The use of jangly guitars, organ lines, and layered harmonies creates a rich sonic texture. - **Strengths**: - The diversity of styles keeps the album engaging from start to finish. - Standout tracks like "Spanish Main" and "Goodbye" highlight the band’s ability to craft memorable melodies. - The interplay between Bill Ryder-Jones’ lead guitar and Nick Power’s organ adds depth to the arrangements[3][5]. - **Weaknesses**: - Some tracks feel underdeveloped or overly reliant on their influences rather than forging a unique identity[5]. - The abrupt transitions between styles can occasionally disrupt the album's flow. --- ### **Production** The production on *The Coral* is both polished and raw. Recorded live in many instances, it captures the energy and spontaneity of the band’s performance. Producer Ian Broudie (of Lightning Seeds fame) strikes a balance between clarity and grit, allowing each instrument to shine without losing the organic feel. - **Strengths**: - The live recording approach gives the album an authentic vibrancy. - Effects like reverb and echo are used tastefully to enhance the psychedelic atmosphere[3]. - **Weaknesses**: - Some listeners might find the separation between instruments too pronounced, which can make certain tracks feel less cohesive[3]. --- ### **Themes** Thematically, *The Coral* explores escapism, nostalgia, love, and existential musings. The maritime imagery in "Spanish Main" evokes a sense of adventure and wanderlust, while "Calendars and Clocks" reflects on time and mortality with melancholic beauty. - **Strengths**: - The recurring themes of exploration and introspection tie the album together conceptually. - The whimsical tone adds charm without undermining the more serious moments. - **Weaknesses**: - Some themes are not fully fleshed out across the album’s runtime, leaving certain tracks feeling thematically isolated. --- ### **Influence** *The Coral* was both critically acclaimed upon release and commercially successful in the UK. It earned a Mercury Prize nomination in 2002 and helped pave the way for other British indie bands blending retro influences with modern sensibilities. Their sound has been compared to contemporaries like Super Furry Animals and older acts such as The Kinks. - **Legacy**: - Tracks like "Dreaming of You" remain iconic in indie rock playlists. - The album's fusion of styles influenced later bands seeking to incorporate vintage sounds into contemporary music. - **Limitations**: While influential within niche circles, *The Coral* did not achieve widespread global recognition compared to some of its peers. --- ### **Pros** 1. **Eclectic Soundscape**: The album effortlessly blends genres like psychedelic rock, folk, ska, and indie pop. 2. **Memorable Tracks**: Songs like "Dreaming of You," "Skeleton Key," and "Goodbye" stand out as highlights with enduring appeal. 3. **Inventive Lyrics**: Surreal storytelling adds depth and intrigue to many tracks. 4. **Energetic Performance**: The raw energy captured in live recordings enhances its authenticity. 5. **Cohesive Atmosphere**: Despite its eclecticism, there’s a unifying sense of whimsy throughout. --- ### **Cons** 1. **Inconsistent Flow**: Abrupt shifts in style can make the album feel uneven at times. 2. **Overly Derivative Moments**: Some tracks lean too heavily on their influences without adding enough originality. 3. **Cryptic Lyrics**: While imaginative, some lyrics may be too abstract for casual listeners. 4. **Limited Global Impact**: Despite its critical acclaim in the UK, it didn’t resonate as strongly internationally. --- ### Final Thoughts *The Coral* is an ambitious debut that showcases the band’s creativity and versatility. While it has moments of inconsistency, its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. For fans of eclectic music that blends retro influences with modern flair, this album remains a must-listen classic in early 2000s indie rock.

This album is ALL over the place, and has a few songs with rather abrupt endings. I enjoyed the majority of it though

Awesome psych record I never knew about, going to lookin into the rest of the discography.

First? 3,5 /5 Again? 3,5/5

This was fun!

3.7 Idk what genre this is but its funky. I like Goodbye. Its all over the place lol but not bad! Bad Man is FUNKAY.

Punk indie rock

really enjoyed this, some great rock tracks, fun quick listen

Stylish

What a surprise. I had not heard of The Coral until the list, but it is a delightful surprise. The album moves between fresh and new to older and familiar. Some tracks sound like they could have been produced in the late 60s and other feel right out of the 90s, and yet they keep it together throughout.

Despite the different genres featured throughout the album (rock, ska, folk, etc.), the psychedelic vibes were omnipresent the whole time. I've never heard of these guys, but I'm definitely into their sound. There were very few down points (Skeleton Key, Bad Man), however, for the most part this was a really fun listen. Songs I really liked off one listen: I Remember When, Shadows Fall, Dreaming Of You, Goodbye, Waiting For The Headaches. The first half was definitely stronger than the second half. I think from an enjoyability standpoint, this sneaks into the low 4 tier. I can see myself coming back to listen.

Kind of a fun album

Has a nice little foot-bouncing kind of feel to it.

A musician friend of mine introduced me to The Coral years ago, and while I was immediately attracted to their blend of psychedelia, garage and Merseybeat, and listened to more than one album, I did not listen especially closely. This, their debut, has a varied feel. Singer James Skelly isn’t one for nuance, often evoking the over-the-top bluster of Tom Jones, and the album has a kind of lysergic carnival feel — especially on the hit “Dreaming of You” and the woozy “Skeleton Key.” The songwriting is great. “Shadows Fall” comes off like a reggae sea shanty, “Goodbye” rides a potent riff and Merseybeat rhythm, and “Waiting for the Heartaches” unfolds gradually from its spooky vibes-and-organ intro to become a fierce garage rocker. It’s a reminder I need to spend more time with this band.

This was a fun one. I'd never heard of the album or the band so I went in blind. Every song was so interesting and dynamic and I was never bored listening to it. I could actually see myself playing this on my own if I'm cooking or just doing things around my apartment. Really happy with this one

Never heard of this band until now. It seems to me that they were trying different styles of music on this album. I appreciate their creativity. The album is now on my playlist. I’ll be sure to keep the songs from this album in my rotation for a while.

Spanish Main 3.6 I Remember When 4 Shadows Fall 4 Dreaming of You 3.7 Simon Diamond 3.5 Goodbye 3.9 Waiting for the Heartaches 4 Skeleton Key 3.8 Wildfire 3.8 Bad Man 4 Calendars and Clocks 3.7 Score: 3.818181818

very interesting sound, reminded me of the Zutons, may be higher rated with more listens. 4.5

At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of this album, but it grew on me fast. It’s like a 60s whimsical psychedelic sound blended with a modern indie twist. There’s also a playful and quirky vibe throughout the album that makes it even more enjoyable.

i really vibe with their psychedelic folky sound and i was already aware of them because of this album, and specifically the song dreaming of you because of the show Scrubs and a sax.co.uk video from a decade ago. I know they've released a few albums recently and this makes me want to give those a go since i really enjoyed this

Really liked the 2021 remastered album it was a double but I want to hear more of these guys

The Coral was a British pop rock band that evolved through several styles in the course of their career. At the time of their self-titled debut, they were a retro-psychedelic rock band - retro, for the aughts - with effect-laden guitars and organs. They employ rhythms that approach rockabilly, giving their songs a bouncing, upbeat sense. The album's success was driven by the single "Dreaming of You," the band's first hit, and the surprising range of sounds found on the album. The band wanders between an array of styles and sounds, making an interesting collection of songs.

Never heard of this band or album before but found this to be an enjoyable listen. Very unique for a rock band and combines a bunch of different genres into their sound.

A near perfect blend of psychedelic and modern rock, The Coral rush head on into instant classic status while remaining firmly in the promising stage. Such things as this can be seen as tired and worn out and it shouldn't work as well as it does given that, but work it does and The Coral have found a nice niche for themselves. Favorites: Spanish Main, I Remember When, Shadows Fall, Dreaming of You, Simon Diamond, Goodbye, Waiting for the Heartaches, Skeleton Key.

FAVO: I remember When, Dreaming of you, Goodbye

Énergique et bien rythmé, intemporel et solide.

Damn! Neo-psychedelia with dashes of dub. This was sick. Best song: Shadows Fall Also great: Dreaming of You Simon Diamond Goodbye Waiting for the Heartaches 4.25

Favorite Track: Dreaming of You

14/12/24 This was a good listen.

Great stuff. I don't really get the critics comparing this with psychedelia. Apart from the album cover, which resembles some 20th-century psychedelia classics, the record is more akin to a collection of rock-influenced sea shanties. You've got the drunken choral vocals, the shrill harmonica, the shoop-shoop chugging of the drums, the tonic-dominant basslines... It's not unpleasant by any means (in fact, it's surprisingly enjoyable), but does it really belong on the list of the 1001 most important albums in history? Even the hit track, Dreaming of You, maintains this strange nautical dance energy that eludes comprehension of how it came to be such a hit. It's a fun track, sure, but having 100x the number of Spotify streams as the next-most listened on the album is a little extreme. The vocals are an obvious strong point here. They're clearly inspired by the likes of Jim Morrison, Piper-era Floyd, the Stones, and perhaps a sprinkle of CCR. Definitely a throwback to 60s and early 70s music with its thick vocal harmonies, brash mixing, and simple rocking energy. The song Goodbye is particularly suspect here. We love some good retro singing. The high-energy shuffle of all the songs does get a little repetitive, and the album feels a little lengthy even for just 34 minutes – but judging by other entries on this list, it could be much, much worse. 4/5 Key tracks: Spanish Main, Dreaming of You, Goodbye

Interesting could use another listen

That was a really unique album with the mix of hard rock, folk, and a touch of reggae in some songs. Was a nice switch up from the norm on this list. Some of the guitar work was really cool and the singer has a pretty interesting voice which worked well. Dreaming of You I think was in Scrubs if my memory was unlocked correctly.

Never heard of these guys, but that was some pretty sweet psychedelic alternative folk-y shit. Noticed a lot of songs had some really solid harmonies too. Skeleton Key is wildly different than the others. This was just a strange album that was super interesting to me. Felt like it had a bunch of different genres and worked well. Creative af.

10 seconds in I realized this was a Very Serious Rock Album and had to return to it later when I had time to actually listen. Was great. will return to it, unlike almost every other album from this that I wasn't already familiar with

Floating between a 3 and a 4. Its rough around the edges, but its like an updated version of The Kinks or something which this list loves, so I'm moving it to a 4 with a "this is how it sits in context" mindset.

Great find for me.

Never heard of The Coral, but seems like they’re good enough that maybe I should have. A lot of severe tempo transitions in the middle of their songs and lead vocals make them sound very much like The Doors. Liked all songs except Skeleton Key. The Coral comes in at (4.2*s)

Great debut... Obviously has the mighty Dreaming Of You but the whole record bristles with a sense of daring and taking risks. Nothing sounded like it at the time and it only really sounds like The Coral.

Whoa. A UK rock album that I actively liked, that's rare on this list. This album was all over the place and it was fun. The lyrics and feel of the songs was often silly and lighthearted, I thought. I would listen to this album again, I hope I don't forget that it exists.

This is cool and hits the right spot with me. Spanish Main is a strong opener.

This won’t be for everyone but I like it

A bit surprising, his voice was actually quite good or pleasant to listen to and the other various instruments certainly spiced things up a bit with interesting lyrics as well

How did they hoover up so many influences whilst still so young?. This is a punchy debut. It bounces along with a Scally psych feel. The lyrics are clever, the songs are tight. Ian Broudie polishes up the rough edges without too much Mr Sheen. Songs for window cleaners to hum.

Despite me singing Dreaming Of You around the house on a regular basis, I somehow never knew that The Coral are from a town basically ten minutes down the road from me. I hadn’t heard anything else on the album before today, and it was a lot more varied than I’ve come to expect from UK indie bands. Interestingly, there were tracks that reminded me a little of Gogol Bordello, which was definitely a pleasant surprise. Outside of the super bigwigs of UK indie rock/pop (Blur and Oasis), this album might be up there are one of my favourites.

Great album that I'd not given much thought to before

This honestly took me a long time to figure out what kind of album this was. It was musically a little all over the place. I enjoyed it though even though it seemed scattered.

Varied and entertaining 3.9

"I remember when" aggiunta alla playlist : )

Not particularly original, but we'll done. Surprisingly I'd missed this band until now.

Listened to it this morning and can recall that it rocked but . . . that's it.

Reminds me of Captain Beefheart with these stompy eccentric ditties. Bounces around a number of styles in a short period, which feels like a perfunctory tour, but also creates a wacky kaleidoscope that I kind of dig. Definitely grew on me with each listen, and I always enjoy a good sleeper.

surprisingly solid

Rock with vocal harmonies and organ and some reggae rhythm. I Remember When Dreaming of You Wildfire

The first time an album caught me by surprise with a so g I know but didn't know it was from this artist. There are some good tunes on here, but nothing groundbreaking. There is a lot worse rock on this list so I'll give it a pass.

Kompakti, viihdyttävä, laulussa tunnetta ja hyvät soitot. Piti kuunnella useempi kerta

I can get behind the folksy, neo-psychedelia vibe this album delivers. The Coral mixes catchy melodies with a retro feel that somehow still sounds fresh. There’s a lot of variety here, from jangly guitars to swirling, trippy moments, and it all works together better than you’d expect. It’s fun, a little weird, and surprisingly easy to listen to from start to finish. If you like classic pop hooks with a touch of strangeness, this is definitely worth checking out.

What was commonplace forty-fifty years ago has become the rarest of musical acts; a band - as opposed to an individual and a computer holed up in a bedroom - with the ability to write melodic hooks actually exploring the sonic boundaries of 20th century rock/pop.

Not a bad album at all but it's a weak debut album. Favourite Songs: I Remember When, Dreaming of You, Waiting for the Heartaches. Least Favourite Songs: Simon Diamond, Goodbye.

This sounds as if The Doors were a 2000s garage rock revival band. Surprisingly, that works really well. I especially liked the layered oddball melodies. It did not make the jump from the UK to America, so it was all brand new to me. It’s interesting that this Oasis-adjacent Brit album would be released the Monday after Oasis announced a reunion tour. The algorithm has a hold of me!

This album was fun! Nothing genre breaking in early ‘00’s rock, but a fun album. 4/5!
